Cornwall Community Hospital safely suspends COVID-19 restrictions Hospital will maintain mandatory masking requirements to protect staff, physicians and patients June 27, 2022 – Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) has safely suspended several COVID-19 restrictions as the number of reported cases continues to decline and hospital admissions remain low in Eastern Ontario. Notably CCH has returned to its pre-pandemic open visiting policy, lifting the requirement to book visitation appointments. The number of people welcomed at the bedside is determined in collaboration with the patient, family and care team. Visitors are also no longer required to provide proof of vaccination. Screeners will no longer be at entrances to actively screen people entering the hospital after June 30. Anyone coming to CCH should conduct a self-screening for COVID-19 symptoms before arriving and should stay home if they are feeling unwell, unless they require emergency care. Several common areas in the hospital will also reopen to patients and visitors including the Cafeteria and Family Caregiver Centre. At this time, masking requirements will remain in place for all staff, physicians, patients (as tolerated), and visitors.
“With the improved state of the pandemic, we can now safely suspend most COVID-19 restrictions without compromising the safety of our patients, staff and physicians. These decisions are based on guidance from public health authorities and are in line with hospitals across the region,” says Jeanette Despatie, CCH President and Chief Executive Officer. “We thank the community for following our infection control measures and we continue to ask that people wear a mask and remain polite and respectful with staff when coming to the hospital,” adds Despatie. CCH will continue to monitor the pandemic and may re-introduce restrictions should they be necessary. As of July 8, the COVID-19 Assessment Centre will be moving from the Community Addiction and Mental Health Centre at 850 McConnell Avenue to the Main Entrance at CCH. The hospital’s Main Entrance can be accessed by parking on the south side of the building at 840 McConnell Avenue. Public PCR testing continues to only be available for individuals who meet specific criteria, by appointment only, by calling 343-475-0160. For more information on visitation guidelines, please visit www.cornwallhospital.ca/ en/visitinghours.

How many people from Cornwall have trophies and memories of their time spent there? The cold beers, pop, the great hot dogs, the leagues and Saturday bowling. Imagination sparks creative story books For Williamstown Public School students The Ghost and the Potatoe Party, The Secret of the Lost Scroll, and Blue Bess and Her Race Car all have one thing in common they were created from the imaginations of Kindergarten to Grade 2 students at Williamstown Public School (WPS). In May, students participated in creative storytelling workshops with children’s author Timm Holmes. Based in Ottawa, Holmes not only writes books such as The Rainobuzz, Splash, Fin, Toothy Grin!, and Peanut Butter & Dragon, he also inspires children to create their own stories through workshops. The workshops were 90 minutes in length and gave students the opportunity to write/create age-appropriate short stories. The stories
were all brainstormed by the students, both orally and visually, and have a cohesive beginning, middle, and end. “When we went into the workshop, one of the important things the students learned was that every idea is a good idea. And even though it may not fit with a certain storyline, it can be kept and used for another one. The other thing that I really liked about it is they learned to work together,” says Teacher Kathy Ryan. “When the ideas were presented, the students had to work together to narrow down their ideas. It was really interesting to see kids come up with an idea and others would build from that idea. It went from this tiny seed and grew into this great idea.” Students Paxton Poulin, Violetta Cella, Neve Van De Ligt, and Noah Knox show their completed book, The Secret of the Lost Scroll, for the first time. submitted photo

Kinley Rose, Michael Lihnakis, and Alda McDonald show off their book, The Ghost and the Potatoe Party. submitted photo Ryan adds that the process encouraged everyone to share their own ideas. “They were engaged the entire time and came back flying high from this experience.” With the ideas put to paper and books printed, Holmes returned to WPS on June 10 to deliver the books and read each of the stories aloud. During an assembly, students from eight classrooms – Kindergarten to Grade 2, heard their book from start to finish and heard the other two books for the very first time. Smiles, excitement, and joy were expressed on all the faces of students, who got to hear and see their creative work come to life. “The exciting part for me is celebrating the
children’s creativity, their inspiration, their bravery for sharing their ideas and their camaraderie for combining ideas with their friends,” explains Holmes. Grade 1 student Lillian Small’s was part of the creation of The Ghost and the Potatoe Party. She had a lot of fun doing the workshop, collaborating with classmates to produce a storyline, and said she is looking forward to using her imagination to write as she gets older. “When I helped make this book, it made me feel good because I like books and writing stories.” READ THE REST OF THE STORY ONLINE WWW.CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

