New addictions/mental health support hub under construction Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Ground was broken Friday, kind of, on a new addiction and mental health centre in Cornwall. The new centre will bring seven existing Cornwall Community Hospital programs under one roof and is expected to be completed within a year. While organizers of a ground-breaking ceremony were forced to bring the event indoors to avoid the rain Friday, they were excited to announce a project that will incorporate everything from withdrawal management to crisis counselling into one facility. The $9.3-million project includes a new building on the former paramedic headquarters north of the hospital on McConnell Avenue. A fundraising campaign has already begun, with the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation providing $1.2 million towards the end goal. Of that money some $350,000 has already been committed, including a $250,000 pledge from the Cornwall Service Club Council. “We’re very pleased this project will bring all of our services under one roof,” said
hospital CEO Jeanette Despatie. “The needs are frightening.” Indeed, statistics provided at the event Friday show that 33 million Canadians are grappling with depression and as many as one quarter of all children who require mental health treatment are not able to receive it. “It reinforces for all of us the attention” this issue deserves, said Despatie. Marvin Plumadore, vice-president of the service club council, said this marks the first occasion where his group (which includes a myriad of local philanthropic agencies) will work towards a common goal. “It’s our first foray into working on something as a unit,” he said. “I believe we are the only service club council in Ontario...and you’d be hard-pressed to find one in the country that works for the community the way we do.” Organizers of a ground-breaking ceremony were forced to bring the event indoors to Bourgon Construction has been secured to avoid the rain Friday, they were excited to announce a project that will incorporate complete construction of the new facility, everything from withdrawal management to crisis counselling into one facility. The vaccine is safe and your best protection against the flu. It’s free and available for everyone aged six months and older.” Certain groups of people are at higher risk of complications from the flu, and are strongly encouraged to get immunized. These include: children six months to less than five years of age; people aged 65 and older; people with chronic medical conditions. If you live with or provide care to someone who falls under one of the groups listed above, it is also highly recommended that you get immunized. This simple step could help protect you and those around you. The EOHU reminds residents to bring a piece of identification to the immunization clinics. CITY COUNCIL: Dupelle fuming after Lauzon points finger at city on chem tanks CORNWALL, Ontario – Coun. Maurice Dupelle is fuming with comments made by MP Guy Lauzon during an election debate last week where the incumbent suggested city hall knew about controversial chemical tanks on our waterfront long before their reality became public. Dupelle wants city administrators to draft a report that explains when city council became aware of the plan for the tanks.
“Those dates don’t match with what I have. Now I have people telling me ‘Oh,. You did know,’” said Dupelle. “It’s unfair to the five of us who (were re-elected last year). “I’m speaking for myself as a councillor. Those statements should not be made public and make council look like we knew all about it. And I stand to that.” Lauzon, during a heated exchange with Liberal candidate Bernadette Clement, suggested last week the city knew about the arrival of the tanks nearly a year before their existence went public and suggested Clement,
as a city councillor, was ill-informed when municipal officials finally waded into the debate. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said he’s starting to hear some grumbling from within the community on the subject too. “I don’t think it was when council became aware, but when the city of Cornwall became aware,” said the mayor. “Coun. Dupelle has some legitimate concerns.” Coun. Andre Rivette was upset as well. “I think it’s important we get the truth out there,” said Rivette. “There’s information that
he (Lauzon) has that we don’t have. If we knew about it, who knew about it? It wasn’t council. He keeps saying it’s us. But his ‘us’ is different.” Coun. Elaine MacDonald suggested some “pretty bizarre” comments were made by Lauzon.] “I was in the room when some pretty wild statements that were made…during the heat of the moment during an election campaign,” she said.

ROUTE CHANGE: Santa Claus parade to finish at complex this year Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Santa Claus will be making a different trek through Cornwall this year. But some downtown merchants aren’t pleased. Organizers of the annual Santa Claus parade are expected to officially announce in the coming days that the man in red will end his pilgrimage at the Cornwall Civic Complex instead of the Royal Canadian Legion as has happened in previous years. The parade will still start at St. Lawrence High School and travel west on Second Street,
but will veer to the south at Marlborough Street and link up with Water Street before ending at the complex. Terry Muir, chair of the event, said in an interview the reason is the parade has outgrown its home at the legion. “Parking was a major issues,” he said. “And people weren’t coming in after the parade.” But changing the parade route has left some downtown merchants upset. “This is a slap in the face,” said Andre Pommier, owner of Pommier Jewellers at the corner of Pitt and Second streets. “We do a lot on the corner.” The longtime businessman recently built Pommier Court at the corner, which has been a
place where hot chocolate and other goodies are handed out during the parade. “We do all kinds of things for the kids,” he said. “This is really going against tradition. It’s always been on Second Street.” Pommier suggested the move is “unacceptable” and wants to lobby for the parade route to perhaps include a turn at Pitt Street so that more of the downtown can be incorporated. This year the parade awards will be handed out in the salons at the complex and the public is invited to attend. The parade is still slated to begin at 5 p.m., Nov. 21 from St. Lawrence High School. More information on the parade can be found at cornwallsantaclausparade.com.

CITY COUNCIL: Still no decision on fluoridation of Cornwall water CORNWALL, Ontario – The political football that is the fluoridation of Cornwall’s water supply is getting booted down the field again. Cornwall city council voted Monday night to wait until proponents and critics of the practice make presentations at city hall in the near future to outline the benefits and drawbacks. Cornwall’s water has been without fluoride for two years after a faulty valve at the water
treatment plant forced officials to stop adding hydrofluorosilicic acid to the system. In that time councillors have been back and forth over the issue several times. “It remains status quo. There will be nothing done,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “The equipment required has not been installed – I don’t think it’s been purchased either.” It would cost the city about $300,000 to install the equipment and $50,000 annually going forward. Council has at least four options, including
the potential for a referendum, to address the issue of fluoridating the Cornwall water supply. While a referendum may be palatable to some, if it is planned prior to the next municipal election the cost balloons to $150,000, instead of the cheaper $10,000 option for voting day. Councillors would also have to wade into the phrasing of a question. With new faces around the council table, it is likely a new round of presentations will be made to council on the subject. “You have new councillors around this table
who don’t have the health board’s portion of it,” said Coun. Andre Rivette, a member of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit board. “We have to hear from the health department. “If you don’t give them the courtesy of making a presentation to the new councillors, you’re doing a disservice.” The workers at the water treatment plant are also requesting time to make a presentation to council on the issue, presumably against the practice from a health and safety prespective.

