Local Green Party candidate living here in the years to come. I am prepared to work with and across party lines at Queen’s Park to ensure the people of SDSG and Ontario are supported where they are.” Jacqueline MILNER explained. Her favourite quote is “The Green Party is no longer the alternative, it is the imperative.” By Rosa Clemente Jacqueline will be canvassing about the riding in the coming days as well as attending all community forums.
Do you have an elderly family member whose driving has become dangerous? If so, telling them you fear for their safety can be difficult. Here are a few tips to help you broach this sensitive subject. Give examples: Prepare a list of your relative’s risky driving activities. For example, not coming to a complete stop at an intersection or driving the wrong way down a one-way street. You can use these examples to gently question your loved one and determine whether they’ve forgotten the rules of the road or if their vision, hearing or reflexes have deteriorated with age. If needed, you can suggest they consult their doctor. Be compassionate: Losing the ability to drive can be frightening for someone who’s been doing so for decades. Therefore, approach the subject gently, and choose your words carefully. You don’t want to infantilize your loved one. Above all, be empathetic when expressing your concerns. Offer solutions: Instead of telling your loved one they must stop driving immediately, suggest ways they can get behind the wheel more safely. For example, ask them to avoid
It’s getting more convenient than ever to upcycle and upgrade your home décor. Through a partnership between the Agapè Centre and Habitat for Humanity, Furniture Partners held its grand opening on Friday, April 22, 2022 on Montreal Road. “We have all secondhand furniture in here, so anything that needs a little upcycling, or maybe a bit of repair. But, it’s stuff that is still too good to go to the landfill,” said the executive director of the Agapè Centre, Lisa Duprau. Proceeds from furniture sales will go directly towards both organizations, who aim to house and feed the homeless. “Our tagline is feeding and housing our community,” said Duprau. “We encourage everyone to come check out what we have and find their newest treasure.” Furniture Partners has now been operating for just over a month, but today marked the
official grand opening. A ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Grand was attended by both MP Eric Duncan, MPP Jim McDonell. The collaboration also involved support from the city of Cornwall, as well as contributions from the community and events like the Ghost Walk for charity. The partnership comes at a good time for the city, which is aiming to help resident divert waste from the landfill as part of its broader waste management strategy. People are encouraged to take advantage of the chance to breath new life into their old, gently used furniture and housewares. Anyone interested in donating items should still donate them to either the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 1400 Vincent Massey Dr., or at the Agapè Centre at 40 Fifth St. W. The new store is not able to accept large donations. Furniture Partners is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Every year, CN is required to clear its right-of-way of any vegetation that may pose a safety hazard. Vegetation on railway right-of-way, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure. The spray program is not being done for aesthetic reasons. For safe railway operations, CN will conduct its annual spray program on its rail lines in the province of Ontario. A certified professional will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (primarily along the 16 - 24 feet graveled area/ballast). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be met. CN may use the following herbicides and active ingredients: VP480 (Dow), Esplanade (Bayer), Detail (BASF), Arsenal Powerline (BASF), Navius Flex (Bayer), Gateway (Corteva), Hasten NT (Norac), VisionMax (Bayer) using Glyphosate (480g/L or 540g/L), Indaziflam (200 g/L), Saflufenacil (29.74%), Imazapyr isopropylamine (26.7%), Metsulfuron-methyl (12.6%), Aminocyclopyrachlor (39.5%), Paraffinic Oil (586 g/L), Alkoxylated alcohol non-ionic surfactants (242 g/L), Methyl and Ethyl oleate (esterified vegetable oil) 75.20% CN only uses herbicides that have been approved for use in Canada and in the Province within which they are applied. The program is expected to take place from May to October 2022. Visit www.cn.ca/vegetation to see the list of cities as well as the updated schedule. For more information, contact the CN Public Inquiry Line at contact@cn.ca or 1-888-888-5909.

