The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

The 10th Annual ‘Anonymous Charity Art Show’ opens on Friday, December 6th, 5.30pm-8.30pm.
Proceeds from this year’s show will go to the Barbados Sea Turtle Project. This charity was started in 1987 to promote conservation of sea turtles in Barbados. For
Our WHY behind the Annual Anonymous Art Charity Show - it’s all about supporting the arts while helping the Barbadian community. Each year we choose a charity and this year it is the Barbados Sea Turtle Project
The nesting beach monitoring program is highly regarded as one of the longestrunning hawksbills monitoring programmes in the world. From less than 100 nesting turtles recorded on the island in the 1990s, Barbados now supports over 600 and is recognized internationally as hosting the largest critically endangered hawksbill nesting population in the insular Caribbean. These results are due to the direct conservation actions, public awareness, and research that form the Project’s core.
Each year they rescue tens of thousands of hatchling turtles and respond to over 2000 calls made to a 24-hour Sea Turtle Hotline; a resource that both Barbadians and tourists have come to rely upon and expect.

BOB KISS

Fashion, Beauty and Fine Art of 1980 - 1990
Bob Kiss spent two decades as a fashion, advertising, and celebrity photographer in New York City, and the last three decades as a fine art photographer in Barbados.
These portfolios represent the culmination of over 50 years of carefully edited photography. From the very start, I’ve been captivated by the magic of freezing a moment in time and space, allowing it to be observed, contemplated, and preserved for the future. The wonder of discovering the extraordinary within the ordinary still excites me—transforming it into a photograph and honing my craft to create beautiful, handmade fine art prints in limited editions.
The Photographic Incarnations of Bob Kiss
I have loved photography since I was 12 years old, during my education in high school and at RIT, my two decades as a fashion, advertising, and celebrity photographer, and through my last three decades as a fine art photographer! I have always been fascinated by the spectrum of creative possibilities in photography from absolutely unexpected and found images through carefully constructed photographs with intricate mise en scenes; from capturing the subtleties of natural light through carefully constructed lighting; from appreciation of the image to the sensory, concrete pleasure of the object of art.
From the beginning, the magic of capturing a slice of time and space to be viewed, meditated upon, and saved for the future, enchanted me! And my fascination with light led me to train and work in both photography and film making. As a career I chose photographing fashion, advertising, and celebrities because it is exciting, sexy, and lucrative. When I look at how political the fine art photography gallery scene can be, I feel no guilt whatsoever for my earlier work. It allowed me to afford excellent photographic gear and it taught me incredibly disciplined work habits!
After a nearly fatal horse riding accident while shooting fashion in Brazil I decided to leave the fashion fast lane and move to Barbados where I met and married my wonderful wife Lisa. I had been curating and conserving a number photographic collections and a show by deceased, local photographers when my friend Jeff Rollins said “When you gonna show your own work?”
So I began photographing everything that moved, fascinated, or interested me! I remember I was out extremely early one morning to catch the gorgeous dawn light and I felt guilty that I wasn’t making photographs for clients, for money; I realized I was applying all of my craft and creativity to my own artistic photography instead of to the marketing needs of the client. My wife and I had our first show together of her paintings and my fine art photographs in 1998 titled THE DANCE OF LIGHT. It sold very well. I was shocked, shocked I say, to realize I was earning more selling my fine art photographs than doing commercial photography! You could’ve bowled me over with a feather! Though I’ve continued doing some commercial jobs when they pay well enough, my creative curiosity has led me to widely varied genres of personal, fine art photography. Regardless of your philosophy or religion, one cannot help but feel the wonder of finding the miraculous in the mundane, of re-presenting it as a photograph, and of exercising the craft and creativity of making gorgeous, handmade, fine art, photographic prints.
I also feel great joy in sharing my knowledge and experience with young people who are interested in photography, having taught photography and video production to well over 600 students, on and off over the nearly 30 years that I’ve lived here in Barbados! Bob Kiss

Artist Jill McIntyre painted what was a derelict fishing boat.
It is at the moment on display in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel.
“Thanks to the Barbados Fisheries Division I had an amazing opportunity to paint a derelict fishing boat and bring it back to life! This was not a one-woman job, and I have to send out sincere thanks to Fisheries staff Ryan and Olu for all their help. Special mention must be made of the incredibly talented Faheema Patel (Bdos’ best in calligraphy and free-hand lettering)who painted on the boat’s new name!

