First SkiFest a success at Summerstown Trails
Raisin River Canoe Race returns April 10
NICK LAURIN
NICK SEEBRUCH
SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - This past weekend, the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) hosted its first ever SkiFest, a cross-country ski event for participants for all age groups, and skill levels. The races offered by SkiFest were split into two days, with Saturday being races for adults, and Sunday for children. The Saturday races were ‘‘loppet’’ style, ranging distances from 2.6km to 20km, with a total of 50 people who participated. René Sauvé, FOTST race organizer, explains the term ‘‘loppet’’ as “a gathering of skiers who ski on specifically groomed trails.” This style of racing is popular globally, with some having thousands of participants. The Sunday races for kids between the ages of 6 to 13, had tracks with distances ranging from 600m to 1.6km, and had a total of 21 participants. Nine-year old Kai Van Rossum said that “She liked the hot chocolate, and the food

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Skifest was publicized to FOTST members only;however, FOTST president Vic Leroux is already thinking about next year’s Skifest, and looking forward to inviting the general public.
SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - After a two-year hiatus, the 49th Raisin River Canoe Race returns this April 10. The Raisin River Canoe race was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race, which is one of the longest races in eastern Ontario, sees hundreds of canoers from across Ontario and the country come to ride 30km of the Raisin River from St. Andrews West in South Stormont to Williamstown in South Glengarry. “Ever since the first Raisin River Canoe Race in 1973, the event has been like a rite of spring for both residents and visitors to the area,” said RRCA Canoe Race Coordinator, Lissa Deslandes. “Thanks to the support from many local organizations and sponsors, as well as the Race Safety Committee, the RRCA has been able to continuously coordinate a successful race

Cape is Back in 2022 CAROL GODDARD Cornwall – Cornwall Area Pop Event, known to thousands as CAPE, will be returning to the Benson Centre in Cornwall on April 22 and April 23, 2022. The last event was held in the spring of 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 events cancelled because of pandemic restrictions. Organized by Randy and Carol Sauve, CAPE

Randy explained the event was so successful, the decision was made to extend CAPE to a two-day event the following year. He continued attendance has always been good, noting it reached just under six thousand people one year. Both Randy and Carol anticipate a well attended CAPE 2022, with Carol commenting

As the eyes of the world turn towards Ukraine and the Russian aggression now launched, the first and best thing we can do is fall to our knees in prayer. We’re not as powerless as it may seem! “Lord, we thank you that in every situation and every dark moment, you are active and working among us. Even when things seem at their bleakest, we trust in your sovereignty and strength. In John 16:33 you said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” We rest in the knowledge that you have the power to move in any and every situation. God, we pray fervently for the people of Ukraine. The situation they now face is not an entirely new one. The name Ukraine translates to “borderland,” and this nation has been viewed for centuries as just that - a bordering land waiting to be conquered. They have 6 bordering countries, and have seen struggles with Russia for a century. Over 13,000 have already died in the small-scale war that has been raging in the south-eastern area of Ukraine since 2014. We ask that the people of Ukraine may be secure, and that they would know not only peace on earth but your true and unwav-

ering peace. We Pray for World Leaders. Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king’s heart is like a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he wills.” We pray this now, that you would work in the hearts of world leaders and diplomats, and incline them toward peace. We ask, God, that you would move their hearts towards peace; that an alternative to war could be found and that you would be honored in it. We Pray for the many Christian Workers in Ukraine. There are a great number of missionaries, pastors, and other leaders remaining in-country serving the Ukrainian people. We ask for their protection, and that they be able to freely continue serving you and the people around them. As it has been seen elsewhere, may this time of unrest and persecution serve to promote the Gospel in ways we can’t yet imagine. We believe that you can do more than we ask or imagine, and it is in this confidence that we ask these things in your name. Amen!” Pastor Jim

