Summer 2021 Contents Welcome to the Summer Edition of “What’s On Herts” published by Your Local Media. The sun has been shining and with restrictions loosening, hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come. We welcome back our “Diary of Events” section, however as always, please double check that the event is still going ahead before you leave home and update yourself of any changing restrictions. We compile the listings months before that actual event, so despite all our best efforts, if there has been any changes by the event organisers, we will only have access to the information at the time of printing and therefore might be out of date by the actual time of the event so PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE YOU GO! In the magazine we also have a full packed “Homes” sections, so if you are planning a bitrenovation, you’ll find all the numbers you’ll need and if you fancy a holiday, there’s a few ideas on pages 18 and 22 Our magazine can be viewed online by visiting www.harpendendirectory.co.uk and search “What’s On “ so if you leave home without it, you can view it on your phone. Stay safe and well, Your Local Media.

BOWLING AGAIN! The Redbourn Bowls Club was established in 2005 when all-weather bowls green was opened at (then) Redbourn Recreation Centre. Bowling is a great sport that can be enjoyed irrespective of age, gender or prior experience. After the 2020 season was written off because of the pandemic, members were delighted to be able to start bowling again when restrictions were eased on 29th March. This season we have 26 matches against other bowls clubs, a full programme of internal competitions and plenty of opportunities for purely social bowling. As long as the pandemic continues, the club will follow the guidance and protocols of Bowls England to ensure that participation is not only enjoyable but safe. New members will be welcome at any time.

Harpenden Town Council now owns Rothamsted Park after finalising the acquisition from St Albans City & District Council on 30 April 2021. The transfer of ownership will bring numerous benefits to Harpenden residents and users of Rothamsted Park, with the Town Council planning significant financial investments and biodiversity enhancements. Residents will see an immediate impact from the new ownership, with Harpenden Town Council investing £150,000 into the redevelopment of the Rothamsted Park Play Area. The Town Council is working in partnership with Playground Action Rothamsted Committee (PARC), a group of local residents who for a long time have driven forward the vision for the project and have fundraised more than £110k themselves. Residents should be hugely grateful to the outstanding work of PARC in getting the project to this stage. Work on the £250k play area is set to commence in June, with an estimated opening date of late July for the new play area. We are really excited to be able to deliver this new play area within just a few months of taking ownership of the park. - Continued on page 10.

New route to pain Relief in Harpenden

FREE 15 MINUTE

Back Pain Consultation Quote W15

Discover the non-invasive solution Does this describe you? • You have been diagnosed with a slipped disc in your neck or lower back. • You are having a nightmare trying to do normal things like sitting, walking and getting dressed. • The pain is disturbing your sleep and you constantly taking painkillers. • You have tried other treatments like physiotherapy or osteopathy, and where disappointed that they did not work for you. • You are looking for a long term solution but would like to avoid surgery

Gillian Brown, Osteopath and co-owner of Harpenden Sportsnspinal clinic helps many patients find a solution to their unresolved back and neck pain using IDD therapy (Intervertebral disc decompression). This cutting-edge medical technology deals with more severe spinal issues that require more than manual therapy. Don’t take our word for it.... Colin, Hitchin: "IDD Therapy was my last resort after over a year of excruciating leg and back pain. The pain was affecting both my work and sleeping and making me feel depressed. I found the treatment very relaxing and even fell asleep during treatments. It has been life-changing and after 15 sessions I am now pain free. I would highly recommend to you if you have sciatica“ Monica, Harpenden: "After 2 years of not being able to compete at my favourite sport, tennis, I have finally found a treatment that is getting me active again. Gillian Brown at Sportsnspinal in Harpenden recommended this brilliant method of traction using the latest technology called IDD. It's helping release the pressure on my lower back discs and the results are phenomenal. I've gone from being scared to run to competing at international level in a year. I get to lie down on the machine for 26 mins of chill time while it works its magic. No regrets here" John, Harpenden: "I have been extremely pleased with my IDD Therapy Disc Treatment. The way it targets the problem areas has significantly improved my back. I felt better after 3 sessions and carried on improving over the 8 sessions to the point that I am now essentially pain free."

