CORNWALL, Ontario – The sixth annual Bikes and Badges took place at St. Lawrence College on Saturday, June 1.

More than 100 kids came out to learn about bike safety, meet members of the Cornwall Police Service and have the chance to win a new bike or bike helmet.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis (CF) History reached a 15-year milestone last weekend on Sunday, May 26.

With sunshine and favourable temperatures, 87 participants walked along our scenic waterfront after registering at Lamoureux Park.

“This particular Walk has been held for 15 years now,” said Kim Baird, past Walk Chairperson. “We raised just shy of $6,000 this year.”

This year’s fundraiser was organized by Cystic Fibrosis Canada and Kin Canada. This year’s Chairperson, Sue Carron, was unavailable for a comment at the time of publication.

There were four bikes that were being given away at the event. Two were donated by Canadian Tire, one was donated by the Bikes and Badges committee, and another by the law firm Burns, Tucker and Lachine.

“It brings awareness to the disease,” said Baird about the Walk. “Our number one mandate is to raise money for research, or an affective control.”

Baird said that there are about 15 individuals under the age of 30-years-old from Cornwall and SDG who currently live with CF. She noted that CF is often physically unnoticeable, but it greatly impacts individuals’ lives. CF is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s digestive and respiratory systems.

“We just appreciate the community support, not just for the Walk but for all of our events… throughout the year. Together we will end CF,” said Baird. “We appreciate our supporting sponsors, Cornwall Kinsmen and Cornwall Kinettes.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Relics of Saint Padre Pio stopped at Cornwall’s Nativity Co-Cathedral on Monday, June 3.

Padre Pio lived from 1887 to 1968 in Italy.

Several miracles have been attributed to Saint Padre Pio including the healing of a blind Italian woman, and stigmata, which is the alleged supernatural suffering of wounds to the hands and feet in the same places where Jesus Christ was crucified.

Padre Pio’s relics included first and second degree relics. A first degree relic is any relic that comes from the body of a saint. First degree relics from Saint Pio that were a part of the tour in Cornwall included crusts from his wounds, blood and a lock of hair. Second degree relics

are those that touched his body, which include Padre Pio’s mantle and gloves.

Luciano Lamonarca, President and CEO of the Padre Pio Foundation said that Saint Pio is receiving a resurgence in recognition in recent years.

“Padre Pio is the saint of our time,” he said.

“He passed away in 1968 and it is so vivid his presence.”

Cornwall is just one of three places that Padre Pio’s relics have stopped in in Canada this year, and it will be the last.

Bishop Guy Desrochers of the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall said that it was an honour to have the relics stop here.

“It is a very special grace we are having here in Cornwall,” he said. “The people of this diocese show a great adoration to relics.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Since his teenage years, Jeff Lalonde has been involved in his community. Community involvement and volunteerism is something that runs in Lalonde’s family. Earlier this month, Lalonde found out that he had been nominated for the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, an award that recognizes those that support their community and is bestowed by Canada’s Governor General or by a proxy.

“At first when I saw my phone ring and saw it was the Government of Canada, I thought it was a scam, but then when I heard the message, I thought, “Wow,”” Lalonde said.

He started as a volunteer with the Agapè Centre, taking applications for their Christmas Basket program and helping out where he could.

As he got older, Lalonde found new causes to support.

He spent five years raising money for local Blazers soccer clubs to help send them to tournaments. In the last year, his fundraiser supported six teams, and raised $40,000

over five years.

After he moved on from that fundraiser, Lalonde and his wife Cherie started the Crafting a Cure Fundraiser in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). In Lalonde’s family, there are two children who live with Type-1 Diabetes.

In his five years running Crafting a Cure, the fundraiser brought in $100,000. A new team took over Crafting a Cure for it’s sixth year in 2018, and it brought in $25,000 in one night.

“It was nice to know we created something people wanted to carry on,” Lalonde said.

When asked why he decided to volunteer in his community for so many years, Lalonde says that it is the type of thing that once you start, you do not want to stop.

“I think when you help people, it is addictive,” he said. “When you volunteer you get to surround yourself with really good people.

In the end, it just feels good to help our your community and give back.”

Lalonde said that winning the Sovereign’s Medal is something he never expected.

“I was really shocked, it is an honoured just to be nominated for something at this level,” he said.

CORNWALL, Ontario – There were six hard fought bouts at the annual Boxing for Change event at the Civic Complex on Saturday, June 1, but the big winners were Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, Beyond 21 and the title charity, the Children’s Treatment Centre. Totals are still being counted, but each charity felt the love and support of the crowd that evening.

