Tribe announces new CFO Heather Henry
The ArriveCan App must be scrapped Eric Duncan
3 Minutes with the MP MP FOR STORMONT, DUNDAS & SOUTH GLENGARRY
It is time for the government to immediately scrap the disastrous ArriveCan smartphone app, and permanently remove all federal travel restrictions and mandates. Our local constituency office is usually busy at the best of times: passports, CRA, immigration and the Disability Tax Credit are common reasons for the hundreds of visits, calls, and emails we receive each week. Sadly however, our office is now receiving countless calls and emails from constituents who are having horrendous experiences with ArriveCan. Seniors who don’t have smartphones or are not comfortable with technology are overwhelmed with the process, and many are just wanting to cross the border for lunch in Massena or to visit the Casino after two years of restrictions. Local and national media are reporting the ridiculous stories of fully vaccinated Canadians with no symptoms being subjected to a two-week quarantine or risk fines of $5,000 because they don’t have a smartphone or there was a glitch in the app. Families have been told that they need to create new accounts each week to cross to go to church because of a glitch that doesn’t recognize that a child under 5 doesn’t need to be vaccinated. It is ridiculous, cruel and needs to stop.
ArriveCan is unfairly and unnecessarily punishing Canadians who simply want to get back to their normal lives. The tourism industry is finally hoping to see a recovery this summer travel season, but the federal government is standing in its way. By doubling down on ArriveCan and reintroducing random testing, the Liberal government is actively discouraging travel to Canada. Recently, a group of Canada-US border Mayors and tourism leaders spoke out against the federal government’s refusal to scrap the ArriveCan app. In response, the Liberals suspended the proof of vaccination requirements temporarily, while still requiring the ArriveCan app to be used at all ports of entry, including land borders. This has not helped end the chaos and anxiety we are seeing. This is hurting border communities like Cornwall. Unfortunately, we are not seeing pre-pandemic normal volumes of cross-border traffic and we should be. This is a direct and real consequence of a federal incompetence. The Liberals need to listen to these valid criticisms and acknowledge there is no need for ArriveCan to be mandatory to complete when returning to Canada. With so many glitches and complaints, it needs to be scrapped. Canadians have been more than patient with the rules and restrictions during the pandemic. It’s time to make it easier to travel, end all federal mandates permanently, and let Canadians live their lives again without threats of charges and fears of being fined.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is pleased to announce the hiring of Heather Henry as the tribal government’s new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Henry was hired in 2014 as the Financial Director and was the AssistantCFO since January 2021 before her formal acceptance of the CFO position on Ohiaríhha/June 27, 2022. She possesses years of financial experience that will help strengthen the Tribal government’s fiscal responsibility and accountability to membership. “I’m very excited for the opportunity to use my financial management skills and experience to strengthen economic diversification and self-sufficiency. It’s a huge task and challenge, but the Tribe has done a tremendous job of coalescing a professional team of financial analysts and accountants who have the best interests of the community at heart,” stated Heather Henry. Henry is an enrolled tribal member, along with her three children, and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from Kettering University located in Flint, Michigan in 2004, with a Minor in Business Management. In 2007, she received a Masters of Science in Finance from Indiana University, where she attended the top-ranked Kelley School of Business. Prior to joining the Tribe; Henry served as an Associate Controller at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York for three (3) years and was a Senior Financial Analyst for ALCOA and a Financial Analyst at
General Motors -- both located in Massena, New York. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Heather on her significant career accomplishment and know that she will do her very best to support the Tribe as we navigate the fiscal management challenges, opportunities, and issues that lie ahead for the benefit of the Akwesasne community,” shared the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council. As the Tribe’s Chief Financial Officer, Henry will be responsible for all matters Heather Henry related to the financial affairs of the tribal government; including financial analysis, ensuring sound accounting practices, and strengthening relationships with banking institutions. Other responsibilities include investments, audits, financing arrangements, as well as summaries and forecasts for future growth and general economic outlook. “Heather has added tremendous value to the SRMT since she started as our Finance Director in 2014. She has been a driving force for many process improvements within the Finance Department that have helped our Tribe present information to community members in a clear and concise fashion. She has tracked our cash flow throughout the pandemic and has been a critical asset in the strategic management of our CARES and ARPA funds,” added SRMT Executive Director Tsiorasa Barreiro.
