Harpenden’s Community Radio Station SYLVIA FOUNTAIN PRESENTER ON HARPENDEN’S COMMUNITY RADIO
I started life as a radio presenter working for hospital radio at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. It was purely voluntary and I started there as the fundraiser, raising monies to keep the Hospital radio on air It needed funds of approx. £10K per year. “When I first saw all the studio equipment, my thoughts were ‘I can’t do that’ it is far too technical’. I am pleased to say, they trained me well and I passed a 40-minute test and was ready to present my own show,” “I learnt how to operate the studios. A small example is, you need to load some music, slide in the news on the mixing desk, FADE IN a jingle, slide in a fader for the weather and then present the music and that’s how you do it. Easy! From the L&D, I’ve now been at Nickey radio for almost 2 years. “My passion is rock and blues music and my show is the Classic Rock Show which goes out 3 times a week. (repeated). I have interviewed almost 100 musicians since I started including some iconic artists such as Tony McPhee, Steve Hackett of Genesis, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, Jon Anderson of Yes, Adam Wakeman, son of Rick, Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash. Martin Barre, Ric sanders of Fairport Convention, Geoff Downes of YES, Fish, Bernie Shaw of Uriah Heep to name but a few. It’s always a pleasure to to be able to talk to them.. 4
I also present the community show on Nickey radio,‘About Harpenden’ , this goes to air six times a week (repeated) This has become the platform for local news and events in Harpenden.

‘HIGHLY RECOMMENDED’, ‘EXCELLENT USE OF SPACE’, ’LOOKS REALLY STYLISH’……. THE REVIEWS SAY IT ALL! Tidy Bedrooms are experts at making more storage space in your bedroom with their high quality, made to measure wardrobes. Here are some simple tips to help make sure your get exactly what you need to give everything a home. If you already have a wardrobe it’s a good idea to think about how well this meets your storage needs and then make adjustments to improve on it. Measure the total length of hanging rail space you have and make sure your new wardrobe incorporates at least this length or more if required. Remember you will be able to pack more hanging space into your wardrobe if you choose double hanging rather than single hanging in an interior compartment. If hanging space is what you’re lacking, put as much hanging space inside your wardrobe as possible and then make use of matching drawer chests that can be placed around your room to give you some additional storage space outside your wardrobe. A new wardrobe is a great time to de-clutter and make sure you’re not wasting valuable storage space with items you just don’t use anymore. Remember your interior layout will be split into sections depending on how many doors you have. A rough rule of thumb is that there will be a section behind each door, this will help when you are thinking about how you want to use the internal space. We are always here to help so if you need advice or suggestions on what is possible in your space, take some rough measurements and we can design a wardrobe to suit your space and storage requirements. Or if you want to use our free, no obligation measure and fit service and let one of our surveyors take care it, just give us a call to book an appointment on 01582 471847.

HERE GO THE HAWKS!! All Harpenden Colts teams are gearing up for a challenging year this season, with many eyes on the Hawks u16 as they definitely had the best season last year, after they won the division 4 league title, only losing 1 game in the whole season!!!
Manager Ross Hampson, is really looking forward to the new season as Hawks will be starting in division 2. Ross said “This year will be really tough”, but he just wants his boys to enjoy their football and carry on being a great asset to Harpenden Colts. “These boys have gone through some turbulent times but, by pulling together as a team and showing maturity, they won the league and have formed a very special bond as a team, which will help this season.” Before Ross took over, the Hawks had a fantastic Manager in Chris Gerrard, who did an amazing job in setting up the foundations for the squad. Sadly, just before Christmas 2015, Chris died suddenly. 22
The whole team was devastated to hear that their much loved manager had passed away, as Chris was a role model to the boys who they looked up to, a wonderful guy and above all their friend. With Hawks looking to fold, Ross who used to help Chris at Wednesday evening training, took over the reins. Ross said, “The boys are a wonderful bunch of guys, who have supported me one hundred per cent last season as their manager and I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve this season”. He thanked them for accepting him as their team manager, along with a big thank you to all their supportive parents too. Ross also added “If you are free, come along and support us in our challenging season, see our website for match fixtures www.harpendencolts.com”