All of it would not have been possible without the amateur fighters who got in the ring and put on a show for the crowd.

In addition to the boxers in the ring, there

were some visiting stars from the world of boxing outside the ring that night. Storied boxers Larry Holmes, Gerry Cooney, Michael Spinks and Ray Mercer were the special guests at the boxing for change event.

The boxing legends went back into the locker rooms before the fight began to give the future boxers a pep-talk.

“If you believe in yourself, you can do it,” said Holmes. “The most important hing you want to work on is that jab. Everyone who was a good champion had a good jab.”

Cooney encouraged them all to start looking toward the future now.

“This is the start of the rest of your life. How

do you want to be remembered,” he said. “For seven years of your life, work your ass off. You’re the next generation of guys who are going to be something. Learn defense and protect your head.”

The two most anticipated matches on the card were the Guns and Hoses bout and the main event, Dave MacLean vs. David Murphy.

The Guns and Hoses match saw Cornwall Police Service officer Chris Sullivan take on Watertown, NY firefighter James Docteur.

Sullivan bloodied Docteur early in the first round. Referee Tony Luis stopped the match and awarded the win to Sullivan.

In the main event, Murphy and MacLean had

a hard fought bought, but in a unanimous judges decision, the match was awarded to MacLean.

In his post match speech, MacLean praised his opponent.

“Dave was a good sport through all of this and without him there would be half as many people here,” he said.

Murphy said he felt it was a close fight.

“I had the first round, he had the second and the third was a toss up, he earned this,” said Murphy.

I budgeted for 60 people and we are already over that.”

Cazaly explained that he tries to partner closely with the Agape Centre soup kitchen.

“We do breakfast, and they do lunch.

That’s two meals a day covered,” he said.

CORNWALL, Ontario – On Thursday, May 30 Centre 105, located at Trinity Anglican Church, held a fundraiser to help keep their kitchen stocked and their patrons stomachs full.

Centre 105 runs a breakfast program on weekdays and the Centre’s Director Peter Cazaly said that program is important not just for providing nutrition, but also because of the social connections it offers.

“There are people in Cornwall

struggling to make ends meet and we are trying to help them meet their food needs,” said Cazaly. “Also, it gives them a place to go in the morning. They can watch TV, read the newspaper and talk to other people.”

Cazaly states that the food budget for the Centre is $20,000 annually. On Thursday morning, he had already received $2,000 in mail in donations and an additional $1,000 donation from the Cornwall Optimists Club.

There were more than 60 people who turned out to Thursday morning’s fundraiser and Cazaly was thrilled.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall teen Donovan Pilon recently competed in the National Darts Federation of Canada 2019 Youth World Cup Qualifier in Saskatoon, SK, on the weekend of May 18, 2019.

Pilon had a great start to the tournament on Thursday, May 16 when he won the Junior Boys Bursary Shoot, bringing home the $1,000 prize money which will go towards his post secondary education.

The next day, he and his partner Zach Van Vilet won the Junior Boys Doubles event.

Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc Followers of Progressive Conservative social media in Ontario this weekend would have see quite a few photos of MPPs in corner stores. This was a directive from Premier Doug Ford who wanted to see his MPPs in corner stores to drum up awareness for his endeavor to make beer more available in Ontario.

Ford plans on ending the province’s contract with the Beer Store to allow beer to be sold by other vendors.

In principle, I don’t think that this is a bad idea. Beer is available in corner stores in Quebec, so why not here.

It will make getting beer more convenient. I do question whether there are more important things that the government could be focusing on.

Our local public school board is facing a steep deficit on the order of $11 million. Just this week, Bereaved Families, a counselling service for those who have lost loved ones, and received no provincial funding, had to close its doors in Cornwall. Sexual assault support centres, including the one in Cornwall have received reduced funding compared to what they were promised, but despite all this, presumably soon, we will be able to buy beer at our corner store.

Beyond the time and resources that the Ford government is using to campaign for this idea, there will also presumably be a cost to cancelling the Beer Store contract.

There is also the problem of messaging. When the government runs a big social media campaign like this and get’s all of their MPPs involved, you think it would be about something revolutionary that will change and improve the lives of countless voters, not buck-a-beer

and beer in the corner store. I mean, it’s nice, but it isn’t an essential.

The Ford Government states that it is committed to reducing the provincial deficit and growing the budget, then why are they wasting time and money on this? The simple reason I think is the old Roman theory of Bread & Circuses. Keep the populace entertained and distracted and they won’t notice when the rug is taken out from underneath them.