Getting out of your comfort zone
Are you a homebody? Are you stuck in a monotonous routine? If so, here are three ways you can push yourself to step out of your comfort zone. 1. Challenge yourself Don’t let your everyday routine get stale. If you enjoy going for daily walks, see if you can go further or faster. If you love making art, experiment with a different style or techni que to push the limits of your creativity. 2. Change up your routine Do you mindlessly go through the motions of your day? To keep things fresh, try visiting a new place, signing up for a class or striking up a conversation with a friendly stranger. 3. Stay curious If you’re interested in learning about another culture or have always wanted to take up a hobby, go for it. It’s important to stay curious
Ross Video cuts business ties to Russia Perkins store joins Groupe BMR Efforts. NICK SEEBRUCH nseebruch@seawaynews.media
IROQUOIS, Ontario - South Dundas business Ross Video has announced that it has cut all business ties to Russia and has given a donation in support of Ukraine. This announcement comes during the ongoing Russian attack on Ukraine. The company announced on Wednesday, March 2 that it has ceased all shipments of its equipment to Russia and has discontinued support for equipment already in use in the country. Ross Video provides services for live, and broadcast video production with offices around the world. Since Russia’s invasion into sovereign Ukrainian territory, Ross Video’s CEO David Ross, who claims Ukrainian heritage has donated $100,000 to Ukraine Humanitarian Relief
“As a company, we rarely comment on geopolitical affairs. However, we are compelled to support the Ukrainian people and their remarkable efforts to defend their homeland,” said David Ross, CEO Ross Video. “Like hundreds of thousands of other Canadians, I am proud of my Ukrainian heritage. I simply cannot sit idly by while President Putin’s forces attack cities, civilians, and democracy itself.” Ross has encouraged fellow Canadian CEOs to help and donate to Ukraine. “I encourage other Canadian business leaders, and anyone who has the means to condemn this invasion and to provide meaningful financial support to Ukraine. Together, we can make a difference and send a strong message to President Putin and those still supporting him,” he said.

Why not hop on a Cornwall Transit bus this month? IT’S A FACT! FRANCIS RACINE CITY OF CORNWALL
My name is Francis and I’m the City of Cornwall’s new Communications Officer. Prior to working for the City, I covered local news as a reporter with a handful of local publications. Hence, when I found out that I had to write
monthly columns for the Seaway News, I was pretty excited. Through these columns, I hope to help you understand some of the services that the City offers to you, its residents. In today’s column, I’ll be focusing on an interesting service we have here in town — Cornwall Transit. When was the last time you took a Cornwall Transit bus? If you happen to be like me, the answer may be never. Well, I intend to change that this month. Why you ask? Well, for one, it’s environmentally friendly. Not having to drive that bulky SUV of mine across town to get my wife a box of Oreos would help Mother Earth.
It’s not just about the environment though. Many who are reading this have had the unfortunate experience of having to gas up their vehicle recently — and with that crazy price of $1.85 a litre (I dread to think how much it is whenever you’re reading this), that $3 Cornwall Transit fare sure looks appealing right about now. Cornwall Transit also prides itself on being accessible. Riders with walkers or strollers need not worry, taking the bus is easy. The public transportation service has also recently installed a handful of new bus stops. These are lighted and are powered by solar energy. Talk about a bright idea! (See what I did there?)
OUR BEST PRICE
Did you know that the bus will also take you nearly anywhere in Cornwall? Working in the Industrial Park? — there’s a bus for that. Want to take your date out for a movie on Friday night? Well luckily for you, there’s a bus for that too! Cornwall Transit can’t assure you that your date will go as smoothly as you hope, but you can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll get there on time! Wherever you’re heading this Spring (and Summer and Fall… you get the picture), consider taking the bus. For more information on the bus, please visit cornwall.ca/transit.

From the House of Lazarus: Last Tuesday after her volunteer shift at House of Lazarus our lovely volunteer, Leitta, found herself in Mountain with a flat tire. She wasn’t sure what she would do because without a phone she was stranded. That is when she encountered an angel out for his afternoon walk. He called CAA for her and paid to have her tire changed for her. She was so grateful and she said that she thanked him but didn’t get his name. She asked if we could share that story of this helpful stranger. We love our community and the beautiful souls who live in it. So, to the thoughtful person who helped in a moment of need...Thank you from Leitta and from the HOL team!

