All tenants at Cumberland Gardens receive eviction notices
The irony and opportunity of healthcare fundraising
NICK SEEBRUCH
When Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill came out in 1995, its fourth single, “Íronic” climbed the charts to become the artist’s biggest hit. Hotly debated since the single reached smash-hit status, is whether or not the situations featured in the song are ironic, or just (like rain on your wedding day) unfortunate. To avoid the same mistake in this month’s column, I double-checked the MerriamWebster Dictionary and confirmed irony’s meaning as “an incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result…”. So, what does irony have to do with healthcare fundraising? Well, the very concept supporting Canada’s system – universal healthcare – can make fundraising harder. If healthcare in Canada is universally covered, why would we need to fundraise? Don’t our taxes pay for hospitals, equipment, and services? Thanks to the idea of universal healthcare, most of us expect healthcare costs to be covered by government funds. But reality doesn’t match our expectations since government funding doesn’t cover all medical equipment at our hospitals. At CCH, the Ontario Government funds over 80% of all costs; however, the hospital must cover remaining expenses to serve local patients. Parking fees, cafeteria proceeds and other revenue, like private room fees, go towards these expenses. The rest must be supported by community fundraising. Local donors have contributed an impressive array of equipment at CCH that would not exist if we relied on government funding alone. Ontario hospitals that can’t raise their own funds may wait months or years to provide extra services falling outside of government provisions. So, supporters of

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mississauga based Bedford Properties and Estates Ltd. issued eviction notices to approximately 100 tenants living at Cumberland Gardens on Cumberland St. in Cornwall on Saturday, Feb. 26. “You may be aware that the building has been in disrepair for many years,” reads the eviction letter sent to all tenants. “Therefore, we have no choice but to terminate your lease effective June 30, 2022. Attached you will see the appropriate N9 and N13 form issued by the Landlord Tenant Board.” Residents living in Cumberland Gardens were shocked and upset at the news they received Saturday. Social media in Cornwall was soon flooded with messages from those looking for support and direction on what to do next. Seaway News spoke to some of the tenants living in Cumberland Gardens. “It is still hard to talk about,” said Madison Bennett, who has lived in a four-bedroom apartment in Cumberland Gardens since 2020. “I just think of the residents who have lived here for 20 years and have raised their families here.” Bennett explained that from her perspective, the buildings at Cumberland Gardens were not in such a state of disrepair as to require the eviction of tenants. She explained that in fact, her apartment had brand new
floors put in when she moved in in 2020. Bennett expressed concerns over whether tenants living in Cumberland Gardens will be able to find new homes to rent. She said that after a quick search on Sunday, she found 74 units available for rent in Cornwall. “They are going to have to pay so much more for a place for their families,” she said. “This isn’t right.” Bennett said that she and her family would be moving out of Cumberland Gardens as soon as possible. “I don’t feel comfortable living in a place with a landlord that would do this to so many people,” she said. Choosing a walk-in bathtub
A walk-in bathtub can reduce your risk of falling and make your personal hygiene routine easier to manage. Here’s what you need to do to choose the right model. Determine your needs There are many different types of walk-in bathtubs. To narrow down your choices, you must first determine if you require a model that’s wheelchair accessible, has a low edge or allows you to sit or lie down. In addition, the width of the door and the direction it opens, either in or out, should be key considerations. Consider size and comfort When choosing a walk-in tub, it’s important to think about the size and shape of your bathroom. The dimensions of the available space will allow you to determine which models will work best. In any case, measuring your bathroom will prevent you from purchasing a bathtub that doesn’t fit. Select the required accessories In addition to the tub itself, you may want to consider installing your bathtub with water jets, mobility aids, a retractable bench, a quick-drain system, a non-slip coating or an anti-scald valve. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask a bathtub retailer for recommendations. After reviewing your needs, they’ll be able to suggest a model that

our Hospital Foundation truly help us make local healthcare better. One way community members support CCHF is through monthly donations. For the donor, monthly giving is convenient and rewarding. For our charity, these donations provide a more predictable revenue stream, and reduced administration since monthly gifts are often automated. Some benefits to monthly giving include: • The ability to set a charitable budget and watch your gift grow over time – it’s far less painful to give $10 a month than to spend $120 at Christmas, but it helps the charity all the same. • The convenience of one charitable receipt combining all donations for the year, received ahead of tax season. • A proactive approach to help with unsolicited asks. There are so many worthy charities, it can be hard to decline any. Having a ready answer like “I’ve budgeted X amount for charities and have already committed my gifts for the year,” can be useful to manage your budget. Be proactive. Find out about the charities you support. Pick the causes that really resonate with you. And if you can, consider monthly donations. CORNWALL, Ontario - Big Brothers/ Big Sisters (BBBS) Cornwall has hired a new Executive Director, Pierre-Luc Byham. Byham started in his new job the week of Feb. 14, replacing former Executive Director Ron Graham who left the position earlier this year to pursue other opportunities. Byham, a native of Vankleek Hill, went to high school in Hawkesbury and graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BA with Honours in Communications and a minor in History. Currently, Byham is half-way through a course for a Management certificate from Ottawa U. For 10 years from 2011 to 2021 Byham worked as the Executive Director of the Hawkesbury General Hospital Foundation. After a brief stint working at a bank, Byham applied for and was hired by BBBS Cornwall. “I missed the mission and the work of the non-profit sector,” Byham said. “It feels good to know that you are making a difference in the community.” Byham, while never having been a Big or Little Brother himself, is excited to lead this organization and said that his main focus is finding more people to volunteer as Bigs for their program. “COVID related isolation has been really tough on kids and we’ve seen the difference having a Big in their lives can make,” he said.