Are You One of Many Canadians Living With Hearing Loss? Many Canadians are not even aware they have hearing loss. A Statistics Canada study1 showed that while 38 percent of Canadians aged 40 – 59 years had an audiometrically measured hearing loss, only four per cent self-reported a loss. Similarly, 75 per cent of Canadians aged 60 – 69 years displayed a measured loss, with only seven per cent self-reporting. Further, 93 per cent of Canadians aged 70-79 years showed a measured loss, while only 19 per cent self-reported a hearing loss. Measured hearing loss compared to self-reported hearing loss

How is hearing loss diagnosed?
A hearing care professional is best equipped to assess your hearing and determine if you have hearing loss. During your hearing consultation you can expect: A discussion about your current symptoms and your overall health history A non-invasive physical examination of your ear with an instrument called an otoscope An audiometric test which is performed in a soundproof booth, during which you wear headphones and listen to sounds and words directed to each ear A speech test asking you to repeat a list of words given at different volumes The results of these tests recorded on an audiogram

Liberals in Stormont—Dundas—South Glengarry Nominate Kirsten Gardner as Ontario Liberal Party Candidate Liberals in Stormont—Dundas—South Glengarry have nominated Kirsten Gardner, a community activist and Deputy Mayor of South Dundas, as their Ontario Liberal Party (OLP) candidate for the next provincial election. “Kirsten’s passion for public service is obvious when you see how she has represented her community as Deputy Mayor,” said OLP Leader, Steven Del Duca. “Ontario Liberals are best positioned to beat Doug Ford’s Conservatives, and Kirsten’s experience in government will be instrumental in that fight.” Gardner’s career of public service includes positions of senior responsibility at the municipal, provincial and federal government levels. Before municipal politics, Gardner volunteered on the Parent Council of Morrisburg Public School. Gardner is passionate about education and she is recognized for her leadership at the county level for advocating for rural education reform. Also at Stormont Dundas
and Glengarry council, Gardner was a proponent for funding the Mobile Crisis Response Team pilot project with the OPP. The project added a trained mental health nurse to work with officers at the SDG Gardner detachment when responding to mental health crises. If elected, Gardner will bring her leadership and community values to the communities of Stormont— Dundas—South Glengarry as their MPP, taking their concerns and issues to Queen’s Park. “It’s time for the strong representation that Stormont Dundas South Glengarry needs at Queens Park, the concerns of our constituents need to be addressed,” said Kirsten. “As part of the Liberal team, we will deliver. It’s time.”

United Way Centraide SDG launches first Handbags for Hope online 50/50 raffle
Gifts of stock benefit donors and charities alike
Cornwall, Ontario (April 25, 2022) - The United Way Centraide SDG (UWC SDG) is excited to launch its first-ever online 50/50 raffle as part of its spring fundraiser. Sponsored by Your Credit Union, this year’s Handbags for Hope will run from April 25 – May 19 and will include a 50/50 raffle and an online handbag auction. On Monday, April 25 tickets were available for the 50/50 on Rafflebox. The raffle will run for four weeks, ending on Thursday, May 19. The winner, to be announced on May 20, will take home half the jackpot in a luxurious YSL bag valued at $3110. From May 12 – 19, UWC SDG will also be hosting an online handbag auction with a small selection of purses in a variety of styles and colours from indie and well known designer brands. “While we hope this will be the last time our signature spring fundraiser will be digital rather than in-person, we’re really excited to host our first online 50/50 raffle,” said Juliette Labossière, United Way Centraide SDG Executive Director. “Fundraising has been challenging over the past couple of years, but it’s pushed us to innovate and try new strategies to raise money for our work in poverty reduction and our 16 member agencies that are running life-changing

regularly invest – as well as to the charities who are fortunate enough to accept them. CCHF has recently partnered with RBC Wealth Management in Cornwall as our full-service investment partner, helping make the facilitation of gifts of stock or mutual funds from our donors even easier. While rewarding, giving the gift of stock can take a little more time and administration than sending a cheque in the mail. When donors wish a gift of securities to land within the current tax year, it’s important to plan ahead. For this reason, we encourage donors considering gifts of stock to start the process in October or November, so all facilitation is complete by December. When it comes to supporting local healthcare, every dollar counts, and each opportunity to raise funds, whether $10, or $10,000, is appreciated. If you’re interested in more information regarding gifts of stock and securities, or if you’re considering a making donation to our Hospital Foundation, please feel free to contact me at amy.gillespie@ cornwallhospital.ca.
local programs.” All money raised from Handbags for Hope stays in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and is invested in local agencies and programs that are tackling #UNIGNORABLE issues such as poverty, mental health and hunger. By managing investments in a wide range of programs – including youth mentorship, counselling, food security, essential skills training, mental health awareness, sexual assault support, and specialized services – UWC SDG ensures that every dollar donated fills gaps in care and is addressing the most pressing needs in our communities. Charitable donations come in all shapes and sizes. Every gift we receive helps our Hospital Foundation support local healthcare. At CCHF, our fundraising ranges from monthly giving to our 50/50 lottery, sponsorship from local businesses to tribute gifts, independent donations, estates and more. Gifts of stock and securities represent another type of donation we manage at the Foundation. While donors give to charities that speak to their hearts, charitable tax receipts can be beneficial to their pocketbooks, too. Some donors may choose to provide charities with a gift of publicly listed securities, like stock or mutual funds, instead of cash. In this case, they may reduce their taxes owing beyond just the charitable receipt. In general, when a stock sells at a higher value than it was purchased at, and a profit is made, an individual will be taxed for capital gains. However, as of 2006, publicly listed securities donated to Canadian charities are exempt from capital gains tax. This opportunity can provide a substantial tax savings if the donated stock or mutual fund has really grown in value. On the other hand, sometimes individuals donate a security that performs at a loss in their portfolio as part of tax planning. Thanks to this approach, they can claim the capital loss and offset other gains made during the year. Or they might decide to donate a stock that hasn’t done well as a type of good karma to a worthy charity. While gifts of stocks and securities don’t represent the most common way to donate, they can be beneficial to individuals who

