Book Corner This month’s favorite reads from Coronado Bay Books

Halloween is coming to town, and Hattie reminds us of our own local “Ghostess With The Mostess,” while you adults can enjoy the season with a Haunted Front Porch. Go beyond the Big Top with Kris Grant in Sarasota, and learn a bit about the Winn Room in the heart of Coronado. Take a visit on board the USS Midway with Admiral Terry Craft … and get to know Island Icon Leonard Kaine. The October issue of the Coronado Magazine is also our Fall/Winter Dining issue. From Beach-to-Bay, Coronado is home to a little something for everyone, and a sampling of that can be found within these pages. Whether you are fond of an old favorite (a Diner Burger & a Malt at Claytons?) - or out for something new (the Scallops at Jolie are remarkable!) - it can be found in Coronado. And the views with your dinner … from the Downtown Lights at Costa Azul … to the beach view at the Hotel Del … it’s a feast for your eyes, as much as your palette! Just as any restaurant freshens up its menu from time-to-time, so too does the Coronado Magazine. With a little help from a friend (Thank You Martina!) - this Magazine is undergoing a little bit of a facelift. Come along with us on this journey as we paint the walls and look for a place to put in a window with a view … and if you have a suggestion for something you’d like to see in these pages … you know where to find me! - Dean Eckenroth Jr. Editor & Associate Publisher

MY LIFE: HAT TIE FOOTE

The Ghostess With The Mostess

E

very morning before school, I have my kids go outside and check the weather for themselves so they can dress accordingly. “It’s sooooooo hot,” they will whine, or “I wish we could have snow days” on another typical, beautiful Coronado day. As Winifred Sanderson says, “Oh look, another glorious morning. Makes me sick!” But every so often, I get the announcement that brings joy to my fall-loving heart. “It’s Kate Morgan weather!” they shout from our cool, foggy patio. Our Coronado queen, icon, legend, and did I mention ghost? Most locals are familiar with the story of Kate Morgan, who checked into the Hotel del Coronado using the pseudonym “Lottie A. Bernard” in 1892. She died under mysterious circumstances, and legend has it she has never left! I don’t blame her; who would want to leave Coronado? I actually heard about Kate long before we lived here. When I was young and growing up in New Mexico, my dad had a conference in San Diego. His travel agent arranged everything and had put him up in the Del. When he traveled home, he told us he had a crazy experience at the hotel. He explained he was going to bed, and

he heard a faint knocking. He ignored it, thinking it was a noisy neighbor, but after a couple of minutes, the knocking got louder. He got up and opened his room door to find a group of ladies staring at him. They informed him he was staying in Kate Morgan’s hotel room and asked if they could come inside and check it out. The thought of my dad standing in the corner in his pajamas while all these women were looking around and taking pictures makes me laugh. Little did I know, that was not the last time I would hear

about our spirited girl! Halloween is huge in our house, we have so many fun traditions and lots of spooky fun. Unfortunately, I may have had a little too much spooky fun when my son was younger, and I told the story of Kate, which I believe low-key traumatized him. During the pandemic (talk about scary) the Del set up a fun, ghostly photo op that was outside in the courtyard. My best friend and I loaded up our kids, excited for any sort of normal activity, and walked over to the hotel. It was the perfect weather,

OCTOBER 2023 |

11

foggy, and the thrill of Halloween in the air. We spent the morning wandering the halls, and someone pointed us in the direction of her room. The kids nervously tip-toed across the hall and put their ears up to the door, which, in retrospect, was a little rude to the poor guest in the room. I stood behind them and rapped my knuckles on the wall beside the door, and boom. Two kids were laughing, one kid flew down the hall, and one kid (my poor son) was hysterically crying. I felt terrible and have already started saving for future therapy bills. Not long after, we were hanging out on the beach, and the marine layer rolled in. The beach was pretty quiet, aside from the occasional couple power-walking along the water. Out of nowhere, a figure appeared in the distance. As they got closer, I noticed they were dressed all in black, with what appeared to be a black umbrella. “That’s odd,” I mentioned to the kids, and joked that Kate came to say “Hi.” That was enough for my son, who immediately asked to go home. We packed up, and I turned around to look once more. To this day, I like to think it was her. I know she must just love Halloween in our little Hallmark town. The decorations at Garage Buona Forchetta, the City of Coronado’s Halloween Happenings festival at Spreckels, and the epic trick or treating on Orange and beyond. Hopefully she has a fun night, gets lots of Almond Joys and Reeces, and has a peaceful rest back at the historic Hotel del Coronado. Happy Haunting Coronado! ◆

CHEERS!

HAUNTED FRONT PORCH PUNCH By CHRISTINE JOHNSON Photo by HATTIE FOOTE

I

t’s that time of year again when we put away the beach chairs and umbrellas and break out the pumpkins. We’ve experienced an odd weather pattern with heat lingering, but we must push those last days of summer aside and prepare for the leaves to change and cool air to appear. Coronado takes on a different spirit in October. Local shop windows become showplaces of creativity, and coffee shops smell of pumpkin spice (does everyone really like that?). There’s just something magical about the fall season. Let’s not forget that October also ushers in the best and scariest day. Kids start to plan their costumes, parents decorate with the perfect skeletons and witches, and every generation seems to put together an elaborate plan to make their house stand out on the street. Halloween allows us to be something we are not. It is a night to dress as a character you love or simply decide you want to scare everyone with oozing blood and green slime. And let’s not forget the candy! I think Halloween was the only day of the year when my parents didn’t tell me to stay away from sugar, it was a free-for-all. Halloween has both Celtic and Christian influences. It began as a celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of

14

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

summer, with bonfires lit and people wearing costumes to ward off ghosts. In Christianity, it’s the evening before All Saints Day. Regardless of the history or the endless tales of how it became a night of tricks and treats, it is a night to come together and spend time with family, friends, and your community. Coronado has a way of doing all of that with the various festivities planned for all ages each year. My absolute favorite Halloween ritual is dressing up and sitting on my front porch passing out candy. No longer having a younger one in my house, I love to see what the kids have chosen as their costumes and how their parents join in the fun dressing up, too. Is there anything more fun than going house to house to see who gets the most candy? Or hearing the breaking news that there is a house on B that is giving out whole candy bars!? If you are planning a Halloween party or just sitting on your porch contributing to the community’s dental bills, I have an elixir that will go with your night. It’s a drink that is adult and kid-friendly and made even more fun by adding dry ice for effect. Here’s to the community of Coronado, the creative kids, and the fun adults who make this night special ◆