As you age, you may notice minor changes in your overall health. While some symptoms are a normal part of aging, others require immediate attention. Here are four changes in your health you should never ignore. 1. A WOUND THAT WON’T HEAL Do you have a wound that’s slow to heal? If so, it may be a good idea to see your doctor. If you have a low-grade fever or the injury becomes red and increasingly painful, seek immediate help. 2. AN ABNORMAL PRESENCE OF BLOOD Unless you have a known medical condition, you must alert your doctor if you notice blood in your stool, urine or spit. If the bleeding is new or recurring and accompanied by other symptoms, go to the emergency room right
away. 3. UNUSUAL STOMACH PAIN Abdominal pain that increases gradually, lasts a long time or appears suddenly should be taken seriously. If this is happening to you, visit your doctor. They may refer you to a gastroenterologist for further testing. 4. INCREASING SHORTNESS OF BREATH Shortness of breath that prevents you from doing everyday activities like climbing stairs and going on walks should be investigated. This could be a sign of a serious health problem, especially if accompanied by a fever or chest pain. If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to consult a health care professional. “Me and My Phone”
Girls and young women, are becoming uniquely tangled in social media expectations and comparisons. Their lives are being shaped—and misshaped—by how they live online. In April of 2022, the Atlantic reported that “we are experiencing an extreme teenage mental health crisis.” In 2009, about 25 percent of high school students said they had persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. By last year, it was up to 44 percent, the highest level of teenage sadness ever recorded. For girls, that rate rose to 57 percent. Almost six out of 10 teenage girls feel persistently sad or hopeless. Here’s an obvious culprit: If you stood a teen from 2009 next to a teen from 2022, what would be the most noticeable difference between them? One of them would be on their phone. How is social media shaping us? By 2010, one in five adults had a smartphone; and today, it’s more than four out of five. The average adult user is on for over two hours a day. The average teen is on for more than five hours. I bet you’ve seen people doing it—at bus stops, restaurants or doctor’s offices or just walking down the street. Our posture has literally changed from shoulders back
and eyes up to eyes down, hunched over our devices. Pilates instructors now have classes working on lateral muscles to combat the hours people spend slouched over their screens. It’s impossible to detect or measure all the ways this has changed our society. But it correlates pretty well with our rising rates of depression and anxiety. Actually, it matches exactly with the rising rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm in females under 25. Teens who use social media more than five hours a day are twice as likely to be depressed as non-users. Solutions? There are many, but try taking a one week-break from social media. See how your thinking changes. Take notes! Your head will be buzzing less and your soul will calm down. Go out for a bike ride or walk in the woods. Go camping, play games. Something good will actually take the place of Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter! The Lord can and will provide you with an identity, not electronically fabricated. This is good! SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT COORDINATOR CITY OF CORNWALL
It is no surprise that we are experiencing hotter temperatures. Last year, most major Canadian cities experienced a substantial increase in days above 30 degrees Celsius than previous years. With the global temperatures rising, heat waves will become more intense and more frequent than before. The extreme heat can not only take a toll on our health, but it can also affect wildlife, including bumblebees. Scientists caution that heat stress could become a major factor in future extinctions. An urban heat island is what happens when a city is warmer than the rural area around it. Cities can be three degrees warmer than the nearby countryside. The difference in temperature between urban and less-developed rural areas has to do with how well the surfaces in each environment absorb and hold heat. Rural areas are covered with plants: grasses, trees, and crops. These plants act as a natural air conditioner. Alternatively, in urban areas, there is far less vegetation. Instead, cities have plenty of sidewalks, paved streets, parking lots and buildings. These dark surfaces absorb the sun’s heat and lighter surfaces reflect heat from the sun. Think of the clothing colours that you wear. Outdoors, would you feel cooler in a white