Can someone get Doug a map SEAWAY NEWS Sometimes you have to wonder if the Doug Ford government believes that our local provincial riding is located in Quebec…or New York State…or maybe Neptune. Last month the Conservatives, who are in full election mode, released ‘Connecting the East: A Draft Transportation Plan for Eastern Ontario’. It’s a plan that contains more than 50 near- and long-term actions, including highway expansions and public transit improvements, that will help address gridlock, connect more people to places and support economic growth. The plan includes the expansion of Highway 417 to four continuous lanes in each direction between Highway 416 and Maitland Avenue in Ottawa, long-term planning work to widen Highway 401 to up to eight lanes in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, improvements to local and intercommunity bus services, support for the trucking sector by adding truck stops along Highway 401 and the development of a new marine strategy. The government, apparently, consulted with a myriad of stakeholders to ensure they got this plan just right. Guess who is missing in all that funding and good news?
Us – the eastern most part of eastern Ontario. The stakeholders who helped with this report only have to pick up a newspaper to understand our plight. Just last week another poor soul lost their life navigating what is easily the most dangerous highway ANYWHERE in eastern Ontario. Where was MPP Jim McDonell in any of these discussions? Surely someone could have suggested that something, anything, be done to mitigate the dangers of the two-lane gauntlet that links Cornwall with Highway 417. Passing lanes would be an amazing addition to Highway 138. An argument has been made that geography makes this solution difficult. There’s very little Crown-owned property immediately adjacent to the 138 – which means government would have to secure additional property along the highway to build passing lanes. It’s been suggested that the costs of purchasing this property weighs heavily in any decision to construct passing lanes. But how much does a human life cost? How many more lives will be lost on this highway before enough is enough? To be fair, the problem on Highway 138 was not created by government. The issues that plague the 138 are created by us, those
that use the highway on a regular basis. Motorists often drive too fast and pass at dangerous times. If we slowed down, many of the collisions on the 138 would evaporate. But with an increased number of largescale businesses, and other smaller ones, making eastern Ontario their home (Cornwall’s industrial park will soon be completely full) we will see more and more heavy trucks transiting the 138 to make their way to Ottawa and other regional communities north of our community. It’s a recipe for disaster if more isn’t done to address the number of fatalities and serious collisions that take place on Highway
138. As of this writing there are just two candidates who have put their name forward for consideration on the provincial election ballot this summer. Businessman Nolan Quinn is looking to succeed the retiring McDonell on the Tory ticket. South Dundas Deputy Mayor Kirsten Gardiner will run as the Liberal candidate. Regardless of who wins the local race, they should make access to a safe Highway 138 one of their top priorities. We need a locally-born solution to this problem because it is clear the bean counters and decision-makers in Toronto have no idea we exist.
September.” One of my favourite drives is on B.C. 99, more often called “The Sea to Sky Highway”, between the sea at Vancouver and the sky at Whistler. It was thanks to the 2010 winter Olympics that the once treacherous road was transformed to a safe scenic highway. Unfortunately, some of the adrenaline-fuelled young junkies do their best to once again convert it to being treacherous. If you’re familiar with Toronto, you know the significance of the address ‘999 Queen Street West’. Being under legal drinking and driving age, but being almost of age, a teen’s logic says “I’m actually seventeen, because 16.999 is much closer to seventeen than my actual age of sixteen. I’ll have a Molson’s.” If the aviation machinist says to his assistant, “Cut me a piece of titanium

