Tim Horton’s Bowl for Kids Sake goes virtual NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – Big Brothers/ Big Sisters (BBBS) Cornwall has decided to move their 44th annual Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser to a virtual format this year due to the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. “We were hopeful of a return to the popular and fun in person bowling event,” said Big

Brothers Big Sisters Fundraising Coordinator David Murphy. “But going virtual offers residents and agency supporters other opportunities to participate.” From Jan. 31 to March 4 teams will be able to participate in the fundraiser by either bowling virtually through the following link: https:// www.bbbsmi.org/VBOWLING/ or by bowling with your own at home bowling setup or by taking part in another physical activity like jogging

or jumping rope. The 2021 Tim Hortons Bowl For Kids Sake was also virtual, and saw some teams bowl with pins and balls created from every day items like soccer balls and water bottles for pins. Bowling scores, kilometers run, or number of ropes jumped can be submitted to david.murphy@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca Teams of four to six players can sign up by

also emailing david.murphy@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca Teams that register before Jan. 28 qualify for early bird prizes. “We will enjoy the event and the creative ways supporters will participate,” said Murphy. To receive your team registration kits, please call 613-933-8035 or email cornwall@ bigbrothersbigsisters.ca or david.murphy@ bigbrothersbigsisters.ca.

City survey identifies 77 homeless individuals in region NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall was one of 47 municipalities that took part in a point-in-time enumeration to measure the level of homelessness in the community. The point-in-time enumeration endeavoured to create a snapshot of homelessness on Oct. 27, 2021. On that day, Cornwall’s Human Services department conducted a questionnaire, phone in options inviting members of the public to share their experience with homelessness and they also worked with community organizations such as the Cornwall Police Service, Centre 105, the Agape Centre, the House of Lazarus and others to reach out to those experiencing homelessness. As a result of the survey, the City aimed at creating a by-name-list for homelessness, which is a database containing names,

contact information, household information and more aimed at helping those who are homeless. The point-in-time enumeration identified 77 individuals who said that they were homeless on Oct. 27, 2021, 55 of which agreed to take the survey and 35 of which agreed to be included on the by-name-list. Of those who said they were homeless 21 lived with family or a friend, four were paying to stay in a motel/ hotel, fiver were in a treatment centre, 11 were staying in a homeless shelter/ women’s shelter/ transitional shelter, four were in a motel/ hotel funded by city, five were living on street and one was living in their car. Of those who completed the survey, 31 were male, 24 were female. Only four were under the age of 25, most, 18, were between ages 25 and 35, and two were over the age of 65. The vast majority of those who completed

“It is supposed to drop as low as negative 35 tonight, and a number of people have indicated they have nowhere to go . . . would they go to the hospital,” Towndale asked. Mullur explained that the Cornwall Police Service could refer someone to the City’s crisis bed program. She explained that having a homeless shelter in Cornwall would only be a temporary solution for most people without addressing the core issues of homelessness as she saw them. “If we have more resources to increasing the housing stock or more rental assistance that might go a long way. That’s what I think,” she said. The City of Cornwall recently broke ground on a new 77 unit affordable housing complex to be built on the corner of McConnell Ave. and Ninth St. that is expected to be completed early next year.

Tips for reducing the risk of falling

Falls are a serious issue for people over the age of 65. Every year, about one in three seniors fall at least once and 56 per cent of falls involving seniors lead to fractures A further statistic is worth considering: 30 to 50 per cent of falls involving seniors are caused by environmental factors such as uneven surfaces, poor lighting or slippery floors. It follows that falls can often be prevented through taking proactive steps to reduce falling hazards in your immediate environment. Seniors can reduce their risk of falling at home by doing the following: • Make sure all rooms have adequate lighting • Install handrails in baths and showers • Install a handrail on stairs that extends beyond the top and bottom steps • Keep frequently used items in easy-toreach places • Avoid clutter • Don’t keep electric cords where they can be tripped over And, naturally, staying limber also plays a key role in reducing the risk of falling. In addition to eating well and staying active, seniors should consider making balance