Potters unite for Alzheimer Society at Marlin Orchards work, which goes to a silent auction table.” This year’s Country Harvest Pottery & Art Show Sale, a local ceramic celebration for nearly three decades, will support the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall & District. All funds from the silent auction will go directly to the Alzheimer Society to help provide family support, peer support groups, adult day away programs, education sessions, First Link, and support to research. “What is so nice is that, the artists and the community have always been very supportive and generous to the charities chosen over the years,” said Marlin.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The art of ceramics is celebrated at a popular event that benefits people with Alzheimer’s. The annual Country Harvest Pottery & Art Show Sale at Marlin Orchards and Garden Centre showcased the talent of 22 potters over Thanksgiving weekend. “It’s important this tradition continues to keep people aware of what can be created from the hands of a potter, starting with a lump of clay,” said event organizer Ann Marlin, who has
been a potter for over 35 years. “This is an ancient art and is worthwhile keeping alive in Cornwall.” There was plenty of shopping, as potters gave live demonstrations in a spacious greenhouse, with items like sturdy kitchenware, elegant sculptures, unique jewelry, and art pieces. In addition, for the second year, local creative force Jacqueline Milner displayed her paintings. “A very important part of the show has always been fundraising for the various local charities in the Cornwall area,” said Marlin. “Each participant has always donated a piece of their

Too much, too soon lands exerciser in hospital Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - If you’re starting a new exercise regimen a Cornwall woman has a warning for you: relax and drink water, or you could end up in the hospital. You might even die. Wendy Currier, 34, was admitted to the Cornwall Community Hospital nearly 10 days ago and has barely left her room after suffering the onset of rhabdomyolysis - a rare but serious health condition that sees muscle fibers break down to the point of entering the bloodstream. Kidneys can shut down as a consequence and in rare cases death can occur. Currier was suffering excruciating pain following her first-ever spinning class and after two days was urged by her doctor to visit the emergency room at the hospital. Before long she was admitted and has been on a regimen of saline and other intravenous fluids to flush her system and keep her
kidneys safe. “People don’t know that something can happen to them,” said Currier from her sixth-floor hospital room - the intravenous pump chugging in the background. “It’s really serious - you could end up with something really dangerous.” Her odyssey began Sept. 26 at a spinning class offered by Erica’s Spin Studio in Cornwall. Currier, new to the exercise program that includes intense cycling on a stationary bike, pushed her way through it. “We were told to go at our own pace,” Currier said, but admits she probably should have hydrated a little more before the class. “I did a little bit of a warmup. “It was really hard.” Currier felt sore after the workout, and winded, but chalked that up to enduring her first class ever. But by Sept. 29 she could no longer handle the pain screaming in her legs. “It was so bad I couldn’t even step up on a curb,” she said.
Doctors have told Currier her kidneys appear to be fine, but she’s not taking any chances. “I just want to provide awareness for everyone,” she said. Erica Bryan, the owner of the spin studio where Currier trained, said her clients sign a waiver before taking part in classes, advising them that the exercise is high impact. Bryan said like other exercise regimens, spinning takes some getting used to. “If you went to a Crossfit clinic...you wouldn’t be able to what those other people are doing. But after three or four classes you could see how they do things,” she said. She said her spinning clients can choose to drink water during the exercise - some do, and some don’t. “It’s your choice if you drink or not,” said Bryan. Currier spent the Thanksgiving weekend in the hospital and as of press time was still admitted.

Carve into Pumpkin Fest for Hospice Cornwall Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The spirit of Halloween will be in full swing at Cornwall Square during the annual Pumpkin Fest on Friday, October 23. Hospice Cornwall is holding a pumpkin carving competition between noon and 1:15 p.m., inviting local residents, businesses, and organizations to get spooky for charity.
“Come out and join us for a fun event,” said Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall. “Carvers can also help by having friends and family come out to vote for their creation.” Since the centre only receives partial government funding, every year about $500,000 has to be raised to meet its operational budget. Pumpkins will be sold for $20 after the event to help support the 10-bed end-of-life care
facility. Last year, Pumpkin Fest 2014 raised $3,080. The carver of the winning masterpiece will receive a $100 mall gift card. “Cornwall Square is such a great host,” added Collette. For more information about the event, contact Sandy Collette at (613) 932-3451 or email scollette@carefor.ca. More about Pumpkin Fest
- All participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges - Points will be awarded for creativity, amount of money raised, and costume - Each carver will have 45 minutes to create their jack-o-lantern - Participants are asked to bring carving equipment. CORNWALL, Ontario - The countdown is underway for the annual United Way Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings event at the Nav Centre on Saturday, November 21. “It’s an all-around wonderful evening - last year, the room, wine, food, and music were so spectacular people were left in awe,” said Lori Greer, executive director of United Way of SDG. “It also supports us in a huge way. We’re really happy to have a signature event.” Organizers have pledged $20,000 to the local charitable organization, with an additional $5,000 being matched by Scotiabank Cornwall. In 2014, the event raised $39,000. “We are proud to be organizing this event in support of United Way/Centraide SD&G again this year,” said Pat Clarke, honourary chair of the United Way Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings volunteer event committee. “This time, we’re really hoping to raise $50,000.” The swanky affair will sport a new look
compared to its two previous editions, and feature live jazz music, fine cuisine and gourmet dessert stations, martini bar, live and silent auction (hockey tickets for Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens), and the list goes on. Nav Centre’s Luc McCabe (a main judge at Upper Canada Village’s annual Food Lovers’ Field Days Iron Pan competition and season two contestant of Chopped Canada) will be catering the event. The third annual Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., followed by DJ music and dancing until midnight. The United Way of SDG is governed by a local board of directors, who, with UW staff and volunteers are helping to raise funds towards its 2015 campaign goal of $710,000 to assist its 17 non-profit agencies (offering 18 programs) throughout Cornwall and the United Counties. “We are delighted to have the support of Stradwicks Flooring & More, Scotiabank, C.M.G Innovation General Contractors and many more who help to make this event a tremendous success,” said Angie Baker, event chair. “The hard work of the dedicated volunteer organizing committee,

