During the meeting, the Commissioners informed Crawford that the Sheriff’s Office will tentatively receive almost $2.7 million.

Last year the Sheriff’s Office received around $2.5 million, but the Commissioners and Crawford feel the new amount will help them put an extra deputy in the county and take care of the vehicle for him or her.

The Jan. 9 meeting also included a continued discussion of on-call hours for the county maintenance and IT departments.

No official agreement on the issue was released, but the commissioners are preparing a policy on the topic and how to compensate employees who are on-call. Once the policy is typed up, it will be reviewed by the commissioners before a final decision is made.

“It will be a little bit of trial and error,” said Commissioner Dane Shryock.

At the meeting, the commissioners also swore in Garry Derr to the Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

The goal of the Soil & Water Conservation District is to help landowners wisely use their natural resources.

A motion to sign a letter of termination to the Coshocton County Amphitheater and the Coshocton County Regional Airport Authority to terminate the lease of the property located at 24632 Airport Road, effective Dec. 31, 2012, also was presented during the meeting.

“When the Amphitheater was building restrooms, it received a grant that needed to go through a county office,” said Mary Beck, the commissioners’ clerk. “The Commissioners agreed to a lease so the project could get done, but after the project was done no one thought about the lease. When we were audited, it was brought up so now we have to terminate the lease.”

Also on the Jan. 9 agenda was: - Request a motion approving a Blanket Meeting Request for Coshocton County Coordinated Transportation Staff to attend meeting, conferences and seminars for the 2013 calendar year.

- Request a motion to accept the Officials Bond for Frederick T. Wachtel, Coshocton County Engineer in the amount of $2,000.

- Receive the Report of Municipal Court Fines for the 2012 Calendar year from Judge Timothy France, Coshocton Municipal Court.

- Receive the Auditor’s Certificate of Total Appropriations from each fund that does exceed the last amended official estimate of resources.

- Receive the Official Amended Certificate of Estimated Resources dated Jan. 2, from the Coshocton County Budget Commission.

WEST LAFAYETTE – An idea of Ann Curry’s to honor those who were killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. spread across the nation and into the hearts of students and staff at Ridgewood Elementary.

“It seemed like a good way to honor the souls of those lost,” said Tina Stoffer, Elementary Title I Remedial Reading Teacher. “We tried to be as kind as we could to each other and remember to say please and thank you all week.”

The week of kindness was wrapped up Friday with an all white party. The halls were decorated with snowflakes and students and staff were invited to dress in white. The staff also brought in white foods to share with their fellow employees.

“Things like oranges have been showing up in your mailbox, kids are holding doors for each other and the students also are doing little things to be helpful in the classrooms,” Stoffer said. “Being kind has been real contagious and it’s been neat to find something someone did.”

The week also helped the school further focus on its program of teaching good character traits.

“A student can be nominated by teachers and other staff members if they are demonstrating

PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS those traits,” said Leslie Dulgar, the guidance counselor. “The student’s names go into a bucket for Mr. Rentsch to randomly draw several throughout that month. Each student receives a certificate, t-shirt and a character trait bookmark. Our goal is to curb bullying issues by focusing and encouraging students to exhibit positive behaviors.”

Barbara Jean Miskimens Weaver

Barbara Jean Miskimens Weaver went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 8:40 a.m.

She also joins her beloved husband, John Ambrose Weaver, whom she married on August 28, 1954 and her parents, Earl James and Bessie Hilda Cox Miskimens.

She was the third of four children, the late Eileen (Rodney) McCullough and Patricia (Don) Berkfield, an older brother, E.J. Junior, whom she never met.

Barbara is also survived by three great grandsons, Larry Johnston, Lucas Lovett and Dayton Jacks and four great granddaughters, Samantha Johnston, Sarah West, Savannah Appleman and Addison Lothes. Barbara loved her family dearly but most especially being GG to her great grandchildren.

Barbara was very active and involved in her community while raising her girls. She was a Girl Scout leader and loved camping, boating and swimming with her daughters

TOGETHER AGAIN and her Scouts.

She enjoyed chaperoning for her daughters field trips and having their friends at her home. She was a Red Cross volunteer who taught her swimming lessons. She was an asset to her community collecting money for Easter Seals, the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society. She was proud to represent her community as Senior Canal Queen in 2003.