Devcore, one of the National Capital’s leading real estate developers is expanding its portfolio with the acquisition of the NAV CENTRE, a 630,000 square foot multi-purpose hotel, training and conference facility sitting on 75 acres overlooking the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall, Ontario. The facility will be rebranded as the DEV “Hotel and Conference Centre”. “The DEV is Eastern Ontario’s largest multi-purpose conference centre offering exceptional amenities and accommodations in an enviable central location,” said Jean-Pierre Poulin, President of Devcore. “We are committed to working with local partners such as the City of Cornwall and surrounding counties along with collaborating closely with Akwesasne and First Nations to ensure that the Centre operates as a key stakeholder and to attract opportunities to Cornwall which benefit all.” NAV CANADA will continue operations on the site as a tenant, as will the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations (CFSACO). “We are excited and happy about the future for Cornwall,” said Mr. Poulin. “We have been active investors since 2020 and saw tremendous
growth opportunities here. The DEV project will allow us to develop an innovative and sustainable world class mixed use community, while leveraging 1VALET’s Smart Building Platform to connect all residents to a central suite of amenities.” The conference centre will be managed by Atlific Hotels, one of Canada’s largest privately held management companies, with over 40 hotels from coast to coast. Atlific will manage and oversee all aspects of day-to-day operations, including conference and event facilities and restaurant operations; and collaborate to deliver top-tier performance. “For well over a decade, the facility has evolved to attract new and diverse business segments to Cornwall from across Canada and the globe including being a preferred location for corporate conferences, sporting and special meetings and events, government training programs and well known to support business continuity during crisis and evacuations for people in need” said Kim Coe-Turner, Vice-President of Business Development and Government Relations with the Devcore group.

or black t-shirt? Cities also have tall buildings which block hot air from rising up and out. Natural infrastructure like trees, plants, gardens, and wetlands can help cool cities, and the more biodiversity within this natural infrastructure, the better! Biodiversity is all of the different kinds of life you’ll find in one area, which include animals, plants, fungi, and even bacteria. All of these species and organisms work together to maintain balance and support life on Planet Earth. From July 28 to August 1, City of Cornwall staff along with staff from the River Institute and Raisin Region Conservation Authority will be participating in a Big Backyard BioBlitz. A BioBlitz happens when the community assists scientists by recording as many species as possible within a selected location and over a short period of time. Participating as a citizen scientist is a way for anyone with or without a science background to contribute knowledge with data collection and monitoring. Want to participate in the Big Backyard BioBlitz with us? With your smartphone, download the iNaturalist app, create an account and join the City of Cornwall Public Project - inaturalist.org/projects/city-ofcornwall-public. From July 28 to August 1 record what, where, and when you make an observation. Upload as many observations as you can during the Big Backyard BioBlitz event. We look forward to checking out what you discover! For more information contact kbray@cornwall.ca.

