Thank you, Corrie, for 10 Years of Barbados Visual Arts Magazine Artists Alliance Barbados extends a heartfelt congratulations to Corrie Scott on the 10-year anniversary of Barbados Visual Arts magazine. They are so many questions one can ask about what it takes to publish a visual arts magazine for 120 consecutive months in Barbados. The common answer to all questions would be: “It is just a phenomenal feat by ‘too much’ woman.” 10 years shows massive commitment to publish in a society where the visual arts are undervalued. Corrie works not in the realm of the popular but every month, every magazine calls attention to the sector. She is a champion. 10 years demonstrates extreme resilience for being an advocate the visual arts is as perilous as being a foot solider in a never-ending battle. Corrie is the most knowledgeable about happenings in the visual arts and continues to battle for justice, right and the true upliftment of the sector. She is a warrior. 10 years shows Corrie is genuine and works form a position of love. A deep love for the arts and artists and she supports us all. She shows us a true example of what happens when one uplifts others in love. She is a lover. 10 years shows absolute selflessness. As artists and curators, we rely on Barbados Visual Arts magazine as a reference of our exhibition history, inform us what others are doing and inspire us to continue making art. We cannot visit each show every month, but Corrie somehow does, while still creating her own work and juggling life’s commitments. We have seen her come to photograph a show putting her best persona on a tired body. We are indebted.
10 years means a vast repository of images and documented history which national institutions only think about. Future generations will rely on these repositories. Corrie is one of our greatest wealths in the visual arts. You are a heroine in our eyes. 10 years online takes the visual arts and artists of Barbados to the world. She has created opportunities for many of us beyond the shores of Barbados. She is an exporter. 10 years of editing and publishing Barbados Visual Arts magazine single-handedly means at least 10 years of supporting artists. Corrie produces and publishes from own resources yet continues to support many of us financially with purchases of works. It touches our hearts to see our work displayed in her home. She is a collector and a patron. Thank you so much Corrie for all you do. What you do makes all of us better. We truly appreciate you Artists Alliance Barbados February 2020

DID YOU KNOW, THE EXPLOSION OF ART IN BARBADOS, NO. 11 Did you know there’s been a veritable explosion of art in Barbados since Independence? Did you know there are more than 300 practising artists in Barbados and increasing numbers of sculptors and potters? And did you know that one of our artists, Akyem Ramsey, has won several international awards for his amazing paintings? Barbados had just a few artists in the early days. Haynes King became popular in Britain a hundred and fifty years ago, specialising in romantic and sentimental domestic scenes, and not a few beautiful women! But it wasn’t until the 1930s to 60s that we had a number of local Bajan artists – all pioneers - three ladies - Golde White, Aileen Hamilton and Kathleen Hawkins, and three men – Briggs Clarke, Ivan Payne and Karl Broodhagen. We also had three outstanding Bajans by love and adoption – The Austrian Fela de Kuh, who fled the Nazis, the Canadian Robert MaCleod, famous for his fabulous seascapes, and the high -flying English artist Hector Whistler who influenced younger Bajan artists such as Clifford Hobbs, Roger Moore and Fielding Babb. Spanning Independence were artists such as Gordon Parkinson, Norma Talma and Fielding Babb, but since Independence we’ve had this explosion of visual art of every kind, in every medium – some of my favourites and most popular are Arthur Atkinson, Fielding Babb, Wayne Branch, Virgil Broodhagen, Heidi Berger, Ras Ishi Butcher, Alison Chapman-Andrews, Vanita Commissiong, Patrick Foster, Neville Legall, Clairmont Mapp, Heather Dawn Scott, Corrie Scott, Lilian StenNicholson, Ras Akyem Ramsay – winner of so many international awards, Oneka Small, Omowale Stewart, sculptors like Ras Ilix Heartman, ceramicists Dennis and Maggie Bell and the late Bill Grace, and hundreds of others of distinction.