New parks and rec manager appointed by city Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The city announced this week that James Fawthrop has been appointed the new division manager of parks and recreation. A native of Cornwall, Fawthrop has extensive experience in the municipal sector, having served for 10 years as a municipal engineer with Thompson
Rosemount Group/Genivar before joining the City of Cornwall in 2011 as design and construction engineer. In this position, Fawthrop has been tasked with supervising employees and overseeing municipal projects in a variety of ways, from budgeting and planning to actual implementation. “Jamie’s education, experience and communication skills make him an ideal candidate for this key
position,” said Mark Boileau, general manager of planning, development and recreation. In addition to his work experience, Fawthrop also has a long record of community involvement. He is presently a volunteer director on the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation board and he also devotes time to serve as a volunteer coach for minor hockey and lacrosse. Fawthrop and his wife Kate have two children,
Dean and Carolyn. “I am excited about this new opportunity and I’m looking forward to joining a great team at parks and recreation and building on the solid foundation that is already in place,” said Fawthrop. Fawthrop is expected to make the transition to the new position in the coming weeks and the process to fill his current position will begin immediately.

Clement, Lauzon point fingers over who’s to blame for chem tanks
Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Finger-pointing and some heated words dominated a fiery exchange over controversial chemical tanks on Cornwall’s waterfront at a federal election debate last Wednesday. Both Liberal candidate Bernadette Clement and incumbent Tory Guy Lauzon locked horns, with both suggesting the other was to blame on that file. “One of the most disappointing files for our

the (Stephen) Harper government,” he said. “The secrecy was so much that Mr. Lauzon didn’t know this would happen – which is not the sign of a good government. “This kind of thing has to go.” Green party candidate Elaine Kennedy suggested communication was sorely lacking on the issue. “One of the things we have to realize is when you communicate you have to communicate between departments…it seems (federal) departments don’t talk to each other and they don’t talk to the MPs about issues in their particular riding,” she said. “We need to find what is best on an issue and then work on it.”

specifically at Clement. “Some councillors made the decision about this issue without knowing how tall the tanks were. If I was a resident of Cornwall I would be upset with a councillor who didn’t know.” Clement, though, held her ground. “This is not a council issue, this is a federal government issue,” she said to applause from many of the 160 who attended the event at the Cornwall Civic Complex. “This is a failure on the part of this government.” Patrick Burger, who is carrying the NDP banner heading into the Oct. 19 vote, suggested Lauzon and the Tories failed the Cornwall area. “This goes into the culture of secrecy with

area was the arrival of those tanks,” said Clement. “The MP should be aware of those hopes and dreams for our waterfront. They should say ‘I want to be informed ahead of time on those projects.’” But Lauzon was having none of it, suggesting the city knew about the arrival of the tanks nearly a year before their existence went public and suggested Clement, as a city councillor, was ill-informed when municipal officials finally waded into the debate. “Twice we offered the whole harbour to the city, twice,” he thundered, pointing a finger

Around here, we have only two seasons Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com According to traditional geography text books there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. My 75 years of travel have taught me otherwise. For example, I’ve visited San Diego, California in April, July, October and February. Guess what! The temperature was just about the same during every stay. San Diego has only one season: summer. I’ve lived in Eastern Ontario since 1975. Those 40 years have taught me that this area of Canada has only two seasons: summer and win-
new kind of travail begins, for the advent of Eastern Ontario’s other season is upon them. They have to spend their time preparing for the onslaught of winter’s six months by finding an affordable storage place for their Sea-Doos, deciding whether or not their leaky camping tents should be chucked out for next week’s garbage and replaced by a 54-foot motor home, and tearing up the lawn by doing test runs with their snowblowers. Only when those tasks are completed will they be ready for those 183 days of Eastern Ontario’s other season, winter. “What about spring?” you ask. Some time between March 20 and June 21, in a period that
ter; nothing else. Let me explain. From about March 20 every year, the locals live in some sort of seasonal limbo, anticipating the arrival of summer, which supposedly takes place on or about June 21. During the days and nights before June 21, the Morrisburgers, the Cornish, the Alexandrians and the Moncklandites spend their time preparing for summer getting their Sea-Doos tuned up, repairing the leaky seams of their camping tents and doing test runs with their lawn mowers. When the 15 or so days of summer come, they’re ready for all the work and fun that are part of summer. Then, about Labour Day, all fun stops and a
lasts no more than a week, we go from complaining that it’s too cold to belly-aching that it’s too hot. That seven-day period cannot be called a season. Since our winters last for about 183 days, there aren’t enough days for the other season, the one that the text books call ‘autumn’. Oops! I forgot to subtract the three days of our socalled ‘January Thaw’, which faithfully takes place in December, February or March - or in January, but only in leap years. Are you ready for winter? I’m not, because I can’t remember if my snowblower takes straight gas or a gas-oil mix. During its test run last week, it sure pumped out a lot of smoke!