the survey, 29, said that they were homeless because they could not afford housing. Of those surveyed, six were fully employed, 19 were on ODSP, and nine had no income. Meena Mullur of the City of Cornwall’s Human Services Department said that 95 per cent of respondents were single or a couple living together without children. “There are multiple things that can lead you to that situation and you need to be stable in your life before looking for housing,” said Councillor Carilyne Hébert. “Just getting a job just isn’t that simple for so many people,” Hébert explained citing issued such as drug addiction and mental illness. “You need to be setup for success.” Councillor Justin Towndale asked what a person who was homeless and living on the street could do on a night where it was very cold. On Monday night Jan. 10, temperatures were forecasted to plumet to minus 35 degrees Celsius.

Remembering organ donation advocate NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – Members of the Cornwall and SD&G community have paid tribute this past week to a local organ donor advocate and young community leader Myles Lynch. Lynch passed away on the morning of Friday, Dec. 31, 2021 after a lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis. He was 24. “The world lost a bright light this morning”. Myles Lynch was a fighter, three-time double lung transplant recipient, advocate for organ donation and an important member of our Cornwall community & CHEO family. He was also wildly intelligent and extremely funny…. an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of meeting him & one who kept his nurses on their toes (especially with his classic startle attacks on night shift lol)! Sending all my love and condolences to the Lynch family ‘Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of yours and Myles’ journey. Please join us in honouring Myles life and sign up to be an organ donor,” reads a post made on Facebook by the Dream Maker Productions account. Lynch made history when he became the first Canadian to receive three double lung transplants in his lifetime. He had received his first lung transplant at the age of 17 after his lungs deteriorated due to Cystic Fibrosis, and then two more due to chronic organ rejection. In 2020 Lynch began working with Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan to push for the creation of a national organ donation opt-out program.

Myles Lynch during a video advocating for organ donation

“In my case, I was fortunate enough to have had 3 organ transplants over the last 5 years, but for every exceptional case like mine, there are many others whose time runs about before a good match can be found. I felt it important for me to try and do whatever I can to help many more, and the creation of a national opt-out program could save thousands of lives per year for generations to come,” said Lynch in 2020. In 2019 260 Canadians died while waiting for an organ donation. Lynch also had a passion for travel and art. In 2019 he created his own feature length film about his travel across Canada to Golden, BC, that summer titled 8 Thousand Myles. Dozens of tributes poured out from his friends and family on Lynch’s Facebook page after his passing, paying tribute to him as a friend as an advocate for organ donation. Lynch chose to donate his body to the University of Toronto in the Department of anatomical research for medical science. Those who wish to become an organ donor can register on through the province of Ontario.

City breaks ground on new affordable housing complex NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall announced on Monday, Jan. 10 that they broke ground on a new 77 unit affordable housing complex. “With the current housing crisis that has hit all parts of our country, housing has become a scarce commodity, particularly affordable housing. We are making a real commitment to increasing the supply of much needed affordable units,” said Cornwall Mayor Glen Grant. Located at the corner of McConnell Ave. and Ninth St. the $18.8 million dollar project will also feature commercial space that will

be occupied by the Housing Services Department for the City of Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G. “Our government is committed to ensuring that local communities are able to deliver critical services and resources that will help those residents who need it most,” said Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell. In August of 2021, the City of Cornwall Social and Housing Services department received a $4.2 million grant from the provincial Social Services Relief Fund and the Ontario Housing Priorities Initiative to support the project. “We have been in the planning stages of

