SVTC presents Nunsense Cast members of SVTC’s production of Nunsense. Submitted photo.
CORNWALL, Ontario - “People need something fun to go to” commented Lacie Petrynka, director of the comedy musical Nunsense which will open on Feb 11 at the Seaway Valley Theatre Company on Sixth Street in Cornwall. The play, with the book, lyrics and music written by Dan Goggin, is a full musical with a live band, sing and choreographed dancing in the SVTC production. Petrynka explained Nunsense was to have been performed in 2020, but Covid-19 precautions and restrictions necessitated it being cancelled. Fast forward to 2021 when the SVTC production of The Sound of Music was postponed and the decision to perform Nunsense in replacement was made. Nunsense rehearsals began in December 2021, with Petrynka mentioning with a planned opening in February, there was not a lot of time for people to learn the lines, songs, and dance numbers for the play. She was impressed with the dedication of all crew members, mentioning the performers rehearsed at home as well as the theatre. There are five cast members, Shelley

She continued there are at least 20 to 25 people involved with the production including producers Lise Richer and Christiane Taylor, musical director Elizabeth Caddell and choreographers Melanie Samis and Stephanie Charette. The pandemic has certainly presented challenges to theatrical productions, with Petrynka explaining the performances will be following all pandemic precautions, with a 50% capacity allowed in the theatre. “We feel very confident we can put on a show in a way that will keep everyone safe and have fun at the same time” she commented. Tickets are $25.00 per person and are available for sale online at svtc.theticketwicket, by phone at 613-933-3998, with all sales final. More information is available at www.svtc.ca. CORNWALL, Ontario – The Prime Square development located at the corner of Pitt and Second streets in Cornwall entered a new phase on Monday, Jan. 31 with the pouring of concrete into what will be the first floor of the five story residential building. Once completed, the building being constructed by Tri-Star Construction will feature 44 residential units and commercial space on the ground floor. “Prime Square will be an amazing place to live – with restaurants and shopping right next door and the waterfront just a short walk away,” said J.C. Godard, President of Tri-Star Construction in a media release from when the project first began over the summer of 2021. Apartments in the building will range in size from between 418 sq. ft. to 790 sq. ft. and Godard explained that rent will be set at an affordable price. The issue of availability of affordable housing in Cornwall was something that Godard said he wanted to address. “We have seen increased demand across our other properties and know that Prime Square apartments will be in demand,” said Godard. “At the same time, we also recognize the need to keep rents affordable and to create a positive living experience for our tenants.” The historic site in the heart of downtown Cornwall was been consistently occupied from 1825 until 1997 when the then King George Hotel was destroyed by fire. The Prime Square development is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

South Stormont Council receives blue box update NICK LAURIN SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario - On January 26, 2022 - The Township of South Stormont received an update on provincial changes across Ontario regarding the Blue Box program during their regular council meeting. The Blue Box program is a waste management system used by Canadian municipalities to collect, and separate household waste materials for the purpose of recycling. ‘’When we did a tour of the GFL plant, I don’t know about everybody else, but I was amazed that they were able to turn all those plastics into actual fertilizer for resale. astonished me, I think it’s a great thing coming down the pipeline’,’ said Deputy Mayor Smith. The update given to the Township was about making producers responsible for the collection, reuse, refurbishment, and recycling of blue box materials. The Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) oversees enforcing these new changes to the program. Producers must meet recycling targets and register with the RPRA to receive collections. This change of responsibility to producers will be effective in Stormont and SDG as of January 1, 2025.

passed the 2022 municipal budget at a special meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 26 with a tax rate increase of 2.9 per cent or $78.03 for a home valued at 176,907 for a total average residential tax bill of 2,769.06 for 2022. Council had been facing an increase of 3.59 per cent, but much of that was reduced by budget items that were removed by administration including $2.7 million for redoing the patio and front steps of the Cornwall Civic Complex, $650,000 for a splashpad at Menard Park, $275,000 to redo the Aquatic Centre Splashpad and more. Over two days, the City’s operating and capital projects budget were presented by
ther changes from Council. “I vote we adopt the budget as presented. It is a fair budget that meets our obligations,” MacDonald said. “We are adding progressive features to life in Cornwall and that we can do it for a 2.9 per cent increase is a tribute to administration.” Councillor Claude McIntosh pointed out that many municipalities across Ontario were seeing budget increases of three per cent or more and he challenged his colleagues to find places to cut. “I have no problem with 2.9. I’m not going to do a victory lap or anything. It is an inflationary budget,” he said. See the full story at www.cornwallseawaynews.com

