COSHOCTON – Bowling for Kids isn’t about who can knock down the most pins. It’s about helping children.

The event is an annual fundraiser for The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County which offers a variety of mentoring programs including: Bigs & Littles – matching adult volunteers and children ages 6-18; Peer Mentoring – designed to provide youth, grades 9-12, the opportunity to mentor; SMILES – school based mentoring; and Side By Side Parent Mentoring – a support program for parents. The center also offers educational opportunities for parents, professionals and mentors.

“We have a lot of real loyal supporters for Bowling for Kids,” said Sheila Mayse, executive director. “They know the children in our community are being well served by our programs.”

More bowlers, however, are always needed to make sure these programs continue.

“All you have to do is call us prior to the event and register your team,” Mayse said.

Bowling for Kids is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23 and lane times are 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., 1 to 2:45 p.m. and 3 to 4:45 p.m. at Coshocton Bowling Lanes.

“We always shoot to fill the lanes, but last year we were down a little bit so we are trying some new things,” Mayse said.

The Mentoring Center has planned bowling themed events to keep people’s minds on their annual fundraiser. The next one coming up is the Breakfast Bowl, which is scheduled for 6:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the center on the second floor of 410 Main St. For a minimum donation of $5 attendees can fill their bowls with breakfast goodies.

Anyone who attends the event and decides later on to get a bowling team together can do so by calling 623-8110 to register their team.

This year’s fundraiser will have a 1950s theme and participants are encouraged to raise at least $50.

“If we fill every lane and everyone raises at least the minimum amount we will reach our goal,” Mayse said. “Financially the last few

Coe, Ph.D., Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) president was honored for the college’s continuing support of the Annual Reynoldsburg Civil War Encampment and Reenactment. Dressed in Civil War-era uniforms, Event Co-Chairs and members of the Society of Civil War Surgeons Robert Mergel and Peter D’Onofrio presented Coe with two plaques signifying the college’s continuing support of their event.

Coe accepted the awards and expressed the college’s appreciation for what their reenactment represents. “Your event brings history to life for our students.” Adding, “It’s simply all about strengthening education.”

The award presentation was attended by Lifelong Learning Institute members. Launched in July 2004, the Institute offers a year-round menu of courses, “Coffee and Conversation” events, lectures, writing workshops, and book discussions hosted by COTC’s Pataskala Campus.

COSHOCTON – Mary Dobson likes taking care of people.

“I really enjoy the residents and spending time with them,” she said. “The money is not why I am here.”

Dobson, an employee of Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation – Coshocton, has worked as an STNA for 50 years. Her mother-in-law got her started in the field in 1963 after she was married.

She began her career at Haven of Rest Nursing Home, which was on South Sixth Street and spent some time at the Coshocton County Home before coming to her current location in 1974.

Dobson said as an STNA she is responsible for getting residents of Kindred in the bath or shower in the morning, helping them with their breakfast, helping them in and out of bed, getting them to the bathroom, answering their call lights when extra assistance is needed and taking care of paperwork.

One of the biggest changes Dobson has seen in her field over the years is how patients are moved.

“We have a lot more modern things to work with to lift them in and out of bed and transfer them and it helps a lot,” she said.

“I treat everyone the same,” she said. “My mom was even in here but I didn’t take care of her. I didn’t want anyone thinking I gave her more attention.”

Nothing keeps Dobson from enjoying what she does.

“I’ve seen some really, really bad cases, but I like my job,” Dobson said. “I couldn’t quit. I want to work.”

The 66-year-old works at Kindred three days a week and also has picked up some private

duty jobs.

“I enjoy caring for people and the responses you get from family members about how much they appreciate you,” Dobson said.

Her advice to anyone thinking about becoming an STNA is to make sure it is something you want to do.

“Everyone becomes like family and they keep you on the go,” Dobson said. “It’s not boring.”

Lynne Hill is one of the residents at Kindred who Dobson cares for.