Barbara will be dearly missed by many of her dear friends and coworkers.

She was a loyal friend to many, whom she transported to and from medical appointments, all whom she helped care for during their final days. She was her husband, John’s primary caregiver for 30 years. She was a hardworking and loyal employee having worked at the Bon Bon and Andy’s Restaurant, Corner Carry Out, The Ohio State Liquor Store, O’Neil’s, Stage, Wal-Mart and Fashion Bug, where she ended her retail career in 2009. She loved working with the public and treated people with respect.

Barbara was a member of Coshocton High School’s class of 1955 and was active in planning their many reunions and monthly luncheons.

Barbara was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, grandmother and GG. She fought hard to get well and stay with her beloved family.

She was raised in the Calvary Methodist Church, that later united with the Park Methodist Church. However she joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church when she married. She was very faithful and felt close to God. She was especially comforted by prayer.

Barbara’s Celebration of life will be held at Sacred Heart Church with calling hours on Friday, January 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Schools Gymnasium.

The Funeral Mass will be at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, January 19th at 11:00 p.m.

I had the pleasure to meet with some doctors and health professionals in the community and outside of Coshocton.

I had requested to them to continue the care that I could not do in the meantime. I do not know how long this process will take to be completed but I hope that we can resolve these matters as soon as possible. I am letting you know that my office will continue operating the same schedule as before.

You may know, proceedings have been commenced against me in Coshocton County regarding certain aspects of my prescribing practices for controlled substances in the treatment of obesity. While this matter is pending, I have agreed to cease prescribing any controlled substances whatsoever; however I am permitted to continue my medical practice and to continue prescribing non controlled medications. I am very hopeful that I will be able to resolve all of these concerns in a prompt and proper fashion but in the meantime I hope you will understand the situation and continue to work with me under this current limitation. I will do all in my power to make suitable alternate arrangements and accommodations in those situations where

January 20th, 1963 Ralph Nelson of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn. in Washington D.C. awarded a certificate of achievement to Edward Porteus and Charles Peiter of West Lafayette after their completion of the 360 Degree Rating Clinic at the Ohio State University. The two airmen, along with many other flight instructors, took and passed the 360 Degree Rating Clinic class, which was a uniform system of study for a non-professional pilot who wished to become more proficient and fly more safely by learning basic instrument techniques.

1973

January 20th, 1973 William Miller, president of Muskingum College, announced that Coshocton would have a branch campus of Muskingum College beginning in September, providing freshmen courses and using facilities at the Coshocton High School. These courses would be exactly the same as those offered to freshmen at the main campus and credits would be transferable to any college or university. The tuition rate was $135 per course. Creation of the Coshocton branch was a joint effort of the Coshocton Area Chamber of Commerce, Muskingum College, and the Coshocton City Board of Education.

1983

January 16th, 1983 In 1983, the USA Amateur Boxing Federation sanctioned the Coshocton Boxing Club, which had been in existence for four years.

Three hours a night, five nights a week, nine months out of the year, this group of 15 – 20 young men met at the Eagles Lodge 761 on Main Street to work out and challenge each other mentally and physically in the ring. It was started by William Gottardi in 1979 in his garage. It then moved to the Armory, but due to lack of space, the Eagles offered to take them in. The club had sent 17 boys to the Ohio District Golden Gloves Championship, producing 12 champions and four runner-ups.

COSHOCTON – Having blood products on hand is vitally important to hospitals.

“We were having a (blood) drive about 2 ½ years ago and a patient came in who was basically bleeding to death,” said Don Stroup, an employee of the lab at Coshocton Hospital and site coordinator for American Red Cross Blood Drives that are held there. “That patient was issued 106 blood products and during our drive we only collected 75. That right there tells you how important it is for everyone to give, which only 4 percent of the population does.”

January 22nd, 1953 At 11 p.m. the previous Monday, the Coshocton General Electric Plant surpassed the world’s safety record for the laminated plastics industry, which was previously held by the Formica Co. in Cincinnati. The new record was set when employees accumulated a total of 3,415,000 man hours without a lost-time accident at the local plant. The last lost-time accident occurred Oct. 11, 1950, according to factory records. The previous holder of the award accumulated 3,016,118 hours without an accident. The Coshocton plant received the National Safety Council’s Award of Honor in the form of a plaque and had a banner displayed at the plant entrance.

