HARPENDEN LEISURE AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT St Albans City & District Council is getting closer to achieving its ambition of extending and transforming the Harpenden swimming pool site into one modern integrated leisure centre for a variety of sports and activities.

The plans involve extending the swimming pool building which will provide space for a larger learner pool, with a moveable floor, located alongside a refurbished main pool. There will also be a new sports hall, wet and dry changing facilities and a significantly larger gym with more than 160 stations. Provision is also being made for three dance studios, a crèche, as well as a sauna and a steam room with a relaxation area for users of these two facilities. In addition, visitors will have access to a café and a poolside viewing gallery with seating for spectators.

4

The plans for the new arts and culture facility provide for a larger theatre than currently exists at Harpenden Public Halls, with 511 seats. There will be a multi-purpose room, a cultural and heritage exhibition space, as well as bars on two floors and a café overlooking Rothamsted Park. A first-floor ramp and bridge will form an entrance to the new arts and leisure centre from the park. The plans also provide for a significant increase in car and cycling parking facilities. The Council have now submitted their planning application for the development which can be viewed on the planning portal at w w w. s t a l b a n s . gov. u k / p l a n n i n g / Searchforplanningapplications/ ref: 5/2018/0157 H

Harpenden Audiologist is the BEST IN EUROPE A HEARING EXPERT BASED IN HARPENDEN with a “unique, caring approach and deep emotional connection with his patients” has carried off Europe’s top prize for his profession for an unprecedented second occasion. Robert Beiny, of the Hearing Healthcare Practice, was crowned European Audiologist of the Year after lifting the UK Audiologist of the Year Award. Operating from a purpose built, state-of-the-art clinic in The Foresters, just off Harpenden High Street, Robert and audiologists Jo Rae and Angelique Da Costa have now been nominated and shortlisted in the annual international competition on more occasions than any other UK or European practice. Robert has now been named the UK’s top hearing professional three times and the team has been commended on a further nine occasions – a unique and glittering array of prizes that underline the Hearing Healthcare Practice’s status as the leading hearing practice in the UK.

The Audiologist of the Year Awards is organised by leading hearing aid battery manufacturer, Rayovac, sponsored by The European Federation of Hard of Hearing People (EFHOH) and the European Hearing Instruments Manufacturers Association. Now in its 10th year, the competition relies on nominations from patients who have experienced exceptional care from their audiologists. 6

Robert Beiny was nominated by Christine, a patient at the Hearing Healthcare Practice who described how he didn’t just fit her hearing aids; he gave her hope for the future. In her heart-warming nomination Christine said: “My first impression of Robert Beiny was that he was kind, sympathetic, calm, reassuring, competent and knowledgeable. Fifteen years on, I can certainly say that impression was spot on. He gave me hope. Robert has managed to help me keep pace with my hearing loss (I have a severe to profound loss in both ears) by fitting me with the latest aids that might give me an edge in the hearing world.” Speaking after hearing of the European win, Robert Beiny said; “This really is an award for the whole Hearing Healthcare Practice team and our unique, holistic approach. What makes these Awards so special is that they are based on patient nominations. And I’m so proud to see that what comes across time after time reading their kind words, is that it’s our caring approach, professionalism and the emotional connection we achieve with our patients that makes us special, not simply the amazing technology we all have access to. I’d really like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Christine and all the patients who took time to make a nomination. Without them we couldn’t do the work we do nor achieve so many amazing and life changing results together.” The Hearing Healthcare Practice in Harpenden extends the warmest of welcomes to clients and their families from the local area to as far afield as the USA, Russia and Australia.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN COACH TRIPS TO THEATRES AND CONCERT HALLS?