WEBCAMS AT WASTE RECYCLING CENTRES HELP YOU AVOID THE QUEUE
New webcams and CCTV have been installed at the majority of Household Waste Recycling Centres in Hertfordshire to help you beat the queue. Residents can now see a live feed from their local Household Waste Recycling Centre by checking the internet to see how busy it is before making a trip to their local site. Terry Hone, Executive Member for Community Safety and Waste, said: “Our Household Waste Recycling Centres are visited almost 2.5 million times every year and we know that queues can sometimes be a problem. The cameras will help residents decide when or when not to visit.”
Visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/hwrc to see if your local site is busy before you leave the house. You can also find out about opening hours at all the Household Waste Recycling Centres across the county and get information about what items can be recycled on the kerbside, saving you the trip.
Recent analysis has shown that one in five visitors use the sites several times a month – we are asking regular visitors to take the following steps to help us:
• save up your recyclables for a single trip • sort your items before you arrive to help make the visit much quicker - this reduces queues and waiting times for other users • you may also be able to avoid a trip by making use of kerbside recycling services offered by the district and borough councils rather than visiting your local recycling centre • with the summer season upon us, many of you will be planning to spruce up your borders and cut your lawns but most Hertfordshire residents can dispose of green waste in their garden waste bin for collection. Please make use of this where possible. 28

2017 SAT 25th NOV - SAT 23rd DEC
After 1,000 years of a regular market, St Albans now has a Christmas one with over 50 stalls. The event takes place in and around the beautiful Vintry Garden - a walled garden adjacent to the magnificent 11th-century St Albans Cathedral. This year’s Christmas Market runs from 25th November to 23rd December 2017. Visitors will enjoy browsing the high quality produce on offer over 50 traditional wooden chalets outside the Cathedral and in the Vintry Garden. The pretty Cathedral quarter sits right at the centre of a triangle of St Albans ‘oldest’ treasures: the only working Medieval Clock Tower; the oldest Public School in the country; and, for visitors to the market who fancy a pint of real ale, the oldest pub in the UK, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, just at the foot of the Abbey Orchard, a stone’s throw from the Cathedral.

St Hilda’s – the best start in life
“At the end of each year we have looked back and commented on our daughter’s year - always describing it as filled with challenges, hard work, motivating activities, fun, warmth and ending up with a happy girl making lots of progress. We can leave St Hilda’s confident in the knowledge that she is full prepared for the new experiences and challenges ahead. A huge thank you to all of you.”
This has been borne out in the fantastic results achieved by our leavers this year, who have amassed an outstanding 16 scholarships and awards between them in sport, drama, art and music, including 5 academic scholarships to Haberdashers’ Aske’s, St Albans High School for Girls, Abbot’s Hill and Haileybury.
It is always satisfying to know that a child has moved on to Senior School prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond.
Our girls have a plethora of activities on offer and our extra-curricular programme seeks to challenge traditional stereotypes with Football, Judo and Fencing all thriving activities. This year we are also developing our outdoor curriculum further in a desire to embrace our surroundings and facilities to the full. We certainly believe that our all-round, nurturing and fulfilling learning experience equips our pupils with the passport to their next destination. Whether pursuing academic excellence that enables your child to gain their first choice of secondary school, encouraging blossoming creativity inside and outside through the creative arts, aiming for your zenith in sporting endeavour or increasing your confidence amongst a caring, family atmosphere, St Hilda’s has something for everyone. The words above came from a parent whose daughter has just left the much-respected Harpenden School and started her senior educational journey recently. She wrote to express her thanks for all that St Hilda’s has meant, an oft repeated story down the years. The School’s banner heading is ‘nurturing the individual’, which can be defined as encouraging each girl to fulfil their potential to the full. 48
Following consultation with parents, we have extended our out of hours care and now offer free breakfast and after school sessions between 7.30am and 6.00pm. In 2018, we are excited to announce that we will be welcoming back boys into our Nursery. St Hilda’s has had a long tradition of including boys in the past, most recently in the 1980s. Some of our families have commented over the years how they would have liked to keep their children together until full-time school commences, and we hope that this renewed feature will be a popular addition to what we have on offer.
Come and see for yourself what this outstanding School can give your child.