Christians should be some of the most inspiring and enthusiastic workers around. We understand roles and appreciate authority. We should understand serving others! You want to find people fired up about life? They will likely be people who love their work and have plans and purpose for the day ahead! Is work something you have to do, or get to do? “Is it I owe, I owe, so off to work I go!” Or do you really find fulfillment in your work? Yes, even in retirement, you need to enjoy meaningful activity! Are you contributing to a cause? Can you volunteer somewhere? Martin Luther understood this when he wrote in the 16th century: “The maid who sweeps her kitchen is doing the will of God just as much as the monk who prays -- not because she may sing a Christian song as she sweeps but because God loves clean floors. The Christian shoemaker does his Christian duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making really good shoes, because God is very interested in good craftsmanship.” I love that! Let’s get to work in 2022! Pastor Jim

CORNWALL, Ontario – Langar is the term for a Sikh practice of giving away meals free of charge and Cornwall’s Flavour Kingdom, located on Montreal Rd., will begin holding langar’s of its own on the 13th day of every month starting in January. Paramjit Singh of Flavour Kingdom said that this was a practice that was started at his restaurants in Brampton, and that they wanted to bring the practice of langar to Cornwall. They chose to start offering langar meals in January to mark the one-month anniversary of the opening of Flavour Kingdom. In keeping with the langar tradition, the meals will be available to anyone, regardless of economic status. If the meals are sustainable, Singh is considering to begin offering them bi-weekly instead of just once a month.

Meals will be available as takeout only between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the 13th day of every month. Meals will be vegetarian or vegan, served with basmati rice, Daal, dry fruits Halwa and a bottle of water.

critical issues in communities across Canada, including our own,” said Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry MP Eric Duncan. “It’s important for all levels of government to collaborate and invest in projects such as this.”

Reflections on “Work” 100 years ago, Max Weber wrote about the Protestant (or Catholic I suppose) Work Ethic. It helped build our country! It was a set of values that stressed the moral value of work including these ideals: “You work ‘in community’ not just for you. You work for God. Don’t over spend on pleasure and luxuries. Too much comfort distracts people from their duty to God (wow!). Wealth isn’t evil, but it can tempt people to idleness and sin. Idle hands are the devil’s tools or workshop.” There’s a great nugget of truth in the Bible; Colossians chapter 3, verses 34-35 that reads: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Now, of course, some people are retired and some of you cannot work a regular job for a variety of health reasons, but the idea, the concept of working for a living is a good one! It’s not a curse! If anyone understands work, shouldn’t it be the people of God, fulfilled and living in a right relationship with our Creator? I’m inclined to think that

this project for some time and are very excited to see this project moving forward,” said Mellissa Morgan, Administrator, Cornwall SDG Human Services Department. The architectual design was handled by IBI Group, while Bourgon Construction will be the general contractor. “IBI Group is excited to be part of this much-needed 77-unit, energy-efficient housing project added to the Cornwall community. We have enjoyed the close collaboration with Cornwall & Area Housing Corporation, the City of Cornwall, consultants and the chosen contractor enabling the speedy start to the construction,” said Chun Wang, Architect with IBI Group. “We look forward to the project occupancy as soon as possible.” The project is expected to be completed in early 2023. “Housing affordability and supply are

CORNWALL, Ontario – The housing market in Cornwall continued to be white hot in 2021, with the average residential sale price climbing to $336,761, a nearly 29 per cent increase from the previous year according to the Cornwall Real Estate Board (CREB). The average residential real estate price has climbed significantly in the past two years. The average residential sale price in 2021 was over $100,000 higher than it was two years ago in 2019 when it sat at $224,976. The price climbed modestly by 16 per cent in 2020 to $261,523. The housing market in Cornwall seems to be picking up steam rather than slowing down, the average residential sale price in November of 2021 was in fact much higher than the year-to-date average. The average price of a home sold in Nov. 2021 was $411,684, an all-time record and over 21 per cent higher from the average sale price of Nov. 2020.

