Breaking ground
Cornwall Honda recently broke ground on its new 28,000 sq.ft. dealership facility that was designed from the ground up and located on a four-acre site. The investment is in anticipation and preparation for Honda’s electrified future while introducing environmental best practices to the operations of the dealership.
The new site is expected to open in late 2023 at 2660 Brookdale Ave., Cornwall, ON.
Just as Cornwall Honda was part of the original group of Honda Dealers in Canada to welcome the newly launched Honda Civic to customers in 1973, they will parallel that milestone 50 years later with the upcoming Honda Prologue.
“Customer shopping habits continue to change and the Cornwall Honda experience will not only evolve to reflect how customers want to shop but also the new products and services they want,” said Bill Woolley, Dealer Principal, Cornwall Honda.

Permanent mental health money sought by SD&G OPP
PHILLIP BLANCHER Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
CORNWALL – A program to divert mental health calls from mainline police services in SDG Counties is seeking permanent funding in the upcoming municipal budget.
SD&G OPP Detachment Commander Marc Hemmerick presented an update on the Mobile Crisis Response Team program, and
his budget request, at the December 19 SDG Counties Council meeting.
Highlighting the program’s accomplishments in its second year of operation, Hemmerick told council that involuntary apprehensions are down 42.5 per cent, and diversion to mental health services are up 45.3 per cent.
“That is a pretty phenomenal number that
we have taken [apprehensions] down that low,” Hemmerick said. “That’s very important. We are saving officer time, we’re saving client time and stress, we’re saving community time and we’re also saving repeat time.
He said that diversions are the more important statistic.

New year, new you…sound familiar?
Jennifer Desnoyers
Simply Unwrapped
SIMPLY JENNIFER
As we move into the New Year, many take this time to set goals for themselves. Especially in food and movement. We seek more nourishing foods; crave improvement in our range of motion, and want to challenge our strength. Eating healthy and being mindful of the food we put into our bodies does not have to be boring or difficult and should be scene as a lifestyle change, not a goal. You just need to be open minded, consistent and ready for the journey. Some of my favorite recipes are some of the most simple in preparation. As much as I enjoy being in the kitchen, I too have days where I am looking for something quick without picking up the phone! One of the key ingredients to my success in being able to pro vide nourishing meals for my family is prepping ahead, organizing my time and my recipes. Here is a recipe that I love and do not make often enough but seem to crave it more as we move into a new year. The following recipe is for one serving, one bowl. So many variations can be made, use this as a base and add all your favorites. Enjoy
Mediterranean Grain Bowl
1 cup cooked quinoa or rice
2 cups of baby spinach
½ red onion, diced
½ cup quartered cherry tomatoes (optional)
½ English cucumber, diced
¼ cup pitted black olive
Crumbled Feta (can opt for any cheese)
3 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and Pepper to taste
Chopped parsley for serving, sometimes I like to switch it out for fresh dill or basil.
Assemble the six first ingredients in the order provided, I like using a large serving bowl. Then Squeeze the fresh lemon, drizzle olive oil, season with salt/pepper and voila! Toss it up and enjoy. You can also add any type of protein to it as well.
The power of music: Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that affects memory, thinking and behaviour. As the disease progresses, patients often struggle to do everyday tasks. January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Canada, an opportunity to raise awareness and fight stigmas around this disease that affects more than 700,000 Canadians.
Did you know that music benefits Alzheimer’s patients in varying stages of the disease? Musical memories often remain intact for quite some time because the condition leaves the critical brain areas linked to music relatively undamaged.
Studies show that Alzheimer’s patients feel more focused and engaged while listening to music. Music also evokes positive emotions and memories, which can help relieve the stress and anxiety that often accompany this disease. Moreover, listening to music encourages purposeful movement, like dancing and swaying, which promotes good physical health.
Listening to music can also benefit caregivers by providing a way to connect with their loved ones, especially with those who have difficulty verbally
communicating in the later stages of the disease. This Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, help a loved one reconnect with the soundtrack of their lives with the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
The Music Project provides MP3 players loaded with personalized playlists to people living with dementia to improve their quality of life. For more information, visit alzheimer.ca.

