DESIGNS FOR NEW LEISURE, CULTURE AND ARTS FACILITIES IN HARPENDEN BEING DEVELOPED
Feedback on proposals for new leisure, arts and cultural facilities for Harpenden and the rest of the District is being taken forward in the £18 million project’s designs.
The designs use feedback received during the final phase of the community consultation, completed earlier this month, and from meetings and workshops held last year.
St Albans City and District Council is now developing detailed designs for an integrated leisure centre and adjacent arts facility ready for a planning application this October.
At a meeting on Thursday 16 March, Cabinet heard that all responses have now been consolidated and a full analysis will be published online soon.

DESIGNS FOR NEW LEISURE, CULTURE AND ARTS FACILITIES IN HARPENDEN BEING DEVELOPED Continued In response to stakeholder feedback and requests from the public the designs aim to provide: Leisure Centre • Increased swimming capacity and space for spectators with a larger learner pool, including a movable floor, & 100 spectator seats alongside the main & learner pools. • A sports hall with space for five badminton courts. • A larger changing village with more lockers. • A larger park-facing gym with 160 stations, compared to the current 64, and three studios. • A steam room and sauna. • A crèche with an outside area. • A café that can be accessed by park-only users as well as visitors to the leisure centre. Arts centre • A theatre for more than 500 people with partly retractable seating to provide for greater flexibility. • Three multi-purpose function rooms. • A performance space. • A cultural and heritage exhibition space. • Two bars and refreshment area. • A ramped entrance with views of the park.
6
Additional parking is also being planned alongside the leisure centre to cater for visitors to the new facilities and the town centre. This will be surrounded by trees and bushes to mask the view from the park. Cllr Annie Brewster, Portfolio Holder for Sports, Leisure and Heritage at St Albans City and District Council, said:“I want to thank everyone who has participated in the community consultation and provided us with valuable insights to help shape the designs for these great new facilities. We are using the feedback to develop detailed designs for the planning application due to be submitted in October. There will be a separate consultation on these designs as part of the planning process later this year.” The agenda and papers for the meeting are available on the Council’s website as well as the webcast. Upgrading leisure, arts and cultural facilities across the District is a key priority for the Council. In the last five years, the Council has opened Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, re-built Batchwood Sports Centre following a fire, and built the new Cotlandswick Sports Centre. More information about the planned redevelopment of leisure, arts and cultural facilities for Harpenden is available at: www.stalbans.gov.uk

THE FINER POINTS OF ‘RIGHTSIZING’ Recent studies have shown that over 50% of all home owners who are over 55 are keen to downsize -or ‘rightsize’- and 1 in 3 are considering such a move in the future; that’s 4.7million people across the nation. The top three driving factors are:
• 1 - Property Maintenance Concerns • 2 - Reduction in household bills • 3 - Extra underutilised space after children have grown up and left home.
Many home owners approaching retirement are struggling to find suitable accommodation which meets their needs for the onward move. As our population as a nation ages, the need for greater options for those aged 55 to 75 and over are increasing yet the demand is not being met. Indeed, those over 75 are 50% less likely to consider a move due to various factors, the principle issue being the upheaval and management involved in such an undertaking.

As local property experts with a personal touch, we have innovated to provide a new service to manage your move from start to finish, including the often daunting task of de-cluttering and handling the loose ends during a move through our unique Professional Move Management service, where everything is handled on your behalf. GOOD CALL! Despite several high-profile campaigns and the government raising the fine of being caught to £200, some motorists persist in calling and texting while on the road. You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted. This includes if you’re using devices like your sat nav or car radio. It’s illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving, or riding a motorcycle. The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver or rider.
When you can use a phone in your vehicle If you’re the driver, you can only use your phone in a vehicle if you: • need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop • are safely parked Penalties for using your phone while driving You could get 6 penalty points on your licence and a fine of £200. Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving or riding and get a maximum fine of £1,000. Drivers of buses or goods vehicles could get a maximum fine of £2,500.

