HIGHLAND GATHERING Harpenden Lions’ Highland Gathering will be held on Sunday 10th July in  Rothamsted Park, Harpenden; the event will run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Harpenden Lions’ Highland Gathering is a great day out with a ‘Scottish flavour’. It offers a taste of Scotland with pipe and drum bands, solo piping and highland dancing competitions and displays.This year there will be a record 7 pipe bands competing at the gathering; one is coming all the way from Truro. Visitors can also watch one of the shows or the traditional highland games (including ‘weight over the bar’, ‘tossing the caber’ and ‘putting the stone’.) There are also plenty of amusements for children -including a funfair, climbing wall, rugby and golf challenges, the popular Kids’ Circle for younger children, opportunities to make sand art pictures and to use a potters’ wheel, face painting and electric Go-karts. And as if that wasn’t enough there will be lots of food and drink to enjoy and a variety of items to buy; there is even a ‘Scot’s Corner’ selling Scottish fine food, clothing and crafts. Last year, as a result of the Highland Gathering event, the Bone Cancer Trust benefited from a £4500 donation, the Luton and Dunstable Charitable fund £4500 and HLC life skills £2500. This years’ charities are: Diabetes Advice and Support Hertfordshire (DASH) and the PSP Association.

CAR PARKING CHANGES

A new tariff for on-street car parking is to be introduced to help businesses in the St Albans District. Motorists will be able to pay 60p to park for half-an-hour in two-hour bays close to the main shopping centres. At the moment, they have to pay double that charge for a minimum one-hour stay. The same half-hour tariff will also be tested out on one-hour bays for a six-month trial period.

The one-hour on-street tariff will rise by 10p to £1.30 and the two-hour tariff by 20p to £2.60.

It is intended that the new charge will be of help to people who are making a quick trip to the shops.

These increases are designed to ease traffic congestion caused by motorists looking for onstreet parking.

A higher turnover of visitors using the convenient spaces should also boost the trade of retailers and other businesses like estate agents.

The changes came into force on Monday 4th April, five years after the last on-street tariff review and increase. The cost of residents and business permits for controlled parking zones is to rise by 2% from the same date.This is less than £1 in most cases. For example, a Type B resident’s annual permit in St Albans for a street with all-day restrictions rises from £38.76 to £39.54 for the first car. In Harpenden, the cost of a first car permit increases from £30.60 to £31.20. There are also similar increases of around 2% for visitor and work permits, bay suspensions and parking vouchers. Last year, major enhancements were made to the main City Centre car parks to encourage greater use. More than £300,000 was invested in improvements including new state-of-the-art payment machines and entry/exit barriers. In excess of £70,000 was spent on new pay-anddisplay machines at on-street parking bays.

THE 2016 FLAMSTEAD SCARECROW FESTIVAL 15 years ago, The Hertfordshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre (HMSTC) with the help of the Friends of St Leonard’s (FOSL) conceived the idea of the Flamstead Scarecrow Festival as a vehicle to raise funds for the 2 charities. This year the dates of the festival are: Friday 16th August - 12pm to 5pm, Saturday 19th August- 10am to 6pm and Sunday 21st August - 10.30am to 5pm. This festival is a Fun, Family Fundraising Event, held in the picturesque village of Flamstead. This highly successful and unusual three-day event grows in popularity each year. It is amazing to see the creativity of the villagers with their amusing and clever scarecrows.

Each year the residents of Flamstead build over 100 scarecrows which are placed around the village; the event attracts about 5000 visitors over the three days. To join in the fun come along, park in the free car park, get a voting form and make your way round the village, listing your favourite scarecrows. Return your completed form to the village hall where there will be various attractions including cream teas & refreshments all weekend; with a Cake Stall, Punch & Judy,

the Wicket Brood on the Saturday;Tombola,Aldbury Morris Men & the Hemel Hempstead Brass Band on the Sunday.A Care Bus is laid on to take anyone unable to walk, around the festival, & a free car park plus bus ride to the village is provided for people attending. There is also a painting exhibition all weekend in St. Leonard’s Church. Over the last 14 years the Scarecrow committee, which includes representatives from both charities, as well as volunteers from the village have worked tirelessly to ensure that each year has been a success. ST ALBANS HAS A NEW MAYOR After working in north London, Cllr Leonard moved to St Albans in 1974 following her marriage and has held a number of jobs in the area. She has worked at Harperbury Hospital, Hemel Hempstead General Hospital and at Spire Harpenden Hospital where she manages the pharmacy department. She was also a committee member of the local branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for 25 years.

Councillor Frances Leonard has become the Mayor of St Albans City and District for the next year. She was elected to the post at a meeting of the full Council on Wednesday 25th May with Cllr Gill Clark continuing as Deputy Mayor. Cllr Leonard, the 473rd Mayor of the City, said; “It’s a great honour to be elected Mayor. I am looking forward to representing the Council and highlighting the work that it does.

In her spare time, she has been a bell ringer at St Albans Abbey. She has also supported a number of causes, including the Stroke Association and breast cancer charities, with sponsored bike rides and runs. Cllr Leonard enjoys taking part in environmental projects in her ward and helps to organise the annual Rose Walk Big Lunch street party. Deputy Mayor Cllr Gill Clark first became a District Councillor for Wheathampstead ward in 1999, serving until 2004. After a four-year break, she was elected again to the Council in 2008.