The number ‘zero’, is also expressed as zilch, nada and nil. ‘10’ indicates perfection, as in Nadia Comaneci’s 10s at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Another 10: Bo Derek in the 1979 movie of the same number. More recently, Guy Lafleur’s Montreal Canadien’s number. At furthest end of the scale is infinity. If my computer would allow me to flip an ‘8’ 90-degrees, I could reproduce the ‘infinity’ symbol. In Scripture, (Matthew 18:2122), Jesus was asked “How often should one be forgiven?”, his response was “seventy times seven”. I guess Matthew’s laptop didn’t have the infinity symbol either. Let’s give number ‘9’, my Sesame
Street number of the week, some thought. If they had cars instead of donkeys in Biblical times, I’m sure gasoline pumps would have had a ‘.IX’ per liter after the price whole numbers. In our day, gasoline is currently going for $175.9 per liter, never $176. The ‘.9’ is always there. These days something ‘99’ and something else ‘.99’ claims “This is a bargain!” The real estate agent claims, “This charming handyman special fixer-upper is going for only $199,000”, but the current owner asserts it as, “A bargain at $200,000.” Who is fooling whom? If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck – it’s a duck. There have been many nines in my life. By giving me a 49.9% in my final exam, my grade XIII Latin teacher was saying, “If I liked you, and if you had worked hard, I could have given you a pass. See you next

- OP/ED Visitor restrictions
BY CORNWALL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is currently in moderate visitor restrictions as part of the hospital’s ongoing response to COVID-19. During moderate visitor restrictions, most inpatients can identify up to 2 fully vaccinated essential visitors/care partners for scheduled visits (maximum of 1 visitor per day). Moderate visitor restrictions are the hospital’s mid-tier level restrictions between low and full. These restrictions are in place to protect our staff, physicians and vulnerable patients. These restrictions are based on infection control guidance provided by the provincial government, and are consistent with those in place at regional hospitals. Our teams meet frequently to review our policies, as well as: updated guidance and best practice; policies at other hospitals; and the COVID-19 prevalence in the community. Over the course of the pandemic, our visitor restrictions have fluctuated based on the above criteria. As we navigate through the challenges of a sixth wave, our teams, regional partners and public health officials believe these restrictions to be necessary to protect staff, physicians and patients. However, CCH recognizes that there may be circumstances in which additional family or caregiver presence may be required for compassionate or exceptional reasons, which may include: accompanying or staying with minors under the age of 18; visiting patients at end-of-life; or other circumstances requiring family presence as determined with the care team. We also understand that infection control measures including visitor restrictions at the hospital may be frustrating, especially as th e rest of the community begins to move beyond the pandemic. However, hospitals are unique, highrisk settings. Unlike restaurants, shopping malls or gyms, hundreds of high-risk and vulnerable patients are being treated under one roof at any given time at CCH, making these infection control measures all more important. Our visitation and screening staff are doing their very best to work with every patient, caregiver and family to curate updated visitation lists, accommodate exceptional circumstances, or ensure patients can be escorted by caregivers. We understand the process isn’t perfect and sometimes it can be challenging and may seem complicated. For instance, if a patient is discharged and readmitted, they are entitled to review who they want on their visitation list. Further complicating matters is that every patient’s personal situation and family dynamic can be different and unique. Regardless, we are always looking to ensure this process is seamless, transparent, easy and fair for our patients and their families. CCH will continue to review our visitation policies to ensure we can protect our staff, physicians and patients, while also remaining compassionate in our approach and consistent with our partners. In the meantime, we thank the community for its understanding, and like most of you, we look forward to the day in which we can safely welcome more visitors and caregivers. For the most up to date information on our visitor restrictions please visit: https://www.cornwallhospital.ca/en/ VisitingHours.

One of the most expensive – and largest – real estate transactions in city history has all but pushed the decades old on-again, off-again drive to establish a bona fide university campus in Cornwall over the cliff. The Nav Centre, with all its pro-university campus amenities, was a huge carrot at the end of the university campus stick. The soon-to-become new owner, Devcore Group of Gatineau, hasn’t gone into detail on how the sprawling property overlooking the St. Lawrence River will be developed over the next few years, but high-end housing, especially condos, perhaps a gated community, would be a perfect fit for the vast splendid piece of real estate. The potential for the 560-room building with dozens of meetings rooms is immense. Opened in 1978 (Public Works Minister Jean Chretien cut the ribbon) as the Transport Canada Training Institute, the facility came in with an overbudget price tag of around $35 million. It would not be outrageous to suggest that the new owners paid at least four times that amount. The sale, to be finalized on June 30, gives Devcore an even bigger foot print in the local housing market. It currently has almost 500 rental units in the city, including the Brookdale Arms. It is the city’s biggest landlord. Over the years, the city has talked to the University of Ottawa and Carleton University about establishing a satellite campus in the city. More recently, a sizeable investment was made in hiring a consultant to open the door but neither Carleton nor Ottawa U expressed interest in a degree-granting campus in the city. Nav Canada was interested in the facility being re-invented as a university campus. When the province put the wheels in motion to set up a French-language university, there was hope that Cornwall would be looked at. Instead, it was given to voter rich Toronto. *********** THIS AND THAT Donald Trump has done wonders for the book publishing

