Riverdale Terrace expansion to begin this spring NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – Riverdale Terrace is planning on beginning their phase two expansion in May. The new development will add a structure west of the main building that could accommodate as many as 50 residents. The new structure will have a parking space with 18 new parking spots. The building will have three floors, with the second being a locked floor for those requiring assisted living. There will be two laundry facilities per floor with the second and third floors connected to the main building.

The new development will mean that Riverdale Terrace’s staff will be growing as well.

They will be adding 12 new staff members including nurses and Personal Support Workers (PSW)s who will support residents on the second floor 24/7.

“The market said we had a need here, we know there is a need here and we are doing it for the community,” said JC Godard who co-

owns Riverdale Terrace with his wife Suzi.

Riverdale Terrace was completed in 2012 with support from shareholders. As of Feb. 28, 2019 the Godards have bought all outstanding shares and are now 100 per cent owners.

“Let it be known that without Trenholm Healy and the past shareholders we would not be here today,” said Godard. The Godards bought the land that Riverdale Terrace sits on in

Aug. 2008.

The $8.8 million new development is expected to take eight months to complete.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB) is offering a new Home Support Worker (HSW) program. The HSW will aid Personal Support Workers (PSW) in helping people live at home or in the community safely and comfortably. The goal of the HSW is to be a support system and friend to their patients. Their work can involve meal prep, cleaning and companionship.

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – The Township of South Glengarry is encouraging residents of the region to discover and enjoy restaurants across the municipality as a part of the March Meal Ticket contest.

“It’s meant to get people out and about and seeing different (community opportunities),” said Shauna Baggs, Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator in South Glengarry.

With a minimum purchase of $15 at at least three of 10 participating restaurants, participants can enter into a draw to win a $300 gift card, which can be used towards any Meal Ticket restaurant of choice. Each location must stamp the individual’s meal ticket prior to entering the final draw, which will close on March 31.

Participating restaurants include Mama Sue’s Diner, Lancaster Restaurant and Pizzeria, Bourdeau Restaurant, The South Glengarry Restaurant, Ye Old Bridge Café, Jack’s Pub, The Grant Hotel, The Blue Anchor, Sheep’s Head Bistro and Papa’s Perfect Pizza.

“It really covers everything and there’s an assortment of different kinds of foods with a chance to win,” said Baggs.

Baggs said she has already received positive feedback. The contest was largely inspired by the gingerbread municipality map that appeared in the 2018 Holiday Tymes, in which shoppers were eligible to win a $500 shopping spree.

“Even if we don’t get a ton of ballots…just to get the idea of this, and that this is going on… is exciting,” said Baggs. “I’d really like to stress the community involvement and everyone working as a team…supporting each other and promoting each other and I think that’s going to go a long way in the future.”

A beer for Queens

CORNWALL, Ontario – The TriCounty Literacy Council (TCLC) is offering one-on-one tutoring for those interested in expanding their horizons on a wide range of topics.

“Students can have a variety of goals,” said Carol Anne Maloney, Literacy Instructor at TCLC. “Getting your GED of high school diploma for example.”

Alison Tucker is one of the volunteer tutors currently working with students through the TCLC program.

“A lot of it is confidence building,” Tucker explained. She is currently helping a woman who has immigrated to Canada on improving her English for her citizenship test.

Students interested in participating in the program are asked to call TCLC at 613-932-7161 to setup an interview.

After the interview, the students needs and goals will then be assessed.

“There is a commitment that is needed,” said Tucker. “They would need to commit to meeting four hours a week at a time that is convenient to both the student and volunteer.”

Tucker explained that the program is a great opportunity not just for students but for potential volunteers as well.

“I had the time, and now I’m using that time o do something I really enjoy,” she said. “I have a background in nursing and teaching and it can be very relaxing.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Rurban Brewing has come out with their third annual International Women’s Day brew.

The new beer was unveiled at Rurban on International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8.

For the past three years, Rurban has invited women to come help them brew a special beer to celebrate International Women’s Day. Each year, part of the proceeds go to a local non-profit organization. This year, Counselling and Support Services of SD&G was selected as the beneficiary organization.