If so read on! Or join our local arts club for a taste of culture & camaraderie. St. Albans Arts Club began its life in the 1950’s, when a few friends got together to travel up to London for concerts at the Royal Festival Hall. Very soon the group enlarged, and it was soon decided that they needed to provide transport. There also proved to be interest in theatre trips and places of interest. 70 years later we now have well over 200 members from St. Albans, Harpenden and the surrounding areas. We arrange an average of 2 outings per month to both London theatres and provincial theatres and concerts at the Festival Hall, Albert Hall, Barbican and occasionally the wonderful Symphony Hall in Birmingham. The Club is run by a team of volunteers and we are always pleased to welcome new members. The annual membership is £15, and the cost of the trips varies from £25 - £49, which includes transport and drivers’ gratuities. So, no more waiting around in drafty stations for trains to appear. No more battling with the underground. Catch the coach from a stop near you and get dropped off at the appropriate venue.

Please call Deborah Smith (Tel: 01438/821167) for further details.

Continued on page 24 St Albans Chief Inspector Shane O’Neill said: “In line with the rest of the county, and country, we have seen an increase in burglaries in St Albans, Harpenden and London Colney. We are making arrests, targeting suspects and have increased patrols. Residents can also do their bit by taking on board crime prevention advice including giving their homes the ‘lived-in’ look by leaving a light on when it gets dark and investing in CCTV and other web-based cameras. He said: “Burglars prey on houses with less security as they do not want to get caught and they want the line of least resistance.

HERTFORDSHIRE CONSTABULARY Continued By having effective security, you can greatly reduce the chance of being burgled. The list below is not exhaustive but is a good foundation to deter an opportunist burglar.” He advises: • A house alarm monitored and responded to by an alarm company • Stronger locks on doors and windows • Use of timer switches on lights and radios to give the impression of activity in the house • CCTV security cameras • Motion-activated video doorbells which store images to a server • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox) • Install good outside lighting • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property when you’re not there (putting out/ collecting bins etc) • Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition • Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage

• Keep ladders and tools stored away; don’t leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property • Ensure rear fencing is in good repair • Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property, eg trim high hedges • Mark your property with postcode & house number & register your property for free with Immobilise • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows • Store any high value items (eg jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault • Sign up to Neighbourhood Watch via OWL (Online Watch Link) which sends you the latest local crime alerts.

For more advice you can pick up crime prevention advice from your local safer neighbourhood officers whilst they are out and about, or you can call 101. For the latest news, follow the Harpenden and Rural Team @HarpendenPolice on Twitter.

DOG L VERS WANTED! After three years of providing high quality home boarding for dogs, local company Wagging Tails is looking to expand its team of carers in the St Albans and Harpenden area. Kevin Wright, owner of the local branch, says that the demand for the service continues to grow and he is looking for experienced dog owners who would enjoy the company of a dog while their owner is on holiday.

Kevin says that being a dog carer is the ideal solution for people who love dogs but are unable to commit to full time ownership. The existing team includes retired people, stay-athome mums and dads, people working from home, and others who work during term times and enjoy having dogs during the school holidays. Dogs are carefully matched to the most suitable carer and they insist on a “sniffing out meeting beforehand, so that everyone, especially the dog, can make friends before the holiday.

Kevin is asking anyone who would be interested in joining the team to contact him for an informal chat on 01438 798484 or email him at al@waggingtailsuk.co.uk You can also find out more about being a dog carer at www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/al/carer-information

Dog lovers wanted: Welcome a dog into your home for his holiday! While owners are away you will give their dogs love, exercise and companionship within your family home. If you are at home all day, have no children under the age of six, have no more than one dog of your own and would like to enjoy the companionship of guest dogs please get in touch

NEW ON THE SPOT FINES FOR FLY TIPPING! Five local fly-tippers have been issued with Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) since new ‘on-the-spot’ fines were introduced last year.

