Fatality on Ninth and Sydney CPS said that they had notified the next of kin, but that no further details would be released at this time.

CPS said that the investigation is ongoing as of 10:30 a.m. and that they expected the street to be closed for several hours.

The CPS is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to please contact Detective Constable Darrell Blakely by calling 613-9335000 ext. 2754 or ext. 2404 to leave anonymous information.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall Police Service (CPS) confirmed that a fatal accident occurred on Ninth St. just east of Sydney St. at around 7:15 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19.

The accident involved a motorcycle and a car.

“The driver of the motorcycle succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the car did not sustain injuries at the time of the collision,” reads a statement from CPS.

ST. REGIS (Kana:takon) – The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) is currently investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 11 in the district of Kana:takon (St. Regis).

The investigation ensued in the early morning when police and paramedic’s responded to a residence where a male victim was found with an unknown injury. The victim was identified as Jeffrey Allen Lazore-Arquette, 58, of Akwesasne.

Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance transported the victim to CCH, at which point he was airlifted to Ottawa. The victim later succumbed to his injuries at the Ottawa Hospital.

On the evening of Friday, Aug. 16, AMPS announced that an arrest had been made in relation to the homicide investigation of the death of Jeffert Allen Lazore-Arquette.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The United Way of SD&G is gearing up for its 2019 campaign season and has already announced it’s chair for this year, David Booyink.

Booyink has served on the United Way’s campaign committee in the past and is eager to help lead the charge this year.

“I was so honoured to be asked to be this year’s Campaign Chair. My goal is to increase knowledge of the funded agencies and influence one another to come together in the most impactful way. Only together can we continue to give hope to those in need. Only together, we

can make the most impact within our community,” said Booyink.

The campaign this year will be following to credos #Unignorable and #ShowYourLocalLove.

Showing your local love reflects the support that the United Way and United Way supported organizations relay on in the forms of not just monetary donations, but in volunteer hours as well.

Upcoming events in support of the United Way’s fall campaign include the 100 Reasons to Run fundraiser that was started by Steve Melios.

Melios plans on running 100 km through Cornwall and SD&G to raise money for youth programs supported by the United Way.

On Sept. 21 will be the Beeau’s Bike Ride.

Bikers will be leaving from the Cotton Mills in Cornwall and biking to Vankleek Hill, raising money for the United Way through their journey.

The United Way will be holding their annual Campaign Kickoff Breakfast at the Cornwall Legion on Thursday, Sept. 12.

“This will be my first breakfast of many,” said Juliette Labossière- Executive Director. “This year’s campaign is going to be about investing in networking with agencies where needs are the greatest, the development of community partnerships and the fostering of donor relationships.”

Raheem Aman hoping SDSG will go Green CORNWALL, Ontario – Raheem Aman believes that Canada needs to reinvest in its unique, diplomatic identity, and is hoping that Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry voters will agree with his platform points.

Aman hopes to place focus on working closer with the science community, working on environmental sustainability, governmental peace keeping and continued transparency throughout his campaign. His Party’s main beliefs, including non violence, social justice, respect for diversity, ecological wisdom, sustainability and participatory democracy resonate deeply with Aman. He sees our region as a beautiful and safe location to live, with a lot of room for growth.

At the age of 26, this will be the second federal election Aman has campaigned in for the Green Party, the first being in the Hamilton Mountain district in Hamilton, Ontario. The Green Party, among all other parties, is the one in which Aman’s beliefs and moral compass best align with right now. Aman also prides himself on being politically engaged with local council meetings, striving to review the agenda if he can not attend.

“Many people don’t know what the green party is all about,” said Aman, who referenced stereotypes that elude to the Party focusing solely on the environment or being associated with marijuana because of the colour.

Aman recently moved to Cornwall after living around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for the earlier years of his life. After growing up in

Mississauga, Aman’s family moved to Brampton when he was 13 and later moved to Hamilton to be closer to his grandmother who was living with health challenges. Aman graduated from McMaster University where he studied Justice, Political Philosophy and Law. With a low federal voter turnout, under 50 per cent, especially among young adults, Aman feels that he will face challenges and advantages as a youthful candidate. CORNWALL, Ontario – On Aug. 2, 2019, Cornwall lost one of the leading artists who helped grow its theatre scene into what it has become today. Lionel Tessier passed away at the Cornwall Community Hospital, he was 92.

