The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

ROSEMARY PILGRIM
Women have always been artists.
Prehistoric cave paintings were, until recently, thought to be ritualistic works by male hunters. But cave paintings, anywhere in the world, are accompanied by a multitude of handprints and when someone had the bright idea to measure those handprints, it was found, that the majority had been made by women. So, it is now believed that women, rather than hunting men, created those wonderful, lifelike records of prehistoric animals. Perhaps female hunters? Why not?
The ‘Bayeux Tapestries, which chronicle the Norman conquest of Britain were created by women. They are not woven tapestries , but intricate embroideries of traditional Nordic origin.
From pre-historic to classical times, through the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the Industrial age, women have continued to work as professional artists. They were often, but not always, banned from art academies and schools because of their gender. Many of the successful ones were daughters of renowned male artists, who taught them the crafts and the tricks of their trade, while gradually introducing them to their own clienteles and the wider art scene. But after that introduction, only hard work and talent counted, and many competed successfully with their male counterparts.
Katerina de Vigri was a nun who became famous for her Illuminated Manuscripts. As St Catherine of Bologna she became the Patron Saint of Artists and her un-embalmed, relatively un-corrupt body has been on show in the chapel of her order for 500 years. (She looks good for her age). So, the Patron Saint of all artists is a woman. Then there was Lavinia Fontana, an Italian Renaissance painter (1552-1614) with a brilliant and profitable career. As a leading member of several academies and a papal appointee (painter to the Vatican), she was much in demand and lavishly paid for her work. She married well, and her wealthy husband was totally supportive. He even assisted in her studio, mixing paints and doing some of the less technical work on her paintings. Lavinia gave birth to 11 children and lived to the ripe old age of 62 at a time when women often died birthing and ‘one score and ten’ was regarded as ‘old’. After her death many of her works were accredited to male painters, that’s why she was famous in her own time, but hardly known in ours. But, she is just one of many and thanks to the internet we can now learn about her and other women artists, past and present.
Women Artists, Rosemary Pilgrim-Richards and the Cultural Fabric of the Caribbean.
Millenia have passed, technology has advanced and societies have changed. Yet, as women artists, we are still faced with this dilemma: how do we juggle our different roles as professionals, wives , mothers and caregivers?
It is a balancing act which requires the steely nerves of tight-rope walkers combined with the stamina of long-distance runners and so we develop coping strategies, which vary with time, place and personality.
Rosemary Pilgrim-Richards has had to balance her duties as a mother, grandmother and art teacher with her responsibility to her goddess-given talent.
In practical terms this means finding time and space to work, and defending those against all onslaughts, whether these come in the form of urgent demands or meek supplications. The ‘Trojan Horse’ of a loving family can be a menace to creative discipline.
The “Coffee and Birdsong“ series was born out of this necessity.
In order to have time to work Rosemary habitually gets up at 4 a.m., makes her coffee and settles down to paint. There is a special magic about this time in the morning, the darkest time before the break of dawn. It is known as the ‘Witching Hour’ or the ‘Hour of the Wolf”, among restless souls with insomnia. For others it is a time of meditation and prayer, or the time to get up and cook the day’s meals, tend to livestock, till the soil or prepare for market. It is a universal time of transition: not-still-night-not-yet-day, and it is quiet. Until the birds wake.
Rosemary’s paintings capture both the peace and the transcendental energy of that time. You can follow her journey from the portrayal of physical reality to spiritual truth through the progression of works and in each individual piece. She is a Caribbean woman of the generation that was born to ‘West Indian’ parents, when the movement of people, through voluntary and forced migrations, created a Caribbean social fabric interwoven over generations, torn asunder by conflict and strife, stitched together by relationships and embroidered, overlayed and accented by historical and political narratives.
The Official Historical Narrative has always been constructed by the rulers. It consists of grids and straight lines, a pretence of orderly progression and it ignores, or misrepresents, the organic reality lived by all. And this organic reality, this ‘livity’, holds an infinite number of events and possibilities, a surging primeval soup of random occurrences with open-ended outcomes. Which means, that although it is important to know history, we must never allow its official narratives to define us.
In her paintings and prints Rosemary Pilgrim presents a very personal view of the Caribbean and its social fabric. She pays tribute to the strength, resilience and loving support, which spans generations and territories. She does so, not only with her choice of topics, but with her very methods and use of media.
‘Grannie Lyn’ was, among other things, a Milliner, so Rosemary paints her in the midst of her girl-children (her own and others that she had ‘raised up’), and as an added tribute she embroiders the canvas. In other works, she paints over tea-bags, dyed-in-the-cup during gatherings of friends and family. Opened, dried and stitched together they create wonderful, glowing earthy backgrounds, steeped in good memories and positive vibes. Many pieces include letters, documents and random notes, clearly visible or over-painted and half-erased, just hinting at thoughts and emotions, people and events.
What was interwoven over generations, then torn asunder by conflict and strife, Rosemary stiches together. She recreates her family narrative through painting, embroidery, overlays and accents. The result is this collection of works, “Home and Heart”, which she shares with us from the depth of her generous soul.
When you make your way around a gallery, I want you to remember this:
A work of art has four stages of life. The first is the ‘Concept’, the second is the ’Execution’ the third is the ‘Completion’. All of these belong to the artist and there is a time limit to each step. Sometimes a work takes minutes, sometimes years, but there is always a definite cut-off time. The fourth is when the work meets the viewer, when each one of us bring our own life experiences, emotions and preferences to the interpretation of the works of art. We may all have different opinions about the meaning of a work- and they are all correct. Your interpretation may differ from what the artist intended, but it is yours, and it is still correct, because the interaction between viewer and image is both a contemplative and a creative activity, one which has no time limit.