University programming unveiled for Cornwall’s Nav Can campus Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - An agreement between Carleton University and Nav Canada became official Tuesday that could see a variety of pioneering aerospace programs unveiled in Cornwall. Officials from Carleton, as well as Nav Canada and a steering committee that was created to examine the feasibility of creating a university campus in the Seaway City met Tuesday to celebrate the news. The undertaking will see a “Centre of Excellence” in aerospace engineering created in Cornwall at the sprawling Nav Canada facility on Montreal Road. Potential programs will include professional certification courses in the areas of pilot training, air traffic management and airport management. It is expected that additional
programs will be offered in the near future, all of which could draw dozens or perhaps hundreds of students to the Seaway City. “One of Carleton’s central goals is to work with neighbouring communities,” said Carleton President Roseann O’Reilly Runte. “This entrepreneurial initiative brings together the knowledge and skills of those working at Nav Canada and Carleton University in support of economic development. “Together we will foster regional and international growth through education.” Next steps include refining terms of reference, outlining the scope of work and creating a business model, with a target of having a small selection of courses operating in the fall of 2016. “Nav Canada, and specifically the Nav Centre, are well positioned to help bring this initiative to fruition,” said Neil Wilson, Nav
Canada executive vice-president of administration and general counsel. “Our Cornwall facilities are ideal for a specialized campus, with its comprehensive learning spaces as well as student accommodations, while our organization’s expertise in air traffic management will support related course delivery and provide access to leading industry technologies and simulation training.” The aerospace endeavour is just one area of co-operation between Carleton and Cornwallbased organizations. A committee comprised of representatives from Cornwall, Carleton, Akwesasne Mohawk Territory and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry has been working since 2014 on ways to deliver niche post-secondary programs in Cornwall that build on its economic and cultural profile. Working with the Ontario government, the committee is focused on

developing a collaborative degree program in environmental science, management and stewardship, forging initiatives in First Nations governance and capacity building and strengthening pathways for students between Carleton and St. Lawrence College. City council this year approved a request to fund more work to study the feasibility of creating such programming at the Nav Centre, to the tune of $50,000. The committee also sought funding from the United Counties and private donors. The Eastern Ontario Training Board, for example, was the first agency to sign on, providing $7,500. Gail Kaneb, a member of the steering committee, was “thrilled” with Tuesday’s announcement. “Carleton is behind us,” she said. “It’s been such a co-operative relationship.”
Long-time businessman passes away CORNWALL, Ontario - A long-time Cornwall businessman who was once Big Brother of the Year and the author of what family members say were the best hugs in the world has passed away. Richard Bray, who co-owned Boulerice Funeral Home with his wife Adele, passed away Sunday following a short battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 66. His daughter Chantal Desnoyers said Bray was an active member of the community who joined community-based organizations including Big Brothers and the Knights of Columbus, but his real gift was helping people and loving his family. “There was a family that was having a hard time at Christmas and my dad played Santa Claus for them,” she recalled. “They went and bought Christmas gifts for them because they knew they were having trouble. “(The family) came to visit us (following Bray’s passing) and they told us that he really helped them out.” Bray was named Big Brother of the Year in Cornwall in the mid-1980s and rekindled a relationship with his little, Monte Yancey, that lasted until the day he passed away. “They had lost contact for a few years,” said Chantal, adding Yancey had aged out of the program. “But they bumped into each other a couple of years ago. “He was by my dad’s side until his last breath.” As well, Bray was extremely fond of his five grandchildren Caroline, Nicolaas and Lucas Bray and Gabrielle and Jérémie Desnoyers. “He lived for his grandkids,” said Desnoyers. “He would do anything for them. “My nephew Nicolaas said we would miss his hugs. He had the best hugs in the world.” Bray is also survived by his son Marc, son-in-law Paul and daughter-in-law Julie. He was predeceased by his parents René and Aurore (Brunet) Bray. Bray is resting at Boulerice Funeral Home Ltd., 218 Montreal Road on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at Precious Blood Church in Glen Water Ontario at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow in Notre-Dame Cemetery in Cornwall.