symptom is the loss of peripheral vision. But as this occurs progressively, it can in fact go unnoticed for a long time. Diagnosing and treating glaucoma: If it’s diagnosed early on, treatments involving medication, eye drops or laser surgery can generally prevent further vision loss. If left untreated, permanent vision loss is likely to occur. Eye doctors are able to check eye pressure and perform other tests to diagnose glaucoma, even when it’s at its earliest stages. For this reason, regular checkups with an eye doctor are the best defence against this disease. If you’re over the age of 40, you should get a complete eye exam every one to two years. Glaucoma: what you need to know
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada, affecting some 300,000 people. It’s been nicknamed the “silent thief of sight,” as noticeable symptoms often don’t appear until vision loss has already begun. However, the subject merits some attention, especially on the part of older Canadians, as the risk of being affected by glaucoma increases with age. What is glaucoma? Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that result in damage to the optic nerve, a part of the eye that carries visual information from the retina to the brain. Primary open-angle glaucoma is by far the most common type. This disease occurs when the eye no longer drains properly. The resulting back up of aqueous fluid, the fluid that hydrates the eyes, puts pressure on the optic nerve. As mentioned, Glaucoma doesn’t typically present symptoms. It develops gradually and painlessly. The first noticeable

Crowd of supporters greet truck convoy in LETTERS nseebruch@seawaynews.media Cornwall If the truckers supported LGBT ... CAROL GODDARD, SPECIAL TO SEAWAY NEWS
CORNWALL, Ontario - The cold weather didn’t deter supporters of the “Truckers for Freedom” convoy from gathering at the Petro Pass gas station on Boundary Road on January 29. A truck cab travels towards the rendezvous point for the trip to Ottawa at the Petro Pass station in Cornwall on January 29. Goddard photo People of all ages lined the entrances to the Petro Pass, cheering as big rigs and other vehicles arrived at the Cornwall staging area. There was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm amongst the crowd with the vehicle drivers blowing their horns as they went back. When the convoy moved out shortly before 10 a.m. supporters once again cheered and waved as the vehicles began the trek to Ottawa. “I couldn’t find a truck to drive, so I came here as an individual to show my support to them” commented local truck driver Jen Booth as the horns honked. She mentioned how she “has had enough of the restrictions”, mentioning how things seem to change day to day before continuing the vaccines were supposed to allow things to re-open and this hasn’t happened. A large donation of supplies for convoy participants, including water, snacks and food were located at the edge of the parking lot. Katrina Elstub, owner of Katrina’s Corner Kitchen in Monkland provided 200 box lunches for convoy participants. When asked, Elstube explained truckers had supported her restaurant and

Bowl for Kids’ Sake…
First of all, lets get the politics out of the way. I’m a card-carrying member of the CPC. The vaccine and testing mandates have NOTHING to do with freedom. It has everything to do with the protection of oneself and everybody else. Covid is a global problem and requires specific management to stop or at least slow the spread to protect the population as much as possible. If this means governmental mandates then they are doing their job to protect us. Those who do not wish to vaccinate or even test are putting their and others health at risk. This is extremely selfish. For governments to enforce mandates is NOT tyrannical or fascist. The author of the “Trucker Convoy” article is obviously ignorant of the realities facing this nation as well as the globe. In exceptional circumstances, like a global pandemic, codes, declarations and charters
need to be put aside to a small degree temporarily for the safety of human kind. If the unvaccinated are concerned about freedom, then they should ask themselves what affect are my decisions having on the freedoms of others. I disagree with some things the Liberal government is doing but I do support Trudeau in his management of this crisis. Yes, he has made mistakes but tell me one, just one leader on this rock we live on who hasn’t. I don’t think there is another person in government who could do a better job at managing the crisis and trying to protect the citizenry. I dislike Trudeau but he has my full support in the current crisis. It is time to put differences aside and support the governing bodies no matter what political stripe to get this country and the globe free of this pestilence. IT IS NOT TYRANNY, FASCISM or DISCRIMINATION. Nicholas Tutllett, South Stormont, Ontario