Place fresh blackberries in a large bowl — mash until fully broken. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl, pressing the pulp to release the juice. Discard solids. Pour blackberry juice into a large punch bowl. Stir in sweet tea, water, and lime juice until well combined. Gently stir in ginger beer, bourbon, and frozen blackberries. Serve over ice. Garnish with lime slices. October is for ghouls and goblins, so you can add dry ice to the punch bowl for an extra Halloween spook. Make this Kid-Friendly for Halloween by Leaving Out The Bourbon

Clayton’s Coffee Shop was first established as Gerry’s Coffee Shop in 1938. Gerry owned her diner until 1952 when Mr. Clayton took over. In 2008 I instantly fell in love with this special little diner when I took my 4 year old son in for a milkshake and fries after pre-school one day. Clayton’s Coffee Shop has the only original horseshoe counter left in San Diego County and is one of the few classic American Diners remaining across the United States. Clayton’s is a place of many life moments where the booths and the counter seats have sparked love stories and heartfelt family memories. We do our best to provide timeless hospitality with simple old fashioned comfort food to be enjoyed by all who visit every time you step back in time with us. We are very grateful for the Clayton’s work family, friends, family, military community, Coronado locals and visitors for keeping this historical little coffee shop going for almost a century. Looking forward to many more memories in the years to come. Love, Mary

Jolie Coronado

The dining scene in Coronado has a wide variety of styles and cuisines, but Jolie, at 126 Orange Avenue, is offering something new along with classic seated dining. Patrons have the option of enjoying fresh, seasonal prepared dishes or taking home a variety of meats, seafood, cheeses, and other specialty items from the butchery portion of the restaurant. The four owners—Christian Biafora (who also owns the building), head chef Jason Witzl, Molly Sirody, and Pedro Quintero—all have a long-time love of Coronado but recognized a local need for high-quality retail meats and seafood. When the space, which formerly housed Mexican Village, Spicy House, and a CBD shop, became available, they set the wheels in motion, and Jolie opened to the public on Friday, March 24. The menu, carefully created by Chef Witzl, showcases a variety of light, colorful choices with a focus on fresh seafood. I stopped in on a sunny Saturday afternoon and was impressed by the variety of both food and beverage selections. Diners can enjoy arancini, pork belly, Parkerhouse rolls with two types of butter, salads, cheese and charcuterie, several seafood options, and more. Biafora noted that the shrimp and melon salad—made with chilled shrimp, melon, and cucumber, is already a local favorite.

The salad won over my tastebuds with the first bite. Witzl’s skill with flavors and textures makes this one a clear winner. Each ingredient adds a depth of flavor while still allowing the fresh seafood to be the star of the show. The wine list is also carefully curated, with options for sparkling, whites, and reds. They’re available by the glass and can also be purchased by the bottle to take home. Other specialty items that are currently available are freshly baked and locally sourced bread, vinegar, and olive oil. While Jolie is still considered “new” relative to some of Coronado’s more longstanding establishments, the unique menu and fresh flavors have already made it a local favorite. In the coming weeks, patrons can also expect an exciting and surprising new twist to the beloved Jolie menu. But in the meantime, flip through our top picks from the current menu and consider Jolie for your next dinner date night.

WHAT’S IN SEASON?

Artichokes! WHILE THERE ARE COMPETING CLAIMS as to where the artichoke originated, historians believe they were cultivated in North Africa as early as 800 A.D. It is also believed that a group of Arab people can be thanked for introducing the flower-like vegetable to Italy, where it became known as articiocco and eventually “artichoke” in modern English. Nowadays, artichokes are still primarily grown in the Mediterranean. Due to California’s Mediterranean-like climate, nearly 100 percent of the U.S. crop is produced here. Artichokes are packed with fiber, magnesium, folate, potassium, and vitamins C and B6. Some benefits of consuming artichoke leaves include improved cholesterol, lowered blood sugar, regulated blood pressure, and improved liver and digestive health. According to multiple studies, artichoke is also thought to have anticancer effects. While some may be wary of cooking an artichoke for the first time, it is not as intimidating as it seems. Both the heart and the leaves can be prepared and eaten. The nutty, and slightly bitter vegetable can be boiled, grilled, steamed, baked, or sautéed. They can be stuffed, breaded, added to salads, blended into dips, placed atop pizza, or simply eaten on their own with complimentary spices or sauces. Artichokes have two peak seasons: one from March to June and the other from September to October. This means that at this very moment, you are in the midst of peak artichoke season. So, no matter how you choose to enjoy this earthy delight, incorporating artichokes is sure to bring joy to your dinner plate.

Beyond the Big Top: Uncovering Sarasota’s Cultural Riches and Family Roots

J

ust over a year ago, I attended the International Food, Wine and Travel Writers Association annual meeting in St. Petersburg, Florida. As part of this confab, we could apply for pre- and post-fam trips to other Florida cities. I chose Sarasota, a city I had first seen in 1983, when my mom and I visited her brother, my uncle Fay, and his wife, Rose. I’m proud to say that my uncle, whom I’m named after (see my expanded byline above), was one of the most famous trapeze artists of all time. He had a long and storied career with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. And like many in the Ringling Brothers circus family, Fay and Rose chose to make Sarasota their permanent home. It was an absolute joy to explore this city that includes a series of barrier islands, known as “keys,” and their beautiful white sand beaches bounded by the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Sarasota Bay on the other. It’s no wonder that nearly a century ago John Ringling chose Sarasota to be the winter home of his circus family, and that he and his wife, Mable, established an exquisite home and museum here. Today, Sarasota is rich in its diversity of cultural offerings, including visual, performing and culinary arts – all of which have built on the legacy of Ringling’s empire. So here’s my story on how Sarasota came to be known as Florida’s Cultural Coast, and how I came to discover more about my famous ancestor, my Uncle Fay Alexander.

