EDITOR’S NOTE Working remotely has become the new norm. My colleagues and family members have become faces I see only on-screen these days. Yes, I know we have to adjust, and change the way we do things and even in the middle of this pandemic, we have found ways to keep moving at a distance. And yet I find it difficult sometimes, my screen time has increased to 15 hours a day, I have been diagnosed with a rare eye problem, but like they say, ‘The show must go on.’ Team TIHG recognises the hard times that everyone is facing during this COVID 19 crisis, but we would like to assure you that we are doing our best to keep you engaged and motivated through various mediums and platforms. I am overwhelmed with the messages from readers and followers on social media about how they are excited about creating/styling for ‘Design Challenges’ that we do every Friday. With more and more people participating, the team feels that such activities 02 | June 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden
are surely keeping all of you chugging along in the changed world that we’ve found ourselves in. Keeping that in mind we have brought to you an issue that is forward looking and hopefully full of home inspiration. One glance at our cover and our issue’s intention and focus becomes apparent. It is adorned by the young talent of 6 architectural and design firms sharing their moving, detailed and intricately cared for projects, and we are thrilled to present them in this issue. We hope that you enjoy the details of each picturesque project and the journey that these architects/designers have gone through, producing the final results that are truly alluring and exceptional.

Architectural Marvels I am a student who is pursuing architecture as a career. I picked up tIHG at Crossroads, Bengaluru out of curiosity. And, I must say, I simply loved the magazine. For me topics of interest are Architect Speak, Designer Speak and Ideal living. the presentations, the method of layouts and the flow of the article are simply amazing. India being a very big country there are so many beautiful homes in different states. In fact the way of designing and constructing homes varies from place to place. I would love to see tIHG covering more homes from different states in India. Also, an interactive session with architects and interior designers would benefit a student like to a great extent.. “NEST by Arpit Agarwal is a brand of notebooks/ journals, jewellery, lifestyle and home decor products etc. inspired by the symbols, culture and crafts of the picturesque and unexplored paradise of North-Eastern India: 8 vividly different states from one another. The brand’s effort is to capture and explore the immense rich heritage of north-east, its diverse wildlife, flora, fauna and its colorful people. The digital medium allows us to explore a lot and reach a much wider audience. Although as a brand we have developed collections inspired by traditional art and craft, with this pandemic it becomes our responsibility to help the craft sector to bounce back. So traditionally manufactured home decor products and accessories will be the way forward.” Arpit Agarwal, Founder, NEST by Arpit Agarwal

“Kriti Handmade - Folkloric Design Studio is committed to the development of innovative ideas based on our Indian Arts and its traditions. Based on Salem in Tamil Nadu, India, we create home décor products that are hand painted and hand carved by our skilled artisans with inspiration from the rawness that we find in the folk arts across India. We work on different concepts like the confluence of kollam art with other traditional arts of India, a wide range of Pallanguzhi game boards, and also pallanguzhi as a wall décor with miniatures paintings and kollam on it. Reviving and revisiting old traditions is at the heart of décor these days. And we are constantly working towards providing decor that holds the incredible charms of our culture.” Pabitha & Prakash, Founders, Kriti Handmade

Crafts Speak
“Run by a self-taught professional Madhubani artist based out of Warwick, this art is inspired by day to day lives, mythological and folk tales. Soma Folk Art involves mixing traditional Madhubani designs with some modern elements. Drawing the repetitive patterns is therapeutic and there was a strong attraction in exploring the art form. Later it became a medium for me to tell my stories and to gradually find my own unique style. Mediums used are usually experimental with paint on watercolour paper with ink and gouache. Those who love mixing neutral shades with bright colours, geometric patterns with traditional motifs, contemporary styles with old-fashioned designs,Madhubani is just for them. Future calls for a solo exhibition and to teach traditional Madhubani art while keeping it relevant to modern world and lifestyle. Soma Chakraborty Debnath, Founder, Soma Folk Art