FINANCE FOR FOUR COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Four new community projects in the St Albans District are to be funded in part by contributions from property developers.
The money comes from Section 106 (S106) planning obligations. These are payments made by developers in recognition that a rise in population caused by new homes leads to more demand for community infrastructure.
Around £35,000 will go towards improvements to the Colney Heath section of the Alban Way cycling and walking trail. These include the restoration of the historic Smallford rail station ticket office, new interpretation boards and improved access routes.
Details of the S106 contributions were given to a meeting of St Albans City and District Council’s Cabinet on in March.
Two more play areas are to be revamped with £29,000 going to Marquis Lane in Harpenden East and £2,500 to Camp, in the Cunningham ward of St Albans. Jersey Farm Woodland Park, in Marshalswick North, St Albans, has been awarded £1,000 for leaflet holders to be installed at key locations.
Among other schemes to benefit are the transformation of the Town Hall into a new Museum and Art Gallery and the creation of a new leisure centre in Harpenden. Decisions are yet to be taken over the allocation of S106 sums in several of the Council’s wards. St Peters has £122,000 to spend, London Colney has almost £85,000 and Wheathampstead has £20,000.

FINANCE FOR FOUR COMMUNITY PROJECTS Continued
Council officers work with District and Parish Councillors for these wards to identify suitable community projects. Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “S106 money is making a substantial difference to communities throughout the District. “These four new projects, including major work on the Alban Way, are further proof of that. “We are intent on making the best possible use of this money by working with the local Councillors who know their areas.”

COMMUNITY USE DEFIBRILLATOR The Town Council has installed a new defibrillator on the external wall of Park Hall, Leyton Road to be used by the community in an event of an emergency. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it’s an essential lifesaving step in the chain of survival. The device analyses and looks for a heart rhythm, advises the person using the machine of the need for defibrillation and delivers a shock if needed. It applies a brief pulse of electric current allowing the heart’s normal electrical system to resume normal control.
The defibrillator is located within a locked cabinet on the wall of Park Hall facing Busy Bees Day Nursery. Instructions are on the cabinet explaining a code will be provided when the person needing to access the defibrillator calls 999. The responder will give a code and an ambulance is called at the same time. The defibrillator is easy to use and does not require any training. It is an automated device that talks to the user and diagrams are used to visually aid them in using it. There is no 100% guarantee that this defibrillator will save the person’s life but it significantly increases their chances compared to manual CPR If you are passing the Town Council , keep an eye out for it, so you know where it is if its needed!

PAY-TO-STAY CHANGES STOPPED Pay-to-Stay – a proposal to increase local authority housing rents for higher earners – will not be implemented by St Albans City and District Council.
Councillor Brian Ellis, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “There are a lot of changes to Government housing policy and we need to keep on top of them.
Tenants across the country could face the rise from April this year if their household is earning in excess of £31,000-a-year.
“We are dealing with a range of issues such as payto-stay, the sale of high value houses, the shortage of affordable homes and new guidelines for tenancy agreements.
However, the Council has now decided not to introduce the policy in the District following a Government announcement that it is nonmandatory. The decision was revealed in a report on housing and planning issues due to be given to a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet on Thursday 16 March. This update follows the publication of a Government White Paper on Housing as well as last year’s Housing and Planning Act. In other developments, the Council continues to lobby the Government about plans to enforce the sale of high-value local authority homes. It wants an assurance that it can retain enough money from any sales to replace the properties that are sold. The Council is also reviewing its approach to fixed term tenancies in light of new regulations and guidance expected from the Department for Communities and Local Government. For example, it is expected that Councils will be allowed to offer fixed term tenancies of up to ten years to families with school-age children. This is beyond the normal terms of two to five years. Long-term tenancies could also be offered to households where there is someone with a disability or long-term illness, older people, and those providing long-term care. 30
“We are determined to rise to the challenge and look after the interests of people in the St Albans District.”