The Venetian-styled Ca' D'Zan estate of circus empresario John Ringling and his wife Mable fronts Sarasota Bay. O C T O B E R 2 0 2 3 | 59

The entrance to the Circus Museum at The Ringling. Let’s go back a century in time and think about what the circus meant to America. In the 1920s, there was no television, no jet travel, no Internet, no “talkie” movies, no color film and very few books with photographs in color. When the circus came to town, often with an opening parade, it allowed people to see for the first time the wild animals of Africa – lions, tigers and elephants. Under the “Big Top,” kids of all ages were enthralled by high wire acts, dazzled by acrobats, and thoroughly entertained by the hilarious stunts and magic acts of clowns. John Ringling, born in McGregor, Iowa, was the fifth of seven brothers (and the last surviving brother). Five of the brothers established Ringling Bros. World’s Greatest Shows and in 1907 they purchased Barnum & Bailey Circus from the estate of James Anthony Bailey. They merged the two circuses in 1918. In 1929 John Ringling purchased the only other circus empire, including Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, thereby 60

creating a circus monopoly in the United States. It was Sarasota’s mild winter weather that originally drew John Ringling and his wife, Mable, here on vacations in 1911. They purchased land the year before that, and in 1926 moved into their newly built Mediterranean-revival estate Ca’ d’Zan, Venetian for “House of John.” The Ringlings were instrumental in developing Sarasota, purchasing 66,000 acres of land east of town, and more in Bird Key, St. Armands Key, Lido Key and Longboat Key. In 1927 John Ringling made Sarasota the winter home for the circus, setting the stage for Sarasota’s legacy of arts and cultural pursuits. The Ringlings traveled throughout Europe, not only to scout out artistic talent for the circus, but also to build a collection of art by Old Masters. Among the hundreds of Baroque-style paintings housed at their 21-gallery Ringling Museum are four Peter Paul Rubens masterpieces, plus pieces by Botticelli,

van Dyke, Velasquez, Gainsborough and the list goes on. By 1929, Ringling, who had also invested in railroads, oil and ranches, was one of the richest men in the world. But four years later, when stocks plummeted and his financial notes

came due, Ringling had lost most of his fortune, having just $311 in the bank. He was able to retain his home, museum and entire extensive art collection, which, upon his death in 1936, he willed to the State of Florida. The State added a Circus Museum to the estate in 1948, and in recent decades, galleries focusing on Asian art, contemporary art, and modern and contemporary glass art have opened at the Ringling. Another of Ringling’s legacies is the Ringling College of Art + Design, which asked to adopt his name because of the cultural influence of the museum and its collection. Over the decades of the 20th century, hundreds of creative artists who performed under the Big Top called Sarasota home. So, too, did artists who created elaborate costumes and props for the Greatest Show on Earth. Today, the entire Ringling estate is operated by the State of Florida. Now called “The Ringling,” it includes the Ca’ d’Zan mansion, Bayfront Gardens, including Mable’s rose garden, and the Secret Garden where John, Mable and John’s sister, Ida Ringling North, are buried, the McKay Visitors Pavilion, the Museum of Art, and the Circus Museum. Two weeks before my visit, I contacted The Ringling to see if they might have any records about my uncle and his trapeze act, The Flying Alexanders. They certainly did. In fact, a treasure trove of memorabilia had been donated just weeks before my visit and they were eager to share it with me. Jennifer Posey, Curator of Circus, met me on the museum floor and took me on a tour that included Howard Tibbal's life work – an exact 3/4-inch-to-thefoot scale replica of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as it might have looked from 1919 through 1938. Finally, she took me to an exhibit that housed my uncle’s trapeze bar and photos of him in action.

Trapeze artists soar in one of Howard Tibbal's miniaturized circus displays inside the Circus Museum.

Next we moved upstairs where Chief Archivist Heidi Connor joined us before three tables of materials that documented my uncle’s life. I was overwhelmed as I learned so much about this daring young man on the flying trapeze. There were his leotards, his ornate belts and his tiny trapeze slippers, which resembled ballet slippers. I never realized how small my uncle was, probably just 5 foot, 2 inches, like me. But while small, the guy was built. I mean, he was ripped, with muscular shoulders and six-pack abs! There was a lengthy letter from Burt Lancaster in 1956, saying he wished Fay well and looked forward to meeting up with him and Rose soon. They had made the movie Trapeze together in Paris the year before and Fay had taught Burt and Tony Curtis to fly. There were posters and still photographs from the movie, The Greatest Show on Earth, for which my uncle had done a lot of the stunt flying. It starred Jimmy Stewart, Cornel Wilde, Charleton Heston, Betty Hutton and Dorothy Lamour, and was directed by Cecil B. DeMille, and won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1952. There were his Shriner’s Fez hats. And photos of Fay with Ed Sullivan, when he was on the show, presenting his friend Emmett Kelly with a Performer of the Year award. There was a photo of the ceremony of Fay being inducted into the Circus Ring of Fame on St. Armands Circle. Tony Dow, who starred as Beaver’s older brother, Wally, on the Leave it to Beaver television show, was in the photo. Why was that? Bill Powell, executive director of the Circus Ring of Fame, explained that Tony was a friend of David Nelson, of the Ozzie and Harriett Nelson family. My uncle taught David to fly. Bill said, “Those TV guys all knew each other,” and he suspects that my uncle may have given Tony a trapeze lesson or two. It was Tony Dow and his wife Lauren who paid for my uncle’s bronze plaque and

induction ceremony. Bill also called Fay his uncle. His mother, Gee Gee Engesseer, was Rose’s best friend and the gals had met as trick riders on horses and elephants; Fay later taught Rose trapeze and she became one of the Flying Alexanders. I told Bill I had met his mother on my 1983 trip to Sarasota – Fay and Rose took me out to an elephant sanctuary for retired circus elephants; it was run by Gee Gee. After Fay retired, he continued to work for Ringling’s Circus World, where he trained other aerialists. He also had a clown act for a time, and when Circus Circus opened in Las Vegas, he was the opening trapeze act. After three hours perusing these archives, I was an emotional wreck. I

had flown back in time, to my childhood, seeing my uncle perform, once under a Big Top tent, another at the Hollywood Bowl. He and Rose would wave directly to us in our ringside seats from their perch on high and then soar and twirl through the air. I remember when they’d visit us in their big travel truck, filled with gear and their German Sheppards, Max and Penny – how is it I remember these dog’s names some 60 years later? And now I know why he gave me that sweet doll from France – he bought it when he was over there making Trapeze. With a continent dividing them, I don’t believe my mom and her brother saw each other after our trip in 1983, a trip made to cheer me up after two cancer operations when I was just 31. But

these two, who once supported their family by performing as the world’s tiniest acrobats on the vaudeville stage, kept in touch by telephone. Uncle Fay died in 2000; my mom in 2006. And now, here I was, delving into his life’s story, walking the streets where he lived, and wishing I had known this really nice man better. Hence, the tears came. The good news is that this year the Ringling Bros. circus, now operated by Feld Entertainment, is back after a seven-year hiatus. It opened Sept. 29 in Louisiana, then moves to the upper Midwest and the East Coast. But it will come to California next year. I may just have to go!

