The City of Cornwall owns and operates Cornwall’s drinking water system. This includes the Water Purification Plant, which provides potable water to the City of Cornwall and surrounding area. The Water Purification Plant obtains water from Lake St. Lawrence, next to the R.H. Saunders Power Dam. The City is proposing to install a secondary water intake. Risks have been identified at the existing intake. If a catastrophic event takes place, and the existing water intake is unusable, a secondary intake will provide redundancy.

TREATMENT Immediately after a shock, apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the affected area to reduce pain and swelling. Your doctor or pharmacist may also recommend medication to relieve your discomfort.
Hematomas, more commonly referred to as bruises, are skin lesions that are often accompanied by a purplish mark. They mainly occur on the arms and legs and are common in older people. This is because as you age, your skin thins and the blood vessels become more fragile. Here’s what you need to know. CAUSES Hematomas are mainly caused by physical shocks like falling or banging into an object. Other factors that can contribute to bruising include damaged blood vessels, bloodthinning medications, excessive sun exposure, certain diseases and vitamin deficiencies.

Many people had positive things to say about Cornwall’s Night Market, which will like ly become an annual event. “Yesterday was like I was in a time warp back to the 1960’s,” local Mike Crowder shared on Facebook, “Shops were full, music was playing, and lots of people on the side walks walking to and fro. Laughter could be heard and there were even a few people dan cing in the street. It was just awesome and brought back some wonderful memories of Cornwall’s busy Downtown area. For that, thank you Cornwall. We truly do have a remarkable city.”

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM Like clockwork, the engineers in the ivory towers overlooking the St. Lawrence Seaway have begun the time-honoured practice of lowering the water levels west of Cornwall. It seems that by the middle of August every year someone in charge pushes a button, and before you know it the river starts to drain like a bathtub. Residents living near or on the river west of Cornwall report the water has dropped by more than a foot compared to where it was just last month. The river east of the dam has barely fluctuated, compared to that of Lake St. Lawrence on the other side. Why is this? The water level on Lake St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario is controlled by the Moses-Saunders Dam in Cornwall, Long Sault spillway and the Iroquois Control Dam. When the outflow through the dam in Cornwall is increased it acts not unlike a vacuum, pulling the water level down espe cially quickly just west of the city. Lake St. Lawrence is a much smaller body of water, and we’re talking about an incredibly com plex system that’s affected by a slew of factors including Great Lakes water levels, rain, snowfall wind and global warming. So, when the outflow of the dam gets cranked up, water levels west of Cornwall go down – big time. Why is this a problem?
Seaway News welcomes letters to the editor. Letters should be no longer than 300 words and may be edited for clarity or length. Please send your letters by email to info@seawaynews.media or by mail to 501 Campbell Street, Unit 6, Cornwall, ON K6H 6X5. Include name, address and phone number. They’re all too busy. The skyrocketing cost of housing, whether it be home ownership, rental or a condo, has made it necessary for home-seekers of all ages, couples, singles or seniors, to take on more working hours, sometimes requiring commuting. There goes more of their free time. Those who have taken on a much larger property than necessary are devoting endless hours to lawn maintenance, clearing too-long driveways of snow, and gen eral house chores. Besides all those factors, most of the vet eran volunteers, the above-mentioned ‘theys’, are aging. An 80-year-old who was once the founder of the Model Railway Club can no longer get up a sufficient head of steam for the grunt work to set up the layout in the high school gym.
EDITOR’S CORRECTION In last week’s editorial under the heading INTEGRITY COMMISSIONER UPDATE , the column referred to Councillors Eric Bergeron and Justin Towndale asking the commissioner to now investigate how news of his investigation turned into an editorial in this Justinspace.Towndale was not part of that request as stated and we apologize for the reference.
MANY HANDS… clean strawberries, knit quilts, change light bulbs, decorate the hall, do readings at church services. Volunteer! (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)
2. Businesses move away There is a small but mighty local econ omy that is built on access to the St. Lawrence River. Tourism operators, cruises, fishing charters and transport operations all use the St. Lawrence River for com merce. But when boats can’t dock in com munities due to low water levels, all of that business goes away. Have you been to Morrisburg lately? You can see UNDER the community dock and out the other side because water levels have dropped so much 3. Environment When there’s no water, where do the fish go? And what about wetlands along the river that support more than just fish. Creeks and streams that run into the St. Lawrence River are starting to look more like deserts than waterways. Just take a drive west of Cornwall to see for yourself. Way back in the 1950s this area under went a metamorphosis when the seaway was constructed. Entire communities were flooded out and moved to make way for progress. Local residents paid the price for that progress when they had to abandon their homes for something new. Experts argue that Lake Ontario must be lowered because it’s too high, which cre ates flooding concerns upstream. But we’ve been paying for this project since the 1950s – when will someone listen to us for a change?
The ‘theys’ I am referring to are the vanish ing breed of selfless volunteers who are the essential cogs in the wheels that make things happen: cooking, baking and serving the 21 turkeys and 12 hams for the church’s Thanksgiving celebration. It’s the guys and gals of the local flying clubs who, the day before, set up the chairs and tables, check the pancake mixer and coffee percolator and see to it that all the new volunteers know the drill. For the Santa Claus Christmas parade, marshals in their reflective vests are on hand to keep excited children and dogs away from marching elves and floats. Today, so many events are virtual, requiring a few skilled computer wizards to make things appear on-line. The apple pies are just densely-pixelated transitory images. There is no need for volunteers to collect the detritus left behind by the imaginary Clydesdales. We will always need volunteers to drive can cer patients to their treatment centres, volun teers to supervise special events at schools, volunteers to accompany primary grade field trips, volunteers to water service club gar dens, volunteers to update and monitor com munity websites, volunteers to record sen iors’ memories... C’mon! Give up some of your Netflix viewing time, surrender some of your Sudoku gaming, stop wasting time on YouTube by watching cute kittens and airplane crashes. Volunteer!
1. Property values While riverfront living is not something all of us can afford, there is a premium to be paid by property owners who are fortunate enough to able to make their home on or near the water. It would be fair to say that a large chunk of local property taxes, and economic spinoffs come from individuals with large bank accounts who live in small communities west of Cornwall in South Stormont, South Dundas and beyond. Living on the river means not only great views, but access to the water for boating, paddling and swimming. When the water starts to creep away from the shore halfway through summer, waterfront properties quickly loose their shine.
Where have they gone?

