She also had two other great-grandchildren competing in the event, which was held Saturday, March 14, at the West Lafayette First Baptist Church. Ninety to 100 area youth participated in the event. “We did this last year ourselves, but wanted to open it up to other young people this year,” said Mary Mansfield. Awana groups from Calvary Baptist Church and Chili Crossroads Church also were invited to test their cars on the electronic track supplied by Awana Missionary Jeff Ruff. Trophies were awarded for the best design and fastest car. “Some of these cars are really fast,” said Richard Holbert, who was helping at the starting line. “They’ve come a long way since I was a kid.” BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS

Chamber to have 33rd annual online auction

BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – The 33rd annual Chamber Auction begins Friday, March 20 at 9 a.m. This year, the auction boasts more than 200 items donated from local businesses with a total market value of more than $14,000. There’s something for everyone of all ages including a wide variety of gift certificates for overnight stays, massages, a three-person airplane ride, and even eye exams, and many more. Gift baskets are sure to be popular items with baskets filled with chocolate, wines, and cheeses. Or, pamper your pet with a gift basket filled with dog grooming items. To participate, log on to coshoctonchamber.com and click on the auction button. There, you can view each item up for bid, the latest bid received, and the market value of the item. All bidders must register through Peddicord Rice Auction Realty and receive a bid number. Bidders in years past who have already registered do not need to register again. There is no set dollar amount on a starting bid. Bidders may start their bid at $1 or above. Once other bids have been received on an item, other bidders on that item will receive a notification letting them know that they have been out-bid. “It gets to be very competitive and fun,” said Amy Stockdale, Coshocton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. “It’s a great way for businesses to highlight their business and the money we raise goes right back to marketing our businesses.” Once the auction closes on March 28 at noon, the winning bidder will receive a notification. Items can be picked up the following week at the Chamber office, which is located at Central Ohio Technical College at 200 N. Whitewoman St. Cash or check will be accepted as a form of payment. No credit or debit cards, please. “It’s a fun way to support your Chamber of Commerce which supports your community,” said Stockdale. “And, you get something in return.” If you want to see these items in person before you bid, stop by the Chamber office during normal business hours to view the items. Business hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stockdale would like to thank all of the volunteers who have put in hours making phone calls to local businesses asking for donations and picking up donations for the Chamber. “We have a great volunteer team,” said Stockdale. “They are the ones who go out and do all the field work. They do a fabulous job. I couldn’t do it without them” Corporate sponsors for the Chamber auction are: Peddicord Rice Auction Realty, Interim Health Care, MFM, Central Realty, COTC, Lity’s Scrap Yard, Century National Bank, and Jones Metal. MARCH 22ND, 1965 Nearly 2,000 Coshoctonians turned out at the Coshocton High School gymnasium to welcome home and pay tribute to the Coshocton Redskins basketball team who had the best season in the history of the school. School had been dismissed early the previous Friday so that the student body could see the team off to Columbus as they battled Eastmoor for the Class AA Regionals. However, they were defeated during double overtime with a score of 78-74. A caravan of about 400 cars met the team outside of Coshocton to bring them back to town in victory, honking horns and shouting. The team had a 21-2 season. MARCH 23RD, 1975 Bears are Number One! At 4:31 p.m. when the final buzzer sounded, Coach Walt Harrop did his victory leap as the River View Black Bears captured the Class AA title in overtime against Dayton Stivers. The victory brought the first championship in a major sport to Coshocton County. The Black Bears, who lost only once that season to Maysville 70-69, completed the year with a 25-1, the best basketball record in the history of the county. Fans of River View, dressed mostly in farmer’s garb, cheered their boys on even as they trailed most of the fourth quarter. The game tied at 68 when the final buzzer sounded, which prompted overtime. The Bears gave it their all and pulled ahead in overtime to win the title. MARCH 23RD, 1985 Carolyn Hays tried life in the city when she went to Columbus and worked at Nationwide Insurance for 30 months. But her love of gardening and the outdoors brought her back to Coshocton to work with the soil that continued a Hays family tradition for a fifth generation in the county. She said as soon as she interviewed with Frances Montgomery of Roscoe Village, she knew she wanted to work for her and accepted a position as a gardener, working her way up to director of the landscape department in the village. She said she is in charge of maintenance and everything that grows in the renovated district. She dreamed of starting more gardens in Roscoe and doing more educational work. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

