Ruby Tuesday Dixie Band Performance to being excellent musicians, 3 of the members are featured in vocals. “We play traditional Dixieland songs, both original and contemporary arrangements and other great standards, all of which are just plain toe-tapping music”, says Carole Mundy, leader of the Band. We are always adding new songs to our repertoire and this year is no exception. “It’s so much fun playing this New Orleans style of music. All of our audiences enjoy the familiar songs as much as we do!”

What’s a continuing care retirement community?

Are you considering a visit to a seniors’ residence or retirement home in anticipation of a move for yourself or your loved ones? Have you considered a continuing care retirement community? Here’s what you need to know. THE CONCEPT Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) are characterized by an ability to adapt from independent living and assisted living to memory care and nursing home services. It allows the residents to age in place, with supports varying according to their shifting levels of mobility and autonomy.

THE ADVANTAGES CCRCs provide residents with plenty of flexibility and allow for adaptive support to meet them wherever they are on life’s journey. It ensures long-term care by enabling occupants to stay in the same facility even as their health and abilities decline. In conventional senior care, the resident must change institutions as they lose their autonomy, further complicating their condition. The consistency provided by CCRCs minimizes this disruption. Talk to a seniors’ residential consultant to find a suitable retirement home in your area.

The Ruby Tuesday Dixie Band will be performing a free outdoor concert on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. for Arts in the Park, Lions Club Bandshell in Lamoureux Park. Performing together over 20 years, this group has become return performers to many summer venues in Eastern Ontario. The 7 members of the group have migrated to Dixie Jazz music from many other genres, including classical, rock and big band jazz. In addition

New life starts at CCH! Thursday, August 25th marks the 16th anniversary of the Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon, and this year our fundraising will bring essential medical equipment and a new space for breastfeeding education to CCH’s Labour and Delivery Unit. Together, we can support local families as they welcome a new generation at our hospital. By tuning in to BOOM 101.9 and 104.5 Fresh Radio from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 25th, you can help us raise funds for: • A new birthing bed: Every delivery is different, and this new birthing bed will offer the latest in ergonomic design and comfort, improved clinical access, batter y back-up in case of power loss, improved lumbar support, a 500pound patient weight limit, and a wide sleep deck to give parents more room to care for their babies while in the hospital. • A dedicated space for breastfeeding education: Your funds will help create a private, comforting space to support mothers learning to breastfeed. This project will include some new construction, comfortable seating, and other equipment to help healthcare professionals, parents, and their new babies. • Three new vital signs monitors: This essential equipment is used to measure blood pressure, temperature, and oxygen saturation for both pregnant mothers and their newborns. These monitors will arrive complete with roll stands so nurses can move them from patient to patient, taking

vitals and recording them for patient charts across the unit. Our Hospital Foundation team has been speaking with doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and midwives who work with patients having babies at CCH, and we’re excited to share their compassion and care with you. In the coming weeks, we’ll be posting some videos featuring our healthcare professionals, and testimonials from grateful families to our Facebook page (you can follow us at @CornwallHospitalFoundation). We’ve been inspired by their stories, and think you will be, too. Were your babies born at CCH? Mom and Dad can win a Date Night Prize Pack! We’ll be launching a photo contest on our Facebook page starting Monday, August 8 to celebrate CCH’s Labour & Delivery Unit. Up for grabs? A date night prize pack (dinner & a movie) for mom and dad. Parents whose children were born at CCH will be invited to post “then & now” photos of their kids as babies and as they are today, along with the hashtag #BornatCCH. A winner will be selected by random draw and announced on Radiothon D ay, August 25th. Fo l l o w @ CornwallHospitalFoundation on Facebook for more details coming soon! Your donations make a difference! Cost associated with our Labour & Delivery project is approximately $90,000. Any funds raised over this year’s Radiothon goal will support urgent medical equipment needs benefitting patients across the hospital. Please support exceptional care for local families, right from the start, from now until August 25th by donating online at: www. cornwallhospitalfoundation.ca. And please follow our Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon live from home on Thursday, August 25th!