CPS focused on off-road vehicles for January traffic initiative
Cornwall, ON - During the month of January, the Cornwall Police Service (CPS) will be increasing its enforcement efforts surrounding the unlawful use of off-road vehicles. Police will be monitoring city streets and recreational areas, such as parks and bicycle paths, to enforce violations under the Highway Traffic Act.
The CPS has noted public complaints regarding off-road vehicles being driven aggressively on city roadways, creating hazards for other road users. There has also been noticeable damage to boulevards throughout the City of Cornwall as a result of off-road vehicle tires damaging the grass.
Off-road vehicles are not permitted to operate on any streets within the City of Cornwall. Operators caught driving an off-road vehicle

The CPS recommends that off-road vehicle owners trailer their off-road vehicles to approved trails.
Residents of Cornwall will note increased police patrols and traffic-stop programs at known areas where off-road vehicles have been reported to travel.
Enhancing traffic safety is a major objective within the CPS Strategic Plan. As such, monthly safety initiatives have been developed to keep the public informed and promote safer roadways and bike paths. These initiatives will be carried out by the Traffic Unit, as well as Community Patrol Officers.
CFS Fire Prevention Division, in collaboration with the Ontario Fire Marshal, Cornwall Police Service, Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are investigating.
The investigation to determine the cause of the fire is still ongoing however there is no threat to public safety. No further information will be released pending the investigation.
Tragically, there were 133 fire-related deaths in Ontario in 2022. The highest number of fire-related deaths in more than 20 years.
BRITTNEY WALDROFF
New leader takes the helm of Aultsville Theatre
PROVIDED BY CORNWALL TOURISM
There’s a new general manager heading up operations at Cornwall’s Aultsville Theatre.
Brittney Waldroff has recently taken on the role of general manager of the 680-seat performing arts venue, and she is no stranger to the theatre – or the community.
Waldroff was born and raised in Long Sault and the pandemic led her family back home in 2021 after some time away where she built a successful career in events and communications.
“I’m thrilled to have joined the team here at the theatre and have been welcomed so warmly by our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and patrons. For so many of us who grew up in the area, Aultsville Theatre has been the scene of milestone events whether it be seeing a favourite performer, performing
in a dance recital or music festival or crossing the stage at convocation,” Waldroff said.
Located on the campus of St. Lawrence College, Aultsville Theatre hosts dozens of concerts, plays and other special events throughout the year for the enjoyment of both local residents and visitors.
“I’m proud to be a part of the team leading the organization as we look to 2023 and beyond,” Waldroff added.
It’s already shaping up to be a big year at the theatre, with a number of performances already booked for 2023. In addition to the ongoing Cornwall Concert Series, fans can look forward to the Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s presentation of The Sound of Music from February 17th to 25th as well as a concert by Hotel California, the original Eagles tribute, on March 30th.