Renovictions
I write this letter out of solidarity with the families and seniors at Cumberland Gardens who were served notice this weekend that they will be losing their homes to renovictions. I am writing to urge all who read this letter to use their voices to advocate on behalf of these tenants, and others in our region and community, who are being preyed upon by profiteering companies like Bedford Properties; this company is evicting several hundred people in Cumberland Gardens complex under the pretext that these units require massive renovations. The reality is, they, and companies like them, are notorious for committing these evictions, doing basic repairs, and relisting the units at huge increases. Two minutes on Google showed me several news articles where Bedford’s practices have been occurring across southern Ontario, and have even been addressed in the Ontario legislature. Our community members are just the latest victims. At a time when rents are skyrocketing and the supply of new housing, and affordable housing, is extremely limited, this is a recipe for extreme housing insecurity, unsafe living conditions, and homelessness. The

I am so angry, sad and horrified about Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and I am worried he’ll move on to attacking Lithuania and the other Baltics. Lithuanians know too well what living under Russian domination felt like as they endured it from 1940 to 1990. I saw it first hand in 1989 when I first visited my Dad’s birthplace. I saw his sadness at not being able to freely visit his family and homeland. My Lithuanian cousins told me stories about how hard it had been even if their parents did their best to shield them. There were food lines for insufficient food, lack of simple

newest housing project in Cornwall will do little to fill the void in affordable housing if landlord corporations are continued to be allowed to buy up properties and evict the entire community with little pretext or proof of required renovations. While the local legal aid office scrambles to support those most affected by this and earlier renovictions in our community, we the citizens must use our voices to help. Write to our MPP Mr McDonell, write to the city council, and write to the ministry of municipal affairs and housing and MPP Steve Clark. Urge them to advocate for diligence at the landlord and tenant council over renovictions. Urge them to pass requirements in the legislature to ensure flipping housing complexes requires more consideration of the tenants. The people of Cumberland Gardens deserve better from our leaders. They deserve safe housing and secure housing. After two years of global learning disruption, the Ontario Government announced the highest investment in public education in its history to support students’ learning recovery and mental health support. Ontario’s Learning Recovery Action Plan is a five-point plan to
strengthen learning recovery in reading and math, anchored by the largest provincial investment in tutoring supports, summer learning and mental health. The government outlined investments that will bridge learning gaps, support academic success, and focus on overall mental health and wellness. The $26.6 billion plan includes a $683.9 million increase in Grants for Student Needs (GSN) funding, and $90 million in total mental health investments, representing a 420 percent increase in funding since 2017-18. To help students recover from the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, $175 million is being invested to expand access to free publicly funded tutoring in small groups after
school, during school, on weekends and over the summer. This province-wide program will start in April and continue until December 31, 2022, to ensure students can catch up. The Ontario government is calling on citizens 16 years of age and older to help their communities in times of crisis by joining Volunteer Corps Ontario. The new program will register, screen and train volunteers so Ontario is better prepared to mobilize volunteers and safely respond to emergencies, from public health crises to natural disasters. We want to harness that Spirit by establishing Volunteer Corps Ontario to ensure we are prepared and ready to respond when the next emergency comes and requires everyday
heroes to once again stand tall and support each other. The new Volunteer Corps Ontario database will be made available to ministries, municipalities, First Nation communities and NGOs in need of emergency volunteers so they can respond quickly and consistently should an emergency arise. Ontarians can register online at volunteercorps.gov.on.ca. Volunteers from all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to register. All volunteers would be required to take online foundational courses prior to deployment. Finally, we are again following through on our promise to make life more affordable by eliminating the vehicle sticker renewal fees, saving $120 annually for drivers.