All of the people involved admitted the offence and paid the fines at the discounted rate of £300 given for early payments. The full rate is £400. One offender was caught after dumping a bicycle, wash basket and a bag of discarded fabrics in the Ashley ward of St Albans. Two of the other offences were carried out in Clarence ward and one each in London Colney and Marshalswick North. FPNs can be issued by authorised Council officers for small-scale fly tipping. Larger fines are in place for more serious offences, with maximum fines of £50,000 and prison terms of up to five years. If you witness fly-tipping actually taking place call the police on 999 and give as much detail as possible, such as: Date and time, location of the incident - address or local landmarks, description of the rubbish e.g. builders rubble, if there was a vehicle involved, what was the registration number; make; model; colour? If you discover fly-tipped waste after the event call our hotline number 01727 809019 or email us the details on wastemanagementservices@stalbans.gov.uk If a fly-tip is blocking part or all of the road, this should be reported to Hertfordshire County Council via their online fault reporting form via www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services or by phone to 0300 1234047. 46

A fresh approach to helping people get onto the Internet

Did you know that 37% of people aged 55+ own a tablet? This is an increase from only 1% in 2011. Computer Friendly is responding to this by putting tablets at the heart of its starter courses. Local charity Computer Friendly, who have been helping adults in the district get onto the Internet since 2002, has seen evidence of this trend firsthand. John Talbot, Computer Friendly chairman said “More of our students want Apple iPad and Android tablet courses now and we less demand for traditional computer courses.” Tablets are less daunting to those new to computing. They can be more intuitive to use and many find that the touchscreen is easier to use than a mouse/keyboard. Why is being online so important? There are huge social and health benefits to being online. Many can’t get out and about, yet we know this social interaction is vital for our well-being. Tablets give us the ability to easily keep in touch with our families irrespective of where we are. 48

How can Computer Friendly help? Computer Friendly run ‘Taste of the Internet’ sessions for those wanting to understand it all, and courses for those who have a tablet or computer and would like help to get started. These ‘Starting off with’ courses only cost £20 for four or five weeks and suit iPhone/Android smartphones as well. And our course workbooks are a vital part of each course. “What hasn’t changed is our absolute commitment to how we teach” says John. “Our big difference is that our tutors and helpers are all volunteers with lots of patience - we teach because we love to.” Want to know more about Computer Friendly?

COLDPLAY TRIBUTE BAND TO HEADLINE AWARD-WINNING OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVAL Hit songs from Coldplay – a band that has sold more than a 100 million records worldwide and won dozens of awards – will feature at Harpenden’s largest outdoor music event and fun day out for all the family. The British rock group’s award-winning sound will be reproduced by Tribute act Yellow as the headline performance at Festival on the Field 2018. With interest in the return of the popular fundraising event on Saturday 7 July already high, tickets are now on sale and selling fast. The other tribute acts will be the ELO Encounter, A Touch of Little Mix, Swanvesta Social Club – and an extra stage performance that will add even more fun to the usual musical bonanza will be provided by singalong specialists, Massaoke. With that final line-up, the 2,500-plus people expected to attend the show are guaranteed an experience that will recreate the tunes of some of the best chart-topping talent, appealing to music fans of all ages. Mark Hill, one of the show’s organisers, says: “For 2018, Festival on the Field has confirmed bookings for great performers and we’re delighted to announce that Coldplay tribute band Yellow will headline. But it’s not just about the music – as in past years, there will lots of other activities, many of which are aimed at keeping the kids entertained!” Since the show’s award-winning 2012 debut, it has returned in 2014 and 2016, raising a combined total of more than £60,000 for projects at Harpenden’s Sir John Lawes and Manland schools. And this year tickets for the event that are sold at other schools in Harpenden will mean that they also receive a share of the proceeds. The fairground that proved such a hit in 2016 will return bigger and better than before, and there will be the usual range of cuisine for all tastes available onsite at the Sir John Lawes sports field. This year, no alcohol can be taken into the event but drinks prices at the event’s real ale bar, Pimm’s bar and general bar will be great value, with proceeds going into the fundraising coffers. There is a modest increase in the price of an adult ticket and gazebo pitches this year, but tickets for children have been pegged at the same £10 price as 2016. You can get in touch with the festival organisers at festivalonthefield@gmail.com. Get the latest news via the Festival on the Field’s Facebook page, or follow on Twitter @FOTFHarpenden.

