Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events

Twelve years of the publication

All issues https://issuu.com/corriescott

This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.

I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, lasses, workshops, talks etc.

Let’s get the arts out there!

Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

Visualartsbarbadosevents

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

WAYNE BRANCH

Wayne Branch was born and raised in rural St. Joseph, a district tailor-made for the creatively inclined, as reflected in his early works of verdant light-filled landscapes. Initially self taught, Wayne later studied at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Yale University Graduate School of Fine Arts.

Wayne has won many awards and prizes, and his art is in collections locally, regionally and internationally, including the Detroit Institute of Arts museum. He continues to create art which highlights the effect of natural light while expressing the reflective moods, emotion, life and customs of his subjects. A couple of article here on Wayne Branch

CURATORIAL STATEMENT

Our viewpoint is that which influences the way we look at the world around us and determines how we process things within the experiences that make up our lives. Our perspective and by extension our ideologies are how we as artists differentiate ourselves within a crowd.

Art, no matter the form, tells a story. The subject may tell you of their life, their concerns, the things they value or in some cases the things they don't. And the treatment of said subjects may tell you even more. Is it abstracted? Something broken down to its simplest pieces so that you, the viewer, are forced to examine what makes the subject so recognizable, even when broken down to its simplest forms? Is it handled with care? Is approached with a gentle hand and delicate touch that betrays the artist's love for their subject? Or is it harsh and blunt- a subject shown in sharp relief so that you, the viewer, must face the realities of the subject….. good or bad.

Within this collection of exceptional work, we will see similar subjects tackled by artists whose pieces vary drastically, all informed by that thing known as perspective. This doesn't reflect the work's quality, instead it shows us something even more valuable, that even those with similar interests, in similar places, at similar times can create works of art where the focus is different.

A portrait can be rendered realistically with every pore, every scar, every hair delicately placed, every facet of their expression as it would be in life so that we feel we are looking at and learning the person themselves, or, it can be abstracted, leaving us with more of a sense of the person, their energy, and personality through the shapes and textures the artist chooses.

AVARK Incorporated is the husband and wife team of Mark & Ava Daniel; Our name 'Avark' is the combination of the names of the married co-founders. What started out as a small cottage industry has now expanded and been created into a lifestyle company--producing 100% Bajan handcrafted and hand painted one-of-a-kind pieces that range from clothing and soft furnishings to signature bags and designer wall art frames.

The inspiration for the bags originated during a four hour flight layover in Miami in 2009. To pass the time, Mark wonder into store after store and stumbled upon a bag store. Unknowingly, the contents of this store were to become the catalyst and the motivational factor in the pursuit of ‘The Avark Bag’.

On his return home to Barbados, with the image of the postman’s bag in mind he decided to experiment with making one, which he thought could also enhance his male clothing collection and the leather sandals that he already produced.

The bags are first and foremost works of art, and secondly functional. Each bag is totally handcrafted, painted and hand stitched, they have to be seen to be appreciated.

The first showings on runways in New York, London and the Caribbean Fashion Weeks, garnered an overwhelming response. A natural progression of the bags has now expanded into the female collection.

AVARK aims to have all of its products keep their edge so that the designs do not lose their originality and charm.

“Sometimes when you come back from a shoot, and you look at your images, it feels like you are missing a lot of the elements that you saw and felt when you where on location. The camera is a great tool for capturing the core elements of what you experienced at the time, but like every tool it has it's limitations.

“The negative is comparable to the composer’s score and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways.” Ansel Adams

“As humans we live in our bodies. They chronicle our experiences through the passage of time. Lines, wrinkles, scars, moles, scratches. All changes are recorder on our divine vessel. Each distinct culture affords us culture specific experiences. These manifest not only in looks but in demeanour. What is that thing which makes a Bajan easily identifiable to another Bajan without one or the other even opening their mouths?”

HAPPY 56th ANNIVERSARY OF BARBADOS' INDEPENDENCE..!!

“56 years ago, on the night of 29 November 1966, at the age of 13, I climbed up a tree overlooking the Garrison Savannah in Barbados to get a better view of the flag-raising ceremony and declaration of the island's independence at midnight. 50 years later, I painted this ink and watercolour picture of my memory of that event.

I donated the painting to the Barbados Museum and was honoured earlier this month, to be invited by the President of the Independent Republic of Barbados, Dame Sandra Mason, to a reception along with other artists to view the painting that now hangs in State House, Bridgetown. It was chosen, along with others, to replace the lithographs and engravings of former members of the British royal family that had previously been displayed there. Note the umbrellas in the crowd and the sand spread across the muddy parade ground because it had rained heavily. But the rain stopped for the climax of the occasion as seen here as we observe the 56 anniversary of that night!”

Introducing My Bajan Bicycling Landscaper Photography Project

For the past year-and-a half I've been photographing the landscapers who bicycling around the island with their equipment strapped to their bicycles. I've also created a website with biographies of the landscapers I am happy to share if anyone is interested.

Thalassic’ an exhibition by Sadé Payne at Drift Ocean Terrace Lounge,Holetown.

Opening September 27th Opening hours Tues-Sat from 5pm onwards.

“Sadé Payne is a young Barbadian artist whose work is largely inspired by the turbulence of the sea. The 25 year old impressionist whose primary medium is acrylics on canvas uses a combination of gestural brushstrokes and bold textural palette knife marks to depict breathtaking seascapes sceneries, fusing worlds of fantasy with elements of reality.

The artist although having an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from the Barbados Community College describes her artistic style as largely self-taught. Her most recent work not only dares to capture the motion of the sea but also explores the refraction of light above and below the ocean surface and its influence on colors.”

Helping the young talent where we can.

Jeena Chatrani Antilles Gallery.

Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
