TRIMMING Steve Fox was one of the Tree Commission members out trimming the trees on Main Street the morning of March 19. Joining him on the project were fellow commission members Ann Miller, Connie Miller, Tom Heading and Jim Marcentile. They were looking for damaged limbs, ones that were interfering or crossing each other and ones that were too close to buildings or could be easily walked into. The city supplied a dump truck, driven

by Rob Hudson from the street department, to haul all the branches away. Heading said, spring is a good time to trim trees because you can see which branches are dead and don’t have any buds on them. 1975 River View grad performing at Roscoe UMC 1983. He has performed as a soloist with the Saint Louis Symphony and the Aspen Music Festival and performed with the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, Summit Brass, and the Bay Brass. He is a founding member of the Trombones of the Saint Louis Symphony and is co-founder of the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective. He has taught at the Aspen Music Festival, the University of Missouri at Columbia and currently teaches trombone at Washington University in Saint Louis.

The first half of Myers’s recital will feature him playing the trombone and during the second half he will play the euphonium.

“I primarily play classical music because that is what my primary ensemble Saint Louis Symphony mostly does,” he said. “We do also play some big band type music and sometimes music from film scores.”

He also used to perform with the Coshocton Community band and occasionally was a soloist with them.

“I haven’t performed in Coshocton except for at a couple of weddings in 30 years,” Myers said.

“I’m looking forward to connecting with people that I knew from when I lived in Coshocton and connecting with whoever wants to come listen to a concert of trombone euphonium music. The main thing you want to do as a musician is connect with people.”

The 1975 RVHS alumnus will be in concert at 7 p.m.

Public sector LeanOhio BootCamp at COTC

CONTRIBUTED NEWARK - Training is available for those who work within government agencies, political subdivisions and subsidiaries, hospitals, emergency services, and education, and there are no out of pocket expenses. LeanOhio BootCamp is a five-day standardized, public-sector-focused training designed to help public entities operate simpler, faster, better and less costly; to cut red tape and to better meet customer needs.

There are two BootCamp options available yet this year: April 14, 15, 21, 22, and 29 to be held in Pataskala, and May 12, 13, 19, 20, 27 to be held in Newark. Registration is now available for public-sector employees and decision-makers to participate in one of these LeanOhio BootCamps available through Central Ohio Technical College’s Workforce Development Innovation Center.

Participants will receive a scholarship voucher to attend the BootCamp, as COTC is the recipient of a training grant sponsored by the Ohio Development Services Agency (DSA) and the Local Government Efficiency Program (LGEP), which was developed to offer local political subdivisions training and support to learn and apply Lean strategies to innovate, provide better service and save money. The training will be open to anyone who works in the public sector, and is most effective for decision-makers and leaders in the organization.

Many may be familiar with the Lean processes commonly implemented within the manufacturing industry. Some of the more common terms associated with such are Lean, Six Sigma, & Kaizen. To elaborate, Lean is primarily about speed; identifying and removing waste in processes. Six Sigma is primarily about removing variation in processes. Many of the same principles and processes will be explored through the LeanOhio Bootcamp, as they relate to the operation of public agencies.

The Bootcamps will be facilitated by Performance Consultant and Ohio DAS Certified LeanOhio facilitator Toni Bell.

Presbyterians celebrate Easter joy CONTRIBUTED

COSHOCTON - The Presbyterian Church, North Fourth and Chestnut streets, will celebrate the Resurrection with festival worship on Sunday, March 27. An extended prelude will begin at 10:10 a.m., and worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. The sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated.

The Reverend Jonathan T. Carlisle will preach on “The Big Bang and Resurrection,” and Barbara R. Snyder will be the liturgist.

Musical leadership will be provided by the Chancel Choir, the Crusaders Choir, Alice M. Hoover, organ, Ann A. Leppla, piano, Matthew P. Downing, tenor, the Roscoe Brass Quintet, and Matt H. Hayes, timpani.

Additional musicians for the prelude will be E. Luane Campbell, flute, and Caroline S. Heading, piano.

All are invited to join in this worship celebration. Preschool childcare is provided and ample parking is available.

Council votes for Kimble trash pickup option “Shame on both of you for trying to circumvent the democratic process.”