COSHOCTON - The final community conversation gathering was held March 12, at the Frontier Power Community Room. United Way of Coshocton County hosted six of these programs and Ohio State University Extension officials facilitated them. The first five were by invitation only and the sixth one was open to the general public. Those who attended participated in a SWOT analysis for the community. Attendees were asked to come up with strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for the city and county. Some of the strengths brought up were the

BY JOSIE SELLERS area’s natural resources, rich history, a strong faith base and accessible government leaders. A few weaknesses mentioned were brain drain, lack of collaboration amongst groups, generational poverty and few good paying jobs. Opportunities available to the community included recreation options for all ages, the ability to market Coshocton as a destination for activities like hunting and getting the young, educated people who do stay here to get involved. Threats mentioned were competition for industries from neighboring counties, lack of parental involvement, being a passive community and declining funding from state and federal organizations. Notes from the different meetings will be compiled electronically and common themes will be looked for. “We will find two to three things that you can act upon,” said Cindy Bond, from Cambridge’s OSU Extension office. Bond has done these community conversations with several other counties and helped Emily Adams from Coshocton’s OSU Extension office lead the process locally. “If the themes we find match with United Way’s mission they will take action on them,” Adams said. “If not there will be other committees formed or groups selected to start a grassroots, homegrown movement. We want the community to take ownership of these issues.” A final copy of the report compiling information from all the conversations will be e-mailed to everyone involved in them. “This is not the end,” Adams said. “We are going to find the big themes and get folks invested in making this a better community.” Bond said the successful use of this information lies with those who get involved. “This process is people and leadership driven,” Bond said. “It’s up to the community about what they want to do, but most start with small changes and go from there.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Christians Relay For Life team will hold a craft show fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 285 W. National Drive in Newark. There will be about 15 vendors, a bake sale and raffles. Some of the vendors attending are: Jamberry, It Works, Gold Canyon Candle, Princess Photography, Origami Owl, Splashy Bath Bombs, Tupperware, Your Inspiration at Home and many homemade crafts as well. Some of the raffle items include: Ohio State, Lacey Meat, Old Village Meats, Cleveland Browns, Pink Zebra, the Genes Bakery, Still Harmonies, Black Dilaha Dog and a couple items from each vendor. Baked good already lined up are: Cupcakes, sugar cookies, chocolate covered strawberries and hard tack candy. Organizer, Jessica Paynter is still accepting donations for the event and people can call 740221-4209 to have her pick them up. “The reason I relay and advocate for the cause as much as I do is because Relay for Life has always been a big part of my life since I was working at the nursing home and as a student at River View High School,” she said. “In 2007 one of the greatest inspirations in my life, a teacher, came to me and said Jess I have something to tell you I have cancer and I don’t know how much longer I am going to be your teacher. She was more than a teacher a friend, a lady that I knew was always there for me no matter what. Well later that year she beat the fight! She won! But then again I took her class my sophomore year and right before her birthday in February she calls me back into her office and I see the tears and no words were spoken. I knew. The cancer was back and there was nothing anyone could say or do.”

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON The teacher who inspired Paynter was Judy Dolick, who eventually became a patient at the nursing home she was working/volunteering her time at. “Seeing her lay in room 402 just lifeless is something I will never forget,” Paynter said. “The last Easter dinner the Dolicks ever had I made for them. I took it into the nursing home for her, her husband and her two kids (adults). Thursday April 10, 2008, a day I will never forget, I walked into the nursing home and saw Mrs. D for the last time. She gave me a hug and said Jess you can do anything you keep your mind onto. I will not make it to see the new computer lab, please take care of it for me. I didn’t think it was goodbye. I told her I loved her and that it wasn’t goodbye it was see you later. To this day I can’t look into room 402 nor can I look into the computer lab at school.” She was shocked when she found out Dolick passed away on Friday, April 11 of that year. “I didn’t know what to do other then Relay,” Paynter said.