Troy Vaillancourt, President of CREB explained the hot housing market in a post on the CREB website. “Sales activity hasn’t taken much of a breather since the resurgence in the wake of the initial downfall at the onset of the pandemic, with November’s figure as evidence of this. On an annual basis we’ve already set a record, with activity in 2021 well ahead of all other years,” said Vaillancourt. “Supply continues to be an issue in our market, with new listings only trending at average levels for this time of year. Given the white-hot pace of demand against average levels of new supply it’s no surprise that competition among buyers is driving prices to new records, with average price levels reaching above $400k for the first time in history.” Not only is the price that homes are selling for climbing, but so is the volume of housing stock being sold. In the first 11 months of 2021 1,794 units were sold, another record, which is a nearly 20 per cent increase from the year before.

Housing is Cornwall’s biggest issue NICK SEEBRUCH

In October of this year Cornwall will again be heading to the polls in a municipal election. At the end of the last municipal election, there were several issues that I believed would dominate this term of Council and go into the next. Top issues I saw four years ago included developing Cornwall’s waterfront, growing the local economy, perhaps going back to a Ward system, and considering reducing the size of Council. Now, I believe there is just one issue that must be addressed by Council and by City administration and that is the issue of housing in the City of Cornwall. On Feb. 9, Statistics Canada will release the results of the 2021 Canadian Census. I believe that these results will show us a small snapshot of how fast the city has grown. U-Haul has already provided us with a small peak at this snapshot this past week. U-Haul ranked Cornwall as number 20 on its list of fastest growing Canadian cities based on the number of one-way truck rentals coming into Cornwall. In fact, the number of moving trucks coming to Cornwall grew by 17 per cent from the previous year. Also, look at housing. Housing prices are

skyrocketing in Cornwall and I believe that it is being driven by people moving to the city. The average home sale price in Cornwall in 2021 was over $336,000 and increase of nearly 29 per cent from the previous year and over $100,000 higher than the average sale price in 2019. I think that the COVID-19 pandemic is partially driving these higher home prices. More businesses are allowing their employees to work remotely and families who have that option are deciding that they no longer need to live in expensive cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa and are coming to live and work in communities like Cornwall where housing prices are relatively cheap, at least for them. There are great things coming in Cornwall’s future because of this rapid growth, I truly believe that. At the start of this week, the City of Cornwall approved the sale of over 158 acres of land to four different businesses looking to grow in Cornwall, at the handsome price of $50,000 an acre. There are real benefits to this rapid growth, but the hot housing market that has come along with it I believe is also creating an issue that needs to be addressed. People who already live here may be finding it harder and harder to make ends meet. Since the summer of 2021, I have spoken to multiple people in Cornwall who either were homeless, or close to it, and not because

they were unemployed, but simply because they were unable to get into Cornwall’s rental/ housing market either because of the expense or because of the lack of supply. Council received the results of a point-intime enumeration of homelessness in Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G and found that there were 77 people who identified as homeless, and of those 55, agreed to be surveyed. Of those surveyed, six were fully employed and 19 were on ODSP; 29 of the surveyed individuals said that they were unable to afford housing. The vast majority of those surveyed were either single or living together as a couple. In 2021, the City of Cornwall created an Ad Hoc Committee to address the housing issue

in Cornwall. The most direct solution to these problems would be increasing the amount of available housing in the city of Cornwall, and/ or providing rental subsidies in those in need. Both of these solutions that I have offered are easier said than done, but Cornwall did recently break ground on a new 77-unit affordable housing building on the corner of McConnell Ave. and Ninth St., which should be completed by early 2023. As you can see the causes and solutions of Cornwall’s housing issues are many and complex. What are your opinions on this issue? Email me a Letter to the Editor at nseebruch@seawaynews.media

My Wishes for Holiday Fliers Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