The Cline House Gallery is preparing to welcome Toronto-based artist Monika Rosen to Cornwall for a solo exhibition of paintings and two studio workshops. The exhibition, named Fish out of Water, will be featured at the Cline House Gallery from July 14 to August 27 and will explore touch, reflection, and longing through large to intimate oil paintings and monotypes. “Rosen’s large-scale, multi-figurative work on these themes began pre-pandemic and soon felt both disquieting and therapeutic in her uprooted life, which began to see more landscape with less people in it,” said Emily MacLeod, the City of Cornwall’s Visual Arts Coordinator.” Thus, a more rigorous en-plein-air practice was born, as well as quiet, intimate, and single-figure works. Fish out of Water merges this cross-disciplinary collection at a time we are all a little patchwork within ourselves and without, navigating new currents but speckled with beauty. The official opening of the exhibition, which will allow for residents to meet Rosen, will take place on July 14 at 7 pm. Rosen completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Queen’s University and her Master of Fine

The rise of the Resenaissance
We´re looking forward, with interest, to developments taking place (slowly) in Cornwall´s east end. In the spring the Cornwall Renaissance Association held a meeting with officials from city hall. This new iteration of Renaissance is an off-shoot of the former Groupe Renaissance Group, which was headed by local superhero, the late Chuck Charlebois. The new Renaissance takes much of its direction from former city councillor Mark MacDonald. It was MacDonald and others who met with municipal officials at the end of March to provide a laundry list of concerns about the state of housing in the Renaissance area, as well as the enforcement of property standards. The Renaissance area, generally speaking, includes all of the properties bordering First Street, Augustus Street, Danis Avenue and the St. Lawrence River. This area accounts for 80 per cent of bylawrelated complaints in Cornwall. Some would argue that is an inordinate number of complaints for a relatively small piece of geography, compared to the overall size of the city. It´s true that within the Renaissance area housing is more dense than outlying Cornwall neighbourhoods, which may skew the numbers just a bit. But the fact is property standards bylaw enforcement has left something to be
desired for years. And it´s high time the city, including both elected officials and administrators, make this a priority. Of course we will hear that the bylaw enforcement department is short-staffed, and we get that. But enough is enough. Following the March meeting the city indicated it is prepared to draft a bylaw that will shorten the length of time it takes to process property standards complaints so that remedial action happens sooner. The city has also acknowledged that this file has been ongoing for years. Municipal officials have pointed to the complexities of landlord-tenant relationships and private ownership, as reasons why progress has been languishing. But that´s an old excuse, and growing a little tiresome. If the city is waiting for landlords, tenants and private property owners to have a `Come-to-Jesus´ moment over the state of some properties in their neighbourhood...well...this is what we get. Kudos to the Renaissance Association for keeping the city´s feet to the fire over this, but more needs to be done. One aspect that could help is some kind of tangible progress on the redevelopment of the Cornwall harbour. Now known as The Portlands (check out theportlands.org for more details) this prime piece of local waterfront is jointly administered by both the City of Cornwall, and the Mohawk
Council of Akwesasne by way of the local ACC Futures office which acts as project manager. While the website has all the bells and whistles you´d expect, it´s news section is a little light. It hasn´t been updated since February. But over on the events page, officials were seeking proposals for events to take place at the Portlands. “We are looking for three innovative, highprofile, public events that will take place on-site anytime between July and October 2022 and attract a strong turnout from
Akwesasne, Cornwall, and beyond. Applicants may submit ideas for a single event or all three,” reads the website. The deadline for submissions was June 15, and July is next week. When do we get a look at all these proposals? Who decides what goes ahead, and what doesn´t...and why? We understand everything from a Ferris wheel to a square-dancing stage is being considered. (Just kidding about the squaredancing stage.) Whatever is ultimately decided upon, it´s time to get rolling - this area of Cornwall needs help from all of us.
So many houses up for sale!

