Cycling across Canada for mental health NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
CORNWALL, Ontario – Cyclist Pierre Morin rolled into Cornwall on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 18 and he had good company with him, a team of cyclists from Minimax Express. Since July 20, Morin has been on a journey to cycle across Canada to raise awareness about mental health. He began in Tofino, BC, at the edge of the Pacific Ocean with the goal of reaching St. Johns, NFLD. Morin has lost family members who have struggled with their mental health, including his uncle Roger Audet, who he described as his best friend. Along the way, Morin has been collecting
donations and distributing them to local mental health organizations. Morin believes he is close to $20,000 in collected donations so far. Minimax is the major sponsor for Morin’s endeavour. When he arrived in Cornwall they contributed a $2,500 donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association local Champlain East office which was matched with another $2,500 from Morin himself from funds he has collected. Andrew Bogora, General Manager of Finance and Technology for Minimax said that the company was a strong believer in supporting the cause of mental health and were happy to contribute to Morin and accompany him for part of his journey. Minimax Express, which happens to be
turning 30 this year, sent five of its team members including CEO Yves Poirier to meet Morin in Morrisburg and cycle with him into Cornwall on Wednesday. Other major supporters of Morin are posted on the side of the Tesla Camper which has followed him throughout his journey. Morin has slept in the Tesla at night underneath a map on a ceiling of the vehicle with which he tracks his progress. Morin will now be taking a bit of a break before getting back onto the road. He took a spill on the Long Sault Parkway on his shoulder, on the same side of his body where he broke his collar bone six weeks prior to the start of his journey. He plans on reaching the province of New Brunswick before stopping for the year and finishing his trek in 2022.

CCH Radiothon to support new breast cancer treatment pogram CORNWALL, Ontario - Corus radio’s 15th annual Caring Hearts Radiothon is set to kick off tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021. The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF) has raised over $1.2 million since the Radiothon began a decade and a half ago. Listeners can tune into Boom 101.9 or 104.5 Fresh Radio and make a donation to help the CCHF support new programs and advanced technology. Unlike previous years, this year the Radiothon will be entirely virtual. Proceeds go towards helping the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) purchase equipment and expand medical services. The CCH, with the support of Dr. Sahar Shirazi, is hoping to be one of the few hospitals in Ontario to offer Breast Seed Localization (BSL) treatment for women with breast cancer. “There’s not that many hospitals in Canada that offer this program,” said Dr. Shirazi. “So, it’s really good to have it in Cornwall..even Vancouver doesn’t offer it yet.” Shirazi joined the CCH in January 2020, right on the eve of the global pandemic. Shirazi’s goal from the start was to work with the hospital to offer more advanced medical options for patients. Breast Seed Localization is a newer technology that
uses a small grain sized device to help doctors find nonpalpable (harder to find) tumours. While less invasive than the standard treatment options, the new technology also allows for more flexibility when planning surgeries. Shirazi’s personal and professional experience with breast cancer recovery made the BSL project even more special. Shirazi’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Working as a pharmacist at the time, Shirazi went back to school and earned a medical degree. She completed her fellowship at the University of Ottawa, which helped provide her with connections in the medical field to help make the BSL program possible for Cornwall. “We’ve had that base level of care for thirty years...it is extremely exciting to see a project like this bring options for patients...it warms the heart and it makes a real impact on people’s lives every day,” said Amy Gillespie, director of the CCHF. Listeners who want to help Dr. Shirazi and the team at CCH continue to make a positive impact on their patient’s lives can donate online: http://cornwallhospitalfoundation.ca/http://cornwallhospitalfoundation.ca/ or by calling 613 935 7762. New this year, you can also donate $25 by texting CCH to 80100 on your mobile device.