BY JOSIE SELLERS COSHOCTON – Coshocton City Council was updated on several projects at its March 9 meeting. Mayor Steve Mercer informed council that the Autumn Greens nursing home project at the site of the former country club on Cambridge Road is continuing to move forward. Steve Hitchens, who is developing the project, met with the planning commission to change the boundaries of the project and relay out the nursing home. The planning commission unanimously accepted the change and it will be published for 30 days then brought back to council for a resolution. “When it’s done we will have a nice new 61 bed facility in the middle of town,” Mercer said. “This is an over five million dollar project that will add to our community and help with its resurgence. It’s also another reason for us to continue to have great expectations for this year.” Hitchens recently sold nursing homes he owns in 10 other cities and the mayor believes that company will also buy this new home and Hitchens will retain the property around it for possible condos. Columbia Gas is also making a two million dollar investment in the community to upgrade service lines in the Cambridge Road area. In a press release Columbia Gas shared with Service Director Jerry Stenner, it is explained that, “more than 23,000 feet of natural gas main line will be replaced in the area as Columbia upgrades existing steel pipe with a specially-designed plastic pipe.” Customers who will be impacted by this work will be notified by letter when an information meeting is scheduled for the project. There will be a short interruption of natural gas service and customers also will have indoor meters moved to the outside of their homes.” Stenner also briefly addressed the pothole issue in town. “The last few weeks have been awful on our city streets that were already in need of being repaired,” he said. “We are working on them and ask that you drive slow and avoid them where you can.” The city currently has plans to get the repaving project of 541 started this spring and Stenner said funds to do Otsego Avenue will be available in late summer. Sheriff Tim Rogers also took a turn addressing council. He informed them that the department’s K-9 Dingo is retiring and that council members were invited to his March 17 retirement party. “We’ve replaced him with a Dutch Shepherd and Deputy Stone has been going to Johnstown every day for the last month and half to train with her,” Rogers said. “She has aggressiveness to her when needed, but is gentle with children and groups like Dingo was.” Dingo will live his retirement years out with Stone. proceeds will benefit the Brems family. According to his obituary, “Robert “Bob” Brems Jr. died Jan. 15, in Columbus, at the age of 48 after suffering a traumatic brain injury as a result of sudden and unexplained cardiac arrest on Jan. 6. He left behind his wife, Mindy and children, Emma, Ellie and John.” “This is all for Mindy and the kids,” said Doug Speicher, who also is with the band. “We love that family and so does the community.” Bob touched the lives of many people through his jobs and volunteer work. In his obituary it states that, “At the time of his passing, Bob worked for Organic Technologies as a quality assurance engineer, was health commissioner for Coshocton County and an adjunct professor at Columbus State University.” He also was involved with Boy Scout Troop 406, was a Financial Peace University Leader, served the Coshocton Presbyterian Church in many ways, worked with Habitat for Humanity and supported many arts organizations. “It was never about Bob,” Speicher said. “He always wanted to know about you.” Bob was especially passionate about helping others through the Financial Peace University. “He was huge into helping teach people to get out of debt and take control of their lives,” Pendola said. Bob also was a very welcoming person. Pendola said his door was always open to kids in the neighborhood and he has fond memories of vacationing with the Brems. He also was known for getting the guys together for movie nights. “He was a selfless individual,” Pendola said. “He’d do what was necessary to get people together, but he humbly led. He was good at creating an environment that allowed others to shine.” Speicher described him as an encourager. “I’m sure years from now there are going to be kids saying they graduated from college because of Bob,” Pendola said. “Bob cared when no one else did.” He also was known for his love of Bon Jovi