CORNWALL, Ontario - If October 31st is too long of a wait - get an early start to Halloween by dressing up as your favourite superhero (or supervillain) as the Cornwall Colts shoot for their third straight victory on home ice. Cornwall & Area Pop Event organizers Randy Sauve and Carol Grant are adding a twist to the Jr. A squad’s upcoming match against the Hawkesbury Hawks at the Ed Lumley Arena on Thursday, October 15. Fans are encouraged to wear the costume of their favourite comic, sci-fi or TV personality. CAPE and the Colts will award prizes for best costume, including free tickets. “We had a ‘jersey night’ a few weeks ago, it was great to see the community involved and the young fans. It kinda puts a smile on our face,” said Cornwall Colt left wing Grant Cooper. The three-year veteran says the CCHL team (6-5-2) found their “scoring touch” over the last few matches. “Anything we can do to put more people in the seats and make it fun, while drawing attention to CAPE,” said Sauve, owner of Fantasy Realm - Cornwall’s official geek sanctuary since it opened in 1985. Discounted Colts tickets are available this week leading up to Thursday for only $7 each (compared to $12.50) at the Pitt Street comic book store. Sauve and his fiance, Carol Grant, photographer, are the masterminds behind CAPE. The first edition of the ComicCon-style event drew thousands to the Seaway City this April. The local lovebirds will be tying the knot at the second annual CAPE taking place at the Benson Centre on April 23-24, 2016. “It’s going to be epic,” said Grant. CAPE’s guestlist is already piling up, too. The list includes, Clerks cast members: Brian O’Halloran, Scott Schiaffo, and Marilyn Ghigliotti; The Walking Dead zombies: Jeremy Ambler, Chris Harelson, and Coleman Youmans; Dan Parent, American comic book artist and writer best known for his work for Archie Comics; Geof Isherwood, comic book artist best known for his work for Marvel, DC, Broadway, and Heroes Of The North; and The Estrada sisters, cosplayers from Montreal, Que. Sauve and Grant were so excited about the next announcement, another cast member of AMC’s The Walking Dead, they told Seaway News before anyone else...(drum roll, please). Steve Coulter, the American actor who brought Reg Monroe to the screen in TWD’s Season 5. “There’s plenty more exciting announcements to come,” said Sauve. For more information about tickets, contact Fantasy Realm (227 Pitt Street) at (613) 933-7997.
OPINION
Election race appears to be tightening as we enter the homestretch Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
With Thanksgiving neatly tucked behind us the only turkeys we’ll be focusing on in the days ahead are those running in the Oct. 19 election (he said with tongue firmly planted in cheek). And with all due respect to my pal Claude McIntosh who said last week in this newspaper incumbent Guy Lauzon could win this riding while on “cruise control” I think the race for MP is tightening up...even if just a little. “Super Guy” as Mac likes to call him, is feeling the heat from Liberal candidate Bernadette Clement. Now…let’s be clear: Lauzon, by all accounts, is still the favourite given his track record in previous elections and popularity among rank and file Tories. But Clement, who smartly began her campaign in the United Counties and continues to run out there every chance she gets has thrown her all into this race and it is showing. At last week’s Cornwall debate there was little doubt that an anti-Conservative feeling bubbled away. Lauzon was the only candidate openly booed on occasion (you people are terrible) and the subject of several derisive laughs. Clement, if you were scoring the debate at home, left the event with a TKO.
But she will need that, coupled with every card-carrying Liberal in Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry to vote in her favour, while at the same time convincing a slew of Tories, New Democrats and Greens to hold their nose and vote red. I’m not saying it’s going to happen…but stranger things have occurred when an angry electorate heads to the polls (see last year’s municipal election in Cornwall for proof ). There’s also an anti-Conservative sentiment flowing in places like Facebook and Twitter – not to mention the blogosphere. If that vehemence results in an anti-Tory wave, could it be enough to send Clement to Ottawa and Lauzon into retirement? That might be stretching it - but Clement has learned a lot since 2011...and it shows. The race in SD and SG has turned into a two-horse sprint for the finish line. I have nothing but respect for someone brave enough to run for office, but Patrick Burger is not going to win this election. Neither is Elaine Kennedy. New Democrat and Green supporters in SD and SG have to know this. As time goes by national polling data continues to show the NDP sinking, while the Tories and Grits slug it out for first place. Will enough New Democrats switch their vote to Liberal in hopes of at least gaining something by slaying the mighty Stephen Harper machine instead of wasting their
ballot on a party that seems destined for another third-place finish, or worse? Maybe…and maybe not. But that’s the best thing about the homestretch of this election. What once appeared like another easy win for Lauzon is becoming more difficult for the incumbent. I think it is fair to say that Clement has willed herself into this race and that, in additiont to the anger expressed by Tory-haters, could make things more interesting Oct. 19. I’ve covered elections, both local and beyond, where the result was never in doubt from the time campaigns began until the last vote was counted. Those elections are boring and I got that vibe back in August (has it been that long?) when the writ was dropped…but I don’t any longer. The election in SD and SG is tightening up, even if only a little bit.
Now, we all know polls often aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. Everyone and their dog, it seemed, had the provincial Liberals getting hammered in the last election…all they did was turn that into a majority government. So those who think the Conservatives are in danger of imminent defeat need to give their head a shake…not unlike a wounded bear they may be hurting, but the Tories are anything but dead. Regardless of the polls, Facebook and Twitter, it would not surprise me at all to see the Conservatives win another election – it just won’t be easy. With this rant nearly only one thing is clear – you might think I’m right, or very wrong. The only way to prove either point of view will be to exercise your vote Oct. 19. If you take anything away from this it is just that…vote.
Editor: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal is a bad deal negotiated in secret without any public input. The TPP will cost the Canadian auto sector the loss of 20,000 good-paying jobs and shrink the supply management system for Canadian dairy and poultry farmers and
jeopardize the future of thousands of dairy and poultry farmers and their families. It will give more foreign corporations the right to dictate Canadian policy, lead to higher costs for prescription drugs for Canadians, and threaten internet freedom. What other surprises will we learn when the
Canadians deserve a better deal. The NDP is full details of the TPP trade deal are released in a month, two weeks after the October 19th fed- fighting to protect good-paying Canadian jobs eral election? How convenient for the Harper and industries and our family farms and Conservatives and the Trudeau Liberals who communities. support the TPP. The NDP will not be bound by Brian Lynch the Harper Government’s secret, flawed TPP Cornwall trade deal.

Not even local Liberal heavyweights Lionel Chevrier and Ed Lumley managed the huge numbers Lauzon has put on the scoreboard. TRIVIA In the 1971 Cornwall municipal election this referendum made a major change in the way municipal elections are carried out. TRIVIA ANSWER Retired Cornwall Electric boss Michael Pescod had no trouble with this one. Sun Life Assurance of Montreal took over the city’s transit system on Jan. 27, 1899 and operated it for more than 70 years. Sun Life owned and operated the transit and power systems under the name Cornwall Street Railway Light and Power Co. The city took over the transit system in 1974 and named it Cornwall Transit. Cornwall Electric was purchased by the city in 1977. The original Cornwall Street Railway Co. started out using horse-drawn cabs. The first tracks for an electric system were laid in 1869. Soon after, three street cars were hauling passengers at five cents a pop. Workers could buy six tickets for a quarter and children’s tickets were 10 for a quarter. The company got into financial trouble and Sun Life took over. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Frequent contributor Dave McCleary passes along these nuggets “When I was your age we had to walk to the TV to change the channel.”/ “My kids will never know the joy of finding a quarter in the coin return.”/”I’m so thankful I had a childhood before technology.” ...Cartoon characters that Baby Boomers grew up watching at the Palace Theatre on Saturday mornings are showing their age (too). Mickey and Minnie Mouse, 87; Goofy, 83; Donald Duck, 81; Porky Pig, 80; Daffy Duck, 78; Tom and Jerry, 75; Tweety and Sylvester, 73; Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote,

