Cline House Gallery is pleased to present Woven Woods: A Journey through the Forest Floor by scientist turned textile artist, Lorraine Roy. As part of a Canada-wide tour, her unique exhibition of 12 oversized quilted wall hangings will make its Eastern Ontario debut in Cornwall on September 8, 2022, and will run until October 29. “We are delighted to host Lorraine and her work in Cornwall,” says Emily MacLeod, Visual Arts Coordinator, Cline House. “Her incredibly intricate pieces truly put the spotlight on nature’sThroughwonders.”WovenWoods, Roy explores the interconnect edness of art, science, and nature using raw edge machine appliqué techniques and embroidery. With a B.Sc. in Horticultural Sciences and decades of explora tion in art textiles, the Dundas, Ontario artist spent five years realizing her vision and approached the unique series with an eye toward what lies beneath the surface of the forest floor. The results are beautiful, oversized, and infused with the symbolism of trees and their com munication patterns. Roy’s exhibit will also be complemented by the work of esteemed artist Carmella Karijo Rother. The Gatineau, Quebec artist has been creating simple and sophisticated organically shaped vessels of rope and other textiles for more than two decades. Her Affinities exhibit will highlight both previously produced and new works. Roy and Rother will be present at Cline House during the Apples and Art Studio Tour weekend running from September 24 and 25, 2022.

Overwhelming support from local South Glengarry businesses sponsoring the 2022 Business and Community Awards Gala surpass numbers seen in the past seventeen years. This local tradition began in 2005, providing an opportunity for Township citizens to nominate local businesses, groups or individuals deserving of recognition for their business excellence, customer service or contribution to their “Beingcommunity.anewcomer at the Township Office, tasked with planning the first Awards Gala since the Pandemic, I really wanted this year’s event to be successful,” said Economic Development Officer, Jennifer Treverton. “As the number of local businesses sponsoring the Gala continued to rise, I thought, what a wonderful and supportive community!”

The 14th edition of the South Glengarry Business and Community Awards Gala is being held on Saturday, September 24th in the Tartan Hall, at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre. Cocktail will be served 6-7:00pm, with dinner and awards to follow. On behalf of Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation, I want to express grati tude to everyone who helped surpass our recent fundraising goals, raising an incred ible $124,811 at our 16th Annual Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon. $90,000 of these funds will benefit local parents and their babies, providing important upgrades to our Labour & Delivery unit. The additional $34,811 will help purchase urgently needed medical equipment serving patients across ourNewhospital.lifeis a beautiful thing. Looking back on this year’s event, I’m so appreciative of the positivity generated by our work together. Speaking with local families about the com passion and exceptional care they received from our Labour & Delivery unit was inspiring. Seeing so many community members post photos and memories of the babies they proudly welcomed at our hospital – and the children they’ve become – was moving, dem onstrating the impact CCH’s team has had on soAlongmany.the way, we helped educate parents considering having their children at CCH, and our team learned some new things, too. Aside from our fantastic OBGYNs (Dr. DeHinbo, Dr. Nadkarni, Dr. Pierre) and nurses on the unit, we were thrilled to hear how much local midwives enjoy working at our hospital. If you’re interested in finding out more about the relationship between our clin ical team and local midwives, you can find a video featuring the wonderful professionals from Gentle Beginnings Midwifery on our @ CornwallHospitalFoundation Facebook Page. No longer a small community hospital, CCH’s services have grown in leaps and bounds over the last decade. We were inter ested to learn that our hospital is the only one in our region outside of Ottawa offering 24-hour Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) onsite. These professionals help babies experiencing challenges as they tran sition from the womb to the outside world. Our work together will bring a new birthing bed, new breastfeeding space, and three new vital signs monitors to the unit. Last year, approximately 550 babies were welcomed into the world at CCH, and these upgrades will help more patients experience exception al care.Weare appreciative not only to everyone who donated to this cause, but also to the wonderful local businesses who sponsored our event, and the community organizations and volunteers who contributed their time, effort, and fundraising. Finally, with full hearts, we recognize our outstanding part ners at BOOM 101.9 and 104.5 Fresh FM. Thanks to our Corus family, our Radiothon continues to help us keep our community healthy.

