SUNRISE A winter sunrise – or a sunrise in general – can evoke many feelings. Our purpose here is to provide a bit of inspiration as we swiftly head into the New Year. A photo like this could either be a sunrise – or it might be a sunset. In this case it is a sunrise. And just like a new day dawning, our mental outlook of how we see this photo can well determine our path throughout 2015. Make it a great day and a great year. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

Long time employee takes over Fisher Decorating Center COSHOCTON – There have been a lot of changes at Fisher Decorating Center over the years. Decorating trends have come and gone, owners have changed, but one aspect of the business has always remained the same – a commitment to quality customer service. Roger Eastman made sure of that when he owned the business and Bill Potter plans to do the same now that he’s in charge of the Main Street business. “You have to pay attention to the customer and really work with them to help them get the best value for their money,” Potter said. “Cheapest isn’t always best. We work hard to get people’s business and even harder to keep it.” He has worked for the business for a total of 27 years and officially took over ownership after Eastman retired on Jan. 2. Eastman got involved in the business in 1973 when his father-in-law Don Lessig was owner and then took it over in 1987. “Main Street and this business have changed a lot, but what helped us was our excellent customer service when it came to working

with people who are decorating their homes,” Eastman said. “Someone’s house is their biggest investment. You have to be able to talk to them and understand how they want to accomplish their project.” Two of the ways they used to do that were through wallpaper and paint options. “The core of the business in the 70s was wallpaper,” Eastman said. “We had over 300 patterns in the store, but wallpaper was only $0.95 a roll. The price has increased a lot and we probably don’t even have 30 patterns in stock right now.” Paint also was a bigger seller in the 80s and into the 90s. “We had a lot more factories in town and they needed industrial paint,” Eastman said. “There got to be no market for that so floor coverings became our biggest seller.” The people, however, were what made the job fun for Eastman. “We have a lot of long time customers and friends,” he said. “People’s kids became our customers and their grandkids starting coming in when they bought their first houses. It was nice to watch families grow up.” Potter also grew up with the business as he started there in high school and came back after college. “I could write a book on what I learned about taking care of customers from Roger and his father-in-law Don,” Potter said. “It’s the little things that keep people happy. If someone is looking for something and we don’t have it, I’ll tell them where I think they might be able to get it, even if it’s a local competitor. If people can’t get something here, I’d rather them still at

The donations will be used by each organization to purchase food and support on-going needs. Peoples Bancorp Foundation contributions focus on charitable giving in four major areas: community investment and economic development, youth and education, human services programs that improve the social needs of low- to moderate-income communities and individuals, and the arts and cultures. OWNERS Jim Eubank and Karen Casey opened Cockadoodledoo, a breakfast only restaurant on Dec. 29, 2014. The restaurant is located at 1330 S. Sixth St. inside of Alpha Bits & Bytes. BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS COSHOCTON – If you are looking for a yummy and cheep breakfast then Cockadoodledoo is the place for you. The breakfast only restaurant was opened Dec. 29, 2014, by Karen Casey and Jim Eubank and is located at 1330 S. Sixth St. inside of Alpha Bits & Bytes. “I always wanted to own my own restaurant, but never really had the means to do it,” Casey said. “We know Adrian Padilla (the owner of Alpha’s) really well and asked him about the idea of doing a breakfast only restaurant here since he doesn’t open until 11 a.m. or noon. He thought it was a fantastic idea so I made a menu and started shopping.” Padilla gave them the okay to use his facility on Dec. 7, 2014 and by Dec. 27, 2014 Casey and Eubank’s were ready for a friends and family event. “We’ve been busier than I thought we would be,” Casey said. “I also wasn’t sure how we’d do our first weekend, but we had several people come in.” Cockadoodledoo is open from 5 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, 2 to 11 a.m. Saturday and 2 to 6 a.m. Sunday. They do dine in and carryout daily and also deliver on Saturday. “Our biggest seller is a traditional breakfast of eggs, meat, hash browns and toast,” Casey said. They also feature breakfast empanadas. “They are like fry pies, but you can pick what you want in them,” Casey said. “I like the bacon, egg and cheese ones.” Another unique item is the breakfast quesadilla. “A lot of restaurants around here have breakfast burritos but I couldn’t find one with a quesadilla,” Casey said. The menu items are all $6 and under and a sample menu can be found on Cockadoodledoo’s Facebook page. “One thing I think I would like to add are some healthier, lower calorie items,” Casey said. For now Casey, who works full time as a nurse, and Eubank’s plan to stick with serving just breakfast and enjoying the opportunity to spend more time together. “I never really got to see him because he worked second shift at Clow,” Casey said. “I always said I wished he’d quit and he finally listen to me and I got to open a restaurant like I always wanted to. My first job out of high school was working at McDonald’s and I always liked the chance working at restaurants gave you to work with people and meet new people.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Marian’s powerful testimony of coming to brokenness and emptiness and her dynamic account of the gentle mercy and forceful grace of Christ who called her into His love, permeates all of her writings and speaking engagements. Whole in Christ and ready to tell any ear that will listen, Marian has a passion for leading others to her Redeemer. She is a dynamic speaker that leaves indelible marks on her audience... painful rib cages from laughter, and mind-searing impressions of being sodead-on to one’s private dilemmas. Marian has the gift of applying sound Biblical truth to the tender wounds of bleeding hearts. The girl can teach. The girl can relate. And the girl can move a wounded heart to change through an introduction to Jesus Christ, the Lord and Lover of her soul. Today Marian is the founder of Redeemed Girl Ministries. She is an active Bible study teacher, conference speaker and published author. She is a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Marian lives in San Antonio with her husband Justin and their two boys, Andrew and Brenden.