”Most of all, I am keen to meet and support the many volunteers, charities and community groups that do such important work for the St Albans District.” The Mayor’s Consort will be her husband Dr Graham Leonard and her charity will be Herts Young Homeless. Cllr Leonard, who takes over from Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, became a District Councillor when she was elected for the Sandridge Ward nine years ago. The daughter of a postwoman and quarry worker, she grew up in Warwickshire and was the first member of her family to go to University. She studied pharmacy at the University of London where she met her husband. The couple have a son and daughter and two granddaughters. 14

MAYOR VISITS CRUCIAL CREW

School pupils from the St Albans District were joined by the Mayor as they were shown how to deal with threats to their safety. Councillor Salih Gaygusuz, Mayor of St Albans City and District, visited the annual Crucial Crew event to experience the training sessions at first hand. Eight hundred children Year Six children aged ten and eleven, from 19 primary schools learned about cyber bullying, illegal drugs, roads, alcohol and other issues. They were taught how to assess everyday risks and take action to avoid them.

There were also sessions on first aid, antisocial behaviour and the work of the Samaritans, a charity that gives support to people in emotional distress. The educational course, held at the Fire Station in London Road, St Albans, is now in its fourth year. It was organised by the St Albans City and District Community Safety Partnership & spread over 2 weeks. Participants included staff from St Albans City and District Council, Hertfordshire Police, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Hertfordshire County Council and leisure centre operators 1Life. Students from Oaklands further education college helped out. Councillor Gaygusuz said: “Crucial Crew is a fantastic event that has helped hundreds of children cope with the many dangers that they face in the modern world. “I was delighted to meet so many bright and enthusiastic young people who were very keen to learn about the world around them. “I was also able to talk to the Crucial Crew staff that protect our community and were doing a marvellous job in educating these school students about the risks they have to deal with. “This is an excellent initiative that makes the District a safer place and I was proud to be able to support it.”

MUSEUM DONORS TO GET SPECIAL REWARD In excess of £40,000 has been raised in the first weeks of an appeal that gives people a unique chance to write their name into St Albans’ history.

Other sponsorship packages and naming opportunities are available for both individuals and companies. The amounts range from £500 to £250,000 & offer highprofile involvement.

Richard Shwe, the Council’s Head of the Council’s Community Services, said: “There are a number of ways to have your name or a company name attached to this amazing project.

The magnificent oak panels are part of a £7.75 million project to convert the Town Hall into a stateof-the art museum and exhibition space. They will be etched with the names of donors and hung from the walls of a Benefactors’ Walk of Fame.

“The new Museum & Art Gallery will be a huge visitor attraction for individuals, families, schools and tourists. It will be a great venue to meet people, to learn and to hold corporate events.”

This corridor will form one of the building’s major walkways, connecting the new Basement Gallery and the Georgian prison cells.

The old Town Hall, a Grade II* Listed building, dates from 1831 and is one of the most prominent features of the City’s Conservation Area.

For a £250 gift, your name or that of someone close to you will be carved into the boards which will be seen by thousands of visitors. The idea was inspired by the courtroom’s wooden walls and graffiti left by prisoners.

Converting it into a museum and art gallery will rejuvenate the cultural life of the District. It is scheduled to open in the autumn of next year with building work due to start this summer.

A professional artist will arrange the names using different typefaces and font sizes to create an eyecatching design. The appeal was launched only last month under the slogan – “Become part of the St Albans story”. Already, residents or people with a St Albans connection have donated more than £40,000 through this appeal. Many donations have been made in memory of loved ones or as gifts to children and grandchildren. Mike Gray, chairman of the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, said: “There has been an outstanding response to the oak panel boards which have really captured people’s imagination. “It is a fantastic way of rewarding people for giving some financial support to this historic project. “There are a limited number of boards, so people who are interested should waste no time in getting in touch with our fund-raising team. “People want to be associated with this project which will transform the City Centre and create a truly landmark building.” 20

Spread over three floors, the Museum and Art Gallery will stage a dynamic programme of historical and contemporary art exhibitions all year round. The overall cost will be £7.75 million with the Council committed to providing funding of £3.25 million. Much of that sum will come from the redevelopment of the former museum site in Hatfield Road. Planning permission to build ten homes on the site was given earlier this month by the Council’s Planning Referrals Committee. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded grants totalling £2.8 million. St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, registered charity number 1051868, has led efforts to raise the balance of the fund. It has raised around £350,000 to date and is looking for a further £1.35 million. Investors in People (IiP) has awarded St Albans City and District Council a prized Gold award for the way it leads, supports and manages its staff.

Only one out of ten organisations which attain IiP accreditation gain this highlycoveted status. IiP investigated the Council’s leadership skills, services and commitment to making improvements. An inspector visited the Council’s offices and, during the performance assessment, selected a range of staff to talk to, in confidence, about their experiences. IiP, a publicly-funded body, was formed 25 years ago. In the UK and internationally, there are currently 14,000 accredited organisations. Its gold standard is intended to be “the sign of a great employer, an outperforming place to work and a clear

commitment to sustainability”.

