NEW HOME FOR BARBADOS NATIONAL ART GALLERY The Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG) now has a place to call home. This announcement came from Minister with responsibility for Culture, John King, who revealed that after consultation with the BNAG, Cabinet agreed that Block ‘A’, The Garrison, would be reallocated to the Ministry as the permanent home for the gallery. A section of the Old Town Hall Building in Cheapside, Bridgetown, will also be made available for additional exhibition space due to its ease of access to pedestrian traffic. Minister King also indicated that a paper would be submitted to Cabinet detailing a proposal for a public/private partnership to undertake the major repairs and renovations, as well as the out-fitting of both buildings. The public, particularly the artistic community, has long advocated for a national gallery. Successive committees and boards of the BNAG have been working with Government, particularly since 2007, when the Barbados National Art Gallery Act was proclaimed, to make this a reality. Last Friday, members of the Board of the BNAG were on hand to witness the handover of the keys to Block ‘A’, The Garrison, by the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Rural Development to Minister King. During this visit, it was noted that Block ‘A’ was in generally good condition, but transformation of the property, into a world class gallery space, would require significant investment to upgrade the building. The Ministry will be working closely with the National Art Gallery to bring this project to fruition, in the shortest possible time. paula.harper-grant@barbados.gov.bb https://gisbarbados.gov.bb/blog/new-home-for-barbados-art-gallery/