The next wave is approaching
8 - Wednesday, July 27, 2022
- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
Buckle up…it’s going to be an interesting few weeks with experts warning that we’re in the midst of a seventh COVID wave (yup, we’ve converted the touchdown) coupled with a local hospital that continues to roll with the punches. This spring saw the highest number of visits to the Cornwall Community Hospital’s (CCH) Emergency Department in five years, all while the hospital simultaneously dealt with a shortage of available health-care staff and emergency physicians. The hospital is also short beds due to rising numbers of long-stay Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients. This means emergency room patients are waiting even longer to be assessed and admitted, and staff are enduring increased abuse from frustrated patients and families. C’mon folks – can’t we all just get along? The Cornwall Community Hospital is not perfect – we challenge you to find one that is. But our local hospital is run by professional, competent administrators that are always making decisions to improve health care. The boots-on-the-ground staffers,
including doctors and those angel-like nurses, are likewise doing yeoman’s service to make sure patients are cared for with respect and a soft touch. So, when the hospital is forced to issue a media release calling for patience from patients, we get concerned. For the hospital. By now everyone knows the world is a different place. The litany goes on… inflation, supply-chain delays, no jobs, no workers…and no patience. Sure, when one is hurt or ill, they expect quality care in a reasonable amount of time. But not at the cost of alienating hard-working staff whom we should be thanking, not criticizing. These issues are not unique to Cornwall as the Ontario Hospital Association is reporting that hospitals throughout the province are experiencing high ALC numbers and worsening staffing pressures, causing some of the highest provincial wait and ambulance offload times in more than 10 years. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on health human resources. Many health-care workers moved to other areas of the system or left the occupation, and many smaller
communities such as Cornwall face severe physician shortages. Locally these pressures have been exacerbated by the recent closure of the McConnell Medical Clinic, leaving many people feeling like they have no choice but to visit the Emergency Department. Unlike a walk-in clinic, when patients report to a hospital emergency department, staff use a method called triage to determine who needs to be seen first. What this means is that patients are called based on the severity of symptoms rather than the order they checked in. Full stop. So if you happen to be one of those unlucky souls who’s been waiting for an emergency room doctor for
hours, remember – it’s not about you. It could get worse. Some hospitals in Obtario have been forced to shutter their emergency rooms or reduced operating hours. What would the complainers do then? WHILE WE’RE AT IT: The Cornwall hospital has recently eased SOME pandemic restrictions, but masks are still required at all times in the hospital, even while visiting with loved ones at the bedside. This is because the hospital is unique from other community settings in that it provides care to vulnerable patients, and many hospital rooms and waiting areas are shared spaces with others who are ill or recovering.
The Island Nick Wolochatiuk
DANCES WITH WORDS NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
Two hours of relaxed paddling has put the village far astern. Like Columbus, we know what’s behind us, but are clueless as to what lies ahead. Everything we are seeing is a mirror image, as the winds of the day have not yet awakened. We are the only ones up and about. No droning of motorboats, no banging of roofers’ hammers, no sounds other than the drip of water from our paddles. The shoreline ahead changes as we continue our exploring. A hill rises above the skyline. No, it seems to be an island. As we continue our reconnaissance, we see no flagpole, no dock, no moored boat. Yes, it’s an island. Eventually, our complete 360 of it proves it to
be so. It’s about an acre in size, topped by several tall pines, which dwarf the varied maples, shrubbery, birch and beech below their massive trunks. The rocky shoreline is lined with all sorts of dense vegetation. It’s time to attempt our D-Day Juno. The narrow beam and shallow draught of our canoe allows us to thread our way through the boulders and shallows to a narrow gap in the shoreline underbrush. “Oops! Didn’t realize that rock was there. Let’s back up again.” I call out, “Anybody there?”, hoping for no response. No response, so we clamber up the steep, well-trodden rocky slope. No barrier of underbrush. The clearing on top is carpeted with soft pine needles. No litter. Just a yellow official ‘OK TO CAMP’ symbol, and among the trees, an outhouse with no door. Until someone else comes, by canoe or helicopter, it’s ours! Time to haul our canoe

OUR FIRST SIGHT OF THE ISLAND – It’s like an upside-down shallow soup bowl. Except for its necklace of shoreline boulders, little exposed rock. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk) out of the water, secure it to a tree, and Sherpa all our stuff to the top. Our three-day stay will begin. I can’t print our name for the island
because it’s based on the presence of an outhouse, and this is a family newspaper. Some day, you too may discover your very own island.