The 31st annual Apples & Art Studio Tour

NewsSeaway -

John Ronald Reuel (J.R.R.) Tolkien was a young man as he read an old Saxon poem “The Crist of Cynewulf” when a phrase leapt off the page. “Hail Earendel bright est of angels, over Middle Earth sent to men.” Middle Earth is an ancient expression for our world which lies between Heaven and Hell. For years Ronald had been studying languages, inventing his own and making up stories set in a mythical past. Eventually he combined all this material into a setting called Middle Earth. Authors create their work according to their ‘view of the world.’ Ronald’s was a Christian view and his books show it. Christianity appears in the ideas and symbols of his famous trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Ronald said, “The four gospels (in the Bible) contain stories which bring a surprising, hopeful turn in all man’s despair and sorrow. Joy is the result, a brief glimpse of intense delight springing out of unexpected goodWhennews.”Ronald’s good creatures think about good and evil, predestination, history, freewill and grace, mercy, judgment and redemption, they follow their maker’s Christian mind. For instance, when an elf says, “But whereas the light perceives the very heart of darkness, its own secret has not been discovered,” he echoes the Apostle John who said, “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” (JohnRonald,1:5). who lived through both world wars and spent time in the trenches, knew first-hand about light and darkness. He had also lost both parents at a young age. Others carefully managed his upbringing until he would eventually marry Edith Bratt when he turned 21 and just before he went to war. Edith would eventually become his inspiration for several characters.

KRYSTINE THERRIAULT

1. Retirement. Some older people dedicate a significant portion of their lives to their work and view retirement as a series of losses. They may not know how to use or value their free time. Alcohol can become a way to compensate for losing their professional life.

According to the LowRisk Drinking Guidelines published by the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health, women over 65 are advised to consume no more than one standard alcoholic drink per day and five per week. For men, the recommendations state no more than one to two per day and no more than seven per week.

It’s important to know that age-specific issues may contribute to an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, leading to mental and physical problems. Whether you drink alcohol regularly or occasionally, your health demands that you examine your habits. Risk factors Certain events later in life can trigger excessive alcohol consumption, such as:

2. Loneliness. Older people who no longer have children in their care, have lost their life partner or don’t have a large social circle are at increased risk of drinking alone and becoming alcohol dependent.

Richard Salem, Executive Director for Your Arts Council, Cornwall & the Counties and Coordinator for the event, says: “We’re really stoked for this year’s event! There’s a good mix of returning and new artists and locations, cov ering a variety of disciplines from sculpture to textiles, as well as our always amazing paint ers and illustrators. Our new website showcas es their talents as beautifully as we could have hoped.”Thearrival of fall is one of the most colourful events of the year in our area. The season dresses in its most vibrant hues while local artists open their creative space to visitors. The goal of the Apples & Art Studio Tour is to give the residents of and visitors to Cornwall and area an opportunity to enjoy art in the spaces where it is actually created. It is a chance to meet the artists, to chat, to see their work in a natural setting and enjoy the wellness of visual beauty and friendly com pany. You will discover all types of artists who work with paint, ink, clay, fine stones, wood and glass to create original pieces of art. The tour is organized by a group of volun teers working with Your Arts Council, Cornwall & the Counties. The brochure showcasing the locations for 2022 is now available. Our web site and Face-book page further explain the possibilities of this annual event. Have loved ones or medical professionals expressed concerns about your drinking?

The 31st annual Apples & Art Studio Tour is coming to the region September 24th & 25th from 10 am to 4 pm. We have an incredible line up of more than 80 local artists exhibiting at 44 locations from Morrisburg to Alexandria, plus three Eastern Ontario Agri-Food Network sites are also partici-pating!

