A bunch of people are laughing for charity There are many funny and creative people in small rural communities and North Dundas is pretty special in that way. A Bunch of People Arts and Events (ABOP) has a new brain-child in the works and you can see it in 3 weeks!!!! This is only one of the stack of fun things to do at affordable prices for this year from ABOP. “We have a local writing team of five (5) with veteran writers such as Tom Schoch, a well know former radio host, journalist, farmer, father, and funny man,” said Amanda Burger – Board President and Founder. “Tom’s dry humour is always good for a belly laugh and his contribution to the A Bunch of People’s show A Bunch of Sketches is clearly felt”. Other comedy writers include humorous Harmony Koiter, Jed Looker (who was last seen and heard in ABOP’s True Stories of 2021), Suzanne Millaire, well know funny woman and upcoming emcee for the Winchester Hospital Foundation Gala, and Rick Ventrella comical chap and masterful musician known for his recent CD release and lead performance of Dundas County Players 2018 production of 39 Steps.

“This project started off with great laughs in the writers’ room in our first meeting when Ottawa’s own Rick Currie mentored the writers, drawing from his vast experience”, stated Marie Thérèse Robinson – Board member and actor. Rick Currie is a thirty-year veteran of the Canadian comedy scene having written for many TV shows. In 2018 he completed an 8-year run as a staff writer for the CBC TV show “The Rick Mercer Report” where he collected 3 Canadian Screen Awards for Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series. The sun is out, May flowers are blooming – it’s starting to look a lot like summer in Ontario’s Celtic Heartland! Township staff are busy this month preparing for what will be an eventful summer. Our Roads Department will be “shifting gears” (pun intended) from plowing and salting to grading, paving and general road maintenance. Our Infrastructure Department will be busy this summer with projects such as the rehabilitation of the Second Line Road Bridge and resurfacing of the roads between the 401 overpass and railway tracks in Lancaster. As you begin planning summer projects around your home, be sure to check if a permit is required. Pool enclosures and decks are examples of projects that require a permit. Our Planning, Building and By-law staff are available to answer your questions and to help get your project off to the right start! June is recognized in Ontario as Pride Month. Pride month is a time to show support to the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate diversity and gender variance. The Township of South Glengarry formally recognized Pride Month for the first time in 2021 and we look forward to maintaining our sup-

The Ontario 55+ Senior Games The Ontario 55+ Senior Games are back again after a 2 year break. The local District 8 Doubles Tennis, Mens, Mixed and Ladies, are being held June 1st, 8th and 14th. There are 3 age categories, 55+, 65+ and 75+, and the games are open to all residents of SD&G, Prescott-Russell and Akwesasne. The Competition is relaxed and friendly, so you do not have to be a pro to play. You must register with the convenor at least 1 week in advance

of the competition and the cost to register is $20, which allows you to enter as many OSGA activities as you would like. Tennis has seen a resurgence with some great Canadian tennis players doing well in international competitions and during the pandemic it has been one of the safest sports to play. Contact Bill Swinden at bswinden1@cogeco.ca for more information.

No Mow May. In addition to increasing food sources for pollinators, not mowing grass in May also prevents disturbance of overwintering insects and amphibians that may be burrowed or hiding in leaves and lawns. It should also be noted that over 80 per cent of all flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce seeds. Certain City-owned properties deemed less-frequented, such as the north-west corner of Second Street East and Boundary Road, will not be mowed during No Mow May. City homeowners are invited to do the same on their property. All you have to do is

sign up at https://cornwall.formbuilder.ca/ No-Mow-May.

With the summer weather finally making an appearance in Cornwall, now is the perfect time to enjoy the warmth it brings. Why not soak up the sun while giving a helping hand? The City of Cornwall’s Senior-Friendly Community Committee is offering its Seniors on Wheels program once more again this year — and what’s more, they’re looking for volunteers. The program allows for local seniors to enjoy a 30-minute ride aboard

through its WeCare Gives Back program. The program enables a monthly donation to a local charitable cause. Recent recipients include the Bereaved Families of Ontario, Akwesasne Cancer Support Group and the Big Brothers & Big Sisters group. As Walker ClimateCare continues to celebrate this year, Tom Rand and team seek to continue to be a leader in their field and one of the preeminent workplaces in the region. The company was founded in 1972 and is currently located at 1714 Vincent Massey Drive.