PLANS TO RESTORE THE RIVER VER A scheme to improve the water quality, flow and habitat of the River Ver in St Albans is to be examined and costed. Its aim is to return the river to a healthier, more natural state from Verulamium Park to the Sopwell Nunnery. The Ver is a chalk stream, an internationally- rare river type which derives most of its water from the underlying chalk bed. The scheme will look to restore its original characteristics including crystal clear water, a clean gravel bed and strong flows. It will also improve the aquatic environment to support a wide range of birds, plants, animals and fish such as water vole, brown trout and kingfishers. The Ver currently flows through Verulamium Park along a straight, man-made channel elevated above the bottom of the valley on which it would naturally flow.As a result, it is sluggish, the bed is heavily silted and the surrounding habitat is of poor quality. The Environment Agency will fund a feasibility study into the scheme and is working with Affinity Water and park owners, St Albans City and District Council. The study will assess what options there are, the likely impacts and the costs involved. It could eventually result in the river taking a different, meandering course through the park and the area around the Sopwell allotments. The long-term aim is to achieve Good Ecological Status under the European Water Framework Directive. Nancy Young, the Environment Agency’s Colne Biodiversity Officer said: “This is a very exciting project that has the potential to significantly improve the River Ver for both wildlife and people. “The scope of the project will consider sustainability, amenity, flood risk and ecology. “We look forward to working with St Albans City and District Council, Affinity Water and other key interest groups to ensure we get the best possible outcomes.” Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “I am committed to improving the quality of the lakes for both visitors and wildlife. 24

“I have been working on this with the Environment Agency and Affinity Water as the lakes are integral to any river environment improvement scheme. “The Council does not have the resources to solve this longstanding problem on its own, but we are hopeful we can do so with their help. “This is an exciting development, but we will have to look very closely at the cost and the changes it will bring before any decisions can be made. “The feasibility study is a big step along that route. It represents a major commitment towards improving the water quality of the Ver and Verulamium Park.We look forward to working with the community, including the Ver Valley Society, before any scheme is agreed.” Ellie Powers, Senior Asset Manager at Affinity Water, said: “We are committed to reducing the amount of water we take from our underground sources to leave more water for the environment. “We have a dedicated team of specialists who are working towards improving a number of chalk rivers including the Ver. “This project is an example of us working in partnership with local authorities and the Environment Agency to restore the river.” The project could also benefit Verulamium Park’s lakes which have become silted and do not have a self-supporting natural eco-system. Planting is thought to be one way to reduce both the accumulation of silt and a consequent build-up of pollutants. Those conditions were blamed for an outbreak of avian botulism last summer which killed several wild birds. The area around Sopwell allotments has suffered frequently from flooding in the past. One of the reasons for this is that the natural course of the Ver is through the middle of the allotment site. This means that during flood events or high groundwater, the valley bottom floods.

CLASSICS ON THE COMMON 2016

This year’s event will be held on Wednesday 27th July from 2pm – 8pm Since 1994, for one day a year, Harpenden Common hosts what has become the biggest mid-week classic car show in Britain. Whatever the weather, nothing stops most of the pre-registered owners of more than 1200 classic vehicles, motorcycles and scooters from driving to Harpenden from all over the UK to display their cherished vehicles.

When Peter decided to make the 2008 Classics his last he asked Harpenden Village Rotary Club to take over responsibility for organising and running the show.

Up to 10,000 spectators spend hours admiring the mouthwatering collection.

At heart, Classics on the Common remains a community event. Its charity fundraising is significant, too; over the show’s 20+ year span more than £110,000 has been distributed to local, children’s, national and international charities.

A classic vehicle should be at least 20 years old but visitors can usually spot one or two from around a century ago, such as a 1900 Daimler Type A and a 1913 model T Ford. Every decade following is well represented, too, from Rolls Royces and Maseratis to Austin A40s and Morris Minors.

Classic vehicle owners make a donation to enter and, although there is no entry charge to the public, spectators have always responded generously when approached with collecting buckets. Local businesses support, too, by taking banner advertising.

Classics on the Common was the brain-child of classic car enthusiast Peter Madden, a Harpenden resident and Metropolitan Police officer.The first year’s show attracted 125 cars.

The show raised £33,000 for charity in 2015. The main beneficiaries were Spotlight on Africa,Herts Action on Disability, Keech Children’s Hospice and Motor Neurone Disease Association.

FROM PICTURE BOOKS TO CRIME THRILLERS The 8th – 10th July see the 3rd St.Albans Literay Festival in St.Peters Church, St. Albans. The Festival aims to bring together the best local and UK authors in a stimulating, exciting and accessible environment. The festival is a celebration of literature in all its forms, from chick lit and crime fiction through to journalism and poetry, with top names in all fields expected to appear. It is open to everyone and with ticket prices as low as possible the event is run by volunteers for the benefit of the community. Our inaugural festival (in 2014) presented over 40 different events from academic literature, popular fiction, a vibrant children programme and a series of workshops. With over 1600 tickets sold and several drop-in events it started with a bang and we hope to build on this success going forwards.

In contrast to 2014, next year’s festival will be mainly based at St Peter’s Church, with talks and workshops in different sections of the building and also in the churchyard (taking advantage of the storyteller’s circle opened there during the festival in the summer of 2014.) The festival will be running from Friday July 8th through to Sunday July 10th, with a programme of exciting activities aimed at appealing to both adults and children. It is likely that there will also be a fringe programme of activities which expands either side of the main festival dates. The St Albans Literary Festival is managed by festival directors Matt Adams, Claire Walsh and James Cameron who lead a team of volunteers.