The Irish blessing is as follows: “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.” From my perspective as an airline passenger, here’s my rendition of that wish for good fortunes in travels. May the four-lane road to the airport be free of tie-ups, back-ups, rear-enders and detours. During your leisurely drive, may the sunrise be at your back, not glaring in your face. At the airport terminal: May the vast field of the parking lot have a vacant spot for your car

right at the entrance to the terminal. May both the pixel board and the loudspeaker announce that your flight is to depart on time. Upon boarding the plane, may you discover that there’s a bulkhead in front of your seat, giving you generous legroom. May the passenger seated beside you be a tiny little old lady who sleeps throughout the flight, not a restless sumo wrestler. May the three-year old in the seat behind you be thoroughly engrossed by the colouring book in his lap. May the in-flight movie be one of your all-time favourites, not a documentary about the two Boeing 747s that collided at Tenerife. May your take-off on runway 36 have a steady 50 kph north wind to shorten your take-off run. Throughout the entire 30,000’ asl eastward flight, may a 75 kph jetstream speed you to your destination. May your landing on the 11,000’ long runway 36 use up only 3,000’, because a steady

50 kph north wind eliminate the need for thrust reversers and tires smoking from hard braking. May your brilliant orange suitcase be the first item to emerge from the luggage carousel, ahead of all the black ones. May it ease onto the conveyor belt and pause at your beckoning hand. May some handsome Olympic athlete offer to retrieve it for you and place it onto a cart. May your best friend standing at the arrivals gate be waving a boldly-lettered sign with your nickname on it. For the rest of your travels, may joy and peace surround you, may refreshing experiences be added to your bank of fond memories and contentment latch the door of your comfortable accommodations. May happiness be with you now and bless you ever more. Those are my wishes for you, my fellow airline traveler.

OPINION

Cornwall gangster was killed in a wild shoot-out Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings

EDITORIAL@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

A police stake-out in east Montreal on the afternoon of Jan. 10, 1962 ended with a wild gun battle that left a Cornwall native, on the run after escaping prison, dead, a Montreal detective dead and another detective paralyzed after being shot in the back while trying to drag his wounded partner to safety. Montreal police had received a tip that Raymond Rouleau, who had been serving a five-year sentence at St. Vincent de Paul Prison, was expected to show up at a used car lot. When Rouleau (no relation to The Cat) recognized one of the undercover cops standing near the lot, he made a run for it up a staircase of a nearby tenement. Cornered at the top of the staircase, he made a last stand. He was shot 15 times. Two empty handguns were found beside his bullet-riddled body. It was a tragic year for the Montreal police department. Months later, in another shootout with the “Santa Claus” bank robber, two patrol officers were gunned down by a bank robber, dressed as Santa and armed with a semi-automatic rifle. Rouleau was well-known to Cornwall police. His last run-in with the local justice system was in 1955 when he was convicted of robbing Landry’s Groceteria at Guy and First streets.

He fled the store after a well-aimed butcher’s knife, fired by the store’s clerk, pierced his leg. He was arrested two hours later while seeking treatment at Hotel Dieu Hospital. He was sent to Kingston Pen for five years. * At its first meeting in 1962, city council adopted a new pay structure for councillors. Instead of being paid $20 for each council meeting and $15 for committee meetings, up to a maximum of $1,500 per year, councillors would receive $1,500 a year minus $20 for each missed meeting. The mayor’s stipend was set at $5,000. ODDS AND ENDS - 1962 The Ontario Provincial Police moved into new District 11 headquarters in Long Sault leaving behind cramped quarters on Augustus Street just south of Second Street. ... Cornwall Gordon Refrigeration Royals downed Morrisburg Orfuns 11-5 in a Cornwall Junior Hockey League game at the Water Street Arena. Ray Barnes had three goals with Bob Grant and Shad St. Jean notching two apiece. Ron Martelle, Ron Branchaud, Bernie Larue and rookie Bob Kilger scored the other goals. THIS AND THAT - Daniel Foy, brother of Vincent Foy, Cornwall’s new deputy police chief, has been appointed chief of Timmins Police Service. He takes over in February. He moves to the Timmins force from the Ontario Provincial Police were he was an inspector in charge of James Bay district. ... Vincent Foy, who finished his RCMP career as a superintendent in charge of major crimes in Saskatchewan, is working on a four-year