An Exhibit to Evoke Love of the Sea
T. S. Jordan
Ascending the steps to the Caribbean Gallery of Art on the coast of Speightstown St. Peter, on the night of the annual Carmichael Prize Exhibit, I could hear the buzz of a gathering of excited people. I immediately knew two things: one, it was well attended and two, the artists did not disappoint.
Upon entering, the bright, spacious gallery was alive with smiling people wall to wall, examining art work, chatting and drinking wine, as were the walls filled with beautiful art linked to the theme, ‘Barbados and the Beautiful Ocean’. The atmosphere was one of delight which I attributed to the combination of visual and culinary art that created a real feast for the senses.
This was the 24th annual Carmichael Prize Exhibit, an art event patroned by its namesake, Sir Trevor Carmichael, a Barbadian and prominent figure in the regional and international legal arena with a love of art. The exhibit is aimed at the promotion and sale of art created by local artists. It was sponsored by the Caribbean International Bank of Canada (CIBC), and arranged by the sponsors in collaboration with the team from the art gallery which included Mrs. Kavitha Shenoy, Ms. Mohita Shenoy, Mrs. Hazel-Anne Mahy and Ms. Pamela Austin.
The entries this year totaled an incredible 101 pieces from 53 artists who ranged in age and experience; who painted under 3 main subthemes: ‘Keeping Our Ocean’s Clean’, ‘Ocean Love/Love of the Sea’, and ‘Barbados Waters: Source of Life’. The categories to accommodate for these variables among the entrants included: ‘established artists’, ‘amateur artists’, and a children’s category further subdivided into ‘7 to 9’, ‘10 to 12’ and ‘13 and over’ age groups. Twenty-four established artists submitted 40 entries, 13 amateur artists - 41 pieces, and 16 child entrants submitted a collective 20 pieces.
There were various interpretations and depictions of sea life among the many entries which ranged from several mixed media likenesses of coral reefs; deep sea divers and transatlantic slave portraits painted on wood; acrylic and oil paintings of turtles, deep sea life, children frolicking in the shallows, fishermen gathering their nets, surfers and famous local fish: ‘Mahi Mahi’ and ‘Flying Fish’ skimming over the waters. There were also entries accompanied by poetry, and advocacy for the preservation of coral reefs and marine life.
Featured work included entries from well-known painters on the Barbadian art scene, including Jeena Chatrani with her entry, ‘Wings Over Water’, which featured her signature, ethereal flying fish; Maria Stanford, who painted a bird’s or dare I say a drone’s eye view of leisure on the shore in, ‘Accra Beach’. Cathy Alkins entered, ‘Lion of the Sea’ which depicted a brave, young surfer commanding a giant, sunlit wave, and Alisha Smith, a recently emerged, young, talent submitted a piece highlighting coral reefs entitled, ‘Under the Sea’.
Each category held a proud winner with a bright, red bow posted on the label next to their painting. Among the winners were three promising child artists: Ruby Olopade’s acrylic on canvas ‘Moonlight’, won the prize for the 7 to 9 age category; Josiah Edwards’ coloured pencil on paper, ‘ Within My Bajan Waters’, won in the 10 to 12 age category, and Victoria Haniff’s, ‘Love of the Sea’, won in the 13 and over category.
In the adult categories, an acrylic on canvas representation of life on a vibrant coral reef, ‘ Coral Haven’, work of Rachel Flockhart, was awarded Critics Prize for best painting by an amateur artist. Yazmin Vizcarrondo’s impressionistic portrayal of boys enjoying a sea bath, ‘Change in Tide’, was the runner up for the Critics Prize for best painting by an establish artist. The winner of this category was, Irene Banfield, with an enchanting, mixed media portrayal of a coral reef at the depths of the sea. Her work, which she called, ‘ Wonderous Depths’, had the unique perspective of guiding the viewer’s eye from the bustling underwater life in the reef at the base of the sea to the peaceful light on the calm ocean surface, and evoke a sense of peace, it did.
To close out the show, artist, Sheri Ann Marie Nicholls, was crowned with the People’s Choice award for her dynamic, realistic painting of a somewhat biblical and awe inspiring depiction of a stormy sea graced by light from the heavens entitled, ‘Fantasy’.
The exhibit’s food art, if you will, is worthy of its own paragraph. It paired fabulously with the event and was prepared by ‘Out The Box’ caterers who amazed guests with local culinary favourites crafted into elegant h’ordeuvres. Trays of breaded yam fritters served with savory oxtail stew; plantain molded into the shape of small bowls filled with salt-fish ‘Buljol’, topped with microgreens, made rounds in the room; filling the air with their mouthwatering aroma. They were a hit and thankfully plentiful enough to satisfy the unanimous craving for seconds and thirds. Desserts of miniature Bajan great cakes topped with a layer of whipped sugar icing and pieces of fresh strawberry, as well as the cupped cheesecake option with fruit toppings, made great finishing treats.
In conclusion, the artist hopefuls, supporters and sponsors were all rewarded with a well-organized night of beautiful interpretations of various aspects of the ocean and sea life; delicious wine and cuisine, and the opportunity to mingle and network at what was altogether an amazing show of local artistic talent, in honour and love of our beautiful island sea.

