“We started out as it being a scavenger hunt but then after we found all our locations that we wanted to use we realized it was more about landmarks,” said Austin Nelson, chair of the event. The Landmark Challenge will include about 20 locations starting with the Cornwall Police Service building beside City Hall. The organ izers have chosen a variety of landmarks, some more known than others. Registration will be from 10:30 to 11:30 am, with a barbeque between 10:30 and 1. Up to 30 teams of 2-4 players can register. The cost is $5 per team and while the event is geared towards families and teens, anyone can participate. The challenge starts at 1pm and runs until 4pm. All teams will receive an envelope with the first clue leading to the next location. When they get to that location, they will be given an envelope with a question inside. If they

“After 2 years away from camp sessions, we were very happy to welcome so many young people to Camp Kagama this season. We actually had more campers this year than we had in 2019! We have been very fortunate to have the support of the community, service organizations like the Kinsmen of Cornwall and some very special volunteers who offer their time and skills.

Camp Kagama is a non-profit summer camp that was established in 1936. The intimate camp is situated along banks of the St. Lawrence River, on Morrison Island, and hosts just 48 campers per session. At Camp Kagama, campers are encouraged to enjoy nature and form friendships regardless of race, creed, or religious beliefs. Over 23,000 campers have attended Camp Kagama since they opened, with countless friendships and memories formed as a result.

Finding staff was a challenge this year, but we were able to secure nearly all of our team in the nick of time - except for lifeguards. Unfortunately, we had to get through a few Camp Kagama Summer Fun sessions with no life-guards, so we had to be creative in finding ways to keep everyone cool in this summer’s very hot days.

Next year’s camping season is already on the horizon, and we’re excited to build on the success of this summer. We hope 2022 will be a launching board into the future of traditional camping at Camp Kagama where kids can be kids.” - David Wattie, President.

The IJC points that the Great Lakers-St. Lawrence Water System fluctuates between periods of drought and flood con ditions. This has happened for years.

DRY?

The IJC went on to say that it sympathizes with our plight here in the Cornwall area, but it must take into account the status of the ENTIRE system when making decisions.

International Joint Commission (IJC) is a body that regulates the flow and level of the river with input from both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. Despite what their name may imply, this group is afforded great pow ers to administer their responsibilities. But many local residents are questioning the sobriety of the IJC’s decision-making.

“These wet and dry periods have the greatest single largest influence on water level fluctuation throughout the system,” the IJC said in a letter to Sliter last year.

Creek now look like something out of the Sahara Desert – an arid landscape.

Seaway News

John Sliter, president of Friends of Hoople Creek, said the situation is dire for wildlife. Pickerel (walleye), one of the most prized catches for anglers, used to enjoy a bountiful spawning ground at Hoople Creek.Notanymore.PartsofHoople

It was explained that the Great Lakers-St. Lawrence Water System is complicated, even at the best of times. Rainfall, snow, wind and storms contribute to the level of the entire system and climate change is playing an increasing role in the battle to stabilize water levels.

We challenge the IJC and other international, federal and provincial officials to the following: Institute monthly forecasts of water levels, at the beginning and midway point of the shipping season, so that we can all gain a better understanding of what to expect, before the river bottomsIncreaseout.engagement with local residents and politicians. Meaningful dialogue, beyond social media posts, is an inher ent component of reassuring the people who actually live here. COVID-19 protocols are waning - it’s time to get back to one-on-one assurances. Create a more consolidate system for complaints, so that residents and others can track their issues through to resolution.Localresidents have obligations too: Get organized. All these groups that advocate for improve ments to the system need to start working with each other to effect change. A large group with dozens/hundreds of members effects more change than four or five smaller groups working independently.

Duncan is calling for more communication.