“Donating blood is a simple thing to do, but can make a big difference in the lives of others,” Stroup said. “The donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour and 15 minutes. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average.

The steps to the process are: Registration, health history/mini physical, donation and refreshments.

“Your gift of blood may help up to three people,” Stroup said. “Donated red blood cells do not last forever and have a shelf life of up to 42 days.”

Donors are encouraged to come back every 56 days.

“Our donors are a valuable asset,” Stroup said. “Community members, employees and anyone who comes we just love. I can’t say enough about the response we get at our drives.”

The Hospital averages 50 to 60 people at each of its drives, but like other sites that host blood drives, there are several factors that impact the success of the event.

“The flu, weather, holidays and vacations all impact whether or not we reach our goals,” Stroup said. “Right now the negative types of blood are in demand.”

COSHOCTON - The Krazy Keys children’s art class has been revamped and now will be offered at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.

Participants will create a work of art using keys - computer keyboards, hammers from a piano’s keyboard and lock keys. Painting, printmaking and assemblage will all be incorporated into a sculptural piece that will be installed in the elementary art exhibit, A Playground of Color.

Thanks to the exhibit’s sponsor, Dixie Fishbaugh, the class will be offered at a nominal cost - $1. Instructors Anne Thomas and Jenn Bush will direct the class to think out of the box as students imagine new ways to see and use the keys. They’ll make designs using the keys, tear apart the keyboards to rearrange the parts, and then figure out how best to install the end product within the gallery.

Lots of art supplies and construction hardware will be available so there is no telling how the sculpture will turn out. This is a class for children who love to think freely or children who need encouragement to explore on their own and problem solve. The class is geared for youth ages nine to 13.

CONESVILLE - Students at Conesville Elementary explored the exciting world of chemistry Tuesday, Jan. 8 when COSI on Wheels showed them that science can be interesting and fun.

This is COSI’s return to Conesville after seven years.

The topic, “Simply Chemistry” featured about nine different stations where kids could interact with different chemistry experiments. Students were able to write secret messages with invisible ink, make liquids glow in the dark, create their own burp in a bottle, and make their own slime, which is what they were

“Today, we want them to learn that everyone can do science and science is fun,” said Principal Joel Moore.

All grades pre-kindergarten through 6th grade were able to participate in the event on a rotation schedule. Eighteen parents volunteered their time and a lunch was provided to those volunteers by the PTO, which also sponsored the event.

“The thing I hope they take away from today is that science is something anyone can do,” said Katie Krenelka, COSI outreach educator, “You don’t have to be a genius to do science. It’s all about being good observers of the world around you. My goal is to get kids interested in science for life.”

As we have ended another year and entered into 2013, I would like to send a very, very, big and heartfelt, “THANK YOU” to each and everyone who has helped in one way or another with the Community Food Pantry and the Community Outreach Dinners this past year.

You have sacrificed your time, money, energy, and have shown your love and concern for our community. You worked, cooked, baked, donated, packed grocery bags, pushed grocery carts in the ice, snow, rain and heat to peoples cars, unloaded trucks, served people and anything else you were asked to do. I Thank all of the Pastors who allowed offerings and food drives for the pantry to take place in their churches. God Bless each of you! Thank You to all local businesses and schools, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Darr Farms, Heart of Ohio Quilters Guild, VFW’s and American Legion, Am Vets, Kraft Foods and Annin Flag Co., Aldi Foods, Bakers Foods, Buehlers Food Market, Bob Evans, Mr. Robert Haines and The International Packaging Company, Wal-Mart of Coshocton, Roberta’s Catering, Kellogg Company of Zanesville & Mr. Dave Powers and his wonderful crew in the kitchen at the Hospital, The Cheez Cake Bakery and all the private individuals who give financially month after month. We could have done nothing without any of you.