SJCCC donation

Staff cadet, co-op student and future architect

SJCCC is sending big, big thanks to Harold Lalonde, a former patient of SJCCC’s Rehabilitation program, for his recent $300 in support of equipment for Rehabilitation services in Hotel Dieu Hospital. As an active member of the Cornwall community, Mr. Lalonde spent 26 years on the Board of Directors for the Knights of Columbus and knows how difficult it can be to fundraise. According to Mr. Lalonde “ The care at SJCCC is the best care I’ve ever received, the staff have been wonderful. I wasn’t feeling confident enough to be on my own, but thanks to (them), I am ready.” Mr. Lalonde stayed just over six weeks at the Centre and the staff were sad to see him go. SJCCC was not expecting such a wonderful donation but are very humbled by his kindness and appreciate his generosity. Mr.Lalonde hopes his journey inspires others, he said “I didn’t know we had a facility like this in town, and I’m not sure that others in our community know as well. I am grateful that I was able to do my rehabilitation after surgery in Cornwall”.

Pictured above is Sgt Van Putten, Braedon working the cash register for this years canteen. He comes from 325 Cornwall Kiwanis squadron, and lives in Martintown, Ontario. In his civilian life, Braedon likes to play video games and hang out with his friends. He currently attends Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School and looks to pursue a career in architecture. He plans to accomplish this by going to the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This summer he looks forward to becoming a better leader by developing his skills, all while becoming a better citizen for his community. Braedon will also be continuing to pursue the cadet co-op program this summer to earn his high school credits.

CRUISERS 4 KIDS will be held on August 13 by the Southern Cruisers Riding Club and will consist of a poker run followed by a bike night and buffet (hosted by O’Neill’s Pub in Long Sault) with live music and more. 3 Minutes with the Mayor CITY OF CORNWALL

As a result of the Covid Pandemic, there have been new phrases to describe changes to Canadian vacations. One of these phrases is ‘STAYCATION’ which describes a vacation spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions. If Staycation was your choice this summer, there are plenty of attractions in the city and area. Some of these events in June and July included Art Walk, Canada Day celebrations, Cornwall Pride Parade and Festival, Cornwall Ribfest, the Glengarry Highland Games and BMX provincial Qualifier.

Some of the events in August will include Poutine Feast, Pro Boxing, Cornwall Night Market, Doors Open in Cornwall and SDG Counties, Cornwall Triathalon, Craft Shack Summer Social, Outdoor Movie in Lamoureux on August 25 On September 3 & 4 Cornwall Cultural and Sporting event will take place in Optimist Park. Arts in the Park is scheduled all summer. Most of these events have free admission. To find out more information about these events check the event calendar at www. CornwallTourism.com or visit the information booth in front of the Civic Complex 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 7 days a week. From this list of events, you can understand RRCA staff identify aquatic invertebrates at Cooper Marsh Conservation Area in South why many residents of Cornwall and Area Glengarry. decided on taking a Staycation this year. Hopefully, they will meet your Staycation expectations.

SALES REPRESENTATIVE

When in doubt over buying or selling real estate, I always go back to the very basics and remind myself of the following: There is no greater or long-term investment better than real estate. Be it dirt, or bricks and mortar, it is the safest and most consistent investment time and time again. If you overpaid for your house, the people buying your place did too. The same goes for the opposite. If you negotiated a lower than asking price, the people buying your place probably did as well. You must always remember that you are usually buying and selling under the exact same conditions in your marketplace. No matter what, people will always need a place to live, regardless of what the market or world conditions are. People will always be upsizing or downsizing based on their family’s needs, be it having more children, becoming empty nesters or retiring. There will always be

life and there will always be death. There will always be changes, some good, some bad and they will both come whether we want it or not and whether we are ready or not. Social media will ALWAYS make a mountain out of mole hill. With today’s social media and plethora of keyboard warriors and so-called “Experts”, it is hard to know who to trust and what to believe any more. Trust your real estate agent! If you truly want to know what’s going on, turn off the TV, get off social media, leave your cell phone behind every once in a while and walk around your neighborhood. Will you see kids playing and laughing? Probably. Will you see people walking and smiling? Probably. Will you see real estate signs, sold signs, people moving out and new people moving in? Probably. Will people be renovating their homes, weeding the garden, mowing the lawn, enjoying the weather? Probably. WHY? Because life as we know it, still is. Should we be a little more cautious with our spending at the moment? Also probably! Should we STOP DROP AND ROLL? NO, because Chicken Little, the sky isn’t falling!

