The students got to pick three 20 minute sessions to attend and school officials did their best to provide them with a wide variety of professionals from the community to hear from. “Our goal is to help them leave here (CHS) with particular jobs in mind that they want to strive for,” said Megan Hemming, school counselor. Nelson said they also want to help them make sure their goals meet their abilities. “If you have trouble with math and science then you might not want to major in something like engineering,” she said. The speakers at career day also encouraged the students to do some job shadowing or volunteer at a place they might like to work someday. “If you are interested at all in being a veterinarian you can come volunteer at my clinic,” said Dr. Jere Butcher, during his presentation on career day. “You can walk dogs, give baths and eventually help with surgery. Rally for pre-born children held at Upper Room Church BY BETH SCOTT
PRESENTATION Seth Drayer, creator and director of the Created Equal Ministries, gave a presentation at the Right to Life rally held Sunday, Jan. 18 in the Upper Room Church. BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – Concerned community members gathered at the Upper Room Church in the Civic Hall on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. to speak out for the victims of abortion. The program began with Pastor Stan Braxton of the Upper Room Church giving an invocation. Before the main presentation, Pastor Bill Dunfee of New Beginnings Ministries spoke a few words. “It’s not just a blob,” said Dunfee. “It’s not just tissue. It has feeling. It’s a life.” Seth Drayer, creator and director of Created Equal Ministries, gave a presentation about his ministry and why they believe life begins at the moment of conception. Created Equal Ministries is a group of approximately 50 students who travel the nation and speak out against abortion. They speak at high schools, colleges, and other organizations. “We care so much for the born human, but not so much for the preborn human,” said Drayer. “That might sound kind of funny, but it’s not because it’s a matter of life and death.” Drayer argued that scientific evidence supports the theory of life beginning at the time of conception and conveyed through his program that a pre-born human should have the same rights as a born human. He said there were only four differences between a pre-born child and a child already born: size, level of maturity, environment, and development. Drayer ended his program with a video of students from his Created Equal Ministries as they traveled the nation talking about abortion. “The goal is to train them (the students), send them out, and let them start conversations with people about abortion,” said Drayer. Sheldon Mencer ended the event with a song he wrote dedicated to victims of abortion entitled, “Only God Knows”. COSHOCTON - The 2015 ECOL championship swim meet was held Friday evening, Jan. 16 at the Janet Jones Natatorium at Coshocton High School with athletes from eight ECOL schools competing. Workshop teaches power of herbs COSHOCTON – Julia Brown has always had a passion for herbs, but she became even more interested in them after falling down her basement stairs and using them to help mend her injured back. Brown, who is now a certified master herbalist and owner of A Simpler Thyme Ltd., shared her knowledge of the impact herbs can have on your body at an herbal winter remedies workshop held Jan. 15 at Clary Gardens. “With a little planning you can have your own backyard medicine chest,” she said. “There are herbs for ever function of your body.” Brown is a firm believer that our Lord and Proud to serve the people of Coshocton and surrounding communities since 1896!

Creator put everything on this earth for a purpose. It’s just up to us to know how to utilize what we have. She started the workshop off by giving some tips on growing and harvesting your own herbs. The students learned that herbs should be harvested in the cool of the morning before dew is dried by the morning sun. She also explained that one way to dry them is to hang them in small bundles of five to six stems for approximately three to four weeks. The dried herbs can then be stored in glass jars, frozen in zip-lock freezer bags or chopped, mixed with a little water and then frozen in ice cube trays. With a little bit of work you will have herbs all winter long to add to soups, stews, recipes, teas and even baths. You also can make your own cold care capsules. Some herbs are known for their ability to help the body fight illness. A few of Brown’s favorites are: • Garlic – fights of colds, flues and sore throats. It boosts your immune system and is nature’s own antibiotic. Garlic also helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It also expels intestinal worms in humans and animals. • Ginger Root – terrific remedy for cramps, nausea, morning sickness, motion sickness and is a popular decongesting herb used for cold and flu type symptoms and respiratory congestion as well as sore throat. It also is a great anti-nausea remedy for chemo patients. • Echinacea – immune enhancing, infection fighting, all around powerhouse when it comes to strengthening and building up the body. • Elder – has immune boosting properties and is a helpful remedy for flues, herpes and shingles. It is also very effective for aiding upper respiratory infections and as a fever reducer. Just don’t eat them uncooked as our bodies can’t digest the seeds and they induce vomiting.