She has also long campaigned on Palestinian issues, visiting the region, lobbying, organising meetings and collecting funds in support of associated charities.

THE RESULTS

A ten-year-old girl suffering from an extremely rare illness has won a coveted community award for her campaigning work. Gabriella Farrugia has been named Young Person of Distinction in the Mayor of St Albans City and District’s annual Pride Awards 2016. She was one of nine individuals or groups who were presented with an award by the Mayor, Councillor Salih Gaygusuz, at a celebratory evening. Long-time Oxfam volunteer Hilary Tyrell was given the Mayor’s Special Recognition Award and Sustainable St Albans took two titles. Charity worker John Brown, artist Catherine Fenton, dance centre All Saints Studios, hospice ambassador Sue Hobley and St Albans for Refugees were the other winners. Gabriella was diagnosed last year with the condition Juvenile Dermatomyositis, known as JDM, that affects only one in three million children. It is a disease of the immune system which inflicts severe muscle weakness on sufferers. Gabriella, of Marshalswick, St Albans, fronted a campaign for world-famous Great Ormond Street Hospital in London where she has spent most of the past five months. She bravely agreed to help doctors raise awareness of the disease as they tried to raise funds for research and equipment. So far, the appeal has gained more than £2 million. Cllr Gaygusuz personally chose Ms Tyrell for his Special Recognition Award for her work for Oxfam and St Albans Friends of Palestine. She took over as chair of the St Albans Oxfam Campaign Group in 2004 when she retired from teaching science at St Albans Girls’ School. Under her leadership, the annual Oxfam Herts Hike has almost tripled in size. Last year, it attracted 270 walkers and raised £7,000. 32

Sustainable St Albans was named Environmental Champion of the Year and also won the Community Project of the Year award. The group organised a week of 100 events last November to draw attention to the impact of climate change and engage the local community. More than 130 local groups took part along with 2,000 school children and some 1,700 other residents. The Mayor’s Pride Awards honour people and groups who make a positive contribution to the local community. They are delivered by St Albans City and District Council, in association with the St Albans District Centre for Voluntary Service and Radio Verulam 92.6 FM. All the winners, apart from Ms Tyrell, were chosen from 24 finalists by a panel of judges including the Mayor and representatives of various community groups.The others were: Community Champion of the Year John Brown: a charity volunteer for Computer Friendly,Tools for Africa and the Children’s Society for 10 years. Cultural Innovation Award Catherine Fenton: she created an unusual and challenging art competition for children and adults to promote the UN’s World Toilet Day. Community Oriented Business of the Year All Saints Studios: a centre for dance, education and performance involving both children and adults offering free classes for carers and other groups in need. Voluntary Sector Award Sue Hobley: tireless volunteer and ambassador for Rennie Grove hospice. Inclusive Communities Award St Albans for Refugees: a campaign group that helps refugees from war-torn Syria and other countries and has organised collections of clothing and food parcels.

UNVEILING OF MAGNA CARTA BENCHES Councillor Annie Brewster has presented St Albans with handmade wooden benches to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the City’s association with Magna Carta. The curved, solid oak benches were commissioned by Cllr Brewster who served as the Mayor of St Albans City and District in 2013/14. She handed over the gift at a presentation ceremony at the War Memorial in St Peter’s Street where the benches have been sited. Magna Carta is regarded as one of the most important documents in history as it established the rule of law with its human rights and obligations. St Albans was the scene of the first meeting, on August 4 1213, held to discuss the content of the peace agreement between the Barons, the Clergy and King John. The benches were made by Karl Barowsky of Solid Oak Hardwood Furniture, Hartlepool, which supplies benches to many Royal Parks.

“Similarly, in my 2013 Mayoral year, St Albans again led the way holding the inaugural events at the start of two years of national and international celebrations to commemorate the 800th anniversary of this world changing document. “It has been a long tradition for the Mayor to give a gift to the City and, in days gone by, it was often a piece of silver. “I received numerous requests for more benches in the City Centre and, as the District Council has just completed a project to create a circular paved garden area in front of the recently restored War Memorial, it has been the perfect opportunity to fuse heritage and function.”

The benches have six distinctive cut-outs of the St Albans saltire shield. Mr Barowsky said: “I was delighted to be asked to design some benches worthy of such an important City. What we have created is a one off design. You will not find benches like this anywhere else in the Country.”

The Wimbledon Championships date back to 1877 but did not take up residence at Church Road until 1922, where the ground now has a capacity of 35,000.

Up to 40,000 tennis balls will be used during the tournament, each one hand-tested for weight, bounce and compression and stored at exactly 68 degrees

Yellow balls were first used in 1986 and will this year be collected by a total of 200 ball boys and girls who have all undergone a rigorous training programme.

More than 27,000 kilos of English strawberries are likely to be eaten by spectators, topped by 7,000 litres of cream.

In 1968, when prize money was first awarded at Wimbledon, the total was ÂŁ26,150.

The trophy for the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s singles at Wimbledon is one of the most recognisable

in sport and dates back to 1887. The magnificent gold cup stands 18 1/2 inches high & has a diameter of 7 1/2 inches, but the eagle-eyed might notice the pineapple design which adorns the top of the lid.