Those who voted for Ford elected him to cut spending, and if you look at our schools, health units, municipalities, social and support programs, then that is definitely what he is doing. How he should be approaching these cuts, is instead of investing his and his party’s time in pushing for beer in corner stores, he should be reaching out to voters and doing heavy consultations to

make these cuts where they are needed and to cushion those who, as I’ve said, suddenly find the rug out from underneath them.

The strongest benefit I can see to the government’s plan is that it will help grow Ontario’s craft beer industry and I will give them credit for that. All across Ontario, there are great craft brewers, including in Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G. You can’t find many of these delicious treasures in the Beer Store or LCBO and allowing corner stores to sell beer will presumably open the door for them.

Leaving Lumley speechless EDITORIAL@cornwallseawaynews.com

It takes a lot to leave Ed Lumley speechless.

But the University of Windsor board of governors pulled it off last week during the university’s convocation.

It was the Windsor native’s final day as his alma mater’s chancellor, a post he held for 13 years. In that time, Lumley conferred 55,000 degrees, which makes up 40% of the university’s 136,000 graduates.

The university said farewell by naming him Chancellor Emeritus, presenting him with an honourary Doctor of Laws degree (it is now Hon. Dr. Edward Chester Lumley) and wrapping it up with a nice bow: a large portrait that will hang in the university.

And what did the former Cornwall mayor and Stormont-Dundas member of Parliament/cabinet minister have to say about it all.

“I’m speechless,” he said.

Well, not quite. He quickly recovered.

“My business career had wrapped up, my political career had finished, and to end your career as chancellor of your alma mater in your hometown is an incredible honour,” he told the Windsor Star newspaper. “And for them to name me Chancellor Emeritus ... I mean, it’s too much for words.”

In 2013 the university named its new $112 million centre for engineering innovation the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation as a thank-you gift to Lumley for helping to raise millions of dollars.

Lumley graduated from the university in

1961 (Bachelor of Commerce) when it was called Assumption University. ************* Cory Moore wrapped up a 41-year career as a Cornwall firefighter when he put in his last shift on June 5, 1958.

When Moore became a member of the town volunteer fire brigade in 1917 it was using horse-drawn fire wagons. He became its deputy chief in 1920 serving under Chief George Hunter. When the brigade was made a permanent force in 1945 he was named the first chief of the 28-man department.

Moore was one of the fire fighters involved in fighting the city’s largest fire on Aug. 7, 1933 which destroyed 31 businesses on the west side of Pitt Street, 10 businesses and five dwellings, including the Victoria Arena, on Third Street West. An apartment block on the east side was lost.

The city announced that Lucien (Lou) Carriere, a member of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, had been hired to replace Moore. Carriere served as chief until 1981 when Hugh O’Reilly became the third chief of the permanent force.

McCosham of Cornwall was ordained to the priesthood. He was a graduate of CCVS. ... Two new ultra modern four-unit apartment buildings constructed by Menard Brothers at 606 and 636 St. Felix Street were for sale. ... Mike’s ESSO Service Station at Brookdale Avenue and Eleventh Street held its official opening. It was operated by Mike Lapensee. ... Miller-Hughes Ford had the new Edsel sedan listed for $3,295. ... For the first time in 13 years there were no criminal cases to be heard in the June general session at United County court. ... The province announced that it had purchased property in Long Sault for a new Ontario Provincial Police District 11 headquarters, replacing rented spaced on Augustus Street in Cornwall where the OPP had been housed since 1948. The province also planned to build eight bungalows near the headquarters for senior personnel. ... Seven Cornwall Classical College students received their Bachelor of Arts degrees. They were Rejean Lebrun, Rene Poirier, Jean Guy Gauthier,. Jacques Gibeault, Aurele Lauzon, Bernard Lajambe and Jean Lefebvre. Three of the grads planned to study for the priesthood. ... Kenny Lauzon scattered seven hits as Paragon Motel blanked Miller-Hughes in a City Junior Baseball League game at the Athletic Grounds. Keith Bowen led Paragon with three singles. Connie Payment and Pete Champagne each had two singles.

TRIVIA In the 1950s and early Sixties this Cornwall restaurant offered a dining room and indoor pool.

Meet the folks who have taken up the challenge to raise a million dollars toward the repurposing of the downtown BMO into the future arts and culture centre at 159 Pitt Street. One or more of them may be calling you soon inviting you to contribute to the growing fund.

The team has various levels of organization.

The nerve centre is the steering committee chaired by Katie Burke, who is ably assisted by John McMartin, Rose Desnoyers, Brian Lynch and Elaine MacDonald. Working together, the steering committee gathered in some fifty individuals who are in turn organized into mini-teams headed by captains who are pictured here. The captains and their chairs

have responsibility for different sectors of the community. For example, Katie Burke has responsibility for the Service Clubs.

