COSHOCTON – Coshocton Hospital and the members of the Ohio Nursing Association (ONA) have announced the selection of Mark Nelson, RN, as the 2013 Coshocton Hospital Nurse of the Year. Nelson joined Coshocton Hospital in 1996 as an aide in the hospital’s extended care unit. After completing his education at Kent State Tuscarawas Campus, he joined the ED staff as a registered nurse and has worked in that department for over 15 years. Nominations for this honor are accepted from Coshocton Hospital’s nursing union members, who vote by secret ballot to select the winning candidate. The nurse of the year selection is based on overall aspects of patient care as well as the nominee’s overall commitment to the practice of nursing reflected in leadership, commitment and organizational involvement. The nomination cited Nelson’s willingness to go above and beyond for his patients and his co-workers. In addition to his nursing duties, he also serves as the ED education nurse, providing ongoing education to all ED staff. He also took a leadership role in the recent development and rollout of the new computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system for the ED physicians and providers. Nelson expressed surprise at winning this

WITH CARE
COSHOCTON – Don’t let the snow and cold weather keep you from attending the second annual Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Kids America. The expo, geared toward keeping you and your family safe and healthy in 2014, will feature over 30 vendors who will provide valuable information on how their organization can help you stay healthy this year and for years to come. This free event offers many activities for the whole family. Browse through the various stations while the kids have some of their own fun on the indoor soccer field with activities led by the Youth Asset Leadership Team (YALT). Take a tour of Kids America’s facilities and learn about the different programs they offer to help you reach your fitness goals. If you are an older adult, ask about their Silver Sneakers program which is an exercise program specifically designed for your age group. How are you doing with your overall general health? Are you eating the right foods, exercising regularly, taking time out of your busy day to relax and reduce stress? Is your cholesterol too high or do you have a risk of developing diabetes? Find out these and much more by taking the general health profile provided by the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital. Although the event is free of charge, there is a small fee of $35 for this health assessment. The test checks areas such as iron levels, sodium levels, glucose, calcium and protein levels, and much more. Other tests provided by the hospital include thyroid testing, prostate testing, diabetes testing, and colo-rectal cancer. “People can come to the expo and get some free testing,” said Amy Stockdale, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. “It’s not all about fitness. It’s more of the whole scope of family wellness.” The vendors at the expo range from eye health, ear health, and fitness, to overall home safety. The Red Cross will have information on emergency preparedness for your family. “It

COSHOCTON – The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is gearing up for A Playground of Color, an annual exhibit featuring the best of local elementary art. To kick off the exhibit and to get the kids inspired and motivated, the museum had a class Saturday, Jan. 11 which encouraged students to sketch their own faces. The classes began with a photo session where each student had his or her photo taken. They then used this photo as a model for their drawings. The class, taught by artist Jennifer Bush, studied their face and then began drawing. First, they sketched their face with a box over their paper just to see what results they would get. Most of their finished drawings looked like caricatures. However, the students continually got better as they practiced. In the next exercise, the students drew their faces in 10 seconds, 30 seconds, two minutes, 10 minutes, and finally 30 minutes. “We’re learning how to practice drawing portraits at different speeds to get better,” said Jonathan Arnold, who participated in the class. The goal of the class, other than to inspire local students to participate in A Playground of Color, is to teach students how to properly sketch a human face. “I want them to recognize the face,” said Bush. “It’s about drawing what you see, not what you know. Some young kids might draw the eyes at the very top of the head, and they

towards the Dolly Parton Imagination Library free book program. The program allows any 0-5 age child living in Coshocton County to have a free book sent to them monthly. Books are age appropriate and change from year to year. Currently there are 750 Coshocton children participating in the program and 887 children have graduated, so over 1,500 children have benefitted from it. “The Montgomery Foundation was vital to the start of this program in 2008, donating $45,000 over five years and we could not have continued it without their help,” said Lyn Mizer, Executive Director. “Now, with this new contribution, we can ensure the books will be delivered through 2014 and into 2015.” Other grants that have made this program possible have come from the Coshocton Foundation, The Simpson Family Foundation, Clow Foundation, COTC, AEP Foundation, Kiwanis, Rotary, Family and Children First Coucil, Elks, and Dave Burns Youth Fund. The United Way of Coshocton is working with the three county school systems to determine if those children participating in the program test higher in kindergarten readiness than those not participating. So far, Ridgewood schools have shown a 9% higher level for those children getting the free books from Dolly Parton Imagination Library than those not. Scores have not been available from Coshocton or River View yet. If you would like to register your child for this free book program, call the United Way office at 622-4567.

HEAP program provides assistance with CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON heating bills
A former Tiverton resident had been highly honored by the government officials in Japan. Mrs. Masaki Kumagai, formerly Ina May Gamertsfelder of Coshocton County, and now a resident of Tokyo, had been awarded a medal for 30 years of distinguished service as an English teacher to students in Japan. She was born in Tiverton Township in 1896 and moved to Coshocton in 1920 where she had taught school at Chestnut Elementary. She graduated from Otterbein College in 1924 and moved to the Orient as a missionary for the United Brethren Church. When she returned to her home country five years later, she met and married Rev. Masaki Kumagai who was studying in New York at that time and they returned to Japan shortly after. Mrs. Kumagai first became interested in missionary work and the country of Japan when her father, John Gamertsfelder, made a contribution to help build a church in that country.