JANUARY 18TH, 1965 The Coshocton County Dairy Service Unit had purchased four Milk-O-Meters to use in the dairy testing program of the county. They were used in pipeline milkers to accurately weigh the milk produced by individual cows without interfering with the normal milking procedure. They were also eqiupped with a device whereby a sample of milk from the entire production of a cow during the milking process is obtained in order to run the butterfat test. With the new equipment, the Dairy Service Unit through its dairy supervisor, Howard Lowe, was able to do a more thorough and complete job of assisting dairymen in keeping production records.

The Board had been taking into consideration the possibility of closing the school because of state department standards and local funding. The group suggested the possibility of redistricting and pointed out the advantages of small class sizes and personal instruction with each child. The group also said the students were well-behaved and the school offered many extra-curricular activities. However, the Board responded by saying it wasn’t the quality of education or the people, but state requirements and funding as to why the school might close.

BANKRUPTCY
1985
JANUARY 16TH, 1985 The Coshocton County Genealogical Society had made plans to write an updated history book of the county. Members of the organization said the book would be used as a fundraiser for their organization and they felt it was also needed in the county as the last book published was in 1911. The book was to be published by Taylor Publishing Co. and was expected to take two years to complete. If there was enough public interest in the book, the contract was to be signed in three to four months. The book was to be priced at $48. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

JANUARY 16TH, 1955 Eddie Cupps had been paralyzed from the waist down since Dec. 5, 1941 when he was hurt in a coal mining accident and spent two years and eight months in hospitals. After a few jobs that didn’t work out for him, Eddie and his wife bought 14 acres in Coshocton County and Eddie began to dabble in woodworking. After writing to the governor, Eddie was sent to a woodworking class in Columbus and completed the course in six weeks. He returned home, purchased some lumber, and set up shop. Shortly before Christmas, Eddie’s shop opened to the public. He was an overnight sensation as many people purchased decorations, tables, cabinets, wardrobes, and shelves from Eddie.