Coshocton City Council President Cliff Biggers said, “There’s no panacea. This is a start. We hear people all the time ask about what we can do to beautify Coshocton. Let’s not be myopic. This is bigger than just trash collection.

Let’s look beyond this.”

At promptly 6 p.m., Cliff Biggers called the special meeting to order and a second reading of the ordinance was read. With a vote, the rules were suspended that allowed a third reading of the ordinance and then a vote.

The cost for the Kimble option will be an additional $1.05 per household.

Scott Walter from Kimble commented following the passing of the ordinance, “We’re very appreciative to have the opportunity to come back into the city and provide the service that we’ve been talking about. We think this is going to be a nice step forward for the city to beautify and help clean up the city and really upgrade the service. As I mentioned tonight the Kimble family has been a long time business owner in the city and a long-time supporter of the community so we’re happy to have the chance to come back and provide a high level of service and hopefully some equipment that the city hasn’t seen before but we think they’re going to like it.”

Walter responded to a question that came

up several times during the question and answer session held at 5 p.m. about whether or not this decision would help beautify the city. Walter said, “I answer that from experience really.

We service 25 counties in eastern Ohio and the majority of the communities in our market area have already switched to these carts so I can speak from experience that it has been a very positive move and it’s really the wave of the future in the industry for a lot of reasons that we talked about tonight. So really Coshocton is joining the ranks of places like Dover, Baltic, Killbuck, Dresden and Rittman and I could go on and on. Dozens of communities in eastern Ohio have already made this switch and there’s always a small percentage of folks who are nervous about change and nervous about having these carts and of course, we’re not going to force anybody to use them but we usually find that 95 percent or more of the citizens use them and enjoy them and don’t want to give them back after they’ve used them for a while.”

The current contract that Waste Management has with the city of Coshocton will expire at the end of March.

A spokesperson for the city of Coshocton said that Kimble is scheduled to begin trash removal on Friday, April 1.

COSHOCTON - Following a lively session of questions and answers at a special committee meeting in Coshocton City Council chambers on Thursday evening, March 17, members of city council voted unanimously to go with the Kimble option for refuse removal in the city of Coshocton. Jackie Salmans was excused and all six members of council present voted yes.

Representatives from Kimble and Waste Management were on hand at the meeting and addressed members of the community and council with an overview of their respective companies.

One of the reasons for the lively discussion is that Kimble will be providing plastic trash bins – that are available in two sizes – for households in the city of Coshocton. Several residents on hand were concerned about the size and being able to move the trash bins to the street or a suitable waste pickup site.

Scott Walter, speaking for Kimble, said, “We want to see Coshocton do well. The Kimble family is heavily invested in Coshocton – we have given over $800,000 to various charitable causes over the past 10 years.”

Council member Brad Fuller responded to a question of whether the current system is broken, saying, “This is an opportunity to do something different.”

Other comments ranged from initial concern to accepting the trash bins. One resident said,

COSHOCTON - One student from Coshocton Elementary School had her artwork on display at the 36th annual Young People’s Art Exhibition in Columbus. The art exhibit was sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association. The artwork was submitted by Mrs. Young, visual-arts teacher at Coshocton Elementary school.

Trinity Stockton, a fourth grader was chosen to be exhibited at the 36th annual Young People’s Art Exhibition. The exhibit is being hosted by the Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus.

Her artwork was a pastel and glue resist on black paper that she created using soft pastels in warm and cool colors. Her work was inspired by the artist Vincent Van Gogh.

The exhibit is on display from Feb. 28 to March 26. There are nine regions in Ohio representing the O.A.E.A., and this year’s show includes more than 125 student works from all over the state.

Appreciation breakfast held Commissioners review light agenda at meeting

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners had a light agenda for their March 16 meeting. Highlights of it included the following: • Request a motion to hire Doug Royston as a Social Service Worker 2 at the Department of Job and Family Services effective March 30, as requested by Melinda Fehrman, DJFS director.

• Request a motion to appoint Kathy Thompson to the Regional Airport Authority effective immediately. Her term will end Jan. 31, 2019.

• Receive the dog warden’s report for the week ending March 14, with six dogs picked up by the warden, one dog brought in as stray, five dogs destroyed, 35 citations issued, 45 calls handled, 30 dog licenses sold, 12 late fees paid, 11 dogs sold, three dogs redeemed, five dogs (four puppies) per owner surrender, $45 in boarding fees collected for a total of $784 in fees collected.

