BY JOSIE SELLERS beginning demolition Nov. 1.” They also had to wait two months for a report from forensic engineers who were from Texas and visited the facility three times. The forensic engineers were able to prove that the 2014 explosion was an accident and that regular maintenance was being done by employees. There was no negligence on anyone’s part. “We felt pretty sure of that and to have it confirmed was a big relief,” said Ron Warnock, elevator superintendent. OSHA did give the Grain Co. three citations and fined it $11,000, but since they weren’t at fault for the explosion they are contesting the charges. The rebuilding process is still scheduled to start in April. “We had a bid meeting on Jan. 23 and four contractors came,” Crown said. “Quotes are due Feb. 13 and in a week or two we will know who the builder will be.” The builders will be able to work while demolition is still going on. “One will not interfere with the other,” Warnock said. The Grain Co. is planning on dumping grain on or before Oct. 1. “Our objective is to use this unfortunate incident to make our facility more efficient in how we handle grain and move customers through the line,” Crown said. “We will be adding an additional pit, changing the rail load out location so it doesn’t interfere with truck traffic, adding a second scale and a small hopper tank for those folks who buy grain from us.” She has been very appreciative of the customers continued support during this whole ordeal. “Our employees are looking forward to serving them again this fall,” Crown said. Their way of doing that was organizing the school’s first winter homecoming. The new tradition included a pep rally, which was unfortunately canceled due to weather, a dance and the selection of a homecoming king. Cameron Wiandt, who is a senior and a member of National Honor Society, had the pleasure of being crowned homecoming king. COSHOCTON – This year’s snow fall has kept members of Coshocton High School’s National Honor Society busy. The group needed to do a community service project and decided it would help senior citizens keep their sidewalks and driveways clear of snow. “It’s something that doesn’t take a lot of time and is a way for us to help others and not just ourselves,” said Raven Shannon. Once they decided on the project, NHS Advisor Sheri McClurg contacted the Coshocton County Senior Center to see if it could help them find people who needed help. “I gave them a list of about 20 seniors who are in their late 80s and early 90s,” said Christy Neighbor from the senior center. “Some of them could be stuck at home for days when it snowed so this was an answer to prayers.” McClurg shared the list with the NHS members and they signed up for senior citizens to contact when it snowed. “I really want the kids to connect with older members of our community and for the senior citizens to get to know them as well,” she said. “The kids have really responded to the project and I think the senior citizens get a kick out of them showing up.” Ashley Fulks has enjoyed working on the project. “It’s been crazy awesome and fun,” she said. There are 23 seniors in the National Honor Society and they each have to complete at least five service hours a month. “This has been a good way to spend our time,” said Jacqueline Roman, who is the president of National Honor Society. “Of all the groups I’m involved in, I think this is the one that has done the most work and had the largest

After five years of annual week-long sessions at the First Presbyterian Church, the Buckeye Workshop closed its doors for good. More than 90 visitors to the county had participated in the event, some coming all the way from Georgia. The theme this year was “Learning to Live Through Work and Leisure” and each day, activities and sessions were conducted from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The workshop was designed to benefit everyone from teenagers to grandparents interested in recreational leadership. Most attendees returned year after year to share and add to their knowledge to improve their skills. Instructors taught in a variety of subjects including camp counselling, song leading, games and party planning, how to teach crafts, and much more. Mrs. Leech had contributed a lifetime of service to the Coshocton community. Recently, she had been honored with a luncheon as a 50-year member of the Coshocton Historical Club. She served as the club’s chief executive from 1928 – 1930 and again from 1949 – 1951. She had also been named the first director of music in Coshocton County while teaching in Warsaw. She taught music, violin, piano, and organ, but had to stop when her health started to decline. However, she still remembers traveling by horse and buggy to teach music in children’s homes. In addition, she was the first president on the board of directors at the YWCA and one of five life-time members of the Salvation Army. She also served 17 years on the City Health Board.