invertebrates using proper protocols,” says River Institute Environmental Educator and Biologist, Lexy Harquail. “They will learn how to use D-nets and kick nets to sample aquatic invertebrates, as well as practical lab skills including how to use a microscope, pipette, and dichotomous key – a chart which uses a step-by-step series of choices based on observable traits to reach a positive identification.” Data collected during the workshop will also be used by the RRCA as part of its Cooper Marsh Biodiversity Project, a multiyear effort to protect and enhance the Marsh’s rich biodiversity through habitat planting and enhancement, invasive species control, biodiversity monitoring, and outreach. This project was undertaken with the financial support of the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, a Government of Canada’s Department of Environment and Climate Change program in partnership with Conservation Ontario. Funding for the project was also provided by Ontario Power Generation. For more information visit rrca.on.ca or contact (613) 938-3611 or info@rrca.on.ca.

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s (RRCA) Cooper Marsh Conservation Area is known for hosting hundreds of bird species, yet innumerable quantities of wriggling organisms can also be found silently swimming or hiding in the waters below the boardwalks and in other ponds and channels at the Marsh. “Aquatic invertebrates, such as mayfly nymphs, scuds, midges and leeches can actually help scientists interpret the health of ecosystems such as Cooper Marsh Conservation Area,” says RRCA’s Jamie Would, who coordinates the Cooper Marsh Biodiversity Project. “These tiny creatures are excellent ecological indicators because they have varying levels of tolerance to pollution and other environmental conditions.” Members of the public now have a chance to dive deeper into this macroscopic world, as the RRCA is partnering with the River Institute to offer a free invertebrate surveying workshop on Friday, August 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cooper Marsh Conservation Area. As spaces are limited, pre-registration is required on the RRCA website at rrca.on.ca. “Participants will have the opportunity to collect field samples, as well as identify

Welcome back! The shrill of the pipes and the thunder of the drums filled our entire region on the weekend, marking the return of the Glengarry Highland Games. Truth be told, we’ve been waiting three years to write that line above. The COVID-19 pandemic, and the associated lockdowns and restrictions that led to a pairing down of the games, made 2020 and 2021 pretty much unbearable if you had even a drop of Celtic blood coursing through your veins. They say that one cannot appreciate the sweet in life, without first enduring a little bit of sour. It has been wall-to-wall sour for many of us these last couple of years – so some sugar sprinkled on top of the return of the Glengarry Highland Games is not only warranted for us… it’s deserved. The massed bands and tattoo brought a tear to the eye of many as the Games officially opened. Competitors sweated every event, and even children got involved in running races around the infield track. By all accounts, the 2022 edition of the Games was an unqualified success. The fairgrounds in Maxville were absolutely SLAMMED with people. Many Games veterans found that arriving early didn’t necessarily guarantee that shady parking spot would be available once again this year. There’s even some anecdotal reports of people having to wait for upwards of an hour in line just to buy a hot dog and the beer tent was…well, everything you would expect. We think that’s great. Not the waiting in line, but that our region and visitors to our community RUSHED back to begin enjoying events that only we know how to host. It means that we get it right, more often than not, when it comes to signature events like the Highland Games. Even waaaaaayyy over in South Dundas, throngs of well-wishers greeted Tubie paddlers who were once again invited to navigate the mighty St. Lawrence River along the shores of Morrisburg aboard a homemade boat. The annual Tubie parade, which took place on Saturday, saw the community in Morrisburg dress up their hometown with floats and smiling faces that marked the return of the event for the first time in (smile if you’ve heard this before) three years. And despite some Tubies that barely made it away from shore (there’s always a few armchair engineers who don’t quite understand the principles of buoyancy) the waterborne race was all fun and smiles. Public events in and around our region are noting an explosion of individuals looking to get out of the house and enjoy gathering together at festivals. The crown jewel of local fairs is set to take place in Williamstown this weekend. The Williamstown Fair is the oldest annual event of its kind IN THE COUNTRY. If you thought the party was over after the close of the Highland Games, think again. Williamstown will be rocking this weekend. This missive should be taken as a hearty congratulations to organizers of such public events. We know, through our own sponsorship and volunteer activities, that putting together public festivals can seem like a thankless job. For many festivalgoers, it seems as though a magic wand has been waved and these events just happen. The fact is, plenty of hard work goes on behind the scenes. Congrats to festival organizers throughout our region for giving of themselves to make our home better. And if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of taking in one of these events, do so now. You won’t regret it.

