2021-2022 school year As our students and staff have embarked on summer break, I would like to acknowledge everyone that has shown great dedication, creativity, and spirit, over the 2021-2022 school year as our schools and programs continued to adapt. Our school communities did an amazing job of pulling together to ensure our schools remained open as safe, supportive places of care, connection, and learning for our students. We are grateful that students were able to get back to in-person field trips, graduations, and other school activities and gatherings. In July, the board celebrated our PSW Program graduates from Cornwall, Vankleek Hill, Smiths Falls, Almonte, and Barry’s Bay. The program is currently accepting new registrations for September. Based on student enrollment, the fall PSW Program will run in Alexandria, Brockville, Smiths Falls, Cornwall and Petawawa. Government sponsorship for tuition and placement support has been extended for the 20222023 school year, which is an amazing opportunity for anyone interested! The CDSBEO has also partnered with Centre

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The first non-indigenous settlers to this area, the United Empire Loyalists, arrived in 1784. As they began to clear land, build log houses and farms; their first need as a community was for a church and a burial ground. From about 1787, Rev. John Bethune began to minister to the Summerstown settlers, and in 1804 Loyalist James Clark conveyed one acre of land by Deed to Rev. Bethune for use as a community cemetery and to provide a site for a church. In fact, the cemetery had been in use for years before that, and the church has been a site for worship and a hub of community activity since. Over the years, the stone wall surrounding the original cemetery has slowly deteriorated. It is a familiar feature of the Cemetery. It is not meant to prevent visitors from entering to pay their respects to those buried there, but, rather, it is designed to serve as the symbolic guardian of a sacred space. The Cemetery Committee responsible for
this community cemetery has decided to maintain the walls and has hired a local stonemason, Michael Bettany to restore the east wall first. The work began in late spring 2022 with completion of Phase 1 by year end. “This is a two-year project” explained Walter MacLean, Committee chair. “We are presently fundraising to fund the substantial cost of the repairs to all three stone walls and the repair of many historic markers on the cemetery grounds.” If you can provide much-appreciated financial support for this project and for the ongoing maintenance of Summerstown’s historic Salem United Church Community Cemetery, please make your cheque payable to Salem United Church Cemeter y Association. A tax receipt will be issued. For additional information, please contact Walter MacLean at 613-933-3931 or via email: wmaclean@gm-c.on.ca
eligible for booster doses, especially the first booster, to book an appointment or to walk in to one of the EOHU’s community vaccination clinics, as cases are rising in the region, and immunity from previous doses and infections decreases over time. Third doses are recommended five months (140 days) after your second dose, to boost protection against severe COVID-19 infection. “Protection from the two-dose series for many people is wearing off,” says Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer
of Health at the EOHU. “Case numbers are rising again, and over 65% of people under 50 have not yet gotten their first booster dose. Staying up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines can help keep you from serious illness and hospitalization from COVID-19.” Individuals who are currently eligible but have not yet received their third dose are recommended to receive their third dose as soon as possible. Individuals 18 and older who have had their third dose are also strongly encouraged to
receive their 4th dose as soon as they are eligible. Appointments for primary series and booster doses can be booked through the Provincial Booking System at https://covid19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/ or by calling 1-833-943-3900, starting July 14. Participating pharmacies and healthcare practitioners are also offering COVID-19 vaccinations. For more information about the COVID-19 vaccine and how to access it, please visit www.EOHU.ca/vaccines.