LETTERS to the
EDITOR
info@seawaynews.media Dear Editor: The Chuck Charlebois Trail is in need of a major facelift. It’s a crown jewel for our city, a recreational and tourist destination, the gateway to the Port Lands and it’s falling apart. The pavement is crumbling, unsafe and unappealing and the orange fence which is off kilter is not up to code. Area residents are doing their part and now it’s time for the City to do theirs. Budget deliberations this year must include money for an upgrade, Chuck would ex pect nothing less. Mark A. MacDonald Dear Editor, Re: Cornwall’s Mayor Glen Grant’s letter in the Seaway News on July 6.2022 about SPEEDING on Cornwall Streets. Thanks Mayor for taking the time to address this issue, and thanks for a GREAT letter. First of all it did NOT take me 3 minutes to read the letter.. Yes there is a problem with speeding on the streets of Cornwall. What we DON’T have to do is to turn 1 way streets into 2 way streets. What we have to do is get REAL POLICE ENFORCEMENT. Listen SPEEDING is NOT only on your street or mine, but all over the city.. I am sure the Cornwall Mayor has all the data about speeding. Photo radar has been used over and over again and then scrapped. I have lived in Cornwall for 45 years and yes they do Radar Guns in areas that need to be checked. Police can not be everywhere at once or when someone calls about a complaint about speeding. Anyways I do understand the concerns about speeding from B. Thorpe on Sydney, Sir its all over the city . Sir I do understand your concerns and its frustrating and I am also FED UP on Lefebvre as its a major race track. So is Danis and so is Gardner . Send letter to Chief of Police and City Council and Police Board. Take care Mr Thorpe, keep well. Derek Sheppard Dear Editor, I should be used to it by now, but it still shocks me to see where most of our vegetables in the grocery stores come from. During the winter I was going to make a special dinner for a group of friends that required basil. I was in a rush and did not look closely at the package, believing it was greenhouse grown or from the USA. To my surprise it was from Israel. That small package of herbs had travelled half way around the world! But that was during the winter. Sadly, when you go to the store now, during peak growing season in Canada, too many of the “fresh” vegetables come from faraway places. Apples and pears from Argentina and New Zealand, and vegetables from Guatemala and Peru. Since New Zealand is “down under”, the farthest away from Canada, to ship it all this way makes no sense. I am especially upset when I see peas from Peru and Guatemala. I am growing peas in my garden in my backyard! I am also growing basil. I found packages of chives grown in Ethiopia! Surely, Canadian farmers can be found, willing to grow the vegetables and herbs here in Canada. Just pay them properly. If vegetables are cheaper when transported long distances, then the farmers that grew them got paid too little. What can be grown in Canada, should be grown in Canada by Canadian Farmers! Vegetables have the best nutritional value when eaten fresh, soon after the harvest. That’s why your home grown vegetables taste so good. There is good news, though, we have several Farmer’s Markets in our area with seasonal, fresh produce. To see the friendly faces of people that grew your food is an added bonus. I assure you, it tastes better! Sincerely, Anke Craig

Talk about a whacky week in the news cycle. It wasn’t as the late, great national columnist Allan Fotheringham often complained - in the dog days of summer there is more newsprint than news. A small sampling: Unusual weather that is rapidly becoming not so unusual. Report of big ice melt in Greenland. Sky-high inflation. Rising interest rates. Fear of a recession. A health-care system on the brink of collapse. Emergency room doors being locked. Another COVID-19 wave – No. 7 - that is expected to get worse in the fall. A dire doomsday threat by the Ruskies as the war in Ukraine drags on. And, then there was this news nugget that got far too much attention: The Prime Minister’s new hairdo. Some pundits claimed that he now resembles Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber. A cynic, no doubt of the Conservative persuasion, argued the comparison is not fair ... to Jim Carey. Some where out there is a hairdresser/barber living in fear of being hunted down by the media mob. As a guy who visits the barber twice a year, need to or not, I’m not about to make fun of any hair-do, and that includes The Donald’s mop. Sometimes, justice is found in strange places. Like inside a jail. The mutt who beat up an 81-year-old grandmother and robbed her of the $480 she had just withdrawn from an Aurora bank ATM