DANCES WITH WORDS NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
Houses get sold. Obviously, those built by contractors go up for sale even before the final coat of paint has been applied. For all the other homes that go on the market, there are a wide number of “Once upon a time…” reasons. You know how the story goes. Let’s suppose it continues with, X (X being an individual or a couple, occupying what they call ‘home’, whether it be a free-standing house or a condominium, and it’s owned outright or mortgaged). A FOR SALE sign is plunked on the front lawn, or posted on the Internet, or an ad is placed in the paper, or its sale is placed in the hands of a realtor. Why would someone decide to pull up stakes and move on? Let’s explore just a few of the possible reasons. Marriage: all the children get married and move out from their parents. They leave the nest empty. The five-bedroom parents’ home
is no longer an asset, but something too expensive to heat and maintain. Divorce puts many a home on the market. It’s the rare divorced person who can buy out their estranged spouse. Children: whether it be the first, or the latest of several, the cute little bungalow can no longer do the job. Once more, children, the newly unemployed adult children who have to move back in. Mom and Dad who downsized back to a snug bungalow need more space for the failed fledglings. Job relocation can put a home up for sale, especially with the skyrocketing price of fuel and increasing gridlock during the commute to and from work, the idyllic rural home becomes a liability, the downtown apartment becomes more attractive. Working from home requires a home office space, a place with privacy, free of distractions. The hunt for a house that offers those features puts home sweet home on the market. Big-time winning the lottery sure ups one’s perceived housing needs. A garage is not just for a 2008 Honda Civic. The new garage must

GREAT POTENTIAL – It’s beyond ‘Handyman Special’. Most potential buyers see it as a demolition, then a building site. Strange bedfellows and a land deal Claude McIntosh
MAC’S MUSINGS

Another huge local real estate deal has been wrapped up. A package of private properties on the east side of Boundary Road, across from the city’s Industrial Park, is said to have sold for a total of $4.5 million. With all of the Industrial Park property taken, private property close to the sprawling park has become an attractive investment. This follows the multi-million dollar deal that saw Devcore Group based in Gatineau purchase the Nav Centre - building and property – from Nav Canada. The property covers 62 acres overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Devcore has morphed into the city’s largest rental property owner with an estimated 700 (and counting) units. The highly contentious abortion debate in the United States has created some strange bedfellows. Joe Biden, a devout Roman Catholic who just happens to be president of the United States, is not on the same page as the Vatican vis-a-vis the hot-button abortion issue that just got a lot hotter. The same for a slew of practising Roman Catholic leaders, one of them our own Justin Trudeau who supports female abortion rights. Biden’s support for abortions that runs counter to his faith has been magnified by the Supreme Court decision that gives states the right to ban abortions. Perhaps I missed it, but haven’t heard of one U.S. Cardinal, taking Biden to task for opposing the Supreme Court ruling. Ditto in this country. The pulpits are silent when
it comes to chastising Biden and Trudeau the Younger for their stand on abortions. Oddly enough, the person who deserves a pat on the back from Roman Catholic church leaders and evangelical Protestant anti-abortionists, is someone who has a well-documented history of immoral behaviour; a guy who when asked for a favourite Bible verse, couldn’t come up with one. Donald Trump, as president, set the stage for last week’s historic Supreme Court decision, by appointing three people to the court with anti-abortion views. That tipped the balance of power in favour of nixing Wade vs Roe. Some might call it an act of God, that the Almighty put Trump in the White House to get it done. Trump, of course, would agree. TRIVIA: This business has been operating at the same Pitt Street address for 92 years and counting. TRIVIA ANSWER: Pat Brady’s Jeep in the Roy Rogers television show was nicknamed “Nelly belle”. The Jeep, owned by Rogers, was a 1946 Willys CJ-2A. THIS AND THAT: Ukraine has surprised the world with its stiff resistance to Putin’s “military operation” but time is on the Ruskies side. They have more weapons and more manpower. Ukrainian military losses have been pegged at 50-100 a day. NEWS FROM THE SQUARE Did you know that the mall has a variety of vending machines that allow customers to purchase different items ranging from soft drinks to water to an array of toys and trinkets as well as candy and gum for anywhere from a quarter to a tooney. The most popular vending machine by far is the “Toy Chest” claw machine where everyone is guaranteed to win a prize. The Toy Chest machine with its endearing theme music and flashing lights, captures your imagination and it is hard to resist parting with a tooney to get your prize. Cornwall Square has 2 pop machines, 5 Gumball machines, 12 Candy machines and 35 Toy dispenser machines. There is something special about a good jawbreaker
gumball. The Kiddy rides have been temporarily retired as have the 2 shiatsu chairs. Did you know that Funko Pop Collectible is back at the Square until January 5th in their usual location on the upper level to the right as you get off the escalator? Did you know that there are several job opportunities with stores in the mall? Check out the Community Board “Employment Opportunities” section. The Community Board is located on the left- hand side of the hallway leading to the Mall Administration Office. HAPPY CANADA DAY FROM THE CORNWALL SQUARE. The Cornwall Square Mall is closed on Friday July 1st in honour of Canada Day. It is a statutory holiday to allow all Canadians to celebrate together our National Day. Cornwall Square will reopen for business on Saturday July 2nd and the MallWide 2-week Sidewalk Sale will resume for its second week.
Did you know that the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) Vaccine Clinic is located just next to the Hallmark store on the upper level? MEETING WITH MAYOR GLEN GRANT June 20th - Napoleon Restaurant: Mayor Glen Grant was welcomed by Renaissance Chair, Mark MacDonald, and was introduced to the membership. The Mayor spoke about the Port of Cornwall, its co-ownership with Cornwall and Akwesasne, the chemical tanks that generate revenue for the city, and the need for an environmental assessment. Ray Carson presented an update on his recent meeting with Parks management and our efforts to have the Chuck Charlebois Trail get the attention it deserves. Many concerns were expressed to the Mayor regarding property standard issues. He expressed that if more bylaw officers are needed the matter would be taken up at budget time. Other issues discussed were property taxes, city officials responding to inquiries in a timely manner, increased public awareness in the Community Improvement Plan, CCTV cameras and the possibility of providing a table tennis facility. Upcoming meetings will be held with Police Services as well as officials with the Port of Cornwall. MEETING WITH POLICE SERVICES June 21st - Police Headquarters: Renaissance members Mark MacDonald, Pam Carson, Ray Carson and Thelma Cameron, met with Police Chief Spowart and her team to learn about their strategic plan for the area. We agreed that social issues in the district are at the root of the problems and need to be addressed to improve the look and feel of the area and to ensure the health and well-being of all residents. We discussed a variety of topics and we were especially pleased to hear that the document our Association provided to the Police Department last year containing 14 recommendations was instrumental in gaining insight into our concerns which helped their team develop strategic plans. A Streetscape Program that’s been used in Kingston was discussed. A similar project in our district would see neglected buildings on a designated set of streets raised to an acceptable standard. We’re looking forward to working with the Police Services in a coordinated approach with other city departments in an effort to achieve our goals of a safe, clean, healthy and law-abiding environment.