The catalysts have been the Barbados Arts Council and the Fine Arts Department of the Barbados Community College. Two powerful on-line productions are The Arts Directory Barbados https://issuu.com/corriescott/docs/art_directory_barbados_dec_2011 which features over 250 artists, and Corrie Scott’s monthly Visual Arts Barbados free online magazine https://issuu.com/corriescott . This is a fabulous update on new work and new shows at the galleries – Queen’s Park, the Gallery of Caribbean Art, Champers and Oneka Small’s splendid pop-up shows through Artists Alliance Barbados! And a brilliant new idea is the Artists Studio Tours, featuring the studios of some 30 artists, on March 14 and 15. Just google Artists Studio Tours Barbados. Plans are more than fifty years old for a National Art Gallery, to display our splendid National Collection, now mostly in poor storage. Block A at the Garrison has been designated for a National Gallery since 2007, and there are growing calls for urgent action. Sir Henry Fraser On his new radio talk show on Capital Radio (99,3)

The Barbados Photographic Society has notably been at the forefront of the development of the art and craft of photography in Barbados for a considerable period of time. It offers a wide range of education programmes and provides outreach to schools and educational facilities. The Society caters to photographers of varying skill and age, encouraging members to grow through practice, training and experimentation. In the past, the Society has partnered with the National Cultural Foundation as well as the Barbados Arts Council in its efforts to broaden the reach of photography to everyday viewers, as well as to those with the passion to seek to develop their craft. The Society is humbled to have partnered with His Excellency Gustavo Martinez Pandiani, Ambassador of the Embassy of Argentina in Barbados and the Artists Alliance Barbados team to deliver the exhibition: ‘Joining the Gathering’. ‘Joining The Gathering’ solely features the members of the Barbados Photographic Society. Many of these members are at different stages of their photographic journey. Some are enthusiastic newcomers taking part in their first physical art exhibition, while others are seasoned veterans who have large portfolios of artwork at their fingertips. ‘Joining the Gathering’ is the Society’s effort to embrace the year-long theme of community, fun and commitment. The exhibition is divided into three themed rooms: ● A ‘Small-format Room’, where each photograph is an overall size of 10” X 10” ● A ‘Colour’ Room, comprised of colour photographs of various sizes, media and subjects ● A ‘Black and White’ Room, comprised of grayscale images of varying design In hosting this exhibition the Barbados Photographic Society seeks to create a vibrant, varied and impactful exhibition that showcases a sample of the impressive body of work produced by its members. Let us gather together in celebration of all that we as a Society and others have achieved over the last few years, joining together as we take the first steps into bigger and brighter tomorrows. We thank you all for taking those steps with us.

Barbados National Art Gallery Featured Artist Every other week, we highlight artwork from the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, alphabetically by artist’s surname. Mary Armstrong (b.1925) "Boss Crab" (date) Mixed Media Barbados National Art Gallery Collection "Boss Crab" is a mixed media piece, featuring five speckled blue & red crabs against a deep brown background. Armstrong's attention to detailed patterns and textures, to illuminate the shells of the crabs and their environment with crab holes, as well as the use of vernacular in the title "boss crab", reflects her visual inquiries into folk arts. About the Artist Mary Armstrong was born in Barbados in 1925. She was mostly self-taught and specialized in painting, graphics and etchings with her style having been described as ‘naive’ form of painting. In a 1979 interview, Armstrong said of her work "I am not a realist or a surrealist...my work is closer to the abstract painters". In Barbados, she exhibited at Queen’s Park Gallery, Talma Mill, Fine Art Framing & Hilton Gallery. Her work featured in the Barbados Museum's Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art from 1964 through to the 1970s. Two of her paintings were selected for the Barbados Pavilion in Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada, and in 1967 & 1971 she exhibited at the Sao Paolo Biennial Exhibition. Her work was also exhibited as part of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. In 1974, Armstrong migrated to New Zealand and spent the rest of her adult life there and later Australia, where she has exhibited at Moller’s Gallery, Hamilton & Auckland Society of Arts. In her career, she had won the A.S.A Award in Auckland, 1st prize at the Banks Brewery Barbados showcase, 2nd Prize at the Barbados I.L.O 50th Anniversary, and Silver award for the Annual Agricultural Show, Barbados.
