This is to inform people it takes barely five minutes to register by going online at www. gov.uk/registertovote. A series of adverts will spread the Got 5? message by suggesting it is as quick and easy to register as it is to run a bath, fill a washing machine or wait for nail polish to dry. Everyone aged 18 and above is urged to take five minutes to secure their vote for important local elections. Voters will go to the polls on Thursday 2 May to elect a Councillor in each of St Albans City and District Council’s 20 wards. There will also be elections for town and parish councils throughout the District. To be able to have a say, people must be registered at their current address by midnight on Friday 12 April. The Electoral Commission has launched a campaign – supported by the Council - called Got 5?.

There will be advertising on social media, TV, radio and outdoor locations including bus stops and train stations. People who were eligible to vote in last year’s District Council elections and whose details have not changed will still be registered to vote. They can check by calling the Council’s registration office on 01727 819294. Mike Lovelady, the Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “There are only a few weeks left to make sure you can take part in the local elections.

RETURNS FOR A 38th YEAR!

SUNDAY 9th JUNE 2019

With so many Half Marathon events available in the UK, it can be tough to work out which one is for you. St Albans Half Marathon has a race for everyone and after all these years is still focused on the local community, leading it to win silver at the 2017 Running Awards. Now in its 38th year, the St Albans Half Marathon, saw over 7000 runners take to the stunning streets of St Albans last year. As well as the standard Half Marathon and Wheelchair Half Marathon, St Albans Half are one of the only events to offer a chip timed Walking Half Marathon, allowing budding athletes to take on the distance at their own pace. Not stopping there, St Albans Half squeeze in a 5k and 1.5 Mile Fun Run too, allowing children to enter both of these races. We think the St Albans Half Marathon is a standard distance, but far from a standard race. First of all, it is a not-for-profit event, meaning that every penny of profit is donated to local charities and voluntary organisations. This year, the main benefitting charity will be Peace Hospice Care, as voted by the local community. Donations will also be made to all charities and voluntary organisations who help with marshalling on the day, meaning that your registration fee won’t only help you to reach your new PB, but will help local charities too! Last year over £24,000 was raised! 28

Oh, did we mention that you get a free ice lolly at the finish line? So whether you’re looking for a new challenge, to beat your personal best, raise money for charity, or just get the whole family active, why not sign up to one of the St Albans Half Marathon races! MUSEUM + GALLERY HOSTS BIGGEST EXHIBITION YET! The new £7.75 million St Albans Museum + Gallery is hosting its biggest exhibition yet – featuring internationally renowned artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth.

Hepworth, who died aged 72 in 1975, is one of the few female artists of her time to achieve worldwide prominence. The exhibition is focused on the years 1948 to 1953 when Hepworth concentrated on capturing the human form across drawing and sculpture. Meanwhile, the new St Albans Museum + Gallery staff are celebrating visitor numbers that were 63% above target during the first seven months. More than 195,000 people visited the attraction between its opening in early June last year to the end of December – almost reaching the 12-month target of 200,000. More details on what is happening at St Albans Museums are on Page 3. marquee, giving you even more opportunities to buy bespoke, beautifully crafted work, from some of the county’s finest craftsmen.

Headlining the Show will be Atkinson Action Horses, a stunt and liberty display team never before seen in Hertfordshire, although you might have seen them in ‘Poldark’ or ‘Victoria’. Due to the popularity of the local food and drink available across the Showground last year, Show organisers have decided to push that even further and brought in Hertfordshire company Gusto to run the Farmers Bar and Kitchen, who intend to turn it into a ‘must visit’, rustic hub of food and drink - serving up from as soon as the Show opens at 8.30. If you’re a foodie visiting the Show, make sure to check out the new Food Hall. Its new location allows it to be bigger than ever before, creating yet more opportunities to sample some delicious treats. The Show is a prime chance to ‘Shop Local’ and will once again have two ‘Made In Hertfordshire’ Marquees, but this year will also host a ‘Etsy Hertfordshire’

34

The Hertfordshire Farmers will also be taking centre stage with their ‘Fantastic Forklifts’ display you won’t see anywhere else in the country! New in the Countryside Area will be the ‘Dog and Duck Show’ joining the hilarious Sheep Show, bassets and beagles. While in the Village Green, there will be a BMX display with the opportunity to join in, as well as live music and theatre performances. Make sure you stay down there to see the Strongest Man World Record Attempt Tractor

Pull on the Saturday, or see them in the Jubilee Arena on the Sunday. Pig racing will be back in the Hertfordshire Farmyard! This family favourite area of the Show will also be running a ‘make your own Hertfordshire lunch’, where children will be able to make their own pizzas using Hertfordshire produce. Tractor Ted will also be back with his bouncy castle and games, while surrounded by real high tech and vintage machinery.