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

It’s hard to know exactly where to start in describing Sarasota’s vibrant arts scene, so I suppose I should start with my hotel, aptly called Art Ovation, an Autograph Collection hotel. This boutique property is located in Sarasota’s Arts District; the Sarasota Opera House is two blocks away, and the Florida Studio Theatre (one of five intimate FSTs in the city) is across the street, offering improv on Saturday nights. Trendy boutiques, cheese shops and upscale restaurants abound in the area and Main Street is within a short walk. The lobby is a gallery offering rotating art exhibitions and original art is found in each guestroom. My guestroom also challenged me to bring out my inner artist, with a sketchbook and coloring pencils and even a ukulele. Alas, I refrained, preferring to spend a late night in the lobby gallery, enjoying a nightcap while listening to all my favorite rock classics performed live by a pianist possessing a beautiful voice. For more energetic music, the Perspective Rooftop Pool Bar features a curated music soundscape to accompany a Mojito and the panoramic views of Sarasota Bay. As I mentioned, the Sarasota Opera House was nearby our hotel, and I put in a call to an old friend, Stephen Baker, who used to live in Coronado and was a former marketing director at the San Diego Symphony. An accomplished pianist, Steve also worked for Steinway Pianos for a spell, but for the past five years he’s been the marketing director for one of the finest operas in the south, the Sarasota Opera. He kindly gave us a tour, including the back of the house, showing us a portion of the opera’s extensive costume collection of

Stephen Baker, marketing director of the Sarasota Opera, gave us a tour of the historic opera house. 50,000 items from more than 135 opera productions. It’s one of the largest costume collections in North America, which are regularly rented out to other production and film companies. The opera hosts a fall season and a fiveopera winter season; this February it kicks off with Georges Bizet’s Carmen. The Opera House itself is quite historic. Built in 1926 in a Mediterranean Revival style, it hosted performer Will Rogers and the Ziegfeld Follies in its earlier years. The opera house was renovated in 2008, all seats replaced, public spaces and original décor elements brought back to their former glory, and its orchestra pit doubled in size. Art Ovation is also just across the John Ringling Causeway Bridge to St. Armands Key, and St. Armands Circle, which was the vision of John Ringling who purchased the key in 1917. He designed a luxury development of residences and upscale shopping that would radiate from a Central Park roundabout. Never did he guess that the roundabout would one day become the Circus Ring of Fame, showcasing

stories of legendary circus performers. Ringling’s crews dredged canals, built seawalls and installed sidewalks and streets lined with rose-colored curbs. Ringling also donated 30 Italian statues from his personal collection that still adorn the streetscape today. When he built a causeway in 1925 to join the key with the mainland, Ringling used circus elephants to haul huge timbers. Today, St. Armands Circle features 100 boutiques, 30 restaurants and confectionaries, making it a perfect setting to shop, eat and then relax at one of nearly a dozen day spas and salons. Note to self: Yes! On my next visit. Our group enjoyed a wonderful lunch on the Circle at Crab & Fin restaurant, which has been a fixture there since 1978. We shared oysters on the half shell, but we also went mainland. I had an organic chicken salad croissant and one of my travel buddies opted for a southwest steak wrap. But Crab & Fin is also on my list for a return visit, next time for dinner. That Caribbean yellow fin tuna looks awfully good!

Sculpture abounds in Sarasota; this one, "Best Friends," sits outside the Selby Library, the first and now largest public library in Sarasota County.

The opera house was renovated in 2008, all seats replaced, public spaces and original décor elements brought back to their former glory, and its orchestra pit doubled in size.

Seafood, Rum, Beer and Ice Cream. It was a good day. On another day of our tour, our group met up in the heart of Sarasota, on Main Street, for lunch at Duval’s: Fresh. Local. Seafood. (Yes, that’s the official name, with all those periods.) The restaurant received Sarasota Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Seafood Restaurant, Best AllAround Restaurant, Best Sandwich (for its famous Po’ Boy), Best Lunch, and Best Takeout. I ordered the classic fish and chips and found them light, flavorful and crunchy. As we left the restaurant, I glanced at the building across the street that still bears the Kress insignia on its crest. Built in 1932 in Art Deco sign, the S. H. Kress retail store was a fixture here, as it was in many eastern and Midwest towns I’ve visited. I then remembered that my uncle told me that during the making of The Greatest Show on Earth in 1951, director DeMille arranged for the filming of a circus parade – it went right down Main Street, past the Kress building. And guess where the world premiere was held? The Sarasota Opera House! Charleton Heston and Dorothy Lamour were in attendance and I’ll bet my uncle Fay was there, too! Our next stop was Siesta Key Rum Distillery. Founded in 2007, the distillery offers free tours and better yet, free rum sampling. I tasted the spiced rum, coffee rum, silver rum (a good choice for a base of most cocktails) and my favorite, which is also the fan favorite, toasted coconut rum. It’s best enjoyed over the rocks or with a splash of pineapple. All the rums were tasty, not surprising when you learn that the rum is infused with real food ingredients, such as real Columbian coffee, not flavorings. You can find Siesta Rum at Total Wine in San Diego.

Our travel writers group enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Element on Sarasota’s Main Street.

Duval's on Main Street offers fresh, local seafood and is a consistent favorite of Sarasotans in annual readers' polls.