ST ALBANS CHRISTMAS MARKET REVIEW
The performance of the St Albans Christmas Market came under the spotlight in a review by councillors from St Albans City and District Council in early March.
The market attracted a record number of visitors last Christmas of 118,000, according to a report presented to the Council’s Community, Environment and Leisure Scrutiny Committee. Of these, 67% came from outside St Albans, according to a survey by tourism students from the University of Bedfordshire. Committee members acknowledged that the event was valued by many in the community and that it was bringing in visitors from outside the District. Some councillors expressed concern about the on-going cost to the Council of running the event which is hoped will produce an income stream in the long term. Figures in the report show there was a deficit of £53,072 for 2016/17, compared to £45,503 for 2015/16, £57,449 for 2014/15 and £79,455 when the market launched in 2013/14. In particular, members were concerned about a downwards trend in income due to a decline in the number of chalets let.
The Council’s Head of Commercial Development said that Winchester’s Christmas Market, one of the most popular in the south east, took eight years to make a profit.
Overall, members felt that the deficit was acceptable provided the market attracted visitors from outside the District who also spent money elsewhere in the City centre. They said further research was needed to quantify how much visitors were spending in St Albans’ shops and restaurants. The Committee recommended that a working party of councillors and officers should be set up to help develop future Christmas Markets. It was also suggested that this could include business and community representatives. The meeting was webcast and can be watched on the Council’s website. The agenda and papers for the meeting are available online at:

IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK FOR SOMEONE TO DRUG YOUR DRINK! You may not even taste it once it is in your drink because alcohol may disguise the taste of the drug!
Watch your drinks and don’t accept drinks from strangers is the message from the St Albans Neighbourhood Team after two women have reported feeling unwell and suspect their drinks may have been spiked in St Albans. “We also want to remind people to stay within their limits when they are out drinking and to stay with their friends. Always plan how you are going to get home before you leave for your night out and don’t leave yourself vulnerable by becoming excessively intoxicated.”
Officers are working with the local pubs to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive drinking and potential drink spiking.

“OUR DAUGHTER WOULD NOT BE WHERE SHE IS TODAY WITHOUT ALL THE INPUT AND HARD WORK FROM THE SCHOOL TEAM AT ST HILDA’S.” These words came from a parent whose daughter has just left the much-respected Harpenden girls school and started her senior school journey recently. She wrote to express her thanks for all that St Hilda’s has meant, an often repeated story down the years.
St Hilda’s is renowned for the confidence it inspires in its girls. For 125 years now the School has been providing a first-class educational experience for pupils. The School’s overarching aim is to achieve the highest standard of education in a happy, safe and purposeful working environment, instilling in all pupils a love of learning. The School’s banner heading is ‘nurturing the individual’, which can be defined as encouraging each girl to fulfil their potential to the full. This has been borne out in the fantastic results achieved by our leavers this year, who have amassed an outstanding 16 scholarships and awards between them in sport, drama, art and music, including 5 academic scholarships to Haberdashers’ Aske’s, St Albans High School for Girls, Godolphin and Latymer, Abbot’s Hill and Haileybury.
Recently, we welcomed back some old girls who left several years ago. In their final year they had performed their play,‘What a Knight’, a parody on King Arthur and the knights of the round table, and came back to see it again being staged this year. In the intervening years, the School has undergone a transformation in so many ways, not least the 3 storey extension which has enabled the provision of upgraded and spacious facilities. The girls hardly recognised the school building they had occupied. 46
The top floor of the building has undergone a further transformation in 2016 with the provision of a fabulous Performing Arts room, which was officially opened and named ‘The Seagull Studio’ by Town Mayor Nicola Linacre. This has allowed the girls to widen their already diverse creative talents, including a performance almost immediately after the opening of an original setting of Macbeth. Art and music are also very strong. We held our own exhibition last autumn with a ‘Go Blue’ theme in aid of Diabetes UK. Concerts and recitals, together with a new innovative competition in public-speaking, enabling the girls to grow in confidence and helping them to leave the School fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
The School was inspected in November 2016 by ISI and was deemed ‘compliant in all areas’. The inspectorate commented that ‘there is evidence of good teaching everywhere’ and that ‘the pupils are eager learners and their behaviour is impeccable.’ A touching comment by one of the girls interviewed by the Reporting Inspector occurred when she was asked “What is the worst thing about St Hilda’s?” to which the girl replied “Going home!”
Come and see for yourself what this outstanding School has to offer.

