For Remembrance Day 2019 police, the RCMP veterans, cadets, and active duty members of the military marched from the Cornwall Legion on Second and Cumberland streets down to the Cornwall Cenotaph on the corner of Bedford St.

CORNWALL, Ontario – At the monthly Cornwall Police Service (CPS) Board Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 7, CPS Chief Danny Aikman asked the board for four additional officers to supplement vacancies in his frontline force.

The Chief explained to the board that a

little over 20 per cent of his frontline force is currently unavailable for work. The reasons range from long term disability, to modified duties, to suspension with pay.

Currently one officer is off on long term disability, three are off on Worker Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) claims, two are absent due to off-duty injury, four are on modified duties and one officer is suspended with pay.

Chief Aikman said that these 11 absent officers are not expected to return to work in the near future. Aikman explained that the officers that are on modified duties have all been diagnosed with Occupational Stress Injuries, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which in his report to the Board, Aikman says is an emerging trend.

United Way Wine & Gourmet Tasting making its return NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – The United Way Wine & Gourmet Tasting is returning on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Nav Centre.

The event is one of the most anticipated events of the fall season, now in its seventh year, organizers Karen and Ray Brunet say that it will be better than ever.

In addition to the complimentary wine tastings, there will also be tasting for craft beers as well as ciders this year.

The Brunets want to let the public know that this event is about fundraising and not about just the wine, beer and cider. There will also be non-alcoholic options available at the event.

Alongside the refreshments, there will also be live musical entertainment from the Kealy-Greer All Star Band and the Dueling Pianos.

The event is the United Way’s signature fundraiser during their fall campaign. Money will be raised through ticket sales for the Wine & Gourmet tasting as well as through a live auction and prizes.

Live auction items include a trip to Quebec City, a three-course dinner for six at Sheep’s Head Bistro and a hot tub.

Prizes eligible for anyone who buys a ticket to the event include a designer wallet with $1,000 in cash from Welch LLP and $5,000 earrings from Pommier Jewellers.

The most anticipated prize however might be the wine tree from Olson Fab. Not only does the winner get the tree, they also get wine for a year. If a guest to the event is more in the mood for beer, than there is also a beer tree with 200 cans of craft beer.

“The importance of this event to our community is three-fold,” said Karen Brunet.

“The United Way supports 14 local organizations who in turn support our youth, our seniors and those with special needs.”

He explained that this is not the first time that a CPS Chief has asked for additional resources, pointing to a similar situation in 1995 an 2007.

The current shortage is coming at a time where the police are seeing a growing demand for service. Calls for service in 2018 rose by 13 per cent from the year before, and that calls for service for 2019 are currently 11 per cent higher than the previous year.

is the increase in mental health calls, the Chief explained that every night shift has at least one of these calls. Often this requires two officers to bring the subject of the call to hospital, and remain at the hospital for an average of an hour and 44 minutes.

“This keeps at least two officers tied up and creates more work for other frontline officers on the same shift,” Aikman said.

“So the cycle just continues and continues in terms of the growing workload.”

Aikman explained that if given the permission to hire four additional officers in 2020, that CPS would return to its authorized strength of 89 sworn officers through attrition.

“It is my duty as chief to bring this to the attention of the board,” he said. “It could affect officer safety and public safety.”

The Chief explained however, that due to the time it will take to hire these new officers and train them, overtime for the CPS will exceed 2018’s number of $268,000 and could be as high as $300,000.

“I’m not sure what the police budget will look like in December. I’m a little worried, but this is an issue that cannot be ignored,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement who sits on the CPS Board.

Aikman assured the Board that this was not a problem he would solve by throwing bodies at it, but said that rather he was committed to finding long term strategies to address the issue.

The Board voted unanimously in favour of granting the Chief’s request to hire four additional frontline officers for 2020.

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – The Glengarry Inter-Agency Group (GIAG) has partnered with the Cornwall Regional Entrepreneurs Artists & Technologists Exchange (CREATE) and RBC to deliver a digital skills program in Cornwall and SD&G. GIAG secured $30,000 in funding through the RBC Future Launch program which will cover the training for 30 participants in digital skills.

The digital skills curriculum will be delivered by CREATE through the Ontario Emerging Job Institute (OEJI). Skills that will be a focus of the course include web design, social media marketing, content writing, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

“This program is all about bridging the gap between academics to the workplace,” said Mike Belliveau, Regional Vice President for Eastern Ontario with RBC. “We are all going to be better for it. Canada will be better for it.”