Tessier spent many years working in theatre in Cornwall before there even really was an established theatre scene. In 2015, he was inducted into Cornwall’s Arts Hall of Fame.

“Lionel enjoys the well-deserved reputation as a theatre visionary, mentor, director and actor,” reads Tessier’s biography in the Cornwall Arts Hall of Fame. “He was a champion for the preservation of the Capitol Theatre. He led the

“Save the Capitol Theatre” committee which kept the lights on and the seats filled, 1978 -1986.”

Tessier was chair of the Eastern Ontario Drama League and of Glen Productions, he also sat on the board of the Upper Canada Playhouse.

On three occasions, Tessier adjudicated the Sears Drama Festival.

Tessier’s longtime friend and fellow Cornwall Art Hall of Fame inductee Edith Stiles remembered him as a good man with a passion for plays.

“He was such a nice guy, you could have a lot of fun with him,” she said.

“It is not very often that someone can act in a play and direct a play and run a play like My

Fair Lady,” said Stiles. “He made a big impact on the theatre and the arts both on and off the stage.”

Stiles, who met Tessier after she came to Cornwall at the end of the Second World War, said that at that time, there were very few plays being produced in Cornwall.

“Before the Cornwall Little Theatre and the Glen, he directed plays annually for St. Columbans Church,” she said. “We all had to put our shoulders to the wheel years and years ago because there was nothing then but the yearly play the Catholic Church put on.”

LONG SAULT, Ontario – South Stormont Council discussed a range of topics on Wednesday, Aug. 14, including the following:

OPP Staff Sgt. Kahn presented a report to Council regarding updated statistics in incidents in the municipality.

Throughout the month of July, sexual assault chargers decreased from six to four from 2018.

Twenty-six assault charges were laid, break and enter incidents rose to 10 from six and thefts increased from 27 in 2018 to 40. Additionally, thefts from motor vehicles increased by 66 per cent, but after a suspect was charged, all thefts from motor vehicles ceased.

Sgt. Kahn said that staff will be discussing a traffic petition presented by residents of Rosedale Terrace and contemplating the implementation of

a speed tracking sign in the neighbourhood in the future after a full analytical report. He indicated that officers had begun patrolling the area more frequently, not observing any speeders, but understands that random patrols do not give a comprehensive view.

It was also noted that SDG OPP had begun working with Montreal police, the CBSA and Hawkesbury OPP investigating a high-end theft ring that involved thieves attempting to transport stolen vehicles to the U.S. Sgt. Some Councillors eluded to the importance of reviewing dog licensing and animal control/zoning By-laws following the devastating fire at Knot Furgotten rescue in Ingleside, which saw the demise of many rescued cats.

Coun. MacIsaac said that the Township should explore its options with licensing of cats as well, similar to Cornwall City’s council, as soon as possible.

“I don’t think this is something we should be sitting on for a long time,” said Coun. MacIsaac, expressing hopes to see a report next month. She also expressed looking at limits per household.

“This is going to be a difficult Policy to bring forward,” said Deputy Mayor Smith.

Mayor McGillis was in agreement that the Township was in a unique position, with some agricultural properties within the municipality. He expressed his hopes to protect residential areas to ensure a situation similar to the fire in Ingleside will not happen again.

It was noted that the province may unveil legislation on the topic in 2020. The By-laws will continue to be reviewed.

Council votes to increase pay

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall City Council voted in favour of a pay increase for councillors.

Council passed the motion that would give them a pay increase of $1,700 this year and $1,300 in 2020. These increases, along with the annual cost of living adjustment of two per cent that councillors receive annually will bring their salary to $22,000 by 2022, the end of term for the current council.

The first number of $1,700 makes up for the cancellation of the federal tax exemption program for municipal elected officials that was ended in 2018.

A report from City administration shows that a Cornwall City Council have the tenth lowest pay as compared to 12 other municipalities.

On the other hand, Cornwall has the fourth largest municipality out of those comparator cities and the second largest budget.

CORNWALL, Ontario – At their meeting on Monday, Aug. 12, Council received a report from City of Cornwall administration that recommended that all cats be spayed or neutered (de-sexed) and that all owned cats be kept indoors.

The recommendations made to Council in the report will form the basis of a by-law that will be presented to Council later in the year.

The main recommendations focus around ensuring that all owned cats are de-sexed within five years and that feral, or community cats are trapped, de-sexed and released.

“What’s key is having the cats de-sexed,” said Chris Rogers, the City’s top by-law official.

