Sparky’s Toy Drive delivers joy

Flag raised for Children’s Christmas Fund

Christmas Fund. It was the newly elected mayor’s first flag raising.

“The Children’s Christmas Fund is organized through the Cornwall Service Club Council and the work that they do is important. There is a lot of people in need, especially this year, and we need to help them out the best we can,” said Mayor Towndale. Donations can be made at Scotiabank on Brookdale Avenue or online through CanadaHelps.org.

The vibes were high at Benson Certified Auto Service on Pitt Street last Friday when Sparky and his crew dropped in on one of their many stops to local businesses to pick up donations for the annual Sparky’s Toy Drive, organized with the help of the Optimist Club of Cornwall.

Sparky and members of the Cornwall Fire Service came in bringing with them music and dancing, something that manager Pauline Deneault-Bray said they missed during the last few years of the pandemic. Also in attendance were Mayor Justin Towndale and

city councilor Maurice Dupelle.

“The toy drive is an important seasonal event. It really helps the community and its always a success because of the volunteers who are behind it and those who participate by donating. There is a need in our community. We need to recognize that and do what we can and help those who are in need,” said Towndale.

“Sparky does such a great job. It’s so neat and then all these businesses that come together to make the day like this happen is just amazing. There’s such a need for it in our community that its great to see everyone is doing their part,” added Dupelle.

FIRE AND RESCUE HOLIDAY SAFETY

Cooking, Smoking and Alcohol… A Dangerous Mix

The holidays can be one of the most dangerous times of the year for home fires. All too often, these fires are started by careless cooking or smoking. In many cases alcohol is involved. Here are some holiday tips to keep you and your family safe:

1. Stay in the kitchen when cooking.

2. Drink responsibly.

3. If you smoke, smoke outside.

4. Install and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and practice your home fire escape plan with all guests and family members.

On behalf of the Fire Chief and all members of South Stormont Fire and Rescue, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

WINTER MAINTENANCE INFORMATION

Your assistance during the winter season will help the Township of South Stormont Public Works Department provide efficient and effective winter maintenance. Your cooperation with snow removal is very much appreciated.

• Trucks with flashing blue lights are performing winter maintenance. Please give them room to work and pass with caution as visibility may be compromised with blowing snow.

• Park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone.

Current policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post, or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow. Avoid installing mailboxes where they can be damaged by plowing.

Basketball/hockey nets and skateboard ramps should be placed on private property to avoid any potential damage by our winter operations. Township staff will remove any hockey/basketball nets and skateboard ramps remaining on the Township Road Right of Way.

Winter Parking Restriction in Effect

The snow will arrive soon! Please remember that no person shall park a vehicle or permit a vehicle to remain parked on any highway so as to interfere with the clearing of snow or ice from the highway at any time; or between the hours of 12:00 a.m. of one day and 7:00 a.m. of the same day between November 1st and April 1st. Enforcement Action will be taken if vehicles interfere with snow removal.

Winter Maintained Sidewalks

The Township of South Stormont would like to remind residents that only the sidewalks identified in By-law No. 2020-011 are maintained throughout the winter. All other sidewalks are considered closed from November 1st – April 1st. To view the list of sidewalks that are maintained, please visit southstormont.ca/WinterMaintenance or contact the Township Office at 613-534-8889 or info@southstormont.ca

Please ensure that vehicles, garbage and recycling bins are not obstructing the plow operator’s ability to effectively clear the sidewalks.

New Pommier carriage an early holiday gift

Pommier Jewellers presents Upper Canada Village with a Third Horse-Drawn Carriage

Morrisburg, ON, December 16, 2022 — Earlier this week, Andre and France Pommier of Pommier Jewellers, presented a special gift of a new horse-drawn carriage to Upper Canada Village. The donation comes just in time for the new carriage to join the fleet of two other horsedrawn carriages, all donated by Pommier Jewellers, operating popular rides at Alight at Night, currently running until January 7 at Upper Canada Village.

A long-time supporter of events like Alight at Night and Pumpkinferno, Pommier Jewellers is celebrating its 85th anniversary in business in Cornwall this year. Mr. Pommier felt donating

another carriage would be a fitting way to commemorate this anniversary.