on July 31 was introduced to some jail house style justice after being arrested and placed in the slammer to await a bail hearing. The woman, who fought back, was treated at hospital for rib injuries and bruising. Talk about spunk. She told a Toronto newspaper that she tried to knee him where it would hurt the most (OUCH!) but was thrown to the floor before she could administer the coup de grace. Jail officials said the 35-year-old Sudbury man and a couple of inmates were involved in a “confrontation” soon after his arrival. Jail officials believe it might have been connected to the assault on granny. Do you think! A four-year-old Moulinette boy died after a back-yard make-shift tent caught fire. He was rushed to Cornwall General Hospital by neighbours Cecil Lama and Harold Foley but died a few hours after. It was believed the straw floor caught fire while the lad was playing with matches left in the tent. POLICE BLOTTER CIRCA 1938 When Bainsville neighbour William Lagrue, awakened by his crying infant son, noticed a dim light inside the Sangster and Brothers General Store at 2:30 a.m. he called his neighbour, one of the Sangsters. Armed with rifles, they surprised the two crooks as they were exiting the rear of the store with bags of merchandize. A half-hour later two officers dispatched from the Cornwall OPP office arrived to take the pair into custody. A search found a revolver in the pocket of one man. Three days later they pleaded guilty and sentenced to two-year penitentiary terms for the break-in. The man with the revolver received an additional 12 months. ... Patricia Monahan, the lone overnight operator at the Bell office on Pitt Street, spotted two youths inside the Walker Store next door. She alerted town police. Minutes later Const. Allan Clark (future police chief) and Special Const. Lloyd McKenzie took the pair into custody and walked them to the nearby police station. ... Magistrate P. C. Bergeron said Cornwall and area had an illegal gambling problem that needed to be rectified. A city man was charged after a noon-hour police raid on the King George Hotel beverage room. It was the second such raid on a local illegal gambling operation in less than a month. Police said stacks of racing forms were found in the hotel and in the accused’s room at a nearby boarding house. Considering it was the accused’s first offence, Mag. Bergeron fined him $100 but warned a repeat of the offence would come with a jail sentence. Depending on the length of your marriage, there may be a very good chance that one or both of the spouses will inherit money and/or other assets during the time that you are married. What the spouse does with those funds and/or assets will be key as to whether or not they count in the family property division if the marriage ends. There are a number of elements that need to be in place if, upon separation, you want to try and exclude your inheritance from the family property that is divisible with your spouse. our community. Our community survey closed July 20th and we are excited to read the comments submitted by our residents! We are thrilled to experience in-person fairs and community events again this summer! The highly anticipated return of the Glengarry Highland Games will take place July 29th and 30th in Maxville. Dust off your kilts and let’s celebrate our Scottish Heritage! Additionally, the 211th edition of the Williamstown Fair, taking place August 5th to 7th, always brings out a great crowd. I would also like to thank the Boys and Girls Club for running another successful camp in Williamstown this summer. Watch our website for more collaborations in the future. I wish you all a long and relaxing summer. Please take time to pause, look around, reflect, and enjoy everything South Glengarry have to offer.

marriage and those funds and/or assets must be present or traced into funds and/or assets that exist on the date of separation. If you inherit funds and spend it on family vacations and other expenses, you will not get any exclusion for that inheritance. If, on the other hand, you inherit a car and still have that car on the date of separation, there is a good chance it will be excluded from the division of family property. It becomes very tricky when the spouse who inherits the funds deposits them into a joint account with their spouse, purchases a matrimonial home or another jointly owned asset. There may be a way to salvage part of the exclusion but this is something that is better addressed at the time that you inherit, not when you separate. The best thing to do is consult the professionals, including your accountant, financial advisor and, especially, your lawyer so that you can plan for the worse, while still benefiting from your inheritance.
