Oscar Rose Steak and Seafood House is officially open for business after Mayor Steve Mercer and John Larson cut the ribbon on March 13. Oscar Rose will have its grand opening on Easter Sunday, March 31, with Rosie’s Easter Grand Buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will continue to be open each Sunday during that time and feature a buffet. Normal operating hours will be Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oscar Rose will still continue to specialize in steak and seafood. COSHOCTON - The Charles Hathaway IV Boy Scout Fund has been established at the Coshocton Foundation.

The fund was created by Chuck and Paula Hathaway, parents of 24-year-old Charles IV, who died in May 2012. The fund will benefit local Boy Scouts by assisting them in achieving their dreams by having adventures at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the Boy Scout National Jamboree or another Boy Scout High Adventure experience.

An Eagle Scout and 2008 graduate of Coshocton High School, Charles graduated magna cum laude in 2010 with a B.S. in business administration from The Ohio State University.

He fell ill when he and a friend were hiking on the Great Wall of China in the mountains outside of Beijing and died unexpectedly shortly after returning to the city.

Charles told friends he was “living the dream,” and one friend described Charles as being “just as comfortable in New York City rush hour as he was sitting all alone on top of a mountain.”

Electronic Media visiting assistant professor wins Dissertation Award CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

LANCASTER - An Ohio University Lancaster Visiting Assistant Professor has won the Kenneth Harwood Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Broadcast Education Association. Shane Tilton of Coshocton, will accept the award at the BEA annual convention in Las Vegas, Nev. in April.

“I’m very excited and humbled,” said Tilton. “I’m honored that the Broadcast Education Association considered my work worthy of this honor.”

Established by Kenneth Harwood, professor at the University of Houston and a former president of the BEA, the award offers $1,000 for the outstanding Ph.D. dissertation in broadcasting and electronic media.

The award was established through gifts started by Professor Harwood and a donation from a friend of BEA. The Broadcast Education Association is a professional association for professors, industry professionals and students who are interested in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises. The Harwood award is a nationally competitive award.

Tilton won the Harwood award for his dissertation called “First year students in a foreign fabric: A triangulation study on Facebook as a method of coping/adjustment.”

“It’s a one year study of how freshman use Facebook to become adjusted to the first year of college,” said Tilton. “It looks at how they share videos, music and pictures as a way of dealing with their feelings.”

Tilton defended his dissertation at Ohio University in Athens in December.

He is in charge of the Electronic Media Technology program at Ohio University Lancaster.

When asked who contributed the most to her self-development, she named her mother, Amy. The experience that has given her the greatest satisfaction is marching band because it gives her musical experience over the summer and into the school year. Serving as the field commander of the marching band has given her much leadership experience.

WEST LAFAYETTE – Alexandra Boone, daughter of Tim and Amy Bourne, was named the Rotary student of the month for March 2013.

Boone, a Ridgewood High School junior, is involved in all of the music opportunities at Ridgewood High School. She is a member of the marching, concert, jazz and pep bands. She has served as the marching band field commander for the past two years. In addition to her band activities, Boone also is a member of the concert choir, the chorale and the women’s ensemble, Common Sense. Other school activities include the foreign language club as well as being an

“Local government should not be involved in this matter,” said Commissioner Curtis Lee. “We are not in the Internet business.”

However, the Commissioners were concerned about some past situations where they did assist other organizations with Internet service.

“We did assist one or two in the past, but they had no other options,” said Commissioner Dane Shryock. “Hopewell Industries has multiple opportunities with other companies. I think we should send a letter to the other places and let them know that if they have other options now they need to use them and not us.”

The Commissioners worried about the financial burden their decision would put on Hopewell Industries, but decided it was best they step away from the situation so they are not competing with private Internet providers.

Mary Thompson-Hufford from Hopewell Industries was called back to the meeting and informed that the county would quit its service to the building June 30 and the phones and Internet would stop working.

It wasn’t the answer Thompson-Hufford was hoping for but she was glad to finally have one.

Hopewell Industries is in the process of privatizing, but was hoping it could still get an Internet drop from the county.

The Commissioners first thought was that a government entity should not be in direct competition with a public one, but they wanted to examine all sides of the issue before making a decision.

In his role as CFO, Silvestri will oversee all financial elements of the hospital and its physician clinics, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial reporting, third party contracts and patient financial services. He will also oversee information technology services and will have responsibility for assessing financial reporting relative to strategic planning and process improvement initiatives.

Silvestri was previously employed by Summa Southwest Region in Barberton, where he has worked as controller and then as regional controller for the $800 million subsidiary of a multi-billion dollar integrated health system.