Volunteers always in high demand EMILY COLMAN
Volunteers are always in high demand, and they are how Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District and our Littles prosper. We rely on our volunteers to be able to reach as many children and youth in our community as we can. We are very lucky and blessed to
have some incredible and compassionate volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters. This March, I’d like to shine some light on our Big for a Day program. The Big for a Day program works very much like a one to one match but is ideal for volunteers who wouldn’t have the time to commit to the once a week commitment that the regular Big
Brothers & Big Sisters give. Our Big for a Day volunteers take children who are on the waitlist to one of our monthly group activities or to any event or activity they’d like to bring a child to. Ideas include going to a play or sporting event, going out for a meal, spending time playing games with a child, or just playing in the park. This program gives the
children waiting an opportunity to get out while having that one on one time with a mentor. The wait time for girls and boys has become significant, due to the demand for volunteers. We need you. If you would like more information please email our Caseworker Emily.colman@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca or call 613-933-8035.

Canada in a Changing Climate – We Must Act Now
sectors in the country. Many effective ecological actions can have a positive impact on our environment. We can all contribute to stopping climate change and global warming, but we must first recognize our participation and responsibility to cease the crisis. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) just published its Canada in a Changing Climate 2022 report, and this research exposes the relationship between the social and environmental issues and how different factors such as geography, economy, and culture might influence the effects of climate change. Experts affirm that the whole country will suffer the repercussions of the climate emergency, but some minorities will experience considerably more impact, including seniors, people with chronic diseases, low-income individuals, and children. There is no denying that global warming is a direct consequence of human activity. We have been careless with the management of natural resources and waste and many other human mistreatments of the environment; Canada in a Changing Climate 2022 focuses on how Canada needs to adapt to the clear and present climate crisis and its health-related effects on its people. Note: Modesto Romero-Vargas is a first-year student in the Environmental Technician Program at St. Lawrence College | Cornwall Campus.
TRANSITION CORNWALL+ MODESTO ROMERO-VARGAS Are we aware of the health-related consequences of climate change? Last year, Canada suffered extreme weather changes that impacted people’s lives in many ways. The province of British Columbia faced severe wildfires and heat waves during the summer, as well as catastrophic floods at the end of the year. Every year Canada’s environment is experiencing significant impacts, and now we can see the damage in a more direct way to humans. People are not just losing their homes, farmland, or animals, but many are suffering the long-term consequences of climate change. How can Canada protect itself from climate change in future years? Leaders in the health field acknowledge that there must be a quick adaptation in many social and environmental areas; Innovation in technological, social, and scientific fields must employ a whole range of measures to protect the most vulnerable