DANCES WITH WORDS NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

Picture this this: no running water, closest flush toilet and wi-fi signal over ten kilometers away; Ma Bell never got this far; cell phone is as dead as last Thanksgiving’s turkey; no electricity for anything. That’s the description of our island, our nirvana, utopia, Camelot and Shangri-la. I hear you comment, “Sounds like a prison or purgatory to me. What do you do on your

three-four stays there?” Get comfortable and grab a coffee, I’ll tell you. The X-signs at railway crossings used to say STOP – LOOK – LISTEN. That’s what we do. We stop being ruled by life’s daily clock-watching, repetitive tasks, manicuring the lawn, dealing with duct-cleaning calls and spam E-mails. We look about us, so we can really begin to see and appreciate our natural surroundings: sparkling water, reeds waving in the gentle breeze, something small scurrying about in the underbrush, detecting the direction of travel of the clouds that are inching their way across the blue, examining the

Letters to the Editor info@seawaynews.media

Dear Editor: In the Seaway News issue of 27 July 2022, MP Eric Duncan called for the scrapping of the ArriveCan App and attacked the federal government’s alleged “incompetence” because we aren’t seeing “normal volumes of cross-border traffic”. However, in the same issue, the editorial was wary of the approaching next wave of Covid19. Also, on page 19 the headline said “EOHU warns of increase in local COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations”. So do you think the solution to this “new wave” is scrapping the ArriveCan App? Pardon my ignorance, Mr. Duncan was elected twice already, what were his accomplishments? Did he ever participate in the question period? What bill/s did he introduce during his term? Sincerely, Federico Verchez Cornwall ON

subtle but wide range of greens in the many varieties of vegetation that encircle us. We listen attentively to each other’s childhood reminiscences, plans for today and dreams for the future. Evening: “Listen! A loon. No, a pair of loons communicating. Splash. A beaver. Then, a whip-poor-will.” It’s time to light the campfire. There’s still lots of wood we brought to the island. Ah! Warmth! Dancing flames and a few sparks. “And what about a rainy day?” That’s why we have a tent that’s so-called for four. Its height allows us to stand-up in the centre. By putting sleeping bags aside, its floor space allows us to set up the two folding chairs

and gaze out through the screened doorway. Everything else is outside in water-tight plastic boxes. After about three or four days, it’s time to paddle for two hours to get to the village. Headwind? Make that up to an hour more. Brisk tailwind? Break out the umbrella that serves as a sail. Up to an hour less. At the village, we have access to the library and its Wi-Fi and washroom. There’s a have-all-you-need general store. A church for spiritual needs. A grocery story for ice and fresh produce to take back in our icebox. Oh, how we miss our island.

A LIFE-SAVER: DOING IT FOR GILLES MAC’S MUSINGS

INFO@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

It is a sobering statistic: Each year 40,000 Canadians are victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Only 10% survive, too often because a simple, easy-to-use, life-saving piece of equipment was not within reach. The Heart and Stroke people say that in cardiac arrest, every second counts with most happening at home or in a public setting. Cornwall school teacher Nancy Kelly knows this all too well. Last September, her husband, Gilles Gagnier, the highly-respected chief operating officer of Canadian Geographical Society, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at his Riverdale home. He was a fit-looking 51 year old. Gilles was diagnosed with heart disease when he was 40. From that moment he was on a mission to educate people about the disease. In his absence, Nancy, along with his sisters, Denise and Claire and Rick Pecore, picked up the ball. They came up with the idea – along with a fundraising campaign - of a SaveStation at one of the city’s busiest playgrounds, Riverdale Park, where Gilles often played tennis. Studies suggest that easy access to a life-saving station combined with CPR can increase the survival rate by 75%. On Sept. 10, one year to the day Gilles