In the past few years dangerously high levels on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River caused damage to prop erties and homes many kilometres west of our region. The decision to dump more water out of the dam in Cornwall was made to offset these issues. But opening the tap in Cornwall creates more problems the closer one gets to the dam. Not unlike a vacuum cleaner, the ‘suck’ becomes more powerful the closer one gets to the dam. We pointed this out to one property owner who wished to remain anonymous. Their response? “Yah, it sucks alright.” We agree, and sympathize. One could argue that once again we have been asked to make sacrifices in our region, so that another part of the country can benefit. It happened 70 years ago, and it’s still happening.Wedeserve better. We deserve answers, and we deserve a hell of a lot more attention than we have received on this issue. The IJC and other decision-makers will tell you their job is tough, and no one owns a crystal ball that will advise us of weather patterns and climate impacts in the years ahead. Our point is this – so what? Experts are paid for their know ledge and decisions. Elected officials should be working hard er to keep these people more accountable. Do better. A lot better.

In the 1950s Cornwall and area was sold a bill of goods. We were told that the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway and hydroelectric project would usher in a new era of modern ity and prosperity for our region. A magnificent seaway system would cement North America’s economy, with ocean-going vessels able to navi gate all the way to the interior of our continent. A massive hydroelectric dam in Cornwall would produce limitless electricity.Allitwould take would be a few local sacrifices. Towns and villages would be flooded, forcing tens of thousands to move their homes, or find new ones. History and heritage would be wiped from the map in the name of progress. That was 70 years ago – and we’re still paying for all that progress.Whatwe weren’t told is that the shoreline at Cornwall would become nearly unnavigable – the swift current immedi ately east of the dam makes boating dangerous, and swim ming impossible. Brockville, Kingston and Gananoque have amazing waterfronts with a lazily flowing river. We have a torrent of swirling whirlpools. Our First Nations friends in Akwesasne had their homeland forever altered. And now, once again west of the dam in Cornwall, the edges of the once mighty St. Lawrence River are creeping further and further from the shore – decimating local fish habitats and creating frustrations for waterfront homeowners and tourist attractions.

Residents are rightfully upset.

“The International Joint Commission, who set the proced ures and rules for water levels along the river, needs to step up for our community and finally give some solutions to how this can get resolved. We have been more than patient,” Sliter said in a letter to MP Duncan. “The habitat for all aqua tic life is being destroyed despite this bay being designated a ‘fish sanctuary’ by the Provincial Ministry of Natural Resources.”Theunfortunately-named

Four years ago a group of concerned citizens called on the IJC and other federal and provincial officials to explain just what the heck is going on. A heated meeting took place at the South Stormont township hall, where residents grilled these officials on why water levels fluctuate so much.

WHY IS HOOPLE

Low Water Levels Continue for Designated Fish Sanctuary

“I’ve seen the outreach and communication only get worse, not better, since we started reaching out for information in 2019,” he said. In 2016 the IJC got around to putting the finishing touches on Plan 2014, a document that spells out plans to mitigate some of the shortcomings of previous regulation regimes related to the shoreline environment, while striving to main tain the benefits to other interests and users in the system.

Two weeks ago, in this space we focused on the low-water levels plaguing our region west of Cornwall. We touched a nerve. “These constant recurring low water levels are rightfully very frustrating for residents and businesses along our part of the St. Lawrence River. There is little to no communications or reasoning provided, and sadly, the drastically low water levels are becoming more common each summer,” said Stormont, Dundas, South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan. “Something needs to change…From a safety perspective, it’s hurting the tourism and boating industry in this section of the river and affecting property values and access to the river.”

Dear editor: For what it is worth, I think this is the goo fyish idea I have ever heard of. Our city is plagued with substandard hous ing and properties that city officials don’t give a hoot about, and now someone is giving substandard property owners a free ride when their properties grow more unsightly.

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

I hope the next Mayor has the courage to enforce property standards bylaws. Older houses should either be torn down or brought up to standard within city bylaws, and, within a set period of time. What’s the use of having bylaws that are not enforced?