Ontario eliminating licence plate stickers NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
ONTARIO - The province of Ontario has announced that it will be eliminating license plate stickers and their associated fees. Announced on Tuesday, Feb. 22 the change will affect passenger vehicles, light trucks, motorcycles and mopeds and will come into effect on March 13. For those who have bought a license plate sticker, they may be eligible for a refund. Individuals who have paid license plate renewal fees since March of 2020 will be receiving a cheque in the mail starting at the end of next month through to the end of April. “As the cost of living continues to go up, our government is cutting costs for families to make life more affordable,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Eliminating the fee to renew your licence plate and refunding the cost of doing
so for the past two years is a concrete way we can put and keep more money in the pockets of hard-working Ontarians.” To be eligible, drivers will have to make sure that there are no outstanding fees, fines or tolls against their vehicle and that their address with Service Ontario is up to date. Housing issue a lot bigger than Cumberland Gardens NICK SEEBRUCH
8 - Wednesday, March 2, 2022
- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
Cornwall’s housing issue once again became top of mind this weekend when the residents of the 100 units at Cumberland Gardens received notices of eviction. The landlord of the proper ty, Mississauga based Bedford Properties and Estates Ltd. said that it was their intention to renovate all of the units. Bedford purchased the property at the end of last year, and likely hope to increase their profits on the property by reselling it or by increasing rents. I don’t necessarily blame Bedford for doing this. We live in a capitalist country, they are a business, and they are trying to maximize their profits. They are not doing anything illegal on first glance, although it might be a little heartless for the people who live there. What the situation at Cumberland Gardens truly represents is how urgent the housing issue in Cornwall truly is right now. Nearly 100 residential units will be
taken off the market for the duration of the renovations and those living there will need to find alternative accommodations. A quick search on Kijiji shows that there are less than 100 residential units currently on the rental market. The price for a two-bedroom apartment is roughly $1,500 a month. This summer, for the first time in my living memory and in the memory of others, homelessness became a visible problem in Cornwall. We saw a small encampment of homeless individuals living on Cornwall’s waterfront. I’ve seen individuals sleeping on sidewalks and sleeping on benches. We had a one-day homelessness survey conducted that showed on that on one day in the Cornwall area in October of 2021 there were 77 people who identified themselves as being homeless. We officially have a serious problem with housing in Cornwall and the surrounding area. There are not enough residential units available for rent, and the ones that are for rent are often not
affordable for people who are from Cornwall. The City of Cornwall needs to consider drastic moves to deal with this problem and come up with creative solutions. Solutions like actively and aggressively buying real estate. If you are searching for a place to rent, you might notice that multiple entire homes are for rent in Cornwall. These properties are being bought up by large real estate companies from major cities. I know this because I know people who have been trying to buy houses in Cornwall, only to see those houses snatched up by corporations coming in with cash offers. Companies are buying homes and putting them on the rental market for high prices, pushing the average cost of rent
up and up. Cornwall as a city needs to get into this market. Buy some of these homes, rent them at affordable prices. Not only would this move be good for those who are in desperate need of housing but it is a good investment for the Cornwall taxpayer as well. There is not enough housing stock in Cornwall. It will still be years before the local housing bubble bursts. The market hasn’t peaked yet and once it does, hopefully the crisis around the lack of housing will have passed and the city can then re-sell these real estate investments. What do you think readers? How would you solve the lack of housing in the city? Email me your Letters to the Editor at nseebruch@seawaynews.media
Adjustment is a two-way street Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words
NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
When I moved from Toronto to Eastern Ontario 1975, it took me a while to adjust. Actually, quite a while. The way local place names were spelled indicated that the education level of the Department of Highways sign makers was quite lacking. They got the name of one of the Big Three auto manufacturers and the village of Chrysler and the War of 1812 battle site so wrong! Similarly, L’Original, the village the Ottawa River, upstream from Hawkesbury, was misspelled as L’Orignal. I assume it was named after one of the teachings of the Catholic Church, original sin.