contract. We’re told that the initial offer was three years and he asked for five. The board met him halfway. Depending on how the stars align in the next few years, Foy could become Shawna Spowart’s successor. … It is not the first time RCMP officers have been recruited for top jobs at CPS. Chief Claude Shaver came from the Mounties as did Deputy Joe St. Denis. … It is no secret that at one time the relationship between the Mounties and city police rank and file was not warm and fuzzy. … Two high ranking Ontario Provincial Police officers with Cornwall ties were interested in applying for the chief’s position when the peculiar Tony Repa left to run a bed and breakfast in Central Ontario. Either one would have been, as they say, a keeper. When informed that the board required them to be tested by a psychiatrist, they withdrew. As one said, “I had 25-plus years in policing and they wanted me to undergo a psychiatric evaluation!” One could make a case that at least one member of the dysfunctional board at the time should have been tested. HEARD AND SEEN- If you are looking for a feel-good, fuzzy warm story when selecting a newsmaker of 2021, Sen. Bernadette Clement is the hands-down winner. However, the story that had the greatest impact was the sad, somewhat pathetic story (stories) of Frank Prevost’s fall from grace. Shock and awe is the only way to describe the initial story that the popular veteran politician had been charged by the OPP with sexual offences. It created a chain re-action: Lyle Warden

becoming the acting mayor of South Glengarry with Al Armstrong filling in as the temporary warden. It was one of those rare times when an investigation landed on the commisioner’s desk at Orillia headquarters before the charges were laid. ... Hard for somebody who doesn’t live in a bubble to know at least one person who has been infected by the new COVID strain. In fact, knowing several people who have contracted the virus is not uncommon. ... Last week’s crystal ball gazing vis-a-vis the upcoming Conservation nomination meeting wasn’t to suggest that the local provincial Conservative riding association favoured a particular candidate. It was our prediction. TRIVIA ANSWER The chain of office, donated to the city by the Kinsmen Club in 1945, has been worn at regular council meetings by every mayor since Aaron Horovitz received it on behalf of the city. The exception was Ed Lumley who broke with tradition. He wore the chain at his inaugural meeting in 1972 and his last meeting on Dec. 23, 1974. The chain contains pure silver. TRIVIA In 1980 this Cornwall plant, which opened in 1953, in what was then Cornwall Township, became known as British Cellophane Limited (BCL). What was its previous name? QUOTED – “Inflation is when you pay $15 for the $10 haircut you used to get for $5 when you had hair.” - Sam Ewing ONE LAST THING Keep in mind that you can’t have a filet mignon lifestyle with a hot dog work ethic.