Do you need new eyeglasses? To help you stay up to date on the latest trends, here’s a look at four types of frames that can instantly transform your style. 1. Cat-eye These glasses are feminine and bold. The upward curve of the frames best complement women with diamondshaped faces. 2. Round This classic frame style is a great choice for women of all ages. The shape tends to lend a fresh-faced appearance, and it’s most suitable for women with square-shaped faces or angular features. 3. Browline These eyeglasses exude sophistication. If you have a narrow forehead, the brow bar can help bring more balance to your face. 4. Thick-rimmed These glasses are versatile and never go out of style. Unlike wire frames, thickrimmed glasses draw the eye and can help accentuate your best features.
We’re Open and Ready to Serve You!
It’s best to avoid frames with a downward sweep, as they tend to create the illusion of a sagging face. If you need help choosing your next pair of glasses, head over to your nearest eyewear store. Stitch in Time at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum The Glengarry Pioneer Museum is hosting a fiber arts day called “A Stitch In Time” on Saturday, July 23rd from 10 am to 4 pm. A variety of fiber artists will be demonstrating their handywork in contrast to textiles from the collection, highlighting the importance of the stitch in our history. Vendors will be selling textile related goods, while guest speakers, children’s activities and food will be onsite. Organizers have planned for a full range of demonstrations and chances to see or try your hand at spinning, weaving, knitting, tatting, crochet, felting and everything in-between. Several supply vendors will be attending to set up shop in case you want to take projects home or try something new. NEW this year at “A Stitch in Time”, the museum is partnering with two historical textile experts to offer fascinating talks in the pavilion. The topics include Historical Patterning for Fashion Design by Caitlyn Wright at 11 am, and Historical Samplers from 1725 to the Early 20th Century by Lianne Van Leyen at 3 pm. Caitlin began her journey into the world of costuming through an undergraduate program in history, where she fell in love with researching the social history of dress. She followed up these studies with hands-on training in fashion and costume design, spending many grueling hours interning backstage at runway shows, theatre productions, and fashion photoshoots. Nowadays, she keeps the traditional
dressmaking practices of the past alive while running her own fashion business, Delska Dressmaking, teaching workshops and creating bespoke pieces for luxury clients across North America. Lianne Van Leyen is a domestic interpreter and historic cook at Upper Canada Village, located east of Morrisburg, Ontario. A caretaker of antique samplers and needlework, she is also the owner, and designer behind 1897 Schoolhouse Samplers. Starting in 2017, Lianne began and has since shared her sampler collection with local, national and international needlework and sampler guilds and public museums interested in learning more about samplers and their history through in–person and virtual presentations. The museum is excited to have these guest speakers share their love of history and textiles and how it has shaped their lives and continues to inspire them. There is more! Are you skilled with a drop spindle? Be sure to enter our Drop Spindle Competition on site! Starting at 12:30pm, competitors will have two hours to construct a skein of plied wool yarn. Competitors should bring their own drop spindle, scissors, niddy noddy, and chair. There will be a registration fee of $2.00. Prizes to be won! If this seems like another language, come check it out to see what spinning with a drop spindle is all about. FOR THE FULL STORY, VISIT WWW.CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

Teams are encouraged to raise pledge funds or contributions for this very worthy organization that provides compassionate end-of-life care at a most challenging time. golf/dine enjoy the day TIP OF THE WEEK Having a good grip on your golf clubs is an
essential part of making a sound golf swing. However, having good *grips* on your clubs is also an important piece of the puzzle. Having worn grips forces you to increase your grip pressure thereby decreasing your overall swing speed (tension anywhere in the golf swing will do that). Take a look at your grips. Are they warn? Are they shiny? If so you will want to make the investment of getting new grips installed. It’s like breathing new life into your clubs and increases your chance for success on the course! year’s race with lots of local participation. A team is made up of 20 paddlers and a drummer who helps keep the team in sync. The festival provides an experienced steers person as part of the $840 registration fee. This works out to $40 per participant for a day of fun and excitement on the waterfront. Employers are often willing to contribute toward the entry fee because they find that the event is a great way for coworkers to enhance teamwork, cohesion, and camaraderie. The sport is welcoming and approachable to paddlers of all levels, so participants need not worry that there has been no competition for the past two years due to the pandemic. “The nice thing about our race course is that it is held in a calm, sheltered canal, and is approximately 200 metres in length,” says Cornwall Watefest Committee Chair, Lea Emard. “This makes it very accessible to beginning paddlers, but also offers a challenge for experienced teams that want to put their skills to the test. Teams can choose to enter the recreational, competitive, or ladies division. All local teams will be offered a practice session to help get them in form before race day and are guaranteed three races at the event.”