As is well known, Ronald became a close friend of C. S. Lewis. His wisdom pointed Lewis back to Christi anity. The two were founding members of one of his tory’s most famous literary groups: the Inklings. Lewis’s work (Narnia), would eventually be even more overtly Christian.Lastweek saw the anniversary of Tolkien’s death; September 2, 1973. The Lord of the Rings has spawned hundreds of imitations which unfortunately do not share its Christian world view. But remember the value of allegory and drama in presenting the timeless truths of the Gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ; Redeemer, Rescuer and our returning Ruler! Pastor Jim

About 31 years ago, Karen Cooper, then involved on The Seaway Arts Council with a keen interest in Graphic Arts, was having a discussion with transplanted NYC photograph er Linda Gumbs about the richness of Artistic Talent in the community and the question was asked, “Why doesn’t Corn-wall and The Counties have an Art Tour”?. Well the answer was simple. No one had made the time to organize one. So with the support of the Seaway Arts Council, Karen and Linda joined forces with Regional Artists Martin Crevier and Janet Keefe to organize the first Artist Sponsored Apple and Arts Studio Tour.

The premise was simple. Artists would open up their studio space to the community and visitors, encouraging them to find out more about the arts through discussion about the work, their pro-cesses and through various hands on demonstrations that would take place during the tour. The tour has always taken place during the last full week-end in September, harvest time for many apple varieties. The timing of the tour also celebrates the various local apple grow ers and the cel-ebration in particular of the McIntosh Apple which was conceived right here in Eastern Ontario. The tour often includes studios and area businesses that feature special apple offerings in celebra-tion of the tour. The Tour has had several community organ izations and artists who have organized the Tour each year. “It is wonderful to see how the Tour has grown and been transformed over the years” said Cooper.

The added stress of figuring out transportation to and from radiation, Monday to Friday, for up to six weeks can be overwhelming. Some patients are in no shape to drive after their cancer treatments. Others may not have a vehicle or friends and family who are available to drive them, especially if they work full-time. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope program aims to reduce this stress by matching patients with volunteers who are willing to drive them to and from their appoint ments at the Ottawa Hospital on Smyth Road. The Wheels of Hope program is in desperate need of at least 10 volunteers to meet the demand for rides in Cornwall and SD&G. The hospital often asks about their availability, but they have had to turn patients away due to lack of Forvolunteers.thosewho can access the program, the feedback is always positive. Comments like, “I don’t know what I would have done without this program,” and “The volunteers make me smile and take so much stress off my shoulders” are common for organizers to hear.

The same can be said of the generous volun teers who keep the program running. Volunteers are offered a mileage reimburse ment of .35 cents/km. Some volunteers choose to donate this money and request a tax receipt to give back to the program even more. Volunteers are required to have a valid driv er’s license with 3 or less demerits and operate a 100% smoke free, clean, and well-maintained vehicle. They must also be willing to undergo a criminal background check and are at least double vaccinated. Both the volunteer and the client are required to wear a mask in the vehicle.

CORNWALL, ON - An important part of the City’s history will come alive September 17th when the former Cornwall Classical College is honoured with the unveiling of a memorial site as part of the city’s Historical Walk. The plaque unveiling ceremonies near the entrance to St. Lawrence College at the cor ner of Montreal Rd. will reveal two historical plaques, designed in tandem with the City, that are similar to over 40 other historical plaques in the Cornwall area. Those familiar with the College’s history will remember its outstanding contributions to the educational, cultural, spiritual and sports life of the City. The College’s history dates to 1949, when the Clerics of Saint Viator, a religious order founded in France in 1831, opened the first French Catholic secondary school at 24 Lawrence St. Soon, the growing number of students throughout the city and the province enabled the Clerics to build Cornwall Classical College on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The site they chose was the tip of Windmill Point, which at the time was an island. In 1955, the College officially opened its doors and in the years that followed, the student population grew to 350, including a number of female students in the College’s later years. In addition to offering an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, the College’s cur riculum consisted of a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, in partnership with the University of Ottawa.Oncampus, the College fulfilled its mission of promoting the spiritual, cultural, social and political life of its students. The Clerics thus triggered a strong and lasting impact on the City, fulfilling the cultural and artistic needs of its citizens and transforming Cornwall in many regards.AtCollege, there was always something to do.. College plays, the theatre, men’s choir, sports, the Winter Carnival and local activities such as parades, contests and French Week. The College also produced some outstanding athletes. In 1964, its football team, the Classics, won the Quebec Intercollegiate Football championship, making headlines across Quebec and Ontario. Following their years of study at college and university, the majority of students pursued careers in various fields including business, law, engineering, executive management and education.Following a revamping of financing in the Ontario school system, the College was forced to close its doors. In September, 1968, the existing St. Lawrence College, cre ated under the new Colleges Program of Applied Arts and Technology, took possession of the land and buildings formerly owned by Cornwall Classical College. On Saturday the 17th, a brief plaque unveil ing ceremony will be held at 10:30 to com memorate the College’s legacy. You’re quite welcome, if you’d like to attend.