A part of the program includes job placements with local employers through GIAG. “We will be offering subsidies to companies for job placements,” said Alex de Wit, Job Developer with GIAG. “We certainly see businesses that have needs for digital skills,” de Wit explained, pointing to sought after business skills like website creation and social media management.

Belliveau pointed to the need for these skills in the Cornwall region and said that

such skills could help keep youth in the region.

Classes for the program will be taught out of GIAG’s Cornwall office, 950 Boundary Rd. and will start on Tuesday Nov. 12.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Ontario Liberal Party leadership candidate Michael Coteau will be coming to Cornwall for a meet and greet at King George Restaurant on Montreal Rd. on Sunday, Nov. 17 at around 5:30 p.m.

Coteau has been MPP for the Don Valley East riding in Toronto since 2011. Under the government of Kathleen Wynne Coteau held multiple cabinet positions including Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Minister of Tourism, Minister of Youth Services and Minister for Social Services.

So far in the leadership race Coteau has promised to move towards free public transit to help fight climate change.

Coteau announced his run for the Liberal Leadership in June, in his announcing press release he took aim at Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford.

“Doug Ford says kids today aren’t worth the cost. That’s his message—Ontario doesn’t value you. I was that kid who was told someone like you doesn’t matter,” said Coteau. “And now, someone like me is taking a stand. The biggest waste we face in Ontario is the waste of human potential.

Doug Ford is in it for tax breaks to the wealthy and big corporations—and cuts for everyone else. I’m in it for children and families, our future.”

Coteau is currently facing four rivals for his party’s leadership including former Education Minister Mitzie Hunter, former Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca, Kate Graham, who ran unsuccessfully for the London North riding in the 2018 election and is an instructor at Western University, and Alvin Tedjo, who ran unsuccessfully in the Oakville NorthBurlington Riding in 2018 and is a former Liberal Party staffer.

Telethon raises over $150,000 for Hospice Cornwall

CORNWALL, Ontario – The annual YourTV Telethon in support of Carefor Hospice Cornwall raised a grand total of $158,400 in just six hours on Saturday, Nov. 9.

That is $5,000 more raised locally for Hospice than the previous year’s telethon which totaled at approximately $153,000.

While volunteers manned the phones taking in donations, the audience at home was entertained through a series of musical performances from such acts as Landslide, Til Whenever, Kevin Rivette, Mike McAnnany, Barry and Company and Syd Gardiner.

In addition to the musical entertainment, there were also personal testimonials from family members who had relatives stay at Hospice.

“We are very grateful for them sharing

their stories with us,” said Sandy Collette, Fundraising Coordinator for Hospice Cornwall in a previous interview with Seaway News. “We are bringing them back to a painful time in their lives, so we are very fortunate that they are willing to open to us.”

The money raised this year will go towards the hospice’s operating budget and also towards the replacement of the televisions in patients rooms.

Carefor Cornwall hopes to replace patient televisions with Smart ones that would allow them to have video calls with loved ones who cannot be with them during their time at hospice.

Company (SVTC) will be bringing a classic Disney character to life on stage, Mary Poppins, in their rendition of Mary Poppins Jr. The story centres on the Banks family, who are searching for a new nanny. Little do they know that the young woman who takes on the task will change their lives forever.

“Through Mary Poppins, the Banks family finds out what family really means,” said Corey Disotell, Director of the play.

The cast of 39 ranges in age from 7 to 17-years-old.

“It is really awesome that we are continually getting new faces involved with the company,” said Disotell. “The kids feel so much pressure with school, but when they get here, they are able to let that go.

They’ve become like a family here.”

The show will feature a variety of special events to bring the magic of Mary Poppins to the stage, which Disotell said was a challenge for the company at first.

“We are trying to stay true to the magic of the story,” he said. “How to portray the effects and magic that Disney portrayed was a challenge, but everyone is very happy.”

Father Kevin Maloney made remarks and said a prayer, as did Rev. Erin McIntyre.

Hugh Primeau, President of the Cornwall Legion gave a few comments about the importance of Remembrance Day. “I just wanted to say thank you, especially to our veterans, because of their sacrifices, we are able to gather here and commemorate our Remembrance Day,” he said.

“Without their sacrifices, we would not probably be here. To the citizens of Cornwall, thank you for helping with our poppy campaign and we thank you for coming out today. For those who skipped work, this is the place to be today. There is nothing more we can do, other than say thank you.”