The longest match lasted 112 games, between RA (Pancho) Gonzalez & Charlie Passarell, both from the US, in 1966. The first set alone was 46 games long.

The famous Wimbledon turf is a mixture of 70% perennial rye grass and 30% Barcrown creeping red fescue. It is cut to a height of exactly eight millimetres.

More than 6,000 people staff the championships, including a temporary staff of several hundred hired by the All England Club as well as others who are provided by firms, contractors, voluntary bodies and public services.

During World War II all tennis halted at Wimbledon, but the grounds of the All England club were pressed into action to aid the British war effort.

St Hilda’s was purchased by the Hutchinson family in 1950, at a time when numbers were at just 48 pupils. The School clearly grew enormously during the following three decades. 40

Mrs Hutchinson introduced additional subjects in these early years,together with establishing academic rigour and a love of learning. Their daughter, Mary Piachaud, who followed later as Headmistress and is still the Proprietor, has been reflecting on all St Hilda’s stands for: ‘Every girl who comes to us is nurtured and encouraged to fulfil her talents. Our philosophy is simple: we want to produce happy, well-balanced and well-educated pupils who leave St Hilda’s as confident, self-assured young ladies, ready to move on to their secondary school.’

SPOTLIGHT ON A LOCAL AUTHOR Local Children’s Author, Launches her Debut Harpenden based writer, Camilla Chester, officially launched her debut novel, Jarred Dreams, on 14th May at Harpenden’s The Oddfellow’s Arms. Jarred Dreams is a chapter book (aimed at readers aged 9+) about a grotesque ghoul who steals children’s dreams, storing them in jars in his cellar. It was shortlisted in the National Literacy Trust New Author Prize 2015, and has been described as, “gripping”, “full of suspense”, “intriguing” and “brilliant”. As part of her book promotion Camilla will be giving talks and workshops in local schools, libraries and bookshops. She is also currently working with the Harpenden Town Council and local book reviewer, Katherine Sunderland, to organise a mini Harpenden literary festival.

The number of visitors to major events in St Albans City centre soared last year with website hits up by 31.5%.

Facebook pages for Enjoy St Albans and the Food and Drink Festival have seen the number of ‘likes’ triple in the past nine months.

Around 15,000 people attended the food and drink festival finale in October, up from 12,500 in 2014.

The Council is working with the St Albans Visitor Partnership and the City Centre Partnership to promote the City as a tourist destination.

The Christmas lights switch-on attracted 14,000 people, compared to 10,000 in 2014, while June’s Alban Street Festival pulled in 10,000 visitors, up from 6,000. There were 103,000 visitors to the Christmas Market, a rise of 13,000 on the year before.

Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism, said, “It is important that we attract as many people as possible to St Albans to help local businesses that provide jobs and services for the community. “The figures for last year were very impressive and we plan to build on them in the months to come.

All of the events are run by St Albans City and District Council with the aim of boosting the local economy as well as providing entertainment for residents.

“The Christmas Market is now an established attraction and will be coming back for a fourth year while other events, like the Albans Street Festival, also continue to grow.

The visitor website www.enjoystalbans.com saw a 31.5% increase in traffic last year from 341,000 hits to 449,000. The Council has recently upgraded the site to make it mobile-friendly.

“Next year will see the opening of the new £7.75 million Museum and Art Gallery which will be a huge visitor attraction. It will give people a further reason for exploring St Albans.”

THE GRAPE ESCAPE Harpenden charity, the A-T Society, invites you to join a new cycle challenge. Starting from St Albans Cathedral on Wednesday 7th September, the cyclists will pedal a total of 346 miles over 4 days to the finish line in Epernay, the Champagne capital of France. Local cyclists can sign up to take part in the challenge and either self-fund the tour or fundraise for the charity. The A-T Society was founded by a Harpenden family 26 years ago to support UK families living with the rare genetic condition AtaxiaTelangiectasia (A-T) and fund medical research. Children born with A-T appear healthy until they are around 2 years old when they become wobbly on their feet. Sadly, by the age of 10 most are wheelchair users and with a high risk of cancer and lung disease, life expectancy is just 26 years. The charity see this age as something of a silver lining however, as thanks to their work, life expectancy has increased by 8 birthdays since 2007 as a result of the A-T Society’s research and care. William Davis, CEO of the A-T Society and a keen cyclist said “I signed up for this tour as I wanted to challenge myself and improve my fitness. I have never cycled this far before but am looking forward to joining other riders on an adventure and taking in the breathtaking scenery in France. I think anyone who signs up for this event will find it rewarding, especially if they choose to fundraise for the A-T Society. 52

A-T is an incredibly tough diagnosis for a young family. They need help with healthcare, equipment, housing, education - everything really - and then they want research to find a cure. The A-T Society provides all this - but like all rare conditions A-T is often overshadowed. Explore the town’s fascinating past with Harpenden & District Local History Society Town Trail No. 1 Starting from The George and returning to the Harpenden Arms, a fascinating walk back in time along Harpenden High Street.