Love Hertfordshire Parks? Then you need this website! With over a hundred flagship parks across Hertfordshire, why not put your walking boots on and get exploring this autumn! There’s a new website to help you find your perfect park at www.parksherts.co.uk You can select filters based on what’s important to you, e.g. walking, cycling and running routes; historical and wildlife guides; activity trails; local events; playgrounds; maps and more.
The ParksHerts Project provides a single web based point of access for information about Hertfordshire’s parks and open spaces.
The project aims to encourage residents to make more of their valuable local space and visit parks they may not have previously explored, whilst also supporting people to make getting outdoors part of their daily lives by finding places to enjoy and share with others. Funding for the Project has been secured from Hertfordshire County Council Public Health and nine Hertfordshire District and Borough Councils who have recognised the valuable impact that parks and open spaces can have on both physical and mental health. Visit Health in Herts for further information and advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle. ParksHerts is the collective name for the Hertfordshire Association of Cultural Officers Greenspace Management Group. Explore the town’s fascinating past with Harpenden & District Local History Society Town Trail No. 1 Starting from The George and returning to the Harpenden Arms, a fascinating walk back in time along Harpenden High Street.
Ever wondered about Harpenden in days of yore? Harpenden is a thriving town, but to older residents it remains ‘the village’. Many of the buildings and other landmarks from that earlier era are still with us, though their history is sometimes not readily apparent. Other important features from the past are now only memories, but the Society seeks to keep these alive, by bringing Harpenden’s heritage to a wider audience. In the Society’s archive collection are many thousands of historical pictures, books, maps and other fascinating documents and artefacts. The History Centre at Park Hall is open on Tuesday afternoons, and otherwise by arrangement, for academic study as well as for anyone wanting to browse and know more about the gradual evolution of the area and it’s community through past decades, and indeed centuries, to the present day. Supported by Harpenden Town Council, St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and with the co-operation of the Harpenden Society, the Local History Society plays a vital role in giving Harpenden its unique identity within Hertfordshire.

1. The George is first mentioned in 1507, but maybe not on this site. It was rebuilt in C19 and is seen here in the 1930s. The site of the garage to the south (now Pizza Express) was a tea garden in Victorian times, when parties drove in by wagonette for ‘Beanfeasts’ and dancing on the lawn. 2. Kingston House, No. 6 High Street was built in 1912 as Edgar Salisbury’s hardware shop on the site of Dr Kingston’s house. Later occupants were Halford’s, C&A stores and M&Co. Note the shields above the windows marking Industry, Strength, Goodwill and Service; also the Harpenden and Hertfordshire coats of arms. 3. TheWhite Lion at No. 28 High Street was a small Victorian pub, with decorative moulded bricks. The Perfect Pizza sign hangs from a bracket which once supported a model of a white lion, see left. 4. The Old Cock Inn has traces of a C17 timber-framed building and is more than likely the site of still earlier hostelries.
2. 72 High St - Another much altered C17 timber-frame structure lies behind the brick façade. It is believed to have formed part of an even earlier & larger group of hostelry buildings. It was the Old Red Lion in the early 1900s, and Rolts cycle & pram shop in the 1960s, until it was refurbished as shops in 1976. 54 54
Illustrations from the Local History Society archives. We have a large collection of photos of Harpenden and the surrounding area. 55
55
6. 73-75 High Street, at the corner of Sun Lane. A late C17 timber-framed structure, the end of which was demolished to widen Sun Lane in 1931. The remaining section was converted into shops in July 1955. The Sun pub was here from about 1637 until 1800 (or maybe 1877). It was owned by the Hawkins family in the 1780s. 7. 65-69 High Street. The C17 timber-framed cottages at 67 (The Limes) and 65, had early C18 wallpaintings imitating panelling, which were destroyed when the building was refurbished in the 1970s. In the 1850s No. 65 was Harpenden’s first post office. No. 69 (Tollgate Cottage/Hotel) was added in the 1870s.‘Tollgate’ refers to the barrier controlling traffic from Luton, just south of Sun Lane, when the Turnpike Trust was formed in 1743. 8. The Foresters Arms, a pub which has given its name to the 2012 housing development behind, became an off-licence, before conversion into an estate agency. The Foresters were a self-help charity founded in the early C19. 9. Bowers Parade was built in 1936 in the gardens of Bowers House, which still stands behind. Though a handsome parade, the fact that it concealed Bowers House was highly controversial at the time, which helped give birth to the Harpenden Society. 10. Cross Keys pub - formerly the White Hart.A much altered early C18 building. The innkeeper in 1830 was Henry Oldaker who moved to The Bull (The Old House, Leyton Road) and helped start regular horse racing on the Common in 1848. 56 56
11. Brewery House - built in 1871 as his home by James Mardall, who owned the Peacock Brewery (on the site of the Methodist Church), one of two breweries then in the High Street. In 1951 the house was sold and converted to shops (currently Harpenden Interiors and WH Smiths). 12. Vaughan Road was cut through in the 1890s, following the demolition of cottages in Lower High Street, with Pellants (clock makers/repairers) at the corner. Willmott’s grocery was replaced by the County & Westminster Bank (now NatWest).
13. Home Farm and Chestnut Cottage were pulled down in 1894 to build Ridley’s ironmongers’ shop at the Corner of Station Road (formerly Staker’s Lane) - now HSBC. 14. Harpenden Arms Hotel built as the Railway Hotel in 1870 by James Mardall (owner of the Peacock Brewery), the landlord in 1890 was Richard Longland, a wine and spirit dealer, corn and hay merchant, and proprietor of the Livery Stables behind the hotel further up Station Road. 57