Local pronunciations are as quirky as the spellings. When I heard of St. ‘Raffles’ church, I said to myself, “Why not St. ‘Bingo’ or St. ‘Lottery’ or St. ‘Auction’?” By the time I finally located it, the building was in ruins. Pronunciation of family names puzzled me too. Only years later did I learn that our nextdoor neighbours, the ‘Krikkas’, were the Chrétiens. Benoit became ‘Ben-oyt’. ‘Wolochatiuk’ was too much of a tongue-twister for most. As an aviation enthusiast, I soon located Cornwall Regional Airport (CYCC), but was intrigued that somewhere nearby there could be yet another airpor t, known as ‘Summerstown Airport’. In Williamstown, family names seemed to be in short supply. Just about everyone was a Macdonald, or a McDonald, or McDonnell. I was hailed at the crossroads by a FedEx driver. Showing me a parcel, he asked, “Can you
help me? I’ve a delivery for these folks. Do you know where they live?” I’m sure you can guess what the name was. Shrugging, I suggested, “Across the street there’s Alex’s store. He could probably give you directions.” When the Seaway Project of late-1950s raised the river level above the Cornwall dam, it became possible to siphon water off at Long Sault into the South Branch of the Raisin River, which joins the main Raisin River immediately south of Williamstown. This has increased the flow of the South Branch from a trickle all the way up to a ‘trickle plus a wee more trickle’. Some of the Williamstown locals were convinced that the Raisin would become a parallel Seaway, putting the sleepy village on the map. Today, the South Branch is still a trickle. Check it out: Brookdale, just south of the 401; Pitt St., a stone’s throw north of Tollgate;
TIGHT FIT! – If the rumoured “South Branch Raisin Seaway” had become a reality, the 730’ x 75’ freighters would have had difficulty transiting Bob MacDonald’s covered bridge. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)
Boundary Rd., immediately south of Grants Corners. I’m still adjusting to localisms, but I’ve tried to introduce some changes in local ways and lore through my classroom teaching and my ‘Dances With Words’ weekly soapbox.

The day after the Ruskies started heaving rockets at the Ukraine, superstar Alex Ovechkin, the face of modern Russian shinny, came out of hiding to say he was against war. “No war,” he said. “Nyet.” What he didn’t say was that his buddy Vlady Putin should call off his bloodhounds. He stick handled around questions about his close ties to the former KGB agent and his much publicized admiration of the Russian strongman. Ovechkin said that he didn’t want to get involved in politics. Not so. In the 2018 Russian presidential election, Ovechkin campaigned for Putin. He organized a support group called TeamPutin. The two have, for years, had a warm and fuzzy relationship. Even after Putin steam rolled Crimea in 2014. The day after the invasion of the Ukraine, Ovechkin’s Instagram still had a photo of himself with his favourite ruthless dictator whom he campaigned for in the 2018 Russian presidential election. He organized a support group called TeamPutin. They have a warm and fuzzy relationship. Yet, he said he doesn’t want to get involved in politics. (Another member of the Putin Admiration Society is U.S. actor Steven Seagal who once called the Russian president “One of the great living world leaders.” Seagal holds an honourary Russian citizenship granted by Putin.) As one New York hockey writer noted, Alex Ovechkin is playing both sides of the fence when it comes to the invasion and war in the Ukraine. Depending on how this war plays out, with all the sanctions and everything, Ovechkin might have trouble getting a work visa to return to North America next
hockey season. He spends the off season in Russia, where his U.S. greenbacks (he earns $10 million a season with a personal wealth of $80M) go a lot farther than the ruble. Ovechkin numbers make him a solid bet for hall of fame honours. And while his magnificent stats make him worthy, the support of a ruthless dictator, now the world’s most hated person, should keep him out. If they can keep Pete Rose out of the baseball hall for betting on games, embracing a murderous pal should lock the door. Just a thought: Wouldn’t it be interesting if Grapes were still part of Hockey Night in Canada and offering his take on the Ovechkin-Putin mutual admiration society. Don’t think the hockey powers would have a big enough muzzle to restrain him. ___________________________________ HERE AND THERE: Has anybody filed a missing person’s report on Maxime Bernier, founder and leader of the upstart ultra-right wing People’s Party of Canada (PPC)? Good on Councillor Justin Towndale on putting forward a motion for the City of Cornwall to condemn the Russian war against Ukraine. WOMEN LEADING THE CORNWALL COMMUNITY NICK LAURIN CORNWALL, ON - International Women’s Day is on March 8, and is a day where the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women are celebrated. According to UN Women, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘’Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’’, to recognize the contribution, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all. Seaway News asked prominent women in our community questions about their careers, and their inspirations. Maureen Adams, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Cornwall, told Seaway News about a co-worker she worked with at Nissan. “During my career at Nissa, there was a Director (Robin) at North American that continuously inspired me. She was very strategic and was able to influence her superiors and have an impact on our North American business operations. During my last trip to Los