To date, the fundraisers have been conducting a direct ask campaign but as summer draws close, they are branching out into an events phase. The first of the planned events is an auction of high quality donated art, which will happen on June 7 on the premises at 159 Pitt. The auction is public and is sure to be entertaining as well as culturally significant. The goods to be auctioned were on view during the May 24 Art Walk and by appointment prior to June 7.

On the day itself, from 3 pm till 6:30, certain decorative and utilitarian items will be sold

in an on-premise yard sale. Entertainment during the yard sale will be provided by Moise Lasata and Francisco Rugama, the duo who performed close by During the Art Walk.

Other events are approaching quickly: Your Arts Council production of Conquer the Canvas, a first-time participatory extravaganza will take over rink 1 at the Benson Centre on June 15, starting at 6 pm.

Tickets for Conquer the Canvas are available online and are a bargain for $20. L’Amalgame is next up, with Les Papillons de Nuit, at l’Heritage High School, June 7, 8, 14, 15 at 7:00 pm and June 16 at 2:00 pm.

La CNS accueille des étudiants pour planter 3 000 arbres et arbustes le long des cours d’eau Communiqué de presse de la CNS

DUNDAS NORD, Ontario - Grâce au soutien du Programme de financement communautaire ÉcoAction, la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) a planté plus de 3 000 arbres et arbustes indigènes le long des cours d’eau en partenariat avec des propriétaires fonciers, des écoles secondaires et des Premières nations à travers le territoire de 4 384 km2 de l’Office de protection de la nature dans l’Est de l’Ontario.

Durant ces travaux, la CNS a surveillé les cours d’eau de la région et a identifié quatre fermes à Casselman, North Dundas, La Nation et la ville d’Ottawa qui pourraient bénéficier de la plantation d’arbres le long de cours d’eau.

L’Office de protection de la nature a collaboré avec les propriétaires fonciers et cinq écoles secondaires locales pour organiser des activités de démonstration de plantation à l’intention de plus de 100 élèves qui ont obtenu leur certification de Majeure Haute Spécialisation pour leur diplôme d’études secondaires.

Des représentants de Plenty Canada ont assisté à chaque plantation pour partager les connaissances traditionnelles des Premières nations sur l’écologie forestière, permettant ainsi aux gens de tisser des liens avec la nature.

Pour Chris Craig, technicien forestier principal de la CNS, il s’agit de protéger et de restaurer l’environnement local pour les générations futures. « Ces nouvelles zones tampons riveraines augmenteront le couvert forestier local et protégeront la qualité de l’eau pour les années à venir », explique M. Craig. « C’est encourageant de voir tant de gens se rassembler pour améliorer l’environnement. » Les zones tampons riveraines sont des zones boisées et végétalisées près des cours d’eau qui servent de filtres organiques capables d’absorber les polluants provenant des utilisations des terres adjacentes; elles réduisent également les inondations et l’érosion.

En 2018, la CNS a publié son Rapport sur la conservation des forêts qui comprenait des recommandations sur la protection et l’augmentation du couvert forestier local après deux ans d’examen et de consultations avec

des groupes de travail formés d’intervenants locaux.

Dans ce rapport, la CNS a déterminé que la plantation d’arbres le long des cours d’eau est essentielle pour le maintien et l’augmentation du couvert forestier local, ainsi que pour le maintien d’un environnement local en santé; l’Office de protection de la nature offre des subventions aux propriétaires fonciers intéressés à planter des zones tampons riveraines. « Nous sommes reconnaissants de l’appui reçu du gouvernement fédéral, des propriétaires fonciers et des écoles partenaires pour réaliser ce projet », ajoute M. Craig. « Nous avons hâte de planter encore plus d’arbres sur tout le territoire cet été. » Ce projet a été entrepris avec l’appui financier du gouvernement du Canada, par l’entremise du ministère fédéral de l’Environnement et du Changement climatique.

«C’est une grâce très spéciale que nous avons ici à Cornwall», a-t-il déclaré. “Les habitants de ce diocèse manifestent une grande adoration pour les reliques.”

CORNWALL (Ontario) - Les reliques de SaintPadre Pio se sont rendues à la Co-cathédrale de la Nativité à Cornwall le lundi 3 juin.

Padre Pio a vécu de 1887 à 1968 en Italie.

Saint Padre Pio a attribué plusieurs miracles, notamment la guérison d’une Italienne aveugle et des stigmates.