For the Community Outreach Dinner on Thanksgiving Day we delivered 614 meals and fed 140 people in the church including our help. For the Christmas Dinner we delivered 526 meals and including our help we served 120 meals in the building. There was a total of 124 turkeys and 64 hams cooked for the meals. What was left went to Pastor Starkey at Shepherds Christian Assembly to help with the lunches they serve on a weekly basis. Concerning the Community Outreach Dinners I am not sure we will do them next year for various reasons. There will be more to come on this program

Concerning the Food Pantry, it has been a different kind of year. Our food costs for the government purchased food went up over 300% and plus to have our food shipped over from Columbus it is between 400600 dollars a month. In six months I purchased over 75,000 pounds of food from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

I had to cut back the amount of food we give to families by one half but they still get quite a bit of food. I keep a low inventory here at the church since I get a truck every week. People can use and want meat more than the canned goods and I am focusing on that issue. We are just doing the basics and I have been getting food from another source that charges me the same price as the government food and they deliver to me once a week for ten dollars. I do not have a weight number of the amount of food we purchased and gave out as I go by the number of cases and not weight with the new company. We had a lot more come in from food drives.

We also received and gave out around 3,500 pounds of deer meat through the Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Program. We received from our local Wal-Mart Store thru the Feeding America Program 76,386 pounds of baked goods, dry goods, meat and produce. This is a wonderful program and has really helped our Community. We are currently serving over 635 people each month through the Food Pantry at this time. Thank You for caring about our community and stay encouraged in what the Lord has done and is going to do in 2013. As we work together we will come through these challenging times and be better people for it.

The pinning ceremony is a long-held tradition marking the passage of student to the ranks of professional nursing. The ceremony originated in the 1860s at London’s Nightingale School of Nursing. Florence Nightingale, who had recently been awarded the Red Cross of St. George for her selfless service to the injured and dying in the Crimean War, chose to extend this honor to outstanding nursing graduates by presenting each of them with a medal for excellence.

COSHOCTON - The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission recently honored employees reaching a milestone in their tenure with the agency during an employee recognition luncheon.

Those recognized for five years of service included: Karol Church-Kash and Bobbi Speicher, dental clinic; Nancy Fortune, administration; Jean Jacobs, senior center; and Thomas Taylor, weatherization.

Ten year employees honored were Mary Beckholt, VP of finance; Bradlee Collmar, weatherization; Charles Mitch Dewitt and Jennifer Murch-Morano, Head Start.

But Kulhanek said attendees won’t actually become “certified in GAPs” by taking the course. That certification, she said, comes only through having one of many possible farm audits conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture or a third-party company.

“Find out what your farmers market or buyers require,” she said. “Some may be satisfied with just a class on GAPs, others may require the full food safety farm plan and audit, or both.”

COSHOCTON - Ohio State University’s Fruit and Vegetable Safety Team will have a program on preventing microbial contamination on fruit and vegetable farms from 6 - 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Coshocton County Services Building, Room 125, located at 724 S. Seventh St. Food safety and Good Agricultural Practices, or GAPs, for fruit and vegetable production are the focus.

“The Food and Drug Administration has just released draft standards for safe production and harvest of fruits and vegetables as part of the Food Safety Modernization Act,” said Ashley Kulhanek, the team’s program coordinator.

“Whether or not a farm will be exempt from these rules, the new year is a good time to learn about GAPs.” The instructors will be educators with OSU

• Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet by eating iron rich foods, such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals and raisins.

• Get a good night’s sleep.

• Drink an extra 16 oz. of water or nonalcoholic fluids before the donation.

• Eat a healthy meal before your donation.

Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice cream before donating.

(Fatty foods can affect the tests we do on your blood. If there is too much fat in your blood, your donation cannot be tested for infectious diseases and the blood will not be used for transfusion.)

• If you are a platelet donor, remember that your system must be free of aspirin for two days prior to donation.

• Remember to bring your donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of ID.

• Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.

• Let the person taking your blood know if you have a preferred arm and show them any good veins that have been used successfully in the past to draw blood.

• Relax, listen to music, talk to other donors or read during the donation process.

• Take the time to enjoy a snack and a drink in the refreshments area immediately after donating.

AFTER YOUR DONATION

• Drink an extra four (8 ounce) glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol over the next 24 hours.

• Remove the wrap bandage (if you had one put on your arm) within the next hour.

• Keep the strip bandage on for the next several hours.

Did you know?

• To avoid a skin rash, clean the area around the strip bandage with soap and water.