Suicide is a difficult subject to talk about. However, when someone talks about suicide or mentions that they are worried about someone close to them, it is important to act and get help quickly. What is suicide? Suicide means that someone ends their life on purpose. It is important to know that people who die by sui cide or attempt suicide do not necessarily want to die. However, they think that suicide is the only solution to deal with difficult feel ings or situations. Who is affected? The World Health Organization estimates that about 700,000 people take their own lives every year and many more attempt to do so. In Canada, an average of 11 people die by suicide every day, bringing the annual total to about 4,000. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadians between the ages of 15 and 24 (the first cause is accidents and pre ventableSuicideinjuries.).isaserious problem, which is why mental health professionals celebrated when World Suicide Prevention Day was estab lished in 2003. It is now celebrated every year on September 10th. They emphasize that suicide can be prevented with better awareness of the problem and intervention. Help is available Once you have identified a person in distress, you can take steps to prevent suicide. To begin with, you should ask the person directly if they are thinking about suicide. Talking about suicide will not make them think about taking their life. But if they are seriously thinking about it, they may be relieved to talk to you about it. Find out if they have a plan in place, and then listen to them in an empathetic and non-judgmental way. Don’t minimize their feelings and don’t be sworn to secrecy. In fact, you should get sup port from family and friends and seek profes sional help if necessary. If they have a plan and are thinking of carrying it out soon, it is important to contact crisis intervention or support services. A family physician can help, as can a men tal health professional. When suicide appears imminent, a visit to a hospital emergency room can be a life-saving intervention. There is also a mental health crisis line you can call at 1-866-996-0991. Stay with this person while you call and do not leave until the crisis line staff tells you that you can. Listening and helping this person connect with mental health services are the two most important things you can do to help. If you have identified a person at risk of suicide and need guidance on how to help them, you can sign up for a training program offered by LivingWorks, an Alberta-based social enterprise. You can also check out the resources offered by the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Champlain East. DO YOU NEED MORE HELP? Contact a community organization like the Canadian Mental Health Association to learn more about support and resources in your area. The information provided is not a substitute for professional advice. “Taking lots of shots?” asked my pilot “Not yet, I’m trying to change the film.” I replied, followed by an excruciatingly long pause. “Ready now?” “No, having trouble getting the camera case off. Still working at it.” There was a shallow knurled knob securing the camera to the case. It had been overtightened. It didn’t provide enough purchase to loosen it. There was no vise-grip tool available.I’msweating, the pilots are beginning to XX#8!!#! at me. Aha! Eureka! I have it! My note pad was secured by a hefty binder clip [see photograph].Havingnoticed a hole in the side of the knob, I removed one of the hefty wire clips, inserted it into the hole and used it to free the knob and case so I could change the film. The photo shoot was delayed, but a success. Thinking out of the box is a must. Make do. Improvise. Find a substitute.

Forgot to bring the canoe paddles back to the cottage? Find two shovels and pad dleOnaway!the drive to the cottage, Highway 401 was at a standstill. Accident? No. Construction? Not that either. A very large snapping turtle was bask ing on the warm asphalt. Solution: take out the car’s rubber floor mat, approach the snapper from behind, then slip it over her back like a saddle. Her legs will futilely flail about. Fortunately, her neck is not as long as a giraffe’s, so there’s no danger of being bitten.Grasp the sides firmly and deposit the roadblock far off to the side. If it’s a smaller turtle, slide the canoe paddle (the one you forgot to take to the cottage last week) under him, and carry him far off to the side of the road, as if he were a pizza being taken out of the oven on a peel *. Back in the days of 35mm film, I was doing an air-to-air photo shoot of an aircraft.Thehighly polished subject aircraft posed and waggled its wings, causing the brilliant sunshine to flash as if it were equipped with strobe lights. As soon as it got into just the right pos ition, I took my first shot, the last frame on the 36-exposure cassette.

We are a group of Seniors who bring our coffee and lawn chair every morning and gather near the bike path overlooking marina!Itisindeed a pleasure to see so many fam ilies, seniors and pedestrians enjoying their morning walk on the bike path!