So, Terry, the DJ with more news sense than the news guy, took matters into his own hand and cut into a song to read the death of Elvis as breaking news, which is what every radio and TV station in the free world was doing. This week - Aug. 16 - marked the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s passing at age 42. Hard to believe that The King of Rock and Roll would be 87 years old if alive. Many of us who grew up listening to Elvis can recall where we where and what we were doing when the news of his death was announced. It’s called the anniversary effect, events that are stamped into our memory bank. Same with John Kennedy’s assassination and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For an older generation, there was D-Day, V-E Day and the death of King George Michael Terry (aka The Big ‘M’) former host of the Sunday afternoon Solid Gold Show on CKON was working at CJSS 1220/CFLG in the 1970s (and 80s and early 90s). He was doing his Drive Home Show when a member of the newsroom slipped him a teletype (now there’s a blast from the past) bulletin that announced Elvis had died. He remembers that it was a Tuesday. The news guy told Terry, the non-news guy, “Here’s a story you MAY want to use.” “I read it and told him to go to the news booth and I’d play the news jingle for him to read it as a bulletin. He said ‘No, I’ll read it at the top of the hour.’ “ That top of the hour was about 50 minutes away.

In July, CDSBEO offered a three-week Summer Learning Program at many school locations for students in the primary and junior grades. Programming focused on literacy and numeracy and included a variety of learning experiences to increase engagement through embedded activities such as STEM education, well-being, field trips, games, arts and crafts, and physical activity. Since 2010, the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE), with funding from the Ministry of Education, has coordinated the organization of Summer Learning Programs (SLPs) in school boards across the province.
CDThe aim of the Summer Learning Program is to minimize summer learning loss and increase confidence by supporting students who would benefit from engaging and inter active classes. Students who may be experi encing achievement gaps are encouraged to participate, as these learners would benefit from the reduction of learning loss over the summer break. The program inherently cre ates an ideal opportunity to boost student achievement, and students have fun as they learn. With summer winding down and the start of the school year just around the corner, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our staff and students back to the classroom on Tuesday, September 6th! I hope all have enjoyed a restful summer.

Born and raised in South Glengarry, Ontario, Shirley was the first in her family to pursue post secondary education, graduating from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, class of 1969. She married Dave in 1970 and moved to Montreal, in 1979 they relocated to Mississauga where she lived until her death. She made friends everywhere along the way, staying in touch with friends and neighbours and nursing colleagues for decades after moving away from them. Most of her career was spent in the cardiac specialty, leading to many jokes about Nurse Hart of cardiology. When not working or on one of many trips back “home” to see family or attend the annual nursing school reunion, Shirley could be found at a bridge game or on the golf Communitycourse.was important as well and she was still a part of the “newcomers” group 40 years after moving to Mississauga, along with being an active Kinette with the Kin Club, where she gained another huge social group. A party never really felt like it started until Shirley got there and she was the heart and soul of her family, both immediate and extended. On Saturday August 20, 2022 at 11:00am, her ashes will be interred at Precious Blood Catholic Church, Glen Walter (18318 County Road 2, Cornwall ON K6H 5R5), following which everyone is invited to Shirley’s Celebration of Life party at the farm of Verna Warden (18993 Glen Road, Williamstown ON K0C 2J0).