For the farmyard animal lovers, across the Show, you’ll be able to see Miniature Horses through to rare Heavy breeds, or see a huge variety livestock in the Sheep or Cattle marquees. Hertfordshire County Show is the ultimate day out for all members of the family – from those who just want to sit back, relax and take in some music, to the extreme sports lovers, to the shopaholics. HOW TO HELP ROUGH SLEEPERS

An information leaflet about how to help rough sleepers has been produced by St Albans City and District Council. The guidance draws on the expertise and knowledge of Council officers and voluntary groups which are involved with the issue. Headed, “Concerned about a rough sleeper?” it includes practical advice about what to do if you have seen a rough sleeper on the streets of St Albans. In a concise question and answer format, the booklet also explains what is being done for rough sleepers by the Council and partner organisations. These include the charities Open Door, Centre33 and Emmaus as well as Hightown Housing Association, the Cathedral and St Albans Community Mental Health Team. Among other activities, the Council and Open Door fund outreach workers. They talk to rough sleepers to ensure they are aware of the help on offer and to encourage them to take it up. The leaflet also highlights the extra beds that are made available in the City during severe weather. However, for often complex reasons, some rough sleepers choose to remain on the streets. Open Door also does not allow people to stay at its shelter if they are clearly under the influence of drink or illegal drugs. Distributed to points around the District including libraries and other public buildings, the leaflet is also available online at bit.ly/2GqFJk8 36

The Council carried out an annual count of rough sleepers in the District on one night in November last year and estimated 11 people were sleeping rough. It is required to obtain this figure every year and submit it to the Government. Figures for previous years were: 2017 – 5; 2016 – 13; 2015 – 19; and 2014 – 11. Councillor Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Inclusion, said:“The leaflet offers practical advice to people who are troubled by the sight of a rough sleeper and want to do something. “It tells them how they can refer someone for help and lists the contact details of a number of appropriate groups. “I hope it will make people aware that the Council, together with other organisations, is working hard behind the scenes to help rough sleepers and put them on a new pathway. “I would also urge people who want to help to consider volunteering to work with one of the charities that are active on this issue or make a regular donation.” Useful web links:

WITH CLOVER SINGING CLUB!

A new concept in ensemble singing for ladies, with an emphasis on socialising, relaxation and laughter. The Clover Singing Club was started by musician Charlotte Vickerstaff for semi retired or retired ladies who are looking for a daytime activity where they can sing with others in a non-judgemental and relaxed environment. Charlotte says. ‘We try all sorts of songs and genres - from rounds, to folk and quiet meditative songs, to full-scale rock ballads, although nothing too classical or difficult to follow.’

Members don’t have to read music and there aren’t any auditions. The group is run as a not-for-profit cooperative and social events are organised each term. New members are welcomed throughout the term and a free taster session is offered to let people try it out first. Charlotte has a group meeting each Monday afternoon during term-time inWheathampstead and onWednesday mornings at the Harpenden Trust in Southdown.

HARPENDEN HIDDEN HISTORY AIR RAID SHELTERS

Following the results of structural surveys, Harpenden Town Council made the decision to infill the historic air raid shelters located around the Town Centre in September 2018. The surveys showed that the structures have deteriorated significantly from the previous structural survey, and had become a risk to public safety. Council records indicate that Bowers Parade and Leyton Green shelters were granted permission at a similar time in July and the beginning of August 1939. Queens Road appears to have been earlier, having been planned in 1938, approved in March 1939 and completed in August of that year. The constructions were similar to many trench shelters, with precast concrete panels being generally used for walls and roof linings. Ceilings are generally flat although the panels that house the emergency exits are tilted for an unknown reason. The floors were laid to falls towards the entrances and this coupled with the continuous edge channels and the floor gullies near entrances appears to be responsible for the dry conditions experienced. In order to preserve the history of the shelters, they have developed interpretation boards which tell the story of the shelters from WWII, and have had interactive 3D scans of the shelters produced allowing all to see the layout and feature of the underground bunkers.