Continued from page 8 The play area is just the start of a number of improvements projects that the Town Council will be making. We have also allocated significant funding to: - Develop a new 3G pitch on the site that will provide first class facilities for junior football and sport in the Town. • Build a new community pavilion to replace the two existing structures that are in a very poor state of repair. • Make improvements to the grass sports pitches so that they are of a higher quality and are less susceptible to bad winter weather. • Refresh the signage across the site. • Increase the number of benches and bins. All of our planned improvements will be set out in a new management plan for the site that will be developed during 2021. At the heart of this management plan will be a focus on biodiversity and making environmental improvements in the park. We will carry out community engagement on the management plan later this year and look forward to receiving ideas from residents. Harpenden Town Mayor Cllr Paul Cousin said,“The Town Council is delighted to have taken ownership of Rothamsted Park. The park is an invaluable and much-loved asset for our local community, and this transfer will enable us to deliver significant improvements in the years ahead to ensure it is an outstanding and engaging open space for everyone to enjoy.” The Rothamsted Park transfer does not include the new Leisure and Culture Centres, depot building, or car parks, which will all remain under the ownership of St Albans City & District Council. Any queries regarding the transfer of ownership can be directed to: Harpenden.Town.Council@harpenden.gov.uk

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile. I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful corona virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit. When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of

supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help again”.

All C2C employees operate a strict social distancing policy.

HARPENDEN TRUST THANKS COMMUNITY FOR RECORD BREAKING APPEAL TOTAL

The Harpenden Trust has announced that thanks to the generosity of local residents and businesses, the total for its annual Care Fund Christmas Appeal stands at just under £65,000 – more than any other year previously. Over the past year, donations to the Harpenden Trust’s Care Fund have enabled the Trust to help the community in a wide variety of ways. These include setting up the Harpenden Cares Contact Centre to answer over 2,000 calls for Covid-19 Pandemic support and assisting over 12 local GP practices with delivering oxygen monitors to local residents. In addition, the Trust has provided financial and practical support to over 565 local families, utility grants to over 80 local residents on low pensions and given befriending support to over 70 people in need of it – a number that continues to rise. The annual Christmas Appeal is the main fundraising opportunity for the Harpenden Trust’s Care Fund. However, Covid-19 restrictions over the past year have meant that traditional fundraising activities, such the door-to-door collection, were not possible, making the Appeal total even more remarkable. As restrictions lift, the Harpenden Trust will also seek to reinstate their popular coffee mornings and outings for various sectors of the community, including seniors and families. As well as the activities of the Care Fund, the Harpenden Trust is also currently playing a key role in the community in supporting the local GPs surgeries in organising the roll out of COVID-19 vaccinations in Harpenden.

THERE’S A NEW SHOP IN TOWN!

You may recognise their faces from our Farmer’s Market, and if not, meet Henry and Farhana. They’ve recently opened a new retail experience unlike anything we’ve seen in Harpenden before. They’ve been running HIH for well over four years now and began with the intention of creating beautiful home fragrances that work for Farhana’s asthma and endless allergies. Henry has worked full-time on the business since almost the very beginning, while Farhana went full-time last year prior to setting up their studio. Before this they worked from a workshop they built at home. While speaking to the pair Farhana joked, “It’s just great having somewhere heated to work from now.”

Having built their own production studio where they hand make their home, bath, body and beauty products, they decided it was critical to offer a space for customers to collect online orders and explore the collection in person.

When they began in 2017 they made just eight products. Now they have a shop with ninety two products, ranging from locally sourced gift cards, to enormous three wicked candles that are ideal table centrepieces. So if you’re looking to support local, shop small and experience ‘slow-shopping’, give this new shop a visit.