This year’s beer was christened Queens of Hop and is described as having hop aromas and flavours of grapefruit rind, mango, ripe melon, and malt flavours of fresh bread, with a sustained, grapefruit rind bitterness that echoes with mango and bread crust.

“We have a lot of fun and it is always for a good cause,” said Cherie Lalonde of Rurban’s International Women’s Day Brew Crew.

Last year, the fundraiser collected $1,200 for the Agapè Centre.

Nasty potholes will be responsible this spring for tire damage, rim damage, steering and suspension damage, shocks, along with potential damage to struts, ball joints, rack and pinion steering to name just a few.

In a worst case scenario, the dreaded pothole can force you to have to call a tow truck.

Follow these tips for safer spring driving: If you hit a pothole and then immediately notice the car pulls to one side or the steering wheel is no longer straight, take your car to a reputable automotive service provider. This is because there is a very good chance that your car has been knocked out of alignment and may have damaged front end components.

The next time you stop the car, inspected the tire and rim for any damage. If there is a bulge or visible cord material on either sidewall of the tire, it must be replaced immediately. If the rim flange (edge of the rim) is damaged or bent, the best practice is to purchase a new rim.

If you hit a pothole and you get a flat, pull to the shoulder immediately, if possible. If a tire goes flat after hitting a pothole, it’s junk and will need

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) announced that they have selected Long Sault native Jesse Winchester as the 2019 CCHL Coach of the Year.

Winchester currently coaches the Brockville Braves, who have a 40-14-2-2 record so far this season.

Winchester played for the Cornwall Colts in the CCHL from 2001 to 2004, before going onto a career in the NHL where he played for the

Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators.

“Over the last two seasons, Jesse has continued to prove on a daily basis why he is such a special coach,” said Braves General Manager Dustin Traylen. “His intellect, demeanor, and professionalism has created a culture, work ethic, and aura surrounding the Braves organization. It is palpable for anyone who steps foot in our program. I am thrilled for Jesse and his staff, they are truly deserving of this award. It was a big year for our organization, and hopefully the best is yet to come.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Six local competitors tested their strength at the QuestPTS mini-strongman competition at the Quest Gym on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

“We’re always trying to give people something to train for,” said QuestPTS owner Thomas Irvine.

There was a $40 entrance fee and different prizes for participants.

“Everyone is going to walk away with something,” said Irvine.

The competition was split into two events. The first saw competitors pull 200 per cent of their body weight 70 feet, immediately after which athletes did a deadlift for maximal reps at the same weight.

In the first competition, Steve Robichaud completed 23 reps and Patrick Dumais completed 15.

In the second event, competitors had to complete a log clean and press at 90 per cent of their body weight.

“Mike MacIntyre smashed 3 easy reps and left gas in the tank,” said Irvine. “It ended in a three way tie with Mike winning the bonus event and won with 11 reps on the Log press bonus event.”

MacIntyre came in first, with Patrick Dumais finishing the competition in second place. Both won a Quest membership package and Massage with Suzanne Landriault.

In third place, Matt Brunet- Mitschke won a massage with Anick Proulx.

In fourth, Steve Robichaud won a package from Jessica Irvine and runners-up Nick Montour and Lalen Phillips each won a gift from Quest.

“This event would have not been possible without volunteers Bryan Landry and his son and Brent Gervais, and all the great spectators that cheered with great passion,” Irvine said.

During the municipal election, there were a few issues that got traction amongst candidates and the public at large. Moving to a ward system, developing Cornwall’s waterfront, taxes, all of these were popular topics during the election that in one way or another, still have momentum to some degree.

One topic that I wish was still being considered was having a public dog park in Cornwall. Off the top, I want to give a shout out to Fence Depot, which does operate a dog park at their shop on the North end of Pitt St. From what I see, this is a popular and well-run service. That being said, I believe that the City of Cornwall should be doing their part to support pet owners, and by extension local tourism, by building a public dog park somewhere on our beautiful waterfront.

There were a few candidates during the election who said that they were interested in the idea of a dog park in Cornwall, unfortunately, I don’t believe that anyone who advocated for a dog park is currently on council.

I think the Cornwall waterfront is the perfect location for a public dog park. With spring

on the way, now is the time to consider how this new feature might come to be.