Siesta Key Rum. At Element: Steak. Seafood. Pasta. (a sister property of Duval’s hence those periods in the name) we enjoyed charcuterie, oysters on the half shell, and a tasty marinated watermelon salad. My entrée, an oh-so-tender short rib, was served over braised onions and homemade linguini. All their pastas are made in-house, which is apparent when you bite in. This was a great evening – Element has a wonderful, elegant ambience and friendly, attentive and not obtrusive wait staff. After dinner, we walked through the downtown, taking in the brightly lit sculptures and stopped in at 99 Bottles. This taproom and bottle shop opened in 2019 and was recently named by Wine

Beaver Shriver and his pooch, Neko Doodle Dog. Enthusiast as one of the best taprooms in the country. Thirty-four craft beers are always on tap and there is a wide selection of bottles and cans on the shelves. It was bingo night here and a handful of neighborhood regulars were having a great time. A perfect end to the evening was a visit to Rise & Nye's (now called RiseUp Café) where some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted was scooped up for me by a friendly staff, all of whom are developmentally disabled. The watchwords for this shop: Inclusion. Jobs. Dignity. I was pleased to meet co-owner Beaver Shriver (he’s Maria’s cousin), principal of the Shriver Group, and Neko Doodle Dog (support staff).

Oh those white sand beaches! Our travel writer group went over to Lido Beach for a tour of the new Drift Restaurant & Bar, where the view from this eighth-floor eatery showcases why vacationers head to Sarasota. Then we jaunted over to Longboat Key Resort, where we enjoyed cocktails on the beach and I finally got a chance to drop my toes into the warm (and sparkling clean) waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium The Mote is one of the country’s leading marine research facilities. Now, I know that San Diegans probably aren’t going to rush to Sarasota to view a marine aquarium; after all we’ve got SeaWorld and the Scripps Aquarium. But I must say I was glad our tour included to the Mote Aquarium, and I encourage you to visit! Mote first opened in 1955 (nine years before SeaWorld) in Placida, Florida, as the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory. It moved to City Island, Sarasota and was renamed after William R. Mote, a major benefactor. Today Mote conducts research on seven continents. You won’t find any thrill rides at Mote, but you will find exhibits and research projects focused on understanding the population dynamics of manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems. 68

The Sarasota Art Museum/ Ringling College of Art + Design In 2003 a group of Sarasotans got together to ponder how they could enrich their city’s cultural landscape with a contemporary art museum. After dialoging with community, education and arts leaders, the Sarasota Art Museum was born, as a partner with Ringling College of Art + Design. And where to build it? How about repurposing the former Sarasota High School, which had stood vacant for years? I love the fact that the stately, brick Collegiate Neo-Gothic high school, circa 1926, didn’t succumb to the wrecking ball, but instead was adaptively repurposed to be an art museum, complete with 20-foot high walls. It was funded with $30 million in private funding. Well done, Sarasota! Today, the museum has 15,000 square feet of dedicated exhibition gallery space, a Bistro, Shop, auditorium for educational events, performance and film, a sculpture courtyard and extensive grounds and facilities. The museum is known as a “Kunsthalle,” a German word meaning an art museum without a permanent collection. Instead, the museum hosts traveling exhibits that display for approximately four months each. So, if you’ve visited the museum once, you should visit again, and again! You’ll always see something new!

Ophelia’s on the Bay On our last night we gathered at Ophelia’s on the Bay, another Sarasota Magazine Reader’s Choice favorite for Most Romantic and Best View restaurant. Located on Siesta Key, the restaurant features bayside seating overlooking Little Sarasota Bay and preserved mangrove islands, but you can also take in the scenery if you sit inside and gaze out the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Service is attentive here, and the food, well, it’s divine. Menus are printed fresh each day to keep pace with the freshest ingredients. I started with Bluefish Tuna Tartare “Nachos” and Eggplant Crepes. My entrée was seared New Bedford Scallops, each served with a dollop of caviar. For dessert, we passed around the Reverse Black Forest Cheesecake and Key Lime Pie. Anyway, you get the picture… Ophelia’s is quite special!

The Winn Room

"If your acons create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader." - Dolly Parton

T

he Winn Room Project is going to come before the City Council in the next few months, specifically what, if any improvements should be made to this important community gathering venue will be discussed and decided. But what is the history of the Winn Room and who was Jane Winn? To understand the evolution of the library and the significance of the Winn Room it is best to start at the beginning. Founded in 1890, the Coronado Public Library was built on land donated by John D. Spreckels and designed by his personal architect Harrison Albright at a cost of $10,000. Built in the classical revival style the library was built on the West Plaza Park and officially opened in 1909. By the late 1920’s the library was overcrowded, so the Library Trustees sought the services of Southern California architect, Richard Requa to draw expansion plans. But it was 1929 and the country was in financial shambles and the bond

74

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

measure for the project failed. However, in 1935 two wings were added on either wide of the original Spreckels structure. Coronado continued to grow and so too did the library. In 1957 the floor space was doubled with additional space for books, seating, and staff. Four years later the Children’s wing was built. The children population was booming and special programs for youth included summer reading clubs, after-school programs for students and regular story hours. 1969 brought the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and Coronado prepared for the future with a General Plan entitled “Coronado 1990.” In reference to the library, it noted, “Although the existing library is centrally located, it is not adequate to serve the population.” The Library Board and the newly formed Friends of the Coronado Public Library (1970) lobbied the City Council for support for an expansion. The city

ultimately hired Homer Delawie AIA to develop plans that preserved the original Spreckels building but essentially demolished everything else and built 23,000 square feet of new space. During construction the library relocated to the High School Library.

The new 70’s version of the Coronado Public Library opened on June 16, 1974, as the cultural center the city had asked for. In April 1979 the Coronado Library Board of Trustees recognized Jane and Walter Winn for their many contributions on behalf of the city’s library and a plaque was unveiled dedicating the library assembly room as the” Winn Assembly Room.” A bronze plaque was presented to the library dedicating the room and forever identifying it with Jane and Walter Winn. It is of note that Jane and Walter Winn participated in the formation of the Library Friends support organization but it was Jane Winn who was a prime mover in the development of the new library building program and she witnessed the hard-won yet successful completion of the new library project. Appointed to the library board, Jane served two terms as a trustee from 1973 to 1979 and two years as library

board president during her tenure. She became involved early in the formation of the Statewide California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners (CALTAC) a chapter of the California Library Association. Walter Winn was a strong force behind the success of the Library Friends and a vital part of the Coronado library family. He worked behind the scenes to ensure the continuing success of the Friends. Under his leadership, the Friends presented to the library major gifts and supported the concept of library Summer Activities Programs. In March 1996 Jane Winn was named the first and only library trustee emerita at a meeting of the Coronado Public Library Board of Trustees and the Coronado City Council. She was honored for her many years of advancing the standing of the library. Winn was a leading advocate for the expansion of the library in the early 1970’s and again, in 1996 she was a member of the Coronado Public Library Expansion Planning Committee, tasked with yet another expansion effort to house the collection of items that had doubled in size and library usage that had tripled in just over two decades.