Since the last lockdown was lifted, they’ve worked hard to create a cosy, yet minimalist, area of their studio where customers can browse, test and feel at home. Fitted with birch plywood wall panelling and a beautiful marble tulip table to walk around, it’s an extremely warm and welcoming experience. Sectioned off from their production space, it has a comfy emerald green armchair to help you relax and take your time while exploring. When we spoke to Henry, who said “It’s the first time we can invite customers in where our full collection of products can be sampled. We’ve always struggled to describe our scents online, so it’s great to finally invite customers in to browse, where they can get a feel for both the scents and quality of our products.” He also mentioned “With the space we’ve been able to offer additional add-on products, such as artisan chocolates, greeting cards and homeware accessories too.” What were our candle makers doing before their shop? Well, they began as local market traders and ran an online shop, which is still their main focus. 30 30

F I F T Y YEARS OF HELPING HARPENDEN In the late 1960s a group of people met together to consider how to provide neighbourly help in Harpenden. A committee was set up and research done on other similar groups in Hertfordshire, leading eventually to the formation of Harpenden Helping Hand, which held its first AGM fifty years ago on 4th May 1971. Its main aim was ‘to relieve persons ..... in Harpenden......... who are in conditions of need’ and the idea was to have a local Helping Hand in each street. Many residents of Harpenden will no doubt remember the blue and yellow logo of an outstretched hand which was displayed in Helping Hands’ windows. Other volunteers formed a group of HHH drivers who took people to medical appointments and to the shops. Times have changed as has the logo. Over the years it became more difficult to find a Helping Hand for each street in Harpenden and the need for drivers became greater. However, Harpenden Helping Hand’s aims have not changed and the organisation still offers help to those in need, for example transport to medical appointments, 51

collecting prescriptions and shopping as well as providing company for the lonely and housebound. This has proved challenging during the pandemic and various lockdowns as many of the volunteers themselves were self isolating or shielding. Fortunately, a core group was able to continue volunteering and some new volunteers have come forward to help with the gradually increasing need for shoppers and drivers. The Harpenden Helping Hand Coordinators are grateful to all of the volunteers, those already members and those who transitioned from Harpenden Cares at the beginning of this year, for continually shopping as well as driving – mostly weekly – for the residents of Harpenden. Their consideration and kindness for others should not go unrecognised. Later this year Harpenden Helping Hand is looking forward to holding its fiftieth AGM and celebrating fifty years of serving the community of Harpenden. If anyone is interested in volunteering or would like to find out more, please telephone

ST ALBANS OLD PEOPLE’S TRUST: Support for residents aged 60+ living in Harpenden and across St Albans District

St Albans Old People’s Trust is a small and friendly local charity, whose aim is to help people aged 60 or over across St Albans District who are in need, hardship or distress. In 2020 the Trust spent almost £200,000 on various goods and services that, for all sorts of reasons, older people couldn’t afford to fund themselves. For example: Household Items: Bed, reclining chair, cooker, washing machine, fridge Personal Items: glasses, warm clothing. Mobility aids: Wheelchair, walker, electric scooter Services: regular cleaning, meals on wheels, care alarm Financial support: utility bills. Home: decoration of a room, carpets.

Funerals: a contribution towards costs Moving costs Boilers: a free boiler service each year. The Trust is also in a partnership with St Albans District Council to provide a new boiler at low or no cost via the YES Warmer Homes Scheme. Further qualifying criteria apply. If what you need is not on the list, please call and ask. The Trust cannot pay for gardening, holidays or contribute towards care costs. Mr R, who was moving to an unfurnished flat in Central Harpenden, was helped with moving costs, carpeting, a washing machine, fridge freezer and cooker for a total cost of £2200. The Trust has a simple application form, which asks about the person’s circumstances: every application is considered on its own merit. Some clients own their own home, have a small private pension, and don’t receive benefits, whereas others may live in rented accommodation, receive Universal credit, Pension Credit or other benefits or may still be working. The Trust approves more than 90% of all applications. The Trust is an independent charity, whose money came from the sale of Glenalmond Nursing Home on King Harry Lane and some substantial legacies, so can often help those turned down by Social Services or the NHS. The friendly, local staff, Kate and Denise, are happy to discuss applications over the phone. The Trust welcomes new applications and decisions are generally made within 10 days. Starter Warm Scallop Caesar Salad Serves 2

Method: Use a heavy pan which heats evenly. Pans that aren’t non stick will give the best browning, and be sure to choose a pan where scallops can be cooked in a single layer. Heat olive oil over medium-high heat about 30 seconds, then add scallops and cook quickly, probably not more than 2 minutes per side. Don’t have the heat too high or the scallops will release moisture and won’t brown properly. (Scallops are better slightly underdone than overdone, so don’t overcook.