REPORTER: Krystine Therriault ktherriault@seawaynews.media

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM So...as of Aug. 24, 2022 the City of Cornwall has ‘no current plans’ to relocate the Legion Park baseball fields. We were advised of this when a state ment was issued by city hall, seemingly out of nowhere, on that date. We were left scratching our heads as to why this state ment was issued in the first place. Presumably someone, or some people, have concerns about future plans for the baseballNothingfields.sounds more guilty than a per son (or agency) that hasn’t been accused of anything, out of nowhere protesting inno cence. No future plans for the Legion Park ball diamonds have been voiced publicly to us – so maybe the city is trying to get out in front of an issue that so far remains a secret?According to the City’s Waterfront Master Plan — which outlines a vision for the future of the waterfront — the transition of the ball fields into park space has been identified as a potential LONG-TERM consideration.Ifthecitywere to invest more time and energy into such a course of action, discus sions with affected user groups as well as the general public would have to take place. Since the adoption of the City’s Waterfront Master Plan in August of 2019, there has been no discussions or studies completed into the matter. Cornwall’s waterfront is a source of both local pride, and paranoia. We have the potential for a waterfront that is the envy of other communities located on the St. Lawrence River. We have large public spaces that anyone can enjoy, including Lamoureux Park, Point Maligne and the waterfront trail. We are missing a few things, though. If one wants to enjoy a night out with dinner and drinks on the waterfront, there is nowhere in Cornwall to enjoy such a thing. You have to leave the city and head east or west to sit on a private waterfront patio. The local paranoia we referenced earlier starts to rear its ugly head when anyone (gasp!) even mentions the idea of creating private space on our waterfront for busi nesses to provide services we can enjoy ON TOP OF the amazing green space we currently have. A few years ago, private interests tried to monetize some of the space in and around the ball diamonds and Marina 200. Condos were to be built. Any losses in green space would have been supplemented by new pri vately-funded washroom facilities for the ball diamonds, recreation path improve ments as well as local economic spinoffs by way of deep-pocketed condo owners who wanted to enjoy riverfront living near MarinaInstead,200.local zealots got bent out of shape and before the ink was even dry on headlines the project got shelved.

We’re told that the Cornwall Portlands (harbour) are our next best opportunity for seeing growth on the waterfront. There’s also the possibility that the former Domtar lands could one day become home of future development on our waterfront. Two things to consider on that front –time and money. If you’re waiting around for development in those two areas, get ready for a loooooooooooong wait. More than 15 years after the mill produced its last sheet of paper, the smokestacks are still stand ing at the former Domtar site. It’ll probably take another 100 years before anything further happens on that property. If you need an example of what we’re talking about look at how long the Cotton Mills sat around. There’s still work taking place TODAY to improve that part of our city, and that facility stopped being a cotton mill when our great grandparents were still alive.Same thing goes for the Port Lands. The city and Akwesasne are both jointly admin istering the former harbour site. When was the last time you saw two government oper ations move quickly on anything?

It’ll also take a small fortune to see any meaningful development in either of these twoAlllocations.ofthismakes us wonder – are we stuck with the waterfront we’ve got forever?