The scans were completed by Weston Media and can be viewed online at: www.harpenden.gov.uk/air-raid-shelters Click on the map to select which shelter to view and see our hidden past!

Many of the buildings and other landmarks from that earlier era are still with us, though their history is sometimes not readily apparent. Other important features from the past are now only memories, but the Society seeks to keep these alive, by bringing Harpenden’s heritage to a wider audience. In the Society’s archive collection are many thousands of historical pictures, books, maps and other fascinating documents and artefacts. The History Centre at Park Hall is open on Tuesday afternoons, and otherwise by arrangement, for academic study as well as for anyone wanting to browse and know more about the gradual evolution of the area and it’s community through past decades, and indeed centuries, to the present day. Supported by Harpenden Town Council, St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and with the co-operation of the Harpenden Society, the Local History Society plays a vital role in giving Harpenden its unique identity within Hertfordshire.

1. The George is first mentioned in 1507, but maybe not on this site. It was rebuilt in C19 and is seen here in the 1930s. The site of the garage to the south (now Pizza Express) was a tea garden in Victorian times, when parties drove in by wagonette for ‘Beanfeasts’ and dancing on the lawn. 2. Kingston House, No. 6 High Street was built in 1912 as Edgar Salisbury’s hardware shop on the site of Dr Kingston’s house. Later occupants were Halford’s, C&A stores and M&Co. Note the shields above the windows marking Industry, Strength, Goodwill and Service; also the Harpenden and Hertfordshire coats of arms. 3. TheWhite Lion at No. 28 High Street was a small Victorian pub, with decorative moulded bricks. The Perfect Pizza sign hangs from a bracket which once supported a model of a white lion, see left. 4. The Old Cock Inn has traces of a C17 timber-framed building and is more than likely the site of still earlier hostelries.

2. 72 High St - Another much altered C17 timber-frame structure lies behind the brick façade. It is believed to have formed part of an even earlier & larger group of hostelry buildings. It was the Old Red Lion in the early 1900s, and Rolts cycle & pram shop in the 1960s, until it was refurbished as shops in 1976. 56 58

6. 73-75 High Street, at the corner of Sun Lane. A late C17 timber-framed structure, the end of which was demolished to widen Sun Lane in 1931. The remaining section was converted into shops in July 1955. The Sun pub was here from about 1637 until 1800 (or maybe 1877). It was owned by the Hawkins family in the 1780s. 7. 65-69 High Street. The C17 timber-framed cottages at 67 (The Limes) and 65, had early C18 wallpaintings imitating panelling, which were destroyed when the building was refurbished in the 1970s. In the 1850s No. 65 was Harpenden’s first post office. No. 69 (Tollgate Cottage/Hotel) was added in the 1870s.‘Tollgate’ refers to the barrier controlling traffic from Luton, just south of Sun Lane, when the Turnpike Trust was formed in 1743. 8. The Foresters Arms, a pub which has given its name to the 2012 housing development behind, became an off-licence, before conversion into an estate agency. The Foresters were a self-help charity founded in the early C19. 9. Bowers Parade was built in 1936 in the gardens of Bowers House, which still stands behind. Though a handsome parade, the fact that it concealed Bowers House was highly controversial at the time, which helped give birth to the Harpenden Society. 10. Cross Keys pub - formerly the White Hart.A much altered early C18 building. The innkeeper in 1830 was Henry Oldaker who moved to The Bull (The Old House, Leyton Road) and helped start regular horse racing on the Common in 1848. 58

60

11. Brewery House - built in 1871 as his home by James Mardall, who owned the Peacock Brewery (on the site of the Methodist Church), one of two breweries then in the High Street. In 1951 the house was sold and converted to shops (currently Harpenden Interiors and WH Smiths). 12. Vaughan Road was cut through in the 1890s, following the demolition of cottages in Lower High Street, with Pellants (clock makers/repairers) at the corner. Willmott’s grocery was replaced by the County & Westminster Bank (now NatWest).