Adding a prominent dog park on Cornwall’s waterfront I think will serve as a boon for tourism. I was traveling this summer with my girlfriend and our dog and we actively were looking for pet friendly restaurants, accommodations and activities and we definitely were not the only ones.

We celebrate our bike path as an important tourism feature that runs through the City of Cornwall and along our waterfront, imagine having a dog park just adjacent to the bike path where pet owners and bike riders could go with their furry friends.

Cornwall would not be the first to the dance in the region however by having a waterfront dog park. The Township of South Dundas has operated a dog park in Morrisburg free of charge since 2011.

In 2013 there was an effort by a group of citizens to build a dog park on the waterfront near the Eco Garden on Race St., but that idea required the approval of the Waterfront Committee, who unanimously rejected the idea. From what I understand, the committee of the day believed that if they set aside land

for dogs, it would be lost to everyone else.

I’m not talking about setting aside the entire waterfront for dog owners, just maybe a couple of hundred square metres. A dog park would be a public space, that would be open to dog owners and lovers, who are not a niche minority in this city. Additionally, this past August I received a letter to the editor asking residents to be more vigilant about keeping their dogs on leashes on the waterfront trail, well, if there is a dog park along the trail, I

think that would mean there would be far fewer dogs off leash in other places along that same trail.

Cornwall is going to have to use the waterfront land for something eventually, and I think that a dog park is something that the public can enjoy, while boosting our tourism at the same time.

Budget concerns Dear Editor, Glad budget discussion duration was nowhere close to 2018 debacle but I hope it was passed with enough debate to give proper attention to key issues. My concerns include the debt being built - another level of government with more debt - it has to stop

- at some point debt must be paid and out of control debt will cause devastating consequences.

My other issues are the “frivolous” expenditures on the waterfront signage and the arts centre. While not huge I believe they are a symbol of spending other people’s

money - not as much diligence or care is put into spending someone else’s money.

I believe the atrs centre appeals to a very small proportion of people living in Cornwall and like the signage will not drive tourism just stand as memories of wasted spending.

One of the greatest golfers to swing a club at Cornwall Golf and Country Club died last month at her New Mexico home. Rosemary Thompson was 76.

Daughter of Mary and Dr. J. A. Phillips, Rosemary, who took up golf at age seven, captured five Cornwall club championships while a student at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School. In 1957, at age 14, she was runner-up at the Quebec Junior Girls’ Championship and would go on to represent Quebec in three junior national championships. She was the Cornwall junior champion at age 13.

She took her talent to the University Of New Mexico, a golf hotbed, where she became one of the school’s top players.

She would go on to become one of the top amateur female golfers in the United States.

Her career peaked in 1992 when she became just the fourth Canadian-born golfer to win the United States Golf Association Senior Women’s title with a 54-hole record 220 score. The record still stands. It was her first year of eligibility. Other Canadians to win the national title are Marlene Stewart-Streit, Gayle Borthwick and Judith Kyrinis. In recognition of her major victory, Golf World Magazine named her Amateur Senior Women’s National Golfer of the Year.

A few weeks after her USGA title victory she won the New Mexico Senior Amateur championship, the only player to accomplish the double victory.

After graduating from university, she and husband Ralph, who predeceased her in 2009, moved to Texas where her game took off. She won the Amarillo City Championship

five times. In 1976 she won the Texas State Amateur title along with four other championships. She was named West Texas Athlete of the Year four times before moving back to New Mexico.

She would become a five-time New Mexico State amateur champion. She won the Albuquerque Women’s City championship 10 times, the Southwestern Golf Association Championship 11 times and claimed 14 consecutive New Mexico Senior Women’s Championships.

She holds 18 course records, registered a dozen holes-in-one and owns the course record at her home Four Hills club, a 63, set when she was 50. She finished her career with 37 club titles, 27 at Four Hills. Between 1972 and 1997, Thompson won 200 golf championships.

Thompson is a member of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame (1968), the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame.

Pointing out that Thompson was one of the most winning female golfers to come out of Canada, Flagstick.com writer Scott MacLeod said he was amazed that her career didn’t attract any national media attention in her native country.

“A real shame considering all she accomplished in her chosen sport,” lamented MacLeod.