“Whether it is feral cats or community cats or household cats because that is the ultimate population control measure.”

Colin MacKeen Just keep your cats inside, this whole idea that keeping cats inside is torture for them is ridiculous, my cats all stay inside and they love it and not one trys to go outside. It really isnt hard to keep your cats inside and if your cat is in heat and wants out and you dont want to be annoyed by its whining, get it fixed.

If owners would keep their outdoor cats in their own yards, I am all for cats being outdoors. What I am sick of..is neighbour›s cats, roaming my backyard and screaming and trying to fight my indoor cats thru the screen. I also don›t appreciate them using my garden as a litterbox.

Jessica Pugh Our cats are 100% indoors.The only time they are outdoors is when they›re in a carrier on their way to the vet. A few of ours have been strays outside, but have adapted well to being kept indoors. There are too many dangers for them out there.

Louise Mignault I completely agree with neutering a cat.

But I know cats and many are just not happy indoors. You can put a dog on a leash and take him for a walk (and most are taken for walks 2-3 times daily) but it is extremely difficult to do that with a cat. They are not the same animal and trying to equate how to treat a cat with how you treat a dog is going to make the cat suffer.

Wastewater Treatment Plant pipe floats into St. Lawrence River

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – During a South Stormont Township meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 14, Public Works Manager Ross Gellately informed Council and members of the public that a pipe from the Ingleside Wastewater Treatment Plant had surfaced and floated into the St. Lawrence River.

The pipe, that is approx. 750 mm in diameter and 1.5 km in length, was noticed on Friday, Aug. 9 in the area of McLaren

Tammy Crawford I’m just saying, but nowhere in the article does it say that the pipe is releasing anything into the river. waste water going in or waste water going out, it’s just a floating pipe. Just that a pipe that was buried underground in the 90s became dislodged and floated to the surface…

With frost freeze and thaw each year, these things happen.

Campground. Staff attended the pipe and placed pylons on it to signify its existence to water traffic.

Still under investigation, the cause of the pipe’s surfacing and the extent of the situation is still unknown at this point. Gellately contended that the phenomena has occurred before in a municipality that borders Lake Ontario.

But again, it’s just the pipe floating, nothing is being put into the river. So no one has to worry that this pipe is it feeding dirty water urine and shit into the river LOL. Well, not from THIS pipe anyway lol Bradley Markell If it isn’t the low waters its pipes. I think it is stupid they lower the water level as much as they have every year.

Did you know that your Cornwall City Councilllor makes less money than their South Glengarry counterparts? I didn’t until last Monday.

Cornwall Council passed a raise for themselves at that Monday meeting. Currently they make a little over $16,000. This new raise will bring them up to $22,000 by 2022, which is the current provincial average.

There are three reasons why this raise is a good thing.

The first being that it will allow more people to run and serve as councillors. In administration’s report to Council about their own compensation, administration stated specifically that the low pay of councilors might deter those who are less well off or are employed from seeking to run for the position. This I think is true, it is easier for those who are retired to run for and to sit on council because they have the time and income to do it.

In eighteenth and nineteenth century England and in the United States, those who were elected to government were wealthy landowners because they had the time and money to do so, and because of that, it was their views that were primarily represented.

By making it easier for more people to run and sit on council we, the voters will benefit from having a diversity of perspectives representing us, rather than just a narrow perspective from one segment of the population.

The second reason is quality of candidates.

Now, I am not knocking anyone who is currently sitting on council, nor anyone who ran for council in the election last October. I heard a lot of great ideas during the election and it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there.

However, maybe there were some great candidates out there who did not run because they felt that they would not be appropriately com-

pensated for their time.

To me, it reminds me of an emerging artist who is asked to work for exposure. Sure, they are artists because they love the work, but love doesn’t put food on the table and plenty people can die of exposure. Also, the work of an artist, like the work of a councillor, has value.

That brings me to my third point, value. A councillor’s work is valuable, they make important decisions that affect the future of everyone in the City. They also spend more than just a few hours every couple of weeks at Council meetings. According to a report in 2018 done

by City administration, the average councillor spends 275 hours a year working on City business. Whether that be sitting in Council meetings, attending events, committee meetings or other duties.

City council are our employees, we should incentivize them based on what we think their job is worth when done properly. If voters think that a councillor is not earning their pay, then vote them out.

Councillors are in a difficult position, because they are responsible for giving themselves raises, no one else can increase their pay, which makes it a difficult decision politically, but in this case, it had to be done.