Capital Media HD 99.3 recorded Artist Heather-Dawn Scott who is protesting for a National Art Gallery in Barbados. She insists that the country needs a home for all forms of art to foster the island’s creativity and creative thinking. WE NEED A NATIONAL ART GALLERY NOW
“More immediate problems clamber for our attention and it may seem that a National Art Gallery should be low on the nation's list of priorities. There may never be a right time to implement vital changes but 65 years has been an extraordinarily long time waiting with donors and too many of our most gifted artists making personal contributions in vain, our vibrant National Art Collection locked away and inaccessible. What purpose would a national art gallery serve? Those millions of dollars could be put to better use you might believe. What use is creativity? What's the purpose of art? ... thinking outside the box? Thought and emotion drive us all - and the arts in every manifestation, theatre, film, music, conceptual art, literature, sculpture, textile, photography architecture, food, spoken word, protest, performance, dance... on and on... are where we explore who and what we are.
Clearly a well structured Barbados National Art Gallery is fundamental to our future. This complacency, this lag, this opacity has been a destructive lead weight for much to long.”

A

“Heather-Dawn Scott’s temporary protest piece on Jemmots Lane uses the railings as prison bars with the hands of budding talent and seasoned artists and visiting public gripping tightly, waiting but securely locked out!”
“Art is not easy, both it's conception and it's realisation take a number of skills and disciplines. There are a multiplicity of forms for communicating and sharing our ideas and emotions. Increasingly enticing new tools and technologies beckon us. The results can be wondrous, thought provoking and humorous too. So we gather up our equipment make mock ups, go for trial runs, measure up then go for it. The government, the BNAG buy a piece; the artist feels humbled but validated and encouraged....only to find that the treasured piece of work is locked up, locked away in the dark and the public is locked out and the artist is locked off. Some of our students at BCC have never been to a National Art Gallery , some never even been to a gallery at all.
This is a destructive course, particularly on a small island. The work suffers. “

The Brighton Storeroom is delighted to announce that The National Cultural Foundation of Barbados has purchased “Warri” and “Making of The Drum” from Juliana Inniss' ‘Unearthing Identity’ exhibition for their permanent collection. Congratulations to both Juliana and the NCF!
“Unearthing Identity is Inniss’ second solo show, and features a unique body of hand coiled work - made with a variety of clays – created in her Christ Church studio in Barbados. This collection of work focuses on the physical form of a vessel and reimagines it as a container for both the tangible and the intangible: a home for shared heritage, stories and spirits.”

‘Thalassic’ an exhibition by Sadé Payne at Drift Ocean Terrace Lounge, Holetown. Opening September 27th Opening hours Tues-Sat from 5pm onwards.
“Sadé Payne is a young Barbadian artist whose work is largely inspired by the turbulence of the sea. The 25 year old impressionist whose primary medium is acrylics on canvas uses a combination of gestural brushstrokes and bold textural palette knife marks to depict breathtaking seascapes sceneries, fusing worlds of fantasy with elements of reality.
The artist although having an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from the Barbados Community College describes her artistic style as largely self-taught. Her most recent work not only dares to capture the motion of the sea but also explores the refraction of light above and below the ocean surface and its influence on colors.” Drift is open from 5 pm until late For more info Drift Barbados is on Facebook Tel: 4322808. www.driftbarbados.com

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society was thrilled to be contacted by the family of Aileen Hamilton, who expressed a desire to see her collection on their visit to the island. The Aileen Hamilton collection is the largest single collection cared for by the Museum with well over 2400 pieces of artwork, as well as notebooks, sketch pads and other miscellaneous articles (including some documentation of her husband Dr Bruce Hamilton).
From a very young age, she was a prolific and incredibly talented artist, never without paper and a pen/pencil. She is best known for her portraiture, but she was equally adept at landscapes, still life, lino prints, sketches and ceramics - anything that caught her eye.
Though her body of work and involvement in the development of the local and regional art was substantial, her legacy has greatly influenced art as we see it in Barbados today. For 40 years, every Saturday, she instructed art teachers at the Erdiston Teachers' Training College in technical aspects of art and also showed them how to encourage their students' abilities and foster self-expression. Mrs Hamilton's artwork was amongst those selected for the decolonisation of State House to herald Barbados' change to Republican status. The BMHS was given the honour of selecting works by both past and contemporary native artists to replace those symbols of the monarchy at what was previously known as Government House. The President of Barbados now greets dignitaries from all over the world and performs official ceremonies surrounded by a wide variety of local works of art.
The Director of the BMHS Alissandra Cummins has long been an avid researcher of Aileen Hamilton's work and was present to meet the niece of Mrs Hamilton, her husband and daughter at the Museum's off-site storage facility. The family was taken on a tour of the collection, viewed a selection of the works and was presented with a copy of "Art in Barbados - What Kind of Mirror Image" authored by Ms. Cummins in collaboration with Allison Thompson and Nick Whittle.

“As humans we live in our bodies. They chronicle our experiences through the passage of time. Lines, wrinkles, scars, moles, scratches. All changes are recorder on our divine vessel. Each distinct culture affords us culture specific experiences. These manifest not only in looks but in demeanour. What is that thing which makes a Bajan easily identifiable to another Bajan without one or the other even opening their mouths?
We are calling for work which explores how we wear our identity and what are the trademark values that make us Bajan.
Character has no age limit, so although we would wish to focus on our elders works in the show can be representations of all stages of life.”

Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving. Please don’t add their names here. Private message me. Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.
Books kindly donated to go to a young aspiring artist in need. Thank you Heidi Berger Art.
Helping the young talent where we can. This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.

“
Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The Role of the NCF
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