The Barbados National Art Gallery finally has a home! Lots of work to be done but our National Collection has a place (in fact 2 places) to call home. Congratulations to all that helped make it happen. ”The Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG) was delighted to receive the news that Block A at St. Ann’s Garrison is now its new home! Small Island Developing States are home to less than 2% of museums in the world, and with the impact of COVID19, it is estimated that 10% of museums worldwide that closed during national lockdowns will never reopen. This makes the presence of a Barbados National Art Gallery a beacon of hope amongst the devastation brought on by a global pandemic. The Minister with responsibility for Culture, the Hon. John King has informed that the Cabinet, after consultation with the BNAG Board, has agreed that Block ‘A’, the Garrison is to be reallocated to the Ministry as the permanent home of the Gallery while a section of the Old Town Hall Building in Bridgetown will be made available for additional exhibition space. The public of Barbados, and particularly the artistic community, has long advocated for a national gallery, most consistently since 2000. Successive committees and boards of the BNAG have been working with the Government since 2009 when the Barbados National Art Gallery Act was proclaimed, to make this a reality. It was a joyous conclusion to a site visit on Friday, July 17th, 2020 when the keys to Block ‘A’, were handed over by the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Rural Development to the Minister with responsibility for Culture, the Hon. John King, M.P. Follow the social media of the BNAG @barbadosnationalartgallery on Facebook and Instagram as we share further developments!” -BNAG
Barbados National Art Gallery Featured Artist Every other week, we highlight artwork from the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, alphabetically by the artist’s surname. Risée Chaderton-Charles “Sunday Service” 2008 Photographic Print on Paper 56 x 77 cm Framed
“Sunday Service” is a striking black and white photograph depicting All Saints Church, St. Peter in the background at the end of a path, from a low angle. In the fore and middle ground are two female figures with hats and handbags walking toward the church vestibule, which is decorated with a stone cross at top. Originally established in 1645, All Saints Church survived hurricanes in 1675 and 1741, but was severely destroyed in the 1831 hurricane. The current Church building was completed in 1843. “Sunday Service” contains dynamic layers, with the quiet aura of a Sunday morning effused by the anticipation of the upcoming church service. The colonial gaze in the history of Caribbean photography has typically shaped image archives in Barbados, which is arguably also sustained through the tourism-driven “picturesque”. Contemporary Fine Art photographers such as Chaderton challenge this oppressive gaze and offer visual readings of Barbados from a place of shared experience and empathy. This work was featured in the 2009 Annual National Art Gallery Committee Exhibition entitled "Home Drums Beat First and the Bottom Bound To Drop Out", curated by Janice Whittle and Nerys Rudder. About the Artist Risée Chaderton (b.1974) is a Fine Art photographer specializing in documentary, fashion, portraits, wedding and landscape photography. Born in The Bahamas to Barbadian parents, she settled in Barbados at the age of eight. Having completed a degree in Graphic Design at the Barbados Community College, Chaderton worked as a Photojournalist in Barbados and the Caribbean region. Chaderton has exhibited across Barbados including at Queens Park Gallery and at various locations with Artist Alliance Barbados and Tandem. Her work has also been featured in local, regional and international publications including BrideLife Magazine, ZiNG and National Geographic. She has lectured at the University of The West Indies for six years. Barbados National Art Gallery Featured Artist Every other week, we highlight artwork from the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, alphabetically by the artist’s surname. Alison Chapman-Andrews “Falling Leaves No. 2” 2004 Acrylic and mixed media on canvas 42.5 x 32.5cm
“Falling Leaves No. 2” depicts a Christmas palm as seen from the verandah of the artist’s home. A mixed media technique is employed, where before painting, fiber from coconut trees and glue and sawdust are affixed to the canvas, and their textures inform the composition of the work. There is a poetic aspect to the piece, in the depiction of upward movement in the palm with the natural fibres of falling leaves in the foreground, suggesting a cycle of decay and regeneration. Chapman-Andrews’ oeuvre has been a dedication to Barbadian landscapes, and “Falling Leaves No. 2” is part of an extensive series on palms by the artist. This artwork was featured in the exhibition “Barbadiana”, curated by Denyse Menard-Greenidge, which was showcased at contemporary galleries in Paris, Brussels, and Montreal, as well as the Barbados High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, and Queen’s Park Gallery, where it was acquired by the National Art Gallery Committee in 2005. About the Artist Alison Chapman-Andrews (b. 1942) studied at the Walthamstow School of Art in London, as well as the Royal College of Art in London where she was awarded A.R.C.A. in Painting. She was an art educator in the UK, before moving to Barbados in 1971. She taught art at St Michael’s School for twelve years, and was a prolific art writer, notably for exhibition reviews and a Sunday column in the Nation newspaper. She was Vice President of the Art Collection Foundation (Barbados) as well as involved with the Barbados Arts Council. Chapman-Andrews’ oeuvre has been featured in more than 10 solo exhibitions in Barbados, including at Queen’s Park Gallery, Zemicon Gallery, the Morningside Gallery at the Barbados Community College and the Art Foundry. Her work has also been featured in over 20 group exhibitions in Barbados, the Caribbean and internationally, including London, Paris, Ecuador, Curaçao and Trinidad and Tobago. She has represented Barbados in CARIFESTA national exhibitions in 2003, 2006 and 2017, and at the Caribbean and Central American Biennial of Painting, Santo Domingo in 1992, 1994, 1996, where in 1996 she was part of the group of artists awarded gold for the Barbados national submission to the Biennial. Chapman-Andrews has also been awarded purchase awards at the Art Collection Foundation (Barbados), a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and the Crop Over Visual Arts Governor’s Award in 2007. In addition to the Barbados National Art Gallery, her work is held in the collections of the Barbados Gallery of Art, the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the University of West Indies and the Central Bank of Barbados as well as numerous private collections.