Crafts Speak
“Nature and traditional geometrical patterns have always been an inspiration for Neerja Blue Pottery. 'Hand-made' is the word which truly speaks to the originality of each piece. 'Blue Pottery' is tedious and many experts come together to make one piece a success, taking 30-60 days to complete each. For 2020 our theme will be “Vibrant colours and designs” in order to remind people of the happy times we should look forward to. We want to create utility based masterpieces for the future generations to remember this craft by. The brand supports hundreds of Blue Pottery craftsmen and works jointly to create a self reliant atmosphere in the villages where this craft is still preserved. The craft has rich heritage and culture and I have been making my collection of unusual pieces for the past 40 years, so the generations to follow see the uniqueness in it.” Leela Bordia, Founder, Neerja International

he young owners wanted a beautiful home with cosy corners, bright and open feel with a few generic materials like marble flooring, wood to add warmth. When the designer’s team started showing them references, they realised that the owners did not have a particular language that was constant throughout the space. That is where Ali’s expertise came into the picture. Instead of treating this as a limitation, he decided to evoke an eclectic feel by designing each room differently, getting various materials together and lending a vibe that has an ideal mix of elements coming together to create a desired zone. As you enter the formal den, the wooden flooring doubles up as panelling on the wall and flows further to form a part of the ceiling. It immediately catches the eye by producing an illusion of expanse, comfort and coziness. Wooden joists on either side of the den effortlessly create stealthy surroundings that add to the tribal illusion, as well as accentuate the earthiness of the space. While natural materials enhance the room’s softness, the Cuban inspired wooden armchairs and the relaxed centre table, nonchalantly chic in onyx and wood add to the eclectic vibe. The living room’s plum hued walls and the tribal-inspired art on the plush end of the room’s wall by Bharti Prajapati are quite inviting. What can’t be missed is the metal screen with shelves that acts as a light barrier between both the seating areas, without trying

too hard, and yet adds a profound quality to the formal-informal setting. Keeping the family’s relaxation zone in mind, the designer made space for a lounge cum bar that showcases a natural element with its cane shutters, and the earthy tones integrate the space with the living room. The cane lamp from MuseLab at a quiet corner adds a certain lightness while the two loungers in wood facing each other bring in both vintage and contemporary vibes. You can’t miss the wall that adorns MF Hussain’s and Datta Bansode’s artwork just above the relaxed seating. Unlike the muted tones of the living room, the dining area oozes zesty colours. A vivacious corner with teal fabrics and glass dining is supported on a vertical and wooden marble base, functional yet a charmingly decorative piece which sets the tone for the space. Adding to the contemporary colour palette is the beautiful painting depicting colourful houses by artist Suresh Gulage. Next comes the most colourful space of the house! A playful and youthful space, the kid’s room is designed by Ali keeping a growing person in mind. The room would grow and unfold, in terms of functionality as the child grows older. Taking inspiration from nature, the space is fashioned with a four-poster bed, wardrobe and study storage. The dual-purpose storage ledge that converts into a toy chest, is custommade with geometrical patterned colour block art by Girjesh Jaiswar. Heading to the master bedroom, we encounter a mix and match of experimental elements that create a cohesiveness in the space.

A sophisticated headboard in suede angular pattern is offset with a radiant and smooth white onyx at the back. To create an airy mood, the windows were positioned directly behind the bed, designed as an extended part of the headboard - a meeting point for the two, whilst creating an imaginative elevation in the room. The marvel lies in viewing it all together, as pieces of a modernist puzzle falling in place. Adding to the simplistic textures is the wardrobe, covered in noty walnut veneer grains, lending playfulness to an otherwise contemporary room. Bringing various materials together while being stylish and careful, the major challenge for Ali was to complete the entire house in the short timeline of four months. Of course he achieved the deadline and also his desire to achieve a home that has a tribal spirit throughout! TIHG

nspired by a little bit of everything, this incredibly picturesque 2,300 sqft property is the perfect abode for the joint family that is was intended for. In beautiful adherence with the client’s brief, the house was treated as three mini-homes within the expanse of a larger home. The parents’, the elder son’s family and the younger son’s family, each had a different vision for their personal sections of the home. And it was left to the expertise of the incredible Sarah Sham of Essajees Atelier to seamlessly blend together these visions in order to create a home that speaks to all its occupants equally. The home is designed as a visual treat right from its entry foyer. With the addition of a stunning glass door, the space becomes incredibly inviting space while simultaneously guaranteeing privacy for the home owners. Moving into the living space, where the whole family would come together, one is welcomed by an exquisitely curated and placed collection of interior elements. From the Hatsu rug, to the custom-made sofas from Essajees Atelier itself, each addition adds to the visual appeal of the space. And the wainscoting going across the main walls, is the striking selection that aides this task with its subtlety and elegance. Much like the home itself, the inspiration drawn from the family’s travels and colour choices is evident here, but the view of the cityscape visible on both sides, is what has been kept as the main focus so as to preserve the intrinsic spirit of the home. Apart from the living room, it is the kitchen and the dining room where the family spends considerable time together. Therefore, the wall near the kitchen was opened up to accommodate a glass door that allows in natural light to illuminate this important common space. As for the dining room, the place where the family eats, a custom table and a Chinese cabinet from Essajees was chosen with care. Further a refreshing vibe was incorporated with the addition of some plants to finish of the look. For the master bedroom, meant for the elderly parents, the wainscoting from the living room was brought in as a continuation. As a calming pop of colour, mint green upholstery is chosen. The space was given an overall mature look in accordance with the tastes of the room’s occupants. Similarly, one son’s bedroom was given a mirror paneling on the backwall to make the space appear larger. While the other son’s bedroom was infused with a distinct charm, where a grand headboard in grey suede and gold leaf finish acts as an alluring accent piece. The Ideal Home and Garden June 2020 |