Editor’s note: This article has been corrected to fix an error with lawyer Robert Coloumbe’s name. CORNWALL, Ontario - The Roy McMurtry Legal Clinic held an information session for residents of Cumberland Gardens on Wednesday night, March 2 at the Cornwall Legion hosted by lawyer Robert Coloumbe. The Cumberland Gardens residents had all received eviction notices from their landlord,
Bedford Properties and Estates Ltd., over the previous weekend stating that due to the state of disrepair of the property, that they would all be evicted so renovations could be conducted. The landlord informed him of his intention to break their lease. Bedford offered residents three months worth of their rent, which they are legally required to do so by law but offered an additional $4,000 if the tenants signed an agreement and vacated by April 30. River Institute, MCA, and partners will restore 3km of St. Lawrence River shoreline ST. LAWRENCE RIVER INSTITUTE A new collaborative between Watersheds Canada, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Raisin Region Conservation Authority, River Institute, and Great River Network will restore shoreline health in the St. Lawrence River Area of Concern (AOC) from 2021 to 2024. Generously funded by the Great Lakes Protection Initiative – Areas of Concern Program by Environment and Climate Change Canada, this three-year project will support important shoreline restoration in the St. Lawrence River AOC. Through collaboration with local partners and waterfront property owners, 12,500 native species of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers will be planted to restore 12,500-square metres
of vital terrestrial and aquatic habitat along 3 kilometres of degraded shoreline. “Our survey data and experience has shown that the largest barriers faced by shoreline property owners are a lack of knowledge regarding native plant species, and a scarcity of physical and financial resources”, says Chloe Lajoie, Program Manager, Watersheds Canada. “By eliminating these barriers with our Natural Edge Program, more landowners can participate in shoreline restoration activities on their land.” It has been thirty-five years since the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall was first designated as an AOC in 1987. CORNWALL, ON - The return of the Tampon Donation Drive is taking place at The United Centraide SDG, from March 7 to March 22. The initiative of this drive across Canada, is to donate menstrual products, products for shelters, food banks, and other organizations, to ensure that people have access to these items. “We’re getting so many calls every day from people who are struggling to keep up with the cost of living. So many are having to choose between paying their bills or buying food. Menstrual hygiene products are a necessary monthly expense many simply cannot afford right now. We hope donations received from Tampon Tuesday will help give people access to safe products without having to sacrifice other expenses,” said Juliette Labossière, UWC SDG
Executive Director. Last year’s Tampon Donation Drive had a resounding positive feedback from the community. “Last year was our first year running a Tampon Tuesday product drive in our community, and we were so moved by the strong support we received for this campaign and the message behind it. More than 300 boxes of menstrual hygiene products were donated, and we were able to distribute these to five local organizations: Agape, Naomi House, Akwesasne Healing Centre, Baldwin House, and Sexual Assault Support Services Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry & Akwesasne,” said Stephanie Lapointe, Campaign & Communications Coordinator for The United Way Centraide of SD&G. Council failed to move on big election issue NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
8 - Wednesday, March 9, 2022
- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
The next municipal election is coming up this fall. I considered speculating what new issues might drive voters to the polls this election but then realized, there is one issue from the last election that four years later, still remains unfinished, council reform. The most glaring of these unfinished issues is Council reform. I remember four years ago, multiple Council candidates promising some sort of reform of the composition of Cornwall City Council and that this was the issue they were hearing most often as they went door knocking. Here we are four years later, and it looks like once again, no change will be taking place around the Council table. Councillors Justin Towndale and Todd Bennett were two of the most prominent voices calling on their colleagues to examine the possibility of reducing the number of councillors, and whether or not to return to a Ward system. In 2020 City administration conducted a survey of residents to get their opinions on moving to a ward system and on
reducing the size of Council. At that time, nearly 80 per cent of the over 1,500 respondents said that they would like to see the size of Council reduced, while the numbers who wanted to see a return to a ward system were nearly even with a slight advantage to those who were in favour. Administration also surveyed other municipalities and found that over 77 per cent of municipalities of a similar size had fewer councillors than Cornwall’s 10. Council received this information in May of 2021. With this information in hand, Council now had a few options. They could try to pass a by-law reducing the number of Council seats and/or transitioning to a ward system after the 2022 election, they could pass a different by-law asking residents to vote on the matter when they go to the polls in 2022, or they could do nothing. Council chose the third option. For an issue that had such a prominent place of discussion during the last election, and one which has been examined by Council on and off for nearly four years, this is an anti-climactic result. Council no longer has the opportunity to pass any sort of electoral reform. They