Explore the town’s fascinating past with Harpenden & District Local History Society Town Trail No. 2 Starting at 2 Southdown Road behind the Harpenden Arms and returning to Yew Tree Farm (Prezzo restaurant)

Ever wondered about Harpenden in days of yore? Harpenden is a thriving town, but to older residents it remains ‘the village’. Many of the buildings and other landmarks from that earlier era are still with us, though their history is sometimes not readily apparent. Other important features from the past are now only memories, but the Society seeks to keep these alive, by bringing Harpenden’s heritage to a wider audience. In the Society’s archive collection are many thousands of historical pictures, books, maps and other fascinating documents and artefacts. The History Centre at Park Hall is open on Tuesday afternoons, and otherwise by arrangement, for academic study as well as for anyone wanting to browse and know more about the gradual evolution of the area and it’s community through past decades, and indeed centuries, to the present day. Supported by Harpenden Town Council, St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and with the co-operation of the Harpenden Society, the Local History Society plays a vital role in giving Harpenden its unique identity within Hertfordshire.

1. The George is first mentioned in 1507, but maybe not on this site. It was rebuilt in C19 and is seen here in the 1930s. The site of the garage to the south (now Pizza Express) was a tea garden in Victorian times, when parties drove in by wagonette for ‘Beanfeasts’ and dancing on the lawn. 2. Kingston House, No. 6 High Street was built in 1912 as Edgar Salisbury’s hardware shop on the site of Dr Kingston’s house. Later occupants were Halford’s, C&A stores and M&Co. Note the shields above the windows marking Industry, Strength, Goodwill and Service; also the Harpenden and Hertfordshire coats of arms. 3. TheWhite Lion at No. 28 High Street was a small Victorian pub, with decorative moulded bricks. The Perfect Pizza sign hangs from a bracket which once supported a model of a white lion, see left. 4. The Old Cock Inn has traces of a C17 timber-framed building and is more than likely the site of still earlier hostelries.

2. 72 High St - Another much altered C17 timber-frame structure lies behind the brick façade. It is believed to have formed part of an even earlier & larger group of hostelry buildings. It was the Old Red Lion in the early 1900s, and Rolts cycle & pram shop in the 1960s, until it was refurbished as shops in 1976. 64 6458

6. 73-75 High Street, at the corner of Sun Lane. A late C17 timber-framed structure, the end of which was demolished to widen Sun Lane in 1931. The remaining section was converted into shops in July 1955. The Sun pub was here from about 1637 until 1800 (or maybe 1877). It was owned by the Hawkins family in the 1780s. 7. 65-69 High Street. The C17 timber-framed cottages at 67 (The Limes) and 65, had early C18 wallpaintings imitating panelling, which were destroyed when the building was refurbished in the 1970s. In the 1850s No. 65 was Harpenden’s first post office. No. 69 (Tollgate Cottage/Hotel) was added in the 1870s.‘Tollgate’ refers to the barrier controlling traffic from Luton, just south of Sun Lane, when the Turnpike Trust was formed in 1743. 8. The Foresters Arms, a pub which has given its name to the 2012 housing development behind, became an off-licence, before conversion into an estate agency. The Foresters were a self-help charity founded in the early C19. 9. Bowers Parade was built in 1936 in the gardens of Bowers House, which still stands behind. Though a handsome parade, the fact that it concealed Bowers House was highly controversial at the time, which helped give birth to the Harpenden Society. 10. Cross Keys pub - formerly the White Hart.A much altered early C18 building. The innkeeper in 1830 was Henry Oldaker who moved to The Bull (The Old House, Leyton Road) and helped start regular horse racing on the Common in 1848. 66 66

11. Brewery House - built in 1871 as his home by James Mardall, who owned the Peacock Brewery (on the site of the Methodist Church), one of two breweries then in the High Street. In 1951 the house was sold and converted to shops (currently Harpenden Interiors and WH Smiths). 12. Vaughan Road was cut through in the 1890s, following the demolition of cottages in Lower High Street, with Pellants (clock makers/repairers) at the corner. Willmott’s grocery was replaced by the County & Westminster Bank (now NatWest).