THIS MONTH IN 1934 – An inquest on May 12, 1934 into the death of a New York Central Railway section worker concluded that a plank across the south span of the NYC bridge derailed a railway motor car and threw two employees into the icy St. Lawrence River 40 feet below on Dec. 1, 1933. The rail bridge was being converted to accommodate vehicular traffic. What the inquest couldn’t answer was how the plank got across the rail line. One of the men, Adelard Tessier, drowned. His body was recovered in April along the Cornwall Island shoreline by island resident Mrs. Joe Thompson. Joseph Meillieur survived the icy plunge while a third member of the rail crew, Henry Scott of Newington, suffered fractures to both legs. *********** A homeless man convicted of assaulting provincial police constable W. It was created to allow Sunrise club members to see what excellence looks like. It is an award of strength and dedication, in that the members acknowledge that the honoree has been an exceptional role model and fountain of knowledge for each of them. It represents the absolute best recognition that the club can offer, and it is an award of love, in that love in its purest form comes from deep admiration and respect. Each member of the Sunrise Club elaborated on Bette’s dedication by sharing tidbits of information about her commitment to Rotary, highlighting the unlimited ways she has

exemplified “service above self” and “people of action”. Bette’s contributions to Rotary have seemingly transcended any limitations placed upon her. She is lovingly considered the Sunrise Club’s “Matriarch”, a woman who is the head of a family or tribe and who is the founder or dominant member of a community or group. Mamma Mia! Bette Miller is all that and much, much more!
The return of warmer weather has also spelled the return of numerous events and festivals for residents and visitors to safely enjoy. April was a busy month in Cornwall with many activities taking place. The Cornwall & Area Pop Event (CAPE) returned to the Benson Centre following a two-year hiatus for a celebration of all things pop culture. Kudos to organizers Randy and Carol Sauve who have turned CAPE into a staple event on Cornwall’s event calendar each year. They have already announced the date for CAPE 2023! Prior to CAPE, the Benson Centre played host to the Canadian Juvenile Broomball Championship, with 16 teams and some 300 players and officials participating from across Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Our modern sports facilities, friendly accommodations and terrific location makes Cornwall an ideal venue for hosting major sporting events and the broomball championship once again showcased that fact. It wasn’t the only major sporting event in
April. The Cornwall Gymnastics Club hosted the third annual Cotton Candy Classic on April 23-24 with over 200 athletes participating. The month wrapped up with the return of the St. Lawrence Marathon on April 30th, a Boston Marathon qualifier that drew participants from as far away as British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Arizona. Also, spring hockey has returned to Cornwall in a big way with the return of Own the Ice Hockey’s annual Border Town Challenge, featuring 100 teams over two weekends. These events – and many others – contribute significantly to the social and economic wellbeing of our community in addition to building community pride. And there are many more on the way. A major historical celebration is planned for the weekend of May 20-22 in Lamoureux Park, with historical displays and cultural performances filling the park. On the same weekend, the Craft Shack will present Rock the River at Pointe Maligne featuring live concerts, craft beer and local food. That’s in addition to upcoming performances by the Cornwall Concert Series and Seaway Valley Theatre Company and live shows at Aultsville Theatre and Port Theatre. Also, the popular Cornwall Kinsmen Farmers’ Market returns on May 29. You can find out more about these events and others at www.CornwallTourism. com. I encourage you to get out and safely enjoy them – and all of the other great things our city has to offer!

