GUY JOHNSTONE JOINS HERTFORDSHIRE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA TO CELEBRATE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE A-T SOCIETY For 30 years, the Harpenden-based A-T Society has provided information, support and hope to families across the UK and beyond for people living with ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T). From early childhood A-T causes increasing physical disability, leaving children severely disabled by their teens. Immunological problems make them vulnerable to infections and to cancer, giving them an average life expectancy is in the mid-twenties, due to the fact that there is currently no effective treatments. The A-T Society provides direct support to ensure that people with A-T live the best lives they can. It established the world’s first specialist A-T clinic and is now coordinating and funding international research efforts to find treatments and a cure. More information can be found at www.atsociety.org.uk. The fund raising concert by Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by James Murray and features Harpenden’s own star ‘cellist Guy Johnston, former winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year,

ST ALBANS CLOCK TOWER REPAIR The historic 15th Century Clock Tower in St Albans has undergone successful repair work to its structure. St Albans’ Clock Tower is the only surviving medieval town belfry in England and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The people of St Albans built the tower between 1403 and 1412 as a symbol of their resistance against the power of the abbot of St Albans. The Tower allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the curfew. The Clock Tower’s bell rang out for the first Battle of St Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today, the tower - and its 600 year old bell - still stands face to face with the abbey’s tower and provides fantastic views across over St Albans and far into the Hertfordshire countryside. A survey had revealed that the mortar holding the stone walls of the building together was badly weathered and had begun to decay. Contractors working for St Albans City and District Council, which owns the only medieval town belfry left in England, have now repointed the walls. It is open to the public from Easter until the end of September and those able to climb its 93 steps up a narrow staircase can enjoy wonderful views of St Albans. For opening times please visit www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk/visit/clock-tower
Other maintenance work recently carried out by the Council includes the resurfacing of a crumbling footpath in Verulamium Park. This is located on the west side of the lake, close to the splash park.
Councillor Julian Daly, Portfolio Holder for Commercial and Development, said: “The Clock Tower is one the oldest and most important of all the buildings in St Albans and is a symbol of the City.
Major footpath resurfacing was also carried out at Fleetville Recreation Ground, partly funded by S106 payments. That is money provided for community infrastructure by property developers in recognition of the impact new housing and other buildings can have.
“It is a major attraction with thousands visiting it every year. It is no coincidence that it features in most publicity photographs and films about St Albans. “I am very pleased that a problem with its structure was quickly identified and repaired. It’s good that the work has been completed in time for Christmas as this year the Clock Tower is being illuminated as part of the City’s festive lights show.” 6
Forthcoming projects include footpath repairs in Clarence Park and the completion of resurfacing work at Westminster Lodge running track. Cllr Daly said: “It’s vitally important that we maintain our parks, sport facilities and other community assets in good condition. A lot goes on behind the scenes to do this work and I thank the team who do it.”

But we want to encourage even more people to sign up and benefit from being part of NHW. The OWL system has brought NHW into the 21st century and makes it harder for criminals to operate as well as helping to improve community spirit across the county.”
Neighbourhood Watch membership up to 140,000 in Hertfordshire.
With more than 140,000 households in Hertfordshire having already signed up to receive emails about crimes in their local area – why don’t you join them? The emails are sent by local policing teams to residents signed up to Neighbourhood Watch via the Online Watch Link (OWL). Chair of Herts Watch (the umbrella organisation for NHW across Hertfordshire) Sue Thompson, said: “Residents don’t have to do anything other than act on any crime prevention advice sent to them, which range from burglaries or thefts in their local area to details of missing people, and encourages them to report any suspicious incidents or behaviour that they may have seen.” She said:“We think we have the largest NHW membership in the country, and have recently increased membership to 140,000 Hertfordshire homes.
There are many examples of NHW keeping residents safer. NHW prevented a pensioner from being scammed –he was close to sending £15,000 of his life savings to a convincing con artist pretending to be from his bank – but thought twice after seeing an email message from Neighbourhood Watch warning him about the scam. Hertfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, David Lloyd said: “The scheme promotes community spirit and ultimately makes the county safer, supporting the ethos behind my Community Safety and Criminal Justice plan keeping neighbourhoods safe is everybody’s business. “I want to continue to ensure that we make the most of our links with the various watch schemes that operate across Hertfordshire and look for opportunities to continue the technology of OWL to drive forward the prevention of crimes.”