13. Home Farm and Chestnut Cottage were pulled down in 1894 to build Ridley’s ironmongers’ shop at the Corner of Station Road (formerly Staker’s Lane) - now HSBC. 14. Harpenden Arms Hotel built as the Railway Hotel in 1870 by James Mardall (owner of the Peacock Brewery), the landlord in 1890 was Richard Longland, a wine and spirit dealer, corn and hay merchant, and proprietor of the Livery Stables behind the hotel further up Station Road. 67 61

Andy Hamilton In his 60 years on this planet, comedy writer and performer Andy Hamilton has experienced many changes. For instance, he was once a 6’4ft tall professional basketball player, until a tree fell on him. But, of course, change is an inescapable part of the human condition. Why? Is that fair? Some changes are good, some bad. Why can’t they be more clearly labelled? How did we end up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows go? If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen and the changes yet to come. Contains mild peril. Event start at 7.30pm every day. St Albans Steam and Country Show 2018 Event Opens at 10am with the parade at 2pm at Oaklands College (Smallford Campus) off Hatfield Road (A1057), St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL4 OJA. Our annual event showcases Steam Engines, Vintage Vehicles, Classic Cars and more. The event brings excitement and education to the general public. For youngsters these steaming monsters provide both entertainment and education, a total contrast with the high-tec era of the new millennium we now live in. However, many of the older generation will remember steam rollers at work, while before the last world war steam wagons regularly pounded through St. Albans carrying long distance loads. Steam threshing was carried out at local farms, while steam tractors were used to carry stone, farm produce and even house contents within the area. Some of these machines are now 100 years old, but have been rebuilt many times and will last forever! For more information please visit: www.hertssteam.co.uk

The Life & Music Of Maria Callas CALLAS – The Life & Music of Maria Callas is the world’s first fully staged show with orchestra about the life of legendary opera star Maria Callas. BIG EVENT!

The Harpenden Carnival

BIG EVENT!

The Harpenden Carnival has just celebrated its 50th anniversary, one that sees it firmly established among the social events of the year. The theme of this year’s event is “THE WILD WEST” and this is reflected in the acts which include Wild West Rope Shows, Line dancing, Rodeo, Archery and many more activities in our “Cowboy Corner”. Of course we’re not forgetting our favorites including the Savills sponsored Dog Show, craft stalls, bouncy inflatables, children’s activities along with food and drink. For 2018, we’ve worked with Harpenden Council who have supported our request to create an extended licence to permit the Stage performances to extend to 7pm. Whilst the main arena area will close at 5pm, our visitors will be able to enjoy a slightly later finish on the common outside of the Public Halls. Here the stage entertainment will continue later as well as all of the bars, including Prosecco Bar and Gin Palace and food stalls. With our licence covering this whole part of the common our visitors will be able to relax with family in on the beach or in the RoundTable relaxation zone. We’ve pre-ordered fine weather so put June 9th in your diary and bring your friends and family to a great day out. For more information please visit: www.harpendencarnival.com

St Albans Clock Tower Built between 1403 & 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. It was first & foremost a political statement; the townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of St Albans’ Abbey. The Tower’s bell, which has survived over 600 years of use, allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the Curfew. It also gave the alarm in case of “fire or fray”. Its bell rang out the first Battle of St. Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today you can climb to the top of the Tower & enjoy magnificent views of St Albans & the surrounding countryside. Disabled access is difficult as there is a restricted entrance and 93 narrow steps to the top. Open: Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays 10.30am to 5pm from 3rd April to 27th September 2015 Admission: Adults £1, Children Free

SMOKING IN HERTFORDSHIRE DECLINES AS E-CIGARETTE POPULARITY GROWS

Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Richard Roberts, said:“I am delighted that so many Hertfordshire residents have chosen to give up smoking cigarettes. There has been another dramatic reduction this year, congratulations to everyone who has quit or moved on to far less harmful alternatives such as vaping, patches or gum.”