• Root Vegetables – are full of vitamins and trace minerals. A great way to use these herbs to help ward off sickness is by making a tincture. Brown explained that a tincture is a concentrated liquid herbal extract. It consists of herbs and a liquid solvent, usually pure grain alcohol. Apple cider vinegar or glycerin and water also can be used; however, alcohol pulls the most properties from the herbs. Tinctures typically marinate for four to six weeks, but ones made with alcohol can be used for years. Those who attended the workshop also received an herbal booklet full of recipes and got to enjoy an herbal tea sample. Fee for the class was $12 and proceeds went to the continuing growth of the garden. Clary Gardens is located at 588 W. Chestnut St. (SR 541 West). COSHOCTON – What is the American dream? “Some say the American dream today is just about survival, but it’s about more than materialism and Dr. King knew this,” said Ohio State Senator Jay Hottinger of the 31st Senate District of Ohio. Hottinger was the guest speaker at the Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast, which was held Jan. 19 at The Coshocton Christian Tabernacle and organized by the Greater Coshocton Community Development Corporation. “It’s about the freedom to choose how to live your life,” he said. “It’s about doing what you are called to do and being who you are called to be.” Hottinger challenged everyone in attendance to not just be dreamers, but dream makers. “One day someone will be thankful that you helped make their dream come true or made the world a better place,” he said. Musical entertainment at the breakfast was provided by Linda Weber who encouraged everyone to love one another. “Dr. Martin Luther King had a lot to say about love and he also knew God,” she said. “The only hope for our country is to put God back in our foundation and live by Godly morals.” Between songs, Weber also shared some quotes by King. “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend and let no man pull you so low as to hate them,” she read. Proceeds from the breakfast went to the Second Chance Homeless Shelter operated by The Greater Coshocton Community Development Corporation. Corporate Sponsors were Auer Ace Hardware and Century National Bank. “I hope your dreams are rooted in faith and a relationship with our creator and savior,” Hottinger said. JANUARY 23RD, 1955 Coshocton resident Marion Alexander VanKannel knows the meaning of hard work. He had never been unemployed for the past 75 years. At the age of 15, VanKannel began working on his father’s farm, who died when he was three years old. Since that time, he had been employed as a stone mason, a teacher, an implement dealer, and currently as a salesman at Montgomery Ward where he had worked for the last 24 years. As a beginning worker for stone masons, VanKannel made $0.05 a day and $1.50 a day as a teacher. He also had a great love of the Coshocton County Fair and hadn’t missed a fair in 70 years.

JANUARY 24TH, 1965 Mrs. Emler, a former resident of Plainfield who currently lived in Cambridge, Ohio, received a special piece of her family’s history as a Christmas present from her daughter. The gift was her great-grandmother’s spinning wheel that her daughter had restored. Mary Greentree Wiggins was the first to own the spinning wheel and settled with her husband Edward in a log cabin in Linton Township. The spinning wheel was used frequently to make a large amount of clothes as the couple had many children. Mrs. Elmer’s daughter told her mother that one day, she wanted the spinning wheel back so she could learn to spin.

JANUARY 23TH, 1985 The duties of a school nurse involve more than just applying band-aids and taking temperatures. Five county-wide school nurses were recognized during National School Nurses Day who attended to the health needs of approximately 6,750 students in the county. Their main objective was to educate students on how to remain healthy so that they wouldn’t have to miss school due to illness. The nurses’ duties included vision testing, screening for hearing problems, skin tests, and varifying immunizations were current. They saw students ages five to 18, so they dealt with a wide-variety of problems daily. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

COSHOCTON – The Ohio School Boards Association is celebrating School Board Recognition Month in January 2015 to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society. School Board Recognition Month honors the members of Ohio’s more than 700 city, exempted village, local, and joint vocational boards of education and educational service centers governing boards for their commitment to providing quality public education to Ohio’s school children. The Coshocton City School (CCS) District is joining with other districts throughout the state to recognize the important contributions school board members make to their communities, especially in light of all the constant changes and pressures associated with state mandates and financial pressures. “Ohioans benefit every day from the dedicated energies and countless hours devoted by a group of more than 3,400 men and women across the state,” said Dr. David Hire, superintendent. “These public servants are elected to serve by local citizens and receive little compensation for their tireless efforts. These men and women are the local school board members of Ohio. Board members unselfishly contribute their time and talents toward the advancement of public education. They represent a continuing commitment to local citizen control and decision-making in education. Even though we are making a special effort during the month of January to show appreciation to our CCS board members, we recognize their contributions reflect a yearround commitment on their part. They are dedicated individuals who are