Hunters wrongfully targeted —again - by Liberals
be clear: hunting rifles are not the problem, and no one believes that going after hunters, and legitimate hunting rifles will reduce violent crime in this country.
Lending a helping hand
Michelle O’Shaughnessy South Glengarry Updates COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
MP FOR STORMONT, DUNDAS & SOUTH GLENGARRY
Despite a winter parliamentary recess, the issue of firearms and government overreach continues to be of concern to myself and the residents of our community.
To put it simply, the most important job of any government is to keep you safe. Sadly, new Statistics Canada data has shown just how badly public safety has eroded nationally under the Trudeau government’s watch.
The facts are staggering: since 2015, violent crime is up 32% across Canada, and gang homicides are up 92%. It is not by chance that this major crime increase has happened under a Liberal Government. In fact, there is a direct correlation to soft-on-crime policies, like the weakening of sentencing laws by Justin Trudeau, and the increase in violent crime.
The Liberals repealed mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes, have made it easier to get bail, and have failed to stop the flow of illegal guns from coming across the US border. This disturbing trend needs to stop and be reversed. The Liberals approach to gun crime is going further in the wrong direction by targeting law-abiding hunters and sports shooters here in our community. Newly introduced amendments to the Liberal’s Bill C-21 will ban millions of commonly used hunting rifles. Let’s
What’s worse is the way this ban was introduced. It was done in a sneaky, underhanded, and undemocratic way that did not allow for a parliamentary debate or experts to provide testimony.
Instead of going after the illegal guns used by criminals and gangs, the Liberals and NDP have chosen to target law-abiding hunters, farmers, and Indigenous people.
Furthermore, the Premiers of all 13 provinces and territories recently signed a letter addressed to the Prime Minister arguing that the time for action on bail reform is now. They agree with Conservatives that Justin Trudeau’s approach to crime has failed, and the shocking crime statistics speak for themselves.
Conservatives support common-sense firearms policies that will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals. A law-abiding, licensed hunter in St. Andrew’s West or Finch is not a public safety risk. An emboldened gang leader in Brampton with illegal guns and a list of repeat violent convictions is the real problem that must be addressed.
Law-abiding, outdoor loving rural Canadians just want to be left alone and not targeted by their government.
I couldn’t agree more and Conservatives will continue this fight when Parliament resumes in a few short days.
The Township of South Glengarry is a vibrant and rural community that connects people with their families, friends, recreation, places of work, and services. During the win ter, the Township’s winter operations prioritize the safety and mobility of residents in a man ner that is reasonable and consistent with the needs of a rural road network.
The routine winter maintenance activities that are carried out by the Township’s Roads crew include winter patrolling, snow removal (plowing), material application (sanding / salting), and ice removal (ice blading). Of the 385 kilometers of roads that the Township clears, almost 165 kilometers are gravel, which can be challenging during ice events.
Helping whenever possible is always appreciated! Here are some things you can do to give our crew and your neighbours a hand during a winter event:
• Do not shovel snow or ice onto the public roadway
• Stay home until the event has passed and the roads have been cleared, when possible
• Clear the ice/or snow from walkways and public areas in front of your house if possible
• Clear snow and ice from fire hydrants, if possible
• Make sure your garbage and recycling bins can be seen and that they are not placed on the snowbank or in the roadway
• Have patience!
A commonly asked question at the Township is: “Why do snowplow trucks sometimes drive around when it’s not snowing?”
1. Ongoing training for the drivers to familiarize themselves with their route and identify obstructions (mailboxes) and challenging maneuvers; generally keeping their skills sharp!
2. Trucks may be pushing back snow after the main portion of the roadway has been cleared in anticipation of the next big weather event
For more information about winter maintenance activities, we encourage you to visit our website www.southglengarry.com/en/living-here.aspx

Three days before his execution date of Jan. 23, 1953, and with the hammering and sawing by workers building the hangman’s scaffold in the United Counties Jail courtyard drifting into his tiny condemned-man‘s cell, the anxious prisoner had a visitor.
It was United Counties Sheriff McNaughton. In his hand was a telegram from the office of the governor-general in council’s office.
An appeal by his skilled defence lawyer, J. C. Horowitz of Ottawa, to have the death penalty commuted on grounds of mental incompetence was successful.
Instead of being executed on Jan. 26, 1953, he was sent to Kingston Penitentiary to serve a life sentence for the murder of a young Harrison’s Corners farm wife.
The 21-year-old district native was a hired hand for the dead woman’s husband. She had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death.
It took two trials to convict the man. At each trial, Horowitz argued that his client was mentally ill. In all, five psychiatrists testified at the trials as expert witnesses. Three agreed with the defence, two disagreed. For whatever reason, the jury in the second trial accepted the opinion of the two doctors who sided with the prosecution, that the accused was of sound mind.
Horowitz called the conviction and death penalty a colossal miscarriage of justice and launched an appeal.
After receiving the news of his successful appeal, Horowitz urged the judge to asked that his client be evaluated by an independent psychiatrist in Kingston.
ALSO THIS MONTH IN 1953 – The local Bell Telephone office reported it took 118 telephone operators at the Pitt Street exchange to handle 102,566 operator-assisted local calls on Dec. 31 and 71,767 calls on New Year’s Day. In addition to the local calls, there was a total of 2,970 long distance calls over the two days. Overseas calls had to be booked in November. A large number of the calls were to Great Britain. ... A total of 6,500 discarded Christmas trees were burned over a six-day period at the city dump on Ontario Street. ... The Cornwall Police Commission turned down a request by the Cornwall Taxi Association to have meters installed in cabs. Meanwhile, the commission gave permission to Club Radio Taxi to open a stand on Water Street East. ... Alex Abugov purchased The Fashion Shoppe at 244 Pitt St. He would later open the Vogue Shoppe on Montreal Road. ... The United Counties passed a resolution asking the Ontario government to establish a
central location for hangings. It also asked the provincial government to replace appointments to school boards with elections. ... White bread enriched with vitamins removed during the baking process appeared in Cornwall with much fanfare which claimed it was equal that of whole wheat bread in nutritional value. ... Fern Gosselin was elected president of the Cornwall Community Sports Club. Marcel Bourgon was vice-president. ... The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, the Ontario Cheese Producers and Ontario Federation of Agriculture all urged the federal government to ban the sale and use of vegetable oils. They said it was a threat to the dairy industry. ... St. Columban’s Youth outscored Canadian Legion 10-7 in a City Junior Hockey League game. Lutt Bergeron led the Legion with three goals for the winners. Roger St. Jean, Rheal St. Jean, Norm Baril, Earl Landon, Harley Desnoyers, Luke Emard and Rousseau also scored. Doug Hawn, two, Ed Herrington, Floyd McRae, Stu McConkey, Garry Grant and Ron Riley had one apiece for the Legion club.
If you want to pay out of pocket to avoid an hours-long wait in the Cornwall Community Hospital emergency department for a non-emergency, there is an express lane about 30 minutes away.
Know of two residents who took their non-emergency (aka non-life threatening issue) to a medical clinic in Massena.
One tells of waiting seven hours in the overwhelmed crowded Cornwall ER after having an x-ray for a suspected respiratory infection.
He decided to throw in the towel and drive to a Massena clinic. Within half an hour of arriving he was examined by a doctor on duty, given the test result and sent on his way with a prescription for bronchitis. The cost: $80 US.
Another resident tells of a similar experience at a Massena clinic after giving up on a 10-hour wait in the local ER. Said it was the best $80 he ever spent. Said the wait was less than 20 minutes.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Cornwall lawyer S. E. (Stan) Fennell served one term as president of the Canadian Bar Association, the only Cornwall lawyer to hold the prestigious post.
TRIVIA: In February 1969 former Cornwall Royals trainer Ray Moquin became the first Cornwall/United Counties resident to undergo this medical procedure 1) Open heart surgery, 2) Lung transplant, 3) Kidney transplant, 4) Hip replacement, 5) Knee replacement.
HERE AND THERE There could be a slight Cornwall connection with the new owners of the Ottawa Senators. According to one media report, Farm Boy is one of the key bidders. Farm Boy was started in Cornwall by the Belmare family back in early 1980s. It is now part of a national grocery chain.