• Request a motion to approve the payment request for Straitline Structures, Inc. for the Warsaw EMS Building in the amount of $27,625.

This will be the ninth payment to them for a total amount paid to date of $479,825. The total cost for the project is close to $600,000.

COSHOCTON – Auditions are complete and CONTRIBUTED the finalists for the 28th annual Edward E. Montgomery Jr. Piano Competition are selected.

Junior Division finalists are: Leah Brinker, daughter of Susan and Alan Brinker; Jakob Reveal, son of Cherie and Craig Reveal; Claire Killiany, daughter of Sarah and Jason Killiany; and Mirra Williams, daughter of Melissa Williams. The winner, selected from these finalists will receive a $250 cash award from The Montgomery Foundation.

On Sunday, April 3, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Triple Locks Theatre, these local students will perform on the Montgomery Piano before a panel of five judges. Adjudicators representing Coshocton County Schools are Tom Havelka, Alan English and Jane Crow. Those from the university community will be Dr. Joyce Alesandrini from Muskingum University and Dr. Gerald K. Lee from West Liberty State College.

Honor Flight Columbus has at least six trips planned for 2016, beginning in early April.

They travel on chartered Southwest Airlines 737 aircraft and in modern motor coaches when in Washington.

“Thanks to the generosity and support of individual donors, companies and civic organizations that sponsored flights to Washington, we can again fly about 500 senior veterans this year,” said Downing. “The sooner we get an application, the sooner the veteran can enjoy the travel to see the monuments.”

At the end of flying season 2015, 4,148 senior veterans have had a day of honor in Washington D.C. with Honor Flight Columbus since the program began.

Honor Flight Columbus recognizes and celebrates World War II and Korean War veterans by flying them to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials dedicated to their important service at no cost to them. The volunteers work year round to celebrate America’s Senior Veterans.

Honor Flight Columbus accepts applications from America’s senior veterans: Currently, these are the men and women who served during WWII and Korean War years. In addition, it puts terminally ill veterans from any era at the head of the line.

Accordingly, WWII veterans will continue to have top priority, with Korean veterans now comprising the majority of each flight.

Veterans wishing to learn more may visit the Coshocton County Veterans Service Office.

Office staff is also willing to assist with the application process.

NEWARK - Vendors who are interested in being part of the 2016 annual Independence Day Concert and Fireworks display held annually on July 3, on the campus of The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College, can apply now. Accepted vendors will be located on the campus grounds during the event.

The evening’s celebration begins with popular local musical groups with all performances held at the Martha Grace Reese Amphitheater. Of course, the crowd-favorite fireworks display begins at dusk to the accompaniment of patriotic, favorite, musical selections.

COSHOCTON - Employees of the SportZone in Coshocton removed the signs announcing a scheduled March 31 auction of the property on Friday, March 11. Signs have also been removed from four other properties in Coshocton that are also scheduled to be auctioned on the 31st.

The auction has been ordered by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Julie Lynch.

SportZone owner Charles Moon told The Beacon in an interview on March 11 how it felt to remove the signs. “It’s exciting for me and it’s exciting for Coshocton and it’s exciting for our employees. We have come to an understanding with the bank and we’ve been instructed to take the signs down. They are not moving forward with the sale which was originally scheduled for the last day of this month and we here at the SportZone are waiting for folks to come in and have some good food.”

with the fact that we’re not really sure who has the SportZone because the people in Coshocton think that it’s their SportZone and that’s fine because it is – and so it’s very gratifying to hear all the positive comments and to hear all the folks who are concerned about what the future was for the restaurant as well as for the employees here. So it’s a very positive thing and it’s very moving to see the community step out and offer this type of support.”

The Beacon asked Charles Moon about how the situation and the process transpired. Moon said, “I can tell you some things. The things I can tell you are that this particular process is stopped at this point in time. I can’t make a lot of comments. I can’t speak for the bank that we’re doing business with. That’s not something I can do. However, I can tell you that it’s been a struggle but we are on the side of believing that it’s happening very positively for us right now.”

Girl Scout cookies on their way to Afghanistan

COSHOCTON – Mary Knicely was blown away by the response she got when asking if anyone wanted to help send Girl Scout Cookies to her son-in-law’s unit in Afghanistan.