“It (being an STNA) is a hard job,” Hill said.

“Someone is always wanting something, but we appreciate what they do. I can’t walk so I have to depend on someone else to help me.”

The new security change involves the addition of bifold doors at both the front and rear entrances to the treatment area. Patients will check in with the triage nurse located immediately inside the main ED entrance and will be escorted to a treatment room by an ED nurse as soon as a room is available. As in any emergency room, patients are seen in order of the severity of the patient’s condition. This allows the most life-threatening conditions to be treated quickly within accepted timelines to ensure the best chances for recovery from severe illness or injury.

In addition, visitors will be limited to two per patient at any one time. This allows ample space for physicians and nurses to provide care while recognizing the importance of the support provided by friends or family members. Each patient will be issued two visitor badges; only those visitors wearing badges will be admitted to the treatment area. A visitor telephone is located near the ED entrance. By lifting the receiver, visitors are connected to the unit desk attendant who can provide access according to the patient’s wishes. Internal push-button controls will allow visitors to exit the treatment area as needed.

COSHOCTON – Patients and visitors of the Coshocton Hospital Emergency Department (ED) will notice an important change beginning Monday, Feb. 11. As of that date, the ED will implement a secure access system designed for the safety, security and uninterrupted emergency care of its patients. The new system limits treatment room access to patients, authorized hospital staff and up to two visitors per patient.

employees while providing high quality care in the fast-paced emergency room environment,” said Jason Bryant, director of emergency services. “Patient and employee safety is compromised when anyone can wander in or out of the ED patient bays at will. By limiting access to only those necessary to provide medical care or patient support, we’re able to focus on the immediacy of emergency care in a more private, secure manner for our patients.”

The following is the process patients can expect when arriving at the emergency room: • Enter through the main sets of doors into the ED lobby and check in with the triage nurse.

• The nurse will quickly assess your condition and advise you to wait in the lobby for the ED nurse to escort you. You may be admitted immediately for treatment or you may need to wait; this will depend on the severity of your condition or the volume of patients already waiting for care.

• Two visitor badges will be issued per patient for visitors to use when requesting entry. Visitors can pick up the telephone receiver located outside the treatment entrance to be connected with the ED unit clerk to request admittance.

Visitors will be “buzzed in” as appropriate for the patient.

“The first point of contact for patients will continue to be our triage nurse,” said Bryant. “But our entire staff will happily assist with questions as we introduce this safety enhancement for our patients and employees.”

Elizabeth Gehrke had been chosen unanimously as the Family Service Volunteer of the year for 1962 at Lockbourne Air Force Base in Columbus. Mrs. Gehrke, originally from Coshocton, was the wife of Major Edward Gehrke, also from Coshocton.

Mrs. Gehrke had received the award for the second consecutive year from Colonel Lassiter, commander of the base who announced she had donated more than 1,600 hours to the Family Service Program, 325 hours in the past year alone.

Mrs. Gehrke was also Volunteer of the Month in July and Volunteer of the Year in 1961.

COSHOCTON - Marilyn’s Natural Foods, 430 Main St., will host a book signing for Bethany Thompson’s “Little Birdie,” a Civil War novel, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20. The Newcomerstown Public Library in Newcomerstown, 123 E Main St., is also hosting a book signing for Thompson from 3 - 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21.

Thompson’s mother, Susan Daugherty Thompson, taught second grade at Ridgewood’s West Lafayette Elementary for six years, and her father, Joe, is the director of the Ohio Wilderness Boys Camp, a therapeutic wilderness camp for emotionally-troubled boys.

Thompson’s uncle, Bill Daugherty, his wife, Caroline, and their family are well-known in Coshocton’s community. Her cousins, Kristen, Kari, and Andi Daugherty have all been part of River View’s Lady Bears basketball team.