West Lafayette Elementary had a new way to honor a book lover on his or her birthday. The elementary school library was expanding to add more books for students to read. Residents of West Lafayette were encouraged to donate a book in honor of a loved one on their birthday. To commemorate the person chosen, the inside cover of the book would feature their name and their name would also be added to a large birthday cake made out of permanent materials that would stay at the library indefinitely. The West Lafayette PTO had made the first contribution of $25 and 20 books had already been donated.

Students at South Lawn brought new meaning to the phrase, Walk softly and carry a big stick. The students were arguably some of the safest pedestrians in the county as each child carried a fluorescent stick about 14 inches long. The sticks were used to combat the darkness as they walked to school each morning during the winter months. The sticks had been either painted a bright red-orange color or wrapped in florescent tape so that motorists’ headlights would reflect off the sticks, possibly saving the child’s life. Harold Ott, school principal, said if the “stick idea” was successful, the PTO planned to introduce the idea to other schools.

What would you give to be 16 again? Some Coshocton County residents got that opportunity at the Coshocton County’s Joint Vocational School’s hands-on program. More than 80 participants from the board of education, school districts, news media, and community leaders participated in the program that gave them an idea of what students do at the vocational school. Richard Reveal, JVS guidance counselor, said that the program was designed to introduce the many programs available at the school to adults and to provide a trial run of a program that would be presented to interested sophomores the next month. Community leaders got to try their hands at auto body repair, carpentry, cosmetology, restaurant operations, and more offered by the school. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

WARSAW – President and CEO of Echoing Hills Village, Inc., Buddy Busch, recently testified before the Ohio House Finance and Appropriations Committee on SB 206 at the invitation of State Representative Bill Hayes. Busch stated that two important areas for individuals with special needs are where they live and where they spend their days. For Echoing Hills Village, Inc., this led to the creation of echoingU, a college preparatory program for young adults with special needs. The program focuses on skills necessary for success in the community like money management, finding an apartment and training for future job searches. It also helps individuals establish connections with local businesses. “I believe the program is consistent with the Governor’s Employment First Initiative,” said Busch. Instead of paying for services to care for these individuals, he said the program is an investment in them. “EchoingU is an investment in their future where they can find a job and give back to the community.” Echoing Hills Village Inc. is a non-profit ministry dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to know and experience Jesus Christ. Echoing Hills believes that all people with disabilities can live purposeful lives with dignity and respect. Through residential, vocational, educational and recreational services, they assist people with special needs to achieve their highest potential. Echoing Hills Village operates four locations in Coshocton County: Echoing Hills Village, Inc. Corporate Office, Echoing Hills Residential Center, Camp Echoing Hills and Community Connections of Coshocton County.

Ask someone why they volunteer, and chances are their response will have something to do with making a difference in the lives of others. While this is one of the top reasons to volunteer, there are others. People volunteer for a variety of reasons. Some of these include: To make an impact, To inspire others and be inspired, To support a cause, To fulfill a need and feel needed, To take on a challenge, To try something different, To explore new fields, To foster understanding, To become a better leader, To learn new skills and improve old ones, To develop talents, To build knowledge, To network, To expand a resume, To earn academic credit, To teach kids the value of helping others, To get to know others, To be part of a team, To learn more about the community, To keep busy, To repay a debt, To build confidence, To reach a goal, To gain a better perspective, To be part of something bigger than themselves People have their own reasons for volunteering, and whether for a short time or a lifelong habit, volunteering really does make a difference. Many organizations could not exist without the assistance of volunteers, and volunteers often gain valuable skills and contacts while helping out. Volunteering is a win-win situation for all!

refilling containers as needed, cleaning up all spills and messes, and getting rid of any wilted produce. The smallest of efforts can pay off big at the farmer’s market.
Community
BEACON FILE PHOTO You don’t farm on a wide scale, but you have a decent-sized truck patch that you fill with all kinds of produce each year. You usually end up with more than enough food to fill your family’s freezers and cabinets, and this year, you have decided to sell the surplus at the local farmer’s market. Farmer’s markets can be a great place to sell produce, crafts and other items. In order to be successful, you need to bring your best goods and people and set up an attractive display. If your products and service don’t appeal to buyers, you won’t sell a thing. The best displays are clean, well-stocked and easy to maneuver through. You may use tables, crates, baskets and the like to display your goods. Just make sure you clean all produce and store it at least six inches off the ground. To pull buyers to your display, dress it up with linens and mix shapes, sizes and colors of
produce. This will create interest and depth. Arrange containers so that buyers can see them from a distance and get to them up close. Keep buyers at your display by placing goods so they are readily accessible, especially to the disabled, and posting prices where they can be easily seen. Make sure all writing is legible and all prices are correct. You don’t want to accidentally charge more or less for an item than it is worth. To complete your display, check that everyone working behind the tables is dressed appropriately and up to the task. Casual attire, like jeans and a T-shirt and tennis shoes, is perfectly acceptable; tank tops, halter tops, short shorts, flip-flops and the like are not. Smiling, helpful faces are always a welcome sight. If one of your workers is under the weather or feeling stressed, don’t hesitate to send them home. Remember, they are representing you and your hard work in the field. Make sure they dress and act the part. When it comes to selling goods at a farmer’s market, presentation is everything. Make certain you have displayed your goods attractively and offer friendly service. Check your display often,