The Perfect Halloween Pumpkin!
Things You’ll Need.
Newspaper, Pumpkin, Felt-tip Pen or pencil, Sharp Knife, Tea Light. 1.
Select a fresh pumpkin in a shape that pleases you. Some people prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped but it’s up to you.
2.
Draw a circle or hexagon on the top of the pumpkin in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through.
3.
Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.
4. Remove the stem end, which will act as a lid, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp on to the newspaper. 5.
Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin.
6. After you have emptied out the insides, draw a pattern for the face with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Make sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough to get the full effect later.
60 60
7.
Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.
8.
Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.
9.
Place a tea light inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.
10.
Stand back and admire your handy work!

St Albans Clock Tower Built between 1403 & 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. It was first & foremost a political statement; the townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of St Albans’ Abbey. The Tower’s bell, which has survived over 600 years of use, allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the Curfew. It also gave the alarm in case of “fire or fray”. Its bell rang out the first Battle of St. Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today you can climb to the top of the Tower & enjoy magnificent views of St Albans & the surrounding countryside. Disabled access is difficult as there is a restricted entrance and 93 narrow steps to the top. Open Saturday and Sunday only (and selected Bank Holidays), Easter to end of September 10:30am - 5pm.

KEEPING WARM THIS WINTER ADVICE FROM AGE UK
Make yourself warmer • Wear several thin layers, rather than one thick layer. This is because they trap warm air close to the body. • Go for clothes made from wool, cotton or fleecy fabrics • Draw your curtains, as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping and the draughts coming in. • Keep any windows and internal doors closed when it’s cold - this will keep heat inside, where you most need it. • A lot of heat is lost through the head and neck, so if you’re chilly indoors, try wearing a hat and scarf. • Your body keeps warm by burning food you’ve eaten, so make sure you have regular hot meals that contain carbs, such as potatoes, pasta, bread and rice. • If you’re sitting down, a shawl or blanket will provide extra warmth. You should also try to keep your feet up, because air is cooler at ground level. • Wear warm clothes in bed. When it’s really cold, wear thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat.
Some longer-term things you can do to help ward off the winter chill • Have your heating system serviced and chimney swept. • Check your water stopcock is working properly. • Get a keyhole cover – it should only cost a couple of pounds and will help keep the draughts out in cold weather. • Fit thermal linings to your curtains if you can - this will also help to keep the heat in. • Check out the benefits and grants available to help with insulation and energy efficiency, such as cavity wall insulation.