Thompson’s grandfather, Martin Daugherty, and his wife, Greta, are still a part of the Daugherty farm. Thompson’s aunt, Patty Thompson, taught

Two local high school students had been selected to be featured in the seventh annual “Who’s Who Among American High School Students”. Ellen Neff, a senior at Coshocton High School, and Debra Lynn Mossman, a junior at River View High School, were the two honored students.

Inclusion in the national publication was an honor reserved to less than two percent of high school students in all 50 states. The two students were selected for their leadership in academics, school, student, and community affairs. They would have their biographies published in the magazine and compete for one of ten $1,000 scholarships.

Doris Green of West Lafayette and Virginia Big Soldier of Wisconsin had been writing to each other as pen pals for three years and finally had the chance to meet at Doris’ home. Doris began corresponding with Virginia when she read that Virginia was in a sanatorium and was looking for a pen pal. Virginia, who was of the Winnebago tribe, said she wrote over 30 pen pals when she was in the sanatorium, and still kept in contact with 10 now that she had been released, but Doris was the first one she had met. Virginia’s husband, Fred Big Soldier, was a first class sergeant serving in the United States army. Virginia planned to visit him in Germany soon.

Harold Kinkade Jr. had a huge love affair with old-time films. In fact, he had more than 250 8 mm reels in his extensive collection and enjoyed nothing more than displaying his films for various clubs to view. Kinkade became interested in movies when he used to visit one of the five theatres Coshocton offered. For a nickel, you could see as many films as you wanted in one day. He began collecting films after WWII and especially loved westerns. He also boasted an extensive knowledge of directors, actors, actresses, and studio history. His personal favorites in his collection were the Laurel and Hardy shorts.

and Family Services,” Rinkes said. “Over the years that grant has been reduced and reduced to the point where this school year we found out we were going to have zero dollars.”

Rinkes refused to let the program die and made cuts in his budget so it could continue two nights a week from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the school could still provide students with transportation home. The school’s SADD organization also held a Bridge the GAP fundraiser.

Last year alone G.A.P. served 238 students, and teachers in the program made 1005 contacts with students.

“It really has evolved over the years and become an extension of the school day,” Rinkes said. “Teachers utilize it and it doesn’t just help a small population. It’s school wide.”

He, however, needs the public’s help to win the Make A Difference NBC 4 School Grant and

WARSAW – The G.A.P. Afterschool Program is not an extra at River View High School. It’s a necessity and that is why Principal Chuck Rinkes applied for a $10,000 Make A Difference NBC 4 School Grant.

“Our goal is for students to leave here college and career ready and this program is very valuable in accomplishing that,” Rinkes said. “We’ve had several students and their parents mention in surveys that it is what got them through school.”

G.A.P., or Graduate Assistance Program, provides students with the opportunity to receive extra help on material that they are struggling with, earn online credits or retake a test that they failed. Teachers and parents can recommend students attend the program and Rinkes also can require them to do so.

“We expect about 160 of the 200 members of the 2012 Youth Choir to be with us for the weekend,” said Snyder.

“When you consider that some members are now attending college in other states, some are committed to other school functions, and others have work or family obligations that weekend, it’s remarkable that 80% of the singers are able to rearrange their schedules to be together.”

Each year, the Youth Choir works to develop a theme, not only in the selection of music, but also in the living experience at the State Fair.

“2012 marked the 50th year the All-Ohio Youth Choir performed at the Ohio State Fair,” said Snyder. “When I was considering a theme for the summer, ‘Keep the Dream Alive!’ seemed fitting. In addition to celebrating the choir’s anniversary, the theme is also a salute to America, as well as a plea to keep the arts alive in our schools.”

polished, and performed 71 songs in 106 performances over the 12 days of the State Fair this past summer.

“It was a record number of songs for the choir, and we believe it was also a record number of fair performances for the group,” he said. “I have programmed 32 of those songs for this concert on Feb. 17. The Coshocton Community Choir, who is sponsoring the event, will join the Youth Choir for another six songs in the concert finale.”