Timothy Ming,
tween right and wrong; it is knowing the difference between right and almost right.” This good description can also apply to many matters of faith and life. The more we deliberately expose ourselves to God’s Word, the more His Word will be able take root in our lives. Our level of discernment will be proportionate with our time spent in the study of his Word. 3. It’s how you know about Salvation 2 Timothy 3:15 reads “From infancy (Timothy) you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus”. Bible study helps reinforce the truth that Jesus is to be the focal point of our faith. Understand that Jesus Christ is the centerpiece of the whole Bible. As we honestly and accurately study His Word, the Holy Spirit will guide us into truth. How you view the Bible will determine the place that it holds in your life. The Bible should not be merely viewed as ‘good literature’ or simply a ‘good book.’ It is not just a collection of short stories or even a history book. The Bible is the wonderful, lifegiving, living Word of God. Enjoy! Pastor Jim

We should become so familiar with the truth, that a lie will not have a chance in your presence, and Bible studies can help accomplish this. We all need to guard against the threat of false spiritual teaching by executing a strategic plan that includes the consistent and diligent study of God’s Word. 1. It guards against error. Yes, there are some spiritual teachings that are untrue and false. We should look at it like a harmful virus that seeks to infect and contaminate. Likewise, we should see the truth that is God’s Word as the vaccination or cure that will stop its spread and eradicate the damage it causes spiritually to your life. 2. Jane in Bonville wonders why flyer pages still have half pages; why the prices of groceries has gone up so high; why everything seems so hard. I was a single parent and don’t know how single parents these days get along. It seems prices have doubled and yet bottom line of distributors, wholesalers, etc., increase. Monopolies are the answer. All grocery stores raise prices and all follow suit. There bottom line leave little to question. There are all the same… Independent or not hard to believe...?