OCTOBER 2023 |

77

Jane Winn passed away in September 1996 before she was able to see the second major expansion during her lifetime become a reality. However, by 2003 the M.W. Steele Group from La Jolla had developed schematic plans that were adopted restoring the original 1909 Spreckels building and creating a new entrance. The work also retained the Delawie 1974 additions minus the corridors and built an addition to the rear of the existing building. The library remained open during construction for two and a half years closing only briefly to install the Alfredo Ramos Martinez “El Dia del Mercado” mural at the new library lobby. Completed in 2005 the library today is essentially the vision of Jane Winn’s in the 90’s. And that brings us to today and discussions regarding the Winn Room project. The library’s role and purpose continue to evolve but there is no doubt that the Coronado Public Library is the cultural center of our community. Coronado continues to grow and change and nearly 20 years have passed since the last renovation. The Winn Room continues to be the only sizable free room available for public events in the center of town. Libraries have never been a place solely reserved for checking out books:

78

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

they’ve always served as information analysts, technology evolutionists, and centers of learning. Where once libraries reduced isolation and broadened knowledge through books and recordings, which are now available easily on-line, they are evolving to broaden knowledge through live events to maintain a connection between words and people. This interaction strengthens communities. Since the last renovation the Coronado Public Library has continued to foster a highly successful line up of cultural programing including concerts, lectures, author talks, and film. The Winn Room, is agreed by all to be out of date and lacking essential features for the growing offering of programs. There have been studies underway for over three years on the best course for upgrades. Many events hosted by the library which have a local resident attendance have sold out and patrons have been turned away. This is happening more and more regularly. Other events have moved to larger venues (which can only happen when other high used venues such as the Coronado High School main stage theater are available) and have sold out. Still other events have moved to the library lawn

to accommodate larger crowds; however, this space is not ideal due to road noise, blocked sight lines and uneven or damp surfaces and is available only during warmer months. The attendance of these events demonstrates that a space accommodating 200+ people would be well utilized. In addition to arts events, there is also a need for meeting spaces for local organizations and other nonprofits that connect us as a community. There is clearly a city-wide gap in venues that can support 200+ people, as this size audience is too large for the Winn Room or the Grand Room in the John D. Spreckels Center and too small for the CHS Mainstage if available. The schools also have a gap in this size range. The Nautilus Room does have

80

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

this seating capacity and is excellent for receptions but is not suitable for many events due to poor acoustics and lighting. Jane and Walter Winn played a pivotal role in not only maintaining but elevating the role and purpose of the library but if there is anything to learn from the history of the Winn Room is that Jane Winn never stopped envisioning what was needed next. You are encouraged to participate in upcoming reviews of the Winn Room project and think about the future of this important Coronado institution. For more information visit: Coronado.ca.us. to monitor when the Council is scheduled to discuss this important project.

Admiral Terry Kraft: Securing His Dream Job By LINDA L. AUSTIN

T

he new president and CEO of the USS Midway Museum, Rear Admiral Terry Kraft, is not a stranger to Coronado. As the Navy son of pilot Captain Roy Kraft, he attended middle school here and remembers the carefree times riding his bike all over the island and the strand. Being on the pier watching his dad return from cruise on the USS Bonne Homme Richard and selling the popular Vietnam POW bracelets pop up as other memorable childhood moments. “There was just no better place to be a kid than Coronado.” When he became skipper of the USS Ronald Reagan based at NAS North Island, his two children experienced for three years the idyllic setting he had described to them. Erin and Brian attended Coronado Middle School, and then Erin finished her freshman year at Coronado High School. Both children are now in Denver, where Erin works in environmental planning with wind turbines and Brian is an aerospace engineer. Kraft maintains ties to Coronado. “We still have a lot of friends in Coronado, and we sail with Mike and Mel Whittemore out of Coronado Yacht Club. He's got a racing boat, so we get down to Coronado a lot.” Kraft always wanted to join the Navy even though he acknowledged that the family separations were difficult. With his dad absent for extended periods during the Vietnam War, he would forget what he looked like, but his pride in his dad and the close relationship they had when they were together more than filled in the gap.

82

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

M I L I TA RY S P O T L I G H T

“When I was in second grade, we lived in Lemoore, CA. My dad told me if I ever graduated from the Naval Academy, he would buy me a new car, so I thought that sounded pretty good. I started thinking about it at that time, and really, it's something I'd always wanted to do since then. The back story is my junior year, I called him, and he said, ‘Well, when I made that promise, a new car cost about two grand, so I'll give you two grand towards your car.’ I never let him off the hook for that.” His dad was his hero, and “I wanted my service to emulate all that he gave me and our country.” With his dad pinning on his wings, he was designated a naval flight officer in 1982 and started his distinguished career with command positions at aviation squadron, ship and carrier strike group, shore facility levels, and a staff position with the Chief of Naval Operations. Kraft’s notable service includes over 3,700 flight hours and 1,000 carrier-arrested landings in the A-6E, EA-6B and F/A-18F aircraft. He participated in Operations El Dorado Canyon, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Recalling Desert Storm and flying 40 late-night strikes in Iraq off the Midway with his VA 115 A-6 squadron, then returning to see the Midway as the sun rose, he said, “It meant we survived another night over the beach.” “You know, you hear the term Midway Magic, and it's got a lot of facets to it, but probably the biggest one was the air wing was very close because, unlike air wings here in the United States, we all lived next to each other, nextdoor neighbors in Japan, and we were

co-located with our ship, so we knew everybody on Midway. That unique ship airwing relationship was like nothing else I'd ever seen before…We didn't lose any aircraft in there, one of the few areas that didn't lose anybody, and I attribute it to Midway Magic.” Before receiving orders to Japan, Kraft met his wife Mary, a Navy nurse stationed at Long Beach at Tailhook 87. Seeing a table full of nurses in the coffee shop, “My buddy and I just walked up to them to introduce ourselves. And that’s how we met. At the end of the week, I asked for her phone number, and she gave me her address and said, ‘You can write me a letter, and then I’ll decide if I want to get to know you’ because I was stationed in Widby Island, and she was stationed in LB. She said, ‘This sounds pretty long distance. I don’t know if this is going to work out or not.’ But you know how naval aviators are. We’re pretty persistent if there’s something

we’re interested in. I knew as soon as I met her.” They were married in April 1989 and immediately had orders to Japan. She worked at the hospital in Yokosuka while he was on Midway. One difficult part for the new bride was the continual war coverage on television wherever she went, making it impossible to get away from combat news. Even the Officers’ Club had CNN news coverage targeting the war with footage showing pilots regularly being shot down. Asked about his most challenging time, Kraft said, “I think the biggest challenge is probably when I was the Enterprise Strike Group Commander; it was 2000. Used to call them battle groups. I was the one star in charge of the Enterprise strike group.… This was the heyday of the Somali pirates, so we're flying over Afghanistan every day and every night, but at the same time, all of our other ships were battling