“She was gracious in defeat, but that was not frequent,” Tom DeCoster, United States Golf Association member, told the Albuquerque Journal.

Rire » des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, ainsi que la gagnante de la 3e édition du Concours LOL, Gabrielle Poirier, se produiront à Cornwall avec quatre jeunes « Coups de cœur » de la demi-finale du Concours LOL-Mort de rire ! de notre région. Ces jeunes auront la chance de présenter leur numéro sur la même scène que les humoristes de métier.

Les jeunes de 7e et 8e années, en projet pilote cette année, et de la 9e à la 12e année peuvent participer en s’inscrivant sur le site du Concours LOL-Mort de rire ! Les douze finalistes gagnants de la demi-finale du concours reçoivent six heures d’accompagnement personnalisé auprès de formateurs-humoristes professionnels de l’École nationale de l’humour, afin de se préparer à la finale régionale (3 avril 2019 à Rockland) suivie de la finale provinciale qui aura lieu le 2 mai prochain Collège catholique Samuel-Genest, Ottawa.

Le jeudi 28 février dernier, les élèves de la maternelle à la 3e année de l’école Rose des Vents ont eu de la mystérieuse visite.

Le spectacle Mystéric et le secret brisé a su captiver l’auditoire très rapidement!

Ce magicien du nom d’Éric Leclerc a un talent très évident pour amuser la foule, pour la faire rire et réfléchir. Son spectacle permet au public de réfléchir sur l’intimidation et à l’utilisation des appareils multimédias par exemple. Les élèves rient mais retiennent d’importantes leçons.

Certains chanceux ont même pu partager la scène avec Mystéric pour quelques minutes. En effet, Brayden Norris (1ère année de Mme Michèle Racicot) et Olivia Baillie (classe de 2e-3e année de Mme Alysha Lavictoire) ont été, pour quelques instants, des

co-animateurs avec Mystéric.

Ce spectacle, de tours de magie et d’illusions, n’est pas comme les autres puisque Mystéric dévoile les secrets d’un tour de magie! C’est tellement fascinant de voir les élèves comprendre les dessous de l’illusion!

Les spectacles sont une excellente occasion d’ajouter à l’éducation de nos élèves. C’est toujours intéressant de voir briller les yeux des enfants et de les voir sourire!

CORNWALL, Ontario – Les jeunes « coups de cœur » de la région de l’Est ontarien de la cinquième édition de Concours LOL- Mort de rire ! se produiront le 22 mars prochain au théâtre Aultsville, dans le cadre de la Tournée « Juste pour rire » des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie.

Créée par l’Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry (ACFO-SDG) avec le soutien de la Fondation canadienne pour le dialogue des cultures, dans le cadre des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie (RVF), cette initiative s’adresse aux jeunes Franco- ontariens âgés de 14 à 18 ans qui souhaitent découvrir l’univers humoristique au travers de l’écriture et de l’interprétation sur scène d’un numéro comique (stand-up).

Selon le dire de Madame Poirier, présidente de l’ACFO-SDG, « Il s’agit de préserver notre identité et notre langue au goût du jour l’humour. » Le Concours LOL-Mort de rire ! en est à sa cinquième édition et est offert à tous les jeunes Franco-ontariens, qu’ils soient de l’Est ontarien, du Centre-Sud-Ouest et du Nord de l’Ontario.

Les températures prévues au-dessus du point de congélation feront fondre la neige, ce qui pourrait causer des inondations dans les zones basses et accroître le risque d’embâcle.

Action : Il est conseillé aux résidents de ne pas s’approcher des cours d’eau, car les prévisions météorologiques pourraient faire augmenter rapidement le débit des cours d’eau et les berges pourraient être instables et glissantes.

Les parents sont encouragés à expliquer ces dangers à leurs enfants.

Les résidents des zones sujettes aux inondations ou des basses terres, historiquement vulnérables aux inondations, devraient également prendre les précautions nécessaires pour protéger leurs biens, par example : • S’assurer que la pompe de puisard est dégagée, en bon état de fonctionnement et

qu’elle est munie d’un clapet anti-retour d’eau.

• Avoir accès à un générateur et à une pompe de secours portables.