socialization. She has been socialized frequently at the kennel with other dogs, passed the advanced obedience, and there have never been any issues. Some dogs bark as they pass by saying hello or just using their voices to acknowledge their presence. Either way, dogs react more than the people I encounter. The dogs want to see other dogs and they express themselves by their behaviour with barking or showing excitement by jumping and pulling. They are showing more emotions than the people who pass by me and avoid eye contact, saying nothing, and not even a smile. My intent is not to guess what is going through their mind when we encounter or whether they are just having a bad day. For whatever reason it is their choice not to greet me or smie. Is this a good choice? I am not here to judge, but perhaps if they just smiled, just maybe their day and mine can sparkle a little brighter. It is not really hard to smile. The dogs certainly try more to interact than humans. They might not have a voice, but their actions certainly demonstrate that they want to show somehow that they care. Humans only show that they don’t care as they go on with their day. There is no expectations on my part here, but being curteous or polite seems to be fleeting among humans but not among dogs. So, if you see me at the North End of the City walking with my dog, please say hello or just smile even if it is from distance. Did we become less social during this pandemic, perhaps yes, but I would suggest that we might look at our dogs for a very valuable lessons about social interaction or simple humanity. As an avid dog walker through the neighbourhood of the North End I see a fair amount of people walking alone, with a friend, or with a dog. My walks usually occur either in the morning or in the early afternoon, depending on the weather. My dog is always on a leash. As I was turning into a street with my dog, another lady was walking some distance behind us with her dog. Both dogs began turning around to look at each other, wanting to socilaze or play and they did that until they were out of each others sight. Two adults did not exchange any words or emotions whatsoever. Then, it struck me at that moment, the dogs that I encounter on my walk always show emotions or share an unspoken need to be together, but not humans. Are dogs more social than us? Are they more willing to interact with other dogs or even other humans? My dog gets all excited when she sees children waiting or getting on the school bus and I assume many other dogs do the same but not us humans. I am talking here about a simple Hi, a good morning, or just a smile that does not require a long conversation. Usually people are friendly by saying hello or they have a conversation with me about various topics from the weather, our dogs’ behaviours or the current health situation. Other people just walk by you without hello, good morning or even a smile. If they have a dog, their dog gets all excited seeing my dog and turn back looking at each other as they pass. My dog’s reaction is similar as she just wants to socialize with the other dogs. My usual reaction when seeing other people with a dog is to stay at a distance as I am unsure for safethy reasons of my or the other dog’s reaction or intentions during

Technology makes it possible for com panies to hire employees from all over the world. Though many businesses are looking overseas to expand their workforce, others are going in the opposite direction and focusing their efforts on investing in local talent. Here are three good reasons to hire locally. 1. YOU’LL BOOST THE LOCAL ECONOMY One of the biggest advantages of hiring locally is that it creates jobs and provides training opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available. This helps keep money in your community and strengthen the local economy. 2. YOU’LL GROW THE COMPANY

Hiring locally ensures your staff have a deep understanding of the local market, making it easier to bring in new business. In addition, a local hire will likely be more invested in helping your company succeed since it benefits their community. 3. YOU’LL SIMPLIFY THE HIRING PROCESS If you hire locally, there’s a good chance you already know someone who either fits the bill or knows the right candidate. Cornwall is a great place to live Surrounded by Akwesasne and the Counties of SDG, this area is a gem and letting people know you are part of it will enhance your business profile. As this area grows, so does the business commitment to open small, medium and large operations along with a mixture of industry and health services. The coordinated infrastructure growth in both the city and townships has seen many new and exciting subdivisions and retail areas continue to be developed and filled with local families upgrading or new people moving in.

Cornwall’s very popular magazine, Cornwall Living, was first published in May 2008. Cornwall Living has emerged as the premiere publication in Eastern Ontario – profiling Cornwall and the surrounding region with over 132 pages of stories showcasing life in Cornwall and the area, including health care, music, sports, real estate as well as small and large business development. The magazine also has stories on the city’s francophone roots. Cornwall Living is designed and produced by Seaway News, in cooperation with Cornwall Economic Development.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Maureen (Connolly) Swift passed away two days after her 85th New Year’s Day birthday, supported by her loving family. Maureen is survived by her devoted soulmate of 61 years and best friend Tom, son Patrick (Julie) of Cornwall, daughters Colleen MacDonell (Glenn) of Cornwall, Charlotte MacFarlane (Clark) of Owen Sound, Catherine Ianni (Joseph) of Cornwall. She is also survived by her beloved brother Gregory Gillis (Diane) of Fredericton, N.B. Predeceased by parents Leo and Lillian Connolly and 9 siblings. She will be sadly missed by grandchildren Justin, Cullen, Hannah, Sean, Meredith, Lauren, Ronald and Madeline. Nursing was a vocation for Maureen. A graduate of Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Kingston, Ontario, Maureen worked briefly at Hotel Dieu Hospital and St. Joseph’s Villa in Cornwall. After working in institutions, she shared her warmth, compassion, and skill at the community level as a visiting nurse with the Victorian Order of Nurses. During this employment, Maureen’s dedication was deeply appreciated by her patients. Maureen’s compassion and caring extended to all areas of her life, including her faith. Always active in church work, Maureen was a Charter Member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Women’s League and served as President for several terms. In addition, for fourteen years she co-ordinated and taught in the parish Religious Education program, preparing children to receive their sacraments. Maureen had a free-spirited nature. This characteristic allowed her to connect easily with children and to put adults at ease. Her spontaneity, energy, and creativity endure in her beautiful paintings. Maureen’s empathy and hard work made her a strong leader in the community and a loving family member. Her character will live on through her friends, family, and the various people she touched throughout her life. Our thanks to the staff at Sandfield Place who treated her like family for years. She was loved for her grace and humour.