n apartment located on the 9th floor of a city building and a client brief that called for a strong consideration of Vaastu beliefs, is what Shilpa Jain Balvally and Sameer Balvally of Studio Osmosis walked into when this BKC Residence project in Mumbai came to them. The client was certain that they wanted a décor style that was minimalistic and contemporary and yet exudes exquisite class. And this defined, guided and ignited a magnetic spark in the design task as the team got to work. The residence came with Bottochino marble flooring and well-designed bathrooms, and hence the furniture, upholstery and colours were the areas where the studio stepped in with their expertise. The apartment itself consisted of a large living room at the center and two bedrooms on either side of it. The entrance to the apartment is in the east direction and is given a minimal style lobby, with artwork by Suresh Parihar and fabric artwork by Shivani Shroff. Earthy colours with strong textures are selected for this space. The living room is designed along similar lines, with concrete finished shelves that are held together with thin metal framework giving a sense of weightlessness to the space. And ultimately this outer space-based setting opens out into a lush green balcony and inviting outdoor furniture that give it a cozy feel. The master bedroom, being of Vaastu’s earth realm has a distinct look. Dark grey colour has been incorporated, which serve both the Vaastu requirements and the client’s personal taste alike. However, soft furnishings are used to add some softness to the look simultaneously. A dominant four poster bed stands tall amongst grey panelled walls. The work room belongs to the water realm, as per Vaastu, and hence blue was chosen as the dominant colour for this space. A fluid screen is additionally selected with the study table, which gives the distinct impression of the fluid movements of water. The media room is kept minimal with dark acoustic wallpaper, a bar and an ochre accent sofa, while the guest room is noticeable designed to be light and cheerful like the
Shilpa Jain Balvally & Sameer Balvally first rays of morning sun. The project was an interesting challenge for Shilpa and Sameer due to the need to work around the mood and colour hues, as these were the foundation for the design philosophy of the house. They had to work backwards, by working the finer details first and then looking at the larger picture collectively. Every art and piece of furniture was selected for the story that they individually conveyed. And thus, the studio collaborated with multiple artists, sculptures, furniture designers to bring the client’s dream vision to reality. It is a true marker of the success of the design plan that as a person moves from one room to the other, they find themselves undeniably immersed in areas which have a story to tell; a story of their remarkable existence in the cosmic whole. nvested in to serve the dreams of the present and the future, this magnificent family home was diligently considered in all ways by the client. The design foundation was based along Vaastu lines, as per the client’s requirements, which the incredible visionaries at Khushalani Associates welcomed as a promising opportunity. What was a vacant plot inside a gated community, surrounded by lush greenery, was constructed in ways that helped create spaces in the house that were customized to meet the personal requirements of each member of the family. Based on the clear dictates of Vaastu, the client wanted a strict rectangular plan with a ‘Brahmasthana’ (open zone) in the center of the house, with the orientation of the main door, kitchen, temple and master bedroom decided by it. Rather than be intimidated by the limitation, Rajiv chose this as the perfect opportunity to create a home where there is clear segregation between the private, semiprivate and socializing spaces, as one moves from the west to east side of the structure. While vertically, the house was visualized to have three floors, with a master suite on each floor of the house, that carefully integrates the personalities of each member. The architectural task was to maintain a comfortable environment for the users while allowing the bungalow to have a panoramic view from end to end, using sliding window systems. And this was achieved using deep