the actions being taken as a result. On July 14th, 2022 at approximately 8:00 pm, the CPS received a 9-1-1 call to respond to a theft at a Second Street business, in which the suspects had allegedly been assaultive towards staff members. Police attended and spoke to the suspects, being an adult and three youths. During this time, the adult became uncooperative with police and resisted arrest, resulting in a struggle. At this time, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Police officers undergo extensive training to ensure a safe resolution of many types of incidents. They are authorized to use force in the execution of their duties to control resistant, assaultive or life-threatening behaviour, in addition to when defending themselves, other officers and members of the public. Chief of Police Shawna Spowart confirms that the Cornwall Police Service is in receipt of the video and is investigating the conduct of our officers to ensure that the response was in alignment with the policies and training provided to all police officers. She states, “We ask for the patience of the community as we gather the necessary information to inform our direction.”

Early settlement in the area began in 1785 Finch Township was originally part of the Royal Township of Osnabruck, and Roxborough Township was originally part of the Royal Township of Cornwall. Stormont County was created in 1792, and both Finch and Roxborough were separated from their southerly parents in 1798. The hamlet of Berwick was first settled by four Cockburn brothers from Scotland in the early 19th century. Berwick became the administrative home of municipal government in the former Finch Township, incorporated January 1, 1850. The New York and Ottawa Railway was built in 1897 and sent up to four daily passenger in 1883. Berwick remains the administrative centre of North Stormont. ARIES: This week you’ll do some letting go. If you return to work, your files may be in a bit of a mess upon your arrival. You’ll have to revise your organization and review your schedule in detail before you get down to business. TAURUS: There are plenty of people around you, and your social media is very active. You could end your vacation by planning a party to bring your loved ones together. Pleasure and lovely moments are on the horizon. GEMINI: The back-to-school ads are out already. Even if you don’t have children, you’ll be responsible for an activity that has similar requirements, even if it’s just to nurture some of your loved ones. CANCER: While you may have social activities planned, your boss or some other obligation will put a damper on your enthusiasm. They’ll say you must prioritize responsibilities over fun. You’ll find peace of mind for a celebration. LEO: Vacation or not, you’ll be looking to make an escape soon. At least, you’ll take some time for a road trip, so you’ll make some lovely discoveries and get away from it all for a while. VIRGO: You’ll feel on edge. Luckily, as the saying goes, sunshine comes after the rain. You’ll have occasion to celebrate your good fortune in one way or another. Smile at life, and you’ll find it smiles back at you. LIBRA: You’ll feel a measure of irritation and need to take some time. You’ll have to make some adjustments to avoid miscommunications in the future. This will quickly help with mutual understanding. SCORPIO: Work will take up a lot of space this week. You’ll become aware of the importance of spending quality time with loved ones. Harmony brings balance within all spheres of your life. SAGITTARIUS: You may be surprised by some changes when you return to work from vacation. To your great surprise, you may be offered a new management role or a promotion due to a leader’s departure. CAPRICORN: You’ll embark on some work at home. Why not update your décor? You’ll discover new talents and be filled with pride to see what you can do with your very own hands. AQUARIUS: You’ll find happiness in shopping. You’ll be on the search for bargains and will sniff out many treasures. You may also discover a valuable antique in the attic or basement of a family member. PISCES: After a period of stress and intense activity, what can be more pleasant than a bit of relaxation? You’ll take some time to visit a spa and indulge in self-care. Treat yourself and make the most of the present moment.