Tomorrow (OCOT) youth program... Read and weep. There was a time when they had things called “Gas Wars”, when the 50 or so local gas stations – all full service - undercut pump prices to bring in business (aka stealing biz from competitors). And, in August 1959 Cornwall motorists were enjoying a price war that lasted most of the month. It started out at 37 cents a gallon (gallon, not the measly litre) and by mid-month some stations were pumping regular gas for 28.9 cents a gallon. ... This was an era when city parks were full of kids. A report by the parks and recreation committee noted that 9,322 youngsters were enrolled in summer playground (nine parks) programs. ... When his single engine plane ran out of gas en route to Ottawa from Montreal, the pilot turned a stretch of Highway 43 two miles east of Avonmore into a make-shift landing strip. Incredibly, the pilot, with a passenger, made a perfect landing with only two cars slightly damaged when clipped by the craft. The next morning, the plane was towed to a nearby gas station, re-fueled and with the OPP closing down a section of the highway, was up and off to Ottawa. ... With costs higher than expected and still a year to go on its contract with the city, the garbage contractor, Labelle and Clement, asked city council for a slight increase. The contractor noted that the the number of homes served by the firm had increased 7.5% since the contract was signed two years earlier. Council voted 7-3 to give the contractor an extra $20 a day. Those opposed argued that contracts shouldn’t be amended. ... F. W. Woolworth said it was re-placing its Pitt Street department store with a more modern,

larger store on Second Street just west of Augustus Street (now Time Square). A touch of the old would be kept: the new store would include the iconic lunch counter with 48 stools. The Pitt Street store opened in 1918. It was Cornwall’s first department store. Later, Woolworth’s morphed into Woolco and the iconic lunch counter was replaced by the Red Grill. ... Cornwall Public School Board signed up 14 new teachers for the upcoming school year. They included Darleen McGee, Eleanor Yates, Hazel Gardner, Rhonda Sheppard and Barbara Cottrell. Don Russell was named physical education supervisor. ... Marcel Leduc, the youngest player in the tournament, pitched a no-hitter as Howard Smith Paper Mill edged Baker’s Service of Massena 2-1 in the St. Lawrence Valley Softball Tournament championship game at Alcoa Field in Massena. The Baker run was scored on an error. The 17-year-old Leduc struck out seven. ... Dan McGregor won the Cornwall Golf and Country Club men’s championship, while Rosemary Phillips captured the women’s title. TRIVIA: In March 1968, a government agency tested Cornwall’s elementary school children. The results were not good: 25% failed. What was the test: 1) History, 2) Mathematics, 3) Oral French, 4) Physical fitness, 5) Geography. TRIVIA ANSWER: GFL which operates the large Eastern Ontario Waste Handling Facility in Moose Creek stands for Green for Life. It was founded in 2007 by Toronto businessman Patrick Dovigi. Today it operates throughout North America and has 8,500 employees.

suffered the fatal cardiac arrest, the Riverdale SaveStation which contains an automatic defibrillator will be unveiled along with a demonstration of how the device works. Gilles would be proud. HITS AND MISSES: After years of “threatening” to write the book, Brian “The Cat” Rouleau is working on it in collaboration with local retired teacher-turned-crime author Andy Petepiece. It is called “Stuck in Stupid”. First four chapters have been completed. It will cover growing up in Cornwall, serving in Vietnam with the United States Army, which he calls a dangerous occupation, and working as operations manager in some of the major U.S. night clubs. Rouleau said as a kid he was so poor his mother couldn’t afford to buy him a good pair of shoes. The soles were so thin, he said that when he stepped on a penny he could tell if it was heads or tails. ... Talk about a nest egg, the gift that keeps on giving. Ontario communities with casinos are cashing in big time. Each receives a slice of the action from the local gambling outfit licensed by the Ontario government. For instance, since its casino opened in 2000, Brantford has raked in $92 million. Over in Woodstock, it has received a total of $24 million since 2001. And studies show that casinos are recession proof. In bad economic times, more people head to the casino. LOOKIN BACK AT AUGUST 1959: Long-time city parks employee Joe “Skip” St. Denis was promoted to parks superintendent, serving as an assistant to newly-named parks and recreation administrator Bob Turner. St. Denis was the driving force behind the Our Citizens of

From humble beginnings in the streets of Williamstown, recognized by Proclamation and Letters Patent by Francis Gore, Lieutenant Governor in 1808, to the present site in 1812, the Williamstown Fair continues to be the annual gathering place for thousands of area residents of our rural community, as well as many visitors from afar. The Williamstown Fairgrounds, a beautiful site featuring majestic pine trees and beautiful heritage style buildings, set in the center of the historic Village of Williamstown, provides the ideal setting for “Canada’s Oldest Annual Fair”. Having continually focused on exhibits, programs, competitions and entertainment representing the rural agricultural way of life, the St. Lawrence Valley Agricultural Society annually presents a Fair which has a reputation for being “a heritage fair with a family friendly atmosphere”. The strength of the Fair has always been the dedication of the volunteer Board of Directors of the Society and the many volunteers, from the community, who assist with the event every year. While agriculture has seen many changes over the years and life in general has become somewhat busier, the underlying strengths of the rural community can be readily witnessed at Fair time, in the displays, competitions and gatherings of families and friends, in this traditional setting. With thanks to all who worked for more than 200 years to keep this great tradition alive, ….into our third century we go!