Sara Lauzon, Cornwall’s Litter Historian, who co-hosted YourTV’s broadcast of the Remembrance Day ceremony, offered her thoughts on the historical significance of the sacrifice made by Canada’s veterans.

“To me, Remembrance Day is about reflecting on those who put their lives on the line, and continue to fight for our freedom.

It is a day commemorating great loss.

Thousands of men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice, they gave up their tomorrows, so we could have today,” she said.

“For Cornwall specifically, before the Second

World War, Cornwall had a population of 14,000. Over 4,000 men and women contributed to the war effort. This is one of the highest rates per capita, in Canada.”

SOUTH STORMONT–The Township of South Stormont passed a new cat by-law regulating felines in the township at their regular meeting on Oct. 23.

The by-law limits the number of cats permitted in a residential dwelling in urban areas to five.

Some residents are concerned that this restricts their ability to feed stray cats, but South Stormont Mayor Bryan McGillis however said that this is not the case, nor was that the aim of the by-law.

“Nobody is going to get a fine for feeding a cat,” he said. “What we’re trying to discourage is people from feeding stray cats.

If you find a stray cat, take it to the OSCPA to be neutered and released.”

In fact, the by-law as passed does not put into force any regulations specifically prohibiting the feeding of stray cats. The bylaw as was drafted in the Council’s Agenda only addresses the number of cats that are allowed within a dwelling.

Any urban dwelling that currently has more than five cats is allowed to retain up-to 10 through a grandfather clause, but will not be able to bring in more until they are below the imposed limit of five and at that point, five will be their maximum.

South Stormont Council felt the urgent need to look at their cat by-law after dozens of cats perished in a fire at a cat rescue in Ingleside over the summer.

McGillis acknowledged that the by-law

was in part aimed at the incident in Ingleside.

“That kind of thing should be done in a more rural setting,” he said. “A cat rescue shouldn’t be in a residential area.”

The by-law also includes possible next steps, such as an update to the pet licensing system, the creation of new by-law enforcement tools, and the inclusion of exotic pets.

The generosity of the Cornwall community is amazing and it isn’t even December yet.

As we get into the Christmas season, I wanted to share a few stories on the difference that charity and volunteering make in Cornwall. You might not see everyone in Cornwall who is making a difference. They might be your neighbours who help out at the Agapè Centre soup kitchen, or they might do their part by contributing to the many worthy causes in Cornwall.

In the past few weeks there have been a few major fundraisers held in support of the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF), the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the annual Hospice Telethon.

I would estimate, that these three events combined probably resulted in over $250,000 in donations from the Cornwall community towards worthy causes.

On Nov. 23, another major charity event will be taking place at the Nav Centre, the annual United Way Wine & Cheese.

The United Way does a lot in our community that goes unseen. They support Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall and the Boys and Girls Club so that kids get a

chance to have a real childhood and grow.

The United Way also supports Meals on Wheels, ensuring that our seniors are sustained with healthy wholesome meals. The United Way supports Counselling and Support Services, which ensures that those of us who are going through difficulties in life, have support when they need it.

The United Way supports 14 services and agencies in Cornwall and SD&G and without them, our community would be much poorer. The United Way is able to do all of this through community support. So many people would be worse off without these 14 organizations in the community, and they in turn rely on the United Way, and the United Way relies on us.

The Cornwall community raises hundreds of thousands every year that goes towards local charities. Equally and sometimes more important however, are the volunteer hours that members of the community donate to make these events and others happen.

We are just a few days away from the annual Santa Claus parade in Cornwall, an event that relies heavily on volunteers.

We are also on the brink of the start of the Sparky’s Toy Drive, and the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign.

Again, these events would not be pos-

sible without volunteers.

This community gives so much, and should be proud of that, however, if someone is reading this, and has not volunteered this year, maybe think about putting yourself out there.

Many times, I see many familiar faces at these events. There is a strong core group of volunteers in Cornwall who make these events happen, primarily, they are service club members. What I’m asking is that if someone sees an event or organization in

town that they feel strongly about, that they would not want to see disappear, then why not volunteer for them, even if it is only a couple of hours once a year.

We are on a verge of the season of giving, let’s not forget to thank the givers.

Too many trees Dear Editor, With the leaves from the trees gone, we can finally see the St .Lawrence River again. When we first moved to a condo on Water St. between Augustus and York St the view of the park and the river was spectacular.

