Local hairstylist makes it to the big screen

Local hairstylist Marc-Andre Levac has done hair professionally for 13 years. Earlier this year, Marc started making wigs and shipping them worldwide, including to customers from RuPaul’s

Drag Race. This summer he landed his first gig doing hair for a Hallmark movie. Since then, Levac has worked on six movies and a music video – what a wild end to 2022!

“Whenever I was a little kid, I wanted to be Oprah’s hairstylist (which I don’t understand because she’s never had good hair) but I’ve always liked doing hair. I learned how to French braid when I was like six,” Levac told Seaway News. Marc-Andre has done some amazing work over the years. He is known in town for his unique and colorful hair dye jobs and has worked on many themed photoshoots. In May, he traveled to LA for DragCon and got to see Lemon perform in a wig he made specially for the event.

Since then Levac has worked on several movies, including: The Most Colorful Time of the Year, Fly Away with Me, A New Diva’s Christmas Carol, and Record Breaking Christmas.

He has several other projects in the pipeline that he’s excited to share with everyone soon – and even got to play the role of the sassy hairstylist in one movie!

Marc currently works at Pure Organic Spa and travels to Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal frequently for work. See complete story and photos online at cornwallseawaynews.com

Another season of winter fun at Big Ben

PROVIDED BY CORNWALL TOURISM

Big Ben is back for another season of winter fun and visitors can expect a mix of new and familiar experiences at the local ski hill.

“The hill is in great shape, I’ve never seen it look this good this early on,” said Brett Lauzon, operations manager at Big Ben.

Visitors are sure to notice some changes to the hill, the most obvious being a new terrain park featuring rails, steps and jumps for snowboarders looking to work on their freestyle skills.

“It’s meant to teach kids how to do tricks and maneuver (before they go to bigger hills),” Lauzon added.

Lauzon and crew have also created a new run through the tree system at Big Ben for those seeking another new adventure.

That’s on top of other new experiences that were introduced at Big Ben last year and are

set to return once more this season. Among them are a 55 by 85-foot ice skating rink (skating only), a coffee and hot chocolate bar and fire pit and a 2.7 km walking and snowshoeing trail that brings adventurers all the way to the top of the hill.

“It’s so cool at the top of the trail, the view is amazing,” Lauzon said. “It’s definitely one of the highest points in Cornwall.”

Last season brought a huge jump in attendance at Big Ben, with visitors coming from eastern Ontario, Quebec and the United States joining local residents under the lights on the hill. The Big Ben team are looking to build on that success by continuing to develop and enhance the overall experience at the hill.

“We’ve done a lot of work in the off-season to continue to create a fun and enjoyable experience for visitors,” Lauzon said.

Rediscover the pleasure of storytelling

Have you always loved reading but now find it difficult to see the words on the page? Do you find it hard to hold heavy books?

Regardless of whether your reading ability has diminished, you can still experience the magic

What’s an audiobook?

An audiobook is a publication — be it a crime novel, fantasy series or biography — recorded in an audible medium. The reader may be a volunteer, celebrity, professional reader or the book’s author. Your listening experience may be enhanced by the intonations in the reader’s voice or whether the recording includes sound effects.

What does it look like?

The audiobook may be in the form of a digital file or a compact disk. If it’s a digital file, you may need to download it to a device to enjoy it. A simple internet connection may work as well.

How do you listen to an audiobook?

If the audiobook is on a compact disk, simply insert it directly into an appropriate reader and press play.

For a digital file, it may take a few steps to listen online or via an app downloaded to your tablet or smartphone.

Where do you get them?

Digital audiobooks are available on several online platforms, like online libraries or e-reader businesses. You can get compact disks from your local library. A library is a great option if you’re on a tight budget. Whatever format you select, make sure you choose one compatible with your device.

Happy listening!

Winter Home Comfort Tips

This time of year, we are all busy. So rather than go on about the market, this seemed like the perfect time to share some winter home comfort tips.