Just in case you were wondering, the No. 1 song on this date in 1962 was Sherry by the Four Seasons. ... It was also the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis, when we all thought the world was about to end in nuclear destruction. Now that is stress. No surprise that church attendance shot up during the crisis. ... The power boat races at St. Lawrence Park, which attracted as many as 13,000 people. And the wacky but entertaining bathtub derby races on Cornwall Canal watched by thousands. SPORTS STUFF Don Cherry believes major league baseball is plotting to keep the Toronto Blue Jays out of the World Series because, according to Grapes, “they” don’t want a Canadian team winning the Series. Hey, didn’t we do it twice in the 1990s? And who are “they”? ... Bob McCown, Toronto’s most listened to/viewed sports talk show host, says the Leafs won’t make the playoffs. In fact, he thinks they are worse than last year’s underachievers. What makes this interesting is that McCown is employed by the same people who own the Leafs. ... Brock Frost says that when he owned the River Kings, salaries ranged from $200 to $900 (for one star player) a game. That would put the payroll at around $10,000 a game, just for players. Meanwhile, down the hall the Colts players pay to play. ... ChathamKent city council decided against spending millions to build an arena capable of attracting an Ontario Hockey League team. ... the riding returning to the Liberal fold after it was taken away from them in the last two elections. Liberal Don Boudria once owned the riding. Cornwall native Royal Galipeau is fighting for his political life in Orleans. Galipeau has held the riding since 2006 and was the first Conservative to win back-to-back elections in the riding’s 136-year history. He is up against retired army general Andrew Leslie. The site shows Leslie, hand-picked by the leader, capturing 52.1% of the vote. This time around it will take 170 seats to form a majority government. With the real threat of an NDP/Liberal coalition seizing power from a Conservative minority, Harper pretty much has to win a majority to stay in power. Baring a last-minute miracle, Harper will resign on election night, while the guillotine will be hanging over Thomas Mulcair’s head. And this could be Lauzon’s last election campaign. At least as a candidate. This is his sixth federal election campaign. It all started in 2000 when he ran as a Canadian Alliance candidate and finished second to Liberal Bob Kilger. The difference was 2,962. The Progressive Conservative candidate collected 3,635 votes. The right-wing split helped the Liberals. A case could be made that a united right would have defeated Kilger in 2000. The marriage of the Canadian Alliance and PCs under the Conservative banner set the stage for Kilger’s defeat in 2004, when Lauzon defeated the veteran MP by 4,000 votes. The local Liberals never recovered. In 2006, 2008 and 2011 his margin of victory grew. And now the polls suggest he will add another landslide victory.

Claude McIntosh It is one of those good news/bad news deals for Guy Lauzon that comes as this ridiculously long federal election takes its last gasps. A national poll tracking site has the veteran Conservative MP winning Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry by a comfortable margin over Liberal challenger Bernadette Clement. According to the Threehundredeight.com website, Lauzon will capture 53.8% of votes cast in his constituency, down slightly from two weeks ago. It represents a 10% drop from his 2011 landslide victory over Clement, who barely edged out the NDP candidate, but it is still in landslide territory. This time around, the site’s forecast has Clement far in front of the NDP candidate, Patrick Burger, perhaps because of strategic voting and a better organized campaign. If that scenario unfolds, the local Liberals should not be too far down in the dumps. It would signal the party is on the rebound in the riding after terrible finishes in the last three federal elections. As for Clement, assuming the polling is right, one would have to think that she has an IOU to cash in with a Liberal government. The bad news for Lauzon is that the same poll tracking site has the Liberals forming a minority government with 134 seats and the Conservatives dropping to 119 seats, with big losses in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. The poll has the NDP taking a big hit with just 80 seats, a decline of 23. The site has the party dropping 17 seats in Quebec. No doubt Thomas M’s support of the right to wear a face covering hurt. Next door in Leeds-Grenville, a decades old Conservative stronghold, the Tories hold a big lead. But in Prescott-Russell-North Glengarry, the site has

The Ontario government does a pisspoor job of helping kids with special needs.” And while the couple could talk about the negatives of raising a special needs child until the cows come home, they be;ieve the positives far outweigh any argument about what could have been. “There’s a lot of people - neat and interesting people - we never would have met and friends we would have never met,” said Stacey. “I could have stayed home and been a stay-athome parent for Wyatt, but I felt that if I did that I wouldn’t be helping him. He gets much more social interaction with the kids at daycare, and they are teaching him things that we wouldn’t be able to teach him, and he’s teaching them things.
“They just see him as another kid to play with. When I brought him back to daycare they said: ‘Oh Wyatt is back’, not ‘The kid in the wheelchair is back.’” Josh said the CP community is as tightlyknit as one will find: “We’ve learned there’s a whole community out there who has kids with CP of varying degrees. They’re all very supportive of each other when you need advice...or just to talk to each other.” And they know their son is aware of his surroundings, and how important he is to his parents. “One of the big things we were told is that most children with CP are extremely smart, but they’re trapped in their own body,” said Stacey. “He knows what’s going on, he just can’t express it.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s not easy being green, but Josh and Stacey Fraser wouldn’t have it any other way. The couple, and their son Wyatt, were wearing green last Wednesday to mark World Cerebral Palsy Day. Wyatt, 2, was diagnosed with CP shortly after birth. Doctors knew, almost immediately, that there were challenges ahead for the couple and their son. “There was a lack of oxygen to his brain which was caused by a placental hemorrhage,” said Stacey. “At four months we started seeing signs of it. But we were pretty much red-flagged already because we knew something would happen. We knew he wasn’t walking away scot-free.” Indeed, Wyatt faces a myriad of health issues. He regularly endures seizures, will be bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, has vision issues, impaired motor functions and requires a feeding tube to receive nourishment. “As he’s growing, we’re facing more challenges,” said Stacey. “He’s getting bigger, which makes it harder to move him around into cars and different places. “Also, shopping alone is a challenge. You have cart, and then also push around a wheelchair as well.” But all of this is not to suggest the Frasers are complaining...not at all. They love their son - that much is clear - and while this is not the parental journey they had in mind when Stacey became pregnant, their devotion to Wyatt is paramount. Not unlike any other family. “I think it’s just as rewarding, it’s just different,” said Josh. “We do what he needs and we figure out how to work around it. It really does change your perspective on life…for the good. “It really changes what you kind of think as
being important in your life. We had a chance to move far, far away (for work) but we turned it down because it wasn’t the right thing for Wyatt. Everything we do now, we do it for him.” The couple, like any other parent, celebrates milestones that Wyatt achieves...though with a different definition than most. “We call them ‘inchstones’,” Josh said with a laugh. Those ‘inchstones’ include the first time Wyatt smiled, or laughed, or managed to put his hand in his mouth. “That wasn’t a big thing for a normal parent, but for us it was huge,” said Stacey, with her husband readily agreeing. “When he finally figures out how to do something…it’s pretty cool,” said Josh. CP is caused by a brain injury or problem that occurs during pregnancy or birth or within the first three years of a child’s life. It can be caused by premature birth or not getting enough blood, oxygen, or other nutrients before or during birth. The disorder impairs control of movement due to damage to the developing brain which does not continue to worsen throughout life. The problems the Frasers now face are mostly centred on educating others about their son’s condition, and lobbying government-types for more funding to help families that include someone with CP. “I’ve noticed that, since I work in the school system, there’s all this awareness for Down syndrome and autism, but I’ve noticed there’s not much on CP awareness,” said Stacey. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of children and adults in North America manifest one or more of the symptoms of cerebral palsy. Currently, about 8,000 babies and infants are diagnosed with the condition each year. In addition, some 1,200 - 1,500 preschool age children are recognized each year to have cerebral palsy. “It’s the number one physical disability for children in the world,” said Josh. “There’s not a