The carriage hails from Robert’s Carriages, a Canadian company that is one of the largest horse-drawn carriage manufacturers in the world, this horse-drawn carriage features a retractable roof and can seat up to 4 guests comfortably in the enclosed buggy behind the driver.

Tracey Ogilby, Manager of Upper Canada Village, and Julian Whittam, Coordinator of Interpretation, joined Brent Christie, Historic Agriculture and Livestock Specialist at the historic Village to receive the generous gift from the

Tis the Season to visit your elders

Visiting elderly relatives and friends during the holiday season is a great way to make them feel loved and is especially welcome if they happen to live alone. But if you don’t see them often, you may want to take note of their health and overall condition. Here are five things to look out for when you visit seniors for the holidays.

1. WEIGHT LOSS A number of conditions can cause seniors to lose their appetite, and some of them find cooking for one difficult. When visiting, take the time to look around the kitchen to find out whether the refrigerator and cupboards are stocked with fresh food. If not, ask if they need help getting groceries or cooking. Keep in mind that weight loss can also signal a serious health issue.

2. MEMORY LOSS Forgetfulness itself isn’t a concern. However, signs of serious memory loss such as placing items in unusual places, repeating the same thing over and over, mixing up words, and getting lost in familiar areas may warrant a trip to the doctor.

3. MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Depression among seniors is on the rise and those who are socially isolated are at an increased risk. Worrisome signs include withdrawal from social activities, insomnia (or oversleeping), loss of interest in hobbies, loss of

appetite and changes in personality and mood.

4. MOBILITY ISSUES A senior’s level of mobility can change drastically in a short period of time. Such a change can sometimes present a danger. It’s therefore a good idea to ensure that the seniors you visit during the holidays have homes that match their current level of mobility. Uncompleted household chores may indicate an issue.

5. SOCIAL ISOLATION Helping seniors combat social isolation is important, as doing so has been shown to reduce the likelihood of them experiencing depression and other mental health issues. What’s more, by remaining socially active seniors can prevent or mitigate cognitive impairments. If the senior you’re visiting is isolated, help them come up with a plan to make new friends in the new year.

While holiday visits are welcome, it’s just as important to visit the seniors you care about throughout the year. Regular visits will keep you abreast of their health and overall condition and help stave off social isolation to boot.

Picking the right contractor and saving money

Tom Rand Around the Home

For many of us, hiring a contractor isn’t a regular activity. It’s not something we think about until we find ourselves in a position where we need a new roof, or there’s a problem with our home’s plumbing or mechanical systems. Then it’s all we think about until that issue is fixed! So how do we get it right the first time and choose the right contractor? Here are a few thoughts on the selection process:

Availability. If you have an emergency, getting someone there quickly can be critical. This can narrow options too if the emergency happens outside regular business hours. Having a contractor that is available on evenings and weekends should help you rest easier should you need them.

Reputation. Ask a friend you trust. Referrals are always a great source of recommendation. You can also check for indicators like Google reviews, accreditation with the Better Business Bureau and membership in the local Chamber of Commerce.

Skills. Don’t be shy to ask your firm about

what certifications they carry. Having licensed professionals take care of you is a helpful insurance policy against getting the job done safely, and properly. In many cases, it’s also the law.

Customer orientation. You should feel comfortable talking with your contractor! Whether that’s the way you interact with them by phone, e-mail, text, or in-person, make sure you get a good vibe from the firm you’re inquiring with that they care about customer experience. After all, you’re trusting them to come into your home.

Pricing. For some, the lowest price will be the first choice – and that’s okay! But if you do value the attributes mentioned above, it’s reasonable to expect the contractor that fits that bill won’t be the lowest priced in their category.

On that note, if you are considering or needing new Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment or even windows, please be sure to inquire about Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Greener Homes Grant with your contractor. The grant amounts are increasing as of Jan 1 and you can take advantage now, saving up to $7,100 in the example of a heat pump. It’s a great time to improve your home comfort while taking advantage of some very lucrative rebates from the government.

Agapè Centre hosts 3rd annual

Event

On December 15, 2022, the Agapè Centre hosted their 3rd annual Stuff the Stocking event. The event was first launched in 2020 as a drive through event to bring cheer over the holidays when so many were feeling the isolation of the pandemic.