ChapmanAndrews’ work is a deeply personal response to nature, expanding across decades of studying and representing the Barbadian landscape. In an artist statement, ChapmanAndrews expresses that: “Although trained in English art schools, my ‘art vocabulary’ was developed in the West Indian landscape. I drew in Barbados and Guyana where the rural environment became my inspiration and my subject. […] The focus of my painting and my life has narrowed and simplified lately. Current works are often single trees, or plants. A Christmas palm in my garden is often seen up close, drawn from observation, and records changes in light or growth. […] The space created, when making art, is the only place where the relentlessness of time passing seems to slow down.” ChapmanAndrews has been a key advocate for the development of a National Art Gallery, and continues to be an active member of the Barbados arts community. ALBERTA WHITTLE : TURNER PRIZE 2020 BURSARY AWARD WINNER SOURCE: https://nickwhittle.tumblr.com Barbados born artist Alberta Whittle is among the 10 artists to receive Turner Prize 2020 bursary awards from Tate Britain in place of this year’s Turner Prize. Here is a description from the artist’s page: “Alberta Whittle is an artist, researcher and curator. She was a RAW Academie Fellow at RAW Material in Dakar in 2018 and is the Margaret Tait Award winner for 2018/9. She is a Committee Member at Transmission Gallery in Glasgow and a Board Member of SCAN (Scottish Creative Art Network). Her creative practice is motivated by the desire to work collectively towards radical self-love. Informed by diasporic conversations, Alberta considers radical self-love and collective care key methods in battling antiblackness. Her practice involves choreographing interactive installations, using film, sculpture and performance as site-specific artworks in public and private spaces.” The Evening Standard reports: The ten British artists who have received £10,000 bursaries from Tate Britain in place of this year’s Turner Prize have today been announced. Tate Britain confirmed last month it would not stage a Turner Prize exhibition this year due to the pandemic. Instead, the Turner Prize jury selected 10 artists to receive bursaries – all of whom were deemed to have made “significant contributions” to contemporary art over the past 12 months. They are all eligible for the Turner prize in the future.
The artists are Edinburgh-based political art group Arika, Ghanian-Russian photographer Liz Johnson Artur, London artist Oreet Ashery, Oxford-based ceramics and performance artist Shawanda Corbett and Glasgow artist Jamie Crewe, who specialises in projects concerning identity. Sculptor Sean Edwards, Alberta Whittle, whose work explores race and colonialism, plus Londoners Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Ima-Abasi Okon and Imran Perretta also won the bursaries. Alex Farquharson, Director of Tate Britain said: “Following a lively and rigorous virtual debate, the jury has settled on a list of ten fantastic artists who reflect the exceptional talent found in contemporary British art. From ceramics to film, performance to photography, they represent the many exciting and interdisciplinary ways that artists work today. These bursaries represent a vote of confidence in that work and offer some much-deserved support in challenging times. We’re extremely grateful to John Booth, Catherine Petitgas and The Ampersand Foundation who generously stepped forward at such short notice to make these bursaries possible.” The members of the 2020 jury included Richard Birkett, Curator at Large at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Sarah Munro, Director of BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Duro Olowu, designer and curator and Fatoş Üstek, Director of Liverpool Biennial. The jury is chaired by Mr Farquharson. The Turner Prize will return to its exhibition format in 2021. This is the first time the often controversial prize has been cancelled in 20 years. It was created in 1984 but was not held in 1990 due to a lack of sponsorship. Normally, judges would have announced a shortlist for the prize in May, inviting the artists to make work for an exhibition opening in the autumn. The winner, who also takes home a £25,000 prize, would be announced in December. Last month Tate Britain, which organises the prize, said: “The tight timetable for preparing for the annual exhibition would not have been achievable under the present restrictions.”
Previous winners have included Antony Gormley (1994), Damien Hirst (1995), Steve McQueen (1999) and Grayson Perry (2003). See artist’s page at https://www.albertawhittle.com/ Art is not for cowards, Esmeray Özatik, Turkey. Nick Whittle is the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for most Original Work, NIFCA 2018. He is a Caribbean Master, CARIFESTA XIII Barbados, 2017. Nick was awarded a Frank Collymore Literary Award for poetry and is co-author of Art in Barbados: What Kind of Mirror Image. He was a member of the National Art Gallery Committee 1998-2008, former Head of Fine Arts, Queen's College, Barbados and past President of the Barbados Secondary Teachers' Union.