Les reliques de Padre Pio comprenaient des reliques du premier et du deuxième degré. Une

relique au premier degré est une relique provenant du corps d’un saint. Les vestiges de Saint-Pio au premier degré faisant partie de la tournée à Cornwall comprenaient des croûtes de ses blessures, du sang et une mèche de cheveux. Les reliques du deuxième degré sont celles qui ont touché son corps, notamment le manteau et les gants de Padre Pio. Luciano Lamonarca, président et chef de la direction de la Fondation Padre Pio, a déclaré que Saint Pio avait reçu un regain de reconnaissance ces dernières années.

Annonce d’une séance d’information publique no4 Nouveau centre d’inspection des véhicules commerciaux – Autoroute 401 ouest Étude d’évaluation environnementale de portée générale et de conception préliminaire (GWP 4045-10-01) LE PROJET En 2012, le ministère des Transports a retenu les services de Dillon Consulting Limited pour effectuer une étude d’évaluation environnementale de portée générale et de conception préliminaire afin de repérer un emplacement adéquat pour la construction d’un nouveau Centre d’inspection des véhicules commerciaux (CIVC) qui remplacera l’actuel Centre d’inspection des camions (CIC) de Lancaster, situé sur les voies ouest de l’autoroute 401, à l’est de l’échangeur de la route de comté 34, dans le comté de Glengarry Sud, Comtés unis de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry.

Une composante clé de l’étude consistait à repérer un site pour la construction du nouveau CIVC le long du corridor ouest de l’autoroute 401. Des séances d’information publiques (SIP) ont eu lieu en juin 2012 (SIP no 1), en avril 2013 (SIP no 2) et en novembre 2017 (SIP no 3) afin de fournir des renseignements sur l’étude et de recueillir des commentaires sur les sites de rechange proposés pour le nouveau CIVC, sur le processus d’évaluation et sur la solution de rechange recommandée.

La SIP no 3 a présenté le lieu recommandé pour le nouveau CIVC qui est situé à l’ouest de l’autoroute 401/échangeur de la route de comté 34, dans le comté de Glengarry Sud. À la suite des commentaires obtenus, l’empreinte du CIVC recommandé a été déplacé à l’est du lieu prévu.

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario –Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is thrilled to announce the arrival of a new digital general radiography (x-ray) machine. The purchase is the result of another successful fundraising effort by the hospital’s Foundation. This state-of-the-art equipment will provide many new benefits including higherquality images.

Housing the new machine required a complete renovation of the x-ray room, a project that started in January and was completed in May, a month ahead of schedule. The renovation saw the room enlarged and includes upgraded lead lining to

meet current regulations, plus added elements like HVAC, an updated electrical component, and dimmable lights.

HGMH Senior Medical Radiation Technologist Jessica Duperron is training staff on the new equipment and says she’s excited about the equipment, a Ysio Max from Siemens, and says she’s excited about the new Diagnostic Imaging suite. Besides higher-quality images, the addition of two portable detectors allows for reduced radiation doses and for images to be taken digitally even when a patient is confined to a wheelchair or on a stretcher. Reporting to the Supervisor, Logistics, the successful candidate will be required to assist with the general building maintenance at the main Cornwall Operations Centre and Cornwall District Heating (“CDH”) plant, requiring a minimum 4th Class Operating Ticket.

Responsible for buildings and equipment at the Operations Centre and CDH facility to ensure safe operations by conducting regular preventative maintenance and inspections.

Address areas that require attention and work with any outside general contractors to schedule and to make certain work orders are completed. Adhere to all Company policies and procedures and comply with all relevant legislation and standards.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The annual Walk to End ALS took place on Saturday, June 1 at St. Lawrence College.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease is a degenerative diseases that impairs the use of muscles. There is currently no cure and the disease is fatal. There are one-totwo Canadians diagnosed with ALS every day.

The walk hoped to raise $35,000 to help fight ALS. Of the money raised, 60 per cent would be used to fund equipment and support services for patients living with ALS and the rest would be used for research to end ALS.

The walk was previously known as the Walk for ALS, but Master of Ceremonies Thom Racine stated that this year’s event had gone through a re-branding.

“We are not walking for ALS, we are walking to end ALS,” he said.

The 5km walk began at St. Lawrence College and followed the Cornwall bike path towards the Nav Centre.

The event had a silent auction, 50/50 draw and BBQ. Sponsors of the event was the Law firm of Christopher Griggs, St. Lawrence College, Cardinal Meats, Roy’s Flowers, No Frills, Tim Hortons and Farm Boy. Seaway News was a media sponsor of the walk.

Sorry to see Bereaved Families close. They are an organization that received no government funding, had one part-time employee and many volunteers, but last year, they helped over 1,000 local residents deal with some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