5 Ways to Enjoy Apple Season (NC) Summer is over and fall is officially here, but that doesn’t mean that we have to start hibernating just yet. It’s apple season, and with it comes many different activities that will get you off the couch and enjoying what this time of year has to offer. 1. Apple Picking – yes, there are an abundance of apples in the grocery store at this time of year, but there’s something about picking them yourself that make sinking your teeth into one just that much more delicious. With many orchards also having additional activities such as wagon rides and corn mazes, there is

Dig into Fall Flavours (NC) Embrace the earth’s natural rhythms and stock up on in-season vegetables. It’s a win-win – seasonal produce is supplied in high quantities, which lowers the market price and saves you money. Zucchini, bell peppers, carrots and sweet potatoes are just some of the delicious foods that are best in the fall. Slice them, dice them and pair them with your favourite pasta dishes. For something different, skip the meat and try this Barilla Veggie Penne – it’s packed with flavour.
Barilla Vegetable Penne Serves 8 enough to fill an entire day with apple fun. 2. Apple Cooking – whether you eat it cut up in slices or off the core whole, the is no question that a raw, crisp apple is a tasty snack, but there are also so many recipes out there that incorporate the fruit into a full meal. Apple poutine is one savoury example of how you can dine for dinner with apples. For a great recipe head to molsoncanadian.ca/cider. 3. Apple Cider – hard cider is increasing in popularity in North America. With it’s crisp, refreshing taste it is the perfect partner for a fall day. Try Molson Canadian Cider, it is made with 100% Canadian Apples letting you truly enjoy what this land has to offer. 4. Take a walk – as the leaves change from green to red, there is no question the outdoors is a beautiful place at this time of year. Take a stroll and take advantage of the weather before winter moves in. Don’t forget to pack an apple for a mid-hike snack! www.newscanada.com

Niqab controversy in the limelight again Opinion Column - Sultan Jessa My simple answer is no one should be allowed to cover his or her head during Canadian citizenship oath ceremony. There are no two ways about it. I established a new home in Canada more than four decades ago. The day I become a Canadian has been the highlight of my new beginning in this country. A Muslim woman is insisting she should be allowed to take the oath wearing a niqab. A niqab covers the entire face with the exception of eyes. I do not approve the stand the Liberals and the New Democratic Party is taking on this issue. Sure this woman can wear her niqab any other time. But, for a few minutes it takes her to swear allegiance to Canada, she should remove her niqab
during the public ceremony. Citizenship brings with it the responsibility to clearly identify oneself when taking the oath. The federal Court of Appeal has decided wearing of niqabs during citizenship ceremony is alright. I don’t see anything wrong in this issue ending up at the Supreme Court. This is the right and the appropriate thing to do. Some people will not agree with me. But, I have no problems with that. The federal government is appealing the ruling to the Supreme Court. “At that one very public moment of a public declaration of one’s loyalty to one’s fellow citizens and country, one should do so openly, proudly without one’s face hidden,” said Jason Kenney, who imple-
mented the rule. I am with Kenney on this particular issue. Few Muslim women, mainly in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, wear niqabs for cultural reasons. But, Islam’s holy book, the Quran does not explicitly say women have to cover their faces in such a manner. Zunera Ishaq, a 30 year-old Toronto woman and the mother of three, is asking to be sworn in as a Canadian citizen as soon as possible. Her demand is unreasonable and does not fall into the category of “reasonable accommodation” norm being followed in the country. Less than 100 niqab wearing women are affected by the policy. Ishaq, a Pakistani national, argues the

government policy regarding veils at citizenship oath ceremonies is a personal attack on her, her identity as a Muslim and her religious beliefs. Covering one’s face has absolutely nothing to do with religion. Wearing of a niqab has nothing to do with religion and is not mandatory in faith. Muslim scholars have debated this issue for years. These scholars agree reasons for wearing niqabs are personal. If this is allowed, how can you say no to a person wearing a full ski mask showing only the eyes? I am surprised people are confusing the niqab issue with wearing turbans and Indian head gear.