New culvert creates long detour on County Road 2 In August the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry will undertake a culvert replacement on County Road 2 in the Municipality of South Dundas. This project, which is expected to last 14 days starting on Aug. 2, will have a significant impact on travel between Morrisburg and Iroquois in South Dundas. A lengthy detour must be created to facilitate the flow of traffic. The detour includes County Roads 31, 16 and 18. While County Road 2 will be closed at Doran Creek, local traffic will still be able to use the road during the replacement project. Below we have attempted to answer some
Todd Lihou
Around the Counties SDG THE COUNTIES
of the more common questions associated with this project. If you have more specific questions, please email info@sdgcounties. ca. Why is SDG moving ahead with this culvert replacement at this time? The culvert was flagged for replacement by SDG’s biennial bridge and large culvert inspection program in 2021. The culvert does not have many years of service life left before it becomes a risk.
Why do we have to close the entire bridge? Culvert replacements are difficult to stage. Closing only one lane is problematic because excavation on one side of the road undermines the infrastructure on the other side. Widening the road to provide an open lane further away from the excavation is both costly and environmentally unfriendly. Why is the detour so long? The Counties road network is designed to accommodate heavy truck traffic, whereas most township roads are not. This location does not benefit from having another set of County Roads nearby, thus a larger detour is required. Due to the fact that this location is on the Provincial Emergency Detour Route, it
is possible that the detour will be subjected to significant amounts of heavy truck traffic. TSDG has pre-consulted with the OPP to ensure that police are on-hand to direct traffic along the detour if the EDR is called into use. Can we expect the work to wrap up before, or after the 14-day deadline? We can expect the work to wrap up before the 14-day deadline. Incentives to complete the work before the deadline have been placed in our agreement with contractors. When was the last time the culvert was replaced? The current pipe was installed in 1980. How long will this new culvert last? The new pipe is expected to have a service life in excess of 100 years.
Cornwall Fire Service unveils new water rescue boat The Cornwall Fire Service expanded their water rescue and emergency response capabilities on Friday morning, with the arrival of a new rescue boat. The 24-foot Stanley, which will replace the 18’ Duxx inflatable former rescue boat, will be in service starting this week. Firefighters have been training on the vessel since May, completing Transport Canada certifications and practicing water tactical and operational manoeuvres. “It has been a long road developing and improving our water rescue response capacity,” said Fire Chief Jeff Weber. “Our old vessel was way beyond its useful lifespan, and to finally have all of our staff fully trained and prepared to respond on our new vessel is a giant step forward for the Cornwall Fire Service.” The boat, which is powered by twin 115-horsepower engines, is made of aluminum instead of vinyl or fibreglass, giving it a longer durability. It’s also equipped with a front-end that can
drop down into the water, allowing to easily bring in anyone that’s in distress from the water. “This by far is going to make our job so much easier with the improvements in technology, the whole design and all the features of this boat,” said Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Stephenson. “We’re safer, faster and definitely more capable of fulfilling our mission.” Cornwall Fire Service will use the rescue boat when responding to calls for service on the St. Lawrence River. These can include water rescues, boat fires, medical aid, and search response for missing persons. “It’s a very versatile boat,” said Stephenson. “It’s going to be able to withstand the waves and harsh conditions, known to occur on our waterway.” The new rescue boat will be docked at Marina 200, with rescue crews arriving within four to six minutes of receiving a call. This unit will serve our community for years to come.