This year, children and their families were invited to walk through the Agapè Centre’s community kitchen where employees and volunteers set up a Christmas-themed room and were handing out refreshments, DQ Coupons, stockings, and toys to children in the community.

“The Agape Centre is thrilled with the turnout for our 3rd annual Stuff the Stocking event for families using our services,” said Lisa Duprau, Executive Director of the Agape Centre, “161 children visited the Centre to share in some holiday spirit and enjoy a visit with Santa. While there are often a multitude of challenges that face a community over the course of 12 months – issues that we detail regularly in this space – we’d like to take some time to focus on the positive evolutions Cornwall and area are experiencing.

During the recent 2022 Year in Review –hosted by the City of Cornwall’s economic development department, a series of noteworthy accomplishments have been undertaken right here in our home.

According to presenters last week, the number of commercial businesses that opened or expanded operations in Cornwall this year is very high. The city once again welcomed a number of new restaurants, retail cannabis stores and retailers. Of particular note is the number of entrepreneurs that are new to Cornwall and in many cases new to Canada. Many of these small

businesses have been supported by organizations including the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre, Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, ACCFutures as well as the economic development departments at the city, the United Counties of Stormont Dundas and Glengarry and its local municipalities.

Several local manufacturers, food processors and logistics companies expanded operations in 2022. This includes the region’s largest private sector employer, Walmart Canada, along with other major employers, including SigmaPoint, Leclerc, Olymel, Hood Packaging, and Laframboise Group.

Local developers continue to build new homes across the city in a number of subdivisions. Multi-unit residential projects are slated to deliver another 200 units, with more on the way. New long-term care facilities are nearing completion with another project currently in the design stages. Devcore continues to renovate hundreds of rental units, and with its recent acquisition of the DEV Centre, is planning on building a mix of

WITH WORDS

Ever since August 1994 until now, I’ve used these self-imposed guidelines when choosing topics for my columns: “Write about anything – except The Big Three: Sex, Politics, Religion.” Today, with each stroke of the keyboard, I feel as if I’m walking through a mine field. With apprehension and caution, here I go.

While my wife was doing the weekly grocery shopping, I was parked outside a large Cornwall shopping area observing the busy comings and goings. Among them was a man holding a large, well-printed, grammatically correct sign. If he had made his large sign on his own, its grammar was correct, its printing and layout was worthy of graphics shop. I went closer to listen in on his interactions with passers-by.

An irate man confronted him with, “Why aren’t you working? There’s all sorts of jobs

out there. I’m tired of you immigrant parasites getting government handouts. Why aren’t you out applying for a job, rather then standing here behind your sign?”

“I try to get jobs. No speak good enough for working.”

Just then a woman who had been listening in interrupted, “Leave him alone. It’s his children who will be supporting us and caring for us in our old age.” With that, she brought out a crisp piece of paper currency, handed it to him and stormed away.

It was my turn to interact with him. “Hi! I’m Nick. What’s your name?”

“My name Yubi Foot.” He was obviously aware of my puzzlement and was not surprized when I followed up with “How do you spell that?”

Immediate response: “It is y-u-b-i…f-o-o-t, Yubi Foot.” Hmm, I said to my self. It doesn’t sound much like Wolochatiuk, Wasylenki, Kurelek or Humeniuk…, names in my Ukrainian heritage.

I then asked, “What city in Ukraine did you live?” After pausing to search through his geography data base, he came up with

high and low density units along the waterfront.

St. Lawrence College launched new micro-credential programs, the Cornwall Community Hospital added a new acute stroke unit and the City of Cornwall invested in new roads, facilities and infrastructure projects. OPG continues to make significant investments at the Saunders Generating Station, the Seaway International Bridge completed a major renovation of the South Channel Bridge and Cornwall Electric is expanding its network.

This information is available at the city’s

online marketing vehicle, choosecornwall.ca. Choose Cornwall is an amazing brand that tells the stories of business and commercial successes in our city and area.