A fresh approach to helping people get onto the Internet
Did you know that 37% of people aged 55+ own a tablet? This is an increase from only 1% in 2011. Computer Friendly is responding to this by putting tablets at the heart of its starter courses. Local charity Computer Friendly, who have been helping adults in the district get onto the Internet since 2002, has seen evidence of this trend firsthand. John Talbot, Computer Friendly chairman said “More of our students want Apple iPad and Android tablet courses now and we less demand for traditional computer courses.” Tablets are less daunting to those new to computing. They can be more intuitive to use and many find that the touchscreen is easier to use than a mouse/keyboard. Why is being online so important? There are huge social and health benefits to being online. Many can’t get out and about, yet we know this social interaction is vital for our well-being. Tablets give us the ability to easily keep in touch with our families irrespective of where we are. 51
How can Computer Friendly help? Computer Friendly run ‘Taste of the Internet’ sessions for those wanting to understand it all, and courses for those who have a tablet or computer and would like help to get started. These ‘Starting off with’ courses only cost £20 for four or five weeks and suit iPhone/Android smartphones as well. And our course workbooks are a vital part of each course. “What hasn’t changed is our absolute commitment to how we teach” says John. “Our big difference is that our tutors and helpers are all volunteers with lots of patience - we teach because we love to.” Want to know more about Computer Friendly?

GOING ON HOLIDAY?
Whether you choose to take your pet on holiday with you or leave your pet in the care of a responsible person, consideration should always be given to your pet’s welfare. Under the Animal Welfare Act you have a legal responsibility to ensure their welfare and to provide for your pet’s needs as does any person whom you choose to leave them with. Taking your pet on holiday - Things to consider • Many animals can find the change in routine and environment and the experience of travelling very stressful. Carefully consider if taking your pet on holiday with you is the best thing for them. It may be better to leave your pet in the care of a responsible person whilst you are away. • Always make sure that your chosen holiday destination has all the facilities necessary for your pet’s requirements. • Check with your vet that your pet is healthy and safe to travel. If your pet requires medication, but is safe to travel, make sure you take this with you. Always make sure that your pet is fully vaccinated, and has had up-to-date flea and worming treatments. • Make sure that your pet wears a collar with an identity tag with your name and holiday address & contact details on, so if they get lost you can be reunited as quickly as possible. Taking your pet abroad There are certain rules that you must follow when taking a dog, cat or ferret abroad. The rules depend on the country you’re going to or coming from. For more information call Pet Travel Scheme helpline on 0870 241 1710. 52
Your pet(s) could be exposed to diseases and health risks that we do not have in the UK. Therefore your pet will need to be vaccinated against other diseases, including rabies. Ask your vet for advice. Information on exotic diseases in cats and dogs can be found on the Defra Dog and Cat Travel website www.defra.gov.uk . Further information on diseases your pet may encounter abroad can be found in the Animal Welfare Foundation website www.bva-awf.org.uk Transporting your pet For information on the different methods of transporting your pet and how you can help them to have a safe, stress-free journey, please visit www.rspca.org.uk Keeping pets safe while you’re away There are a number of options to ensure your pet is cared for when you are away. You can: • Ask friends and family to look after them • Have a pet-sitter • Take them to a boarding establishment.
Make sure you enjoy your holiday along with your pets!