5 facts about heat-related illnesses
As heat waves become increasingly common during the summer, the risk of developing a heat-related illness becomes more likely. Here are five things you should know about conditions such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion. 1. They can present in numerous ways. Symptoms of heat-related illnesses include dizziness, fainting, headache, fatigue, flushed or clammy skin, muscle cramps, confusion, heat rash and an elevated body temperature. 2. Older adults are at a higher risk. A loss of mobility can make it difficult for seniors to stay hydrated. Plus, the sensation of thirst decreases with age. Older adults who live alone are particularly vulnerable. 3. Some medications reduce heat tolerance. These include medications for high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, allergies and certain heart conditions. Always ask your pharmacist about the side effects of your medications. 4. Extreme heat can aggravate chronic conditions. Conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, lung disease and diabetes decrease your body’s ability to adapt to changes in temperature. 5. There are ways to reduce the risks. While the anchor will remain housed at the roundabout year-round, the canoe will act as a piece of seasonal public art that will be displayed during the warmer months of the year. The anchor was pulled from the river downstream of the R.H. Saunders Generating Station in Cornwall. It is unknown how it got there, or from which ship it may have come from.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Stormont, Dundas, South Glengarry incumbent Conservative MP Eric Duncan has announced that his campaign office is up and running. At the request of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Sunday, Aug. 15, Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon dissolved Parliament and set a federal election date for Sept. 20. “We continue to be overwhelmed by the strong support here in Cornwall and SD&G. We are off to a great start, and I’m grateful to our “Big Blue Machine” of volunteers and supporters that continue to help out each election,” said Duncan in a statement sent to media on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 17. “More than anything, we’ve noticed the anger of Canadians for this unnecessary $600 million election just as we get reopened and reunited with friends and family. People see this decision by Justin Trudeau as very selfish and self-serving. With the serious wildfires in British Columbia and Northern Ontario, the heartbreaking and dangerous situation in Afghanistan, and a potential fourth wave of COVID-19, I think it is going to backfire on the Liberals.” Campaign Manager Adrian Bugelli, who is taking an unpaid leave of absence as Duncan’s Executive Assistant, said that their campaign would be holding smaller events, with more details to come in the coming weeks. “We are looking forward to hosting many smaller, local events throughout the riding in the coming weeks as a safe way to connect with thousands of voters and to get our positive message out,” said Campaign Manager Adrian Bugelli. “Although it’s been less than two years since being first elected, Eric has gained a lot of new supporters in the riding and we are seeing many of them offer their support to our campaign, which is great to see. While none of the other parties have even announced candidates, we are firing away on all cylinders and taking nothing for granted.” Duncan’s campaign office is located at 327 Montreal Road with a toll-free number, 1-855505-3742 and campaign email address, info@EricDuncan.ca

What does a federal election mean to us? NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
I have often said that the most important election for Canadians is local, municipal elections, and I still believe that’s true. That being said, what does or what should a federal election mean to us? Before I really get into this, let me first say that I have not nor will I endorse any candidate or party in this election. This column will be my independent observations and evaluations of the election, the parties involved, and some of the candidates. Despite the rhetoric and passion of a federal election campaign, decisions at the federal level have only the slimmest of immediate impacts on the day-to-day lives of individual Canadians. Additionally, in most cases, the goings on and the interests of an individual federal riding has little impact on the government. I for one laugh at everyone who has personal animosity to Justin Trudeau, or any federal leader. They do not ever think about you and they don’t even know that you exist so those Canadians who are out there waiving their “F* Trudeau” flags (which I saw in Pierre Poilievre’s riding of Nepean-Carleton while visiting this weekend) are just jokes to me and I think should be treated as such. Trudeau doesn’t
care about your flag and neither does anyone else other than people who already agree with you. Again, a municipal election impacts the dayto-day issues that matter to the lives of individuals far more than a federal election, so how should we approach this federal election? Well for one, vote splitting is a fallacy put forth by major parties to keep you from voting with your heart. I say, vote with your heart. If there is an issue you care about, vote for the candidate that best represents your view of that issue. At the end of the day, what is more important than who won are numbers on the board. If a party represents your view on climate change, but you don’t vote for that party’s candidate in your riding, even if you know they will lose, then don’t expect the federal government to represent that view because you didn’t vote for what you believe in at the polls. What you believe is right for Canada will not be represented if you fall into the trap of not voting for a candidate because they won’t win. Finally, let’s talk about what to look for in a local candidate. Despite their best efforts, not every candidate will make it to your door and for many, this election will pass without a single knock on the door from a candidate. For those of you lucky enough to get the chance to
talk to a candidate one-on-one, there are a few things that you should come away from that conversation knowing. A federal candidate should be able to tell you, why they are running; what issues matter to them. They should be able to tell you what a federal MP does for their local riding. Lastly, ask every federal candidate you get a chance to speak to about what they hope has changed in their riding at the end of their term and how they will affect that change. Other than party leaders and cabinet ministers, an MP is just one of a multitude in a
system that enforces generalities and uniformity. If you want results from your MP, then talk in local terms, not national, despite this being a national election. Make sure that they represent your interests, whether they be major issues like climate change, or local issues, like the matter of your municipality purchasing federally held waterfront land in Cornwall. What are your thoughts in this federal election? Email your Letters to the Editor to nseebruch@seawaynews.media
Renaissance Association, a volunteer, grassroots group, was created last December and in view of new construction along the waterfront and the recent demolition of the harbor’s warehouse. The group’s mission is to address key issues including safety, policing, sub-standard properties, cleanliness matters and more. Furthermore the Association wishes to foster a new image through the introduction of beautification projects and other
activities. Denis has attended many Association’s meetings therefore he is aware of the group’s goals and action plan which are captured in multiple reports that contain over 35 recommendations. Mark MacDonald, Chair, L’Association Renaissance Association, myself and other keen executive members, are therefore looking forward to working with Denis and others in our pursuit to see Montreal Rd.