Ever wondered about Harpenden in days of yore? Harpenden is a thriving town, but to older residents it remains ‘the village’. Many of the buildings and other landmarks from that earlier era are still with us, though their history is sometimes not readily apparent. Other important features from the past are now only memories, but the Society seeks to keep these alive, by bringing Harpenden’s heritage to a wider audience. In the Society’s archive collection are many thousands of historical pictures, books, maps and other fascinating documents and artefacts. The History Centre at Park Hall is open on Tuesday afternoons, and otherwise by arrangement, for academic study as well as for anyone wanting to browse and know more about the gradual evolution of the area and it’s community through past decades, and indeed centuries, to the present day. Supported by Harpenden Town Council, St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and with the co-operation of the Harpenden Society, the Local History Society plays a vital role in giving Harpenden its unique identity within Hertfordshire.

1. The George is first mentioned in 1507, but maybe not on this site. It was rebuilt in C19 and is seen here in the 1930s. The site of the garage to the south (now Pizza Express) was a tea garden in Victorian times, when parties drove in by wagonette for ‘Beanfeasts’ and dancing on the lawn. 2. Kingston House, No. 6 High Street was built in 1912 as Edgar Salisbury’s hardware shop on the site of Dr Kingston’s house. Later occupants were Halford’s, C&A stores and M&Co. Note the shields above the windows marking Industry, Strength, Goodwill and Service; also the Harpenden and Hertfordshire coats of arms. 3. TheWhite Lion at No. 28 High Street was a small Victorian pub, with decorative moulded bricks. The Perfect Pizza sign hangs from a bracket which once supported a model of a white lion, see left. 4. The Old Cock Inn has traces of a C17 timber-framed building and is more than likely the site of still earlier hostelries.

2. 72 High St - Another much altered C17 timber-frame structure lies behind the brick façade. It is believed to have formed part of an even earlier & larger group of hostelry buildings. It was the Old Red Lion in the early 1900s, and Rolts cycle & pram shop in the 1960s, until it was refurbished as shops in 1976. 58 58

6. 73-75 High Street, at the corner of Sun Lane. A late C17 timber-framed structure, the end of which was demolished to widen Sun Lane in 1931. The remaining section was converted into shops in July 1955. The Sun pub was here from about 1637 until 1800 (or maybe 1877). It was owned by the Hawkins family in the 1780s. 7. 65-69 High Street. The C17 timber-framed cottages at 67 (The Limes) and 65, had early C18 wallpaintings imitating panelling, which were destroyed when the building was refurbished in the 1970s. In the 1850s No. 65 was Harpenden’s first post office. No. 69 (Tollgate Cottage/Hotel) was added in the 1870s.‘Tollgate’ refers to the barrier controlling traffic from Luton, just south of Sun Lane, when the Turnpike Trust was formed in 1743. 8. The Foresters Arms, a pub which has given its name to the 2012 housing development behind, became an off-licence, before conversion into an estate agency. The Foresters were a self-help charity founded in the early C19. 9. Bowers Parade was built in 1936 in the gardens of Bowers House, which still stands behind. Though a handsome parade, the fact that it concealed Bowers House was highly controversial at the time, which helped give birth to the Harpenden Society. 10. Cross Keys pub - formerly the White Hart.A much altered early C18 building. The innkeeper in 1830 was Henry Oldaker who moved to The Bull (The Old House, Leyton Road) and helped start regular horse racing on the Common in 1848. 60

11. Brewery House - built in 1871 as his home by James Mardall, who owned the Peacock Brewery (on the site of the Methodist Church), one of two breweries then in the High Street. In 1951 the house was sold and converted to shops (currently Harpenden Interiors and WH Smiths). 12. Vaughan Road was cut through in the 1890s, following the demolition of cottages in Lower High Street, with Pellants (clock makers/repairers) at the corner. Willmott’s grocery was replaced by the County & Westminster Bank (now NatWest).

13. Home Farm and Chestnut Cottage were pulled down in 1894 to build Ridley’s ironmongers’ shop at the Corner of Station Road (formerly Staker’s Lane) - now HSBC. 14. Harpenden Arms Hotel built as the Railway Hotel in 1870 by James Mardall (owner of the Peacock Brewery), the landlord in 1890 was Richard Longland, a wine and spirit dealer, corn and hay merchant, and proprietor of the Livery Stables behind the hotel further up Station Road. 61

If you prefer getting stuck in to a “series” try Marnie Richies trilogy of novels about criminologist Georgia McKenzie, or Leigh Russell’s series of 8 novels based on DI Geraldine Steele.

Additional Baggage I would really recommend this collection of short stories for children aged 11+.

Edge of Your Plane Seat / Sun Lounger Reads There are an incredible amount of very good psychological thrillers around at the moment and here are just a few that I’ve enjoyed reading recently. Many are available at bargain prices on Kindle so are prefect for stacking up with before you go away. I’ve chosen these as they are either set in hotels, swimming pools, holiday locations or during the summer. Hopefully it won’t give you too many bad dreams while you are trying to unwind at the beach!

They are all detective and mystery stories written by the most talented contemporary children’s authors. An entertaining collection for curious minds and a great way to discover a whole host of new writers - each have a plethora of titles to enjoy if you find one particularly appealing!