Park Street & Frogmore Society presents - Mills & Watermills by Hugh Howes. PSFS AGM. This fascinating talk is based on Hughs’ recently published book Wind, Water and Steam The Story of Hertfordshire’s Mills.Hertfordshire has an unusually rich and diverse milling heritage. As well as its long tradition of corn milling, the county once enjoyed a reputation for the milling of a variety of other products, including pioneering papermaking in the west of the county, gunpowder and small arms in the east, and also silk and cotton. There are records of 110 watermills and 71 windmills in Hertfordshire but little physical evidence of many of them remains today. In discussing the social and economic history of the different varieties of milling in the county, Hugh focuses on key advances in technology, and the opportunities brought about by improved transport. The degree to which individual millers were able adapt to these changes determined whether or not they survived. Copies of Hugh’s book will be available on the evening to purchase. Our open meetings take place at Park Street Village Hall, off the A5183, Park Street, St Albans, Herts AL2 2PX. Limited parking is available outside the hall. St Albans Clock Tower Built between 1403 & 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. It was first & foremost a political statement; the townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of St Albans’ Abbey. The Tower’s bell, which has survived over 600 years of use, allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the Curfew. It also gave the alarm in case of “fire or fray”. Its bell rang out the first Battle of St. Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today you can climb to the top of the Tower & enjoy magnificent views of St Albans & the surrounding countryside. Disabled access is difficult as there is a restricted entrance and 93 narrow steps to the top. Explore the town’s fascinating past with Harpenden & District Local History Society Town Trail No. 2 Starting at 2 Southdown Road behind the Harpenden Arms and returning to Yew Tree Farm (Prezzo restaurant)
Ever wondered about Harpenden in days of yore? Harpenden is a thriving town, but to older residents it remains ‘the village’. Many of the buildings and other landmarks from that earlier era are still with us, though their history is sometimes not readily apparent. Other important features from the past are now only memories, but the Society seeks to keep these alive, by bringing Harpenden’s heritage to a wider audience. In the Society’s archive collection are many thousands of historical pictures, books, maps and other fascinating documents and artefacts. The History Centre at Park Hall is open on Tuesday afternoons, and otherwise by arrangement, for academic study as well as for anyone wanting to browse and know more about the gradual evolution of the area and it’s community through past decades, and indeed centuries, to the present day. Supported by Harpenden Town Council, St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and with the co-operation of the Harpenden Society, the Local History Society plays a vital role in giving Harpenden its unique identity within Hertfordshire.

1. The George is first mentioned in 1507, but maybe not on this site. It was rebuilt in C19 and is seen here in the 1930s. The site of the garage to the south (now Pizza Express) was a tea garden in Victorian times, when parties drove in by wagonette for ‘Beanfeasts’ and dancing on the lawn. 2. Kingston House, No. 6 High Street was built in 1912 as Edgar Salisbury’s hardware shop on the site of Dr Kingston’s house. Later occupants were Halford’s, C&A stores and M&Co. Note the shields above the windows marking Industry, Strength, Goodwill and Service; also the Harpenden and Hertfordshire coats of arms. 3. TheWhite Lion at No. 28 High Street was a small Victorian pub, with decorative moulded bricks. The Perfect Pizza sign hangs from a bracket which once supported a model of a white lion, see left. 4. The Old Cock Inn has traces of a C17 timber-framed building and is more than likely the site of still earlier hostelries.
2. 72 High St - Another much altered C17 timber-frame structure lies behind the brick façade. It is believed to have formed part of an even earlier & larger group of hostelry buildings. It was the Old Red Lion in the early 1900s, and Rolts cycle & pram shop in the 1960s, until it was refurbished as shops in 1976. 8258