“They are $4 a box and people would say

they’d give me $8 or $20,” she said. “I kept track of their names and what they wanted and the list just kept grown and growing. A lot of people gave one or two boxes, but there were some who gave four or five.”

Before she knew it Knicely had 76 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies ordered from her friend’s granddaughter.

“It all happened really fast,” she said. “I have the cookies now and am hoping to get them mailed out this week (the week of March 14). I got cookies from people I never thought I would have. We have a lot of support around here and it’s just awesome.”

The cookies will be distributed to troops serving with 1SG Jason McCormick, who is with the Army’s B-TRP, 3-89 CAV, 4/10 Mt. out of Fort Polk in Louisiana. McCormick, a 1998 graduate of Coshocton High School, is married to Knicely’s daughter Kristy, who graduated from River View High School in 1998. This is Jason’s sixth deployment to the Iraq/Afghanistan area.

Knicely’s son Kyle, who also is in the Army, has spent time overseas and her husband Bob is a Vietnam Veteran.

“When you’ve been around the military as long as we have you realize there are some guys who don’t get anything sent to them,” Mary said.

“Jason gets a lot from his family and wife, but I know he has guys who don’t get things so that’s why I wanted to send this to the whole troop. I know a box of cookies isn’t much, but at least they’ll know someone is thinking off them.”

Bill, Kyle’s father, explained that he and his wife are already working on plans to help the next generation continue the farm by doing things such as investing in land when the time is right, updating to GPS equipped equipment, beefing up cover crops and doing estate planning. However, he also stressed how important it is for farmers to make time for family.

“There are days you think you just have to keep going, but you won’t get those days back so take time for your family,” Bill said.

Kelly Miller from Farm Credit Mid-America, which helped sponsor the luncheon, thanked all the speakers.

“While you all talked about the theme I also heard from each of you how important family is and that farming is in your blood and you can’t get it out,” she said. “I thank you for sharing.”

The Soil and Water Conservation District, local OSU Extension office and Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce also helped sponsor the event. Coshocton County Commissioner Dane Shryock also was there to present a proclamation recognizing Ag Day and Ridgewood FFA members assisted organizers.

Agriculture is the number one industry in Coshocton County and the goal of this now annual event is to show gratitude toward and recognize all those who work in the field and help provide us with plentiful and safe food.

“There are no better stewards of the land than those who depend on it for a living,” Miller said.

His classmate Orion Samuell was glad he could be part of the event.

“I enjoy helping out in the community,” he said. “It’s nice.”

COSHOCTON – Becky Richards was grinning from ear to ear after earning a third place ribbon in the hoop shoot at the 22nd annual Kiwanis Special Olympics Track & Field Day. She and her fellow residents at Echoing Hills along with clients from Gentlebrook, Hopewell Industries, RHDD and others with developmental or physical disabilities were happy to participate in the DD Awareness Month event on March 15 at Kids America.

“It’s so much fun,” said Troy Gibson, who came with the group from Hopewell Industries to compete in events. “I’ve been before and like the running. It’s exercise for basketball.”

Kyle Blackson, who also was representing Hopewell Industries, agreed with him and LaTasha Fralin was excited to be with the group at the event for the first time.

COSHOCTON - Our Towne Coshocton, Inc., held its annual meeting on Monday evening, March 14 at the Frontier Power Community Room with board members and members of the community present. President Melissa Leist welcomed everyone, called the meeting to order and introduced board members and guests.

Leist said, “Downtown is the heartbeat of our community. It (downtown) is still beating and it can be revived. City Council has signed an ordinance to support our efforts. Revitalizing Coshocton is not a task to be taken on alone

by Our Towne Coshocton but the community as a whole. Up to now we have been working behind the scenes. Our goal is to work for a better Coshocton.”

Treasurer Michelle Turner-Ganz gave a financial update and a schedule of events for 2016 was announced by Rick Williamson, who is the promotions committee chair. The schedule so far includes First Friday – kicking off in May with a parade. Williamson said that, “July would be a Dog Days of Summer theme, August is First Farm Friday and we are thinking a tailgate theme in September.”

The Denim & Diamonds event will be at the Elks in Coshocton on June 11 with dancing and a casino. The Miracle on Main parade will be held on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.