Greater national events aren’t usually something I would comment on. We are a local newspaper and I like to use this space to comment on local issues. However, the truck convoy that passed through Cornwall on Saturday has both national and local implications. In the week leading up to the event and in the days since I’ve seen fierce local debate on the issue on social media. First of all, let me just say that I believe that if you want to be a part of the conversation, you need to come ready to act like an adult. It is a shame that social media provides a platform for and amplifies the voices of those who act like children, who believe that those they disagree with need to be demeaned or threatened into submission. My perspective on the convoy is that firstly vaccines work, temporary public health restrictions work, and that being asked to endure both of these things is a price I’m willing to pay, a small price. I feel for local business owners who have lost revenue due to these restrictions, but many of those came from Doug Ford at Queen’s Park, and not Justin Trudeau in Ottawa. The stated reason of the convoy going to Ottawa was to protest the vaccine mandate for Canadian truckers, of which, the vast majority are already vaccinated. In fact, the mandate is estimated to affect around 12,000 unvaccinated truckers or roughly 10 per cent of the members of the Canadian Trucking Alliance. Let me also say that COVID-19 vaccines are safe. According to the U.S. Centre for Disease Control 0.0022 per cent of individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine died after the shot was
administered. Keep in mind hundreds of millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the U.S. and that while these small numbers of deaths may have occurred after a vaccine was given that is not the same as the vaccine being the cause of death so the percentage of deaths is likely lower. Vaccines work and the data shows us that they work. While some may point out that the number of vaccinated individuals who have been hospitalized might seem high, keep in mind that as a percentage of the vaccinated population, the number that wind up in the hospital is relatively low, while as a percentage, the number of unvaccinated who wind up in the hospital is relatively high. These Canadian truckers are also not being forced to take the vaccine, they can choose not to take it, but they would have to self-isolate, under go testing and other restrictions upon entry to the country for the protection of Canadian residents who they might come into contact with. The original message of this convoy that left from Cornwall on Saturday morning has clearly been drowned out by individuals associated with it who performed some childish, hateful, and in some cases violent acts. From what I have seen, individuals associated with this protest on Saturday were carrying swastikas, Confederate flags, disrespected the Terry Fox Memorial, defaced the National War Memorial, defecated on the lawns of homes where the Pride flag was flying, carried transphobic signage and threatened violence against the Prime Minister. Let me be clear that while I’m sure this was a minority of those who supported the truck protest, none of this is okay and no one who participated in any of the above deserves to be a part of the public discourse. I am not a fan of Donald Trump or what