Dwyer Glass who will be caulking all 396 panes of glass shortly will use over 1 mile of silicone caulking to seal the 5,300 linear feet of window seams and will require a custom scaffolding to carry out the work. Did you know that there are only 2 ½ days left to enter the “I love my Mom because” contest here at the Square. Entries must be 100 words or less and submitted in the collection box in the Mother’s Day display at centre court on the main floor of the mall prior to 12:00 noon on Friday May 6th, 2022. Your mom could win a prize based on your letter. Good Luck! The Mother’s Day display makes it easy for families to come and take a selfie with mom as a keepsake during mall hours. Under the auspices of the Eastern Ontario Agri-Food Network and Kozroots Community Empowerment Project, local farmers and vendors have been offering their products for sale since the beginning of March. Cornwall Square is looking at the opportunity of keeping the Farmer’s Market alive here at the Square on Thursdays during the summer months albeit in an outdoor setting in the parking lot at the east end of the property between Sydney Street and the former Food Store building. Once again, Cornwall Square is pleased to work with the City of Cornwall in making the parkette bordering Pitt Street, First Street and the fire lane available for City run events and activities through the summer months and reinforce the link between Cornwall Square and balance of the Cornwall downtown commercial district. Incredible Edible Plant Festival 2022 CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS For vegetable giveaway Ten years ago, the first Incredible Edibles plant festival took place. And it is happening again on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28. Over the course of two days over 2,000 vegetable plants will be given away free to organizations such as social housing, seniors’ residences, youth groups and food banks as well as to the general public. And we are asking if you would like to volunteer to be part of this. The aim is to help people discover the
value and joy of growing their own food even if they don’t have land as we offer plants in large permanent pots as well as others that can be transplanted into gardens. Community gardeners are currently growing these plants and we need you to help, by transplanting some into larger pots and / or handing them out at various locations in Cornwall. If you can volunteer, let Penny Bateman know by emailing her at transitioncornwallarea@gmail.com
On Sunday morning a dozen neighbourhood folks showed their support for the RENAISSANCE ASSOCIATION and its objective to create a safe, healthy and clean district by scouring untidy streets to unearth litter over the course of one hour. Eric Duncan, our MP, an enthusiastic crew member, returned to our meeting spot, Aime Leblanc Park, with two bags of litter in hand and, one by one, the remaining crew arrived with bulging bags of trash which they left behind but took away a sense of satisfaction. The catch of the day was a toss up between the broken bed frame hauled up from the shoreline and a treasure trove of toques, sandals and socks. The group used 6 industrial-size bags to stuff in their finds and it filled a recycling bin to the brim. Hats off to one and all!
Akwesasne celebrates new program office in Cornwall to assist children and families CORNWALL — It is with great enthusiasm that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is celebrating the opening of an expanded program to assist children and families who are in need of child protection-related services. The Akwesasne Representative and Advocacy Program (ARAP) officially opened its doors today at 55 Water Street, Cornwall, with the purpose to assist Mohawk families who are involved with Children’s Aid Societies (CAS). The new location will improve our ability to support those who would ordinarily reside in Akwesasne but are currently residing anywhere else across Canada. As a result of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act of 2017, CAS is required to make contact with a child’s Indigenous community when a child is involved in CAS care. The purpose of contacting a First Nation community is to ensure Indigenous children do not lose connection to the culture and traditions associated with the First Nation, and ensures that the best interest of the children is represented. The staff at the ARAP serve as representatives for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne in
child protection cases. ARAP provides services to children and their families in many forms, from cultural to judicial. Known also as “Band Reps,” the staff are committed to assisting children and families with navigation of the court and social services system, while also establishing and maintaining connections, and providing cultural support. The program is funded by Indigenous Services Canada and is the result of appeals to the Human Rights Commission. Band rep services have previously been provided by MCA’s Department of Community & Social Services – specifically the Akwesasne Child & Family Services Program. New funding and legislation has made it possible to expand the program and open a new location, now under MCA’s Akwesasne Justice De-partment. “The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has offered limited band rep services for many years,” said Grand Chief Abram Benedict. “Today we are proud to be able to expand our services and open a service location within the City of Cornwall. The Akwesasne Representative & Advocacy Program will provide culturally appropriate support to children
A grand opening celebration today included a ribbon cutting by community elders Lois Terrance and Brenda Lafrance, Grand Chief Abram Benedict, Indigenous Services Canada Regional Director Anne Scotton, and Cornwall Mayor Glen Grant, along with staff from the ARAP, Arlene Thomas, Kim Herne, and Carolyn Francis. and families from Akwesasne.” ARAP’s services are available to any child or family across Canada who have Indian status or who are eligible to acquire Indian status with the Mohawks of Akwesasne. The
CAS agency involved will connect with the client’s First Nation band reps. Today, we are celebrating our new location and further accessibility to all those who can benefit from our services.
Emergency Preparedness can be a Life Saver! May 1 through 7 is Emergency Preparedness Week, and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) is reminding you to ensure you and your family are ready in case of emergency. There may be little to no warning before an emergency, so it is important to be prepared ahead of time. Know the types of emergencies your area is at risk for, have an emergency plan and keep emergency kits in accessible areas. “Often, in the event of an emergency, there isn’t time to gather things, or discuss what to do next. Having kits and plans in place saves valuable time.” says Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the EOHU. “Situations can go from normal to dangerous very quickly and being prepared and knowing what to do can prevent injury and even save lives”
Emergencies may require you to evacuate your home quickly, or shelter in place, depending on the situation. Everyone in your household should know the emergency plans, including evacuation routes from your home and neighbourhood, emergency contact information, and meeting points if you become separated. Depending on the emergency, you may not have access to food, fresh water, and other amenities like electricity, and first responders may not be able to assist you right away. Emergency kits stocked with survival essentials prepare you to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours, and should be stored in easy to access areas, in both your home and your car. Some items all emergency kits should contain include:
The grass in our community might be a tad long in some areas in May, but don’t worry — there’s a good reason behind it. The City of Cornwall will be undertaking some concrete actions in May to help wild pollinators throughout the City. No-Mow May, which was approved by City Council on Monday, will see the City not enforce Section 3 of the Yard Maintenance By-Law 2013-212 as amended, from May 1 to May 31, 2022. This will allow property owners to voluntarily have all grass and weeds on their properties to grow more than 15 cm for the month of May. In addition to increasing food sources for pollinators, not mowing grass in May also prevents disturbance of overwintering insects and amphibians that may be burrowed or hiding in leaves and lawns. It should also be noted that over 80 per cent of all flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce seeds. Letting lawns grow and weeds and flowers to prosper also reduces a homeowner’s
carbon footprint, as people do not have to cut their grass using gas mowers, which aligns directly with the City’s Zero Carbon goal. “This is an initiative that started years ago in the UK,” said Angela Parker, the City’s Sustainability Project Coordinator. “Our neighbours in Russell Township encouraged No Mow May last year to help the declining bee population. No Mow May is about the much-needed pollinators. Without pollinators, terrestrial ecosystems would not survive. They are key to our existence.” Certain City-owned properties deemed less-frequented, such as the north-west corner of Second Street East and Boundary Road, will not be mowed during No Mow May. Any Cornwall homeowner wishing to participate are asked to register their property by visiting the following link. The City will distribute bilingual lawn signs on the first week of May to the first 100 residents that register. The signs will then be picked up in early June.
- Battery-operated radio Be sure to check your kits annually and rotate out the food and water to ensure nothing is past its expiry date. More information on how to prepare for emergencies can be found at www. getprepared.gc.ca and https://www.ontario. ca/page/be-prepared-emergency.
CCH LOOKS TO THE FUTURE OF EXCEPTIONAL CARE
New 2022-2027 Strategic Plan Will Help CCH Lead Innovative Healthcare Transformation in Cornwall and Eastern Ontario
Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is pleased to share its new 2022-2027 Strategic Plan Leading Innovative Transformation. This new Strategic Plan comes at a critical point in healthcare transformation as hospitals begin recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Three strategic directions have been identified to create measurable positive impacts on our population: Recovery, People and Integration. The plan is also guided by a renewed mission and vision statement, as well as our ICARE values, elevating CCH’s commitment to collaborative and compassionate care that is equitable and empowering for those it serves. “Over the past number of months, we have engaged with our CCH teams, partners and stakeholders to set strategic directions that will chart a course for our future and enhance the care and services we provide to the community,” says Jeanette Despatie, CCH President and Chief Executive Officer. “The result of this collective effort is a Strategic Plan that positions CCH for a strong post-pandemic recovery, focuses on people, and promotes health system integration.” The plan’s three strategic directions will chart a course for embracing innovative ways to restore and enhance access to care services; support the wellbeing of our people and respond equitability to the needs of our diverse patients and staff; and, work with partners in the community to transform locally integrated healthcare, including members of the Upper Canada, Cornwall and Area Ontario Health Team. “We thank all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, care partners, community members, organizations and municipal leaders for their thoughtful contributions to the development of the plan, and we look forward to working with them on its implementation,” adds Despatie. “The Board of Directors is excited and proud to endorse this new Strategic Plan, which reinforces CCH’s role as a regional leader in healthcare delivery, and will improve local healthcare services for years to come,” says Josée Payette, CCH Board Chair. A digital copy of the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan can be found at www.cornwallhospital.ca/en/strategic-plan.