overhangs, cavity walls on the south facade of the house and terracing towards the north and east. In terms of colour, the home overall elegantly adheres to the owner’s inclination towards browns and beiges, and yet challenges it in order to provide distinct character to every space. Therefore, each space acts as a design marker of the very function of it, as the architects used this to guide them in creating charmingly appropriate looks in line with their usage. For example, the family living space which will be used for daily familial activities, has a more expedient scale and a warm cozy look. The study is given a vintage, deep brown look, as requested by the client, but with blue velvet seating that make it the perfect seating to read. Similarly, the atrium is carefully created, being the introduction to the house and its design. The double height space opens up the house to the onlooker, a split staircase and the overlooking passage-way connects the first and the ground floor visually and spatially; while an imposing Melogranoblu chandelier binds the space together. Making the space both inviting and alluring. The biggest design challenge for Rajiv was to maintain stylistic coherence while giving each space a distinct visual identity. The exquisitely visualized home, has been carefully designed on all three floors, with space allocated to have ample social and individual-centered spaces. The family of five, were intentionally looking for a space that their eventually growing family could grow into and they were provided with just that. A house tailor made for their present, future, joys and futures together amidst charm and beauty. TIHG

ontemporary, neo-classical and traditional Indian dĂŠcor styles have very little in common and yet the talented creativity of Dhaval Shellugar and Farah Ahmed of FADD Studio brought them seamlessly together for this home for the Hedge family. Dipped in elegance and style, this house reveals the best of design vision that brings together diverse styles. The charming home is a fusion of three different styles unusually united together to form a hybrid design style. Firstly, neo-classical shell in warm wood where molded cornices meets timeless beige marble flooring to bring in a lightness to the design. Second, in contrast to this traditional shell, straight-lined contemporary furniture is used. And finally, a beautiful mix of traditional Indian rugs with bold and contemporary Indian art is the icing on the cake that brings in both vibrancy and character to the space. These three ingredients are evident in all rooms and yet their blending with experienced flare brings a seamless feel overall. The Ideal Home and Garden June 2020 |

The designers have specifically used vibrant and tropical colours for the common areas of the home for drama and energy. The living room is a combination of mustard, leaf green and blue that give it a inviting allure that would ensure a relaxed time here. The bedrooms however, they designed using mostly soft and muted tones. The dining has a classically carved table that was placed with the marked intent of family and social dinners. And the chairs have special upholstery using a fabric depicting an Indian procession in progress that is both striking and meaningful. On the dining wall is a striking collage of old and new images framed in a particular way using curved edged and off-centered vignettes to provide an overall vintage feel. Throughout the home contemporary accessories are placed all over. Brass and champagne highlights are seen here and there to give it boosts of elegance. These include the bar that is champagne, the coffee table have metal details, the lights are predominately brass and the main door is champagne leafed. On either side of the main door are two geometric consoles in black and white. A bull’s head is above one console and a mirror over the other. This dramatic entry sets the tone for the rest of the magnificent house that is profound in the impact that it has on the moved viewers indeed. TIHG

home is not just a wall bound structure where the weary come to rest; it is at the very foundation of one’s identity and the owner’s of this magnificent house were deeply aware of this. It was thus at the very forefront of their brief that Indian culture and traditions be incorporated into the design plan. Residing in Bahrain, they wanted this home to convey their values that they want to pass on to their children. Thus traditional infused with contemporary was the décor style that Thought Parallels’ architects chose for this loving family of four. Located within a private enclave, connected yet away from the chaos of Kozhikode city, the home was designed with the warmth and care appropriate for a familial space. The architects chose a harmonious architectural plan, with a typology that can be identified with a specific region. They employed novel and innovative methods to infuse energy into the essence of traditional sciences that they utilized here. In light of the climate factors of the region, sloping roofs and large overhangs are placed to combat the heavy monsoon rains. But also patio and large expanses of the verandah are provided, so that these semi-permeable spaces give the owners the chance to enjoy the exteriors and rains too. As for the summers, a blank wall is also present behind the terrace in order to cut the heat coming in from the southern direction. Structurally, the house optimizes its linear horizontal lines, vast cantilevered roofs weaving around the resident trees and an immersive view of the outside using large glass doors. The house truly plays around with the idea of boundaries not just with regard to the exteriors, but also within the house itself having chosen an open plan for the living spaces. Sliding bi-fold doors and sometimes the lack of doors itself, create a seamless space that is expansive in its continuity.
In place of conventional demarcations of spaces using walls and doors, the house is made utilizing the surrounding views and strategically placed rooms. These rooms have also been specifically designed in order to respectfully accommodate the family’s demand for the clear separation of the public and private spaces within the house. As a result, the ground floor of the house consists of all the areas that are meant for gatherings and socializing, while the private spaces are relegated to the upper level. Made rich with Indian familial values and living principles, this project is simultaneously a true representation of the innovations of the present. The home made primarily out of steel, for lightness and aesthetics, with modern and contemporary style and engineering, provides an emotionally and visually immersive setting for this wonderful family to grow up in.