Transatlantique 1: A Cultural Reconnection at Dak'Art Biennale 2024
“The participation of Barbados in the 15th Biennale of Dak'Art Contemporary African Arts marks a significant cultural milestone, as it is the country's first involvement in this prestigious African art event. This aligns with the Barbados Government's initiative to strengthen ties with Francophone Africa beyond the usual Anglophone countries in Africa.
The focus on building these cultural relationships aims to foster broader diplomatic and economic connections between the Caribbean and Africa. These ties are expected to enhance cultural exchange, promote trade, and open doors for development, leading to mutual growth for both regions. Through the arts, Barbados can highlight its creative talent and pave the way for deeper economic collaboration, which could be vital for future trade agreements, tourism, and other industries across the Caribbean and African countries. This is a remarkable moment for cultural diplomacy, using the art platform to bridge communities, expand international networks and increase economic viability.
In Transatlantique 1, art becomes a medium for reconnecting, communing, healing, transformation and development. By coming together in this space, Barbadian and African artists will initiate a dialogue that transcends geographical divides and reclaims cultural identity.
The exhibition offers a platform where historical wounds are revealed and acknowledged, and ancestral voices silenced by centuries of oppression are given new life. It is an act of re-membering —piecing together fragmented histories, reshaping our collective identity and improving economic ties. The meeting of Caribbean and African artists in a space like the Dak’art Biennale is, therefore, a potent and meaningful act of cultural diplomacy. It will not only forge new artistic collaborations and nurture creative innovation but also, most importantly, reclaim the dignity and humanity that colonialism sought to strip away. By engaging in this shared journey, we confront the historical trauma that binds us and finds strength in our collective artistry. It also hopes to increase the economic ties and opportunities between the two regions. We rise as cultural torchbearers, illuminating the path toward a future where our stories, voices, and visions are centered.
This exhibition reminds us that art is not just a reflection of society but a powerful tool to reshape it. This collaboration marks the beginning of new narratives in which Barbados, the Caribbean, and Africa are no longer distant relatives but reunited kin, rediscovering the richness of their shared heritage, contributing to the healing of the wounds of history, and forging a future grounded in cultural and creative solidarity.
May we honour the ancestors who made this journey possible and continue to shape a world where Africa and the Caribbean diaspora walk hand in hand, side by side, bound by history, uplifted by art, and propelled into a collective awareness of new triumphs.”
- Nyzinga Onifa
A reception was held at Queen’s Park Gallery with the artists and curators of the exhibition which is going to exhibit at the Biennale in Dakar, Senegal on Saturday September 28th.
Nyzinga Onifa who initiated this important event of our master artists travelling and exhibiting in Senegal sent further information.
“The Dak’art Contemporary African Arts Biennale, organized by the government of Senegal, will be held from November 07 to Dec 07, 2024. It is a major contemporary art exhibition held in Senegal once every two years. The artistic selection illustrates extraordinary African creativity with diverse mediums, techniques, and artist universes, including illustrations, virtual reality, sound arts, sculpture, and photography. This is the 15th edition of the Biennale, and fifty-eight artists within the Diaspora were selected to participate. The biennale brings together around 250,000 visitors, more than 50,000 from abroad, about 11,000 professionals, and more than 3,000 creators, artists, manufacturers, galleries, collectors, foundations, and institutions. There is a representation of nearly 85 countries, a rich program with nearly 4000 listeners (conferences, film screenings, debates etc). The exhibition host country this year is the USA.
The Official Fringe Festival (OFF) is a private initiative that antennas the biennale. In addition to the official exhibition, which includes selected artists, OFF allows all participants in the arts and culture to present their work without limit, nationality, or gender criteria. OFF will take place May 19 - June 16. It usually starts about three days after the official opening of the Biennale, with more than 450 exhibitions and cultural events. A remarkable media presence, journalists and new media attendants around 1200, media and non-media partners, 200 advertising panels in Dakar including billboards, digital screens, banners, web banners, advertising spots, etc
This year, Barbados will participate in OFF through the NCF and be represented by eleven artists. The NCF will facilitate the project, and the work of Barbadian artists will be displayed in conversation with work from Senegalese artists at the Village Des Arts. The exhibition space at the Village Des Arts was donated to Barbados through Zulu Mbaye, a master artist and the president of the Village Des Arts. Zulu Mbaye will organize discussions, lectures, workshops, and tours for the Barbadian artists to participate in.
The Theme of the Dak’art Biennale is “The Wake,” an Awakening inspired by “In the Wake On Blackness” and written by Christina Sharpe. The working title of the Barbados exhibition is Transatlantique 1: “Return: communing with our Transatlantic Family.”
The participation of Barbadian artists in the Dak'Art Biennale aims to bridge the arts and cultural gap between Barbados and Africa, fostering stronger social and economic ties between the two regions. This initiative will provide an invaluable platform for Barbadian artists to connect with diverse international figures, including African and global artists, writers, art critics, gallerists, collectors, students, scouts, enthusiasts, and art managers. By engaging in these connections, Barbadian artists will have the opportunity to form meaningful partnerships that promote cultural exchange and elevate the island's influence in the global arts community. This interaction will create space for Barbadian art to be exhibited and sold and enrich the broader cultural dialogue between regions and continents.

How It Happened
I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can. This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.
Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.
Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.
Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.
Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.
Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.
Thank you Corrie

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY
Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The Role of the NCF
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