Data from Public Health England show the number of adults in Hertfordshire who smoke has dropped, with only 13.5% of residents smoking in 2016, a decline of 2% on the previous year. The decrease in smoking rates coincides with an increase in popularity of e-cigarettes throughout the country.

One in five of us wrongly think e-cigarettes are equally or more harmful than smoking; nearly half of us don’t realise that e-cigarettes are actually much less harmful than smoking as they don’t contain tobacco or the harmful products of combustion. Whilst the best option is always to quit smoking, e-cigarettes can provide an extremely good alternative for those who aren’t quite ready to give up nicotine entirely or don’t want to.

This National No Smoking Day back in March Hertfordshire County Council was promoting e-cigarettes as a tool to help people quit smoking or reduce smoking if they are not yet ready to quit entirely. Hertfordshire County Council’s innovative policy encourages the use of e-cigarettes and dispels some of the misconceptions associated with e-cigarettes and vaping. The policy reinforces the use of e-cigarettes as a very effective way to quit smoking as they carry significantly lower risks compared to the harm of tobacco. The policy was produced by working with local and national networks, and it was shared with other organisations to provide them with guidance in developing e-cigarette policies of their own. 96

Tobacco is the leading cause of death and disability in Hertfordshire causing 1,500 deaths every year. For information about how local Stop Smoking Services in Hertfordshire can help you give up smoking, including advice about e-cigarettes, please text SMOKEFREE to 80818, call 0800 389 3 998 or visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/stopsmoking

Thai vegetable spring rolls Ingredients: Serves 4 Large lettuce leaves for presentation Filo pastry sheets Thai vegetables (or of your choice) - raw & sliced very thin sweet chilli dip general garnishes Method: Slice your vegetables very thinly, julienne, season and wrap in a thin layer of pastry sheets – glue edges with a touch of olive oil. Leave in fridge to rest & gently toss in a pan with toasted sesame oil. This will colour the outside nicely, and you may have to bake in oven for a further 6/8 mins on 180 to fully cook – but some people like the veggies real crunchy so its up to you! We have garnished with nice large lettuce leaves, and dip can be a gluten free soy, or we have used sweet sticky dipping sauce, the possibilities are endless! Bon appetit ! xx Julietta 100

PARKER

&

VINE

NOT JUST FOR SALADS these salads will be found in the chiller unit & will therefore have a much longer shelf life than our counter salads.

Parker & Vine is Harpenden’s award winning food shop. In 2017 we collected Herfordshire Life’s Food & Drink award for Best Independent Retailer in Hertfordshire and our customers voted us Best Food Shop in the St Albans’ Food & Drink Awards 2017. In autumn & winter we also sell fresh hot soup. Seasonality is our byword and we cook what is naturally available at the relevant time of the year so strawberries & asparagus in their growing seasons & not all year round! Those in the know reserve a Christmas cake & Christmas pudding early. We celebrate Easter, Mother’s & Father’s Days with specials so come in & see what we are doing. Many of our customers think of us only as a destination for lunch but this summer we are hoping to persuade you to think about us differently & change the way you eat at home.We are introducing pre-packed bowls of our fresh salads perfect for family dinning & dinner parties; 102

Finally, we cater for events, large & small, from weddings, big birthdays to family celebrations, when you have not got the time or the inclination to cook; you can re-create our salad counter in your home using our Food To Go service. In autumn & winter our chefs cook A La Carte dinners to your order for you to re-heat at home. Since we opened our doors in 2016 we have been carefully sourcing & steadily expanding our retail range which now includes Spanish, Lebanese, Moroccan & Middle Eastern products, pickles, oils, vinegars, granolas, jams & teas plus daily fresh breads; we can advise you on cooking ideas for our more unusual ingredients & we regularly email recipe ideas to our customers.