CORNWALL SQUARE JOB FAIR, tomorrow Thursday August 4th, 2022, between 10:00am and 12:00 noon and from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on the main floor in the former “Children’s Place”. Lots of employment opportunities. The mall parking lots did get restriped last week on Tuesday night. Wednesday morning was sunny and bright when customers and staff arrived on site to bright yellow curbs, parking space lines, and freshly painted pedestrian crosswalks including a brand new one connecting parking lot “A” to the mall building across the Fire Lane. Well done Danny and his crew at Crossroads Pavement Markings Inc. starting at tax included. Did you know that Peoples Jewellers will be holding a fundraising event in support of CHEO on Sunday August 14th, 2022, in the Call 613-933-0014 ext. 7258 Marketplace Annex (the former Children’s or online cornwallseawaynews.com Place) from 1:00pm to 4:00pm? Contact the or email jmayer@seawaynews.media Peoples Jewelers store at (613) 938-6673 for Garage sale ads will run in our Community Calendar Page additional details on the event. Good luck to Bonny Tessier and her team. Did you know that Wal-Mart will be holding another Wal-Mart Job Fair here at Cornwall Why is it difficult for a pirate to learn the Square on Wednesday August 10th, 2022? alphabet? Because he always gets lost at “C”.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit continues to offer COVID vaccines in their Cornwall Square clinic on the upper level in the former Payless Shoes store. Please check the EOHU website for where to get your vaccine and on which days and times the EOHU is open here at the Cornwall Square. Did you know that people lose the funniest items here at the mall? In winter numerous hats, scarves, 1 glove or mitten, rarely a pair, ladies lose purses, wallets, debit cards and the favorite is car keys which they end up retrieving as they try to get in their vehicle to go home. Men are not immune to losing items such as cell phones, debit cards, caps, wallets, the odd I-Pad and numerous student knapsacks. A recent misplacement that was returned to its super-grateful owner was a box of prescription medication of both great monetary value and personal health comfort. We, in mall management as well as mall security are always happy to reunite distraught customers with the items they inadvertently left behind. In most cases it involves people becoming distracted while completing one action and moving on and forgetting an item behind. Thankfully most people who subsequently find the forgotten item bring it to either the mall Administration Office or the Mall Security Office. Remember, shop indoors, stay dry, stay cool and support your local merchants that make up Cornwall’s retail sector.

Derek says, “As an avid reader of many newspapers which I grew up on in Montreal, I love newspapers, and I think Clark Kent ( Superman ) does also. I read in the CSF early spring 2022, that CPS were going to CRACK DOWN on SPEEDING, LOUD MUFFLERS, cars and motorcycles and ATVS running on streets . OK I like to ask the CPS when will the CRACK DOWN START ? Its July 29.2022.....” Jane in bonville says that last year those beautiful yellow daisys were everywhere, this year, not so much. But, my geraniums were wonderful to behold. Every year things are different, in all aspects of life. So, now I buy margarine instead of butter. Yikes !!!! The Games are behind us … now we’re off to the Williamstown Fair!

Surprise Event at the Games

as Rod says, “The rest is history.” Rod soon became a strong competitor including a World Championship in the caber toss in1973. In the 80s, Rod, along with other keen heavy event competitors joined up to form the famous club, the Cabers of Glengarry, who trained together and competed very successfully in heavy events across America. The Club’s success led to a reputation for winning by the athletes from Glengarry. The Club was inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. Rod has now retired as Director of Heavy Events but he is still very much involved as a co-chair of the events and can be found at every Games right in the thick of things. He also hasn’t lost his touch with the caber. Last Thursday when CTV was taping segments for their AM show, Rod demonstrated that he could still toss a 12 o’clock with the caber, not once, but three times. The Games are proud and thrilled that Rod has received this prestigious award. As they say, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving person. Rod is synonymous with heavy events at the Games and obviously with his induction into the Hall of Fame this feeling is widely shared. Congratulations, Rod, well done!