13. Home Farm and Chestnut Cottage were pulled down in 1894 to build Ridley’s ironmongers’ shop at the Corner of Station Road (formerly Staker’s Lane) - now HSBC. 14. Harpenden Arms Hotel built as the Railway Hotel in 1870 by James Mardall (owner of the Peacock Brewery), the landlord in 1890 was Richard Longland, a wine and spirit dealer, corn and hay merchant, and proprietor of the Livery Stables behind the hotel further up Station Road. 61

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK 4/5

St a r s

Ch r istia n

B la n d

If Moonlight was a stunning and radical breakout for Barry Jenkins, then If Beale Street Could Talk is more of a consolidation of his previous good work. It’s a slightly more measured effort following a more obvious narrative arc, but this is a striking work, blending stunning and lyrical moments that seem to transcend the world of harsh reality in which the rest of this film exists. That’s the kind of feat which only the best directors can achieve. Translated from the acclaimed novel by James Baldwin, this adaptation follows Tish Rivers, played quite outstandingly by Kiki Layne, whose husband and long-time lover Alonzo has been placed behind bars. It’s a difficult journey, emotionally hard-hitting from start to finish, but one absolutely worth taking for the pleasure of the performances alone. Regina King as Tish’s mother absolutely steals the show, a quiet but powerful performance that lingers well after the credits. Stephan James is perfect as Alonzo, whose breath-taking chemistry with Kiki Layne and beautiful performance creates much of the aforesaid emotional weight of the film, it’s genuinely marvellous to experience such a work. Adapting from book to screen can always be a perilous journey for the original work, not that you’d know that from watching Beale. It’s that rare adaptation that keeps all of the novel’s lush beauty and deep meaning while still feeling highly cinematic. The human dialogue and subtle commentary transfer especially well making the film feel as beautifully rapturous as the book it’s based on. But this film doesn’t just owe its success to its screenplay. Its artful aesthetics, especially the instrumental score by Nicholas Britell and the cinematography by James Laxton, lend much of this film’s beauty, showing off the stunning and varied locations that Jenkins uses, while capturing the overwhelming emotion of every scene. 60

However, Beale does rely a little too much on narration to advance its plot and some of the characters, particularly Alonzo’s mother, are sidelined making the film feel a little underdeveloped by its finale, although it is still a fittingly remarkable conclusion. “...Love brought you here. If you trusted love this far, don’t panic now” were the words of James Baldwin, and it’s fair to say that Beale captures that kind of deep-rooted feeling and meaning, a film that, if it not a masterpiece like Moonlight, is only a small step down. Great directors make great movies, and Jenkins is clearly well on his way to becoming one.

St Albans Clock Tower Built between 1403 & 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. It was first & foremost a political statement; the townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of St Albans’ Abbey. The Tower’s bell, which has survived over 600 years of use, allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the Curfew. It also gave the alarm in case of “fire or fray”. Its bell rang out the first Battle of St. Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today you can climb to the top of the Tower & enjoy magnificent views of St Albans & the surrounding countryside. Disabled access is difficult as there is a restricted entrance and 93 narrow steps to the top. Open Saturday and Sunday only (and selected Bank Holidays), Easter to end of September 10:30am - 5pm.

Beauty

STAYING SAFE IN It is important to protect your and your children’s skin in the sun to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion. Here is some useful advice from the NHS to help us all stay safe in the sun this summer. What sun protection factor (SPF) should I use? Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The higher the SPF, the better. Go for broad spectrum sunscreens, which protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Make sure the product is not past its expiry date; most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years. And don’t use little, it takes 9 teaspoons to cover an adult from head to toe… which is a lot more than most of us use. What is broad spectrum and the star-rating? Broad-spectrum products provide protection against the sun’s UVB and UVA rays. The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measurement of the amount of UVB protection; the higher the number, the greater the protection. In the UK, UVA protection is measured with a star ratings; snscreens has from 0 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the protection. 92

How long can I stay in the sun? Don’t spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen. Sunscreen should not be used as an excuse to stay out in the sun; instead, it offers protection when exposure is unavoidable. The summer sun is most damaging to your skin in the middle of the day so spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, under umbrellas, trees, canopies or indoors. Should I reapply sunscreen if I swim? Water washes off sunscreen and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you’re not getting burned. Water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure; even “waterproof” sunscreens should be reapplied after going in the water. Are children more at risk of sunburn? Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. Use at least a factor 15 sunscreen and choose a broad-spectrum brand that has a four or five-star rating. Apply it to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies’ skin, as these are less likely to irritate their skin.