Canada by the numbers On July 1, Canadians celebrate their home country for its beauty, culture and history. Many people partake in colourful events, such as performances, parades and fireworks displays to mark the occasion. Others take the day to reconnect with family and friends in a festive atmosphere to show their colours and express their civic pride. As you raise a glass to Canada, think about all the things that make this country great and give you cause for celebration. Here are a few noteworthy facts and figures. • 12.9 is the length, in kilometres, of the Confederation Bridge that links Prince Edward Island to New Brunswick. It’s the longest bridge in the world crossing ice-covered water. • 18 is the number of times Canadians have won the prestigious Nobel Prize, including six for physics and five for chemistry.

Celebrate Canada Day! Fun facts about the national anthem
It was originally written in Quebec “O Canada” was first commissioned in 1880 by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec for Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. The song’s music was composed by Calixa Lavallée and the lyrics were written by poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.
and refer to Canada as a land of ancestors. The English version is a simpler affirmation of love and service to the nation. It wasn’t official until 1980 “O Canada” didn’t officially become the national anthem until 1980. Before then, “God Save the Queen” was sung at important events and it remains the royal anthem of Canada. Happy Canada Day!
It wasn’t translated until 1908 The English version was originally written by the Honourable Robert Stanley Weir. Since then, it’s undergone a few changes, including the addition of a fourth, more religious verse in 1926 and another change to make the anthem gender neutral in 2018.
THE BEAVER While a number of animals serve as Canadian symbols, it’s the beaver that’s most recognized as a national icon. This isn’t surprising given that our country was largely founded on trading beaver pelts. Since you probably won’t see a real beaver on Canada Day, why not indulge in a Beaver Tail pastry instead? This quintessential Canadian treat is a delicious way to celebrate our country.
Happy Canada Day!