Humidifier

Winter is always a very dry time. If you have a humidifier, it is time to use it. First, make sure you clean it and clean or change the filter. You want to do your best to make sure your humidifier is not clogged. CLR or a cleaning agent of that nature is perfect for cleaning it out and having it winter ready in no time.

Windows

Let your windows breathe. What does this mean? Make sure your curtains and blinds re not always closed. Having proper air circulation will ensure there is a lot less mildew and will help your window seals last longer. It does not hurt every now and then to wipe down the

humidity off the windows. If your screens are on the inside, take them down for the winter, it adds a little more light in.

Furnace

If you have not been doing so regularly, now is the perfect time to replace the furnace filter.

Keeping the air clean in the house lowers the risk of spreading germs and reduces asthma and other respiratory issues.

Speaking of filters, did you know if your fridge has a water dispenser, it probably has a filter? Might be a good time to look into seeing if it needs cleaning or replacing.

Preparing for Winter Storms

It is important in the winter to keep an eye on the weather and what is expected. Try to stay 3 days in advance. This gives you plenty of time to prepare for the freezing rain or snow, so that you have what you need at home and do not need to go out on those stormy days.

And finally,

Wishing you all a prosperous, healthy New Year! All the best for 2023!

High Energy Transport opens new Cornwall warehouse

Cornwall Ontario - Another leading transportation sector has chosen Cornwall to expand its role in serving Canada’s supply chain sector.

High Energy Transport is launching its new container business and has opened a new facility in the Cornwall Business Park. The state-of-the-art facility will be able to handle 20 and 40 ft containers that can be picked up from or shipped to the Port of Montreal.

“The Cornwall container facility is slated to be fully operational in December 2022 or early January 2023, says Pierre Mousseau, President and CEO of High Energy Transport. “With close coordination and daily hauls between our Bolton Head Office and our new

Cornwall warehouse, we can effectively and quickly serve our customers between the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Montreal.”

It is a homecoming for Mr. Mousseau, who grew up in Cornwall and attended La Citadelle High School.

High Energy Transport will be offering destuffing, warehousing, cross-docking and shipping services to its clients in the Cornwall facility.

“We also have a commercial moving/install division and are ready to serve Cornwall and area for office moves,” adds Mr. Mousseau. “We treat and value every single customer as if they were our very first client.”

High Energy Transport is featured in the 2022 Year in Review report by Cornwall Economic Development.

One Circle Painting

Cornwall Police Services’ Chief Shawna Spowart recently commissioned a painting by local artist, Yafa Goawily, to be hung in her office. An unveiling was held on December 20, 2022, at CPS headquarters. “At the heart of everything I feel like I believe in, that we’re doing in this organization and me personally, revolves around this concept of equity, diversity, and inclusivity. When I look at the walls that’s what I want to see. I want to see a reflection of the work that is being done and the work that needs to continue,” shared Chief Spowart.

The chief told attendees, who included CPS staff, Mayor Justin Towndale, Grand Chief Abram Benedict, as well as members of the local press and art community, about her journey to find the right artist for the piece. Spowart was first

drawn to Yafa’s art at an exhibit she attended at the Cornwall Square. She then ran into the artist at an art dinner and decided Yafa was the artist she was looking for.

“I am really honored and blessed that I can share this part of me with you,” said Yafa, “When I do art, a part of myself is in the piece. This piece is really special because I was starting with the intention of working with the community in general, but never thought I was going to work with the police.” Goawily shared that living in Egypt during a time of civil unrest and violence caused her to fear the police and army forces.

After living in Canada for just five years, having this opportunity and touring the Cornwall Police offices that day helped Yafa overcome her anxieties and create important connections between the community and those who serve it.

with developmental and physical disabilities, and they’ve had a busy holiday season.

Participants offered affordable photo sessions to the public in December with a beautiful winter backdrop. They did a great job greeting guests, hanging coats, handling the cash, and taking photos of families and babies as young as one month old.