Nick Wolochatiuk DANCES WITH WORDS
NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
If you are reading this week’s “DWW” on-line, as you bask in the balmy breeze coming off the Caribbean, you’re already doing your 2023 travels. However, if you’re taking a break from removing what the snow plow deposited at the end of the driveway, read on.
How does this sound for a getaway trip as soon as the tulips break free of their wintery prison? “Visit these five places this summer: Moscow – Odessa – Alexandria – Athens –Verona. Round trip transportation costs from the starting point of your choice: less than $200.00. all taxes included.”
Are you picturing Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin, Moskva River? Maybe a chance to see Russia’s President Vladolf Poutine as he furtively scurries from one staff meeting to another. If his army can still muster an operative tank that has not been sent on a shameful mission to a foreign country, you might witness some sort of parade.
Then, in your mind continue the tour I’ve outlined. Odessa, Ukraine’s seaport city on the Black Sea. At time of press, Odessa’s streets are dominated by Russian visitors, eagerly searching for refrigerators and washing machines to take home with them, but there are locals who are seeing to it that they will leave as soon as possible.
On to the next place on the itinerary you are picturing, Alexandria. It is the largest city on the Mediterranean. Despite being a place of industry and connected to the natural gas and oil pipelines from the Suez, it is quite popular with tourists.
FOREIGN PLACE NAMES – They’re Ontario place names too. To find an amazing list, just peruse the road map index. You can travel to places on the other side of the Atlantic without boarding a Boeing 747. (Photo
You need not be told that the next whistle stop on the tour offered is the largest city in Greece. It attracted over 306 million visitors in 2017. They came to see the Parthenon perched atop the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and to
Finally, northern Italy’s Verona. You could be among the 25,000 spectators watching the gladiator games in the Roman arena, or witness
You complain that inflation has crimped your discretionary vacation expectations. Even though you have just pictured all of these sights in your imagination and your tentative 2023 travel plan, let me let you in on a secret: if you drive, you could visit Moscow, Odessa, Alexandria, Athens and Verona in Eastern Ontario, all in one day. Despite the soaring cost of filling the gas tank of the family’s Honda, it’ll cost you much less than the other side of the Atlantic version of the tour.
Here’s how: take out your Ontario road map (1:700,000, one cm = seven km scale). Moscow is on cty. rd. 6, north of Kingston, Odessa is only 20 km south. Alexandria is on Ont. 34 and 43, about 220 km NE. Backtrack to Athens, 140 km. Finally, Verona, on cty. rd., 70 km away. Bob’s yer uncle! You do the sums to get the total driving distance.
It could be done in a one-day drive, but be sure to pack a lunch.