MAKE A DATE TO JOIN

THE RACE FOR LIFE IN HERTFORDSHIRE Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. She continued:“The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Hertfordshire with people locally and the whole of the UK.

PEOPLE in Hertfordshire are being encouraged to make a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at the following locations: Saturday 1st June Welwyn & Hatfield Pretty Muddy at Stanborough Park Sunday 2nd June Welwyn & Hatfield Race for Life at Stanborough Park Saturday 7th June Watford Pretty Muddy at Cassiobury Park Sunday 8th June Watford Race for Life at Cassiobury Park Sunday 7th July Stevenage Race for Life at Fairlands Valley Park Sunday 21st July St. Albans Race for Life at Verulamium Park Annie Ashwell, Cancer Research UK’s Hertfordshire Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Hertfordshire access to the latest treatments. “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.” 94

“Taking part in our Race for Life events enables likeminded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now. She added:“Our Race for Life events have been womenonly since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone women, men and children – has the chance to participate together. “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend. “To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.” Annie continued:“This year, we’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.” Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. To enter Race for Life today visit:

Starter Warm Scallop Caesar Salad Serves 2

Method: Use a heavy pan which heats evenly. Pans that aren’t non stick will give the best browning, and be sure to choose a pan where scallops can be cooked in a single layer. Heat olive oil over medium-high heat about 30 seconds, then add scallops and cook quickly, probably not more than 2 minutes per side. Don’t have the heat too high or the scallops will release moisture and won’t brown properly. (Scallops are better slightly underdone than overdone, so don’t overcook.

Ingredients: • 8 large sea scallops • 4 cups of washed romaine lettuce While scallops cook, assemble lettuce on two serving or mixed leaves plates. Place four scallops on top of lettuce on each plate. • 1-2 tsp. olive oil (depends on your Turn pan to high and put water in, then scrape the bottom pan) of the pan to get any browned bits, keeping heat high to let • 1-2 Table spoons of water some of the water evaporate. After about one minute turn (for larger pan use 2 Table spoons) off heat. Stir in salad dressing and lemon juice and let it get • 3 Table spoons Caesar Salad slightly warm in the hot pan, then pour over salad and serve. Dressing Top with fresh ground black pepper if desired. • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice 98

Fire doors are a vital part of the building fabric, dividing the building into individual fire compartments, constructed and lined with suitable fire resisting materials to reduce the spread of fire.

If you live in a flat, it’s a good idea to check your doors meet fire regulations. A fire door is a vital safety device engineered to save lives and property.

What do they actually do?

Fire doors act as a barrier to a fire, cutting off and protecting parts of a building. • Reducing the damage caused by fire and smoke • Protecting route of evacuation • Providing the emergency services with a protected route to access the building • Protecting users of a building who may have difficulty evacuating quickly.

Besides their heavy duty nature, fire doors are selfclosing. Sometimes people put in new doors, or modify fire doors so they don’t close automatically. By doing so, you could be putting yourself and your neighbours at risk if there is a fire. Also, you may not be complying with the terms of your insurance, which means insurers may not pay out if there is a fire! There is lots of helpful fire safety guidance on the www.stalbans.gov.uk website. Just enter ‘fire safety’ in the search box.