How many calories are in your favourite drink?
With Christmas around the corner, do you know what your favourite drink’s food equivalent is… It’s all very well talking in units, but what does this really mean when you’re at the pub or having drinks with dinner at home? With a pint of lager containing the same amount of calories as a slice of pizza! A standard glass of red or white wine (175ml) with 13% ABV could contain up to 160 calories, similar to a slice of Madeira cake A large glass of wine (250ml) with 13% ABV can add 228 calories to your dinner? That’s similar to an ice cream or two fish fingers! It’s a myth that drinks featuring clear spirits are low in calories. You might be surprised to hear that one vodka and coke made with a 25ml measure of 40% ABV vodka contains 110 calories – similar to a small slice of pizza. Clear spirits contain slightly fewer calories than dark spirits but the calories in vodka and other clear spirits can still quickly add up Dark Spirits contain slightly more calories, a 25ml measure 40% ABV shot, like whisky, with mixer contains 106 calories, similar to a chocolate mousse. Ordering a 50ml ‘double’ spirit measure with 37.5% ABV like gin and mixer contains 149 calories, similar to a chocolate filled pancake To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, the UK Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO) low risk alcohol unit guidelines advise it is safest not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. Saving up your weekly units so you can drink them all on a Friday night is not the way to interpret the CMO’s advice, it’s best to spread your intake evenly across the week. 98
The size and strength of your drink will determine the number of units it contains. Unfortunately it’s not as simple as one drink, one unit. A glass of wine can range between just over one unit and more than three units, depending on the size of the glass and type of wine. And when you’re drinking at home, you tend to pour measures that are larger than you get in your local, so you could be regularly drinking far more than you think. A great way to avoid losing track of how much alcohol you’re pouring out at home is to use one of drinkaware Unit and Measure Cups, available on their website for 90p. Many people don’t have a realistic idea of how much they’re drinking. A good place to start is by finding out just how many units there are in your favourite drink. Visit: www.drinkaware.co.uk/understand-your-drinking/unit-calculator Also take a self-assessment test online at www.drinkaware. co.uk/selfassessment to understand more about the impact of your drinking or visit www.drinkaware.co.uk for helpful tips and advice. Drinkaware is an independent charity working to reduce alcohol misuse and harm in the UK. We’re here to help people make better choices about drinking. If you’re worried you, or someone you know is drinking too much, visit their page on alcohol dependence www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/drinking-habitsand-behaviours/am-i-alcohol-dependent

CHECK RESTAURANTS’ HYGIENE RATINGS Under the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, St Albans City and District Council inspects local food businesses for compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations and gives them a score. The food hygiene ratings run from 0-5, with five representing a very good level of hygiene and a zero indicating that urgent improvement is required. The Council puts all its ratings on the Food Standards Agency’s website at: www.food.gov.uk/ratings. Local restaurants and food businesses are also given a Food Standards Agency green and black sticker to display on their windows; the sticker shows their food hygiene rating. You can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look or by how romantic the décor and ambience is. It’s the things you can’t see, like germs spread by bad hygiene practices, that you need to consider when booking a restaurant. There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest - check the food hygiene rating. If there is no green and black sticker in the window or you spot a low rating online, you can make an informed choice about where to book.
COOKING ACADEMY & CATERING SERVICES
Catriona Stewart, head of the Food Hygiene Ratings Team at the Food Standards Agency, said, “On Valentine’s Day people are focused on making sure that special lunch or dinner goes well and that they make a good impression with their date. We want them to factor in the food hygiene rating when deciding where to go and then enjoy their romantic meal out.” Nationally, 92% of food businesses are rated a three or higher so there are plenty of places with good food hygiene standards, you can choose from. This means you can easily avoid taking your special date to those places not meeting the grade. According to the Food Standards Agency, thousands of food businesses displaying a three to five rating say it made a positive difference to their business. Businesses can find out more about making the most of their hygiene ratings at www.food.gov.uk/business-industry/caterers/hygieneratings

IF YOU LIVE IN A FLAT, IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO CHECK YOUR DOORS MEET FIRE REGULATIONS. A fire door is a vital safety device engineered to save lives and property.
What do they actually do? Fire doors act as a barrier to a fire, cutting off and protecting parts of a building. • Reducing the damage caused by fire and smoke • Protecting route of evacuation • Providing the emergency services with a protected route to access the building • Protecting users of a building who may have difficulty evacuating quickly. Fire doors are a vital part of the building fabric, dividing the building into individual fire compartments, constructed and lined with suitable fire resisting materials to reduce the spread of fire. Besides their heavy duty nature, fire doors are self-closing. Sometimes people put in new doors, or modify fire doors so they don’t close automatically. By doing so, you could be putting yourself and your neighbours at risk if there is a fire. Also, you may not be complying with the terms of your insurance, which means insurers may not pay out if there is a fire! There is lots of helpful fire safety guidance on www. stalbans.gov.uk website. Just enter ‘fire safety’ in the search box.