The Great Concert Chopin/Liszt The Great Concert Chopin/Liszt by candlelight in Cornwall on August 19 at 8 pm with the canadian-chilean pianist Alejandra Cifuentes Diaz. You will discover Chopin and his Music in a new setting, as it has never before been performed. Just imagine listening to one of his nocturnes sitting in a church illuminated only by candles, or his third Ballad, or his famous Funeral March! Everything will be so spirited - the anecdotes, the scenery and the atmosphere - that you will have the impression that evening of attending a Concert ... given by Frederic Chopin himself! Each performance of the works on the program will make you relive the moment of its first performance or of its composition. In this way you will be transported to Paris, the place where the composer lived during the second part of his life, to share the emotions that he felt, both joyous and melancholy. As for the music, that sublime Music, Etudes, Waltzes, Nocturnes, Ballade, Polonaise - veritable balms for the human soul, they will sing their beauty with such eloquence, such sweetness and such charm that you will come to want to beg the sun not to come and disturb the sublime moonlight ...

the Genius of Frederic Chopin! Alejandra, that pianist with the fingers of a fairy who can charm you with her immense talent, took her first piano lessons at the age of five. She did her pre-university studies at the Vincent-d’Indy School of Music and her university studies at the University of Montreal, obtaining a Master’s degree in interpretation with the professors Patrice Laré and Dang Thai Son. She then continued her studies at the prestigious Moscow Tchaïkovsky Conservatory. Alejandra performed as a soloist in Alberta, Ontario and Québec, as well as in Chile, Russia and Algeria. Starting in 2011, Alejandra performed in recital in 21 different cities with the ‘’Concerts sous les Chandelles” and she made an album entitled ‘Alejandra Cifuentes Diaz …sous les Chandelles’, which is heard regularly on Radio-Classique Montréal 99.5 FM. Discover Frédéric Chopin’s Greatest Masterpieces on Friday, August 19, 8 pm at Co-Cathedrale de la Nativité, 300 Montreal Road, Cornwall. Admission is $35 and tickets are available at the door, you also can make a reservation at www.concertchandelle.com or (514) 774-9148.

golf/dine enjoy the day golf swings/bad habits in an effort to make the ball go to a place that contradicts where we are aimed. Think railroad tracks. Standing behind your ball and looking straight toward your target see “the line” your ball needs to follow to get to your target. Place your clubhead on this line - the outside railroad track. Now set your body parallel to but on the inside railroad track aiming slightly left (for RH golfers) or slightly right (for LH golfers). Remember it’s not your body you’re swinging to the target, it’s the clubhead.

The Glengarry Highland Games’ 73rd Edition was in one word “fabulous”. Even though the sun was hiding most of the two days, the huge smiles on everyone from competitors to Games visitors cast a happy glow on the event. The Games were back and in a big way with special memories made everywhere. Families reconnecting after two years, young highland dancers competing for the first time under the anxious eyes of parents, new toddlers exploring their first Games donned in their first kilt, athletes competing at the top of their form glad to be able to meet together again along with first time visitors in awe of the sights and sounds of the Games. The crowds sold out the Souvenir booth by noon on Saturday as everyone rushed to don the famous Games t-shirt and kilt sellers were doing a booming business while food vendors had lineups throughout the day. The competition and music venues were filled with enthusiastic audiences and the mounds surrounding the infield were jammed with people spread out on chairs and blankets watching the many events displayed before them. The numbers aren’t in for attendance yet, but the informal measure of how much parking was left indicates that Saturday was a near record crowd. The Nor th American Pipe Band Championship was claimed by the 78th Fraser Highlanders of Toronto defeating the 78th Fraser Highlanders (Halifax Citadel). Winners of the different competitions will be posted on our Game website where fans can check out how well their favourites did. A Special Award: There was a special event on Saturday afternoon on the infield before the Challenge Caber when a surprised Rod MacLeod, past Director of Heavy Events at the Games, was inducted into the Canadian Scottish Athletic Federation’s Hall of Fame. Rod has been an integral part of the Games and the heavy events community for over fifty years. According to Rod, it all started as a lark. At the end of the caber toss in the early Games, local fellows were invited to come onto the field and try their hand at tossing the caber. Rod and a friend took up the challenge and