St Albans Clock Tower Built between 1403 & 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. It was first & foremost a political statement; the townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of St Albans’ Abbey. The Tower’s bell, which has survived over 600 years of use, allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the Curfew. It also gave the alarm in case of “fire or fray”. Its bell rang out the first Battle of St. Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health has been highlighted as a key issue for all of St Albans City and District Council’s services especially those working in housing and community safety. It was proposed by Liberal Democrat Councillor Anthony Rowlands who was appointed the District’s Mental Health Champion last year. Councillors Julian Daly, Leader of the Conservative Group, Roma Mills, Leader of the Labour Group and Simon Grover, Green and Independent Group Leader, supported the proposals. The Council has invested £110,000 over the past four years in 24 mental health projects including telephone helplines, workshops and counselling sessions. In adopting the motion, the Council resolved to continue its work on mental health by:

A survey carried out by St Albans Youth Council in 2012/13 found high numbers of young people suffered stress associated with school life. Councillor Rowlands said: “The motion on mental health has been given overwhelming backing by the Council. “It is a statement of recognition, intent and, above all, of commitment.

• Backing the Local Authorities Mental Health Challenge, an initiative set up by seven mental health charities to promote the issue; • Supporting positive mental health in the community though work with schools, health agencies, Hertfordshire County Council and other groups; and • Creating an employer action plan for Time To Change, an organisation that highlights discrimination against those suffering poor mental health. • As part of its Time To Change commitment, the Council will detail its mental health activities and goals.

“There is an enormous amount still to be done before we reach a point where we can feel that support for those with mental illnesses is sufficiently accessible and of a high standard.

The motion noted that at least one in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life.

“We can challenge the stigma, support the voluntary sector and continue to develop our leadership work with young people.”

“We need to be aware of the mental health needs of the young, the lonely, the elderly, those with long-term physical conditions, ethnic minority groups and those living in poverty. “As Councillors there are important opportunities for us to demonstrate that we are alert to mental health needs of residents.

Private Healthcare Makes the Difference. Childbirth, and indeed much of pregnancy, is a fraught process that can be filled with apprehension and more than a little discomfort. The actual birth aside, as a pregnancy progresses through its trimesters, a woman’s body is beset with bouts of round ligament pain, abdominal cramping, various back pains, leg cramps and, into the later stages, Braxton Hicks contractions.All of these are quite normal, but that doesn’t stop them being worrying and, well, a bit of a pain! Your Midwife will talk you through these and help alleviate some of them, but at time in your life a little extra comfort – both mental and physical – goes a long way. NHS antenatal care follows a well walked path of scans, blood tests, and assessments to ensure that you are coping through the pregnancy. While that intervention is welcomed, because it is NHS and you are one of many women going through the same routine, there is little scope for that bit of extra care that make a lot of difference to someone who is perhaps unsure of what every change means and whether a new pain may spell trouble.While an NHS midwife will always seek to comfort an expectant mother, the private healthcare sector goes the extra mile to make sure that the mother is informed, and checked. An increasing number of pregnant women are turning to private healthcare when they become pregnant and find that the extra peace of mind goes a long way. Private healthcare is becoming increasingly common as it is offered as a benefit alongside many jobs and can cover the cost of the higher levels of care given. Throughout pregnancy, an expectant mother going the NHS route would see the midwife a couple of times and have at least two ultrasound scans. But apart from that, provided there are no expected complications, it can be several months of waiting and little contact. How to reduce the risk of burglary Many burglaries are opportunistic and not planned, so they are easy to prevent. Residents can help prevent burglary by following these tips: • • • • • • • • • • • • 102

Join your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Together you can help protect your homes by keeping a look-out for suspicious behaviour in your street. Keep front, patio and back doors closed and locked when you are elsewhere in the house or the garden. Ensure that all windows and external doors are not only closed but locked at night or when you are out of the house. Remember to close downstairs windows when leaving a room, to deter the opportunist thief. Fit good locks to doors and use them. Have window locks fitted to older windows; a burglar is less likely to break in if they have to smash a window. Fit and use a door chain. Change locks when you move into a new home. Fit a good quality alarm from a reputable supplier. A visible burglar alarm can also act as a deterrent. Leave spare keys with someone you trust, not close to external doors or windows. Install external lights. They will welcome genuine visitors & deter the criminal who wishes to work undetected. Set lights on a timer switch to give the impression that someone is in. A living room or a bedroom light will give the impression of occupancy; leaving only a hall or landing light on may not have the same effect.

If light timers are not available, leave a light on if going out at night and draw curtains/blinds. Don’t leave curtains closed during the day. MEASUREMENT EXPERTS AWARDED PARLIAMENTARY ESTATES CONTRACT BIM Model - Houses of Parliament [Harpenden, Herts - 9th June, 2016] - Plowman Craven has been awarded a five-year framework to provide surveying services for the Parliamentary Estate as part of the ongoing Restoration and Renewal Programme for the Palace of Westminster. The commission from the Parliamentary Estates Directorate involves a laser scan survey to capture measurement data of the entire Palace, including the iconic Houses of Parliament, home of the UK Parliament.

Commenting on the award, Malcolm Donald, Director at Plowman Craven, said: “We are honoured to have received such a prestigious contract and look forward to contributing our specialist expertise and BIM capability to this vital project to preserve and protect a UNESCO World Heritage Site of national & global significance.”