Main Course Ingredients

Herb infused feta with

Mandolin thin slices of beetroot Cous cous with herbs & finely cut chilli & fresh mint Block of quality feta Mixed herbs (we have used oregano) Hot pan with olive oil or blow torch Crispy bacon Rapeseed oil drizzle Method: Start with making your cous cous colourful and flavoursome with some lemon zest, fresh mint, chilli, leave to oneside. Slice your beetroot with a mandolin to make nice paper thin slices, or you can simply cut in a more rustic shape. Get a nice quality block of feta, cut through the middle to make it thinner but keep the block shape, and here you can either heat a pan with olive oil and brown off of the feta, sprinkle with herbs, or simply use your blow torch (see our instagram page No.7Catering) – arrange nicely on the plate with your crispy bacon – or pancetta as garnish. The sweetness of the beetroot and the saltiness of the bacon & creaminess of the feta really is a treat!

CHECK RESTAURANTS’ HYGIENE RATINGS Under the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, St Albans City and District Council inspects local food businesses for compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations and gives them a score. The food hygiene ratings run from 0-5, with five representing a very good level of hygiene and a zero indicating that urgent improvement is required. The Council puts all its ratings on the Food Standards Agency’s website at: www.food.gov.uk/ratings. Local restaurants and food businesses are also given a Food Standards Agency green and black sticker to display on their windows; the sticker shows their food hygiene rating. You can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look or by how romantic the décor and ambience is. It’s the things you can’t see, like germs spread by bad hygiene practices, that you need to consider when booking a restaurant. There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest - check the food hygiene rating. If there is no green and black sticker in the window or you spot a low rating online, you can make an informed choice about where to book.

COOKING ACADEMY & CATERING SERVICES

Catriona Stewart, head of the Food Hygiene Ratings Team at the Food Standards Agency, said, “On Valentine’s Day people are focused on making sure that special lunch or dinner goes well and that they make a good impression with their date. We want them to factor in the food hygiene rating when deciding where to go and then enjoy their romantic meal out.” Nationally, 92% of food businesses are rated a three or higher so there are plenty of places with good food hygiene standards, you can choose from. This means you can easily avoid taking your special date to those places not meeting the grade. According to the Food Standards Agency, thousands of food businesses displaying a three to five rating say it made a positive difference to their business. Businesses can find out more about making the most of their hygiene ratings at www.food.gov.uk/business-industry/caterers/hygieneratings

Homes

TIME TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR WARDROBE! In the UK we spend on average £1,800 each year on clothes and the average household has £4000 worth of clothes – (30% of those haven’t been worn in the last year.) More than 30% of our clothing goes to landfill, with nearly half of us putting some clothing in the bin; all clothing can either be re-used or recycled. If clothing is in good condition but is no longer of use to you, you could: • Pass it on, exchange or share unwanted clothes with friends and family. • Unwanted clothing has a value; why not sell them online, at a car boot sale or via Cash for Clothes • Donate clothing to charity shops or through collection services offered by charities, local councils, retailers and other organisations. • If you are fundraising for your school, church, workplace, sports club or organisations such as Girl Guides, or Scouts, there are textile companies who can arrange a textile collection to help you to raise money for your cause. Clothing that isn’t in good enough condition to be reused can be recycled into other things. There are various recycling points in the local area situated car parks and at local supermarkets. It’s time to get sorting!