Indigenous learning at CCVS fun and engaging the course. “Part of what I’m sharing with the students is my professional experience playing the game,” he explains. “I’m bringing in a different aspect that they have no idea about. The rules, difference between box and field lacrosse, teams, and places I’ve travelled, and players I’ve played with.” Mike, who played for the Buffalo Bandits in the National Lacrosse League, says in addition to teaching students the rules and history, one of the major keys he wants students to gain from it is to not be afraid to try new things. “For the learning aspect, I’ve added spirituality, nutrition, and physical teachings to the program. Some of the students have never even really played before and some have.” Grade 9 student Louie McDonald, is one participant who plays box lacrosse outside of this program and says he is learning a lot from Mike and is enjoying it. “It’s a fun sport,” he explains. “While the sport traditionally has a lot of body contact and goals that are scored, it is a fun and cultural game for us to learn and play. I’ve learned a lot from participating in this course.” “Before I looked at lacrosse as a sport, but now I look at it as more than that,” adds Quest. “Because in my culture, we don’t call it lacrosse. We call it the medicine game. It was meant to play not just for yourself, but for others. It was like saying thank you. This is how we say thank you to our Creator. This is a game for him, not us.” A program highlight that Mike shares are seeing experienced student lacrosse players teaching others, including the international students, and providing a space for students to learn and help steer them in the right direction. After-school lacrosse runs every Tuesday and Thursday at CCVS. While this program is geared towards Indigenous students, several international students have shown a strong interest in learning about Indigenous culture, and history and have been welcomed with open arms.

Learning comes in many different forms and one after-school credit option for Indigenous students at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS) is helping with their mind, body, and soul. The sport of lacrosse, which is said to have been first played in 1100 A.D., is a traditional Indigenous game. This year at CCVS, retired professional player and current cultural advisor Mike Thompson and teacher Jen Suggars started this after-school program to engage students in cultural learning, interact with others, and have fun while earning credit. This unique after-school credit course teaches students the fundamentals of lacrosse, the cultural and historical aspects, and how to cook culturally appropriate foods to support exercise and healthy bodies. Quest Thompson, a Grade 12 student at CCVS, is one of approximately 20 participating in the lacrosse after-school credit program. He says he really enjoys this credit option because it’s fun, teaches him and others about the sport, and gives him something to do after school. “It’s been a very good experience. I’m learning about the game of lacrosse, the rules, and they are teaching us not just the sport way of playing, but also going back to the roots and how we used to play,” he explains. For the nutrition portion of the course, students learn easy-high protein snacks and meals that an athlete would eat before a game. They also make culturally appropriate foods and beverages including strawberry drink. In Indigenous culture, the strawberry is considered a gift from the Creator. The juice or strawberry water was known to promote health and well-being and was a feature of various ceremonies. Medicinal teas also were made from the leaves and roots of the plant, which help to treat several ailments. Mike is sharing his knowledge of lacrosse and his professional career with students, teaching students the rules, the history, how to make repairs to their sticks and how to re-string them. Students will also learn how to make a traditional lacrosse stick as part of

Akwesasne Cultural Camp gives students the opportunity to learn Mohawk Culture This is the first year that the UCDSB’s Indigenous Education team has offered this unique program, with plans to continue it annually and expand to other Indigenous students. “We hear about decolonizing the curriculum, and this real-world learning experience is one way we can achieve this,” says Hardie. “The learning taking place here is so valuable – these students are learning about their culture in ways that can’t be taught in a classroom.” All 36 students will be gaining a Grade 11 high school credit upon completion of this realworld experience.

Thirty-six Akwesasne students from Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS) returned today from a three-day, for-credit experience at the Thompson Island Cultural Camp, also known as Ionkwa’nikonri:io. All CCVS students who are part of the Akwesasne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) had the opportunity to sign up for this trip. “I had some students hand me their forms just before we left, very excited to be able to join us,” says Principal of Indigenous Education Kelty Grant. The group arrived to the Akwesasne island in the morning on Tuesday, May 17 by boat, and were immediately immersed in Mohawk culture. They took part in traditional lessons, games, storytelling, a seed ceremony, and at night, put fishing lines out in hopes of catching a sturgeon. On Wednesday morning, the group was joined by Director Ron Ferguson, Chair John McAllister, Executive Superintendent Eric Hardie and five Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Trustees to witness more storytelling and a medicine walk. “This trip has been so valuable,” says Grade 10 CCVS student Alden Thompson. “We’ve had so many connections with our culture and elders.” Agreeing with his classmate, Grade 10 CCVS student Ryan Barnes says that his favourite part of the camp was “learning our old ways.” Barnes said that he would jump at the opportunity to come to Thompson Island again later in his high school career.