on the website and which has been so well maintained throughout the years, is being proposed in your editorial for sale or dissolution? WHY? Every municipality, city, town has a designated City Hall. They become landmarks which are normally located in a prime location and easily accessible for the general public and their everyday needs. Ours does exactly that. To even consider permanently relocating Council to the bowels of the Civic Complex, in my opinion, is absolutely ludicrous. City Hall mainly houses the administration
offices (Mayor, Council, Council Chambers) with accessible, convenient access for all residents; the Human Resources Department for all City employees; and the Clerk’s Department/Tax Department which provide multiple convenient services, again, to all City residents—one prime location. To even think of eliminating that locale makes zero sense and gives total disregard to the people of this City and total disregard for the prominence of a City. City Hall and Council Chambers therein has received and entertained prominent high-level
dignitaries throughout the years. Not only the Mayor and Council but all the staff managed to do an excellent job. We’ve managed to demolish our elegant Capital theatre and so many other landmarks in our City. Now you are suggesting that we sell our City Hall. This isn’t a budget issue for two councillors. There are too many other things we could look at that actually make sense. That will be for another time. This item makes zero sense for our City and for our residents. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Carr returning to Council Dear Editor, The recent announcement that Denis Carr will serve on council once again is welcome news since one of his primary goals in the next year and a half is to address long-standing issues in the east end, an initiative which would certainly be supported by a large segment of the population in the Renaissance district. Indeed, the district has been attracting a lot on attention since the L’Association
Sell City Hall?
Dear Editor, What on earth are we doing? When I heard that Council meetings were being held in Salons A & B at the Complex, I thought and believed that it was because of the pandemic—which is definitely not yet over. I again thought, that is definitely a smart move considering the ability to apply social distancing; and because the Salons cannot presently be rented out, it was a good use of unused space. However, the pandemic, hopefully, will not be here forever. But the municipality’s identity with an actual “City Hall,” which shows so well

OPINION
Hard to see how Duncan can lose Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings
EDITORIAL@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM
When Trudeau the Younger (aka The Trust Fund Kid) fired the starter’s pistol to get the election race – the one nobody else wanted - under way, Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry incumbent Eric Duncan was off and running ... by himself. For the next several days he was the only one in the race. The Liberals, New Democrats and Greens were still looking for someone to put in the race, as if the election call caught them off guard. It was like, “Hey, anybody wanna run?” They can forget about catching Duncan. He is miles ahead. Not only is he a formidable candidate, he has one of the best-operated, best-funded riding machines in the country. In 2019, the record showed that the federal association had a nest-egg of $192,277, fourth richest in Eastern Ontario. (Breaking news! At this writing the Liberals found a candidate after being turned down by what was described as a couple of excellent prospects. He’s former city cop Denis Moquin.) Duncan was elected in 2019 with a 15,209 majority. There is no reason to believe that the Liberals can make much of a dent. There is every reason to believe Duncan will take at
least 50% of the ballots cast. Duncan’s predecessor Guy Lauzon won four straight elections with more than 50% of the vote. Duncan had around 53% in 2019. Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry has morphed into one of the safest Progressive Conservative seats in the country. Even the Liberal friendly Toronto Star acknowledged that in a recent story on the riding. In 2011 and 2015 the Liberals had a super star candidate in Bernadette Clement. She didn’t even come close. In her better performance, 2015, she finished 6,600 votes behind Lauzon. That is called a landslide.
CAMPAIGN CHATTER - The more I see and hear Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet, the more I like him. He is a major obstacle for the Liberals in La Belle Province and that bodes well for the Tories. - A cynic could suggest that the $500 handed out to the 75-and-over gang was the ancient ploy of a government trying to buy votes with taxpayers’ money. Most of the bank deposits were made the day before the election was called. - At age 33, Duncan has claimed several political firsts. At 18, he was the youngest person to hold office in the United Counties. At 22, he became the youngest mayor in the United Counties. He became the youngest United Counties warden. And, when he succeeded Guy Lauzon in 2019 he became the youngest MP to represent a United Counties riding. And, he is the first openly gay federal
EVERY TUESDAY
Conservative MP. - The Toronto Star said the openly gay Duncan has an opportunity to exert a “lasting influence on the Conservative Party.” - If the Conservatives form the next government, it is a good bet that Duncan will be given a cabinet post. He has a big fan in leader Erin O’Toole. - The buzz is that the local Liberals don’t expect to do much against Duncan but are setting their sights on taking down Conservative MPP Jim McDonell with someone described as a “crackerjack candidate.” THIS MONTH CIRCA 1975 – Three Montreal men didn’t have time to spend any of the $9,000 they made off with in a bold afternoon armed robbery of the Bank of Nova Scotia in the Brookdale Plaza. They were arrested by OPP officers Hugh McClements and Chris McDonell near Lancaster just three hours after the heist. The money, two loaded handguns and a sub-machine gun were found in the vehicle. ... Cornwall’s first chief administrative officer (CAO) Maurice Engels left for London, Ont. as that city’s commissioner of community services with a staff of 700. Engels would become London’s CAO. During his two-years in Cornwall, Engels had push back from a small group of aldermen not happy with the new system which they believe took away some of their power. ... The city was studying a proposal to take over operation of the Summerstown Airport. ... Lining up against incumbent New
Democratic Party MPP George Samis in the Cornwall and Cornwall Township riding were Rev. Rudy Villeneuve (Conservative) and Madeleine Germain (Liberals). Premier Bill Davis had called an election for Sept. 18. It was a bold move by the popular priest. His decision didn’t sit well with the autocratic Bishop Eugene (Rocky) Larocque. The bishop’s problem was that Father Rudy was more popular among Catholics (and non-Catholics) than the bishop. Cornwall Police Department extended the deadline for bicycles in the city to be registered after 5,000 owners registered their two-wheelers. There were an estimated 12,000 bicycles in the city. The fine for an unregistered bicycle was $5. TRIVIA This current member of city council was the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate in the 1995 provincial election, when the riding was called Cornwall-Cornwall TownshipCharlottenburgh, and the NDP candidate in the 1997 federal election. Riding was called Stormont-Dundas. TRIVIA ANSWER Alexandria was first named Priest’s Mills. It was named Alexandria in honour of Bishop Alexander Macdonell, the first Roman Catholic bishop of Upper Canada.