Participants also did some in-house shopping thanks to the community who generously donated new and gently used items. All items were priced between $0.05 - $5.00. It was great practice engaging with handling cash and with gift wrapping.

Beyond21 expressed their ‘immense gratitude’ to the community that has helped them get to where they are today.

“In the new year, our focus will remain growing our program and helping reduce our waitlist of 30+ eligible participants,” shares Founder and Chair of the Board, Tish Humphries.

‘Weird’ hit and run case made legal history

example of the man.

McIntosh MAC’S MUSINGS

In what was believed to be a first in Ontario, a Charlottenburgh Township man was found guilty by Mag. P. C. Bergeron in January 1938 of leaving the scene of an accident that caused the death of an animal.

He was fined $50. The victim was a dog owned by a local farmer.

A bystander who witnessed the incident gave police the licence plate number and description of the driver.

Defence attorney Lionel Chevrier (future MP/Liberal cabinet minister) argued that the driver had no obligation to remain at the scene, but Mag. Bergeron had a different take on the driver’s duty.

“It is a motorist’s duty to stop (after hitting an animal),” said the magistrate. “To see if he can render assistance.”

That left lawyer Chevrier wondering,“Does that mean if a motorist strikes a chicken or any other small animal, such as a squirrel, he must stop?”

Well, in most cases yes, said the magistrate.

“I will make an exception only in the case of a skunk. In that case, it might not be wise to stop,” said the magistrate.

In another animal related case the same month, Bergeron nailed a city man with a 40-day jail sentence for animal cruelty, a charge laid by the SPCA.

The man was given 20 days but when he said he could not come up with the fine ($50), the magistrate added 20 more days to the sentence.

Court was told that the animal died after the man treated its leg wounds with lime. The horse had to be put down by a veterinarian.

The owner of the horse argued the animal was not worth much, since he had traded a hen for it.

Bergeron said he wanted to make an

Down the street at the county court house, Judge F. T. Costello ruled that the United Counties had to pay two Charlottenburgh Township residents – Mrs. Catherine Purcell and Mrs. Annie Craig – a total of $15,255 for 14 1/2 acres it wanted to expropriate for the new St. Lawrence Tuberculosis Sanatorium (now an Islamic Centre).

Lawyers for the property owners argued that their clients were owed much more because portions of the properties were on the waterfront.

They noted that waterfront properties east of Cornwall were becoming a cottage mecca for city residents with 175 summer residences along the St. Lawrence River between the city and Lancaster.

However, the judge said the waterfront lots in the expropriation case had a “great view” but he considered them unsuitable for a cottage or home.

The judge ordered the counties to pay the legal fees incurred by the property owners. * * * * * * * * * * *

Dr. W. A. Milligan became the Cornwall mayor with the shortest time in office. A record that still stands.

The Cornwall physician resigned on Jan. 15, 1938 just seven days after he was sworn in. He stepped down to become the new medical officer of health for the United Counties, a position that paid $1,200 a year. The position became vacant when veteran MOH Dr. J.C. Hamilton died.

The health unit said Dr. Ian Gourlay and Dr. John Tallon also were considered for the vacant position but the board decided to offer the job to Dr. Milligan.

The previous shortest mayoral term was held by W. J. Deruchie who was forced to leave office 14 days after being sworn in. A delayed recount declared his opponent Richard Larmour the winner.

Up to 1938, the longest serving mayor was William Cox Allen, first elected in 1862 He spent 11 years in the mayor’s office. This mark was eclipsed by Aaron Horovitz

Freshly-minted provincial legislation that required Ontario judges to hand out jail sentences to drivers convicted of being drunk while behind the wheel was not going to change anything in the local court. Mag. P. C. Bergeron noted he made it his practice to sentence persons convicted of drunk driving to 20 days in jail, even for a first offence. The new provincial guideline was seven to 30 days.

HERE AND THERE Kingston’s main hospital is attempting to fill 200 staff vacancies with a financial carrot that provides a $10,000 signing bonus for full-time recruits and $5,000 for part-timers. Staff member are being offered $3,000 for referrals. And for those living more than 200 kilometres from Kingston, there is a re-location

payment of up to $15,000. Most of the vacancies are the result of retirements.