• Do not do any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day.

• If the needle site starts to bleed, apply pressure to it and raise your arm straight up for about 5-10 minutes or until bleeding stops.

• If you experience dizziness or lightheadedness after donation, stop what you are doing and sit down or lie down until you feel better. Avoid performing any activity where fainting may lead to injury for at least 24 hours.

Since 1970, January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month in the United States to recognize those who donate blood during one of the most challenging months for blood collections organizations like the American Red Cross.

Every day, about 44,000 units of blood are transfused in the United States. And while that need is constant, blood donations often slump during the winter months, and particularly in January. More than any other month, January often brings many challenges to blood collections, such as extreme temperatures and weather which can keep people from giving, icy roads which can cause more accidents, and even cold and flu symptoms which make many people not eligible to donate. These challenges make it even more important for donors to give blood during January if they can.

“Blood donors are very special people whose only reward is typically the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped save someone’s life,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager for the American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region. “January is the perfect time of year to honor blood donors and their commitment to saving lives.”

Each year, about 9.5 million volunteers donate around 16 million units of whole blood and red blood cells. About 20 percent of these donors are giving blood for the first time.

“Most everyone at some point in their lives will meet someone who has received blood products,” said Wilson. “Its people we know

COSHOCTON - The Friends of the Parks had a lot to talk about at their annual meeting Jan. 7 in the Park District Office at Lake Park.

Lori Everhart, park director, presented the group with her 2012 year in review report. She shared with The Friends of the Parks that six memorial trees were donated, four memorial benches were donated and that the Indian Mud Run had more than 500 participants and raised $13,000 for the Park District.

However, the June 29, 2012, wind storm caused big problems for Lake Park and Hilltop Golf Course. Property damage totaled more than $48,000 and the cleanup of trees and debris cost more than $30,000. A power outage also caused the facilities to be closed for five days and about $27,000 in revenue to be lost.

“That is the main reason our finances are crummy this year,” Everhart said. “We took a big hit and are still waiting on FEMA reimbursements.”

She also discussed the rehabilitation project for the bridge and the proposal to have the mussels found near it relocated if necessary.

A grant and pledges are helping to pay for the project.

Everhart also announced that she was pleased with the number of volunteers who helped with various park events in 2012. She also hopes the support continues for the 2013 events that are already scheduled: Feb. 9 – Sweetheart Big Band

Chris Wilson, an organizer of Taste For Summer, also presented the group with another event idea that they could have in conjunction with his.

“The event raises money for Clary Garden, but I really see it as a county-wide kick off for summer,” he said.

The May 18 event, which is at Clary Gardens, also will feature aerial tours of the county arranged through the Richard Downing Airport and a nine and wine for golf enthusiasts.

Wilson thought an outdoor expo at Lake Park Pavilion would also go well with these events and be another way for the Park District to raise funds for itself.

“It’s a good concept, but we’d have to push to put it together especially with our levy also being in May,” Everhart said.

Irene Miller from The Friends of the Parks also supports the idea but not the timing.

“It’s a super idea and perfect for the park, but we have to be realistic,” she said. “It’s vital that we put all our efforts into the levy. Hopefully next year we can put together a committee and do it.”

The Friends of the Parks will have a levy campaign meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Lake Park Pavilion. Anyone interested in helping to promote the need to pass the park levy, which will be on the May ballot, is welcome to attend.

The committee is planning on finalizing verbiage for the levy to be submitted to the Board of Elections and then hit the ground running spreading the word about it.

“The last campaign had a good foundation,” said Dave Erwin from the park board. “This one is going to be a little lower key than what we did before. We are going to target people who will support us rather than the outlying township people who you could talk to forever and still not get to change their vote.”

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton High School pool provided plenty of action on Saturday, Jan. 12 with the CHS Invitational. Swimmers from Cambridge, Coshocton, Dover, Garaway, Heath, John Glenn, New Philadelphia, Ridgewood, Tri-Valley, River View and Watkins Memorial participated in the event.

Overall, the Dover girls finished first with Coshocton placing second and River View sixth.

Dover finished first in the boys with Cambridge finishing second, Coshocton third and River View fourth.