6. 73-75 High Street, at the corner of Sun Lane. A late C17 timber-framed structure, the end of which was demolished to widen Sun Lane in 1931. The remaining section was converted into shops in July 1955. The Sun pub was here from about 1637 until 1800 (or maybe 1877). It was owned by the Hawkins family in the 1780s. 7. 65-69 High Street. The C17 timber-framed cottages at 67 (The Limes) and 65, had early C18 wallpaintings imitating panelling, which were destroyed when the building was refurbished in the 1970s. In the 1850s No. 65 was Harpenden’s first post office. No. 69 (Tollgate Cottage/Hotel) was added in the 1870s.‘Tollgate’ refers to the barrier controlling traffic from Luton, just south of Sun Lane, when the Turnpike Trust was formed in 1743. 8. The Foresters Arms, a pub which has given its name to the 2012 housing development behind, became an off-licence, before conversion into an estate agency. The Foresters were a self-help charity founded in the early C19. 9. Bowers Parade was built in 1936 in the gardens of Bowers House, which still stands behind. Though a handsome parade, the fact that it concealed Bowers House was highly controversial at the time, which helped give birth to the Harpenden Society. 10. Cross Keys pub - formerly the White Hart.A much altered early C18 building. The innkeeper in 1830 was Henry Oldaker who moved to The Bull (The Old House, Leyton Road) and helped start regular horse racing on the Common in 1848. 60
11. Brewery House - built in 1871 as his home by James Mardall, who owned the Peacock Brewery (on the site of the Methodist Church), one of two breweries then in the High Street. In 1951 the house was sold and converted to shops (currently Harpenden Interiors and WH Smiths). 12. Vaughan Road was cut through in the 1890s, following the demolition of cottages in Lower High Street, with Pellants (clock makers/repairers) at the corner. Willmott’s grocery was replaced by the County & Westminster Bank (now NatWest).
13. Home Farm and Chestnut Cottage were pulled down in 1894 to build Ridley’s ironmongers’ shop at the Corner of Station Road (formerly Staker’s Lane) - now HSBC. 14. Harpenden Arms Hotel built as the Railway Hotel in 1870 by James Mardall (owner of the Peacock Brewery), the landlord in 1890 was Richard Longland, a wine and spirit dealer, corn and hay merchant, and proprietor of the Livery Stables behind the hotel further up Station Road. 85 61

INVISIBLE AESTHETICS® ONLY AT
RIVERBANKS WELLNESS & ANTIAGEING CLINIC At Riverbanks we have a global reputation for excellence - thats a pretty big statement! But its, true as our medical director, Dr Ravi Jain, is frequently invited to share his expertise to aesthetic doctors and nurses all over the world. His principle of Invisible Aesthetics® was built on the principle that nobody should see your treatments they just think you look well. Since opening in 2008, Riverbanks Wellness & AntiAgeing Clinic has become synonymous with honest & trustworthy expert medical advice and aesthetic treatments, with injectable treatments such as Botox and Dermal Fillers only provided by Aesthetic Doctors. We have been serving the local communities around Harpenden for 10 years respecting our patients desire or discretion and privacy and also subtle, natural looking results. We find that our patients value our affable approach and relaxed environment. In our beautiful surroundings just outside Harpenden in East Hyde on the Lower Luton Road, you can park your car in our large car park and rest knowing that your secret is safe with us! During your initial consultation with one of our doctors, you will be carefully listened to, so that a treatment plan can be devised with you, to meet your concerns. This is critical for natural looking results. Ironically, sometimes more treatments are required to provide natural results - in fact, most of the obvious work you may see, has come from inexperienced use of treatments in the wrong places! Our medical team of 4 doctors is led by our founder Dr Ravi Jain who was a former local GP for 7 years before opening up Riverbanks. His children go to school locally, and so it is very important that his work & reputation are always thought of in the highest regard. 86
It is this ethos that is the blood of Riverbanks. We promise that we will always be truthful, we will always do our best for you and we will always listen to you. We have an open door policy in the event of you having any concerns with your treatment. Often, simple reassurance after a quick checkup is all that is required. We offer a wide range of treatments from the most reputable brands around the world. One of the many benefits of having Dr Jain as our medical director is that he frequently travels the globe sharing his expertise and also gains ideas and skills from other global experts, bringing them to the Riverbanks team to share with our wonderful patients. So from injectable treatments such as botox and fillers, to acne scar removal, to fat reduction (both using gentle liposuction or the noninvasive Coolsculpting), to skin peels, to laser skin rejuvenation, to mole removals, to sweat reduction, to hair thickening treatments, we offer it. Just so long as there is excellent clinical evidence we provide it.
If you’re not sure of a treatment, just give us a call on 01582762877 and we will do our very best to help you.