If anything, I think that Councillor Todd Bennett, who voted against the motion, had a point that if anything, council should have been voting on a pay increase for the next council and not themselves.

Eight members of council voted in favour of the pay increase, with Todd Bennet, Maurice Dupelle and Justin Towndale (by abstaining) voting against. The reasoning behind their opposition to the increase will be explained in future stories in Cornwall Seaway News.

Think back to tourist destinations you’ve visited. Your list might include places such as the following: Paris, New York City, St. Louis, Toronto, London, Wawa, Sudbury, Pisa, Rome and Washington.

Next step: List the landmark associated with each of those places. I’m sure you’ll come up with the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, The Arch, CN Tower, Big Ben’s Clock Tower, The Canada Goose, The Big Nickel, The Leaning Tower, The Colosseum and The Lincoln Memorial.

That was too easy! And now, a real challenge. Think Ingleside. What striking landmark comes to mind for Ingleside? Think really hard.

Then, go through all your travel photos and post cards, then close your eyes, search your memory and ask your neighbours and friends.

What landmark does Ingleside have?

I’m sure you came up with absolutely nothing. The following is my proposal for a project that will put Ingleside, my town, in the book of the cities with the top one hundred most memorable landmarks.

Picture this: we create a 730 feet long steel outline of a bulk carrier. The west to east distance between Ingleside’s Bank Street and Dickinson Drive is also about 730 feet. That just happens to be the maximum length of the ships that ply the waters of the nearby St. Lawrence Seaway. That’s also the length of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975.

That massive outline would be the backdrop for a 250-foot long silhouette of a typical canaller, the type of boat that was the maximum size that could be accommodated by the

pre-1957 Seaway locks.

Finally, in front of both of them would be an approximately 30-foot long representation of the Voyageur canoes which were used before any of the canals were constructed.

There are some generous green spaces south of Ingleside’s shopping plaza. That would be the location of this proposed landmark cluster, plus a few other appropriate

items, such as a local map, signage indicating the existence of local shopping facilities, library and a public washroom.

Financing of this project? There’s a limit to the number of words I’m allowed to submit each week. In the meantime, how about sending me some of your ideas on how this project could become a reality.

Forced pay increase money to a charitable cause - such as the Agape Centre, the new arts centre or the Children’s Treatment Centre - in their name.

I’m sure the recipients would be grateful.

The councillors would be rewarded with annual charitable tax receipts and be comforted in knowing that while they believe the annual increase “forced” upon them by their colleagues is wrong, they did not reap the

benefits personally.

It would be a wonderful gesture. And, if they return to council in three years they can lead a campaign to have the increases rolled back to the 2018 level.

However, while they oppose the increases in this term, they will be “forced” to receive the annual adjustments that they do not want.

No doubt this moral dilemma will weigh on their conscience when they start to reap the financial benefits of the increases. It is the

After finishing his education, Regnier now teaches a course pertaining to skate park management and development and still hops on his board from time to time, depending on how he is feeling.

“Thankfully these guys are motivated so they keep me going out and skateboarding with them,” said Regnier about his students.

After attending physiotherapy to nurse a knee injury, King is back on her board and practices intensively about two or three nights a week, apart from skateboarding to school every day when it is in session.

“She was 11 going on 12 and kind of bummed that she wasn’t on any sports teams, but she wanted to try skateboarding because my niece skateboarded all the time. So I just told her get on the board…” said Daigle, remembering how her daughter’s love for the sport blossomed.

“I need to work on speed and bending my knees,” said King, after recently practicing on a large hill.

Regnier, who has competed on the North Carolina five times in the past, has been setting up similar runs for King to work on. Each race is timed, whether dual or open, and qualifying rounds determine who proceeds throughout

“I’m happy I got into Slalom,” said King, who especially takes pride as a female competitor. “If it was more (regularly) hosted (locally), people wouldn’t ask questions about what it is and how it works.”

King hopes that the sport will grow in popularity and understanding.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Chloe King, 13, hopes to whiz by her competition this year at the World Slalom Skateboarding Championship, held in North Carolina from Oct. 18 to 20.

The young hopeful is coordinating with her mother Patty Daigle to raise funds to support her trip through a social media auction that is set to end on Aug. 17. A public BBQ fundraiser, which will be held during the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 18 at 17385 County Rd. 18, is also set to support her journey. Daigle estimates that the family needs to raise about $2,000 to offset travel, accommodation and racing costs.