There will be something for every listener: folk songs, sacred songs and spirituals, patriotic songs, pieces from musical theatre, and four songs separately featuring the women and men of the choir.

“Carly Simon’s ‘Let the River Run’ was one of the favorites of the singers and our audiences,” said Snyder. “Other audience favorites will include ‘Mister Sandman,’ ‘Turn Around, Look at Me,’ Michael W. Smith’s ‘Friends,’ and the choir’s signature song, ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’.”

Local singers Emma Brems, Liz Kittner, Alex Lawrence, and Nathan Shutt will be featured soloists. Coshocton County native Sarah Porteus Baker has arranged ‘Together, Wherever We Go’ and several other songs that will be included in the concert.

The Youth Choir will also be singing for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 worship service at The Coshocton Presbyterian Church, located at 142 North Fourth St. A Youth Choir ensemble will sing at the 8 a.m. mass that day at Sacred Heart Church, 805 Main St. Guests are welcome to attend either service.

these are affected by changes in the environment.

These two research studies occupy about 50 percent of the 420-plus acres and are the two most important for the state of Ohio, according to a representative from Ohio State University.

Another research project conducted by Ohio State on county land is the study of water run-off from cutting timber. Ohio State is also planting and harvesting seeds from their canine fir tree project. Seeds are harvested by a third party every few years. Some seeds are replanted while others are sold to a company who then distributes them to tree farms. The income made from selling these seeds goes directly back into the program.

Representatives from the university explained that they conducted these experiments because they affect the state of Ohio and society.

The 600-acre federal land is still going through environmental assessment and will hopefully be completed this spring.

The commissioners had two main concerns with changes that were originally made to the lease they sent to USDA: hunting and future drilling. The USDA asked in their revised lease that no hunting and no future drilling for gas or oil be allowed on the land because they are concerned about liability. The commissioners stated that these 420-plus acres bring in a lot of money for the county with hunting licenses at $25 per acre. If people can no longer hunt on the land, the commissioners say the USDA should pay the hunting fee for each acre as part of their lease.

The USDA is concerned that if there is future drilling on the land, it could affect their projects. However, the commissioners argue that the county owns this land and that future drilling for oil or gas could produce a lot of money for the county.

The commissioners decided to re-write their lease agreement and present the revision to the USDA and go from there.

Dog tags were also discussed at the meeting.

COSHOCTON - The Commissioners met for their bi-weekly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6 to discuss a lease agreement between Coshocton County and Ohio State University. County and federal land is currently being used in Coshocton County by Ohio State University for several of their ongoing projects.

When the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was presented with the lease by the county commissioners, their lease was returned to them with parts of the lease removed and changed. The commissioners decided to meet with Ohio State representatives personally to have a face-to-face conversation and try to come to an agreement.

These 420-plus acres of county land are being used for multiple programs including beef/cattle production and grazing experiments.

Hay is also being harvested from this land to feed the cattle. Ohio State is also researching corn cropping systems and sustainability. This research focuses on production factors and how

The CVB also recently attended the AAA Great Vacations Travel Expo in Columbus.

“Coshocton County was well represented and made a big impact this year with three attractive booths all set up together,” said Myers. “Raven’s Glenn Winery had their booth right next to ours where they were promoting not only their winery, but all five wineries along Coshocton’s Three Rivers Wine Trail. Roscoe Village and the CVB shared a double booth next to Raven’s Glenn.

Lainie had designed a huge, gorgeous banner as our backdrop. We had beautiful ‘wood-like’ laminate flooring from Fisher Decorating, and we tied it all together with red, white, and blue décor from Annin & Co. It was exciting to work together as a team to share information and brochures about all Coshocton County has to offer.”