O C T O B E R 2 0 2 3 | 83

these pirates, and sometimes we'd win, sometimes we'd lose. People died, so that was definitely one of the most challenging times that I faced as leader.” Being in command of the USS Ronald Reagan and stationed in Coronado was a highlight. “It was a new carrier. I got to take the ship on her first two deployments, and as we were preparing for deployment, I realized that over 60% of our sailors had never been on the six-month deployment before. So not only did we have to make the ship operational and ready to go, we had to prepare the mindset of the crew for what I called a nine-inning game, not just coming in for one or two innings which is much different… I loved that crew and every minute of my command tour there.” After retirement in 2015, he went to work at General Atomics for eight years. While he enjoyed that job, “I kept an eye on Mac (the previous CEO) and I kept an eye on the Midway because I did have a connection from having served on Midway, but I just really believe in the mission here. You know to be America's living symbol of freedom, to support and honor service and sacrifice of so many veterans, and to work with all these amazing volunteers. To me this has always been my idea of a dream job, and so when it became available and 84

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

Mac finally decided to retire, I was the first in line.” Kraft describes Midway as his happy place. When he sees it, “I mean I just feel happy. I feel relaxed getting to walk on board an aircraft carrier after you've served on aircraft carriers your whole career, and getting to tell people about living, working on an aircraft carrier, the people that make an aircraft carrier go. There's just no better job.” Recognizing that the volunteers are the backbone of Midway, he lists three important things that the ship offers retirees as well as the younger volunteers: mobility, socialization, and purpose. “Three big things as you get older are mobility, and they certainly have mobility here. They’re climbing all over the place all day. Socialization, they definitely got that part down, and a sense of purpose. They really believe in the mission of this ship and what they do. They love the guests. They are the attraction here, so I feel like we're not just making their lives better, we're prolonging their lives. “We were just designated as The Best of the Best by Trip Advisor, which means we have a five-star rating on the top 1% of all attractions, with the number one TripAdvisor attraction in San Diego, number four museum of all museums in the United States, and that's pretty amazing.”

Kraft was eager to talk about Freedom Park with a projected grand opening in Fall 2027. Two decades ago, USS Midway and the Port of San Diego committed to build a park. The time has come to honor that commitment with the purpose “Create an iconic waterfront landmark that will serve and inspire the San Diego community for generations to come.” He mentioned the tribute to the importance and resiliency of the military families at the end of Freedom Park. “We have a statue there, military families waving goodbye.” In recognizing the role his wife played in taking charge and keeping life normal for the children during the separation, Kraft acknowledged the job spouses and children have in supporting the military member. Commenting on always looking for more volunteers to man the numerous stations on Midway and the fact that 2/3 of retired military leave the state, Kraft mentioned his hopes that AB46 will pass in California. Assemblyman James Ramos introduced Assembly Bill 46 in the 2023 California legislature to exempt military retirees and surviving spouses from California income tax on military retirement pay. California is one of the few states that fails to provide any form of tax relief despite having the largest number of assigned active-duty military members in this state and ranking fourth in the U.S. in the number of military retirees.” Midway may be an important part of Kraft’s life, but he enjoys other aspects of his life besides family and sailing. He is a board member of The Distinguished Flying Cross Society, races in triathlons and rides bikes with the MOB (Midway on Bikes), attends plays with Mary all around the county as well as sporting events. His enthusiasm for and pride in Midway coupled with his contentment in San Diego life with his family and friends assure mobility, socialization, and purpose for him as well as the Midway volunteers. ◆

ISLAND ICON

Island Icon Leonard Kaine: The Real Top Gun Shares the Greatest Reward in Life By ZORAIDA PAYNE, Public Historian & Coronado Historical Association Volunteer Photos courtesy of Gary Payne.

H

istory tells us that the most accomplished among us are also the most humble. This past July, I had the chance to interview a very kind man, Captain Leonard Kaine. After opening the door of his home in Coronado, Captain Kaine, with his lovely wife of sixty-four years, Anne, shared with me a fountain of wise life lessons and courageous experiences. In his own casual words, "fun stuff." Len Kaine was a coal miner's son and shared how, in 1954, two days after he finished high school in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, he was on his way to the Navy. When saying his goodbyes, his mom gifted this young 18-year-old with a maxim that cemented his life, “Lenny, remember this: wherever you go, whoever you meet, whatever you do, Be Kind.” Remembering this foundational principle with an intense and tender gaze, Len meditatively stated: “Those two words are in my heart, my mind, and my soul.” After taking the Navy entrance exams, where he scored exceptionally well, he was offered to take the tests to qualify for Navy Flight Training. Again, he did above average and was soon transferred to pursue a series of adventures in Navy flight training at NAS Pensacola (also known as the Cradle 86