The annual Year in Review reports was delivered to an audience of 300 business and community leaders at Galaxy Cinemas. 2022 was the 25th time that Cornwall economic development has delivered an annual recap of business news. Information for the report is gathered from diverse sources including building permits, local media and submissions from local businesses and organizations.

“Bucharest.” That prompted me to think about my travels. I haven’t been to Ukraine, but I have been to Bucharest. I remember it as being in Romania. Seeing that my line of questioning was going nowhere, I came up with this offer. “I’m building a stone wall and I need help to shovel two trailer loads of topsoil as back fill. I’ll pay you $250 for two hours of shovelling. I’ll pick you up from home and drive you back after paying you in cash. Interested?”

He was silent, then asked “Today?”

“No, it’s almost dark. Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Here’s my phone number. Call me.”

His only response was “You go away. Leave me alone.”

I did go away. It’s been more than a week and I haven’t heard from him.

What’s your take on this scenario? What would you do? What would you have to say to him? Would you give him any money or offer any other kind of assistance?

If my judgement was wrong, I apologize, and a Merry Christmas to all.

years later Christmas ‘miracle’ not forgotten

It was Christmas Eve back in the day, and a single mother had some heart-breaking news for her six-year-old son. With tears trickling down her cheeks, she told the little guy that unlike other Christmases when she was able to cobble together some spare change for a gift or two, there was no extra money for gifts this Christmas. Santa would not be visiting. The young son wrapped his arms around her and whispered, “Don’t worry. We’ll get by. Everything will be okay.” Paying the rent on the little upstairs apartment at 142 Pitt St., across from the New York Cafe, and putting food on the table was a big enough challenge for the mother who earned 75 cents an hour working long hours as a waitress. The social safety net was not what it is today. As he gazed out on the now empty downtown from the second-storey apartment window, he heard a loud stomping noise of someone climbing the 25 stairs leading to the apartment door. Then someone hollered, “This looks like the place.” There was a loud knock. As the kid slowly opened the door there stood “two of the biggest men I had ever seen.” They were wearing Cornwall Fire Department uniforms. Flashing big smiles they shouted ‘Merry Christmas’ and came through the doorway lugging a huge box covered with wrapping paper and adorned with a huge red bow. The box was filled with toys, food and treats. Everything you can think of, he recalled, was in that huge box.

“That happened 70 years ago but I have never forgotten this act of kindness that brought a sense of belonging and faith to our little family,” Brian “The Cat” Rouleau said the other day from his home in Atlanta. It was a true Christmas miracle. No doubt the two firefighters have passed away, but Rouleau said they live on in his memory. It was all part of the fire department Christmas Sparky’s Toy Drive that continues today.

The Cornwall native who left the city at age 18 to join the U.S. Army and soon after started his first of multiple tours in Vietnam (something he describes as “dangerous work”) has embraced the pay-it-forward concept. Few years back, when a local service club had a breakfast cereal fundraiser for the Agape food bank, “The Cat”, then living in New Orleans, caught wind of it. “Who do I send a cheque to?” he inquired Few days later a cheque for $1,000 arrived. And when a city family was left out in the cold after a fire in their apartment building, he came through with another cheque to help them out. “The Cat” didn’t need a social science degree to understand poverty. He lived it growing up in Cornwall. He jokes about having a pair of worn-out shoes with soles so thin that he could step on a quarter and tell

if it was heads or tails.

Three cheers for the teachers/staff at Bishop Macdonell Catholic School in the city who put on a Christmas luncheon (turkey and all the trimmings with dessert) for the kindergarten-Grade 6 students. Knights of Columbus Council 755 provided the hall and cooked the Christmas feast. Grade 6 kids worked as servers.

Dear Editor:

Just read the article concerning reckless idiots behind the wheel in Cornwall. We definitely have more then our fair share for sure. Increased policing will definitely help. It won’t fix the problem in the short term but if it continues on after the holidays there should be a significant drop in the numbers once word spreads!!! City council might also consider recommending to the school boards that cameras be installed on the swingout stop signs on school buses!! Being a school bus driver myself, I see drivers in too big a rush, totally ignoring the flashing lights. It’s one thing to ignore the new yellow flashers, they’re not required to stop for those. BUT!