Road trip to Moosonee finished first in the league. During the play-offs, Cornwall lost the QSHL semi final to the Ottawa Commandos in six games with Fasano recording 5 points. Sammy Fasano would be named to the QSHL First AllStar team at seasons end. Promoted to Lieutenant during the series with Ottawa, he transferred to Ottawa’s Lansdowne Park training barracks. As fate would have it, Commandos right winger Jack McGill broke his hand against Toronto Spitfires and Ottawa picked Sammy Fasano to replace McGill. Fasano played one game in the Allan Cup final, Ottawa would go on to win beating Victoria Army. It was actually Sam’s second Allan Cup play-off. In 1940, he was a member of the Timmins Buffalo-Ankerite Bisons. Once settled in Moosonee, I ventured over to Moose Factory Island. The Cree First Nation is located there along with some pretty interesting Hudson’s Bay Co. history. Following the dusty trails, I ended up on Jonathan Cheechoo Road. You remember him, Moose Factory’s favourite native son who scored 56 goals and took home the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy in 2005-06 as a member of the San Jose Sharks. Long before it was called the Polar Bear Express, the only land route in and out of Moosonee was called the “ iron toboggan “ by the elders. During Jonathan’s memorable season, it became known as the “Chee - Choo” train. Imagine… son’s hockey pool was completed as the miles slid by, and I found some great WWII
Sammy Fasano. local hockey history—thanks to Charlene Fasano, and we all enjoyed our visit to the home town of a northern Ontario hockey legend—all this squeezed into a five-day journey. I’ll call that a hat trick or a four goal night, if you count stopping at all the Tim’s along the route for a medium with milk and a pack of hockey cards…still a kid at heart.

Load up the car with your wife, your son and the dog, head north nine hours to Cochrane, and a lifetime of memories become the topic “du jour.” You laugh, cry and argue, but most of all, wonder where the time went—as your son embarks upon a new chapter in his life—in Moosonee Ontario. When the early settlers headed north, they certainly didn’t make a phone call from their horse and buggy to their girlfriend in Moosonee to make sure she was logged onto the hockey pool draft. As the desolate miles between New Liskeard and Cochrane seemed never to end, pool picks were carefully selected and relayed north, then the successful “ding” indicating a confirmed pick could be heard. In the hour that passed there was a happy son, relieved girlfriend (she could return to her movie) and a hotel waiting for us up the roa Up early next day, a quick visit to Cochrane’s city mascot Chimo, the giant Polar Bear statue, then load the car onto the Polar Bear Express for the five hour rail journey to Moosonee. Funny, I looked for Tom Hanks, but it was after all 6 a.m.—he had three hours before the train departed. On the short walk back to the hotel, I spotted Mercier’s Mini Mart, the sign out front on the sidewalk pulled me inside—Coffee Is On. “Where are you hiding that coffee,” I say to Charlene, who smiled at my early-morning attempt at humour and guides me to the bank
of coffee urns. “So, are you a Cochrane girl,” I ask. “All my life,” she replies, followed by, “Where are you from?” I proudly reach for a Team Cornwall card, damn, I didn’t bring any, as I tell her I am from Cornwall in eastern Ontario. “Oh, Cornwall,” she says. “My father played hockey in Cornwall, years ago.” Sensing I might get away with it, “Must have been a very long time ago,” I chirp wryly. It registered in the grin Charlene returned and opened the door for some hockey talk. “Yes it was a long time ago, it was 1942-43, during the war. He was Corporal, stationed in Cornwall and played for the Army team,” Charlene recalled proudly. Salvatore “Sammy” Antonio Fasano sure did play here all those years ago in the very skilled Quebec Senior Hockey League during the uncertain times of WWII. Born in Cochrane, Ontario in 1915, Sammy played in Atlantic City EHL, Minneapolis AHA and Cleveland AHL, before arriving in Cornwall at the age of 28 during the war. He had scored 109 goals during those three years prior to joining the army. In Cornwall, Fasano played along side 10 NHL’ers including Frank Mario, Gerry Brown, Baz Bastien and player coach George “Punch” Imlach. In a game here on January 15, 1943, Sammy scored five goals and added two helpers in a 12 - 2 win over Montreal Royals at the community arena. Fasano recorded 42 points and the Cornwall’s

Marc-Olivier D’Amour scored two first-period goals for Riviere-du-Loup. Nicolas LarocqueMarcoux gave the Kings some life, beating Guillaume Decelles just 53 seconds into the second period to reduce the deficit to 2-1. After Tudel’s powerplay marker, which came just as a 5-on-3 powerplay had expired, PierreLuc Faubert brought the Kings to within a goal at 9:58 of the third. With a delayed penalty coming to the 3L, Faubert beat a sprawling Decelles. Sylvain Deschatelets’ empty-net goal with seven seconds to play in the game sealed it for the 3L. Pete Karvouniaris took the loss in goal for Cornwall despite a 40-save performance.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For diehard River Kings fans, it’s too early to say the team’s fourth LNAH season is on thin ice, despite Cornwall losing their first three games. The River Kings dropped a 4-2 contest to the visiting Riviere-du-Loup 3L in front of 934 fans on Saturday night at the Civic Complex in the team’s home opener. Francis Tudel pounced on a rebound for powerplay marker 1:24 into the third period for the eventual game-winning goal. Guillaume Decelles was solid in goal for the 3L, making 25 stops to earn the victory. He also had some help from his posts – the River Kings hit three of them in the first 30 minutes of the contest.

Later, newly acquired River Kings defenceman Frederick Cote took exception to a slash from Deschatelets and dropped the gloves with the 3L captain mid-way through the third. Riviere-du-Loup outshot Cornwall 44-27. D’Amour (first), Marc-Andre Tourigny (second), with three assists, and Karvouniaris were the announced stars. On Friday (October 9), Eric Bertrand had two

WOOL NEEDED: My family and our group of volunteers are preparing to deliver gifts, some home-made, for less fortunate families. We are asking for donations of leftover wool to make tuques and scarfs by the Chateau Cornwall Knitting Club. The Club then donates them to our family’s “Gift of Hope” charity organization for children in need at Christmas time. Please contact Carole at 613-362-2980 to arrange for wool pick-up. Thanks so much!