During his tenure, he successfully guided the department through multiple system conversions, identified substantial tax savings opportunities and coordinated departmental restructuring to meet department productivity goals. His

March 24th, 1963 A 55-year-old historic mural had just received a new lease on life as local and famed illustrator, Benton Clark, restored the painting to its original luster. The painting depicted a scene of Col. Bouquet’s Treaty in 1764 and was the work of the late Arthur William Woelfle, completed in the Coshocton County Courthouse in 1908. Not only was Benton an ideal choice for the job because he was a famed illustrator, but he also studied art under Mr. Woelfle. Like Benton, Woelfle also became extremely popular in the art world, painting portraits for celebrities in New York.

March 25th, 1973 Mrs. Weston may have been 89 years old, but her age didn’t seem to slow her down.

Weston, who would turn 90 in October, was still very active in her home and found activities to keep her busy. She loved to make afghans, and in 1972 alone, she made 26 afghans. Over the last 10 years, she had made 20-25 afghans a year. Weston also found time to crochet, having taught herself when she was 34 years old. Weston still liked to cook her own meals and was known to put together a whole jigsaw puzzle in one evening. Her motto was, “You’re never too old to learn something new.”

March 26th, 1953 Every Saturday morning, residents could find a long line of children outside of the Sixth Street Theatre, waiting impatiently for the doors to open for “Kiddie Korner”, a live broadcast over WTNS. The show, then in its sixth week, had been growing in popularity.

Every week, Stan Robinson and Bob Speaks led the eager children through quizzes, games, and interviews. The Panel Quiz was made up of five children chosen from Coshocton schools to compete for a chance to win a grand prize and come back next week. A birthday party for one lucky child each week featuring a birthday cake was also very popular.

COSHOCTON - Oscar Rose Steak and Seafood House, formerly Thomas’ Steakhouse, opened for business March 13.

John Larson, owner of Oscar Rose, took over the business Dec. 5 and immediately began talking to regular customers about how they would like to see the restaurant transform into a

“We gave this place a facelift,” said Larson.

“We started talking with people and wanted to see a change and bring this place back to life.”

Larson began remodeling the restaurant Feb. 18, and employed many local businesses to help with remodeling. The new restaurant features newly-remodeled restrooms, a new bar area, a private meeting or party room, a new fireplace with a photo featuring Mr. and Mrs. Thomas above the fireplace, a Wall of Heritage which will feature photos, news articles, and menus of restaurants that have been in that location in the past, new paint, wall hangings, tables and chairs, and much more.

“We wanted to make an efficient place where people could come and have a good meal and socialize,” said Larson.

Larson decided to name the restaurant Oscar Rose after his father, Oscar, and his mother,

Rosemary. He said that what used to be called ‘The Nook’ at Thomas’ will now be renamed ‘Rosie’s Nook’.

Oscar Rose Steak and Seafood House will have its grand opening on Easter Sunday, March 31, with Rosie’s Easter Grand Buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will continue to be open each Sunday during that time and feature a buffet. Normal operating hours will be Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oscar Rose will still continue to specialize in steak and seafood.

COSHOCTON - Casey Claxon was happy to see the crowd that had turned out for the March 13, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Breakfast at Hopewell School.

“I appreciate all of you being here and supporting our mission of empowering our individuals,” said Claxon, who is the DD Board President.

One of the people served by the organization’s school age program is Colton Rose.

“This is his second year in the preschool program and I have seen improvements in his speech, activity and confidence,” said Emily Miller, Rose’s mother. “He’s also becoming more independent. It’s been wonderful to watch him grow.”

Miller also commented on how much her son enjoys going to school.

“He looks forward to school and tries to convince me to take him on weekends,” she said. “He also knows the staff by name and they have become like family. We are blessed to have them in our lives.

The crowd also heard from Susan Warne who spoke about how adult services/community employment has changed her life.

The breakfast also included the presentation of a proclamation from the Coshocton County Commissioners declaring March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and Steve Oster, County Board Superintendent handed out several awards.

The volunteer award went to Amanda Fink, youth volunteer was Devin Smith, support professional was Erica Betz, partner of the year was Kathie Dickerson, distinguished service was Sandy Hess, and individual achievement went to Phyllis Gallion.

Several of the honored individuals were speechless but a few of them took the microphone after receiving their awards.

“My heart is here and I am glad to help,” Fink said.

Betz commented that she is privileged to work with her client and never wants the relationship to end.

Dickerson, who recently left her position at the Tribune, said she will miss working with people from the DD Board.

“I will miss covering events like this,” she said. “Everyone who works for the Board of DD cares about what they do.”

Hess also cares greatly about the students she works with at the Coshocton County Career Center.

“I’m blessed to work with my students,” she said. “There is so much they can do.”

During the month of March the DD Board is encouraging the public to do just what Hess does daily with her students – look beyond a disability and see the potential of people.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON March 17-23 marks Coshocton County 4-H Week, where we celebrate the volunteers and youth that are a part of the nation’s largest youth development organization. Coshocton County 4-H has a long history, having been started in 1917 when a corn club and a calf club were organized. The 4-H club program was officially organized in 1919 under the supervision of County Extension Agent G.C. Musgrove. By 1920 the club program expanded to more than 100 4-H members. Most of the girls’ clubs were focused on canning, because there was a need for the rural people to preserve their garden vegetables to eat during the winter.