Dear Editor, A message from the Martintown Cenotaph Project Team

The Martintown Cenotaph Project Team held their final meeting December 3rd.

The team wishes to thank all who contributed to the construction of the Martintown Cenotaph. The project began in 2019 with an idea. Our first Remembrance Day Service was held November 11th, 2021.

This was accomplished through the contributions of many. Honourable mention goes to Veteran’s Affairs, South Glengarry Township, Lancaster Legion, and Emard’s Lumber.

The red ones?? Come on..do we need to wait till some idiot injures or worse ...kills a kid because they’re running a minute late to get something done?? In one state in the US, the cost of the camera system to the bus com panies was recouped within months!! In they’re case the camera system automatically forwarded a picture of the offending drivers plate and car to the local police and a ticket would be issued. A portion of the paid fine was then redirected to the appropriate school bus company. So it might be a good idea for counsel to recommend such a move to the school boards. Let’s keep EVERYONE safe!

Donations came both from not only Martintown, but from places and associ ations across Canada, who have ties to Martintown, as well as many veterans across Canada. There were many more who contrib uted their time, financial contributions and their building talents without which the con struction of the Cenotaph would not have occurred.

The Martintown Cenotaph Project Team thanks you all for your assistance. You all will be remembered.

Gerry Duguid, Team Leader, Martintown Cenotaph Project Team

Big Brothers Big Sisters awarded $25,000 to launch Wellness Workshop series

Christmas came early for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and District this year, who were awarded a grant of $25,000 to launch a Wellness Workshop Series starting in 2023.

The grant is part of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group’s new L.E.A.F. (Learning Engagement & Accelerator Fund). The company invited community groups across Eastern Ontario to apply for a total of $300,000 in grants that focus on learning and building the skills and capacity of local communities.

“We had a meeting with our Big Sisters and our Big Brothers, and our goal was for them to tell us, ‘What you need from us? What do you think should be a priority for the grant that we want to apply for?’” explained BBBS Executive Director, Pierre-Luc Byham, “They really came forward with ideas.”

“My job as a caseworker is to help support the matches in any way that I can to see them succeed, and having this meeting with the Bigs, it just identified all these things that were missing or needed in the children’s lives,” shared Joel Gibeault, “It’s just so great that we got this grant because now we can do that, we can provide these services to the littles in our community that need it.”

The purpose of The Wellness Workshop Series is to support the children and youth within Cornwall and District who are participating in BBBS mentoring programs and services through a series of workshops dedicated to assisting in cooking/budgeting a meal,

meditation, yoga, cyber safety, and consent.

“I think following COVID-19 everybody’s routine was all over the place for lack of better words. Especially the children, who were working so well in a routine and now they were at home and lots of them felt isolated. We have lots of kids that as a result of that have social anxiety and stress, so this is kind of our way to give them tools to deal with that,” Byham told Seaway News.

Our local BBBS also considered the social priorities set out the Social Development Council, led by councilor Carilyne Hébert, when applying for the grant. One thing that stood out was the emphasis on the food crisis happening in Canada, our community being no exception.

“There are going to be cooking classes to teach the kids how to make the most of a grocery budget while cooking healthy and tasty food,” said Byham, “We’ve partnered up with the Cornwall Police for cyber security workshops and there will be classes talking about consent within a relationship so that kids know what consent and healthy boundaries are all about.”

This program will be launched in 2023 and will last a year. Classes will start around February and will happen on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. The BBBS team is already working to secure funding to keep the program going if it is successful.

“Were just so grateful for Commonwell to have chosen us. Not only were we able to secure this grant but we’re one of the only organizations to do so in our region. We are very happy that kids in Cornwall and SDG will

benefit from this project through Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and District,” said Pierre-Luc.

Of all the projects that were submitted, only ten of them were funded across the province, two of them in Eastern Ontario. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall is one of them.

“We had almost 100 applications and they were all worthy of supporting. Making the selection was difficult, but we feel the 2022 L.E.A.F. grant recipients represent a very impressive range of community causes that will result in a long-term community investment by funding the sharing of knowledge,” said Tim Shauf, President and CEO of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group.

