THE IMPACT The passion behind raising awareness for the current state of Veterans was founded on the belief that “Homeless” and “Veteran” are two words that should NEVER go together. However, the more the cameras rolled, the more our crew realized that homelessness is a mere symptom of what it means to be a Veteran. With recent cuts in military funding and a series of counselors rushing Veterans through therapy like an assembly line it has become clear that our U.S. Veterans are belittled by the very system that created them. Souldier strives to give the viewer a raw look at what continues to be an issue for hundreds of thousands of men and women every single day. This 60 minute documentary includes interviews with homeless veterans, veterans with PTSD, titled organization leaders and counselors. Veterans share their experiences, their fears and their frustration. It is too easy for Veterans in need to be ignored. Are our pro-

Every ‘on-air’ personality has some kind of dirty little secret that he or she just can’t seem to keep locked in the closet. For this edgy on-air personality, the secret is slowly beginning to unfold as he begins to open up and reveal things to Mainstream that no one knows. You may have heard the sounds of Shan airwaves of 98KUPD, Arizona’s Real Rock station. For the last seven years The Shan Man show has provided a stream of head banging, rocked out music for the Phoenix region, with the 9’oclock hour being dedicated solely for the 9’oclock Four Play. In January of this year Shan Man realized that it was time to make some changes to the content of his show. Once word got out that the Shan Man was making changes, social media blew up, with many of Shan Man listeners speculating that he was leaving 98KUPD. Rumors turned out to be only that. Shan Man had made the decision to retire the 9’oclock four play. He is actually starting two new segments in his show, the 8 o’clock personal IPod to the studio outlet and know the airwaves are blasting one random song after another. Thankfully for the 98 KUPD listeners, Shan Man’s ear for music guarantees a great hour of rock music. The second segment of the show is called 10 o’clock Tool,

where you guessed it, one full hour dedicated to the band Tool. The airplay consists of mainstream Tool songs and some that have never been aired on the radio. Be sure to check out the new Shan Man segments for a real rock experience. Shan Man, the on air personality, is awesome, talented, witty and good at what he does, but the real man Shannon Hernandez is just as kick ass! A self proclaimed “geek” and social media guru, his avid tweeting, face booking and google +activity have earned him a plethora of followers and friends. His passion for social media has been fully extended to helping his sister upgrade her concept and zest for social media for her business in family com. Shannon’s value for family was instilled in him as a child and today that is still modeled by his parents who have been married over forty years. Do not let his long hair and rocker image fool you, Shannon’s mind is very educated and he’s proud to be part of the ASU Alumni, graduating with his undergrad degree in 2000. He also completed graduate school with a Masters degree in Education. It was with his Masters degree that he worked as a High School English and Rhetoric teacher and also attained full time employment with radio until eventually he made radio his permanent home.

You can hear Shan Man’s enthusiasm for life every time he talks. During our time together, he spoke of the many celebrity interviews that he has been fortunate enough to conduct as an on air personality. Shan Man said that sitting down to pick the brain of a big time musician was one of the very best perks of the job. The merging of his career choices have given Shan Man the advantage when he is conducting his celebrity interviews, mentioning been asked in previous interviews. Shan Man says, “I want to know the dirty details, ask a rock star what kind You know do they scratch their groin Man mentions that one of his favorite rock star interviews was with Corey Taylor from Slip Knot for the simple fact that he was raw and real. Shannon proceeds to say how he enjoys tapping into the realness of the celebrity. This of course comes as no surprise to Mainstream since we have discovered, while sitting in the studio, that Shan Man is down to earth and real. Be sure to capture him on Big Red radio 98KUPD Monday thru Friday from 7PM to midnight and also follow him on twitter @ShanManOnline or on

Are you really drinking

less calories in a

Skinny drink? By two-time national champion and current state record holding power lifter,

Mathew Lenzi Message Matthew Lenzi for further Q&A on these articles at: facebook.com/matthewthefrenzilenzi

Is it appealing to have an alcoholic drink that is less than 100 calories? Duh! Even so, have you ever really looked into the substitute ingredients you are consuming by having this “skinny” drink? The Skinny Margarita at the Studio Movie Grill uses silver Milagro Tequila, bar syrup (also called simple syrup), lime juice, and agave nectar. These ingredients are cheaper than the premium products they are replacing and they keep the drink under 100 calories. For all you points counters, this sounds appealing to your diet. But what about your body? Is it still appealing if I tell you that the slow processing sugars found in the simple syrup and agave nectar take so long to dissolve into the body that they are stored in the body as fat cells? Fat cells normally grow around the mid to lower back as well as in what’s commonly known as the love handles. The most frequently asked question in the industry for trainers like myself is “How do I get rid of my handles?” I usually advise to begin by not sucking on sugars that store in those areas of the body that you want to lose most. By comparison, a regular Margarita on the rocks 14

averages 300 calories but it has none of the substitutes love handles. While waiting tables recently, I served a woman the “Skinny” version of the Margarita. She ordered it because at 100 calories, it met the “points” requirements of her diet. Should I have stopped her and explained that she will have even larger love handles if she drinks this “Skinny” beverage? I decided

Each of us has to open our eyes to the food and drinks we consume and realize that what we put into our bodies could be harmful. Social pressure makes many of us take Jenny Craig too seriously. The point system is not a bad way to try and live healthier. But, each of us must consider the reality of every item that we eat or drink. When at the bar, it is not possible to count every calorie that is poured into a cocktail. It turns out that the “simple” syrup used in the low calorie version of the drink isn’t so simple after all. In reality, it skimps high quality products but you won’t look any thinner.