Three things – believing in myself, positive thinking and a real passion for the industry. I am fortunate that I have found a career that I love and nothing makes me happier than thinking each day work is where I go for pleasure. It brings out my inner strengths and a willingness to succeed. I have taken a few risks since starting the business and the risks have paid off as the business is thriving and I am always learning, leading to continuous improvement. I work with a team who are great communicators and develop a personal relationship with each of our clients to ensure that we fully understand their individual needs. How do you achieve a work/life balance?
I enjoy my work so much that I don't really see a big difference between my work and home life. I really love giving it my all. Having said that everybody needs to find a way to switch off. I do this by taking time out of my busy week to exercise, enjoy family life and I'm really into mindfulness, just 10 minutes leads to less stress and more inner peace. My outside interests make me appreciate what I do. Working with a brilliant team is a route to achieving balance and has certainly worked for me.
Who inspires you the most either in work or at home?
All those women out there who want to improve their appearance. To improve their self confidence and self esteem. Beauty is power!

LOVE YOUR BUMP CAMPAIGN SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARD
A Hertfordshire County Council initiative that encourages pregnant women to give up smoking won a prestigious national award on Wednesday 8 March.
The Love Your Bump campaign scooped the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) award for Campaign of the Year, with the judging panel praising it as “a template for others to follow.” The campaign, launched in 2015, encourages pregnant women and those around them such as partners, family and friends, to quit smoking in order to protect the health of their unborn baby. Alongside a range of publicity materials to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking in pregnancy, the campaign also provides pregnant women and their partners with free access to a stop smoking adviser specially trained in pregnancy issues and free nicotine replacement therapy. According to NHS data, there were 1007 babies born to Hertfordshire mothers who smoke in 2014/15, however the latest data saw this figure drop to 870, with smoking at time of delivery rates falling by 10 per cent in the same period. Deputy Cabinet Member for Public Health, Localism and Libraries, Fiona Hill, said: “This award is fantastic recognition for everyone involved in the Love Your Bump campaign, from our very dedicated Stop Smoking 92
Service that have been involved from the beginning in designing and developing the campaign through to the wide range of partners who have helped us deliver it in the community. “The effect of smoking on both mother and baby can be severe, but together we are making a real difference to families by giving all Hertfordshire babies the best chance of getting off to a happy, healthy start in life and ultimately saving money in the long run.” The campaign was developed with midwives and pregnant smokers to make sure the right messages were communicated in an honest and non-judgemental way. Women wanted to be told the truth about the harm caused by smoking and what would happen once they agreed to receive help. Hertfordshire’s Stop Smoking service provides free, local stop smoking support and advice on treatment options to anyone wanting to give up, and welcomes those wanting to give up through e-cigarettes. The service promises not to judge pregnant women if they are struggling to quit, but to support them and their partners for as long as they need help.

Homes
HERTFORDSHIRE RESIDENTS ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO TEST THEIR SMOKE ALARMS. It only takes a moment and by pushing the ‘test’ button on every smoke alarm in your home, you could save the lives of your loved ones.”
A working smoke alarm can buy you and your family the valuable time you need to get out, stay out and call 999. Hertfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is determined to prevent as many deaths as possible and is encouraging people to test their alarms. Roy Wilsher, Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection said: “Fortunately deaths from house fires in Hertfordshire are rare. You’re four times more likely to survive a fire if you have a working smoke alarm.
Richard Thake, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Planning, said: “Last year more than 200 people in England died in fires in the home. If you have an older relative who finds it hard to reach their smoke alarms, this is the perfect opportunity to take the time to visit and test them. “Everyone soon notices when a clock stops ticking, but you might not realise if your smoke alarm isn’t in working order. Whether the battery is flat, has been used for something else or the connection is loose, please take the time to test.”

TIME TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR WARDROBE! In the UK we spend on average £1,800 each year on clothes and the average household has £4000 worth of clothes – (30% of those haven’t been worn in the last year.) More than 30% of our clothing goes to landfill, with nearly half of us putting some clothing in the bin; all clothing can either be re-used or recycled. If clothing is in good condition but is no longer of use to you, you could: • Pass it on, exchange or share unwanted clothes with friends and family. • Unwanted clothing has a value; why not sell them online, at a car boot sale or via Cash for Clothes • Donate clothing to charity shops or through collection services offered by charities, local councils, retailers and other organisations. • If you are fundraising for your school, church, workplace, sports club or organisations such as Girl Guides, or Scouts, there are textile companies who can arrange a textile collection to help you to raise money for your cause. Clothing that isn’t in good enough condition to be reused can be recycled into other things. There are various recycling points in the local area situated car parks and at local supermarkets. It’s time to get sorting!