Barbados National Art Gallery Featured Artist Every other week, we highlight artwork from the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, alphabetically by the artist’s surname. Arthur Atkinson (b. 1945) "B. Jones" 1999 Acrylic on Canvas 77.5 x 62.5cm (Framed)
A realism styled, head and shoulders portrait of Barbadian artist Basil Jones. Jones is wearing a baseball cap, glasses and a blue t-shirt, with a camera strap hanging around his neck. The reference to the camera is significant, as Basil Jones was a dedicated supporter of all art events, often documenting them through photography. In his career, Atkinson has created various portraits of artistic friends and peers, often intersecting the realist and abstract styles he employs in his work. Gifted to the National Art Gallery Collection by the artist in 2008. About the Artist Arthur Atkinson (b. 1945) has lived and worked the majority of his life in Barbados except for five years in Grenada. Primarily working with paint on canvas, Atkinson has also created mix-media abstract works, as well as installation works, and has worked in graphic design and set design, including designing the first four issues of the Caribbean art publication Representing Artists (RA) in 1993-94. Although not undergoing formal tertiary level training, due to a lack of programmes in Barbados at the time, Atkinson did study with some of the island’s established artists, including Goldie Spieler in the 1970s. He has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally, his first exhibition being in 1969 at the Hilton-Banks Gallery, and he has produced over 12 solo exhibitions, including at Zemicon Gallery, Queens Park gallery (2005) and Bridgetown Gallery (2010, 2012), and over five joint exhibitions, including the recent Punch Creative Arena exhibition with Ewan Atkinson, Æ : Arthur and Ewan Atkinson, in 2017. He has also showcased in over 25 group exhibitions, including notably, at the Grenada Expo ’69 (1969), XI Biennal de Sao Paolo, Brazil (1971), the first-ever CARIFESTA in Guyana (1972), three Organization of American States (OAS) exhibitions in Washington, D.C (1972, 1980, 1990), the 1986 London Exhibition “Barbadian Art, Caribbean Focus”, the “Contemporary Painting of Latin America and the Caribbean” exhibition in Nagoya, Japan (1991) and the 1st Caribbean and Central American Biennial in Santo Domingo (1992). In 1997, his work was part of the Barbados Submission that won a country gold medal at the 3rd Biennial of Painting from the Caribbean & Central America in the Dominican Republic. In 2008, Atkinson was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts and retrospective exhibition in the Barbados Central Bank Grand Salle. In an artist statement released for the exhibition Æ : Arthur and Ewan Atkinson, Atkinson stated: “I started exhibiting in 1968 and my subject matter has always been inspired by Barbados and things Bajan. The familiar. My experience. Though my paintings have been representational, they have not always been realistically depicted.”
The Barbados Museum & Historical Society (BMHS) in partnership with Father Charles CardReynolds is pleased to announce the launch of The Black Presence: Activism and Agency in a Different Age, an exhibition of paintings, prints and engravings from the collections of the BMHS and Father Charles Card-Reynolds examining historical representations of Black Portraiture in the 18th – 20th C as empowerment. The Black Presence: Activism and Agency in a Different Age launches on February 5th, 2020 at the BMHS Cunard Gallery, with an evening reception and lecture by Father Charles CardReynolds in the Walled Garden Theatre from 6pm. The exhibition runs until June 28th, 2020. For more information, please contact the BMHS at 538 0201. This exhibition, launching in African Awareness Month, aims to further facilitate conversations regarding Black Portraiture for shared heritages of African, Caribbean and European regions. Barbados, in particular, has been at the center of debates regarding colonial representations, retentions, and revisions, cultures that have been submerged, and those that have been perpetually hypervisual. By incorporating engravings and prints from a private British collection, with prints and paintings from the BMHS Fine Art collection, The Black Presence invites local engagement and consideration of multiple narratives within art historical Black Portraiture.