A life cut short SEAWAY NEWS

The dangers of climate change were on full display in eastern Ontario over the weekend. A massive thunderstorm, known as a derecho, slammed into our region on Saturday, bringing with it torrential rain and damaging winds. Derechos are fast-moving bands of thunderstorms with destructive winds. The winds can be as strong as those found in hurricanes or even tornadoes, but unlike hurricanes and tornadoes, these winds follow straight lines. The storm produced what will likely be hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage across eastern Ontario Thankfully, Cornwall was largely spared the damage – but not the loss. We learned on the weekend that Cornwall resident Joanne Labelle, known to many as one of the friendly pharmacists at Shoppers Drug Mart in the Cornwall Square, was killed while camping in the Kawartha’s. The windstorm toppled a tree, which struck Labelle, producing fatal injuries. By all accounts Labelle was killed while doing what she loved the most – enjoying the outdoors and camping. Labelle’s impact on those who knew her

was profound. Here’s just a sampling of some of the hundreds of social media posts that appeared on the weekend, following news of her untimely passing: “Such a tragedy of a woman who made a HUGE difference in our community… always serving with her knowledge of health and pharmaceuticals. She was wise, super knowledgeable and just simply lovely…I remember how my dad lived by her every word of guidance, he loved her as we did!” “I remember Joanne well especially when our boys were young and when (my wife) needed guidance with her health.” “You never know what will happen next in life. Joanne always went out of her way to speak with you.” Seaway News extends its sympathies to the Labelle family and all those touched by this unfortunate tragedy. ********* Coming to a city hall near you: A big fat debate about forgiving an $84,000 debt from the Cornwall Minor Hockey Association. The CMHA owes the city for unpaid ice time, dating back years, and it’s a good bet city councillors will soon be asked to meet to discuss the problem with

CMHA officials. It seems the CMHA has little interest in paying the money back, despite having sufficient cash flow to erase the debt. The league’s volunteer board, reportedly, has threatened to resign over the issue. Don’t let the penalty box door hit you in the back side, board members. This is pretty cut and dry. The CMHA owes the money and has an obligation to pay. Pay up. ********* Sad news on the health care front in Cornwall. The walk-in clinic at the McConnell Medical Centre is on borrowed

time. The Walk-In Clinic at 820 McConnell Avenue will close its doors June 12, the facility announced in a social media post last week. The challenge for the clinic is an insufficient number of doctors to fill empty slots. This leaves just one other walk-in clinic in Cornwall, located on Second Street at the Pitt Street Medical Centre. This will increase the pressure on emergency room doctors at the Cornwall Community Hospital. Provincial election candidates take notice – we need more doctors.

From one language to another, to another…

Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

Acquiring language involves a series of steps. First, we hear, we listen in context, then we gradually learn to understand. Gradually we learn to speak well enough for others to understand what we are trying to communicate. Then comes the written form. We comprehend through context. It takes a long time to reach the stage where teachers, critics and spell check programs approve of what we write. Finally comes the mastery of spoken and written idioms and nuances that survive the scrutiny of lawyers, judges, diplomats and publishers. Sometimes, one can best show their mastery of a language by using very few words. The best example of that is “Nuts!”, uttered by the commander of the 101st Airborne, when the surrounding Germans demanded he surrender. One can be most eloquent by remaining silent, as Jesus had done on several occasions (Matthew 26: 63 and 27:12) when questioned by the high priest, elders, Herod

and even Pilate. We’ve all had our own journey in learning a new language. Just when I was getting along rather well in my mother tongue, Ukrainian, I had to start all over in English when our family moved to Toronto. It took two years in grade one to get my tongue working again. Then came French. Five years in high school got me to the stage of being able to understand both sides of the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes box, but my lips remained sealed. Then travel abroad came to the rescue: attentive listening in France, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. As I had needs, French words started to come. Later on, while working as a guide at Upper Canada Village for three years; I learned as I listened to some of the bilingual visitors translating my spiel into French for their friends. However, I have yet to understand much of the joual spoken on the back streets of Montreal or in Gaspesie. Most of it is Greek to me. A romance that started on August 18, 2008 introduced the need to learn yet another language: British. I must have done reasonably well in understanding and being understood, for we got married June 7, 2014.