HOW TO KEEP THE FLIES OUT OF YOUR HOME THIS SUMMER! I love summer, but my one bug (no pun intended) bare is the flies; annoying and unhygienic, I cannot stand them buzzing through every open window and door. This year I thought I’d try some natural remedies to keep them at bay; fingers crossed one of them will work….and if they don’t, at least my home will smell nice! 1. Basil Apparently flies do not like the strong smell. You can also plant mint, lavender or marigold in your garden to get rid of flies outside. 2. Essential Oils Essential oils, such as lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemon grass, not only possess gentle aroma, but they also work effectively in keeping away the house flies. Spraying such oils around your home should keep you fly free.

4.Apple Cider Vinegar Put some apple cider vinegar in a bowl; to create some surface tension, add some washing up liquid. The flies will be attracted to the smell, but won’t be able to escape. 5. Cucumbers Placing cucumber slices on the top of your rubbish bin is an effective way that prevents flies from laying their eggs there – again, it’s the smell they don’t like.

3.Apple and Clove If all else fails, you could always try a good old-fashioned fly Apparently, flies cannot& bear smell of cloves; an swat. You can go traditional, Claridge Hall the Roofing half pagestud ad.pdf 1 15/06/2017 15:29 or if you, like my husband, like apple with cloves and hang around the home. a gadget you can get electric versions!

RECYCLING PERFORMANCE SOARS, BUT HOW ARE WE DOING? St Albans City and District Council is on track to becoming one of the top ten recycling local authorities in England. Government figures show that the Council’s performance for the year to the end of March 2017 saw it soar from 56th to 26th in a table of 350 local authorities Its annual recycling rate – as measure by weight - increased to 57.5% from the previous year’s 52.2%. Since then, the rate has increased further to 59.4% for the whole of 2017 – close to the target rate of 60%-plus which could put the Council in the country’s top 10. So how are we doing in Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Redbourn??? Research undertaken between July and September last year gives estimates of recycling levels in our area.

*Flats don’t have green waste collections, and some areas have more flats than others. The figures in green, therefore, show a better like for like comparison. Across the District, research suggests that nearly 40% of what is being thrown in the rubbish bin each week could be recycled. The biggest proportion of this is food waste (26%).

The Council is on a mission to make the district a top recycling area. They need everyone to get involved. Some people are telling the Council that they are able to recycle over 90% of their waste, so we know it’s possible. Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The new waste collection service that was rolled out in the summer of 2016 has been a great success and supported by residents.

“We are now tantalisingly close to achieving our ambition of a 60%-plus recycling rate and will be trying very hard to get over the line during 2018. “There are a number of initiatives that we are pursuing, including encouraging more food waste recycling, and we hope our residents will back us all the way. It will be a great achievement for the District if we can become one of the country’s top ten performers. “Recycling not only conserves resources and protects the environment, it also saves the Council money with landfill becoming increasingly expensive.”

MAKE YOUR CAR SPARKLE THIS SPRING • Always wash your car in the shade! This will keep your car wash shampoo from drying on the car before it is rinsed off. • Use two buckets; one is for your shampoo solution and the other is clean rinse water. • Fill a 5-gallon bucket 2/3 full with cool water. Add the proper amount of shampoo to the water as recommended on the label instructions. Using a strong jet of water, fill the bucket to fully activate suds. Fill the second bucket with clean, water for rinsing. • Thoroughly rinse the vehicle’s surface to remove the loose dirt and grime before you begin. • When washing your vehicle remember to always go from top to bottom, never the opposite. Generally the dirtiest parts of your vehicle are those parts closest to the ground.

• Load up your wash cloth with your car wash solution and wring it out over the wash surface. This acts like a pre-soak and helps loosen surface dirt. • Keep your wash areas small and rinse your wash cloth frequently in the second bucket. • Wash in straight, overlapping lines as opposed to circles and remember to be gentle. • Rinse your vehicle with clean water. • When you dry your car gently dry the surface without much pressure. You don’t need to rub the surface – you’re just picking up the bulk of the water! Once you have picked up the bulk of the water, & the first towel is saturated, use a second towel to lightly pick up any remaining streaks or droplets.