Another major current project of the Coshocton Visitors Bureau is the production of their new Visitor Guide. “This is the third year the CVB has created a magazine style brochure that showcases the lodging, attractions, dining, shopping, and outdoor offerings in Coshocton,” said Myers. “We distribute those guides

COSHOCTON - Even though first quarter is not the busy tourism season in Coshocton, now is the time to prepare for the 2013 season. Jan Myers, director of the Coshocton Visitors Bureau (CVB), says the office has been doing just that.

“We are a small office of just me and Lainie Brillhart, Communications and Marketing Coordinator,” said Myers. “We have been busy so far this year attending travel shows, working on our new visitor guide, redesigning our website, gathering new photos of local attractions and lodging, and promoting upcoming events for 2013.”

Myers, who just completed her first year as CVB Director, says she is especially excited about the partnerships that have developed in that time.

“We began holding regular Coshocton Tourism Industry Partner meetings in 2012,” she said. “We meet at various attractions in the county to discuss marketing ideas and form relationships that have led to tourism packages we can use to bring in more visitors. As an example, the Sweetheart Big Band Dance and the Chocolate Extravaganza events on Feb. 9 have partnered with Coshocton Village Inn & Suites to create a great getaway package for us

things that people here in Coshocton make and don’t think anything of it. They just volunteer and bring it in.” Mary Lou said she had been eyeing “The peanut butter chocolate fudge, Scotcharoos I think.” The item was made and donated by Sherrie Wiandt of Coshocton. Mary Lou said, “I’m looking forward to a large crowd today.

This is such a good project for the Pomerene (Center for the Arts). I enjoy this because it’s a way to get out in the community and do things.

I also belong to the Pink Ladies and you just do what you can.”

Kevin McClain, who attends the event annually with his wife Tammy, said he enjoys the treats. “I had the cappuccino cake, the mocha chocolate cheesecake and a red devils food cupcake. It’s all good. I love the event; you can get your chocolate craving filled plus its community. You meet and see people that you haven’t seen for a while and talk to friends and neighbors, that’s a great part of it. We come every year.”

COSHOCTON - Kiefer’s Florist in Roscoe Village has been providing professional floral arrangements to their customers for 100 years.

The business, started by Andrew Kiefer when he was 36 years old, has been handed down through three generations.

“He was a glassblower by trade,” Ed Kiefer, owner of Kiefer’s Florist, said about his grandfather, “Dad said they had gone to a convention. They took a trip and were looking at machine-made glass bottles. He saw those perfect bottles coming off the assembly line, and saw the writing on the wall that his job wasn’t there. He liked growing and liked the greenhouse, and decided to make it a business.”

Thus, Kiefer’s Florist was born and Andrew ran the business out of his house for a while at 1521 Walnut St. until the business was built at 410 S. 15th St. “Part of the reason he started was there

were only two other greenhouses in town and then eventually, one closed,” said Kiefer. “There was a good market for it.”

Andrew used to grow a lot of fresh-cut flowers in his 1500 square foot greenhouse and also grew a lot of specialty items, such as sweet peas and calla lilies.

Kiefer believes his grandfather built his greenhouse in 1912.

“The earliest invoice found was in 1913,” said Kiefer, “but I found invoices from 1912 from Coshocton Lumber. That’s probably when grandpa was building his first greenhouse.”

Kiefer was eight years old when his grandfather passed away.

“When I first started, I still had customers that had dealt with my grandfather,” said Kiefer.

“That made a really unique connection. I do remember him in his greenhouse. When I heard stories customers told, it was really neat. It made a difference on how I viewed the business.”

When Kiefer returned from college, he took care of the shop and retail aspect of the business while his dad cared for the greenhouse.

“It formed a great partnership,” said Kiefer.

“Everything I did, I always got his opinion. My parents were always supporters of everything I did.”

Kiefer’s Florist moved from being near the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital to its current location in Roscoe Village in January 2011 and is now looking at some exciting new products.

“With the economy, it speaks well if you can maintain your day-to-day business,” said Kiefer.