“Our goal right now is just to raise enough money to get Chloe to North Carolina because that’s what she wants to do,” said Daigle.

King placed second in her Junior age category in each event (Giant, Hybrid and Tight Slalom) during the 2017 World Championship, which was held here in Cornwall, and saw competitors from across the globe.

“There was a bunch of hype and it was exciting to be around everyone who was really into it,” said Daigle, who met athletes from as far as Germany.

Since then, King has been working with coach Claude Regnier to continue improving her skills.

Les camps de pêche pour jeunes de la CNS éduquent plusieurs douzaines de jeunes Communiqué de presse de la CNS NATION SUD, Ontario - Les 11e camps de pêche annuels pour jeunes de la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) ont été officiellement encroulés pour la saison 2019. Un total, 65 enfants âgés de 8 à 13 ans ont été accueillis dans cinq camps, qui ont eu lieu dans les aires de conservation du pont Cass à Winchester, High Falls à Casselman et Jessup’s Falls à Plantagenet. « Ces camps offrent aux jeunes une expérience inestimable d’apprentissage en plein air, » explique Holly Nyenkamp, adjointe aux communications et à la sensibilisation pour la CNS. « Ils aident les jeunes à se familiariser avec l’environnement naturel grâce à une pêche responsable et durable. » Les jeunes pêcheurs à la ligne ont profité de deux journées amusantes d’éducation sur

l’intendance, de pêche avec remise à l’eau et d’une canne à pêche et d’une boîte à pêche gratuites à rapporter à la maison.

Des invités spéciaux des Water Rangers étaient également sur place pour enseigner aux jeunes comment évaluer la qualité de l’eau au moyen de trousses d’analyse scientifique, tandis que des membres de l’Ottawa Flyfishers Society leur ont donné les rudiments de la pêche à la mouche. « Ces camps ont une valeur considérable, comme la promotion de l’écosanté, », ajoute Mme Nyenkamp. « Les enfants ont la chance de pêcher toute la journée, de se faire de nouveaux amis, de se rapprocher de leur environnement local et de mieux le connaître. » La CNS travaille en partenariat avec ses 16 municipalités membres pour partager des espaces naturels et offrir des possibilités de loisirs sur terre et sur l’eau.

CORNWALL (Ontario) - Les services d’incendie de la ville de Cornwall (CFS) ont rappelé aux résidents de rester en sécurité sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent cet été.

Lundi 12 août, le CFS a aidé à secourir deux personnes du fleuve Saint-Laurent après le chavirement de leur bateau près du pont international de la voie maritime.

Le bateau est entré en collision avec une barge dans l’eau près du pont. La barge était à l’eau dans le cadre des efforts en cours pour démanteler les jetées immergées dans l’ancien pont international de la voie maritime.

Selon le chef des pompiers Pierre Voisine, les conditions de l’eau dans cette partie de la

rivière sont plus dangereuses que la normale à cette période de l’année en raison des quantités anormalement élevées d’eau sortant du barrage Moses-Saunders.

«Les plaisanciers doivent être plus prudents dans ce domaine, surtout lorsqu’ils voyagent la nuit», a déclaré Voisine. «Compte tenu des niveaux d’eau élevés que nous connaissons cette année, les précautions de sécurité sont encore plus importantes.»

Voisine a déclaré qu’il y avait deux passagers plus âgés sur le bateau, mais qu’il n’y avait pas eu de blessé.

Le chef Voisine rappelle aux navigateurs de toujours utiliser leurs lumières lorsqu’ils voyagent la nuit et que tous les passagers doivent porter un gilet de sauvetage.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Le jeudi 15 août, les services d’appui aux femmes victimes de violence sexuelle à Cornwall, SD&G et Akwesasne (SASS) ont organisé leur cinquième barbecue d’été Chalk the Walk et ont également célébré leur 25e anniversaire.

«Nous avons ouvert les portes au public afin qu’il puisse venir et en apprendre un peu plus sur qui nous sommes et ce que nous faisons», a déclaré Angela Vinet, directrice exécutive du

SASS. «Nous offrons aux clients un espace chaleureux et confortable pour recevoir des conseils et se faire soigner», a déclaré Vinet. «Nous travaillons également à enseigner au grand public ce qu’est la violence sexuelle et le consentement.»

L’année dernière, le SASS a fourni plus de 3 000 heures de conseil à 982 clients. Ils ont également organisé 86 activités d’éducation du public qui ont touché près de 3 000 membres de la communauté.