THE END OF SUMMER… – …and the beginning of another school year. ‘TLWD’ (Keesha, ‘The Little White Dog’) will miss the company of the children. Come the end of the day, she ambles back to the end of the driveway to await their return. (Watercolour by Juliet Gill)

Pity the child whose absolutely rigid mom says, “Everything you had last year is what you’re going back to school with this year!” Picture the poor kid who has to endure the ridicule from his grade two or grade XII classmates, or even his third-year university course in mediaeval music. Every September, for up to fifteen years (8 + 4 +3 = 15) he’d hear the taunts. “Look at what that poor kid is still using!” Suppose Mom has finally given in and decided to bring Junior’s school kit out of the late Twentieth Century. Dragging her feet, with August’s box store back to school flyer in hand, the specials on 3-ring binders, pen cil cases, rulers and bookbags have been circled. Excited Junior can’t hold back his glee of Alas, anticipation.disappointment awaits them. Since this DWW’s publication date is September 7, it’s already too late to get any school sup plies. This is the time of year when each child going back to school somehow needs a com pletely new and different set of school sup plies. There’s the compass (no, not the wil derness travel one), the one most often used to poke holes rather than explore the intricacies of Euclidian geometry. Then there’s the slide rule. I didn’t go far in trigonometry. I barely got beyond using it as a straight edge to surreptitiously draw ships and airplanes at the back of the classroom.I’msure there are some parents who refuse to bend to the tradition of what some children going back to school plead, such as, “This year I gotta have a new 3-ring binder, a new pencil case, a new ruler and a new bookbag!”

KRYSTINE THERRIAULT ktherriault@seawaynews.mediaIt’sbeenabusyyearfor the Agape Centre as operations start to return to normal after the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Of course, by normal I mean the ‘new normal’. In the aftermath of the pandemic, more and more people in our community are accessing Agape’s services.

In the month of March 2020, leading into the pandemic, the food bank served 1,067 clients. In July 2022, they served 2,012 –almost double the amount they were serving two years prior. One growing trend that’s being noticed is that more working families are accessing Agape’s services. It can be hard to make ends meet when rent is $1,500-$2,000 a month, you have kids to clothe and feed and you need to maintain a vehicle to get to and from work. People are scared to get evicted, so they make sure their rent and utilities are paid, but this leaves little to no money at the end of the month for food.

“We need funding,” she adds, “If we didn’t have local grocery stores and Walmart that support us, our shelves would not be stocked.”Inthe meantime, the Agape Centre is involved in several important partnerships. These partner-ships help bring in the money needed to keep the food insecure in our community from going hungry. They also bring important resources to those that need them the most.

Updates and What’s Coming: The dining room at the Agape Centre reopened in May. Lunch is served between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm but people are wel come to drop-in and hang out any time between 10 am and 3 pm. After scaling back their hours during the pandemic, the New for You thrift store is once again open on Saturdays from 9:30 to 3:30.The Agape Centre now has a community fridge! This fridge is kept stocked after hours with items like canned goods, fruits and vegetables, and granola bars, for people who need food when the Centre is closed. The fridge was generously donated by the Kinsmen Club. A gentleman from Alex-andria built the shelter that keeps it covered using supplies donated by BMR. Moving forward, the Agape Centre plans to host community suppers once a month with the help of local service clubs. They’re also hoping to book regular guest speakers to update their clientele on services that are available in our community. Another thing clients of the Agape Centre can soon expect are more options for differ ent dietary needs. This includes options that are culturally diverse, such as halal, different types of flower and varie-ties of rice. The Agape Centre also plans to stock their shelves with options for individuals with dia-betes, lac tose, or gluten intolerance, etc.

Community Impact

• A partnership with Diabetes Canada allows the Agape Center to benefit from donated items that don’t make it to the thrift store, like clothes with holes or missing but tons. In this pro-gram, fabric items are bagged up, weighed, and paid for by the pound. In turn, Diabetes Canada sells these fabrics to companies that downcycle them into items like rags and insu-lation.