“We’re looking into some new product lines we’re going to be developing. If we can get this off the ground, it’s going to be really exciting.”

They are also offering something special for their 100th anniversary. Kiefer’s is offering a

The Feb. 5 celebration, attended by about 27 people, included a skit performed by Shutt and Custer, activity sheets, craft time, “piggie cakes” for a snack and the game Piggie Says if time allowed for it.

“It’s a pretty cute party and I’m glad they had crafts for us to do,” Michelle said.

COSHOCTON – Gavin Bassett couldn’t wait to get home to play with the paper bag puppets he made at the Coshocton Public Library.

Once his puppets were complete he used them to act out Mo Willems’ book called, “There Is a Bird On Your Head.”

Gavin and his mom Michelle Bassett made the elephant and pig puppets at the library’s Feb. 5 Elephant and Piggie Party, which was held to celebrate the characters created by author Mo Willems.

“His books are funny and entertaining,” said Cyndi Shutt children’s librarian assistant.

Breakfast Bowl. The Mentoring Center for Coshocton will be having a breakfast bowl on Friday, Feb. 15 from 6:30 – 9 a.m. at the Mentoring Center for Coshocton, located above Golden’s Clothing. Enter through the first set of glass doors and take the elevator to the second floor. Start the day off right with eggs, sausage gravy, breakfast potatoes, and a variety of breakfast casseroles, or oatmeal with a wide selection of fruit and nut toppings. Coffee, hot tea, juice, and milk will be provided. There is a requested donation of $5 with all proceeds going to support the Mentoring Center’s Bowling for Kids Team. Soup Supper. Precious Treasures Child Care Center, located at the West Lafayette United Methodist Church, will be having their third annual soup supper Friday, Feb. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. The meal includes chili, broccoli cheese, or potato soup, shredded chicken, sloppy joe, or hot hogs, a drink, and dessert. The cost for adults is $7 and $4 for children 12 years and under. There will also be a silent auction and an art auction with artwork by Precious Treasures children. This is a fundraising event to help support the daycare.

All-Ohio Youth Choir. The All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir will be returning for their annual reunion concert in Coshocton on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. and will be joined in their grand finale by the Coshocton Community Choir, both under direction of Mr. Charles R. Snyder. The 200-voice All-Ohio Youth Choir is composed of high school singers throughout Ohio who perform at the Ohio State Fair each year. They will be singing some of their favorite selections from the 2012 Fair at this reunion concert. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and are available at the door or at CoshoctonCommunityChoir.org. The concert will be in the McKinley Auditorium at the Coshocton High School located at 1205 Cambridge Rd. Upcoming Cooking Classes. The Village Pantry will continue hosting cooking classes in 2013. Each class is $10 per person and RSVP is required. All classes will be at the Village Pantry located at 318 N. Whitewoman St. in Roscoe Village. Classes will include: Feb. 18: “One-Dish Wonders” at 6:30 p.m. taught

by Jen Wilson; March 7: “Luck of the Irish” at 6:30 p.m. taught by Jen Wilson; and March 18: “Let’s Talk Italian” at 6:30 p.m. taught by Bob McKenna. Call to make reservations at 575-4049. Class size is limited.

Class on Autism. Celia Oliver, PhD, PsyD, will be speaking on working more effectively with autism disorders March 7 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Frontier Power Community Room. Exhibitors for Home & Lifestyle Show. Exhibitors are now being accepted for the 2013 Coshocton Home & Lifestyle Show to be March 9 and 10. The Show benefits Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton County and is in its fourth year. The successful show annually draws approximately 45 exhibitors and 1,000 visitors. Focusing on all things relating to the home, its contents, and its care, the show is at the Coshocton County Career Center. Parking is free and there is no admission charge for attending. Bluegrass Music. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music and Relay for Life Team Alana presents Bluegrass Music each Saturday night at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites, located at 115 N. Water St. Admission is $5 per person; no charge for children 12 and under. Max Hardesty’s One Man Band plays from 6 – 6:45 p.m.