However, recently I noticed racing bikes and ebikes proceeding at high rates of speed, without a bell or sounding device to warn ped estrians of their approach! Seniors and pedestrians are vulnerable to approaching bikes! Please be cautious to all on bike paths, it was created for all to enjoy! Maybe a third wider lane could be created for pedestrians and joggers! Please be courteous to all on the bike path!

Eight years ago I was one of the Cornwall City Councillors to allow wheel chairs and ebikes to proceed to enjoy the bike path and our beautiful waterfront!

KRYSTINE THERRIAULT ktherriault@seawaynews.mediaFromAugust23to26, Cornwall resident Jennifer Fullerton provided autism awareness training to local fire fighters. As of Friday, Fullerton has given 30 such free trainings in Eastern Ontario. Her last official training with our local fire department was six years ago. Jennifer Fullerton has a master’s degree in education and teaches at Bridgewood Public School. She has a daughter with nonverbal autism, and before having her daughter she taught special education classes.

“People with autism are seven times more likely to have encounters with first respond ers,” Fullerton explained when asked what inspired her start doing these trainings, “Should my daughter be in a situation where I can’t talk for her, if the first responders are aware and pick up on the signs of somebody with autism, they can assess the situation to help calm her down or soo th her.” Present for the training was retired inspector for the Cornwall Police Service, Bob Burnie. Bob has a 42-year-old son with autism and has seen firsthand how well meaning first respond ers can misinterpret the signs of autism. Fullerton has invited him to several of her train ings because even though they both have chil dren on the spectrum, they are a great example that each individual with autism is different.

What I can offer is my experi ence, leadership, and a proven track record that I can bring people together and an ability to get things done. The residents of South Stormont have put their faith and confidence in me and gave me the honor to serve as the mayor for a total of (12 years) 3 terms. “What bothered me most about this com ment was that it’s almost a form of greenwash ing because you’re making it seem like all the products are green but really in the back ware house you’re taking stuff apart, and that’s not how we function,” Julie explains, “As a store we’re reinventing the wheel because a lot of bulk products are really difficult to get package free. There’s a lot of work involved in asking a supplier to do these special things and get them to understand why we want it package free because a lot of the time they’re saying, ‘just take it out of the package and the cus tomer won’t be the wiser’ but we can’t do that. It defeats the entire purpose.” Julie shared that most of her suppliers are Canadian based, with many from Montreal and Toronto. Although she’s had to negotiate with suppliers for less packaging in the past, this was the first time she was taken aback by a supplier’s response. “It’s just hurting everybody else whenever suppliers try to blindside customers and say that stuff is package free when it really isn’t,” she adds, “So we, as consumers, need to do our own research and really think about how we purchase our food and products

When asked if he had any advice for new trustees, Eamer said, “The biggest thing is to savor every moment, appreciate what staff does for the students every single day, and provide the enthusiasm and support neces sary for Thanksuccess.”youforeverything you have done dur ing your years of service, Ron Eamer! RON EAMER because a lot of times, were not getting the truth.”

In his time as a trustee, Eamer has been fortunate enough to witness the expansion and modernization of the Catholic School Board system and play an integral role in its growth and success. The amalgamation of school boards in 1998 is one example, when the SDG Roman Catholic Separate School Board transitioned to the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. He also saw the role of trustee change over the years from one of active decision-making to one of gener al Onegovernance.thingthat has not changed over the years is the trustees’ responsibility to ensure student success.

Looking back, Eamer shared several high lights during his time as a trustee. One of those is when they were finally able to build Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School after challenges with finding the right location and then negotiating with the City for water and sewer services. His pride in the school is evi dent when he speaks of its success and strong sense of school spirit.

“41 years is a long time,” Eamer said when asked what made him decide not to run again, “There comes a time when there are younger people out there with a vision of what they can do in the future, as I started with. They’re going to bring new energy to the board, new insights, and I’m sure that we’ll see the board prosper under their leadership.”

Overall, Eamer’s 41 years as a trustee has been a rewarding experience. “As I meet stu dents on the street, they recognize me. I see them growing up, how successful they are, and I know that we’ve done a good job. I see the loyalty they have to their schools after they graduate – I like that.”