Of note, the Redskins girls 200 SC meter medley team of Georgia Brown, Hannah Ringenberg, Emily Simpson and Emily Baker broke their own record with a time of 2:18:88, finishing behind Dover.

In the girls’ 200 meter freestyle, Coshocton senior Emily Baker placed first with a time of 2:19:79, and Kaitlyn Salmans came in third with a time of 2:31:04.

Redskins junior swimmer Marc Smith placed first in the boys’ 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:15:05. Jacob Blank of Coshocton had a time of 2:22:38.

River View sophomore Lydia Els placed first in the girls 200 meter IM with a time of 2:43:99. Senior Coleston Pope helped the Bears sweep the 200 meter IM with a time of 2:23:67 in the boys swim.

Alex Wheeler came in second for Coshocton with a time of 2:30:70.

The always fast and furious 50 meter swim was a good one for River View’s Dalton Hammond, who finished third with a time of 28:41.

Coshocton senior Emily Baker continued a successful season in the girls’ 100 meter freestyle, garnering a first place time of 1:03:02.

Lone Ridgewood sophomore swimmer Brian Rogers took first in the boys’ 100 meter freestyle with a time of 57:41.

The Bear’s Dalton Hammond came in fourth at 1:03:65.

For River View, Lydia Els swam her way to a first place in the girls’ 500 meter freestyle with a time of 6:16:54. The longest event of the day, the 500 meter is a brutal assault on muscles and endurance, with each lap of the pool being 50 meters. CHS Emily Simpson placed fourth in the event, with a time of 6:41:93.

The Bears dominated the 500 with senior swimmer Coleston Pope placing first for the boys with a time of 5:44:89.

The Redskins lady swimmers placed third in the 200 meter freestyle relay with a time of 2:10:98. The team consisted of Georgia Brown, Casey Fortney, Jacqueline Roman and Kaityln Salmans.

Brian Rogers for the Generals placed second in the boys 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:14:51.

Rounding out the events for the day, the Coshocton Lady Redskins swimmers placed second in the 400 meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:35:07. Kaitlyn Salmans, Emily Simpson, Hannah Ringenberg and Emily Baker made up the quad.

The CHS boys 400 team also placed second behind Dover, with a time of 4:09:97. Marc Smith, Jacob Blank, Bryce Philabaum and Alex Wheeler swam for the Redskins. River View finished just behind Coshocton with a time of 4:10:76. Dalton Hammond, Garrett Gee, Brendan Dickson and Coleston Pope swam for the Bears.

Special briefing focuses on issues impacting landowners with older leases COSHOCTON - I have an old oil and gas lease on my property. How will this impact my family during the current shale drilling boom? Coshocton County community leaders and interested residents are invited to attend a special briefing exploring older lease issues and options, sponsored by the Coshocton County Landowners Group in conjunction with the Coshocton County Farm Bureau. The briefing will be at the Coshocton County Career Center on Wednesday Jan. 16 at 6 p.m.

The program will be facilitated by Dale Arnold, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) Director for Energy, Utility and Local Government Issues.

“Long-term energy demand and new drilling technology have sparked heightened oil and gas exploration in the Marcellus and Utica Shale deposits throughout eastern and central Ohio,”

Arnold said. “Communities are experiencing rapid growth, resource competition and potentially large inflows of bonus, land rental and royalty payments. Welcome to the boomtown.”

Lease agreements define business relationships between landowners and developers. While the terms and conditions for some new projects are detailed in new lease agreements, many more are governed by older leases signed years ago. These older leases were acquired through reassignment and lease portfolio purchases. Landowners with old leases incorporated into new projects want a better understanding of their options, potential benefits and responsibilities.

During the course of the briefing, Arnold will discuss basic lease concepts, remedies and actions landowners can take to have older leases canceled, opportunities whereby older leases

could be reopened for renegotiation, and current regulations in place offering resource protection and remediation.

Questions one should ask while selecting an attorney for legal advice/assistance, as well as matters to address if the family is considering selling all or part of their mineral rights and/or royalty provisions defined in an old lease will be explored.

Arnold has been involved in energy and utility related issues since 1995. He represents farm and rural residential energy consumers on a variety of government working groups and public utility advisory boards. He has extensive experience working with county Farm Bureaus and local residents, and works with organization leaders to help communities and families address issues surfaced in part by energy development.