The F word we are speaking of is FINTRAC. FINTRAC is an acronym for Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada. FINTRAC is one of 13 federal departments and agencies that play a key role in Canada’s AntiMoney Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing regime. Real estate brokers or agents, and real estate developers must fulfill specific obligations as required by the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (PCMLTFA) and associated Regulations, to help combat money laundering and terrorist activity financing in Canada. Realtors® are obligated to complete 3 forms during a Listing or Transaction. The FINTRAC Individual Identification Record is required for both a listing or transaction. On this form, the Realtor® records your home address, your government issued ID and your employment. A FINTRAC Receipt of Funds is used whenever you are purchasing a home and have
given a deposit. Your Realtor®is obligated to complete this form and record your personal banking information even if your deposit was in the form of a Bank draft. If this information is refused by you, then it is your Realtors®obligation to complete a Suspicious Transaction Report on you. It is also good to note here that if you are lent the deposit, the Realtor® is obligated to complete a FINTRAC Individual Identification Record on that person as well. FINTRAC has the legislative authority to issue administrative monetary penalties (AMPs) to reporting entities that are found to be non-compliant with the PCMLTFA and associated Regulations. FINTRAC is subject to the Privacy Act, which strictly regulates how federal institutions can use and disclose personal information collected about individuals. Real Estate companies are bound by this same Privacy Act. Your information is safe as safe can be. Royal LePage Performance Realty ensures that their agents are kept up to date consistently with FINTRAC rules and our FINTRAC Compliancy Officer is available to our agents and makes certain that our agents are on top of renewing their FINTRAC Certification on a bi annual basis. Have FINTRAC questions? Ask me, I can help.

For many employees, their job means more to them than simply earning a livelihood. In addition to offering a competitive salary, here are three strategies you can use to help retain your employees. 1. Hire inspiring managers: Your employees’ immediate manager can directly impact their work environment. Consequently, choose leaders that have strong interpersonal skills and inspire commitment. 2. Create new opportunities: If your employees are assigned the same tasks day after day, they may question their role within the organization. Therefore, regularly assign your employees new responsibilities and create a strategy for career progression that will make them feel like their skills and expertise are valued. 3. Don’t overwork your staff: Many employees are dedicated to their company’s success and will go above and beyond to get the job done. Although this attitude is a definite advantage, it can be harmful in the long term. For example, the employee may run out of energy or feel overwhelmed and quit. Therefore, it’s crucial to make sure employee workloads are manageable.

Beaucoup de nouveaux visages en Pro-Stock Alexandria Home Hardware! PROVIDED BY CORNWALL MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Je me reconnais là-dedans.