KRYSTINE THERRIAULT ktherriault@seawaynews.mediaTheLocalFill,located on 1515 Pitt St, recently celebrated its three-year anniversary. Founded by Julie Dennis in 2019, The Local Fill is the first zero waste refill market of its kind in the Afterarea.making frequent trips to Ottawa to shop at a refill market, Julie decided to leave her career in interior design and open a busi ness. Her mission is to give the people of Cornwall the opportunity to reduce waste and shop locally for eco-friendly, sustainable prod ucts. The shop is always updating its offerings with cool and innovative, environmentally friendly products in categories that include bulk food, cleaning, personal care, pet, and to-go showed the community that she is truly committed to her mission to reduce single use plastic. In a Facebook post, she shared that a supplier tried to convince her to buy individually wrapped products. They even told her that she should remove the wrappers and hide the evidence before placing the prod ucts on her shelves. Her response to the supplier in question was, “I like to think of myself as the gate keep er to all products sold in the store. If it’s tested on animals, contains harmful ingredients or is wrapped in plastic, it doesn’t make it on our shelves.”“Ifgovernments aren’t going to step in and make definite and urgent changes, then it’s up to us. I won’t stand by and watch,” wrote Julie. Greenwashing is a term used to describe com panies that use marketing tactics to make themselves appear more environmentally friendly than they are. A couple good examples of greenwashing are: •when grocery stores unwrap produce in the back before placing it on the shelves ‘package free’•sanitary wipes that are marketed as ‘flush able’ but wreak havoc on plumbing.

A second, more recent highlight is the com pletion of the St. Joes Complex on Cumberland Street. With Sacred Heart moved over, they have created a school where students can start at one end in JK and graduate from Grade 12 at the opposite end.

Canadian Catholic School Trustees Association. Over the years, we were fortunate to be able to bring them to Cornwall for their annual general meetings … They were amazed that we had so much local history and that it went back so far.”

“We have to monitor that on a regular basis and make sure we are providing students with what they need to succeed,” explained Eamer, “In our local area, we are blessed with some of the best employees, the best senior admin istration, the best principals, teachers, main tenance staff, and support staff. We’ve really been fortunate. I can only say that I truly appre ciate everything that they’ve done for us over theInyears.”histime as trustee, Eamer met people from coast to coast who dedicated their lives to Catholic Education and it was a pleasure for him to work with these individuals.

1. What is Tiger Woods’ real first name?

Are you like 80% of golfers who tend to slice their tee shots? One quick solution for many is to ensure you are making a FULL turn at the top of your backswing. This means both of your shoulder blades should be facing the target when you’re at the top of your swing. Both shoulders should turn together so that your target shoulder is in line (or slightly behind) the golf ball and your non-target shoulder is behind your head. Practice the move while standing upright and you’ll get the feeling required to make a full turn with both shoulders working in unison. Now tilt and put that same turn to work for you and kill that slice! Dr. Ahmed Asholi is an ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery alongside Dr. Tarek Youssef, but also treats diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and different retina diseases.Together they bring more than 25 years of experience and formal education and train ing. Each physician has relocated closer to the area or is in the process of relocating to practise at CCH, having been partly drawn to the hospital’s modern facility and the benefits of practising in a smaller community.

The Summerstown Forest trails saw a great increase in visitation at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and visitation has not slowed down. Over the last year, no less than 22,613 visitors were recorded at the trails thanks to a “people counter” installed with the assistance of the Raisin Region Conservation Authority.