2008, la CNS organise deux camps par année dans des sites d’ici. Au cours des dernières années, les recettes des activités de financement ont permis de construire des quais accessibles agrandis dans les aires de conservation et des rampes de mise à l’eau publiques, ce qui a permis à la CNS d’élargir sa programmation estivale récréative et éducative pour offrir cinq camps cette année.

La CNS prête également des cannes à pêche et des trousses d’analyse de la qualité de l’eau gratuitement à son bureau de Finch. Le prêt gratuit de cannes à pêche est offert dans le cadre d’un partenariat avec Ontario Power Generation.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Shannon Ferguson and Kris McCarthy, the co-founders of FanSaves were awarded $100,000 after winning the RC100 Startup competition held by the Renfrew County Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC).

FanSaves is a mobile app that allows sports fans to support their favourite sports teams or other organizations while also getting great deals from local businesses.

“The mobile app gives fans discounts and deals from sponsors of their favourite teams and organizations,” FanSaves states in a press release. “Each redemption is tracked in a dashboard, unique to their team or business, giving them customer analytics and a way to track return on investment.”

Ferguson said that FanSaves already planned on how to use this investment to grow their business.

“One of the first things we are doing is to launch the FanSaves Innovation Project in Renfrew,” she said.

The innovation project will be starting this fall and participants will be invited to listen to guest speakers about the challenges a rural start-up like FanSaves faced while launching and to take part in hackathons to solve those challenges.

Ferguson said that some of the participants will be hired on by FanSaves to start a satellite office in Renfrew.

Part of the funding will also go towards increased marketing for FanSaves, which is launching a new version of their app on Sept. 1.

Ferguson said she was grateful for the support she received from the Renfrew CFDC and hopes that the success of FanSaves will change the perspectives she feels some have on rural tech start-ups.

Seniors, healthcare, housing focus for NDP federal candidate CORNWALL, Ontario – Kelsey Catherine Schmitz is the federal candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP) for the riding of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry.

In an interview with Seaway News Schmitz outlined some of her platform.

“I believe in progressive values and taking care of the people around you,” she said. “I believe we need to take care of each other. I definitely want to be focused on sustainable living, access to good jobs and affordable housing.”

Schmitz outlined how she believed that her party was the best suited to form the next government. “I think the NDP is focused on helping

people,”she said.“People shouldn’t be focused on where their next meal or medication is coming from. The NDP will do a better job of listening to Canadians.”

Schmitz said she wanted to run in this Kelsey Catherine election to give back to Schmitz her community. “I was looking for an opportunity to give back to the community,” she said. “A lot of people from our region made me who I am, teachers, mentors, and members of my parent’s church who were like a second family. The big reason I wanted to run was to give back to those

people.” Schmitz was born in Cornwall and raised in Newington and Ingleside. Her great-grandfather founded the Rochon-et-fils butcher shop in Cornwall. She has spent her career in education.

She earned a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Society, Culture and Literacies from the University

of Ottawa.

She currently is a program manager for Expeditions to Communities at Students on Ice Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting experiential learning for students in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Ontario Renovates - new application round opens Monday, September 9th, 2019

Assistance available to low & modest income homeowners in Cornwall and SDG

Ontario Renovates is a popular home improvement program that assists low and modest income families and seniors in Cornwall and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.

Application forms for the program will be available as of Tuesday September 3rd, 2019 (in-person or online at cornwall.ca).

Program launch – applications will be received as of Monday, September 9th, Please note there is a dedicated amount of funding so interested homeowners are encouraged to apply early (not before Monday September 9th, 2019).

2019 Application Priorities 1) First time applicants 2) Accessibility requests (whether first time applicant or not) NOTE: All other requests that are not one of the two priorities will be added to a call list and only contacted if there are available funds to assist with further requests.

Ontario Renovates has two components: • A Necessary Home Repair component where eligible homeowners can receive a maximum forgivable loan of $19,000, which is earned over a ten year period. Projects that may qualify under this component include upgrades to heating systems, doors, windows, roofs & electrical systems.

• An Accessibility Modification component where eligible homeowners can receive a maximum grant of $5,000.

Projects that may qualify under this component include ramps and handrails, etc.

Participating homeowners must have an assessed house value below $238,489 and be below the following income limits (per household): Household of 1 $42,800

Household of 2 $51,000

Household of 3-4 $58,100

Household of 5 or more $63,200