• S’assurer que les descentes pluviales sont dégagées et que la sortie d’eau est située à au moins 3 m du logement.

• Enlever ou sécuriser les objets qui pourraient flotter à mesure que le débit augmente.

• Enlever des objets de valeur des soussols ou des étages inférieurs qui pourraient être inondés.

• Gardez les numéros de téléphone d’urgence à portée de la main.

• Familiarisez-vous avec le plan de préparation aux situations d’urgence de votre municipalité.

Le Loup, et de son tambour, Michel a su enchanter petits et grands avec ces airs entrainants “Ce fut un plaisir d’accueillir l’auteur-compositeur-interprète Michel Payment qui a su initier nos élèves à des chansons de répertoire folklorique et historique. Les élèves se sont bien amusés tout en démontrant une grande fierté pour leur langue et leur culture. Le point culminant a certainement été le spectacle en fin de journée où les élèves ont eu la chance de présenter leurs chansons à l’ensemble de l’école.

Here are some simple precautions you can take to prevent them: Don’t pour grease down the kitchen sink - this is the biggest cause of clogged drains.

When draining your sinks after washing dishes or anything with particals, always leave the drain catcher in the sink partly open to catch the dirt before it goes down the drain as you empty the sink.

Always flush your drain for several minutes by running hot water through them after every use.

Once per month, put two table spoons of baking soda in the drain opening and pour a cup of vinegar down the drain. This will help to keep your drains clear and smelling fresh. Flush with hot water after it sits for about 5 minutes.

NATIVITÉ RECITALS: YULIA DRAGINDA

The performance will be held on Sunday, March 17 at 2:30 pm at Nativité Co-Cathedral (220 Montreal Road) featuring the talented Yulia Draginda. Yulia, a graduate from the Moscow Tchaikowsky Conservatory, is an international concert, organist, pianist and chamber music partner. She is a doctoral student at McGill.

Admission is free with a suggested donation of $10.

LUNAFEST

LUNAFEST is a celebration of women’s diversity, women’s lives and stories around the world. LUNAFEST will showcase films by women, for women, about women. There will also be live performances, silent auction, candy bar, door prizes and a cash bar! Taking place March 30 at the Best Western, tickets are $40. Three members of the Cornwall Weightlifting Club have gone to take part in important meets recently. Maleeka Virtue and Brooke Lalonde joined team Ontario at the Canadian Junior Championship in Brossard, QC. Virtue took home silver in the women’s -49k division.

Lalonde placed fourth in the -59k division.

Meanwhile Thorin Gault was in St. Thomas, ON, competing in the Ontario Masters Open. Gault won the gold in the -96kg class for men over 45 and qualified for the World Masters Championships.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Ontario Power Generation (OPG) held the first event Women in Science Conference at the Nav Centre on Wednesday, March 6, 2019.

The conference was held in relation to International Women’s Day, which is on Friday, March 8.

Grade nine and ten students from Cornwall, Ottawa and the surrounding areas were invited to the Nav Centre in Cornwall to from women working in different fields of science including Environmental Science, Health Science, Engineering and Trades.

Canada’s Governor General Julie Payette recorded a welcoming message to the students gathered at the Nav Centre.

“Take today to learn about yourself,” she said.

“Not matter your goal, you can achieve it. We live in the right country for that.”

Mayor Bernadette Clement also addressed the gathered students and welcomed them to Cornwall. Clement explained to the young students that during her recent Mayoral election campaign, she was going door-to-door with a volunteer and the volunteer’s ten-year-old daughter.

The daughter had dark skin, and curly hair, just like Clement.

“She tugged my hair and said, “I’m going to run for mayor someday”and that’s why were here,”she

explained.

Clement told the girls in the audience that she hoped they would consider Cornwall for their future home and as a place to work.

“Your community stands behind you,” she said.

The keynote speaker for the opening ceremony was Gina Parvaneh Cody who was the first woman to receive a PhD in Engineering from Concordia University. Cody immigrated to Canada from Iran in 1979 and after completing her studies and going on to a career in engineering she went on to become Executive Chair and the principal shareholder at CCI Group Inc., a major Canadian engineering consulting firm.

Cody sold her business in 2016, and in 2018 made a significant donation to Concordia