Ingredients: • 8 large sea scallops • 4 cups of washed romaine lettuce While scallops cook, assemble lettuce on two serving or mixed leaves plates. Place four scallops on top of lettuce on each plate. • 1-2 tsp. olive oil (depends on your Turn pan to high and put water in, then scrape the bottom pan) of the pan to get any browned bits, keeping heat high to let • 1-2 Table spoons of water some of the water evaporate. After about one minute turn (for larger pan use 2 Table spoons) off heat. Stir in salad dressing and lemon juice and let it get • 3 Table spoons Caesar Salad slightly warm in the hot pan, then pour over salad and serve. Dressing Top with fresh ground black pepper if desired. • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice 54

WHICH SCAM CONTINUED: Some of the coronavirus scams we’ve heard about recently include: • Bogus phishing texts from HMRC claiming the taxman has been forced to issue refunds due to coronavirus and providing a link for readers to ‘calculate their refund’. • Fake messages purporting to be from the government, requesting people pay a fine for breaching the coronavirus lockdown rules. • Emails encouraging people to make financial decisions and use their time during the coronavirus lockdown to invest in bitcoin. • Unsolicited calls from fraudsters offering to enrol vulnerable people on to coronavirus vaccine trials for a fee.

Gardens

LOOK AFTER YOUR BIRD VISITORS

Don’t assume birds don’t need your support in the garden during the summer months. Birds breed in spring and early summer, so by this time of year they are feeding their young and very glad of any extra food you can provide. You’re also giving them a great start on building their energy resources for the colder weather later in the year. And if you can provide a bird bath this is a real lifeline during hot weather – just remember to keep topping it up. What to feed them • Suitable seeds and grains (like nyjer, millet, oats, and sunflower seeds). • Only feed peanuts if they’re unsalted, fresh and sold for human consumption or by a reputable feed shop. To protect chicks from being fed whole nuts and choking, provide peanuts in good quality mesh feeders. • Cooked pasta or rice, boiled potatoes, cheese, uncooked and unsalted bacon rind, raisins and sultanas. • Net-free fat or suet balls attract a wide range of species and provide a great boost of calories. • Apples, pears and soft fruits are popular and are a great autumn food. • Insects such as mealworms or waxworms. Be careful! Grapes, sultanas, raisins and some artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs. Flyer NEW April 2013_Layout 2 15/05/2013 12:04 Page 1

Motors

IDLING... SWITH OFF FOR CLEANER AIR DO YOUR BIT FOR AIR QUALITY Running your engine when you’re not driving it (idling) truly gets you nowhere. It reduces your vehicle’s fuel economy, costs you money and creates pollution which is harmful to health. The trouble is that stationary cars release up to 20 times more exhaust emissions than when the car is moving at 30 mph. These pollutants have detrimental effects on human health and contribute to respiratory illness, cancer and premature deaths. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable. It is estimated that poor air quality leads to 40,000 premature deaths each year in the UK. Compare this to the 1,713 deaths from road traffic accidents and we can see that this is a significant problem. People can be affected by poor air quality even if they never experience any noticeable pollution related-health effects such as breathing problems because some of the effects are chronic and long-term. St Albans City and District Council are committed to reducing unnecessary engine idling as a means to improving local air quality, preventing health impacts and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the ‘Switch Off For Cleaner Air’ campaign we are asking drivers to switch off their engines if they are to be stationary for longer than a minute. We are looking for volunteers to help raise awareness about this important matter locally.

Please visit www.stalbans.gov.uk/anti-idling for details.