2022 was a successful year for BBBS Cornwall and District, who will have made 18 new matches through the program by year end. Since hiring more staff in the spring their waitlist has gone down significantly. Soon they will be looking for more Littles and hope to make even more matches in 2023.

“We’re so grateful for the way the community has responded,” Byham stated, “You know, when you’re volunteering with our organization it’s not like volunteering for an event where you show up and nine and you’re done at three for example. Its weekly volunteer hours that the Bigs are giving to the kids for at least one year so it’s a long-term volunteer commitment.”

Local therapy dogs featured in calendar

have spent many hours volunteering in the community alongside their owner.

Jane McLaren has volunteered with her therapy dogs since 1991, and just registered her 8th. Recently, a stunning image of her two Shetland Sheepdogs, Hannah and Nessie, was selected from more than 15,500 entries to be featured as January in the Pet Valu 2023 calendar.

To celebrate Hannah and Nessie, Pet Valu Eastcourt Mall (1380 2nd Street) is currently exhibiting a five-foot x three foot display showcasing the winning photo of the Sheepdogs and some fun facts about them.

“It’s just such a beautiful photo of two dogs getting out enjoying the winter weather which is so important as we get into the colder season,” said Alison Preiss, Senior Integrated Marketing Manager at Pet Valu.

The annual calendar, which contains photos of 15 Canadian pets taken by their pet parents, including dogs, cats, a guinea pig, a budgie, and a bearded dragon, will be available in Pet Valu for a give-what-you-can donation in mid-December. One hundred per cent of the donations go towards Pet Valu’s Companions for ChangeTM initiatives.

“This is the 11th annual fundraising calendar, so we’ve been running this program for quite a few years and we’re always so grateful and so pleasantly surprised by the generosity of devoted pet lovers who pick this up, make their donation, and have it in their home for the year,” added Preiss.

Hannah and Nessie are registered therapy dogs and Reading Education Assistance dogs. Now in their senior years, both dogs

“Hannah did four years at Cornwall Hospice. When she first started, she did some time at the hospital as well. She’s done McConnell Manor. They’ve both done the reading program that the library had preCOVID; they’re just getting back into that again. I’ve been all over the place with them because it’s been so many years,” explained owner Jane McLaren, who said that this is not the first time that she has entered a photo into the Pet Valu contest.

“Everybody has the best dogs in the world and the nicest dogs in the world and that’s true so I might as well enter. Anybody will say the same thing and we’re all right. Every single one of us is right. I do it for fun,” McLaren said.

McLaren explained that the winning photo was taken by Rachel Bird Photography and that the dogs were chasing her as she ran ahead of them as fast as she could.

Since 2010, Companions for Change initiatives have raised over $23 million for hundreds of Canadian animal rescues and charities, and they have found forever homes for more than 41,000 homeless pets.

The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit is supported by Companions for Change. In 2022 the mobile clinic made three trips to Cornwall. This year, a total of 169 spay/neuter procedures were performed, which prevented more than an estimated 8,250 unplanned kittens in the community.

HGMH opening respiratory illness Clinical Assessment Centre in Alexandria

The Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) and Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) are announcing the opening of a respiratory illness clinical assessment centre in Alexandria to test, assess, and provide treatment to children and adults with symptoms of respiratory illnesses like a cold, flu, COVID19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other viral respiratory illnesses.

Individuals should visit the clinical assessment centre if they or children in their care: • don’t have a primary care provider

• have symptoms that are getting worse or are not improving, and medical care is needed

• have been told by a health professional to go to a clinical assessment centre

• are at high risk of getting very sick from COVID-19 and qualify for COVID-19 testing and treatment

The clinical assessment centre at HGMH will open its doors on Thursday, December 15 and operate by appointment on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Appointments can be booked online at www.hgmh.on.ca/clinic, or by calling 613525-2222, extension 4177 if you’re having difficulty using the online booking system. Appointments will be available within 24 hours of booking the consultation, and the assessment centre will run through the holidays and until the current surge in respiratory illnesses subsides.

In order to leave appointments available for those most in need, individuals who have a primary care provider are encouraged to contact them first. Your family doctor or nurse practitioner will provide you with advice about how to care for yourself or your child at home and will see you in-person or virtually if needed. Depending on your symptoms, your primary care provider may also ask you to head to a clinical assessment centre.