CORNWALL, ON – Member of Parliament Eric Duncan (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry) is pleased to announce the cre ation of a new program to celebrate local community leaders in honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years of selfless service to Canada and the Commonwealth. While the current government did not cre ate a similar program to Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee medals in 2012, many Members of Parliament have opted to cre ate programs in their communities to recog nize the hard work and achievements of deserving Canadians. “Over the last two years, our community has faced significant challenges and hard ships. Yet, in spite of these challenges, countless local residents came together to support their neighbours, friends and local organizations, all united by one common purpose: to make a difference,” said MP Duncan. “This program is a great way we can say thank you and recognize the many wonderful people for their contributions to ourDuncan’scommunity.”office is asking residents to submit nominations of deserving Canadians in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry who have made significant efforts to improve our community or our country. Nominations for this award are open to educators, art ists, athletes, scientists, coaches, entre preneurs, emergency responders, commun ity volunteers, activity organizers, and other everyday Canadians striving to make their communities a better place. Chosen recipients will be awarded a unique Queen’s Platinum Jubilee medallion and will be officially recognized at an award ceremony this fall.

The proceeds from Furniture Partners are split 50-50 between the Agape Centre and Habi-tat for Humanity. They also split expens es equally and each organization has a fulltime staff member and a volunteer working at the store. The store opened in March 2022 and is 6 months into a 1-year trial at the current location.

September is Hunger Action Month: Become a Hunger Champion! From the 19th to the 23rd the Agape Centre will be hosting their Hunger Awareness Challenge. During this challenge, ‘Hunger Champions’ collect pledges for the Agape Centre and only eat items chosen from the food bank. There is a daily question posted on the Agape Center Facebook page to answer as part of the challenge. “I’ve done it a couple times, and I’m going to do it again this year. It certainly gives you a close-up view of what its like to only sur vive on what you get from the food bank,” says Duprau, “If you’re living on a fixed income with no extra money after paying for rent and utilities, you have no other option than to get your food at the food bank. That’s reality for a lot of people in our community.”Ifyouwould like to participate, contact Lisa Duprau at 613-938-9297 ext. 127 or email lduprau@agapecentre.ca.

• Furniture Partners, located at 327 Montreal Road, is a partnership between the Agape Cen-tre and Habitat for Humanity. The store carries used furniture that’s not in good enough shape to be sold at ReStore or New for You, but still has a lot of life left to it. The furniture is reasonably priced with a range of items from antique pieces to inexpensive options that are great for stu dents or young families on a budget.

It’s not any easier for single individuals on fixed incomes. A single person on ODSP makes $1,169 per month. A single person on Ontario Works, only $733 per month. These people can hardly afford the current prices of rent let alone anything else. What does this mean for the Agape Center? Right now, they’re processing approximately 30-40 new referrals every month... that’s up to 100 new people to feed each“Wemonth!receive no funding; we raise all our own money,” explains Lisa Duprau, Agape Centre’s execu-tive director, “We have a fabu lous community that supports us consistent ly, year-round, but I think our governments need to be aware of what’s going on and step up.”

• Another cool partnership is with the Recovery Care Unit, which parks at the Agape Centre on Fridays. They offer free ser vices like basic nursing care, wound care, diabetic supplies, and some addiction services.•Forthe second year in a row, a $3,500 grant from Intact Insurance will help keep feed stu-dents through a school program. The money from this program helps add school snacks, juice, etc. to the food ham pers of clients with school aged children.

• On Saturday, August 20, 2022, the Agape Centre hosted their first free bike repair clinic in partnership with Kanata Baptist Church. The program, run by teens and young adults, is called Chain Reaction and has been running since 2005. This group bikes though Eastern Ontario and stops in different locations to do bike clinics, all while all carrying their tools with them. Anyone in the community was welcome to attend, and a total of approximately 34 bikes were fixed. The group even did an e-scooter tune up!

Duncan Launches Nominations for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Nomination details are available online at Submissionswww.EricDuncanMP.ca/nominate.willbeaccepteduntil Friday, September 9th, 2022.

• This summer, the Agape Centre part nered with students from La Citadelle to build a com-munity garden that is open to anyone in the community. Students built gar den boxes with lumber supplied by the Centre. A grant from Commonwealth Insurance helped pay for more garden boxes and a nice sign for the garden.