The concert, however, is not a memorial service. “We are going to celebrate and party like Bob would have wanted us too,” Pendola said. “If any lesson can be taken from all this, it’s to live your life to the fullest, which Bob did. Don’t wait until tomorrow to do something.” The Jason Pendola Band is very thankful to River View for the use of its auditorium and to the following sponsors: Edward Jones Investments – Douglas Speicher, Webb Financial Group, LLC, Novelty Advertising, Bright Idea Technology Solutions, LLC, Jeff Drennen Dealerships, Baker’s IGA and Gemini Company. “Because of them we are able to give every penny from this concert to the family,” Pendola said. “We’ve all learned a lot from Bob at one time or another and want to come together as a community to wrap our arms around the Brems.” More on the benefit concert can be found on the The Jason Pendola Band Facebook and YouTube web pages. COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Visitors Bureau and the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce are hosting a meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, with guest speaker Melinda Huntley, the executive director of the Ohio Travel Association. Huntley will speak on the Power of Travel in Ohio and how it drives business, jobs and economic development, not only in tourism-related businesses, but to all businesses in a community. “When people hit the roads exploring Ohio, they spend money,” Huntley said. “In fact, the 193 million travelers through Ohio generate $38 billion in economic activity each year for Ohio communities and support more than 400,000 jobs.” (Visitors to Coshocton County alone generated over $50 million dollars in business sales directly and indirectly in 2013.) Huntley will share an up-close-and-personal look at the flow of the traveler dollar in our communities, and how a local economy that invests in travel and tourism as part of its economic development strategy can reap rewards. Tips will be provided on how to ensure that communities keep more of the traveler dollar. Huntley also will talk about travel-related jobs, including the results of a new workforce study conducted by the Ohio Travel Association. “I heard Melinda present the workforce study information recently,” said Jan Myers, director of the Coshocton Visitors Bureau. “I was very impressed with their findings and feel this information is so important for our local businesses and educators to hear. It’s applicable for not only tourism entities, but any business that has employees. Melinda will also share a concept of a tourism career path that might be interesting for high schools and colleges to explore.” Huntley joined the Ohio Travel Association (OTA) as executive director in September 2012 after more than 28 years in the travel industry. OTA a statewide industry association dedicated to making Ohio’s $38 billion tourism industry strong, smart, and prosperous. “I hope local businesses, front-line workers,

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON educators, and government officials will attend this open meeting where anyone is welcome,” said Myers. “We are fortunate to have Melinda coming to Coshocton to be with us and I know those who attend will find her information fascinating and applicable to their work and to what we are doing in Coshocton.” The meeting will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Central Ohio Technical College Coshocton Campus, 200 N. Whitewoman St. (Room 150). Those wishing to attend can contact Amy Stockdale, director of the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce 740622-5411, amystockdale@coshoctonchamber. com; or Jan Myers, director of the Coshocton Visitors Bureau 740-622-4877 or director@ visitcoshocton.com.

LUNCHEON The Honorable Bob Gibbs, (R), U.S. Representative, District 7, was one of the elected officials that spoke at the seventh annual legislative luncheon held at the Johnson Humrickhouse Museum on Friday, March 13. The event is hosted by the Coshocton County Port Authority. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE COSHOCTON - The seventh annual legislative luncheon, held at the Johnson Humrickhouse Museum on Friday, March 13, featured several elected officials and representatives speaking on behalf of others, including Tim Ross, the Eastern Ohio Regional Liaison office of Ohio Governor John R. Kasich. The event is hosted and coordinated by the Coshocton County Port Authority, with Dorothy Skowrunski, executive director, and Renee Hardesty, administrative assistant, receiving a round of applause for their efforts to bring together many of the elected officials that represent Coshocton County. A set of legislative priorities from the Port Authority, Coshocton County Commissioners and the City of Coshocton were highlighted by Skowrunski.