When to head to the emergency department instead of the clinical assessment centre

The clinical assessment centre’s purpose is to alleviate the strain on hospital emergency departments and allow individuals with respiratory illness symptoms to be seen faster. However, if you or your child have any of the following severe symptoms, you must call 911 immediately or head to the emergency department:

For adults: Shortness of breath; Chest pain; Loss of consciousness; Confusion

For children: Working hard to breathe (the lower chest is moving in more than normal when the child breathes, nostrils are flaring, child is grunting); Bluish skin; Unable to breastfeed or drink; Very sleepy or difficult to wake; Peeing less than usual • Fever with rash; Seizures or convulsions; Fever in an infant younger than 3 months

“Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital has been experiencing an increase of patients visiting our emergency department with res piratory illnesses, just as many other hospi tals across the province. Patients’ symptoms often include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and sore throat, to name a few. This leads to higher wait times in emergency departments throughout the region. To help support emergency department volumes in the region, HGMH will open a clinic specific ally for patients with mild to moderate symptoms of a cough, cold, flu, or COVID,” says Robert Alldred-Hughes, President and CEO of HGMH. “Patients can schedule themselves or even their entire family an appointment through the online booking portal to be assessed by a nurse and a doctor. Our staff continue to work diligently at the front lines of the ongoing health challenges and this clinic is just one more way our team is stepping up to fill a need for our communities and health system partners,” Alldred-Hughes further added.

For more information about the clinical assessment centre, call 613-525-2222, extension 4177. Appointments can be booked online at www.hgmh.on.ca/clinic.

The Cornwall Sea Lions swim club hosted its annual Snowflake Swim Meet on Nov 25-27 at the Aquatic Centre. Over 300 swimmers from a variety of clubs within Eastern Ontario travelled to Cornwall with their families to take part in one of the first local meets since COVID.

“Prior to the pandemic, our Invitational Snowflake Meet was an annual 3-day event with teams from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec attending. As restrictions have lifted, we are happy to be back in full swing,” said Corissa Chadwick, board member and communications for Cornwall Sea Lions.

“The swim meet was a huge success on many levels, having new swimmers to our club competing for the first time, having our experienced swimmers making personal best and qualifying times, but also having a strong turn out in parent volunteers and local

business donations,” Chadwick explained, “A true community event with community involvement.”

The Snowflake Swim Meet couldn’t happen without the support of volunteers; all the officials and timers at the meet are dedicated parents and family members. Local restaurants and grocery stores stepped in to donate food to keep the swimmers and their families fed over the course of the event.

On average, young swimmers spend about 2 hours per week training for swim meets and competitions, while senior swimmers put in as many as 11 to 14 hours per week, as well as time in the gym using weights to condition the body.

“It was great to see how strong our swimmers have become under the guidance of Coach Cory McRae and Coach Linda Paradis, and we are excited to see what the season has in store for our team,” Chadwick added.

Ghost Walk raises over $30,000

(December 2022) – Cornwall’s Ghost Walk for Charity raises $30,000 for six local charities this year. The event took place at The Cornwall Square upstairs on the second level.

Throughout the week in October more than 4000 people came through and braved the spooky walk organizers put together in the spirit of Halloween. Many people travelled from out of town to attend this growing event.

As we reflect back on the success of our 2022 events, we would like to thank our supporters, sponsors and volunteers and Cornwall Tourism for making 2022 our most successful year to date.

Due to your unwavering support, we were able to raise a whopping $30,000, which will be distributed evenly amongst the selected charities:

Centre 105 $5000.00

Cornwall Comfort Quilts $5000.00

Cornwall Canada Day $5000.00

Diversity Cornwall $5000.00

Habitat for Humanity $5000.00

Salesian Youth Centre $5000.00

Year over year, we continue to grow, which ultimately translates to more monetary support for local, not-for-profit organizations within our community. The Ghost Walk for Charity will also be announcing a new grant program supporting needs throughout the entire year for organizations in need.

Our partnerships with sponsors and volunteers are vital to the success of our events, and we are truly humbled by your continued support.