Residents Urged to Take Precautions During Heat Event Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting high temperatures that are expected to begin on Tuesday, July 19th and to last at least two days. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) is advising residents of the five Eastern Counties to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. Everyone is at risk during a heat event, but health risks are greater for: older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses, people who work in the heat, people who exercise in the heat, homeless people, and low-income earners. Heat-related illnesses are preventable. Follow these tips to reduce the risk of a heat-related illness: • Drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. • Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. • Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric. Dress babies and young children very lightly and do not bundle them in blankets or heavy clothing. • Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight. • Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place. It could be a treeshaded area, an air-conditioned spot, or a cooling centre. • Take cool showers or baths until you feel refreshed. • Prepare meals that don’t need to be cooked in your oven. • Block sun out by closing awnings, curtains or blinds during the day. • Avoid sun exposure. Shade yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or
using an umbrella. • Limit your physical activity. • Be aware that children are unable to perspire as much as adults and are therefore more prone to heat stress. • Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if the medications you are taking or any health condition you may have increase your health risk in the heat and follow their recommendations. • For more information on how to protect yourself from heat-related illnesses, visit www. EOHU.ca/heat. Heat-related illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat fainting, heat edema (swelling of hands, feet and ankles), heat rash and heat cramps (muscle cramps). Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include: dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, extreme thirst, and decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine. If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if you are caring for someone who has a high body temperature and is either unconscious, confused or has stopped sweating. While waiting for help, cool the person right away by moving them to a cool place if you can, applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing, and fanning the person as much as possible. The EOHU urges everyone to stay alert and take precautions. Remember to frequently visit neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.

PUBLIC WORKS
TIPS ON CONSERVING WATER The Township of South Stormont encourages all residents to help conserve our precious water resources. Here are a few ways you can do your part: • Water wisely. Water your lawn and garden only every second day and do it early in the morning. Avoid wasting water on sidewalks and other paved areas. • Wash your car only if necessary. • Wash only full loads of laundry. By washing full instead of partial loads, you could save up to 13,600 litres of water a year. • Fix leaks. A leaking faucet can waste up to 11,000 litres of year and a leaking toilet can waste up to 275,000 litres a year. To check your toilet for leaks, add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the water in the tank, but do not flush the toilet. Watch to see if the coloring appears in the bowl within a few minutes. If it does, the toilet has a silent leak that needs to be repaired.
BY-LAW 2005-60: POOL FENCES SAFETY
The hot weather has arrived, and that means fun by the pool! BUT, did you know there are some important safety regulations surrounding fences required for your pool: • All fences or attachments must be constructed to a minimum height of 1.5 meters above ground level and locks at 1.4 meters attached to a self-closing gate. • Wall or building may be considered part of the fence provided it is 1.5 meters in height and any doors within the wall or building must have working locks that are installed 1.5 meters from the ground or adjacent floor or step. • The pool ladder must not be easily accessible (removed when not in use or protected by a proper gate). If you have any questions or concerns with your pool safety, call the By-law Enforcement Officer at 613-5348889 Ext. 232