Turf Management Class. On Feb. 26 at 6 p.m., Central Farm of Wooster, Ohio will contact their annual Turf Management class at Auer ACE Hardware beginning at 6 p.m. All Little League, SOCCA, City and County Recreation Directors and School field maintenance personnel are invited to learn more about fertilizers, diamond dry, mound clay and other methods to enhance playing fields. Board of Park Meetings. The Board of Park Commissioners of the Coshocton Park District is announcing a change to their meeting schedule for February.

Meetings will be Feb. 27. The meeting normally scheduled for Feb. 13 has been canceled.

Pancake Breakfast. Riverside Towers (Highrise) is having a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser for their Senior Residents Association on Saturday, March 16 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Community Room at 85 Pine St., Coshocton. Breakfast includes: pancakes, eggs, sausage or ham, breakfast muffin, coffee, juice and milk. A donation of $6 for adults and $3 for children.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle. As this is their main fundraiser for the year, their current sponsors are Jerry’s Family Restaurant, Coshocton Health and Rehabilitation Center, Autumn Healthcare, Interim Home Health Care, Baker’s Foods, Buehler’s, McDonald’s, and Domino’s Pizza.

Flu Shots. The Coshocton City Health Department at 400 Brown Lane will have flu clinics every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m. now by appointment only. There is no cost for clients with Medicare and Medicaid coverage. For all other clients, the cost is $20.

Volunteers Needed. Second Chance Homeless Shelter is currently accepting volunteer applications for part-time Resident Advisor positions. The volunteer Resident Advisor helps to provide a positive emotional and social living environment for residents of the shelter. Board of Health meeting. The regular meetings for the Coshocton County Board of Health will now be the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. in the County Services Building.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The Coshocton Senior Center is a distribution site for free monthly groceries for low income senior citizens (age 60 and over) living in Coshocton County. To be eligible, your monthly income cannot exceed $1,211 for one person in the household. Add $429 for each additional household member. You can apply for the program at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Brown’s Lane, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 622-4852.

HEAP Assistance. Applications are available at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Brown’s Lane, for the Home Energy Assistance Program. HEAP is a

federally funded program designed to help eligible Ohioans meet their winter heating costs. Assistance is available at the Center or for those unable to stop in, an in-home visit can be scheduled. Please call the Center at 622-4852 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment.

School Hotline. Help keep Coshocton City Schools safe with the new Coshocton City School District School Hotline. Just call 1-866-484-4634 to report threats of violence, fighting, bullying, theft, child abuse, gang activity, cheating, vandalism, and alcohol use. You do not have to identify yourself and your phone number is not recorded.

Church Events Family Fun Night. Isleta UMC will be having a Family Fun Night on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. There will also be a pizza, chips, beverages, and family activities planned. The public is invited. For more information, contact Bev Darr at (740) 492-0606.

Back Door Café. Bakersville Presbyterian Church will have an all-you-can-eat menu of pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and drinks at their Back Door Café on Feb. 21, and March 21 from 7:30 – 11 a.m. A $5 donation will be appreciated to continue their community outreach programs. Sweet rolls will also be available for sale.

Cross Training. Every Wednesday in February, there is Cross Training at Grace United Methodist Church, 422 Walnut Street. Cross Training is a midweek time when persons of all ages can share in a family-style meal and small group experiences. The evening includes supper served at 5:30 p.m., Bible Study, gym time, crafts and music for preschoolers through high school children and youth, a knitting class taught by Brandi Tilton, and an Adult Bible Study led by Judge Fenn Pierce on Adam Hamilton’s book, “The Way”, walking in the footsteps of Jesus. Also on Wednesdays at the church, a quilting class is taught by Helen Moody at 2 p.m. Beginners are welcome. A hearing impaired small group and sign class gathers at 4 p.m. led by Carol Pierce.