RRCA Board re-elects chair & new vice-chair
The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s (RRCA) Board of Directors re-elected Martin Lang as RRCA Chair and elected Bryan McGillis as the new Vice-Chair. Both were acclaimed to the positions. The elections were held during the Conservation Authority’s annual meeting held on January 19, 2023, at the RRCA office at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area.
A well-respected local farmer, Martin Lang has served on the RRCA Board for the last four years and was first elected Chair in
January 2022. He has also served his community of South Glengarry since being elected to the Township Council, first as a Councillor in 2018, and then as Deputy Mayor after last year’s municipal elections. Lang’s rapport with the local farming community is a strong asset to the RRCA, as the majority of the Conservation Authority’s jurisdiction consists of agricultural property.

Dancing the winter blues away ZwithC style!
KRYSTINE THERRIAULT ktherriault@seawaynews.media
A Blue Monday collaboration between Zumba with Christal and CMHA ChamplainEast had over 100 people hit the dancefloor for an energizing Zumba class on Monday, January 16, 2023.
Blue Monday is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year! Although this is a myth says CMHA’s Angele D’Alessio, what is real is the winter blues and SAD (Seasonal Affective disorder). The goal of the evening was to raise awareness of mental health, share resources from our local CMHA and encourage an activity that is well researched and backed by evidence: EXERCISE.
“The energy was electric in the room,” said Christal Bowen, “We had a great turn out and I am very proud to say that they have honoured me with the title of community mental health ambassador. It’s nice after sixteen years, knowing what we are doing helps people with their mental and physical health.”
Bowen was the first Canadian to get her Zumba license 16 years ago in Virginia Beach. She originally pursued it because she loved to dance; she never thought it would turn into a passion for others. Since then, Christal has created a wonderful community
filled with generous and dedicated people who share her vision of making the world a better place.
At Zumba Cornwall/Zumba Christal everyone is welcome, there are no wrong moves, and the only rules are to have fun and not stress. Going “the wrong way” is reframed as an “impromptu solo”!
“Mental health is so important because it affects everybody. Whether you know it or don’t know it, its unseen and its super important,” Bowen shared, “If you suffer in silence, you’re in your own thoughts and Zumba allows that to release, it allows it to go on to the dancefloor instead and you turn off the world for a while and you escape yourself.”
Christal noticed that looking forward to Zumba classes helped people regain the spark they had lost during Covid. During the pandemic, people lost consistency, but these classes never stopped. They just went online instead.
“I love it, its something I don’t feel I’m going to give up on anytime soon. You keep moving forward and keep coming up with new ways to make the community better. I always say that I’m not alone in this, I have a whole army of people backing me up to make big changes,” Bowen told Seaway News.

Jane in Bonville has now decided to say what else drives her to distraction. Upsellers!!!! These are people who job it seems to be is to do everything in their power to increase your cost. Especially places like garages. Last week I took my car in for a small job. This kid goes up to my car and starts rattling things around. Well, you better fix this, etc. I became livid and told him in no uncertain terms to step away from my car and do not even think of touching it ever again. He was shocked.... I got what I went in there for and left. Women should be especially careful and if the bill is more than you expect it to be, get a second opinion, or just leave..... Don’t forget most of these guys work on commission.
In December I went to Cornwall ER with a heart problem. Dr. Maharaj handled my case, took three tests explaining each one and their results. He was very professional and understanding. The people we need in Cornwall. Thank you, Dr. Maharaj, —Paul Newsome

Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.”

Partnership program will extend care beyond hospital walls
Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is partnering with Bayshore HealthCare Integrated Care Solutions to extend services beyond its hospital walls with the CCH@Home program.
The CCH@Home program will help frail older adults from our area transition safely out of hospital by providing up to 16 weeks of care in their homes delivered by an integrated Bayshore HealthCare team.
CCH staff will meet with eligible patients and families to discuss enrollment in the program, what to expect, and work with them in consultation with Bayshore staff to create a care plan identifying the specific services the individual may need at home, allowing for a seamless hospital discharge and home care experience.
The program’s goal is to help speed people’s recovery and relieve hospital capacity challenges, specifically by supporting seniors at risk of becoming Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients — those occupying an acute care hospital bed while not acutely ill — but still requiring additional support. The program, which is covered by OHIP and available at other hospitals
throughout Ontario, is set to begin accepting its first patient referrals from CCH this week.