Young’s IGA Foodliner opened on Main and Water Streets that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with Mr. Robert H. Young personally greeting each new customer, along with Indians pitcher Mike Garcia. Hundreds of dollars of prizes were to be awarded throughout the week and free Coca-Cola, coffee and donuts were given to all patrons. The grocery store employed 35 local people and boasted a large meat department, fast service at check-out, and a lunch counter. The location also offered customers a large black-topped parking area that could accommodate 150 automobiles. The building itself was 60 feet wide by 130 feet long and was done in ivory and blue, IGA’s official colors. Robert and his father, Dr. H.C. Young have owned and operated Young’s IGA Foodliner in Wooster since 1952.

COSHOCTON - The local skills contest for junior and senior cosmetology students at the Coshocton County Career Center was held on Feb. 9. Judges for the event were Stephanie Sharrock (manager) from Great Clips and Kim Roof, owner of Scissor Shack; both of the judges are alumni of the Career Center. The scope of the contest consisted of haircutting, blow drying, sketching a design, plus creating a modern up style, which incorporated three different techniques. Contest points were averaged together, and six winners were chosen from the program. The highest overall winner, Elizabeth White, will represent the Career Center on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the regional skills contest that will be hosted by Tri-County Career Center in Nelsonville. Students have the opportunity to compete at a local, state and national level. Nationals will be held in Louisville, Ky. this year. In preparation for the contest, students were trained in haircutting, thermal styling and practiced formal evening designs. Competitions allow students personal growth and many opportunities for advancement. Donations were received from the following companies: Marianna, Great Clips, Scissor Shack, and Backscratchers, who is located in California and awarded to the six individuals with the best designs. Junior winners were: Elizabeth White – first place; Alexis Zimmerman – second place; Kathrn Chittum, third place. Senior winners were: Quyhn Do, first place; Randi Sampsel – second place; Jessica Sivik – third place.

CHOCOLATE Approximately 70 bakers gathered at the Coshocton County Career Center on Saturday, Feb. 14 with their finest chocolate creations ready to serve. Despite the snowy weather and the cold, the 23rd annual Chocolate Extravaganza was a success as residents lined up with trays anticipating celebrating Valentine’s Day with the delicious taste of chocolate. The Chocolate Extravaganza has become a traditional community event for many residents, and money goes to benefit the Pomerene Center. “We can’t do anything without being able to fund it,” said Anne Cornell, director of the Pomerene Center. “This helps get the word out about who we are and what we do.” In addition to the chocolate, Samantha Servais and Donovan Rice provided musical entertainment. PRESENTATION Shiloh Baptist Church recently hosted the first of three programs designed to bring people together to discuss cultural history and relationships in humanity. The Feb. 10 event featured the viewing of the History Channel’s “Voices of Civil Rights” documentary and the chance to play the game Table of Humanity. The game was created by Shiloh’s pastor Rev. Cliff N. Biggers and his late son Aaron Brown. The documentary gave those in attendance the opportunity to hear stories from people who actually lived through the civil rights movement and how there appeared to be two Americas – one for whites and one for blacks. “We’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go,” Biggers said. “We all have to not give up on building relationships. Race is only what we are not who we are.” He will be conducting two more race relation presentations from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17 and 24, at Shiloh, which is located at 404 S. Seventh St. Those interested in the presentation should RSVP at 622-3632 and leave your name and contact information. Seating is limited. Refreshments will be provided. BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS