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit. Dan Rather

The Brighton Storeroom Gallery presents ‘The Blue’. “Opening night reception of our first post-lockdown exhibition, ‘The Blue’ Sunday 19 July, 5-7pm at The Brighton Storeroom. This exhibition is based on the simple premise of looking at the way in which blue is used by artists and designers in their work. The more complex intention is to encourage visitors to make connections between the works on display and explore how the particular blues chosen affect our response and understanding of individual works. The exhibition is deliberately cross-disciplinary and we hope that seeing the (expected) paintings and prints alongside planes, plants, words, motorbikes and cushions will foster an exciting and thoughtful experience for our audience and increase awareness of the creative process.” https://www.facebook.com/The-Brighton-Storeroom-114548523254454/

The 2020 Studio Art Barbados Fine Arts Portfolio exhibition from Barbados Community College is online! https://studioartbfa.wixsite.com/antidote No exhibition this year, but that didnt stop us... Antidote, the 2020 Studio Art BFA Portfolio exhibition. Online now! Meet the latest group of BCC Studio Art final year students, see their work, learn more about the programme and our dedicated faculty. When the world gives you lemons... The Studio Art BFA programme culminates with a Portfolio exit review. The final year students present a cohesive body of work to their advisors and a guest external examiner. This assessment comes after a series of Advanced Studio courses in which they develop both technical and theoretical aspects of their practice. Finally, a curated exhibition of their best work is unveiled in the Morningside Gallery at the Barbados Community College. The global pandemic gave us an entirely new set of challenges. The programme was thrown into turmoil, but we adapted. The students and faculty found ways to continue. Separated from the studios, the students produced, installed and documented work in their own homes. Though far from ideal, courses went online and the final review was re-conceived as a series of video conferences. After all of this, it is with great pleasure that we present the 2020 Portfolio exhibition, reimagined online. As always, it is a curated selection of what the students have produced. We hope that Antidote will offer some needed relief from all that ails in this moment. But true relief does not come as a candy-coated sugar pill, this is not escapism. This antidote is about interrogation and reflection. If we seek change we must learn to look at ourselves, at how we encounter, construct and navigate our lives. Yes, some of the work has been inspired by recent events, but the thematic concerns were established long before. It is no surprise that the work feels particularly prescient, issues do not suddenly appear out of thin air.... those that look, see. -Ewan Atkinson

Most of Brandon’s life he was convinced he was a drawer, as he saw painting to be very intimidating. It was in 2017 he by chance, discovered his love for oil pastels; 2 years later in November of 2019, he began to discover his painting style. Initially painting on wooden surfaces, his work tends to be inspired from his love for jazz, experimental hip-hop, people he’s seen or worked with from his life as a waiter. The subjects are often bizarre characters boldly taking shape in thick black lines, over colourful backgrounds. Each piece along with their story, guaranteed have a song that helped bring them to life.

INNERSCAPES: exploring identity through existential and introspective lens.
Innnerscapes The issue of identity has long been an integral component of many contemporary artists' practice; and no less so, to the the Caribbean artist. This concern has often been explored from social, cultural and political perspectives. In this exercise, I've primarily asked artist currently working on similar themes, as well as a few others up for the challenge to delve inwards to explore the theme of identity through an existential and introspective lens. An artists' role is often to act as society's mirror, many times addressing issues that remain unsaid by the wider community. AAB curator Oneka Small

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society (BMHS) in partnership with Father Charles CardReynolds is pleased to announce the launch of The Black Presence: Activism and Agency in a Different Age, an exhibition of paintings, prints and engravings from the collections of the BMHS and Father Charles Card-Reynolds examining historical representations of Black Portraiture in the 18th – 20th C as empowerment. The Black Presence: Activism and Agency in a Different Age launches on February 5th, 2020 at the BMHS Cunard Gallery, with an evening reception and lecture by Father Charles CardReynolds in the Walled Garden Theatre from 6pm. The exhibition runs until June 28th, 2020. For more information, please contact the BMHS at 538 0201. This exhibition, launching in African Awareness Month, aims to further facilitate conversations regarding Black Portraiture for shared heritages of African, Caribbean and European regions. Barbados, in particular, has been at the center of debates regarding colonial representations, retentions, and revisions, cultures that have been submerged, and those that have been perpetually hypervisual. By incorporating engravings and prints from a private British collection, with prints and paintings from the BMHS Fine Art collection, The Black Presence invites local engagement and consideration of multiple narratives within art historical Black Portraiture.
At the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. ”Can you help us with an #arthistorymysetry? On display in our temporary exhibition The Black Presence: Activism and Agency in a Different Age is this piece, tentatively called “Portrait of a Young Slave”. This oil on canvas piece is thought to have been created in the 1800s, although no exact date is known and no artist is known. It came into the BMHS collection from the Frank Rickwood Collection in 2011. The chains draped around the woman, although seemingly loose, are symbols of her enslavement, we can also see her hands are bound. There is a strong emotion in this work, with her gaze turned upwards and tears in her eyes. This emotive pose was also reflected in depictions of Baroque martyrs and saints in paintings during that same time. In the painting as it stands now, she is the main focus, centered in the frame. However, the figures to her left indicate this could have been a segment of a much larger painting. When the painting may have been cropped to feature her as the main subject is unknown. This piece is a part of the exhibition The Black Presence: Activism and Agency in a Different Age. It is copyright the BMHS collection and cannot be reproduced without permission.”