Ryan MacKay launches a “Fresh Perspective for Cornwall”

I am excited to officially launch my cam paign to represent the City of Cornwall on the Upper Canada District School Board as trust ee. My campaign is focused on the promise and commitment to bring a Fresh Perspective to the Board and all matters pertaining to education locally. My livelihood, and that of my entire family, is rooted in our education system. For the past 19 years I have been employed at Carleton University in Ottawa, currently serv ing as the Departmental Administrator for the Department of Neuroscience. I have wit nessed many changes over the years and have a unique perspective on what our stu dents need to be successful in their post-sec ondary pathways, wherever that might lead them.Mywife of eight years is a Registered Early Childhood Educator at Rockland Public School. Seeing her work and dedication has given me a deeper appreciation and respect for the work all educators do to support our kids and foster a positive environment for growth. My daughter attends Eamer’s Corners Public School. I have experienced her learn ing firsthand, and like all families, have had to navigate and adapt to the challenges of online learning these past two years. This fall, my son will enter junior kindergarten. As he enters his first year of school, I am hopeful for a return to normalcy in routine and the tiple municipal, provincial and federal cam paigns. My work ethic and commitment to be of service to constituents comes from the example I witnessed as a staffer to former Member of Provincial Parliament, John Cleary. Most recently, for the past two years I have served as the secretary to the executive board of Bereaved Families of Ontario – South Eastern Region. This passion for politics, the drive to volunteer, and duty to be of service has led me to this candidacy. Education is deeply rooted in our daily lives. I see the system from multiple perspec tives. I am ready to take this real-world know ledge and turn it into practical decision mak ing. On October 24th, I am asking the residents of Cornwall to make a change and give local education a Fresh Perspective.

CFUW Cornwall & District Doubly Honoured!

The Cornwall & District branch of Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) had an exceptional year in 2021-2022.Thislocalclub of around 50 friendly, inter esting, and engaging women met monthly via Zoom, and eventually in-person, to dis cuss current events and issues, gardening matters, local charity initiatives, and loads of other topics. When we were finally able to meet in-per son, our meetings included delicious meals asIfwell.you’d like more information about our upcoming club activities this Fall, please contact us at com to receive the latest electronic copy of our newsletter, The Dispatch. An additional bonus last year was that we won two of the three prizes offered by CFUW Ontario Council to the 49 provincial mem berTheclubs.Carolyn Day Award for Environmental Action was awarded to our club for a year-long program that had us avoiding the use of sin gle use plastics, wrap ping our Christmas gifts without any waste, turn ing down our thermo stats, picking up litter in Lamoureux Park and re-purposing our pump kins, among other things. We also won the Award for Club Member Retention for the sup port that our members provided for one another during the pandemic, including social media sharing, “sister” phone calls, and recognition of special moments in our members’ lives. Now the end of summer has arrived, and we can look forward to another exciting CFUW year in 2022-2023.Thisyearwe hope that most of our club meet ings will be in-person, since we love to see one another.Wealso enjoy sharing a meal and sometimes a glass of wine together. Our upcoming monthly program includes a pres entation by Cornwall’s Dr. Rachel Navaneelan in September; Evelyne Smit, one of our mem bers, will discuss her personal insights into Higher Education for the Blind during our October meeting; and our very popular Holiday Auction Finale will take place in November.InDecember we will meet for our annual Christmas dinner. In 2023 we have more treats in store, but I’ll leave that for another day.In addition to our whole club meetings, we have smaller groups that get together for Book Club, Outdoors Club, and Gourmet Club. Our Scholarship Committee organizes 12 Scholarships of $800.00 each that are awarded to local graduates who will be starting post-secondary studies this year. Our Advocacy group steers us as we con tribute to some of our community organiza tions such as Baldwin House and the Cornwall Children’s Treatment Center. If CFUW Cornwall & District sounds inter esting to you, we would love to have you as a new member. Why not attend a couple of meetings as a guest, and bring a friend? We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month, usually at 6 pm. We hope to see you soon.

What a treat…Friday afternoon staff at CGH were treated to free ice cream courtesy of our Wellness Committee! Several managers and our Chief Human Resources Officer were on-hand to help serve our hard-working staff their delicious frozen treat heading into the long weekend. As they approached Labour Day, an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers, CCH would like to recognize the hard working and dedicated staff and physicians at CCH who go above and beyond to care for our patients, help keep our hospital in working order, and provide exceptional care to the community. Thank you for all you do!