Evolving Business Districts Cornwall’s business districts continue to evolve. We have two here in the Seaway City both with their own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Cornwall’s downtown provides a growing mix of restaurants and retail stores, beautiful waterfront parks, museums and tree-lined neighbourhoods. Our downtown is anchored by the landmark intersection of Pitt and Second, and downtown has been deemed the historical heart of the city, tracing its roots back to 1784 when Cornwall was founded. Downtown is the go-to dining district for both locals and visitors alike. Some changes, though, are in the offing. We’re seeing a trend towards self-storage locations now. Cornwall Storage Box opened a few years ago downtown, and just recently StorSpot Mini Storage opened up in a defunct bar on St. John’s Lane, just off of First Street East. This is on top of plans for similar operations at the former Olympia Bowl and out on Vincent Massey Drive. We’re all for new business opening in our city, but one has to wonder about the loss of incubator space for new locally-based retail operations. The Downtown BIA’s WIN THIS SPACE initiative was launched with the goal of adding new businesses to our downtown. After
some significant successes, it appears as though the program may be petering out. Is that because there’s little room available to start a small business downtown? Not if you’re in the pot business. Many retail space locations are being snapped up by pot shops, looking to cash in on the growing (and now legal) cannabis industry. It’s likely we have more cannabis retailers in the city than beer/liquor stores. We’re not complaining - any business is good business. It’s just not the same. We leave it to you to decide if that’s good or bad. Le Village is our other ‘main street’ commercial district in the east end of Cornwall that runs along Montreal Road. It offers a diverse mix of professional offices, restaurants, retail stores and residential buildings. Le Village has strong connections to Cornwall’s textile mills of the past and Francophone heritage. But the area continues to be mired in the midst of a revitalization that seems stuck in second gear. Le Village can best be described thusly - the businesses and private dwellings in Le Village that do well, do VERY well. This is evidenced by clean windows, tidy sidewalks and a thriving customer base. But if you’re not a business in Le Village
doing VERY well - or if your dwelling is owned by an absentee landlord - then the property often has a decidedly different appearance. The sidewalk is untidy, the windows are grimy and there is likely a thin layer of steady customers. Le Village is not alone to these kinds of challenges. Other communities in Ontario suffer the same fate. Those that have turned problem areas into thriving success stories have combined a good deal of neighbourhood and
municipal support. The municipality bought into the challenges of problem areas when local people indicated they had had enough. It’s pretty clear Le Village property owners, the ones who care anyway, are working to come up with something. Just ask Michel Dubuc, Mark MacDonald and anyone affiliated with the late Chuck Charlebois about the desire to improve things. Why aren’t more people listening to them? We’re just asking.

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
Dear Readers, I’ve been in the Ottawa General for well over a week. So far, four knee procedures to deal with, an infection of unknown origin. More coming. The following column was written twenty years ago. Your comments would be appreciated. Ah, the first day back at school! For some of you, it may have been 50 years since you were last in a classroom. For others, it was less than a few days ago. Whether you’re a toddler, teen or senior, you have many memories of being in a new grade, a new classroom, with a new teacher, perhaps even in a new school in a new part of town, or even in a different country if you were an ‘Armed Forces Brat’, an offspring of a foreign diplomat, or a child immigrant. However, you can probably remember the oft-repeated topic of the first writing assignment, the warm-up to creative writing. It was invariably a thinly disguised variation of “What I Did This Summer”.
Of course neither sex, politics nor religion ever entered into your primary and junior grade essays. Starting at the intermediate grades, there were the beginnings of an awareness of sex, but there was a tacit understanding that sex was not acceptable fare for your early September essay. Many of today’s secondary level English Composition 101 students have done enough field work in ‘Sexual Encounters 101’ during their summer holidays that they could probably write a full page raunchy essay, a torrid short story, and even a rather steamy novel, but they know that Mrs. S. Dour-Smith would find some way of giving it a failing grade, just on principle. In the weekly columns I hope to be writing for the Seaway News, not only will I avoid the topic of sex, but I will also skirt any issues that deal with politics and religion. In my first meeting with Rick Shaver, general manager, we agreed that those matters are being covered ad nauseam by other columnists, other publications, and in radio and television. What I as a column writer put to paper is greatly influenced by my childhood memories, the formal educational I’ve endured, my many summer jobs, my previous careers, the varied watershed events of my life and my most