SOME FACTS ABOUT... Naming January - Janus’ Month January is named after the Roman god, Janus, the god of doors because this month is the door to the year. The Roman god Janus represents all beginnings and possesses the ability to see all things past and future.
• • • •
Middle English - Januarie Latin name - Ianuarius French - Janvier Saxon - Wulf-monath - wolf month
History of January The month of January was added to the Roman calendar by Numa Pompilius around 700 BCE so that the calendar would equal a standard lunar year of 355 days. January became the first month of the year around 450 BCE, although March was originally the first month of the year in the old Roman calendar. January originally consisted of 30 days when it was added to the 10-month Roman calendar. However, a day was added making it 31 days long in 46 BCE by Julius Caesar.
10 10
First Month in the Year January is considered the coldest month of the year in most of the Northern Hemisphere and the warmest month of the year in most of the Southern Hemisphere. January starts on the same day of the week as October and ends on the same day of the week as February and October in common years. During leap years, January starts on the same day of the week as April and July, and ends on the same day of the week as July. Birth Flower and Stone January’s birth flower is the Dianthus caryophyllus or Galanthus. The birthstone for January is the garnet which symbolises constancy.

DRY JANUARY
Dry January is the perfect way to reset your relationship with alcohol.
Here’s a few of the benefits: 1. You may lose weight
It’s no secret that alcohol is loaded with calories. At 7 calories per gram, a standard glass of wine (5 ounces) can contain about 130 calories, and a serving of beer (12 ounces) nearly 330 calories.
It only takes three weeks to break a habit, so this could be your route to happier, 2. You’ll get deeper sleep It’s true that a nightcap can help you doze off faster, healthier drinking long-term. Alcohol is linked with more than 60 health conditions, including liver disease, high blood pressure, depression and seven types of cancer. In fact, alcohol is the biggest cause of death for people aged 15-49 in the UK. Cutting back on alcohol reduces your risk of developing these conditions. The UK’s top doctors (they’re called the Chief Medical Officers) recommend drinking no more than 14 units per week, spread over three or more days, and with at least two days off. The good news is that Dry January is the perfect training ground for helping you cut down from February onwards! Cutting down permanently is, for many people, very hard, because habits are hard to break. Dry January is an excellent way of learning what your habits are and how to break them, enabling you to cut down longer-term. You can think of it as a bootcamp for drinking self-control! 14
but according to a 2013 study, alcohol disrupts the most restorative phase of sleep that occurs later in the night. 3. You could kick a cold faster
Alcohol can suppress your immune system, which might hinder your ability to fight off an illness. Even one night of too much drinking—in this case, drinking until you’re drunk—can interfere with your body’s ability to produce cytokines, or chemicals that help fight off infections. 4. Your skin might look younger
Alcohol can act as a diuretic, which can increase fluid loss and lead to dehydration, possibly damaging the skin, plus, when people stop drinking, they get more calories from foods; this tends to improve their vitamin intake, which can also make their skin appear healthier. 5. You’ll get better at resisting peer pressure
The participants in a Dry January study, not only drank less later in the year, but also felt more confident turning down drinks. 6. More money in your pocket
The average person spends £50,000 on booze in their lifetime Alcohol Change UK is a leading UK alcohol charity, formed from the merge of Alcohol Concern and Alcohol Research who can offer help and support. For more information about alcohol and support please visit: www.alcoholchange.org.uk