TWO LANGUAGES – Britain and Canada are separated by a vast ocean of salt water and challenging differences in vocabulary. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk) I was confronted by a whole new vocabulary, words that mean something entirely different in British than in Canadian. Test your comprehension on these terms: bangers, biscuits, bonnet, boot, brilliant, building society, champers, chav sauce, chemist, chips, chunder, fairy cakes, estate car, fascinator,

fender, free phone, head beams, hoover, kip, knocked up, layby, lorry, mains, off-licence, panel beater, rashers, roving phone, saloon, self-drive, shandy, shooting brake, skip, slip road, sorted, sparrow fart, tailback, take away, torch, traders.

OPINION

Libs, NDP face another uphill battle in SDSG Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings

EDITORIAL@ CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

When it comes to Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, the New Democratic Party and Liberals need a miracle of biblical proportion to take the seat away from the Conservatives who have had a firm grip on the provincial jurisdiction since 2011. The numbers just aren’t there for the NDP and Libs, despite fielding good candidates. Jim McDonell, former mayor of South Glengarry, made his debut in 2011, taking a 55.25% slice of the vote, far ahead of the runner-up Liberal candidate who managed just 21.16%, a couple of hundred more votes than the NDP standard-bearer. The Liberals made a slight improvement in 2014 but McDonell remained in the landslide zone with 51.72% of votes. The Liberals took it on the chops in 2018 despite fielding a good candidate in Heather Megill, but she had to lug around the Kathleen Wynne baggage. The NDP shot into second place with 21.60% of the vote, while the Libs plunged to third place with just 12.37%. It was another landslide win for Gentleman Jim who gobbled up 61.51% of the votes. With McDonell putting himself out to pasture, the torch has been passed to entrepreneur Nolan Quinn, a political novice. Quinn will not squander his political inheritance. The real fight, just as it is across the province, is between the NDP and Liberals for second place. It’s a toss-up. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR There was good news and bad news for city property owners as city council rolled out its

1975 budget on May 14. Property taxes were going up for the first time in three years with the average home owner paying an additional $14 (add another $14 for school taxes). The good news was that Cornwall’s average residential property tax bill of $325 was still below the Ontario average of $365. *********** Several Grade 12 and 13 La Citadelle male students were sent home on May 12, 1975 after wearing walking shorts to school. They were told to wear “something more decent and respectable.” The students said the dress code that required male students to wear trousers made sitting in un-air conditioned classrooms during a heat wave too uncomfortable. When they returned wearing skirts (as a protest), they were sent home again. *********** Ontario Provincial Police were seeking to identify a woman found floating in the Nation River with her hands and feet bound on May 8, 1975. An autopsy showed that she had been strangled. The woman was described as about 30-35 years old, 5-feet-4, 130 pounds with long reddish-blonde hair. Police believed she may have come from Ottawa or the Cornwall area. To this day her identity remains a mystery. She became known as the Nation River Lady. ALSO THIS MONTH IN 1975 – When it came to the quintessential “junkers” on its streets, a ministry of transport three-day safety blitz in the city found Cornwall had more than its fair share. Of the 362 vehicles tested, pulled over by police for the safety check, only 32 were deemed to be in good condition and did not require repairs. Inspectors pulled 20 plates. ... Rev. Rudy Villeneuve, nominated by the Progressive Conservative riding association to

run against incumbent George Samis, said he would not leave the priesthood if elected. He was granted a leave of absence by his boss, Bishop Eugene Larocque, to run in the June provincial election. ... High school teacher Andy Trasuk was the new president of Glen Theatre. ... William Roddy was named principal of Cornwall Collegiate. He was recruited from the Elgin County Board of Education. ... A $4.3 million expansion of St. Lawrence College’s Cornwall campus was announced. It would include a theatre, classrooms, a library and cafeteria. Principal Louis Tremblay said the theatre would be used by both the campus and community. ... A survey by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) showed that most Cornwall councillors supported moving to three or four-year terms from two-year terms. In favour were Angelo Lebano, Brian Lynch, Dick Aubry, Matt Holden, Gerald Samson Sr., Francis Guindon and Mayor Gerald Parisien. ... Lottery fever was sweeping Cornwall and area with 20,000 tickets for the first ever provincial lottery – Wintario – sold. First prize was $100,000. ... The city’s planning board approved a 357-lot subdivision to be built in east Cornwall by Heavenly Homes Ltd. The board was given a draft plan for a housing development in the north-end of the city. The developers were Newell Brown and Hazen Meldrum. And two miles north of the city, in Cornwall Township on Headline Road, a 218 lot development was proposed by Richard Abraham of Ric Abra Estates. ... Mohawk Lacrosse Manufacturing Co., once the largest supplier of hickory lacrosse sticks, filed for bankruptcy. Cheaper plastic sticks had taken over the market. SPORTS STUFF CIRCA 1975 – Gerald “Jock” Dalbec was named winner of the Jacques Richard Memorial Trophy as Cornwall’s