In fact it was a major factor in buying our condo. After nine years this view is shrinking rapidly. In fact with all the trees that have been planted near the bike path, the view is severely limited.

Within a few more years, the view will be only geese and trees. A few years ago

the city planted lots of lilacs to the point that it not only ruined the view but made great hiding places for some who were up to no good, such as tobacco smugglers.

I understand the value of trees for ecology but please consider the

esthetics of a beautiful view of the river.

Our taxes certainly reflect the added value of water front condos. So let the city be more aware of the downside of too many trees and remove some.

Except that the bombastic separatist political firebrand blinked and reneged, leaving Quebec business computers to continue to operate on English language programming and denying Cornwall the possibility of a very attractive business development opportunity.

Separatist bombast To the Editor, In his recent speech, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney decried that Alberta’s resources sector provided funding for Canada and got very little in return.

In short, he challenged the federally administered balance of payments where Ottawa collects revenue from the provinces and redistributes revenue across Canada, with some provinces getting less than they contributed.

It was to be used as a day-care centre. The Kinsmen also gave the city $25,000 toward the cost of a scoreboard at the new civic complex. ...

Twenty-four hours later MacLean issued a statement that said Cherry’s comments were improper and he apologized for not saying anything while on the air. It probably saved his role in Hockey Night in Canada. As this is being written, Sportsnet hasn’t announced a replacement for Coach’s Corner. One possibility is moving Brian Burke into the slot. Burke would offer more substance and insight than Cherry who had become more of an entertainer than hockey analyst. Don’t feel too sorry for the 85-yearold Cherry. He’ll probably collect the rest of his million dollars for this season.

Sex was on the minds of several city aldermen during a 1975 November council meeting.

That is sex as in steamy movies shown in Cornwall movie theatres, especially the city-owned Capitol Theatre leased to the Markell Theatre Group.

Ald. Angelo Lebano kicked off the conversation when he said the city should take steps to halt the showing of what he perceived as disgusting sex-oriented movies on the Capitol Theatre screen that were borderline pornography.

He admitted he had not viewed the movies but noted that titles said it all: “Dr. Feelgood’s Sex Clinic”, “Stop It Or You Will Go Blind”, “School of Erotic Entertainment” and “Dirty Lovers”.

And, he said, it shouldn’t just be the Capitol, the city should take steps to ban such movies at the privately-owned Palace and Port theatres and the Seaway Drive-in at Pitt and Tollgate Road.

Eric Markell, spokesperson for the Markell Group, pointed out that the Capitol did have family-oriented, Disneytype movies in the afternoons.

Markell and Por t manager Glen McGillivray told council to mind its own business. Both gave council a quick lesson in how the movie business worked when it came to what can be put on their screens.

“All our movies are approved by the Ontario censor board,” said McGillivray.

“There’s not a damn thing they (city) can do about it.”

“We are showing what people want, with the censor board’s approval” said

Markell, who noted that such movies were restricted to patrons over the age of 18.

Ald. Ken Bough joined his council colleague in railing against “sex-oriented” movies and called on the Stormont Christian Council to join the protest.

Bough suggested the pastors organize protests outside the theatres and said he would be the first to sign up.

Meanwhile, a representative of the provincial censorship board had some advice for the city if it wanted to challenge what the government censors had approved: Hire a good team of lawyers and get ready to spend a lot of money. *********** Five months after she was run down on the sidewalk by a driver fleeing police, a 16-year-old high school student died of her injuries in hospital on Nov. 16, 1975, The 24-year-old driver was wanted by police after he failed to return to Joyceville Prison, where he was serving a three-year sentence, while on a weekend pass. He was serving three years.

The teen was walking on the Cumberland Street sidewalk in the Ninth Street area when the stolen car went out of control, with city police in hot pursuit, jumped the curb and struck her. The driver was arrested at the scene.

A few weeks after the June 2 tragedy, Judge Michael Fitzpatrick took no mercy on the driver who was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The judge gave him the maximum five years along with a year’s worth of sentences to be served consecutively, bringing the total time to just over six years plus the two years he still had his original sentence.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Fresh off a twoweek tour of the Maritimes, comedian Derek Edwards is returning to Cornwall and he’s bringing the laughs with him.

“I’m looking to share with the audience a conscience free chuckle,” he said in an interview with Seaway News.

Edwards explained that while it is hard to avoid politics, people might need a break from the recent federal election.