Artists Stamp Their Names On History’s Page BY BGIS | FEB 14, 2020 | MINISTRY NEWS, VISION 2020: WE GATHERIN Alanis Forde, Anna Gibson and Akilah Watts emerged as the winners in the FutureSPACES competition. The three will be painting a mural on the General Post Office in Bridgetown which has been sponsored by James Edghill and Berger Paints. “Three Barbadian women have emerged as the winners in the FutureSPACES competition which posted a $30,000 prize purse and attracted dozens of entries. Using the moniker ‘A3’, the winning group is composed of Alanis Forde, Akilah Watts, and Anna Gibson
The FutureSPACES competition attracted entries from a bevy of skilled artists who pitched progressively creative ideas to execute the concept of ‘What Barbados would look like in the future’. In addition to the monetary prize, the distinct opportunity is provided to paint the largest mural in the Eastern Caribbean. While Ms. Watts, Ms. Forde and Ms. Gibson won as a team entry, they are individually accomplished artists with unique styles. The young women often work as a group and have completed murals at the Grantley Adams International Airport, the Barbados Community College, St Giles Primary, and for antibullying campaigns at several secondary schools. James Edghill, the local developer who sponsored the prize and believes that Corporate Barbados needs to be more supportive of the creative economy, said it was an easy decision to come on board with the FutureSPACES initiative. He stated: “Creative industries need non-traditional forms of financing and support. More companies and individuals can be involved in a philanthropic way, to help support the creative industries to make something good. Smaller donations from companies or individuals can have a large impact on a neighbourhood, on a community, on a city.” Mr. Edghill added that investment in the creative capital of the country’s artists can have long-term social benefits and economic impact. When complete, the FutureSPACES mural, measuring 60 feet by 30 feet, will adorn the exterior of the General Post Office. At this size, it will surpass any other art installation produced in the Eastern Caribbean. In addition to Mr. Edghill’s contribution, Berger Paints has sponsored the paints for the large space to allow for a vibrant and long-lasting work of art. To complete the mural, the A3 team will be working in tandem sunrise to sunset for a number of weeks, beginning tomorrow, Friday, February 14. The winning image is designed and will be imprinted to reflect the ethos of the General Post Office for decades to come. It combines a variety of artistic styles as well as symbols of past and future of Barbados. The group stated that they decided to use layers to examine the past and the present in order to build on the image that they thought the future would be.
The significance of being selected as the team to create such an important public display is a point which is not lost on the artists. Ms. Forde believes that although persons are not always exposed to public art, the best way to reach them is through visual media. “They will have an emotional connection to the imagery because it’s from where they are from. Everybody in this island has had some sort of cultural contact with an element of this piece and the imagery we use is important,” she explained. Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John King, was pleased to see the many ways in which the FutureSPACES concept was interpreted and expressed satisfaction that the winning entry came from a team. “I know we have amazing creative talent in the visual arts. It’s good to see artists coming together and working within collectives,” he stated. Of the winning artwork that will be produced in the coming months, Mr. King added: “It is very fitting given the location of the artwork. The GPO stands as an example of modern architecture in its time, housing a service that has been important for centuries. Having this work of art added to the space in 2020 speaks to our past and heritage as well as our future.” Ms. Watts agreed, stating: “It’s also about what we want our outcome for the future to be. We want to be financially stable, to be able to rely on our own people for the resources that we need.” The group is also looking for volunteers to assist with various aspects of the mural.”

Jo Anne started doing ceramics as a hobby in 1982 and has operated a ceramics studio since 1987, providing services and supplies to people who wished to do slip casted ceramics as a hobby. She has taught many different finishing techniques to her students and learnt many more through experimenting, and trial and error. Juliana has been working with pottery and ceramics since 1992. She began by hand-painting local pottery with bold and colourful designs. After graduating University she made the decision to pursue her passion for art through the medium of ceramics. Juliana has worked with a number of techniques such as casted ceramics, handbuilding, surface decoration and raku firing. Juliana was first introduced to Raku in 2006 during a two week residency in St. Thomas USVI, with this exposure Juliana began mixing her own glazes, constructed her own kiln and has been Raku firing since then. https://www.facebook.com/thebarnartcentre /