also no longer have the opportunity to put the question of electoral reform to the electorate in the form of a referendum. The deadline to put the question of wards and reducing the size of council passed last Monday, which was also Council’s last regularly scheduled Council meeting. Municipal issues are the ones that most directly affect the daily lives of Canadian citizens, and yet, turn out for municipal elections is the lowest of any level of government. Only 36 per cent of residents turned out to vote in the last municipal election in 2018. It is no wonder that turn out in municipal elections is so low, and it is no wonder that when we publish stories about Council decisions, especially around
budget time, the responses we get from the public are full of skepticism and pessimism. If Council talks about reforming itself, it had better do it and not just talk about doing it around election time. That is the worst kind of politics. So this election, when Council candidates come knocking on your door and talk about wanting to see reform, tell them to vote to put it on the ballot in 2026 at their very first meeting, and that if they don’t do so, ask them to resign at their second meeting. What do you think readers? Why has Council reform stalled as an issue? Email me your Letters to the Editor at nseebruch@seawaynews.media
Choose your mode of urban transportation with care Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words
NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
According to Johnny Cash in 1958, Billy Joe’s mom pleaded, “Don’t take your guns to town, son!” In 2003 London, England introduced its ‘Congestion Charge’, a £15 fee to bring your vehicle into town. It’s enforced from 700 am to 1000 pm. Penalties for not having a permit start at £65. (Today’s conversion rate: £1 = $1.63) If only someone had said to Mr. Putin, “Don’t take your tanks, artillery and soldiers to Kiev and Lviv!” I hope that some day soon, he too will pay the price. There are all sorts of ways of getting around in a large city: on foot; by bicycle; private automobile; taxi; water taxi; public transit: bus; trolley bus; street car; cable car; tap-tap; funicular; trolley bus; subway; elevated rail; helicopter; funicular…
Subway travel is efficient. However, a tourist riding The Tube doesn’t get to see Tower Bridge, Parliament or the Millennium Wheel. At one time or another, I’ve used every mode of urban travel. My one-day record of ‘differents’ was five, in Vancouver, including on foot, SkyTrain elevated rail from the airport; diesel bus; rental bicycle around town; SeaBus to North Vancouver. When strolling about was best, it was easy to find a place to lock up the bike. (Unfortunately, there’s no way to theft-proof the contents attached to a fully-laden tripper’s bike. By far, the most inexpensive, flexible and intimate mode of exploring most cities is à pied. At the other end of the scale is your private automobile. With it come the burdens of finding parking, then feeding the parking meter; restrictions on stopping, left turns and one-way streets. If your mode of getting around is a motor home or pulling a travel trailer, watch out for height restrictions at covered parking facilities. The likelihood of finding a double length
EN ROUTE TO UKRAINE – Finding a parking spot for today’s Russian ‘tourists’ is not a problem. However, their presence is not welcomed by the locals. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk) parking spot is even less than a Russian soldier finding a welcome in Ukraine. Parallel parking with a trailer is just as impossible. However, as this week’s photo illustrates, the Russians now visiting Ukrainian cities such as Kiev and Odessa are parking their trailers wherever they wish. Their tanks just fire several rounds at any occupied parking space and move in.
The narrow and twisting mediaeval streets of Europe were not built with visiting tourists’ motor homes in mind. During our last stay in Portugal, I noticed that large parking areas had been set aside at the perimeter of the cities. A shuttle service ferried visitors into town. Only if you are driving to visit Venice will you not need to give parking a thought.
OPINION
Putin steals page from Khrushchev’s nuke you playbook Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings
EDITORIAL@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM
The current crisis in Ukraine and the threat of nuclear war by a Russian dictator is not the first time we have been a flick of the switch from the planet being incinerated in a super power showdown. In October 1962 the world was on the brink of mutual assured destruction as the United States and Soviet Union faced off in a high-stakes game of chicken. It became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. Today it is Vladimir Putin. Then it was Nakita Khrushchev. In the end, after Khrushchev warned that he was prepared to nuke the U. S., and had the world going to be bed wondering if there was going to be a tomorrow, the Soviet leader blinked. The world took a collective sigh of relief. *********** Putin super fan Alex Ovechkin earns $10 million (US) playing for the Washington Capitals. His personal wealth has been pegged at $80M (and counting). So, with that kind of bank account and his newly discovered dislike of war (we assume he was talking about Ukraine), perhaps it might be a nice gesture on his part to donate a million greenbacks (no rubles please) to a Ukrainian relief fund. Of course, he isn’t going to do that because that would tick off his pal Putin. ... Ovechkin claims to be Christian. Both he and Putin are Russian Orthodox. He wears a cross and celebrates goals by kissing his glove and pointing up to heaven in memory of a brother killed in a car accident. ... Good for Eugene Melnyk. The Ottawa Senators owner will have the
Ukrainian national anthem played at home games for the rest of the season. Other NHL owners should follow his lead. Melnyk’s parents were from the Ukraine. *********** In the dog-eat-dog world of upper level politics, this was big game hunting. Grant Campbell, the freshly-crowned Conservative MP for Stormont, took aim and fired with both barrels at Lionel Chevrier in the House of Commons in March 1959. Campbell, part of the resounding Diefenbaker sweep, accused “Cornwall’s most illustrious native son” of betraying his home town while serving the riding as Liberal MP and holding down a position of influence as minister of transport. He later became president of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. Campbell accused the Authority of “assassinating” Cornwall by agreeing to have two major locks - Eisenhower and Snell - built on the U.S. side at Massena. Chevrier was Stormont MP from 1935 to 1954 when he was appointed first president of the Authority. Both Chevrier and Opposition Leader Lester Pearson denied the allegations and said that putting the locks on the Canadian side near Cornwall would have been too expensive. They also touted the dream of an all-Canadian Seaway. Campbell told how he bumped into Chevrier in the hallway shortly after his verbal assault. Chevrier, the consummate politician, said, with a smirk, “Nice speech Grant!” as he walked by. THIS MONTH CIRCA 1959 - A 22-yearold Cornwall hockey player survived a fractured skull thanks to the skill of surgeons at Montreal Neurological Institute. He was injured when hit over the head by a stick swung by an opposing player in a Border
Hockey League at the Glengarry Gardens in Alexandria. Three days after the incident, Alexandria police charged his attacker with assault causing bodily harm. The referee’s report stated that that it was a deliberate vicious attack. ... An Ontario Fire Marshal investigator said a blaze that destroyed the Metropolitan store on Pitt Street was suspicious and arson was not ruled out. ... Courtaulds announced that a second shift would be added to its Larson boat building operation to keep up with demand. ... Construction of the Loyalist Hotel in Morrisburg was completed. It replaced three hotels – Riverside, Windsor and Walrich – destroyed for construction of the Seaway. ... City council agreed to send a letter of support to the Board of Broadcast Commissioners for a Cornwall-based television station. The bid was submitted by Montreal businessman Stanley Shenkman. ... Council voted not to renew a contract with a public relations firm hired to promote the city and improve its image. ... Council voted against a $3,000 grant to the Cornwall Chevies senior hockey club. In a presentation to council, Lt.-Col. Joseph Donihee, a member of the club’s board of directors, said that without the grant the team would not be back for another season. He said the request was a “last ditch” effort to save the team. Council said it was not in the business of funding professional hockey teams. ... A mother saved herself and her four children when an oil-fed burner exploded in the family’s Newington mobile home. Shirley Smith shoved four of her young children out a window then bundled up her three-week-old and escaped through a door. Her husband was at work. ... Newly named federal Liberal leader John Wintermeyer accused Leslie Frost’s provincial Conservative government of
putting up roadblocks for the proposed Cornwall municipal airport. Wintermeyer said the airport plans were being stonewalled by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). HERE AND THERE Former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay and former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin are a couple. They live in the Big Apple. The 64-year-old Duguay, from Sudbury, once was married to a super model and once dated Farrah Fawcett. Sure going in a different direction. ...Hard to understand why a black professional athlete is tarred and feathered for taking a knee during the national anthem but protesters are praised by the same critics for bringing a city’s commercial/residential hub to its knees. ... Quick way to part with $100: stop at the gas station for a top up before picking up a “few” things at the grocery store. ... My daughter tells me that while travelling from Boston to Rhode Island Saturday she passed a transport with a banner that said, F.... Trudeau. It had Maryland plates. TRIVIA ANSWER Prime Minister Richard Bennett was born in New Brunswick. Paul Martin, John Diefenbaker, Lester Pearson, William Lyon Mckenzie and Paul Martin were all born in Ontario. TRIVIA This National Hockey League legend spent several seasons as a regular at Cornwall Golf and Country Club.
Deslandes@ rrca.on.ca.