BY JOSIE SELLERS COSHOCTON – Voters in the city will see a new levy on the May ballot that could impact their income taxes Coshocton City Council met Jan. 12 and passed Ordinance 1-15, placing on the ballot a proposal to raise city income tax an additional one half percent for law enforcement, criminal justice operations and general safety and security of the citizens and public areas. They also passed Resolution 1-15, which authorized the placement of the levy on the May 5th primary ballot. First readings only were given to the following ordinances: - Ordinance 2-15, which authorizes the mayor or service director to prepare specifications, advertise and let a bid for chlorine, fluoride, alum, lime, CO2, sodium, hexametaphosphate and gasoline. “This is something we do every year for the utilities department,” said Mayor Steve Mercer. - Ordinance 3-15, which is designed to amend the zoning map of the City of Coshocton. During the meeting Law Director Bob Skelton shared that his office had recently collected $20,000 in delinquent income taxes. Public Works Director Jim Ruby also teased the scarlet and gray clad council members with a long report, but said he would keep it short so they could get home for the OSU National Championship game. “We put in over 800 tons of pothole patching,” Ruby said. “That equals out to 100 days of pothole patching. We have to do better and change our logic.” Council President Cliff Biggers informed the other members that they had a report from the Coshocton Port Authority in their packets and that Port Authority Executive Director Dorothy Skowrunski would be e-mailing those out monthly. The students were split into four groups and attended workshops by current state FFA officers. The officers talked about leaders throughout history and how they impacted our nation. The students were also involved in many small team building activities. It was a successful evening and a great chance for our students to develop their leadership skills.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We’re 3.2 million strong—3.2 million girls and adults who believe every girl can change the world. It began over 100 years ago with one woman, Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. Today, we continue her vision of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place by helping them discover their inner strength, passions, and talents. And with programs from coast to coast and across oceans, there’s a chance for every girl to do something amazing. We’re the Girl Scouts. To volunteer, reconnect, donate, or join, visit www.girlscouts.org. CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON NEWARK — The Ohio State University at Newark is proud to present a reading of song lyrics from one of Great Britain’s premiere songwriters, Richard J. Thompson, OBE, at 8 p.m. on Jan. 23 in Founders Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public. Thompson’s songwriting earned him an Ivor Novello Award from The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA), and he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2011 for his body of work. His songs explore existential dilemmas and the dark side of human relationships. Thompson continues to write and record new material regularly and frequently performs live throughout the world. For more information, contact Dave Williams at 740.366.9474 or williams.1343@osu.edu. the Coshocton County College Fair Night, College 101 Financial Aid Workshops, FAFSA Assistance Night, College Campus Visits, ACT/ SAT test registration and preparation, college application and scholarship assistance. This year Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. developed a plan and began implementation of elementary level career-centered activities. “These activities have been made available to all Coshocton County school districts to assist them in meeting Ohio’s Career Connection Model,” Crilow said. “Many of the various activities introduce students to different occupations within their community and utilize hands-on activities for students to explore occupations at earlier ages.” Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. is continually looking for additional funding opportunities. Many grants utilized in past years are no longer available, so new sources need to be found for the program to continue its strong presence in the communities it serves. One such opportunity became a reality when Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. became a United Way Partner in 2013. “This partnership and funding has helped significantly in continuance of this valuable program” Crilow said. For information about Coshocton C.A.R.E.S, contact Crilow at 502-6345.

Though I’ve experienced it year after year, I still can’t wait for the start of Girl Scout Cookie season! Our Girl Scout Cookie Program runs now through March 22 and I couldn’t be more excited to see all the ways communities will show their support for our local Girl Scouts as they develop their budding business skills. The Cookie Program helps our girls gain and build five essential skills — goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. These skills will help them create bright futures for themselves and their communities. The Cookie Program also gives our girls the opportunity to earn money for troop activities, trips, and camping. Plus, it helps the council maintain great Girl Scout facilities for member and community use, while also providing financial assistance and other special opportunities for girls. As we launch into this amazing new cookie season, we’ll celebrate the 40th birthday of Samoas, offer customers a way to send cookies to troops overseas through our Operation Salute program, and help hungry customers locate cookies through the Cookie Request Form available on our website at gsoh.org/ cookie-request. In the meantime, we thank you for supporting Girl Scouts in your area. Your investment in a box (or several boxes) of cookies helps us deliver the best leadership experiences for girls and make good on our mission to build