HEALTH CHECK Diane Erwin is pictured getting her blood pressure checked at the 2014 Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo. This year’s expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kids America. BEACON FILE PHOTO COSHOCTON – Amy Stockdale, executive director of the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, is super excited for the upcoming third annual Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo. “Last year there was someone there who had their blood pressure checked and it was sky high,” Stockdale said. “We got them to the ER and helped save a life. That’s what we want to do, get people healthier and teach them to be safer.” The third annual Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kids America, 1660 Otsego Ave. The event is co-sponsored by the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, Coshocton County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) and Coshocton County Safety Council. Admission to the expo is free and there will be more than 35 exhibitors, kids’ activities, numerous health screenings, and wellness and safety information. “I think we have as many new vendors as we do returning ones,” Stockdale said. “We also have more safety type people this year and a lot of the vendors will have door prizes.” She also was excited to report that the Walhonding Valley Fire Department will have a booth with fire safety information and bring equipment to look at, MedFlight plans to land at Kids America and Dingo the Deputy Dog from the Sheriff’s Office will again visit the expo. “Last year the kids loved Dingo,” Stockdale said. Fun activities for the kids also are being planned by Miss Jennifer’s Dance Studio, which is located in Kids America, and by the Youth Asset Leadership Team (YALT) from Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices. Another key part of the expo is the flu shots that will be available from Interim Healthcare and the blood tests that Coshocton Hospital and Health Services of Coshocton will be partnering to offer the public. Results will be sent to the patient’s physician. The tests that will offered for a reasonable fee include: CBC (Complete Blood Count); Chem8 (Glucose, BUN, Creatinine, Potassium, Chloride, Carbon Dioxide, and Calcium) test; Lipid Profile test; Thyroid Stimulation Hormone test; and the A1C test. There will also be many other free health screenings offered such as blood pressure screenings and a Dermascan. “This is an event that really highlights services that are available right here in your own community,” Stockdale said. Last year more than 500 people attended the free, family friendly event. “You can stay 30 minutes or you can stay three hours,” Stockdale said. “We had people throughout the whole expo last year and even children were walking around, finding out about services and really participating.” For information about the Health, Safety and Wellness Expo on Saturday, Jan. 17, call the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce at 622-5411. Sycks appointed to statewide committee CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON
COSHOCTON - Christine Sycks, Coshocton County Auditor, was recently appointed to serve on the 2015 Statewide Legislative Committee of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio (CAAO) representing the Northeast District. The CAAO Executive Committee assumes leadership of the agenda for the CAAO at a time of increased activity and visibility. The committee will work closely with the Administration and General Assembly to monitor and suggest legislative proposals which impact local taxpayers and to encourage policies which positively impact county government. The CAAO anticipates much activity during 2015 as the state deals with a new biennial budget and continues examination of government reform measures and major changes in a variety of taxation issues. The CAAO includes all 88 Ohio County Auditors. Entering its 147th year, the CAAO was established to promote and protect the interests of the taxpayers of Ohio and to improve the administration of county government.
COSHOCTON – When Deric Potts’ father developed dementia, he couldn’t find a facility that he was comfortable having him live at, so he decided to open his own. The Juanita Potts Family Home opened in December 2014 at 77 Mission Ridge Road, which is the site of the former Shaw Barton Lodge. “It’s an adult family home concept that is different than anything around here,” Deric said. “It’s popular in other areas of the country, but unheard of here. It gives you the feeling of being in a home and not an institution.” The resort style home can house five
residents and provides them with private bedrooms, half baths and shared bathrooms with showers that are handicap accessible. It also sits on just under two acres and is in a private secluded area off Cambridge Road. Deric plans to hire six or seven employees to assist the residents, who he said will function very much like a family. “We will eat as a family and do activities together internally and externally,” he said. Deric also plans to partner with local schools to have choirs perform at the home and would even like to have the culinary arts students from the Coshocton County Career Center come do some cooking for the residents. “I think it’s important for young and old to work together,” he said. Plans also are in the works for an outdoor kitchen as Deric discovered that dementia
patients especially benefit from sunlight. His main goal, however, is to help people who maybe shouldn’t be still living at home, but aren’t ready for a nursing home and prevent them from being isolated from others. “We want to keep people independent,” Deric said. “We will help you with things like your bathing, meals and laundry, but we won’t do it (completely) for you.” To learn more about the Juanita Potts Family Home, visit www.jpfamilyhome.com or call Deric at 294-3072. “It’s named after my mother who is probably the most caring and loving person I’ve ever known,” he said. The public is welcome to tour the home during an open house from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