The FOTST, a volunteer organization, main tains the trails year-round and offers various events and programs for the public. Their Annual Family Day Event and various races held throughout the year are very popular initiatives. FOTST also offers beginner learnto-ski programs for all ages taught by certified instructors. “We could not accomplish all that we do without the dedication of our vol un-teers and the support of our members, donors and partners,” concluded FOTST president, Vic Leroux. “We always welcome Great Numbers for the Trails can help, BUT… We need your name, phone number, address and postal code. call and at us! 613-933-0014ext7258

“I look forward to joining the community and working together with the excellent CCH team to provide the best care possible,” says Dr.Dr.Schmid.Godbout adds that he “puts a lot of effort into ensuring that my patients are safe, comfortable and well cared for. I hope to bring as much positivity as possible to the hospital andAccordingcommunity.”toDr. Asholi, he is “looking for ward to treating my new patients at CCH and working alongside the staff and physicians,” adding he “also believes the move to the area will be positive for me and my family.” CCH hopes to welcome more physicians in the near future as the hospital continues its recruitment efforts to meet the needs of the community and help lead innovative health care delivery in Eastern Ontario. CCH is home to six state-of-the-art surgical suites which were constructed during the hos pital’s capital redevelopment project in 2014. Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, CCH safely performed nearly 5,000 urgent and non-urgent surgical procedures in 2021-2022, and expects that number will be higher next year.

Once known as a winter playground for cross-country skiers and snowshoers, the trails are now a popular site year-round par ticularly with the addition of fat biking trails. Trail users, however, do not require special equipment to enjoy the trails. Exploring the trails on foot is also a great way to step into nature and enjoy the beauty of the forest. Summerstown Forest offers 30 kilometres of trails which are mainly owned by the United Counties of SDG, with a smaller parcel owned by the province. “Conserving forests and offering recreational opportunities to the community are very important to SDG. We are grateful for the Friends of Summerstown Trails (FOTST) and their efforts to maintain and enhance the trails,” stated Benjamin De Haan, Director of Transportation and Planning.

“As communities across Ontario continue to struggle with physician shortages, we are excited to welcome Dr. Godbout, Dr. Asholi and Dr. Schmid to our Operating Room, where they will work with our committed team towards restoring and enhancing access to surgical care,” says Jeanette Despatie, CCH President and Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Sarah Schmid performs a broad range of general surgery including endoscopy, min imally invasive surgery and management of colorectal/anorectal concerns. She had been providing temporary coverage at CCH since last year before joining the team full-time.

A single mother wakes up from a long coma after giving birth to twins. She asks the doctor “Where are my babies? I want to see my babies!” The doctor says “Not to worry, your babies are safe and at home with your brother. You had two healthy babies, one boy, and one girl, but unfortu nately I do have some bad news.” Immediately thinking the worst, the mother asks “Oh my God, what’s wrong?” “Well, you were recovering for a long time,” the doctor says solemnly, “we had to give the children a name. Your brother chose them...” Shocked, the mother asks “What did he name the girl?” The doctor lets out a sigh and says “Denise.” “Oh!” The mother says, “That’s a lovely name, what about the boy?” The doctor places a hand on the mother’s shoulder, shaking his head he says... “Denephew.”

I would like to thank the really nice couple I met at No Frills over a shopping cart. I asked to bring it back to the store, I had a token, they had a dollar. The man said I could just have it, they are both sweethearts. I will and I have done the same. At the checkout if someone only has a few things in their cart, i will let them go ahead of me. I also let staff go before me, as I know they only have a short break.Ifyou like cleaning windows as much as I do, try using swiffer wet pads. They work won ders on windows as well as your floors. Do I still like doing windows? NO, but I do like this.

A thumbs up to the people you occasionally see picking up garbage along Highway #2. Your effort to keep the area clean is appreci ated. A thumbs down to people who throw their garbage out their vehicle windows, lit tering the roadways. You are basically pollut ing the environment, plus it is an eyesore. Dispose of your garbage at home. It must be discouraging for the people who pick up the litter to go back the next week and see gar bage along the road

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Jane in Bonville says she is being attacked. First by those tiny wasps that hoover right in front of you and a barrage of oak nuts that, with the slightest breeze, land on my porch tin roof. It’s like a machine gun attack. 10 days ago planted a whole pack of yellow beans. They are already up 3 inches. May be my best crop of this year. As you may surmise, my life is quite boring this time of