House prices in London may seem extortionate – but there’s one place in England that’s worse. New data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that St Albans has the highest average The Hertfordshire city has a median house price of £390,000 compared to the median price of £380,000 in the capital. The ONS analysed Land Registry data between 1995 and 2015 and took an average across all property types, but also looked at differences between specific property types. To get a detached house, Londoners pay on average £664,007. Moving into a similar house in St Albans would cost as much as £675,000. House buyers pay as much as £94,400 more on average for a semi-detached house in St Albans, where such a property costs £529,400 on average, compared to an average of £435,000 in London. However, buying a flat sets you back more in London than it does in St Albans. The median flat price is £90,000 higher in London - £345,000 compared to £255,000 in St Albans. Third on the list of the highest average house prices is Cambridge, where the median house price is £360,000. The ONS said that Cambridge has had the largest increase in house prices of anywhere in England and Wales, with house prices rising by 46.9 per cent between 2010 and 2015. In London, the median house prices rose by 38.2 per cent in the same period. 112

WOODLAND PROJECT FINISHED

A project to improve a woodland for both people and wildlife has finished and won a rave review from the Mayor of St Albans City and District.

The Mayor meets volunteers, CMS officials and others involved in the project. Councillor Salih Gaygusuz visited Bentsley Spinney in Marshalswick, St Albans, to view the changes that have been made. He also unveiled a new, beautifully-illustrated interpretation panel which highlights the woodland’s main features. Among the improvements are the planting of native trees and shrubs, the installation of bird and bat boxes and the thinning of Sycamore trees. There is also better access and new entrance signs. The scheme was funded by a grant of £15,637 given by the Tarmac company through the Landfill Communities Fund. Sandridge Parish Council and Hertfordshire County Councillor Geoff Churchard’s Member Locality Budget also made contributions. The project was delivered by Countryside Management Service (CMS) working in partnership with St Albans City and District Council who own the site. The involvement of local CMS volunteers was crucial in completing the work. 120

Bentsley Spinney is a mix of secondary and ancient woodland and is designated a Local Wildlife Site. It is accessible from Skys Wood Road and The Ridgeway. Cllr Gaygusuz said of his visit on Monday 23 May: “I am hugely impressed by the improvements made to Bentsley Spinney and would urge people to come and have a look to see for themselves. “It is wonderful that many people gave up their time to volunteer and help the professionals deliver this marvellous project.” Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The Council has worked with a number of other organisations to complete this very worthwhile project. “We are sure the people of Marshalswick will be proud of these woodlands and will now make even more use of them. Bentsley Spinney will continue to be a green hub for the community.”

JOBS IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER Taking cuttings is one of the great pleasures of summer gardening; you can propagate a wide range of plants at this time of the year for little or no cost. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got nothing to lose, so sharpen your secateurs and get out in the garden! TYPES OF CUTTINGS Softwood cuttings are taken from actively growing new shoots, often root more quickly, but losses through wilting and rotting can be greater. Semi-ripe cuttings are taken from new shoots that have finished growing with fully developed leaves and a base that is starting to turn woody. Semi-ripe cuttings are easier to handle because and are more robust and less liable to wilt, but be patient as they often take longer to root.

HERBACEOUS PLANTS Although advice is to take cuttings from herbaceous plants in spring as new shoots are produced, they will root just as well from cuttings taken during the summer. Once early performers have finished flowering, many produce a flush of new growth. Those that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t can be encouraged to do so by dead-heading, watering and feeding. Many early flowering herbaceous plants produce new shoots from the base, which make ideal material for summer cuttings. Spreading types tend to produce new growth from existing shoots, which can also be used to make cuttings. In either case, each cutting needs to be 10-15cm long.

Plants that flower during late summer or early autumn can be propagated now from stem cuttings taken from the thrusting new shoots. Normally, just the tip of the stem is used, but with a few easy-to-root subjects, such as phlox and sedum, you can use sections of the stem as well.

SHRUBS Most shrubs are easy to root from cuttings taken at this time of the year. However, it is a common misunderstanding that shrubs have to be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings. In fact, many root more easily from softwood cuttings, but you must not allow them to wilt. Most shrubs can be propagated from the non-flowering shoot tip, cutting just below a leaf joint and removing the lower leaves. The prepared cutting should be 10-15cm long depending on the type of growth. Very easy-to-root shrubs, such as artemesia and buddleja, can be rooted from cuttings taken partway down the stem as well.

You will get better results from some shrubs, including deciduous azaleas, ceratostigma, chaenomeles, genista, lavender, pieris, sage, viburnum and weigela, taking semi-ripe cuttings trimmed from the point it joins last year’s growth. A few shrubs, including camellia, fatsia and mahonia, root better from leaf-bud cuttingsthis is a mid-stem cutting trimmed just above a leaf joint with a short piece of stem, about 5cm long, below it.

CLIMBERS Climbers tend to produce shoots with long stems between leaf joints; this means that preparing stem tip and leaf bud cuttings are the most practical ways of propagating most climbers. Many popular climbers, including clematis, jasmine and honeysuckle, also produce side shoots from horizontally trained stems that can be used to make semi-ripe cuttings – trimming the cutting at the point it joins last year’s growth.

It attracted just 2.4 million viewers on Sunday night, a 10.4 per cent share of the viewing public. Top Gear re-launched two weeks ago with overnight audience of 4.3 million viewers, before dipping to 2.8 million for its second episode last week.

Clarkson will be reunited with his former Top Gear colleagues, Richard Hammond and James May, along with Wilman, for their Amazon Prime series, A Grand Tour, due to launch on the on-demand service in the autumn.