Beth Moore Classes. Beth Moore Classes meet Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 422 Walnut Street. All are welcome to join in the newest of Beth’s Bible Studies, “Law of Love”. These lessons delve into the book of Deuteronomy.

Calling all Kids!. Coshocton Baptist Church and the Coshocton McDonald’s are teaming up to share information about the Ronald McDonald House in Akron.

Kids in preschool through 8th grade are invited to join their AWANA clubs. Meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 8 p.m. at the Coshocton Baptist Church on Denman Avenue. Jacob’s Closet. During February, the Closet will be open only the last Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. – noon and 5 – 8 p.m. At this time, they are asking only for winter clothes to be donated weekdays from 9 a.m. – noon.

Pancake Day. Boy Scout Troop 403 will be having a pancake day March 9 from 3 – 7 p.m. and March 10 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart to cover the costs of camping. Cost for adults is $5 and children age 4 – 12 are $3. There is no charge for children three years old and under. The menu will include pancakes, sausage, syrup, and drinks, and orders can be made to go. Raffles and door prizes will be awarded.

Church Service. The Church of God located at 703 S 2nd St would like to invite everyone to service on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. For those who would like to come but can’t drive themselves, they can pick you up in their new church van. Community Dinner. The Central Christian Church at 731 Main Street has a community dinner on the fifth Wednesday in months that have five Wednesdays.

The dinner is served in the fellowship hall from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Bible Study. Home of Christ has bible study each Wednesday and Thursday night at 7 p.m. It is located at 139 Bridge St in Coshocton.

Clubs and Organizations PERI Meeting. Public Employee Retiree’s Chapter 77 (PERI) will meet Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Brown’s Lane. The meal will be at Noon. Plant Sale. Coshocton County Master Gardener Volunteers Annual Plant Sale will be Saturday, June 1 from 8:30 a.m. – Noon in the Rotary Pavilion at the County Fairgrounds. Demonstrations start at 8:30 a.m. and the plant sale begins at 9 a.m. Bring a garden question to be answered by a Master Gardener volunteer. Plant sales will include annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetables. Proceeds will go toward public gardens, workshops, and educational materials.

Cloud Climbers. The Cloud Climbers R.C. club will be having their monthly meeting the first Tuesday of the month at Jerry’s Restrant at 7 p.m. Dues for the 2013 are now due. The first Dunk for a Cure was held in honor of Greg Yurjevic who had just been diagnosed with cancer.

“The first year he came to the game in a wheelchair and last year he was well enough to shoot during halftime,” Prince said.

Even after Yurjevic won his battle with cancer, Prince felt it was important to continue Dunk for a Cure.

CHAMPIONS! Thomas Wright, 12-years-old, is pictured accepting his $25 gift certificate from Chili Crossroads Pastor Neal Dearyan after winning the junior atomic wings contest at the third annual Tri-County Wing Contest & Wild Game Dinner held Sunday evening, Feb. 10, at Chili Crossroads Bible Church. Wright, who is a sixth grader at Keene Elementary downed nine wings to claim the championship – “They were really spicy,” Wright said, “I was really excited when I found out I won the contest.” This was his first attempt at the contest. “I wanted to stop at number five,” he said. Asked how he pushed through to consume nine wings, he said, “I really wanted to win. They had a hot barbecue taste. I would do it again.” Mike Bechtol also held on to his title as the adult atomic wings contest champion, consuming 22 of the hot wings. The event also included wild game dishes, a live taxidermy demonstration, bounce house, junior and adult atomic wings eating contest for the kids and an inspirational message by Pastor Neal Dearyan.

CHEER The Coshocton High School Varsity Cheerleaders attended the Hopewell Indians Basketball game Wednesday, Feb. 6 and cheered with the Hopewell Indian Cheerleaders. They arrived an hour prior to the game starting and practiced with the cheerleaders. They shared some cheers with each other and prepared for the game. What a wonderful experience this was for both squads.