Remember to support your local restaurants during the current lockdown. If you can afford it, try ordering out one night a week. These are small business owners who pour their heart and soul into their work. This lockdown isn’t their fault and they need our help. Remember, Christmas tree collection is this week. Leave your Christmas trees out with your trash until Jan. 15. Reader would like to say …. Thank you to two people who helped me on 7th street to get up after I slipped on the ice.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

It’s my wife’s birthday. This morning when she woke up, she told me that she dreamt that I got her a diamond necklace for her birthday, and asked if her dream could mean anything. I assured her that she’d find out later today. She’s gonna love the book I bought her about the meaning of dreams.

Sylvie • Natalie • Nathalie Jane in Bonville just wants to say, I AM A LINEMAN. These men/women, can we thank them enough. I think not. They are always on Call, they keep us from freezing our butts off and all our household freezers fridges, plants, etc., we should thank them .... I live in country, and do not have a wood stove. So, all I can hope for is that these highly trained technicians, jump on their horses and head to their nearest corral, and jump up them poles! And as my particular hero, Leo Buscaglia would say. GET OFF YOUR DUFF! Just go to your neighbour and say thanks!!!!! From the Cornwall Police Service: During the month of January, the CPS will be increasing its enforcement efforts surrounding the unlawful use of off-road vehicles. Police will be monitoring city streets and recreational areas, such as parks and bicycle paths, to enforce violations under the Highway Traffic Act. Doe Dubé gratefully thanks the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall for lovingly donating the poinsettias delivered by the Meals-on-Wheels volunteers over the holidays which is still blooming. God bless your service and thoughtfulness.

United Counties to host rural education symposium Feb. 3 NICK SEEBRUCH A comparison of the size of the proposed logistics hub when compared to the village of Long Sault in yellow.

Residents offer feedback on logistics hub NICK LAURIN

CORNWALL, Ontario – The United Counties of SD&G have announced that they will host a symposium on rural education on Feb. 3, 2022. This symposium is the latest follow-up step after the United Counties had a report written on the state of rural education in SD&G by Horizon Educational Consultants of Ottawa. The report, released in November of 2021 identified several barriers to improving rural education including: a lack of available information for the public from school boards, lack of diversity in school board leadership, lack of adequate internet, low birthrate and declining enrollment, a lack of student voices, parent advocacy being the only way to promote

change, limited housing stock in the region and more. “We encourage everyone interested in education for our children to take this opportunity to find out more and advocate for the changes necessary to ensure that Ontario’s educational system is equitable for all students,” said United Counties of SDG CAO Tim Simpson. The presentations will be broadcast live on the United Counties of SD&G YouTube channel from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The keynote speaker for the event will be Paul Bennett, author and Director of the Schoolhouse Institute and Adjunct Professor of Education at Dalhousie University who will also be taking part in a roundtable discussion after the conclusion of presentations. The rountable discussion will be moderated by Erik Lockhart of Queen’s University.