outstanding sports personality. ... Cornwall Royals traded forward Ron Davidson to the Kingston Canadians. Davidson asked for the trade so he could attend Queen’s University. At the Ontario Hockey League draft, the Royals made goaltender Tim Bernhardt of Sarnia their No. 1 selection. Defenceman Graeme Nicholson of North Bay was taken in the second round. Bernhardt played three seasons with the Royals, winning the Quebec Junior Hockey League outstanding goaltender award each of the three seasons... Cornwall Paquette Glass Rams downed Kingston Kings 15-9 in an Inter-provincial Junior Lacrosse League game. Alex Herrington and Simon Chretien had three apiece. Gary Brisson, Dek Denneny and Butch St. John notched two apiece. TRIVIA ANSWER In April 1974 Cornwall annexed 60 acres of Cornwall Township (South Stormont) for construction of the Combustion Engineering plant. The city extended water and sewer services to the property on Lake St. Lawrence. Plans called for a plant that would employ 1,000 mostly trades persons. It never materialized. Instead, a scaled-down version was built. The plant and property is now home to Laframboise Mechanical. TRIVIA This well-known Canadian actor/ comedian was a native of Regina where his father was posted to an RCMP detachment. His brother was a long-time MP who served in Brian Mulroney’s cabinet and spent two years as deputy prime minister. QUOTED “I came from a real rough neighbourhood. Once a guy pulled a knife on me. I knew he wasn’t a professional, the knife had butter on it.” - Rodney Dangerfield.

Ontario has the worst RN-to-population ratio in the country. We are a minimum of 22,000 nurses short compared to the average in the rest of Canada. This means that when you need health care, there may not be a nurse there to provide it. The strain is leaving us burnt out and overworked without the health outcomes we know can be achieved for all. We need a government that is committed to retaining and recruiting enough nurses and health-care professionals to provide the care

our community needs. I devote my career to providing the best quality care I can for citizens with the limited resources and the voice I am afforded. On June 2, I will be casting my vote for a party that shows it supports a fully funded, fully staffed public health-care system – because that’s how we provide quality health care for every Ontarian. I urge all voters to do the same. Tanis Brown, Long Sault, ON

LETTERSTOTHE EDITOR: Vote to support quality health care the care our fellow citizens deserve. Sadly, nurses and health-care professionals have not been respected by our government. In 2019, the Ford PC government passed a law that cut the majority of nurses’ and health-care professionals’ wages. For three years they have refused to listen to us as we call on them to repeal this law and allow us to return to negotiating fair contracts. The result is that our health-care system is experiencing a staffing collapse unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Let’s raise a flag

Who am I, to endanger others?

What horrendous stories we are hearing every day from the Ukraine. Unbelievable! These brave, innocent people are suffering and dying. This is 2022. How can this happen? Continue to happen? Such atrocities. For more than a month now. I think the City of Cornwall erect flags of the Ukraine, showing that we stand behind them, and are thinking of them. Cynthia Feldman, Cornwall

Dear Editor: I was very interested to read, in your article, that “[i]n Asian countries like Japan... wearing masks is seen as a courtesy to others.” I am with you, in that I continue to wear a mask when I am outside my home and likely to encounter other people. I agree that it is a courtesy to keep wearing a mask, on the off chance that I may have the virus in me and am breathing it out.

I am also aware that, since no person can know whether they are breathing out the virus, my continuing to wear a mask makes life safer for me, as well. That’s the thing -- something is swirling around us, without us being able to see it, smell it, taste it, hear it, or pick up on it through any of the physical senses on which we rely. If medical personnel, and the servers in restaurants and stores are all still wearing

golf/dine enjoy the day Consistency

One of my biggest pet peeves is hearing people say “keep your head down”. Often when people take this advise they tuck their chin into their chest and “hunch” over at address. This is not good golf posture. Keeping your head “down” is not necessary. Keeping your head still, not down, is the key to consistent ball striking. Carol Ann Baxter, LPGA/PGA