It’s the time to reflect on the changes you need to make and commit yourself to seeing it through – it’s time to make a New Year’s Resolution! Self improvement, or at least the desire for it, is a goal shared by all Australians, which is why so many of us make a New Year’s Resolution in the first place.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS - Continued While most people try to do something about their health or wellbeing, experts suggest that by making a few small changes, you could also make your bank balance healthier. For example, cutting down on takeaways and those other little indulgences such as glasses of wine and instead making a meal plan for the whole week, could help you save money too. Other tips include ditching the expensive gym membership that you never use and instead going for walks, taking the stairs instead of the lift and watching fitness videos on YouTube (all free!). A poll of 2,000 British people, published by Bupa, found that of those who said they would be setting a New Year’s resolution for 2017, half were not confident they would stick to it. In a bid to counter this trend, 52 per cent said that setting small, more achievable goals will help them stick to their New Year’s resolution. Around one in five people also admitted to setting overly ambitious, potentially unsustainable goals. More women (58 per cent) than men (45 per cent) say setting smaller and realistic goals will help them keep their New Year’s resolutions, while more men (26 per cent) than women (21 per cent) say technology is the key to helping them keep their goals on track. There is help online from a number of website that can help you, such as: Exercise - www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/free-fitness-ideas Cutting down on Alcohol - www.drinkaware.co.uk Eat Well - www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well Whatever you resolution, we wish you good luck and a happy, healthier 2019!

Health LOOK AFTER YOURSELF THIS WINTER In the UK, around 25,000 more people die over the course of each winter compared to other times of the year. That’s why Hertfordshire County Council is urging people to take practical steps to help them stay well this winter. There are a range of conditions worsened by the cold weather - including respiratory conditions like severe asthma and COPD; circulatory illnesses such as heart disease and stroke; kidney disease; diabetes and dementia. Those who are older, pregnant, carers and very young children are also more at risk in winter. The Stay Well This Winter campaign encourages people most at risk from cold weather to take some simple precautions to help them prepare for the lower temperatures. Local pharmacists can offer free, qualified health advice at any time, and no appointment is necessary. From coughs and colds to aches and pains, they can give expert help on everyday illnesses and answer questions about prescribed and over the counter medicines. Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Localism and Libraries, Teresa Heritage, said: “With winter on the way, there are important things we can all do to keep ourselves healthy during the winter months. “If you qualify for the free flu jab, get it now before it’s too late – it’s the best way to protect yourself. “Cold and damp homes can contribute to poor health so make sure you heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F) and keep windows closed at night. Help to make sure your home is energy efficient is available by calling 0300 123 4044. “If you do start to feel ill, seek immediate advice from a pharmacist before your condition gets more serious.” 52
There are also other practical dangers when the weather gets cold such as icy pavements, which lead to an increase in slips and falls, particularly amongst the elderly so take extra care outside. Look after you and your loved ones by eating and drinking well, taking exercise, socialising with others and making sure you have stocks of food and medicines at home. If you’re worried about someone or need help yourself, Call HertsHelp on 0300 123 4044, email info@hertshelp.net or visit www.hertfordshire. gov.uk/winterhealth If you don’t fall into one of the at risk groups but want a flu jab, they are available at many local supermarkets and pharmacies for a small fee. If you would like to sign up to receive regular updates about your health and wellbeing, visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/updateme

SPECIALIST BACK PAIN TREATMENT NOW AVAILABLE IN HARPENDEN Good news for frustrated back pain sufferers! Harpenden Sports + Spinal have joined the IDD Therapy network. We can now offer an advanced treatment for spinal disc problems that is not widely available.
They may have a disc problem that needs more than manual therapy or exercise to deal with their pain. With IDD Therapy, we now have a tool which enables us to do far more for our patients, a serious option to consider before going down the surgery route.” IDD Therapy is non-invasive. It targets specific spinal segments, safely and gently using a stateof-the-art machine called an Accu SPINA. It works by taking pressure off spinal discs, which may be “bulging” or “herniated” and pressing on nerves causing pain, such as sciatica. The clinic offers a free 15-minute consultation for anyone who wants to get an understanding of whether IDD Therapy may be suitable.
The practice is run by two long-established clinicians, osteopath Gillian Brown and physiotherapist Garry O’Dell. Gillian says: “We wanted the IDD Therapy because it enables us to help patients who are often in severe pain which affects their lives. 72 54