Vice-President Barb Karr thanked two outgoing board members, John Larson and Jeff Wright, saying, “We would not be able to be where we are right now without their service.”

Joyce Barrett, who represents Heritage Ohio, was the guest speaker. She showed slides of various iconic buildings around the country and the world with most people recognizing them quickly. She then showed people “modern” buildings and asked, “Are we inspiring the next generation? The place you are is the home of the buildings that you know and love.” She also talked about brain drain and gray drain – suggesting that, “Give people the community they want. Make it a town that keeps them (seniors), their talent, time and money.”

Coshocton is Blooming, Clary Gardens host spring symposium

COSHOCTON - Coshocton is Blooming is an organization of citizens who promote “Planting Pride in our Community.” For the past several years the CIB has been able to provide planters and flowers along Main Street through donations of individuals and businesses. Recently planters were added around the court house and in front of businesses. The group has also implemented the Garden Recognition Program in neighborhoods.

The city’s tree commission was formed through efforts of a few CIB committee members, and dead trees are being removed for safety concerns.

CIB is striving to improve the overall impression that visitors get when they visit Coshocton. It is known that a community that shows pride in itself makes a positive impact on the lives of its residents and those who visit.

To help citizens of Coshocton understand the importance of planting pride, Coshocton is

Blooming and Clary Gardens are hosting a pubic symposium on Saturday, April 30 at Frontier Power. This all day event will highlight America in Bloom and review the evaluation from the visit of the America in Bloom judges in 2014.

The six categories in the AIB competition will be discussed through CIB committee members and guest speakers.

Bill Hahn, one of Coshocton’s America in Bloom Judges and the arborist for the city of Akron, is the morning keynote speaker. Doug Parkinson is the afternoon speaker. Jones resigns from commission post COSHOCTON - Robert L. “Bob” Jones resigned from the Coshocton County Veterans Service Commission, effective Dec. 31.

A resident of West Lafayette, Jones represented the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA). Jones had been appointed by Common Pleas Court Judge Robert L. Batchelor to complete the five-year term of Jack Miskimens, who passed away May 27, 2010. After fulfilling the remainder of that term, he was reappointed on Jan. 10, 2014. He has been succeeded by John R. Dotson as representative of the KWVA. Jones served in the United States Air Force from Sept. 5, 1951 through Sept. 4, 1955.

He is currently President of the KWVA and a member of the Coshocton County Honor Guard, having attended well over 300 military funerals.

Dotson joins President Jack Patterson (VFW); Vice-President David Dilly (AMVETS); Secretary Jerry Green (DAV); and Member Gary Kilpatrick (American Legion).

A veteran of the United States Army, Dotson served from Nov. 10, 1971 through Dec. 12, 1973 and was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. He will complete Jones’ term, which expires Jan. 10, 2019.

WARSAW - At a recent meeting of the executive committee of the Warsaw Alumni Association, it was determined that the 106th annual alumni banquet will be held Saturday, May 21. The celebration will begin at 4 p.m. in the gymnasium of Warsaw Elementary School. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. The registration fee will be $14 per person. This fee will pay for the meal and the association dues.

Honor classes will be 1931, 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, and the River View Class of 1966. The dinner will be baked chicken served by the Warsaw First Presbyterian Church.

A minimum of five scholarships will be presented to River View graduating seniors who attended Warsaw Elementary School.

Bridal Expo shows what Coshocton has to offer BRIDAL EXPO Future brides and grooms were greeted by 23 vendors offering services that could help them make their special day everything they dreamed of. The Fourth annual Bridal Expo was held March 20, at Coshocton Village Inn & Suites. “We do this to promote what Coshocton has to offer,” said Jennifer Sigman, manager at the inn. “A lot of people don’t think of the things we have in town.”The Village Inn & Suites and John Larson from the Warehouse Steak n’ Stein have worked together over the years to coordinate the event. “We’ve had a great turnout and have been really busy,” Sigman said.

“Our vendor numbers are up by five from last year too.”

The vendors at the event ranged from caterers to bakers to jewelry stores and everything in between. There also were representatives from venues such as the M Event Centre at Colonial Campground and RV Park. Pictured are owners of the facility, Ryan and Camille McPeek.