AUCTION Craig Casey, who was the successful bidder representing an undisclosed third party, watches the auction process at the site of the former Central Elementary School in Coshocton on Saturday morning, Feb. 14. The high bid was $200,000 and needs to be approved before being made official at the Tuesday evening, Feb. 17 Coshocton City Schools board meeting. Jim Nelson of Century 21 Court Square Realty was the auctioneer. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE
COSHOCTON - Despite bitter cold and near blizzard like conditions, several brave souls attended the Coshocton schools’ property auction at the site of the former Central and Lincoln elementary buildings. A spirited bidding process took the Central lot and associated parking lots to the $200,000 level, with Craig Casey, representing an unidentified third party, being the high bidder. None of the bids are official until the Coshocton City Schools Board approves the sale – probably at the Tuesday evening, Feb. 17 meeting – which will be at 4:45 p.m. Jim Nelson, with Century 21 Court Square Realty, was the auctioneer. Each tract was offered as a separate parcel with that total being $72,000. With the high bid being $200,000, that bid becomes the successful bid upon approval. Nelson gave those in attendance a clear and concise description of each parcel and explained that the basement walls and all associated elements of the former school were hauled away – giving someone a clean lot to work with, including access to city water, sewer and even high capacity electric. The Lincoln Elementary School lot auction was a bit more challenging for Nelson, who wanted to start the bidding at $50,000 and started at $30,000 before finishing at $40,000 with Joe Weaver securing the high bid for Weaver Construction. There were several interested

COSHOCTON - The annual COTC Coshocton Campus Advisory Board meeting was held on Thursday, Feb. 12 in the boardroom of the Coshocton campus located in Roscoe Village. New board members were introduced and Jan Myers took the reins as chair from outgoing chair, Heather Rainwater. Dr. Bonnie L. Coe, President of COTC, gave members an update on COTC and the Coshocton campus. Of special significance was that the COTC nursing program has met all six standards of the nursing accreditation for a two year college. Brad Pulcini, Director of Gateway Operations for COTC, reported on enrollment and that two year college enrollment is down around the state due in part to a declining student population in the demographic that typically attends a college like COTC. However, COTC is pleased that they have exceeded their dual enrollment goals. John McDonald, building supervisor for

the campus, received applause for the outstanding appearance of the campus and for ensuring that the campus has stayed open despite poor weather this winter. Howard Imhof, Director of ITS and Alice HutzelBateson, Director of Marketing & Public Relations for COTC, provided the board with a presentation of the new responsive design website that launched in November. The website is fully functional on all smart phones, tablets and devices and board members were given the opportunity to experience browsing the site on multiple devices. Chris Reed was pointed out as playing a key role in the development of the website over the nine month period it took to develop. Dr. Coe said, “We are so privileged to have Ann Simpson coming on to the board. Ann and her family have been tremendously supportive of the college through the years, and more specifically the Coshocton Campus. We also rotate each of the superintendents and this year Rick Raach, the superintendent at the Career Center, is serving on the board.” “We are also grateful to Heather Rainwater for serving as our chair this past year.” “I think that people are aware that the past

few years have been difficult in higher education with enrollment. Many colleges and universities and two year colleges have instituted different cost cutting strategies. Our college has four full service higher learning commissioned campuses and we are absolutely committed to those campuses so rather than backing off, the past couple of years – in Coshocton specifically we have really stepped up our engagement in the community and our involvement. Our commitment is just solid in each and every one of our communities.” Howard Imhof talked about the investment on a new external website, “We looked at this as an investment. We knew the value of such an effort and what it would bring to the campus and communities we serve particularly for prospective students. That was the main focus. We knew no matter what it was going to take, it would be worth it. It’s really about who we are and the commitment we have moving forward. We are excited about it – there were over 40 people involved across the college. It was going to be an 11 month project but we got it done in nine. It was a huge effort and one of things I can say about COTC is that all of the various areas of the institution it’s amazing how they come together teamwork wise and they’re willing to give you the time to pull off something like this.” You can experience the new website at www. cotc.edu. OPEN HOUSE The Coshocton County Career Center was packed with community members, alumni and perspective students Thursday evening Feb. 12. The school opened its doors to the public for its annual open house, which gave people the opportunity to tour the school and visit booths set up by various businesses and organizations from the area. “I like the different variety of people you meet at the open house,” said Quynh Do, a senior in the cosmetology program. “I hope this teaches people what we do, encourages students to come here and the community to vote for our levy.” Rachel Wright, another senior in the program, also was looking forward to the event. “I hope they see how serious we are about what we do and that we have a passion for it,” she said.