Yes, the event will start at 10:00am. Spirit Halloween are busy setting up their seasonal store aiming for a September ist store opening. Trick or Treat, here we come.... The proposed “I Walk the Mall” club is contemplating 4 different routes for people to walk: Firstly, on the upper level around the opening to the first floor from the escalator to the passen ger elevator ( the upper-level short course ). Secondly, on the upper level expanding on the short course by add ing the corridor down to the mall management office ( the upper-level long course). Thirdly, on the main floor following the storefronts from Dollarama to Continental with a small detour down to Cali Nails (the main floor course) and fourthly, walking the outer perimeter of the building starting at the Dollarama entrance going west along the fire lane , then south along Pitt Street to Water St, then back east along Water Street over to Sydney, then north along Sydney to the property entrance off of Sydney and finally head west to the Dollarama entrance (the exterior course which is seasonal in nature). Consideration was given to creating a course in the parking garage; however, cars and people do not mixCornwallwell. Jane in bonville wonders if seniors like me can make heads or tails of today’s music. (Except for Adele). To me it’s just noise. Nothing like the 60s and 70s. Luckily on Sundays on CKON from 12 to 6, John W. plays the best oldies since the Big M. I never miss the show but miss him! Real music! My favourite is Mel Carter’s Hold Me …wish there were more oldies stations on radio. I lost a 10K white gold rope chain neck lace on July 22. It may have fallen out of my pocket when I reached for my phone. In August the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry has undertaken a cul vert replacement on County Road 2 in the Municipality of South Dundas. This project has had a significant impact on travel between Morrisburg and Iroquois in South Dundas. A lengthy detour has been cre ated to facilitate the flow of traffic. The detour includes County Roads 31, 16 and 18. The work is anticipated to be com pleted no later than Aug. 22. While County Road 2 will be closed at Doran Creek, local traffic will still be able to use the road during the replacement project.Below we have attempted to answer some of the more common questions associated with this project. If you have more specific questions, please email info@sdgcounties. ca.Why is SDG moving ahead with this culvert replacement at this time? The culvert was flagged for replacement by SDG’s biennial bridge and large culvert inspection program in 2021. The culvert does not have many years of service life left before it becomes a risk. Why do we have to close the entire bridge?

The event took place on July 9 to 12 at Dalpex Pool and was co-hosted by Swim Nova Scotia and the Halifax Trojan Aquatic Club. The championship consisted of approximately 250 swimmers from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Ontario. Overall, the Cornwall Sea Lions team ranked 11th out of the 23 teams in attendance and 7th within the women’s scores. “In the months leading up to July, these girls showed commitment and dedication. June is a hard month to train through, espe cially as a teenager when your friends are outside enjoying the weather and other sports start up,” said Coach Cory, “These girls were in the pool morning and night training and it paid off. They were able to compete against athletes from other provinces and see the competition in other parts of the country. They did amazing in Halifax, and I am very proud of them.” Hailey McDonald blew away the competi tion, bringing home three gold medals in 50m back, 50m free, 100m free, as well as one silver in 200m back. Q&A about South Dundas culverts
Culvert replacements are difficult to stage. Closing only one lane is problematic because excavation on one side of the road under mines the infrastructure on the other side. Widening the road to provide an open lane further away from the excavation is both cost ly and environmentally unfriendly. Why is the detour so long? The Counties road network is designed to accommodate heavy truck traffic, whereas most township roads are not. This location does not benefit from having another set of County Roads nearby, thus a larger detour is required. Due to the fact that this location is on the Provincial Emergency Detour Route, it is possible that the detour will be subjected to significant amounts of heavy truck traffic. TSDG has pre-consulted with the OPP to ensure that police are on-hand to direct traffic along the detour if the EDR is called into use. Can we expect the work to wrap up before, or after the 14-day deadline? We can expect the work to wrap up before the 14-day deadline. Incentives to complete the work before the deadline have been placed in our agreement with contractors. When was the last time the culvert was replaced? The current pipe was installed in 1980. How long will this new culvert last? The new pipe is expected to have a service life in excess of 100 years.