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, but the work done by the Alzheimer’s Society of Cornwall and District is year-round. This year, the organization extended their $2 paper flower Forget Me Not fundraiser until March, so keep your eye out for them at local grocery stores! Last year’s fundraiser resulted in approximately $8,000 in donations to support local programs.
Seaway News had the pleasure of speaking with Josée Desrochers Leduc, Education Coordinator for our local Alzheimer’s Society, to get some information on Alzheimer’s and the role the society plays in our community. One of the first things she pointed out is that there are over 100 types of dementia; Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.
The most common sign of Alzheimer’s is day-to-day forgetfulness from short term memory impairment, but dementia is not all about memory loss. Alzheimer’s disease also affects a person’s reasoning, judgement, and ability to complete familiar tasks.
“You have that person that used to be very good in baking and then you taste one of their cakes and they used salt instead of sugar. You think, ‘What’s going on with mom? It’s not her.’ These are little signs that often start at the beginning, even before diagnosis, that’s why they’re called warning signs,” shared Desrochers Leduc.
their caregivers, along with day programs in the Prescott and Russell area. They also have caseworkers who support clients oneon-one, and an educational program called Minds in Motion that focuses on brain health.
“I have the privilege of working with a wonderful team that has the same vision of helping alleviate the impact of dementia in clients’ everyday lives,” said Desrochers Leduc, “I talk a lot about, there is a life after diagnosis. Working with the public, unfortunately people think if you are diagnosed on Monday by Tuesday night you’re done and that’s not it at all. People with the right support can live well with the disease a long time.”
“We definitely saw a big decline in our clients and their caregivers when we were confined with the Covid situation. We saw hands on the importance of having those people engage in programs and it was so sad to see that decline. I would say more than 90 percent of our clients declined quite a bit … they were robbed from the socialization that usually kept them going, engaged, and stimulated,” Desrochers Leduc said.
Because speech and comprehension are affected early in the disease, individuals with Alzheimer’s tend to become very good at understanding non-verbal language. Not being able to read people’s faces because of masks was another thing that impacted people with dementia during the pandemic.
Getting lost easily is also common occurrence with dementia patients.

“About 60 percent of people living with dementia will go missing during their disease. If they are not found within 24 hours, they’re found lifeless or in very bad shape. That is why it is so important for the community to understand that aspect of dementia,” Desrochers Leduc explained, “For that moment they are confused. They are looking for the house they grew up in but maybe that was in Montreal, and they are living in Cornwall.”
While many people think of Alzheimer’s disease as something that affects older populations, we now see more people diagnosed at a young age. A diagnosis before age 65 is considered early onset. Some are now diagnosed as young as 30 years of age.
The Alzheimer’s Society of Cornwall and District would like caregivers to know that it’s better to reach out for support earlier rather than later. A lot of people think that they’re alone in their journey but they’re not when they reach out for support. Connecting with a group of people who are going through the same thing can make a big difference.
“Knowledge is power and it has never been so true in my line of work. We need to work together as a community – we call that a dementia friendly community – where people learn about dementia and what they can do to help people that are living with it.”

“I would say about in Canada 18,000 people are diagnosed with early onset out of 500,000 diagnosed with dementia, meaning that they sought medical help. So, the numbers are high, and they are getting higher,” said Desrochers Leduc.

“Our office is open between 8:30 and 4:30 and I’m so happy when I see people coming in and wanting resources because they think that something is going on with their neighbour that lives alone, and they just want to know what they can do to help,” explained Desrochers Leduc, “It’s like our ‘aha’ moment when we see that. You don’t have to have a diagnosis to come into our office. We want to work with the community because we know how important the community is for our clients.”