“Now I’m looking for almost anything to cleanse the palette,” he said.

Edwards finds humour in everyday situations, he explained a recent encounter he had with a police officer in Northern ON. “I was driving up north at around 2 a.m. and was getting tailgated by this guy behind me,” Edwards explained. “He was on me, about two feet from my bumper, and then the sirens go on.”

He said that when he pulled over, the officer explained to him that he was hoping Edwards would speed up so he could add to his ticket.

Edwards said he just had to laugh.

“He’s got a gun and a taser, so you know to show him some respect,” Edwards chuckled.

Edwards said that he’s excited to return to Cornwall and to Aultsville Theatre.

“It is such an intimate venue,” he said.

“The shows have been fun and successful so far, and the people of Cornwall are in for some good-natured laughs. Come on out to an escape hatch from the gnarliness of a screwed-up world.”

Derek Edwards will be performing at Aulstville Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 14.

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) took to the woods on Saturday, Nov. 2 for their annual fall clean-up.

There were 25 volunteers who pitched in to help tidy the trails, which was a good number because there was much debris to be cleared after the windstorm that took place the day before.

“It was like a war zone,” said FOTST President Vic Leroux when describing some of the areas where work was carried out.

Working in groups of two or three, the volunteers were able to remove many branches and small trees. When volunteers encountered a downed tree to big to be removed by hand, they marked its location and FOTST say they will move the tree at a later date when the necessary equipment is available.

In a statement, FOTST says that they are ready for another winter outdoor sporting season.

“Be on the lookout for the opening of the trails! As soon as there is enough snow on the ground, the trails will be groomed. As was the case in previous years, FOTST will be offering weekend rentals of XC ski and snowshoe packages at an affordable rate.

Elementary school teachers could be on strike by November 25 NICK SEEBRUCH

ONTARIO – The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced on Nov. 8 that it received a no-board report and would be in a legal position to strike by Monday, Nov. 25.

“ETFO is fighting for investment, not cuts in education, but Doug Ford’s Education Minister Stephen Lecce isn’t listening,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond. “While ETFO is now in a legal position to take strike action in 17 days, we will continue to focus on contract talks in an attempt to arrive at

a deal that improves student learning conditions and educator working conditions.”

ETFO requested the no board report from the Ontario Ministry of Labour on Nov. 4, for its Teacher / Occasional Teacher and Education Worker Central Bargaining Tables. A no board report can be requested if talks between negotiating labour parties break down and once received, initiate a 17 day cooling off period between the two sides.

education so that our students can succeed,” said Hammond.

On Nov. 1, the ETFO had voted 98 per cent in favour of taking strike action.

“While our Government has been a reasonable and constructive force at the bargaining table – focused on keeping kids in class – today, ETFO has taken another escalating step towards a strike which will disproportionately hurt our kids,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce at the time. “Strike action caused by unions could mean school closures, disruption, and uncertainty for students and parents. I

support a deal, not a strike. Our team remains unequivocal in our determination to land deals with our labour partners as soon as possible to keep our kids in the classroom.”

The ETFO represents 83,000 teachers from across Ontario. If an agreement is not reached between the two sides in the coming weeks, elementary school teachers could be on strike by Nov. 25.

Durant la Semaine nationale de l’immigration francophone, le premier forum « Action Immigration Francophone », qui avait lieu le 7 novembre à la municipalité de Cornwall, fut un grand succès.

La mairesse Bernadette Clément, accompagnée par la présidente de l’ACFOSDG Dianne Poirier et Bertin Obiang, agent de projet du Réseau de soutien à l’immigration francophone de l’Est de l’Ontario, a accueilli chaleureusement toutes les forces actives, anglophones et francophones, impliquées en immigration à l’hôtel de ville.

Le but de ce forum était de se doter d’un plan d’action concret pour l’accueil et l’établissement à Cornwall, StormontDundas-Glengarry. Pour se faire, il y a eu d’abord un moment pour constater les enjeux et les opportunités de l’immigration francophone.

De plus, nous avons reconnu le sérieux des efforts déployés de toutes les parties prenantes tout en confirmant leur volonté de travailler ensemble pour bien desservir en français les immigrantes et immigrants qui choisiront Cornwall.