Angeles, a group took me out for dinner and Robin ordered a Canadian beer in recognition of a Canadian colleague. As our discussion during the evening continued, you appreciate that she is a mother, wife, and daughter on top of a very demanding career. I would always want to aspire to be just like she was.”, said Adams to Seaway News. Shawna Spowart, Chief of the Cornwall Police Service, told Seaway News about facing challenges in her career from being a woman. “This is a very interesting question for me
because my answer to it over the years has changed. When I was younger, I think I was so focused on what I needed to do to prove myself that I didn’t worry about these kinds of challenges. I experienced every situation as a woman, through the lens of a woman. I didn’t know anything different. Looking back, I believe that as a woman, there were times when I was required to prove myself even more than others,” Spowart said. “I can see that now, but in a way I am glad that I didn’t let that interfere with my own learning and
progression. In my role as a community leader who is a woman, it’s important for me to ensure that the women of today work in an environment where they are treated with equality in terms of the respect and opportunities that they so deserve.” Juliette Labossière, Executive Director, United Way/Centraide Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, told Seaway News about her career choice. “I always knew I wanted to do work that would benefit others, advocate for the rights of those that don’t feel they have a voice and make the world a better place. Working for the UWC SDG allows me the privilege of being surrounded by passionate, community-minded individuals that inspire me daily to find better solutions to the complex issues that plague our community. I am one of the lucky ones that wakes up every morning and is excited by what challenges the day will hold and what possibilities will come from them. My work is a passion, a love letter to my community, not a chore,” she said. For more informations on this year’s International Women’s Day, visit https://www. internationalwomensday.com.

Women in politics: advice for getting started An increased presence of women in government has been associated with a number of benefits, from improved confidence in democratic institutions to greater public spending on health and education. Here’s some advice for women who want to get into politics. FIND A CAUSE AND START LOCAL Reflect on the problems that affect your community and how you could fix them if you were in government. 4 tips to avoid discrimination in a job interview Are you a recruiter, employer or manager that needs to interview applicants for a current job opening? If so, here are four tips to ensure you ask non-discriminatory questions and behave impartially when choosing a candidate. 1. AVOID THE PERSONAL You should never ask an applicant about their age, ethnicity, family situation, romantic relationship, religion, gender or sexual orientation in a job interview. However, this doesn’t mean the candidate can’t bring up these topics up on their own. 2. TARGET YOUR QUESTIONS Instead of asking the applicant personal questions to gain insight into their abilities, focus on the require-
ments needed for the job. For example, rather than directly addressing the applicant’s family situation, ask if they’re available to work evenings and weekends. 3. PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME Write out all your questions in advance. This will prevent you from improvising and accidentally formulating a question that could be interpreted as discriminatory. Carefully choose your words so you’ll get the information you need about each candidate. 4. BE CONSISTENT Make sure you ask each applicant the same questions. For example, you could create a scoring grid to fill out at each interview. This will also give you an overview of the candidates’ answers and help you make the right

“In my personal experience, it was a significant downgrade for my mom to be moved from non-profit care to for-profit care. Naturally they would have a bare minimum staff, because they have to turn a profit,” said Rainer Pethke. “For my mom that means they sometimes call late in the afternoon and say ‘I’m sorry, but we don’t have anyone available today,’ when they were supposed to be there for breakfast. This happened consecutively for a number of days.” Michael Hurley, President of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions and First VicePresident of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario spoke on Ontario’s current problems with hospital capacity, and the disadvantages of moving towards a privatized healthcare system. “Ontario’s got a tremendous capacity problem in healthcare. It has the least number of hospitals and staff. Not only of any province in Canada, but of any country in the OECD, and any country with a developed economy. In long-term care, it’s got the second least capacity of any province in this country,” said Michael Hurley.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ontario Health Coalition held a Zoom presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 23 to raise awareness for their campaign to fight back against what they perceive as health care privatization by the provincial government and for urgently needed improvements in our public, non-profit healthcare system. The presentation started by showing the audience a clip of Christine Elliott, Deputy
Premier of Ontario speaking to the press about privatization. “To continue we’re opening up pediatrics surgeries, cancer screenings, making sure that we can elect independent health facilities to operate, and private hospitals,” Elliott said.