Main Course
7 hour Slow Roast Leg of Lamb Prep: 15 mins Cook: 7 hrs, 30 mins Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1 large leg of lamb, about 3kg/6lb 8oz 4 onions, sliced 8 garlic cloves, peeled, left whole 4 carrots, leave whole if small or quarter lengthways 300ml white wine 300ml stock, use what you have Thyme sprigs to finish 60
Method: Preheat Oven to to 120C/fan 100C/gas ½ Put your largest lidded casserole on the hob and brown the seasoned leg of lamb on all sides. Make sure you do this thoroughly until it is a good dark brown as it will not brown in the oven. If the lamb sticks, add a drizzle of oil. Allow 10 minutes on a high heat. Pour away any fat that has collected in the bottom of the pan. Throw in the vegetables, followed by the wine and stock. Season and bring to the boil, then put the lid of the casserole dish on and put in the oven. Bake for 7 hours, turning twice during the cooking process. There is no need to rest the meat when it is cooked in this way, so you can serve straight away. Serve with potatoes, garden vegetables and a sprig of thyme.
Baked Cheesecake with Crumble Topping
Dessert
Prep: 50 minutes, plus 3 hours chilling Cooking time: 50 minutes to 60 minutes Total time: 280 minutes to 290 minutes
Method Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4.
Ingredients - Serves 8:
Take a 25cm tart tin that’s at least 5cm deep and has a removable base, line with the pastry and chill for half an hour. Prick the base all over with a fork, line with baking parchment, & weight down with baking beans.
Crumble 30g caster sugar 60g butter 125g plain flour 375g dessert shortcrust pastry Filling: 500g ricotta 85g soured cream 4 medium eggs, separated 200g caster sugar 1 lemon, finely grated zest, plus 1 tbsp juice 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp plain flour
Cook for 12 minutes, then remove the beans and paper and return the pastry case to the oven. Bake for a further 7 minutes until dry. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Reduce the heat of the oven to 170°C, gas mark 3.To make the filling, beat the ricotta with the soured cream. Beat the egg yolks with the caster sugar until pale, then add to the cheese mixture, also mixing in the lemon zest and juice and vanilla extract. Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Sift the flour over the ricotta mixture, then fold it in along with the egg whites. Spoon the filling into the pastry case. To make the crumble mixture, rub the butter into the flour, then stir in the sugar. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the surface of the cheesecake. Bake for about 50 minutes to one hour, until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Turn off the oven, leaving the door slightly ajar, and allow the cheesecake to cool in the oven, then chill it for at least 3 hours before serving.

GRITTY STUFF!
As winter sets in and the temperatures start to drop, we tend to think about cosy nights at home keeping warm, but spare a thought for the army of road workers, gritter drivers and control centre staff who work through the darkness to deal with incidents, repairs, and maintenance to keep our roads safe. Gritting the roads is the best defence against ice and snow and even though gritters are deployed more than once some nights, road users still need to remain vigilant and adjust their driving to the road conditions.

DON’T HAVE A RUBBISH CHRISTMAS! How to dispose of your Christmas tree
Christmas Food Waste
If you live in a house, your real Christmas tree can be put out for recycling. Put it to the side of your garden waste bin, on either your first or second collection after Christmas. The crews can’t collect large trees with trunk diameter of more than tw inches, as these will not compost easily.
Please use your kerbside caddy, so food waste can be turned into fertiliser rather than sent to the tip. Food waste is heavy and costs around £100 per tonne to send to landfill. Please recycle as much as possible. Food waste is collected every week. If you live in a flat, please empty your kitchen caddy into the shared food waste bin in your communal recycling area. Replacement compostable liners can be bought from local supermarkets or you can use paper bags.
After this time, or if you have a large tree, please take it to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre. See page 78 to find your local Centre. Please remove all decorations first! If you live in a flat, please don’t leave your tree in the bin area. Please take it to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Some garden centres will collect your tree for a small fee such as Ayletts – 01727 822255.

TOP 10 GARDENING JOBS FOR JANUARY
(ADVICE FROM THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY) In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximize light. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce for them over winter. You can also start planning next year’s vegetable plot.
1 Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch 2 Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days 3 Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already 4 Repair and re-shape lawn edges 5 Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out 6 Prune apple and pear trees 7 Start forcing rhubarb 8 Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season 9 Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds 10 Prepare a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect them from peach leaf curl

Motors Everyone who uses a vehicle on the road must keep it in a roadworthy condition; the MOT test checks that vehicles meet road safety and environmental standards. The first MOT test for a vehicle is required when it’s three years old (there are different rules if it’s used as a taxi.)