MIRROR MIRROR ON MY WALL…
No matter where you put one, mirrors are an easy way to reflect light, make a space look bigger, and open up a room.
Just like windows, mirrors add light and depth to the room interior, so feel free to use them as decorative windows that could be installed in any place you wish. It shouldn’t necessarily be a big wall mirror, even a small mirror in bold framing can become a centre of attention. Designers tend to use mirrors in small rooms since they are able to visually expand it. Just make sure it reflects nice views. Mirrors cannot only enlarge space, but also brighten it up and become an additional source of lighting.
You will be surprised to find out that mirrors can serve as full-fledged art objects. Simply play with them and try to hang a group of mirrors on a certain wall. Ensure the mirrors are proportional to each other and to the wall: don’t try to hang a multitude of small mirrors on a big wall. Entryways, dining rooms and other areas that deprive

How Do LED lights Work?
SHINING A LIGHT ON BULBS! Old-fashioned incandescent bulbs have been phased out across Europe, so we now have the choice of three types of bulbs, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), Halogens and Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
LEDs have revolutionized energy-efficient lighting by transforming the way light is produced. A LED is a “solid-state lighting” technology. This means that instead of emitting light from a vacuum (as in an incandescent bulb) or a gas (as in a CFL bulb), an LED emits light from a piece of solid matter – a semiconductor. A LED produces light when electrons move around within its semiconductor structure. As the electrons stream across the semiconductor, they create electromagnetic radiation, which in part takes the form of visible light that we see. The light that is created by a LED bulb can be of any colour and can even be ultraviolet or infrared.
One of the popular bulbs out of the three above is the LED Bulb, which are available in many shapes and sizes, with a wide range of colours and neutrals that will meet a variety of lighting needs. If you are into DIY projects and interior design, there are a number of creative and fun ways you can light up your home with LEDs. Continued on page 118

SHINING A LIGHT ON BULBS!Continued
Advantages of LED Lights
Will using LED’s save money?
LEDs are still the most expensive type of light bulb you’ll see in the shops, however they are the most energy-efficient bulbs, using 90% less energy than traditional incandescents and can sometimes pay for themselves through energy savings in just a couple of months. By contrast, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) use 60%-80% less energy than incandescents, while halogens use 20-30% less. Also LEDs claim to be ultra long lasting - lasting for 2530 years, depending on which one you buy and how you use it.They also give out almost immediate light the second you flick the switch.
Replacing just one 60W incandescent with a CFL bulb (the most common style of energy-saving light bulb) can reduce your electricity bill by around £7 a year, so replacing 10 light bulbs with energy-savers could save you £70 a year. LED bulbs are even more efficient than CFLs and save almost £7.50 per bulb per year. LEDs usually cost more to buy initially but have incredibly long life expectancies, so you may not need to replace them for up to 30 years!

A MATTRESS
• Vacuum it – Your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery attachment is your Number One ally in mattress cleaning.
• Deodorise it -To rid your mattress of rankness, sprinkle it well with baking soda and rub that in with a stiff-bristled brush. (If you’d like to scent your mattress, mix the baking soda with a few drops of essential oil first. Lavender is reputed to be a sleep aid, but sandalwood is nice, too.) Let the baking soda sit for 10 minutes, and then… • Vacuum again – By scrubbing the baking soda into your mattress you’ve helped it bond with surface moisture.Vacuuming it now will help pull out trace dampness and ensures you won’t wake up coated with powdery residue in the morning. • Get the stains out – Scrub again…using your preferred cleaning product.

AUTUMN MOTORING
We all love the changing colours of autumn but for car owners there are a few jobs to do… 1. Antifreeze Not just for winter, antifreeze is important all year round as it contains additives to prevent corrosion and improve summer cooling too. A frozen engine is very expensive to repair! Call K.S & K.G Tyler in Southdown on 01582 713328 or Victoria Garage in Batford on 01582 760551 to get some professional advice on Antifreeze. – see page 98 & 99 for their adverts. 2. Battery This is one of the most common causes of breakdown at any time of year, but particularly in the winter when electrical loads are higher. If there’s any sign of the battery struggling now the time to change it. Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU. Tel: 01582 766333. 3. Bulbs Check all bulbs regularly not forgetting brake lights and number plate lights.
The handbook will show you how to change bulbs, though some headlight bulbs may require a visit to the garage. Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU Tel: 01582 766333 4. Tyres Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. The AA recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, so if the treads are getting low think about buying new tyres now. Call Big D’s tyres and get them fitted at your door at competitive prices. Big D’s Tyres Tel: 01582 467800 – see page 5 for advert. 5. Windscreen wipers and washer fluid Blades will last for two years at the most. New blades clear the screen more effectively and so help reduce dazzle from the sun. Top up your washer fluid and treat with a good quality, purpose-made additive to reduce the chance of freezing.Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU. Tel: 01582 766333.