We look forward to another successful season in 2023

God looked upon his garden, and found an empty space. He then looked down from heaven, upon the earth, and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, and lifted you to rest; God’s garden must be beautiful, for He only takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, He then closed your weary eyes and whispered, “Peace be thine.” It broke out hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, to God’s garden, your new home.

Sadly missed, and forever in our hearts. Love, Dale, Debbie, Cassie and Cole

Our U15A representatives, Isabelle Pilon and Allie Robertson, proudly carried the flags at Canada East vs USA game in the Junior A Challenge on Wednesday. Way to go, ladies! Wednesday, December 14 was CAPE night at the WJAC game. Some of Seaway News’ staff caught up Randy and Carol and the CAPE crew for a photo op. A tribute to Dave Ezard took place before the game. His daughter (above left) along with his grandchildren were on hand for the ceremonial puck drop. Tournament photographer Rob Lefebvre (below right) was on hand working his magic … Happy belated 65 birthday, Rob! Seaway News was proud to be a sponsor for the World Junior A Challenge.

Doucet NEWS FROM THE SQUARE

Did you know that today is December 21st with only 4 shopping days left until Santa magically appears from the chimney in his gleaming Red and White suit. Have you ever looked up a chimney, not the cleanest slide in town, yet Santa emerges clean as a whistle from head to toe and to my knowledge has never spread gobs of soot all over people’s living room. That is all part of the mystique and lore surrounding the jolly fellow who goes around trying to make children’s wishes come true on this very special day of the year.

Did you know that the Sparky’s Toy Drive yielded an amazing amount of toy donations here at The Square. We thank all those people who took the time and effort to purchase those toys for the Cornwall Fire Department’s Sparky Toy Drive.

Cornwall Square will be closed on December 25th, Christmas Day to allow all of those who work at The Square to be with their loved ones for the day and to rest up

for Boxing Day with its treasure trove of bargains to dazzle and amaze every shopper who dares to venture out. How we transition so quickly from Merry Christmas to Happy Boxing Day and once again Happy Shopping.

On behalf of the Weaving Baskets Group (“WBG”), all the merchants here at the Cornwall Square and the on-site mall staff of Laurie, Duncan, Todd, Ray, Kody, Adam, Bob, Marianne, Amanda, Mike, James and yours truly “WE

ALL WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A DAY FULL OF JOY”

Did you know that in next week’s News From The Square, the last of 2022, there will be a long awaited announcement. So, stay tuned.

Did you know that you still have 4 days left to come and see Santa at centre court on the main level and gaze up to the east end of the skylight to see Rudolph looking over the edge and keeping an eye on Santa to make sure he hits the road in time to deliver all of those presents to all the boys and girls who most certainly have been very good.

Remember, Shop local, Shop indoors, Shop The Square, and support your local merchants that make up Cornwall’s retail sector.

Last week we lost another great community member Don Grant. Don was a long time Kinsmen member and helped raise lots of much needed money throughout the years in Kinsmen events. Don also was a BCL employee but best remembered as a driving instructor. Later in years Don eyesight left him but he still remained active. He even golfed with the boys and still bet them. GRANT, Donald David – passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Heartwood Long Term Care Home at the age of 91 years. Loving husband of 66 years to Avril Anne Grant (née Fleming). Dear father of Graham Grant (Susan) and Heather Grant.

Message from the Renaissance Association

The Renaissance Association, a grassroots group, which was established two years ago is looking forward to the New Year which will continue to build a network of supporters to meet its objective of acquiring a clean, safe and law-abiding district here in the east end.

Reflecting on our accomplishments we believe a lot of ground has been broken and within a short time, in part due to productive meetings with key players such as the Police Department and the Fire Department as well as one with Building and Bylaw officials.

Our hope and vision for 2023 is seeing many if not most neglected properties in the

district being cared for, a more attractive Montreal Rd., clean yards, new sidewalks in the le village sector, few to no fires in the east end, a significant increase in property standards enforcement and proactivity.

Our executive wishes to thank all of those who have contributed their time and effort towards achieving our goals. A special thanks to the Seaway News for printing our newsletters!

Please let us know if you have suggestions or wish to support our organization by contacting renaissanceassociation@gmail. com. All the best in 2023!