THE MAPLE LEAF While the red leaf on our flag is that of the sugar maple, there are in fact 10 species of maple that grow across the country. This Canada Day, why not plant one of these trees in your yard? Alternatively, you could simply slather some pancakes with maple syrup and call it Canadian pride. Bonus points if you serve them with Canadian bacon. HOCKEY While its exact origins are hotly debated, hockey as we know it today is firmly rooted in Canadian history and culture. Since your neighbour hood rink is likely closed for the season, consider playing a game of street hockey to work up an appetite for your Canada Day barbecue.
The English and French versions are nothing alike Aside from the words “O Canada,” the lyrics to the English and French versions of the anthem are completely different. The French lyrics make reference to the Catholic religion

There are many ways to celebrate Canada Day and fireworks, community events and backyard barbecues are all commonly enjoyed on July 1. But if you’re looking to do something a little more unique, consider incorporating these national icons into your festivities.

You may have sung it in grade school and still hear it before hockey games, but what do you really know about “O Canada?” Here are some fun facts about our national anthem.

Early settlement in the area began in 1785 Finch Township was originally part of the Royal Township of Osnabruck, and Roxborough Township was originally part of the Royal Township of Cornwall. Stormont County was created in 1792, and both Finch and Roxborough were separated from their southerly parents in 1798. The hamlet of Berwick was first settled by four Cockburn brothers from Scotland in the early 19th century. Berwick became the administrative home of municipal government in the former Finch Township, incorporated January 1, 1850. The New York and Ottawa Railway was built in 1897 and sent up to four daily passenger in 1883. Berwick remains the administrative centre of North Stormont. Dear UCDSB Families, As the school year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on all that has happened this year, how far we’ve come and how much we’ve all accomplished. This year was, without a doubt, challenging for students, parents and guardians, and staff. But, with only a few days left until the last day of school (which is June 27 for our students), I feel like we are leaving on a high note, with lots to look forward to in September. Students were able to play and hang out with their friends in other classes and grades at school again, sports and extra-curriculars were re-introduced, we spent more time in the classroom with students, and now we are hosting in-person graduation ceremonies! Change jobs without burning bridges People look for new jobs for a variety of different reasons. One of the primary motivators to look for a new job is to earn more money. Others are interested in trying a new field. The employment recruiting and networking resource The Balance: Careers indicates that the average person now changes jobs 10 to 15 times in their professional lives. Although some people may be tempted to leave a job with a bang, they should exit with class and professionalism. No one knows what the future brings, and it’s best to leave a job on solid terms. With this in mind, here’s how a person can change jobs successfully. • Draft a letter of resignation. Clearly communicate your decision to leave the organization. Follow the proper chain of command and show respect by addressing the person to whom you directly report.

• Choose the right time. Timing is everything, and some times are better for leaving a job than others. • Keep an open mind. Some employers may be blindsided by an employee’s desire to leave, particularly in cases when said employee never communicated with a supervisor about the desire for more responsibility or to discuss something that may not be working. • Give plenty of notice. While two weeks’ notice is the norm, leaving more time for an employer to find your replacement, and helping to train this individual, is a sure sign of respect for your current employer. Changing jobs can be stressful and awkward, but it can be done in a way to ensure good relations with an existing employer for years to come.

Cast a line at the RRCA’s 21st annual Family Fishing Day The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s (RRCA) Family Fishing Day, sponsored by Ontario Power Generation, returns to Gray’s Creek Conservation Area on Friday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event lets young anglers and their families try their hand at catching fish while also enjoying a barbecue and a chance to win several prizes through a friendly fishing competition. A fishing licence is not required, as the event takes place during Ontario’s licence-free fishing week. “For over twenty years, this popular RRCA community event has been a fun way for families to learn about the region’s fish species, practice proper fishing techniques, and simply enjoy spending time in nature together,” says Vincent Pilon, RRCA’s Public Information Coordinator. Hundreds of anglers of all skill levels typically join the event. While all ages are welcome, anglers aged 16 and under will have a chance to win prizes awarded for several categories, including biggest fish, smallest fish,

and most fish caught. RRCA staff will be on hand to help measure, weigh, and identify the day’s catches. Participants are strongly encouraged to observe proper fishing and water safety practices. For those without fishing equipment, the RRCA will be lending out rods, hooks and bobbers, while supplies last. “RRCA’s participation in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ Tackleshare equipment loaning program, coupled with the province’s licence-free fishing week, is a great way to introduce families to this popular sport,” says Pilon. Gray’s Creek Conservation Area is located at 18045 County Road 2, just east of Cornwall. Its shoreline fishing access, marina, boat launch, nature trails and picnic area make it a popular spot for local families to gather and enjoy the outdoors. In 2021, Gray’s Creek welcomed 110,000 visitors. For more information, visit rrca.on.ca or contact (613) 938-3611 or info@rrca.on.ca.