Email Fraud Computer service fraud is one of the most common in the County. A fraudster phones you at home and claims to be from Microsoft, say, or your internet service provider. They tell you there is a problem with your computer which they can fix for a fee. Remember legitimate companies will never cold call you and ask for remote access to your computer nor will they ask you for your financial details. • Don’t open attachments from unexpected emails. • If an email asks you to use a link to log in to your online account – do not do this. Fake websites often look just like the real thing. • Never respond to emails which ask for your financial or personal details. • Even if a cold caller knows some information about you, this doesn’t mean they are genuine. More than 5,000 residents have now signed up to MyStAlbans - an online personalised account which gives access to many Council services such as: • get customised information about their home and neighbourhood. • go paperless, accessing bills, paying Council Tax, and checking balances online. • tell us about waste and recycling issues. • report fly-tipping, litter, anti-social behaviour and noise. • apply for parking permits. • sign up for Council updates. • access housing services. Cllr Alec Campbell, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Leader of St Albans City and District Council, said:“The MyStAlbans account is really easy to use. Residents can access customised information, pay bills securely and tell us about issues in one place online. “The account is being launched as part of the Council’s digitisation programme. In today’s digital world, people expect to be able to access information and to report issues instantly using their digital devices. MyStAlbans helps them do that, simply and swiftly. “MyStAlbans is also available to carers and non-residents who wish to sign up for Council updates and other relevant services.” MyStAlbans uses https for internet security. Access to a MyStAlbans account is created via a resident’s personal e-mail address and a strong password that they create themselves. Setting up a MyStAlbans account does not provide automatic access to any personal data held by the Council. If residents wish to access information about their Council Tax Bill through MyStAlbans, they need to use their online key printed on their Council Tax Bill. New services will be added to MyStAlbans in the future, including the ability for Council tenants to access personalised information relating to housing services. ALMOST 50 FIRES IN HERTFORDSHIRE HOMES WERE CAUSED BY WHITE GOODS LAST YEAR! New figures from Hertfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service show that 49 home fires in 2018 were caused by faulty appliances. The most common culprits were tumble dr yers, which caused 10 fires last year, and washing machines, which caused nine fires. In response, the fire and rescue ser vice is urging residents to spend a few minutes registering appliances using the website www.registermyappliance.org.uk If there’s a problem with a model you own, you’ll receive an email alert telling you what you need to do, whether it’s a safety repair a complete recall of the product.

ALMOST 50 FIRES IN HERTFORDSHIRE HOMES Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Terry Hone, said, “White goods are one of the biggest causes of house fires, but fewer than half of us register for important safety warnings and we know that recalled models are still in use as a result. We’re asking residents to register their appliances with this government-backed scheme and take a few simple steps to reduce the risk of fire. “It might be convenient to put the dishwasher on overnight or to put a load in the tumble dryer when you go out, but if you’re asleep or not in you won’t spot the signs that something’s going wrong and you could end up dealing with a serious fire as a result.”

Continued

Top tips for avoiding white goods fires: • Don’t leave appliances running overnight or when you’re out of the house unless they’re designed to be left on all the time (such as fridges) • Register your appliance at www.registermyappliance.org.uk so that the manufacturer can notify you about any recalls or safety concerns • Look after your appliance – build ups of dust, fluff or grease increase the likelihood of fire. • Don’t use damaged appliances – if they start to make odd noises or aren’t working properly stop using them & get them checked. • Check if an appliance you’ve bought, or are intending to buy second hand, has been recalled at www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/product-recalls/ where you can get further advice • Always have a working smoke alarm on each level of your property and ensure you & your family have an escape plan in the event of a fire.

Idling... SWITH OFF FOR CLEANER AIR DO YOUR BIT FOR AIR QUALITY

Running your engine when you’re not driving it (idling) truly gets you nowhere. It reduces your vehicle’s fuel economy, costs you money and creates pollution which is harmful to health. The trouble is that stationary cars release up to 20 times more exhaust emissions than when the car is moving at 30 mph. These pollutants have detrimental effects on human health and contribute to respiratory illness, cancer and premature deaths. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable. It is estimated that poor air quality leads to 40,000 premature deaths each year in the UK. Compare this to the 1,713 deaths from road traffic accidents and we can see that this is a significant problem. People can be affected by poor air quality even if they never experience any noticeable pollution related-health effects such as breathing problems because some of the effects are chronic and long-term. St Albans City and District Council are committed to reducing unnecessary engine idling as a means to improving local air quality, preventing health impacts and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the ‘Switch Off For Cleaner Air’ campaign we are asking drivers to switch off their engines if they are to be stationary for longer than a minute. We are looking for volunteers to help raise awareness about this important matter locally.

Please visit www.stalbans.gov.uk/anti-idling for details.