He went away without farewell, He said goodbye to none. But heaven’s gate was open wide And a loving voice said “Come”. Beside his grave we often stand, Our hearts are tired and sore, But through the gloom; There comes the words; “not dead just gone before”. Gone are the days we used to share But in our hearts you are always there. Never more than a thought away Loved and remembered every day.
The City of Cornwall recently awarded a $10 million dollar contract to ASCO Construction Limited, of Hawkesbury, to complete Phase 1 of the social/affordable housing complex slated for Pitt St. North, immediately South of the 401 overpass on the West side.
The two companies who bid on the project were ASCO Construction Limited and Cornwall’s Grant-Marion Construction Limited. Ultimately the project was won by ASCO who were better able to meet the project’s specifications.
The complex will be a mixed rental community with a combination of rent geared to income units, median market, and near market units.
As far as when the project will break ground, it is still a little early to say. The city will meet
with the company soon to figure out details like when the work will begin.
“We are trying to aim for occupancy by late fall of 2023,” shared Lisa Smith, Manager of Housing Services for the City of Cornwall.
“We’re constructing the site to be ready for 81 two-bedroom stacked townhouses or 9 townhouse unit complexes. We’re going to build it in phases, so this contract was awarded for 27 units which is three buildings of nine units,” explained Smith.
The City of Cornwall has a commitment to building as many barrier-free units as possible as part of their complexes, so there will be three barrier-free units in each townhouse complex.
“Barrier-free units are great for folks who may need a mobility aid, a little more space because of issues with physical mobility, or supports to be able to age in place in their home,” Smith said.
OBITUARY
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Deschamps, on Thursday, January 2023, at the age of 75 years. Loving father of Diane Deschamps of Cornwall and proud grandfather of Lacey Walker. Ronald will be missed by his siblings, Colette Izzar (Mike), Denise Vaillancourt, Juliette Page, Jacques Deschamps and Marie Claire Deschamps (Normand Laflèche) also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, Boulerice Center 218 Montreal Road, Cornwall, ON (613) 938-3888. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2023 from 1 pm to 3 pm. As expressions of sympathy Memorial Donations to the The Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy https://www.ofcp.ca/ donate/ would be appreciated by the family. Condolences may be made online at www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca
Diane was the loving wife of the late Neil Farrell, devoted mother to Kirk (Kitty) and Todd (Tannis), proud grandmother to Kendra, Greydon, Hunter and Avery, and caring sister to Donald Tessier (Helene) and her late siblings Gisele, Pete and Paul.
Diane was born into a boisterous and loving French-Canadian family in Cornwall. She spoke fondly and frequently of a childhood full of love, songs and revelry. Diane spent the early part of her adult life working for the federal government, building a large circle of friends in Ottawa, on the slopes and après-ski. A blind date with a young dentist led to a lifetime of love and memories with her chou-chou, Neil. They settled in London, where Diane and Neil built a wonderful life, surrounded by friends. Diane spent many fulfilling years working at London Health Sciences Centre, including long tenures at University Hospital and the South St. campus.
She loved a game of bridge, euchre or dominoes, worshiped the sun and was at her best when hosting a dinner party. Her true legacy is the incredibly long list of people who knew her as a kind, generous and loving friend. From neighbours and co-workers to friends-of-friends, fellow parishioners and beyond, all were welcome in Diane’s circle.
Kirk and Todd extend their deepest gratitude to her community of friends for their love and support. We also appreciate the care and attention provided by the many nurses, doctors, PSWs and others who assisted our mother along the way.
A celebration of Diane’s life will take place in the spring.

HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
On her way back from an appointment in Ottawa over five years ago, CCH’s Dr. Celine Lemire sent me a message: “Amy, have you heard of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s (TOHF) Dancing with the Docs fundraiser? Could we do this in Cornwall?”
Dear readers, I had heard of TOHF’s incredible – and incredibly successful – fundraiser, based on TV’s hit series, Dancing with the Stars. To me, the chance to hold an event like this would mark an incredible opportunity for our Hospital Foundation; but I had to ask: “Celine, I love this idea, but do you think people will want to put themselves out there and dance?” With confidence and charm (as is her way), she replied, “Yes! We can do this, and I can help. When can we get started?”
It takes a village to build a fundraiser like Dancing with the CCH Stars. We started our research in 2018, and in 2019 we visited The Ottawa Hospital Foundation to learn about their program; we created relationships with local dance schools, Ecole de danse Powell School of Dance inc. (PSOD) and Studio C Dance School; we dreamed and developed an event to reflect our community values;
working with Dr. Lemire, we recruited dancers across CCH, and prepared to announce our new fundraiser in 2020.
We all know what happened next. To respect COVID protocols, our Hospital Foundation couldn’t hold any indoor fundraisers, so our hopes were dashed, and our event sat quiet for three years.
Luckily, good things can happen for those who wait. Since September, six incredible teams from across CCH have been putting on their dance shoes, training at PSOD and Studio C, and preparing to perform. Brought to our community by title sponsor Blake Hambleton, Senior Investment Advisor, RBC Dominion Securities, and a host of fantastic sponsors, our LIVE “Dancing with the CCH Stars” show will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Aultsville Theatre.
Our dancers will compete to win the Clinical Cup Trophy and $50,000 in medical equipment for a project of their choice supporting the needs of patients and healthcare workers at CCH. The team with the highest average of fundraising and dancing points will win our $50,000 medical equipment grand prize.
Introducing, our dance teams!
• Dr. Celine Lemire (Hospitalist program; Emergency Department) and Mr. Anthony Powell (PSOD)
• Dr. Akram Arab (ICU) and Meghan Cafferky (Momentum Physiotherapy)
• Andrew Bissonnette (RN, ICU) and Robin Barillaro (RN, ICU)
• Josee Amyot (RPN, Assault & Sexual Abuse Program; Emergency Department) and Rhiannon St. Pierre (Manager, Privacy at CCH)
• Dr. Renee Givari (ICU) and her husband, Tim Mazereeuw
• Joy Cella (Medical Staff Office), Amie McCosham (RN, OR), Kathleen Jack (RPN, OR) and Dr. Leslie Stephens (OR)
Please visit www.cornwallhospitalfoundation.ca to learn more about our dance teams, find out about the projects they’re dancing for, and pledge your favourite (or favourites!), supporting their fundraising journey to win the Clinical Cup and our grand prize of $50,000
in medical equipment! Fundraising and sponsorships will help us reach our $50,000 goal. Any net proceeds raised over this goal will help CCHF purchase more urgently needed equipment serving local patients at our hospital.
Tickets sales begin on Monday, February 6, and a link for tickets ($35 for the show; 75$ for post-show Dance Party; $100 for show and Dance Party combined) will be available on our CCHF website. Please keep your eyes on Seaway News – we’re grateful the paper will be sharing stories about our teams and helping us promote more information leading up to our event at Aultsville Theatre!

What
I do at CCH:
I work in CCH’s ICU, caring for the sickest patients admitted to our hospital. As a Respirologist, breathing issues are my specialty. Life support, medications, and machinery like ventilators are some of the interventions I use every day, so our patients have open airways to breathe through severe illness or injury. I also work with the hospital’s resuscitation group attending life threatening emergencies across the hospital, like heart attacks and stroke. Life on the unit is busy but helping patients and their families when times are tough makes the hard work
My family moved to Canada from Syria when I was five years old. I grew up in Ottawa and we struggled in our new life. My parents went through a lot of hardship to give us opportunities in Canada, and I was determined to help them support our family. In high school, I worked two to three jobs on top of my studies. Outside school, I learned a lot about people during shifts at Giant Tiger and
Back home in Syria, my mother’s family had a medical background, while my father’s family worked in engineering. Everyone wondered whose footsteps I would follow growing up in Canada, but when I had the opportunity to volunteer at a hospital, I fell in love with
I did my undergrad in Ottawa, went to Western University for medical school, then came back to Ottawa for my residency and fellowship in Respirology. I knew Dr. Paul Westergaard from med school, and he suggested I try some shifts in Cornwall’s ICU. To be honest, I fell in love with the people here. This community is special. We work with a great team, from my physician colleagues to our excellent nurses and everyone who works so hard on the frontlines and behind the
scenes to help support our patients. I’ve worked at other hospitals, and CCH is a very caring environment. After commuting the first two years, I decided to make the community my home. I’m proud to team up with CCHF, supporting my team, our patients, our community.
My project: I’m fundraising and dancing to win $50,000 in equipment upgrades for my team in the ICU.
Our project offers a combination of equipment to help us care for our patients on the unit, including:
• A new bedside cardiac monitor.
• A carbon dioxide module add-on to help us monitor our patients’ vital signs.
• A triple channel infusion pump to deliver fluids, nutrients, or medications to our patients.
Please consider pledging me in my efforts to support local healthcare. CCHF will provide an official charitable receipt for any donation over $20 that contributes to my fundraising.