Rep. Gibbs talked about the waters of the U.S. bill, which would impact farmers and homeowners. The bill is from the EPA. Gibbs also talked about the federal budget and that only 30 percent of the budget is considered discretionary funding – meaning that any cuts to the budget would have to come from that 30 percent, which is federal agencies and the Department of Defense. The Honorable Jay Hottinger, State Senator, House District 31, spoke on the $77 billion biannual state budget. Hottinger said that the workforce in Ohio is the “single largest issue” that is keeping us (Ohio) from taking the next leap. “We need a workforce that can meet the needs now and in the future – and a drug free workforce.” Hottinger talked about Senate Bill 11, which he introduced. It is expected that jobs in science, technology, engineering and math fields will increase twice as fast as other careers and pay 26 percent more. Rep. Bill Hayes, State Representative, House District 72, said that Ohio needs to do more about educating our youth about drugs, enforcing drug laws and reducing the supply. Hayes had spent time earlier in the day at the OSU Extension office in Coshocton County and said, “The OSU Extension dollars are the best bucks that we spend in Ohio.” Joy Padgett, representing the Governor’s Office of Appalachia, talked about the grant process and said that “the world is run by the people that show up.” She also said that grants “take a lot of work” and that the new buzzword is “shared services.” This is especially true in the area of water and sewer services. Jeanne Wilson, the Senior Appalachian Regional Representative for the office of U. S. Senator Sherrod Brown, said, “Senator Brown supports a uniform corporate tax rate – as long as the playing field is level. The Senator is also a big proponent of broadband expansion – keying in

BY MARK FORTUNE on the middle mile to the home. Regarding drug abuse, Wilson said, “We need a multi-faceted approach.” Jason Knox, the Southeast Ohio District Representative for the Office of U. S. Senator Rob Portman, said, “Senator Portman was a cosponsor of the DATA Act, which will shed more light on dollars spent by federal agencies – and will watch for abuse and fraud. He also said that, “We need to stop sex trafficking.” Senator Portman is focusing on the Lake Erie region, with attention on preventing algae blooms from getting into the water supply.” Tim Ross, representing Governor Kasich’s office, said, “Ohio’s economy is moving. Small businesses are a priority for the Governor. We’re creating jobs at a two to one ratio in small business versus manufacturing. And we are focusing on jobs that we are going to need.” Ross talked about the oil and gas severance tax which is a part of the Governor’s budget. Dan Risko, regional representative for the Office of Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, talked about a new website, www.ohiocheckbook.com, which he suggested everyone visit. “This website will provide transparency for where we spend your money.” There are many groups supporting the new website. Ed Looman, representing the APEG region for Jobs Ohio, said, “Our biggest success in this region for 2014 is certainly the announced Kraft expansion.” Dane Shryock, speaking on behalf of the Coshocton County Commissioners, said in closing, “I would like to echo the comments made earlier about the tremendous effort put into this event, to pull all of these officials together at the same time, and recognize Dorothy (Skowrunski) and her assistant, Renee (Hardesty) with a round of applause.” MARK@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Career and Technical Education Month recognized COSHOCTON - February was Career and Technical Education Month, and the Association for Career & Technical Education set the theme as Recognizing Classroom Innovators. The celebration recognized the achievements and accomplishments of career and technical education community members throughout the nation. Innovation by Coshocton County Career Center staff in previous years has enabled careertech students to get out of the classroom and into the community. Career and technical education classrooms, like at the CCCC, are modern-day laboratories. “Career-tech education in itself is innovative,” said Rick Raach, CCCC superintendent. “It’s a way of preparing students for college and a career.” Labs at the CCCC need to be comparable

to the ever-changing workforce. The school examines all the technology used within its labs, not just computers and smart boards, and strives to have students job ready when they complete their program. “It’s all about making them competitive and ready to go out there and work,” Raach said. Past innovation at the CCCC allows students today to gain hands-on experience while providing community services. Students are learning while providing low-cost hair salon services for the public; building homes and other projects for nonprofit organizations; trimming trees; and even directing traffic at special events. Some of the innovation in the classroom forges valuable partnerships in the community. Recently, the building trades program developed a partnership with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. Students will assist the non-profit

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON agency by completing drywall and other special project work. There are 11 career-tech programs at the CCCC, ranging from natural resources and cosmetology, to criminal justice and health technology. Career and technical education can prepare students for a wide range of careers and further educational opportunities. Check out all of the programs by visiting www.coshoctoncareers. org.

PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON HOLMES COUNTY - At its Feb. 25, member meeting, the Amish Country Lodging Council presented the proceeds from the Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns to charity. Representatives Julian Coblentz of the Holmes County Higher Education Foundation and Colleen Nettleton of Life Care Hospice of Holmes and Wayne Counties attended the event and accepted checks totaling more than $15,000. “We have reached a milestone,” said Cookie Tour Chairperson Loretta Coblentz. “In seven years of hosting the Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns we have donated more than $90,000 to charity.” Twelve inns of Amish Country celebrated ’12 Days of Christmas’ during the Seventh annual Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns event. The tour, hosted by the Amish Country Lodging Council, took place on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14, 2014. More than 1,200 visitors from across Ohio and adjoining states enjoyed delicious cookies as they toured through the inns, dressed up and decked out for the holidays. On their self-guided tour, guests received a specialty cookie at each inn. The delectable delights included Gooey Red

SHREVE - This Dinner Theater is being sponsored by the County Line Historical Society as a fundraiser. Meet Cy Young, as portrayed by Chris Hart, as he steps from a train having just returned from Cleveland Stadium where he was honored with a tribute day. Hart reminisces of Young’s life in the early days of major league baseball, setting records and the ups and downs of a career that stretched more than 20 years. But despite all the fanfare and glory, Young’s greatest pleasure was returning to Tuscarawas hills every off season to his wife and the joy of being a simple farmer, and you might just learn why they called him Cy. Young left many a mark for future generations of pitchers to shoot at in addition to his 511 victories. He is the only pitcher who won more than 30 victories in five different years. In 11 other seasons, he won more than 20 games. He is the only pitcher who pitched better than .700 ball for three successive seasons, with the exception of Mathewson, his percentage with the Red Sox being .756 in 1901, .727 in 1902 and .757 in 1903. Young was the first pitcher to twirl three no-hit-games. The first was against Cincinnati on September 18, 1897, and the second against the Athletics on May 5, 1904,

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON was a perfect game. The third, against the Yankees on June 30, 1908, was pitched when Young was 41 years old. This record was later surpassed by Sandy Koufax, who pitched four no-hitters, and Noland Ryan, who pitched seven. COSHOCTON Casee Allen wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of his family and friends in Coshocton and that is why the country singer is doing his single release concert in his hometown. The 2008 Coshocton High School graduate will return to Coshocton for a concert on Friday, April 17, at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the concert starts at 7 p.m. Bleacher presale tickets are $5, floor presale tickets are $10 and kids 10 and under are free. To reserve tickets, call 740-2947183 or purchase them at Woodbury Outfitters. Proceeds benefit the Coshocton County 4-H Horse Committee towards barn improvements and the Silver Bar Saddle Club. All presale ticket purchasers will receive a free CD single from Allen. “They are going to get it before iTunes and the radio,” he said. “I want to give back to my hometown because that is where it all started.” Allen got his first drum set when he was 3-years-old and often performed in talent shows while growing up, but he put music aside to dedicate time to wrestling. That all changed once he got out of high school. “I was going to OSU Newark and cage fighting and even coached some wrestling, but music was still a hobby,” Allen said. “My brother and I would play in the backyard and it would be full of people. We started getting asked to play at birthday and graduation parties and at local bars.” They ended up forming a band called Route 83 that got asked to play in Put-in-Bay. While there he met Kip Moore, who is known for the song, “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck.” “He asked me what I do and I told him I was selling cars and going to college,” Allen said. “He told me I needed to go to Nashville (Tennessee) and write my butt off. My brother and I packed up and were just going to go for one night, but we ended up staying.” Allen never forgot where he came from though and is planning to also treat concert goers to the chance to be in his first ever music video. “I’ve got the acting part shot and will have a crew from Nashville fly in to film the live half of the video at the (April 17) concert,” he said. “I always said I was going to do this in my hometown and I’m really looking forward to making that happen. Plus I get to help my little cousin raise money (for the Coshocton County 4-H Horse Committee and Silver Bar Saddle Club). I hope this is a sell out.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

For many years, the Rotary Club purchased dictionaries for the third grade students each year. Then, knowing that technology makes a dictionary more accessible electronically, and knowing that many teachers reach into their own pockets to provide for their classrooms, the Club voted to give teachers across the district the opportunity to apply for grants. The project was so well received in the 2013-14 school year that the club chose to repeat the project in the 201415 school year.