YAHOO! – This highway road cut became yet another source of material for my 80’ long, 2 1/2’ high dry stone wall. Project is temporarily on hold. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk) recent experiences, such as, you guessed it, “What I Did This Summer”. Don’t worry, I won’t burden you with an essay on “What I Did This Summer” - not yet. If you want erudite in-depth treatises on breaking news stories, you certainly don’t look for it in a weekly newspaper. As matter of fact, you’re unlikely to find that in this city’s daily paper either. In my column, and in my other submissions to the Seaway News, I’ll try to share with you what I’ve learned about the people, places,
things (and dogs and cats) of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, as found in its towns, villages, hamlets, farms and rural homes. From time to time I hope to be able to show you some of my pictures. What I hope to accomplish is to continue what I tried to do in my earlier writings. As one of my former readers so touchingly put it, “Sometimes you made me laugh, sometimes you made me cry, but you always made me think”.
OPINION
New NAV Centre owner thinking big Claude McIntosh
MAC’S MUSINGS
INFO@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM
Funny how things work out; how, sometimes one door closes and another opens. Few months back there were worries about the fate of the Nav Centre, which was put up for sale by Nav Canada. Enter Devcore Developments. Few years back Devcore was part of a group pitching a multi-milliondollar plan to re-develop LeBreton Flats in west Ottawa. The plan included a new arena for the Senators. When the plan came off the rails, Devcore looked around for other development opportunities. Somebody probably said, let’s take a look at Cornwall. Not only did they look, they started investing in the city. Today, a few short years later, Devcore is Cornwall’s largest landlord with a real estate portfolio that includes some 600 rental units. And, it’s real estate footprint is about to get bigger. A lot bigger. Just weeks after closing the mega Nav Centre deal, the prolific developer has taken the wraps off what it plans to do with the 75-acre piece ofprime real estate and the 630,000-square-foot building it purchased. First order of business was to re-name the facility. It is now the Dev Hotel and Conference
Centre. The Gatineau-based company plans to spend $1 billion in re-developing the property over the next 10 years, by far the biggest single real estate development under taken in the city. Devcore, which owns a proven track record, thinks big. According to an Ottawa business publication, the company will use the property to add hundreds of residential units (mostly condos/ apartments) to the city inventory. And it doesn’t stop there. There are plans for a 150room hotel and a botanical garden, a potential tourist attraction. “All the cool stuff that we wanted to do on LeBreton, we’re going to do in Cornwall,” JeanPierre Poulin, Devcore president, told the Ottawa publication. This along with plans by Great Wolf Lodge to build a multi-million dollar top-of-the-line hotel/water park complex on the northern edge of the Industrial Park, will make the city an attractive tourist destination. We are not about to replace Niagara Falls as a destination attraction but we’ve come a long way in putting a shine on our once lessthan positive factory town image. The three most important factors when buying a home are location, location and you guessed it, location. It sounds kind of cliché but location is an extremely important piece to the home buying puzzle and holds a different meaning for each buyer. Some may feel schools and parks are an important factor in the area and they are for that young growing family or the future family to be. For the frugal, it is how close they can live to their employment, public transportation and amenities to save them money on commuting costs, and for others, it is that older quieter neighborhood that appeals to them as they head towards retirement. Whatever the reason, it is important that you do your homework before setting out to find that perfect location for you and your family. Supply and demand are two factors that will always play an important role in real estate.

Housing supply in great locations is limited to the number of homes in that location. The location creates desirability, desirability creates demand, and demand raises real estate prices. Do your research; speak with your real estate agent. They are educated and trained to help you figure this out. How much are you willing to spend to live in that desirable neighborhood? If you find a neighborhood you would like to live in, go for a drive in that area and check it out at different times during the day. Park your car, walk around the block. Listen to the sounds and look at the sites. Do you see yourself here? Figure out what is best for you and your family and don`t forget to think ahead. Is this neighborhood expanding? Look for a home that will serve you well both now and in the future when it is time to sell and move on. Remember when choosing a location that a home can change, it can be renovated, made bigger, smaller, prettier, updated and upgraded but you can`t update or change a location. So take your time and do what`s best for you. Happy Location hunting!