Le moment fort de cette rencontre, fut le partage d’expériences de deux immigrantes, Clotilde Clarisse Megnidjou Yepseu et Ouertani Manel qui ont choisi de vivre avec leur famille à Cornwall. Leurs propos étaient vrais, touchants mais révélateurs qu’il faut faire autrement et cela de façon inclusive dès maintenant. « Après tant d’années d’investissement

The missing female has been identified as Tannis WEIBE, age 30, of South Stormont, Ontario.

She was last seen on November 7, 2019 at approximately 5:30 p.m., from a residence on Myers Road in South Stormont.

On November 9, 2019 members of Emergency Response Team (ERT) and an OPP helicopter located Tannis WEIBE deceased.

Cherished grandmother of Jacob, Annika, Paige and Ivy. Loving daughter of Mary (née Novak) Fuhr of Kamloops, B.C. and stepdaughter of Nettie (née Janyk) Turner of Vernon, B.C. Dear sister of Gary Turner of Kamloops, B.C., Jan Pearce of Calgary, AB. Predeceased by her father Fred Turner of Vernon, B.C. and her brother Tom Pearce of Calgary, AB. Sharryle retired in 2016 from teaching English as a Second Language and Literacy for the TR Leger School in Cornwall/Alexandria.

Sharryle also worked for Community Living Stormont County and Community Living Alexandria. She was dedicated to both jobs for over 25 years and reached many people in a deep and positive way. The Cornwall BMX Club recently competed in Long Island, NY. Rylan Adams was Gold Cup champion number 2 in the 14 Novice Class. Carter Jackson took the number 5 Gold Cup in the 14 Intermediate Class. Finally, Sam Drouin had the number 7 Gold Cup in the 13 Expert Class.

Cornwall will surely be cheering on the Cornwall Sealions as they once again host the annual Snowflake Invitational. Results earned by the swimmers at this Swim Canada recognized event will count towards their qualifying times in larger competitions such as regionals.

The Cornwall Colts are having a rough season.

Cornwall Lions Bantam Girls Take Gold in Belleville PROVIDED BY CORNWALL LIONS BANTAM GIRLS

BELLEVILLE, Ontario – The Cornwall Lions Bantam Girls basketball team went undefeated this past weekend in their first major tournament. In the first game of the tournament, against Parry Sound, the Lions won 47-11. Jacie Pilon (14 points), Morgan Woods (13 Points) and Kade McDonald (8

points) led the Lion’s scoring, while Georgia Fourkiotis added 5 points including a 3-pointer. Inleigh Morrison, Isabelle Martin, Emma Legault, and Ella Fontaine also scored for the Lions.

In the final game of the preliminary round the Lions again dominated, this time against the host team from Belleville. In that game Woods scored 21 points while Fontaine,

During World War II, a young Canadian couple from Cornwall wrote love letters to each other across the Atlantic.

This letter between Donald and Pearl was given to us by a family friend. It is dated from June 3, 1944 while Donald was stationed in Scotland with the 45 Canadian Army Transport Company.

The Championship game in the A division featured a rematch between the Lions and the Clippers. In this game it was the Lions defense that led the way. The Lions starting unit struggled to score early and the Lions were held to only 3 points in the first quarter. But at the defensive end of the floor, Georgia Zummach, and Woods led the way with spectacular defensive performances.

With help from the rest of the starters as well as outstanding contributions by Legault and Abby Alejandrino during their limited minutes, the Lions defense held the Clippers to a single point to take a 14-1 half time lead. Pilon, Woods and McDonald once again led the scoring with a combined 28 points in the Lions 41-21 championship victory.

Darling Pearl, Just a few lines. I received your most welcome letter to-day. Sure happy to hear from you. To know you are fine and happy, that is the most nice part about it all; as I am the same.

Arrived back from Scotland. The most wonderful trip ever had. It sure is a nice and wonderful country, it was first time I ever was that far north. It did not get dark till after mid-night and not very long. Wish you could have been with me. I know you would have enjoyed yourself.

The university course was grand. Sure.

Grand. A lot of knowledge about Scotland and its people’s which I did not know. The people were so nice to us and hospitality was simply grand.

The trips out into the country to these old historical places, castles and monuments and small towns and villages nestled into the valleys surrounded by wooded hills, small streams and lakes. What a picturesque sight. The herds of wild Scottish cattle and deer, pheasants and grouse, thousands of rabbits darting here and there about the forests and fields. The farmers are small, but with their surrounding frames of stone walls and hedges, it sure was nice. Memories that I shall not forget.