The boys’ clubs were livestock clubs, most of which were pig clubs.

Today the 4-H program in Coshocton County continues to educate youth with

Youth project areas have greatly expanded since the formation of 4-H with over 200 different projects to pick from in main categories including: Animal Sciences, Child and Family Development, Clothing & Textile Science, Creative and Leisure Arts, Food and Nutrition, Healthy Living, Home Living, Leadership and Citizenship, Money Management, Natural Resources, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, Self-Determine, and Workforce Preparation. This year’s 4-H Theme and 4-H Week activities focus around our theme of “4-H Unwraps the Potential in Youth,” a very fitting theme that can be seen by our many parents and volunteers as they watch youth excel in their chosen project area. There are projects for every child’s interests.

If you want to find out more about 4-H, now is a great time to join. 4-H is open for individuals age 5 and in Kindergarten to age 19. Interested individuals and community members can help us celebrate 4-H week by checking out our window displays decorated by 4-H clubs around town or visiting us at the OSU Open House.

4-H frozen food sale COSHOCTON - It is time once again for the annual 4-H Frozen Food Sale. This is a significant fundraiser for participating County 4-H Clubs, as each participating club earns 10 percent of their club’s total sales. The fundraiser is sponsored by the Coshocton County 4-H Advisory Committee, but order forms can be obtained from any 4-H member or at our local OSU Extension office.

In addition to being a club fundraiser, individual 4-H members can achieve financial scholarships to be applied to 4-H Junior Camps by achieving a particular sales level. All 4-H clubs appreciate the overwhelming support

WEST LAFAYETTE - John and Lynnette Hardesty of West Lafayette announce the engagement of their daughter, Martha Hardesty, to Matthew Adams, son of Karen Adams and Dennis Adams, of Lisbon, Ohio.

The bride-elect is a 2006 graduate of Ridgewood High School, a 2010 graduate of The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science, and a 2012 graduate of Kent State University with a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology.

She is a Speech Language Pathologist at Licking Heights Local Schools in Pataskala.

COSHOCTON - The Johnson-Humrickhouse presents its 23rd annual exhibit of Teen-Age Talent Saturday, March 23 through Sunday, April 28.

The exhibit features more than 100 works from the four area high schools. The artwork covers a wide range of styles, from watercolor paintings and tissue paper collage to papiermâché and mixed media sculpture. A number of the works have a pop culture flare. River View students created ceramic bobble head figures and Walt Disney themed paintings. Likewise, Coshocton students produced some fun pieces with their album cover art and Warhol-like portraits using layers of cardboard to show depth.

View student Elisha Hamric painted a landscape and added highly textured 3-D trees that create an impression of fantasy. Perhaps the painting is actually a portal into another world. Another impressive painting is by Coshocton High School student Madeline Hire. Her H is for Heron could be found in any well-illustrated ABC book.

Works for Teen-Age Talent were chosen for their outstanding quality by art teachers Myrtle Beall, Adam Wagner and Carissa Dickerson and Raylene DeLuca. The work will be judged in four categories: Two-dimensional Fine Art, 3-Dimensional, Design, and Black and White Drawing.

The theme of the artists’ reception is Tie-d on Art and will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

COSHOCTON - Coshocton City Schools will begin receiving applications for the 2013-2014 school year for preschool children.

Children who are eligible for the early childhood education preschool classroom must be 3-years-old on or before Aug. 1 of this year, toilet trained, reside in the school district and meet income eligibility guidelines. The total family income cannot exceed federal poverty guidelines at 200 percent or less of the poverty level.

All information will need to be complete before the child is considered for enrollment. The parents will need to provide a birth certificate, social security card, immunization record, custody papers, if applicable, and proof of family income.

Speakers share knowledge at Tiverton Community Institute TIVERTON The Tiverton Community Hall was packed Wednesday morning March 6, for informative presentations by Emily Adams and Ken Smailes, which were part of the Tiverton Community Institute’s schedule of events. Adams, the OSU Extension County Director, Extension Educator, Ag & Natural Resources, shared agriculture facts with the crowd and explained some of the many programs and classes that her office offers to the community. When she was done speaking, Smailes from WTNS Radio and a local historian, gave a presentation called, “Beyond the Walls, Main Street Coshocton Comes Alive.” The Tiverton Community Institute is one of the last two day institutes in Ohio and includes presentations, contests, music and community meals. Cemetery Clean-Up. The Canal Lewisville cemetery will begin its annual spring cleanup March 25. All decorations will be removed and discarded at that time. Anyone wanting to save Christmas decorations or personal items must remove them by March 24.

Eggs marked Victory Assembly of God will be hidden between Canal and Main St. in Newcomerstown. Ring the Bells for Habitat. The 13th annual Ring the Bells for Habitat hand bell concert will be on Palm Sunday, March 24 at 3 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Presbyterian Church.