Some of you out there have been living on Facebook too much. Some of you have been putting yourself in self-imposed quarantine because you had a runny nose last week. Some of you are hiding in fear of the imminent End Times. You’ve lost the basic skills of cursive writing, shucking corn on the cob, doing sums, mending socks, reciting the seven-times tables and doing long division. And now, I finally get to the point of this week’s lament: hardly anyone, neither the little kids, nor the teens, not even the adults, are making snowpeople these days. Before Global Warming completely eliminates all vestiges of snow on Earth, I’d like to see the art of crafting snowpeople be revived. To achieve this,
here’s the recipe for creating a snowperson. It must be followed meticulously. Due to lobbying, the term ‘snowman’ must never be written or spoken. INGREDIENTS: 50 liters of water (unprocessed, from St. Lawrence River); one carrot; two chunks of charcoal; one cheery hat; one banana; two deciduous branches; three buckets [small, medium and large]; one mug. RECIPE: When temperature is -20C or below, wind is less than 3 km/h fill mug with water 250 times. Hurl contents of each mug into the air. Contents will fall to earth in the form of snow. Gather snow into the three buckets. Press firmly into the shape of each bucket. Turn each bucket upside-down. Place contents of largest bucket on ground. Place contents of medium bucket on top of contents of largest bucket. Place contents of small bucket on top of contents of medium bucket. OPTIONAL: If appearance of obesity or pregnancy is preferred, place largest bucket on top of medium bucket. Modify shape of contents of each bucket, based on personal preferences. Insert carrot (nose) horizontally
he stands for, but I would never wish him physical harm. Adults speak with respect, and they do not name call or threaten violence and those that do should not be respected or listened to. All of that being said, I’m left wondering what this protest was really about and what it wanted to accomplish. Was it really a protest to protect a small number of individuals from getting a vaccine that is safe? Or against vaccine mandates, which are nothing new in recent medical history? If not those things, then what? Unlike social media, newspapers are a place where clean public discourse can be had on issues in the form of Letters to the Editor. One thing I’ve learned when it comes to staging a protest is this: Go big or stay home. Good example is the protest by hundreds of truckers – and the usual troublesome hangers-on – that morphed into a take-over of Ottawa’s downtown, forcing businesses, many struggling to stay afloat, to close while making it almost impossible for non-protesters to get through the downtown core. The sideshow included a handful of idiots doing a happy dance on the tomb of the unknown soldier, messing around with the Terry Fox statue, invading the busy Rideau Centre and causing a major disruption at a downtown mission/shelter for homeless folks. All, of course, in the name of freedom. How can this happen? It is all about numbers. Protesting 101. The bigger the crowd, the longer the rope granted by those in charge of enforcing the laws. Imagine if you and a handful of folks decided to shutdown Wellington Street in front of the Parliament Buildings for even a couple of hours, let a huge chunk of the downtown core, for three days? It would be good-morning judge, real quick. Ottawa police – backed up by squads from the OPP, RCMP and Toronto – took a ho-hum, what-can-you-do position. The Ottawa chief, looking like a weak-kneed wimp, went on TV to say that since nobody had been killed or hurt he didn’t want to “throw fuel on the fire.” That has to be music to the ears of every radical group in the country. In fairness to the police, they know that a wholesale crackdown would invited violence and condemnation from the cop-bashing
crowd, some of whom are embedded in the legal profession and think social workers should replace the police. Hey, I’ve got an idea. Why not take a page from the defund-the-cops handbook. Send in the social workers to have a “discussion” with the protesters. THIS MONTH CIRCA 1962 Cornwall General Hospital administrator Frank Silversides said the new Ontario Hospital Insurance Act (aka universal health care) that provided free health care to all citizens was responsible for a growing shortage of hospital beds in the city. Even with a combined 434 beds, Cornwall’s two hospitals – Hotel Dieu and General – were struggling to find beds for patients. At the Dieu, with 266 beds, the number of people waiting for a bed was 70. Over at the General, with 168 beds, the wait list had 40 names. In addition, the General had an annex at the St. Lawrence Sanatorium with 46 beds, while Macdonell Memorial had 118 beds. Both were used for chronically ill patients. Hospital official said that despite the shortage of beds, they could handle emergencies. The administrator noted that the new health care system did not cover out-patient visits, thus the trend to move people into beds covered by public health-care insurance. The plan did not cover more than one procedure during the same hospital stay. His suggestion: If you can afford it, buy into a private health care plan to cover the “extras.” He said another downside of the universal plan was that government control over how hospitals functioned had increased to the point of absolute management by the ministry of health. ALSO THIS MONTH 1962 The familyowned Charlebois Beverages bottling plant on Baldwin Avenue was destroyed by an early-morning blaze. Four delivery trucks and all equipment were lost. Le Conseil de South Stormont reçoit une mise à jour du program blue box NICK LAURIN
10 - Le mercredi 2
fevrier, 2022 - Cornwall Express - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

quality of life possible,” said Jim McDonell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “We need to meet the long-term care needs of today and the future.” Sandfield Place in Cornwall will be getting 75 new long-term care beds and 53 upgraded beds, while the new Lancaster facility will be receiving 68 new beds and 60 upgraded beds. “The Township of South Glengarry is extremely pleased and proud to see the investment in more long-term care beds for Lancaster,” said Lyle Warden, Mayor of South Glengarry. “This project provides more choices for seniors to live in our community as long as our residents wish. Part of our strategic plan is improving quality of life in our community. Today’s

announcement is an exciting step towards further improving life for seniors and their families in our Township. We are also very grateful for the ongoing commitment of the Ontario government to modernize long-term care.” The new beds for Sandfield Place will be included in a new facility to be built at 10 Laurie Place, which is expected to begin construction in the spring of 2023. Construction of the new Lancaster Facility is planned to begin in the fall of 2023. “The additional long-term care beds will assist with a recognized need in our community,” said Glen Grant, Mayor of the City of Cornwall. “We want to thank the provincial government for recognizing and reacting to the long-term care needs in our community.”

These announced new and upgraded longterm care beds are just the latest in a series of long-term care funding announcements that have been announced in the region over the past four-to-five years. In all, in recent years 333 new and 627 upgraded long-term care beds have been announced in Cornwall and the surrounding United Counties of SD&G. “Our government has a plan to fix long-term care and a key part of that plan is building modern, safe, and comfortable homes for our seniors,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Long-Term Care. “When these two homes are completed, they will be places for seniors in Cornwall and Lancaster to call home, near their friends and family.”

Why did councillor Justin Towndale not make a few motions to cut spending from the budget? He sat back, waited until the vote then declares he wanted to review for more cuts? Did he not have two weeks to talk to admin and get answers then propose cuts? Weak answer from a guy who wants to be mayor. And what’s up with councillor Bergeron? Has he given up on this term …you would have expected more from him.