WHAT IS VAMPIRE ENERGY? Vampire Energy is the energy used by household appliances when they are left on standby or plugged in but not in use. These appliances slowly suck energy and cost the average household an extra £50-80 a year on energy bills (www.growourherts.co.uk). This only occurs because some devices claimed to be “switched off” on the electronic interface, but are in a different state from switching off at the plug, or disconnecting from the power point, which can solve the problem of standby power completely. In fact, switching off at the power point is effective enough, there is no need to disconnect all devices from the power point. In the past, standby power was largely a non-issue for users, electricity providers, manufacturers, and government regulators. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, awareness of the issue grew and it became an important consideration for all parties. Up to the middle of the decade, standby power was often several watts or even tens of watts per appliance. By 2010, regulations were in place in most developed countries restricting standby power of devices sold to one watt and half that from 2013. Turning power off to appliances will save energy and reduce fire risk.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 23rd – 27th May 2017
The 2017 show will be as exciting as ever and plans are already gathering momentum to ensure it not to be missed. For more information about the show please visit www. rhs.org.uk Here are some things you might not know about the world’s most famous flower show… • The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society which was founded in 1804. • The Show has been held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea since 1913. • The first RHS Chelsea Flower Show was staged in a single large tent.
• The first RHS Chelsea Flower Show was officially called ‘The Great Spring Show’, however the name ‘The Chelsea Flower Show’ quickly caught on. • The first Show consisted of a total of 244 exhibitors, under half of what you would find today. • The first RHS Chelsea cost the RHS £3,365 to stage and made a profit of £88 (£150,000 and £4,000 respectively in today’s money). The profits were distributed to gardening charities. • Japanese dwarf trees, now known as bonsai, were first seen at the first Show in 1913. • Despite the First World War, the Show was held in 1914 – 1916, but cancelled in 1917. • In 1927 there was a campaign to get the RHS to ban foreign exhibits from RHS Chelsea to reduce competition with British firms. The RHS refused saying, ‘horticulture knows nothing of nationality.’

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 23rd – 27th May 2017 Continued
• In 1932 the rain at the Show was so severe that a summer house display fell to pieces.
STUMPED FOR MARKETING IDEAS? CALL:
• One very wet year an exhibitor named it ‘The Chelsea Shower Flow’. • RHS Chelsea was cancelled during the Second World War, and the site of the show was used by the War Office to station antiaircraft guns. • In 1947, to help fill the space left by exhibitors still recovering from the War, a portion of the marquee was devoted to flower arrangements for the first time. Flower arranging became a regular feature. In 1956 it was allocated its own separate tent.

MAKE YOUR CAR SPARKLE THIS SPRING • Always wash your car in the shade! This will keep your car wash shampoo from drying on the car before it is rinsed off. • Use two buckets; one is for your shampoo solution and the other is clean rinse water. • Fill a 5-gallon bucket 2/3 full with cool water. Add the proper amount of shampoo to the water as recommended on the label instructions. Using a strong jet of water, fill the bucket to fully activate suds. Fill the second bucket with clean, water for rinsing. • Thoroughly rinse the vehicle’s surface to remove the loose dirt and grime before you begin. • When washing your vehicle remember to always go from top to bottom, never the opposite. Generally the dirtiest parts of your vehicle are those parts closest to the ground.
128
• Load up your wash cloth with your car wash solution and wring it out over the wash surface. This acts like a pre-soak and helps loosen surface dirt. • Keep your wash areas small and rinse your wash cloth frequently in the second bucket. • Wash in straight, overlapping lines as opposed to circles and remember to be gentle. • Rinse your vehicle with clean water. • When you dry your car gently dry the surface without much pressure. You don’t need to rub the surface – you’re just picking up the bulk of the water! Once you have picked up the bulk of the water, & the first towel is saturated, use a second towel to lightly pick up any remaining streaks or droplets.