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

of Naval Aviation). Len excelled in his courses, graduated as a teenage Ensign, and diligently continued up the ladder. As a Fighter Pilot, Kaine was flying the first airplanes for the Navy that flew more than 1,000 miles an hour, the F8 Crusaders. While working as a Navy Fighter Tactics instructor, Captain Kaine set a Navy record. He flew six different types of aircraft in Air Combat Maneuvering in two days. A record that still stands nationwide and worldwide! Seriously and proudly recalling that record, Kaine shared the words that crossed his mind at that time: “Ok, I am number 1; I fly the fastest airplane. The F8 Crusader is a marvelous airplane.” Continuing his myriad of accomplishments, he was selected to instruct French pilots, not only for his stellar knowledge but also for his French conversational skills. So, it was not surprising that when the Chief of Naval Operations in France said he wanted Len Kaine to come to France to instruct French pilots, the American commanders already had other special plans for Kaine. He was selected to be the navigator for the world's largest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and two other adjoining nuclear-powered ships that circumnavigated the globe, unreplenished. During that trip, Kaine narrated the Navy's Fire-Power demonstrations to the leaders of 32 countries

in French, Spanish, and English. During his 103 combat missions over 132 days in combat in the Vietnam War in 1966, Kaine was part of VF-92, which used what he called his "3-D" Fighter Tactics and in doing so, became the first Navy Fighter Squadron not to lose a single airplane in combat. His squadron implemented the technique, which consisted of a tight formation of fighter jets flying in weave patterns, making it difficult for attackers to target a single aircraft. Recalling and gesturing the movements of the fighter planes, Kaine expressed seriously and calmly, “This touches your heartstrings again... knowing you saved lives.” After serving the nation as a fighter pilot, he continued as an airline captain at Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) and US Airways from 1972 to 1996. Although he flew over Vietnam, the scariest moment in his life was when he found out that the PSA flight he was scheduled to be commanding had a mid-air collision near downtown San Diego. On September 25, 1978, a small airplane flew into the PSA aircraft; 144 people were killed on the air and ground. Giving his spot to another pilot with a conflict in his schedule saved his life. Thoughtfully, Kaine attested, “That touches the heartstrings when I think what If I had said no, I want to fly that flight… the good Lord was looking after me.”

In 1972, Kaine accomplished another hallmark in his life. He founded the Golden Rule Society, a charity. The Golden Rule Society is a philanthropic organization that supports different charities and organizations around the world. The society has a particular focus on children and also the medical field. The society encompasses his philosophy: "To better the lives of others, is your greatest reward. Which makes the rest of your life the best of your life.” For 51+ years and counting,

Len and his right-hand, proofreader, and co-founder wife have been adamant about making connections to better the lives of others. That first motherly piece of advice, “Be Kind,” ignited a journey that continues to guide the path of this relentless pilot, inspirational leader, and family man. With pride and sincerity, Kaine expressed, “I am living that to this very day. I tell people to help others.” He touched his chest with both hands together in a fist and added, “That is true. To help others, it just makes you feel good, because you know you are here doing something for others.” That is why he is the speaker of the weekly one-hour show “HOPE Collection” every Friday, reaching out to as many as 73 countries. Consequently, It is not surprising that Captain Kaine was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times, and he was the runner-up in 2014. After having the honor of interviewing this exemplary and humble man, I asked him teasingly

when his book would be out. Hopefully, in the near future, his inspirational writing will invite us to reflect on what is the best advice that guides our lives and makes the rest of our lives the best life. ◆

Start Moving Toward Retirement Security I

t’s not as well-known as Halloween, but National Retirement Security Week happens every October – the third week, to be precise — and while it doesn’t involve ghosts and goblins, it does deal with something even more frightening: the risk of not being able to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Through various events, this occasion highlights ideas about building retirement security. What steps can you take? Here are some suggestions: • Don’t underestimate your longevity. Consider this: 65-year-old men can expect to live another 20 years, while 65-year-old women can anticipate almost 22 more years, according to the Society of Actuaries. And these figures are just averages, meaning you could well exceed these ages, perhaps by many years. So, in thinking about how much money you’ll need as a retiree, be aware that you could spend two or even three decades in retirement.

90

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

• Don’t underestimate health care costs. When you retire, some of your expenses — such as transportation, wardrobe, and other costs associated with your career — will drop. Others will not and may even increase. Health care is a prime example: Many people assume that Medicare or their Medicare Advantage plan will take care of virtually all their healthcare costs in retirement, but that’s not the case. Generally speaking, you could plan on spending $4,500 to $6,500 per year on healthcare costs

during retirement, excluding the large expenses connected with longterm care. Your actual costs could be higher or lower, depending on your health, prescription drugs, and supplemental insurance coverage, but make sure you plan for sizable healthcare costs in your projected retirement budget.

• Contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement plans. Try to put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan and try to increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also be eligible to contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA, which offers tax benefits and a wide variety of investment options. (Contributions to a Roth IRA may be limited based on your income.) Once you reach retirement, you can still make some moves that could help boost your financial security:

• Maintain an appropriate investment mix. When you retire, you might be tempted to shift most of your portfolio into highly conservative investments to “lock in” gains and avoid being over-exposed to market volatility that could cause shortterm losses. Yet, even in retirement, you should still own some growthoriented investments that can potentially help keep you ahead of inflation. In fact, it’s important to periodically re-balance your investments back to your preferred mix to avoid taking too much or too little risk, so you may want to consult with a financial advisor.

• Identify a suitable withdrawal rate. You don’t want to take out so much from your portfolio each year that you run the risk of outliving your money. So, you’ll want to determine an annual withdrawal rate that can reduce this danger. A common withdrawal rate to start retirement is 4%, but your own rate should be based on several factors: your age, size of portfolio, other sources of income, and so on. It can be challenging to make all the moves necessary to help achieve retirement security — but it’s worth the effort.

Atomic Habits By James Clear

By TJ Klune

No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving - every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.

In a strange little home built into the branches of a grove of trees, live three robots—fatherly inventor android Giovanni Lawson, a pleasantly sadistic nurse machine, and a small vacuum desperate for love and attention. Victor Lawson, a human, lives there too. They’re a family, hidden and safe.

If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.

The day Vic salvages and repairs an unfamiliar android labeled “HAP,” he learns of a shared dark past between Hap and Gio–a past spent hunting humans.

Tom Lake By Ann Patchett In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew. Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

In The Lives Of Puppets

| CORONADO MAGAZINE

When Hap unwittingly alerts robots from Gio’s former life to their whereabouts, the family is no longer hidden and safe. Gio is captured and taken back to his old laboratory in the City of Electric Dreams. So together, the rest of Vic’s assembled family must journey across an unforgiving and otherworldly country to rescue Gio from decommissioning, or worse, reprogramming.

Night Road By Kristin Hannah Jude does everything to keep her kids on track for college and out of harm’s way. It has always been easy - until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time Mia and Zach leave the house, she worries about them. On a hot summer’s night her worst fears are realized. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget... or the courage to forgive. Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.