“The Female Belief about Weights”

The Female Belief about

WEIGHTS Women seem to still have the same 1950’s attitude when it comes to the weight room, as though they belong in the kitchen using a blender instead of in a gym room holding a dumbbell. Every new female client coming in tells me that she wishes to tone up a certain area of her body; yet when I want her to do 6-8 weeks of strength training in the beginning, she tend to lose interest. I don’t see how they all believe that by doing only the 6-8 weeks, a woman could become Beast-like. If that were the case, why isn’t every young man coming to me for this same 6-8 weeks of strength training to become the next Arnold? I have been training for 21 years and have competed in power lifting contests for 19 years; I know that it takes years of dedication and simple hard work to create the body we all want. As my female friend, Tisa Rodriguez, was quoted as saying, “Most women automatically think that lifting weights will turn them into bodybuilders overnight, but the truth is you have to lift heavier than what your body is used to in order to grow. A lot of women want to tone or trim their bodies. Muscle constantly burns calories. In turn the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. The weights are your friend; strength training is critical, simply no way around it.” Most women expect the treadmill to do everything for them and they spend many hours a week on one and then complain that they don’t feel like they are losing

By two-time national champion and current state record holding power lifter,

Mathew Lenzi Message Matthew Lenzi for further Q&A on these articles at: facebook.com/matthewthefrenzilenzi

the weight fast enough. That’s because they have no muscle to increase metabolism, which in turn increases the number of calories they are burning. With a proper mix of strength training and cardio, women can get the body they wish they had. But, you CAN’T get the body you wish you had without picking up a weight! This must get through your head. The only point I wish to really make clear for women beginning a strength routine: create a chart of measurements of the body. This will show you the progress you are making and prove me right (yes I’m a male - I think I’m always right). The chart is better than just a scale due to the age-old saying that muscle weighs more than fat! If you are looking for a weekly measure to track your progress, the best one would be those inches you are losing off the stomach, arms, thighs, and any other areas of concern. You may not see much of a weight loss while beginning a strengthening routine. But, you will see the inches drop as you develop the body you want to have. The toning every woman is looking for begins after she has something to tone. Only after muscle develops do I then change the workouts and create a higher intensity, faster paced workout that will eliminate the remaining unwanted weight. Ladies, let’s face it. If you want to be in the next Maxim or impress your lover, you must learn to use the weights. Don’t be afraid. What you accomplish today, you can beat tomorrow.

Let’s face it, we all depend way too much on technology. As I’m typing this article I am using my iPhone to do so while simultaneously listening to obscure 80s rock on Spotify, with background for ambiance. The Internet has occupied 75% of Americans’ social lives and has all but taken over all of social activity. Many of you reading this article right now have probably either via the numerous dating sites found on the web or any of the many social networks online. Don’t lie, you know you met that special someone by not alone in that endeavor so you can feel a little less creepy about liking someone’s pics at 3am on a Tuesday. With the high surge of Internet dating, you’re starting to see more guys who you’d stereotypically think could only get the caliber of women you see them by paying for their time. This isn’t a bad thing, it just confuses more people than you’d think. I mean, we were all pretty much conditioned to believing that only tall, dark and handsome guys were going to get the top shelf women and if always left “taking one for the team”, if he was hooking up at all. For the most

part, the Internet and Internet dating those who would be considered geeks and nerds and otherwise, for lack of a good looking women to date, wouldn’t you agree? I mean, you can go to any I’m talking about and like many before you, you just sit and wonder how. Well I have the answer to how and that’s security. A big reason why a lot of guys don’t ask women out is because of their fear of being rejected. For those of us old enough to remember a day when you actually had to go outside and meet people to date, being rejected in your face is a hard pill to swallow for most. If you can’t actually see the person saying “no” to you, it’s a lot easier to take. Also, the Internet is a great ice breaker when it comes to men meeting women. You really don’t have to do much digging because, in most cases, she’s given a pretty good and hopefully accurate description of herself and all men have to do is read and regurgitate then set up a date.

normally see them with is because we, as a society, are over saturated with complete and utter douche bags. It was cool for a weekend and it’s still cool for insecure people and those with orange skin, but a lot of women have either grown out of liking that or they’re tired of buying new sheets because someone’s spray on tan ruined them. Unlike these guys, geeks and nerds have something more to talk about than what kind of hair gel they use. The real reason why you see a lot of nerds and geeks with top shelf women is because while random douchebags and roided out jerks are coloring themselves orange or buying skin tight TapOut shirts, all geeks and nerds are thinking about is hooking up with women. That statement has been true since before it was made famous in the movie Revenge of the Nerds and it’s still true to this day. Don’t believe me? Ask a chick why she’s with the guy she’s with if you think he’s a geek or a nerd and I’ll guarantee one of her top a geek.

Another reason why a lot of guys who’d be considered nerds and geeks are getting more women who you wouldn’t