In Memoriam
Originally from Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on July 23 at the age of 93 in Cornwall. Beloved husband of the late Margaret Kyte (née Spinella). Loving father of Lynn Kyte, Randy Kyte (Jennifer) and Terry Kyte (Darlene). Cherished grandfather of Jeff, Mark, Trevor, Meagan, Emily, Justin and Andrew, and step-grandfather of Bryan (Alex), Zachary, Ben, and Arielle. Son of the late Frederick and Suzannah (née Roberts) Kyte. Survived by sister Mirilou Jayes. Predeceased by brothers Henry Kyte, Fred Jr. Kyte and Richard Kyte, and by sisters Jean Kyte and Eleanor Senior. Hugh began his career sailing the Great Lakes, before settling in Cornwall where he spent the next 42 years at the StandardFreeholder. That’s where he met the love of his life, Margaret, to whom he was happily married for 64 years. While holding the family title of Champion lawn darts player, Hugh could also take on anyone at a game of pool – even at the age of 93. When not reminiscing about his days on the ships or his hometown in Louisbourg, Cape Breton, Hugh was an avid volunteer in the community, as well as a member of the Navy Club and Cornwall Legion. He and his great sense of humour will be greatly missed by many family and friends. Resting at Lahaie & Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Home, West Branch, 20 Seventh Street West from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 in Trinity Anglican Church at 2 p.m. followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, Hugh would have appreciated donations to Centre105, Trinity Anglican Food Bank, 105 Second Street West, Cornwall, ON K6J 3W5. In Memoriam
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) is reporting that the region is seeing a significant increase in COVID-19 cases recently. Local infection indicators are increasing, including COVID-19 test positivity rates, wastewater levels, hospitalizations and outbreaks. “We are currently in the 7th wave of COVID19, along with the rest of Ontario,” states Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health. “We’re watching local indicators closely and expect that the wave will peak over the next 1-2 weeks both locally and provincially.” He anticipates that the 7th wave will follow the same pattern seen in other countries: a 4-week increase followed by a 4-week decline. The 7th wave is being driven by the highly transmissible BA.5 Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which has been steadily increasing across the province in the last month. The timing also coincides with a decrease in vaccine and infection-related immunity in many people. “Protection from the two-dose vaccine series for many people is wearing off,” explains Dr. Roumeliotis. “Over 65% of people under 50 have not yet gotten their first booster dose. This is a concern as the booster dose provides significant added protection against serious illness and hospitalization.” He adds that immunity from previous infections also decreases over time.
Ma pu
The EOHU is strongly recommending the following measures to help protect yourself and others from COVID-19: • Make sure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine. This is especially important for individuals who have not yet received their first, second or third dose (first booster). Fourth doses (second boosters) are also now available for eligible individuals age 18+. For vaccine details, including how to book an appointment, see www.eohu.ca/vaccines. • Wear a mask in public indoor settings and outdoor crowded events where distancing is difficult or not possible, such as at concerts, festivals, busy markets, etc. • Stay home if you’re sick. • Continue following public health measures like frequent handwashing and coughing or sneezing into your sleeve. For more information and the latest COVID19 updates, visit www.EOHU.ca/ coronavirus.

The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) and Dairy Queen of Cornwall have teamed up again this summer for the return of “Project PYPER,” a program aimed towards benefiting youth in our community. Project: PYPER (Police Youth Positive Experience Rewards) will be ongoing throughout the summer, where members of the CPS will be on patrol, looking out for incredible kids who are committing certain “offences.” The CPS is on the lookout for kids who are: · Wearing their bicycle helmet · Riding their bicycle safely · Caught doing a good deed · Caught engaged in fair play · Caught being kind/sharing · Caught being good to family members · Volunteering “This is an initiative that gives CPS members an opportunity to engage with the youth in our community in a positive way, while allowing us to positively impact them. That is the primary objective of this project,” said Sergeant Jamie Day. When caught doing any of the actions above, the child will be issued a CPS Official Citation, permitting them to redeem a free Dairy Queen treat in Cornwall. The CPS looks forward to engaging with the incredible youth in our community this summer.

Meet Rylee Paquette. She’s 11 years old and just had 12 inches of hair cut off to donate to the Angel Hair for Kids program run by A Child’s Voice Foundation. This charity will use the hair and the funds that Rylee is collecting to create wigs for kids undergoing cancer treatments. The wigs are also used for kids who lose their hair from other illnesses, medical conditions, medications and even trauma. Rylee loved her long hair with beautiMP Eric Duncan on the move…Another great night out in the community with good ful highlights but she also loves the thought crowds and a chance to catch up with many people.