Aberdeen is the nicest City in the British Isles. Each house and streets all public buildings, monuments and side works built of granite. I will tell you in my next letter of our visit to the granite quarry’s and the houses are so nice. Modern architecture and granite is so hard that storms and age does not make it look old. Buildings that have been up for 50 to 100 years look as if they were just recently built.

The City was so clean looking. No dust or litter lying about and people so happy, fresh looking and so friendly. When I will drift back to Canada, you was saying the grass is green, leaves and flowers out and I just do not know how I will like Canadian climate after being in this country. Not having enough snow to say I have seen snow. The grass is green the year round, and quite warm. Guess the only part of Canada where it resembles Britain is British Columbia, the Southern half.

Mom tells me Gordon, my brother has bought a home in Southern British Columbia, hope he likes it.

So you are decorating your bed room, that is swell. Gosh I love nice things, especially a nice home. I sure will appreciate a new home after being in the army. So long, I am counting the days now till I get back.

This week, our province marked National Skilled Trades and Technology Week. The government has made job training and employment an important priority. The unemployment rate fell to a 29-year low last spring, but our youth continue to struggle at finding a job, even though many of them have obtained a post-secondary education.

The government will not rest until it has alleviated this problem, which will only get worse if we aren’t ready to overcome the impact that emerging technology will have. It is expected that more than 25 percent of all jobs will be disrupted by technological changes in the coming decade and at least 50 percent of the workforce will need significant training just to stay employed.

An important first step begins with the implementation of an education curriculum that gives students the best tools for securing employment and leading a successful career. The technology revolution will change and eliminate traditional jobs as people demand new products and services. We need to develop an educational system that prepares our youth for the ever-changing demands of tomorrow. The future of today’s students and the future of our province depends on providing the right education and the job training, while ensuring our business environment remains competitive.

The government wants students to have the most up-to-date tools at their fingertips.

Multimedia resources, databases, websites, and Internet apps should all be available to help students learn, and give them the opportunity to gain experience using them. STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects are a main priority, and is being supported by a $200 million investment into a four-year math strategy and financial literacy program. I had the opportunity to tour Queen’s Engineering facilities a few weeks ago. I was amazed with the advanced equipment that students are working with, everything from 3-D printers to artificial intelligence, and robots. The very competitive and rapidly changing marketplace requires that our tradespeople are ready and comfortable with using the latest high-tech equipment. They will need these skills through every step of their work, from searching for their first job, to mastering higher skills and building a business. One in five Ontarians will be working in the trades, 200,000 alone in construction.

Today, women make up 48 percent of the workforce, but only 25 percent of the skilled trades and technology sectors. These are highly paid jobs, and this government is committed to ensuring that women can look forward to more opportunities in this rewarding field.

This week, our Finance Minister, Rod Phillips, delivered the Fall Economic Statement. It is important to get the facts straight. This government is spending $1.9 billion more on healthcare and $1.2 billion more on education than last year, while reducing the deficit to $9.0 billion, $1.3 billion less than what was identified in our spring budget. The update also confirmed the government is putting an additional $3 billion back in people’s pockets through various tax cuts and tax credits. CORNWALL, Ontario - A 24-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on Nov. 8, 2019 and charged with domestic assault and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged during an argument with her boyfriend on November 8th, the woman assaulted him and police were contacted to investigate. During the investigation, she was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. Her name was not released as it would identify the victim in the matter.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Carson Giles, 25, of Lunenburg was arrested on Nov. 10, 2019 and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80. It is alleged during the early morning hours on Nov. 10, the man was operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol in the area of Sydney Street and First Street. The man was taken into custody during a traffic stop, was charged accordingly and released to appear in court on Nov. 19, 2019.

POSSESSION OF COCAINE

CORNWALL, Ontario - Kayla Harps, 29, of Cornwall was arrested on Nov. 10, 2019 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged in April 2019, the woman was in possession of stolen electronics and police were contacted to investigate. A warrant was subsequently issued for her arrest. On November 10th, 2019, the woman attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. She was taken into custody on the strength of the warrant and released to appear in court on Dec. 17, 2019.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Terry Russell, 24, of Newington and Eric Lacombe, 36, of Alexandria were both arrested on Nov. 9, 2019 and charged with possession of cocaine. It is alleged during a traffic stop on November 9th, the men were found to be in possession of cocaine and an investigation ensued. During the investigation, both men were taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on Dec. 12, 2019.