Post birth healing: Breastfeeding positions to reduce strain
MOVEMENT MATTERS
NATASHA INGRAM MOVE THERAPEUTICS
Pregnancy, labor and delivery are truly amazing experiences but unfortunately they can also come with their own complications, and it might not end there. A large majority of women struggle with breastfeeding for several different reasons. Women need to know that there are professionals at their disposal that can help with breastfeeding problems. Lactation
consultants, midwives, obstetricians, and family doctors can help with problems such as latching, breast engorgement, mastitis, not enough or too much breast milk. Physiotherapists can help with body mechanics while breastfeeding to avoid and prevent overuse and strain injuries while you heal from your vaginal or belly birth. Here are a few tips and tricks to consider when breastfeeding in sitting: 1. Sit evenly on your sitting bones to avoid strain on your perineum 2. Place a pillow in your lower back to avoid pressure on your tailbone 3. Position your rib cage above/stacked on your pelvis for optimal lung and core function 4. Bring your baby up to your breast, not your breast down to your baby which

At the St. Joseph’s Villa, on Sunday August 22, 2021, Côme Chevrier of Cornwall passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was 93. Beloved husband to his wife of 69 years, Pierrette (née Parent) and cherished father to their three sons, Claude, Alain (Patricia), and Marc (Kelly). Proud grandfather of Micheline, Claire (Ben), Joelle (Mei), Natalie, Mathieu (Kimberly), Nicholas, Matthew and Carly. Dear son of the late Eléonore & Noé Chevrier. Died unexpectedly at home on March 28, Palm Sunday, 2021. Born in 1965, Stephen was the chosen son of Peter and Mary Barkway. He lived in the Cornwall area for most of his life. Predeceased by his younger brother David on 9/11, 2001, Stephen is survived by his parents, his children Peter James (Cornwall), Rosanna (Cornwall) and Justin (Kingston) and 3 grandchildren. He leaves behind his cousins, his sister-in-law Cindy Barkway, aunts and an uncle and dozens of colleagues, especially his closest friends Keith Elliott and Bruce Girling. Stephen devoted his life to the service of fellow human beings, through such organizations as Katimavik, many years as a counsellor and support for recovering alcoholics at Friendship House and through the Anglican churches of the area. He was a licensed lay reader, obtained a degree in theology from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, and spent nearly a dozen years as the parish administrator at Trinity Church in Cornwall. The funeral liturgy to celebrate Stephen’s life will take place at Trinity Church, 105 Second Street West in Cornwall on Saturday, September 25th at 11 am. It will be necessary to register to attend this service, due to church regulations. There is currently a limit to the number of persons permitted within the church. Please contact Trinity Memorial Church, 105 Second St. West, Cornwall by phone at 613-933-3991, through email at trinityanglicancornwall@outlook.com or stop in at the Church office to register your place, if you would like to attend.