TRIVIA Jane Stewart, MP for Brant, was a member of Jean Chretien’s cabinet. Her father was a former leader of the provincial Liberal party and her grandfather was a former premier of Ontario. What was her maiden name?

QUOTED “The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.” - Lucille Ball

ONE FINAL THING Breaking news as this column was going to bed: Good for Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique for calling out the court/justice system in the wake of the murder of rookie officer Greg Pierzchala. One of the accused with a record of violence was (again) out on bail thanks to the generosity of the court/ justice system which has become a bad joke. There was a warrant for his arrest for yet again breaking bail conditions. Too many leaders at the top of the policing family, unlike Carrique, are terrified of offending the system and its pampered jurists to say what the commissioner said.

Editor, Canadian government is too generous to a fault, with too many other countries, at the expense of the hard-working Canadian taxpayer. We need “Trudeau” to start giving more of
own taxes to our Canadian hospitals, patients, and medical personnel, whom are on the verge of collapsing. This would be a great start and you may generate more respect from Canadian taxpayers.
Dear

* * * * * * * * * * *

Thumbs up and a huge thank you to the Hydro crew who worked long and hard hours to bring us back our electricity. God Bless and Happy New Year to all.

This is Bill, one of the heavy operators at Herb’s Towing, he’s was the road helping first responders reopening highways instead of being home with his family on Christmas. Their staff worked relentlessly to free public and first responders that were stuck due to the storm! Thanks Bill!

These residents have been waiting in the freezing cold because there is only one walk in clinic in Cornwall. Once their quota is full you are turned away. This is my second trip here. I’m very discouraged that family medicine In Cornwall Ontario is below par. We pay taxes. We are good citizens. We need good services.

Happy 104th Birthday on Dec. 31, 2022, Mdm Muller! Living through her 3rd pandemic, Henriette Muller, of Alexandria, celebrated her 104rd Birthday. She was born in Germany in 1918, the same year the Spanish Flu outbreak began. The resident of Chateau Glengarry Retirement Living Center has two children, three grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren, relates son Wolfgang Muller. “Again this year she fights COVID successfully together with other residents all safe and sound and celebrate her birthday with high spirt. We also sent flowers and delivered a cake for all residents and staff to enjoy,” he says. On 20th Dec. 2022, she was dancing with the staff and Santa.

Welcome 2023!

Doucet NEWS FROM THE SQUARE

As we continue the road to recovery from the effects of the pandemic and its successors, we can only hope to stay ahead of the curve, roll with the surprises that befall us and try to make the 2023 year a transformative one. Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone Good Health, More Wealth, and a year full of Fun and Happiness as we all deserve it.

Did you know that here at Cornwall Square, 2023 is starting on a transformative note with the renovation of the Food Court into the Food Hall. The work begins next week as we create the new Food Hall entrance archway as a prelude to the next step of completely changing the look and feel of the seating area into a modern, tech-friendly, warm environment for Food Hall patrons to sit and enjoy their food consumption experience here at Cornwall Square. More details on the next Food Hall

steps in the coming weeks.

Did you know that the Food Court/Food Hall restaurants will be open during the renovation process and that when the time comes to remove the existing customer seating area in late January or early February, we have a change of scenery for our diners that will allow patrons to continue dining in here at Cornwall Square

Did you know that the Winter Farmers’ Market will be returning to Cornwall Square on Saturday mornings starting on January 7th. The Winter Farmers’ Market will be located on the west side of Centre Court on the main level.

Cornwall Square would like to thank all of its customers near and far, who in 2022, chose to patronize all of the Cornwall Square stores, be they national chain stores, independent merchants or those vendors who make up The Marketplace throughout the year. All of us are here to meet your shopping needs.

Remember, in 2023. Shop local, Shop indoors, Shop the Square, and support your local merchants that make up Cornwall’s retail sector.