Both have continued to not only attend every Games since but also have worked as committee members and chairs over those many decades. Trì ceud mile fàilte. See you at the Games! Trophy will be presented on Saturday to the S.D.& G. dancer with the highest combined points. Scottish Broadsword Proves Popular A new event that was introduced to the Games in 2019, the Scottish Broadsword has attracted a lot of attention. This year’s tournament and workshop will take place on Friday in the Broadsword Tent. The instructional workshops and tournaments will be attended by fencers from as far away as Manitoba and Maryland (USA). The event name, An Cruinneachadh, is Gaelic for “The Gathering” and is an opportunity for the broadsword, singlestick and small sword historical fencing communities of Central and Eastern Canada and the Eastern seaboard of the US to come together for a few days of training and competition. Tug of War Always Gets Exciting Six highland military regiments from across Canada will invade the grounds on Saturday to take part in this year’s Highlanders Tug of War Challenge. The final pull for the Cup takes place on Saturday just before the massed bands performance. Make sure you are there to cheer on our troops. On Friday evening, before the massed fiddlers, another Tug of War will take place. This one with teams much nearer to home as North Glengarry takes on South Glengarry in the Battle of the Clans. To date, South Glengarry leads the tally, but every year is a new team, so all bets are off on this one. Rugby Tournament in Remembrance Rugby returns to the Games this year as well. The Nate MacRae Memorial Tournament will be held on Saturday from 8:30am to 2:30pm near the Clan Buildings with the final games taking place on the infield. The format is box seven and the divisions are U18 girls, women’s and men’s.

Tidy up tips from The Renaissance Association The Renaissance Association is striving to achieve a clean and law-abiding neighbourhood this summer and fall. Can you help us reach this goal? Here are some easy solutions to maintain a clean and tidy neighborhood and obey the law at the same time. 1. Clean up after your pet. Pet waste is toxic. 2. Indoor furniture is not permitted on a porch. Household garbage is not to be stored on it. Tidy up your porch and yard. 3. Deposit your empty coffee cups, straws, pop cans, etc. In a public garbage can or keep these items in your car until you get home. 4. Put your garbage at the curb the morning of pickup day. Replace garbage bags with a rollway bin which would protect your trash from critters. Keep in mind household garbage that is left outdoors for 2-3 days smells bad which will attract birds, racoons and rats! 5. Shopping carts must be left at the store, in the parking lot. Abandoned shopping carts make a neighbourhood appear neglected. 6. Smoking is prohibited in parks, on the waterfront trail and at the Cornwall harbour. Do not throw your butts in the river. This source of pollution endangers fish, shore birds, turtles and ducks. 7. Be a good neighbour, care for your community! Do you have a tip? Please share it with us at renaissanceassociationcornwall@gmail.com Please let us know if you wish to help clean up the neighbourhood with some friends and neighbours. We will organize 1 or 2 cleanups to get the ball rolling.

Emard Lumber says thank you for 50 years of exceptional service to Ann Lemire, Norm Bourgon, and Guy Stang. Jane in Bonville wonders if anyone has been as equally gobsmacked when inquiring about dogs on line for sale. Absolutely outrageous prices. One labradoodle was $3,500.00!!!!!! One can buy a car for that. What gets me is that in my day, any dog of mixed breed was called a MUTT. Go to the pound and you will find lots of sweeter and more appreciatable, mutts way cheaper. Dogs these prices are usually folk running mills. Who wouldn’t be tempted with those prices. Yikes.

A big “Thanks” to all of you who supported the Tim Hortons Camp Day by visiting our Food Court last Wednesday and bought a coffee. Why do escalators break down and stop? Escalators are mechanical devices designed to move people from one level to another. All escalators are subject to periodic “out of service” times due to a) the failure of its numerous moving parts, b) the need to perform cleaning and/or oiling of the step assemblies and roller tracks at each side or c) prescribed safety checks mandated by the TSSA, the agency that oversees the safety of all vertical transportation devices be it escalators or elevators.

C’est préoccupant parce que la dose de rappel offre une
