Pearl Valley Swiss wins gold medal

FRESNO - Pearl Valley Cheese, a four generation, family owned business, has been making award winning Swiss Cheese for over 85 years and the honors are still rolling in. A panel of international cheese experts judging the 2014 World Championship Cheese Contest recently awarded Pear l Valley a Gold Medal in the Rindless Swiss Cheese Class. “For cheesemakers, this is like winning the Super Bowl,” said Company President Chuck Ellis. “We attribute our success to God blessing us with employees who are constantly striving to improve our quality, local dairy farmers who continually provide an excellent milk supply, and our loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years. To come out at the top among our peers in the cheese industry at such a competitive contest is a major accomplishment in the history of our company.” The World Cheese Championships are held biannually in Madison, Wis. and this year’s competition was the largest ever with 2,615 entries from 22 countries. In addition to the Gold Medal in the Rindless Swiss Cheese Class, Pearl Valley’s Swiss was also recognized as one of the 16 top cheeses in the entire competition. Each cheese was judged on a 100 point scale analyzing appearance, flavor, finish and texture. About 250,000 pounds (almost 30,000 gallons) of milk are processed per day to produce over 20,000 pounds of cheese at the factory in northeast Coshocton County. The milk used at the plant originates from dairy farmers throughout eastern Ohio. Pearl Valley manufactures a wide variety of natural cheeses including Colby, Marble, Pepper Jack, Lacey Swiss and Baby Swiss. The most recent additions to their product line include popular flavors of Chipotle Pepper Jack and Bacon Jack. Wholesale distributors in Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania distribute their cheeses around the Mid-Atlantic region. During the Easter Holiday weekend (Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19), the public is invited to visit the factory store where two hundred pounds of the same cheese judged to be the world’s best Swiss will be sold at a price of $10/lb. All proceeds from this special cheese will be donated to the Hope Clinic that offers free medical care in Coshocton. Many local stores, markets and delis carry the Pearl Valley Cheese line. Customers can also purchase from the factory store on State Route 93 in Fresno or online at www.pearlvalleycheese.com.

I can’t even being to tell you the number of people who over the years have come to the counter and poured their hearts out to us. They knew this was a safe place and that we’d pray with them, encourage them and hopefully offer them a product that was helpful.” McKee also worked with Irene Krall, who managed the store for 30 years and wanted her to mention how much the customers meant to the business.

There is no closing date set for the store as the family who owns it is still hoping someone might buy the business. “Robin Coffman was the owner,” said Kathy McKee, the store’s general manager. “This was his dream and vision, but he passed away in December. March 29th, 1964 For those people who don’t believe in miracles, here is the story of Dorothy Davidson. A native of Millersburg and frequent visitor of Coshocton, Dorothy had been struck with polio in first grade and her sight deteriorated until at the age of 18, she was completely blind. She depended on her mother for everything, but four years after her death, she met and married Loyal Davidson. One night during a revival, the preacher put hands on her and she felt a stabbing pain in her head. Instantly, she saw light and four days later on her fourth wedding anniversary, she saw the face of her husband for the first time. Dorothy said her sight was truly a gift from God.

about the Start Talking initiative is available online at StartTalking.ohio.gov. Opioid addiction is a problem that is not going to go away overnight, but we as legislators need to continue to make eradicating this epidemic a top priority. When I attended a special hearing of Health and Aging Committee in Medina during the State of the State, I heard from a physician from the Cleveland Clinic who told us that opioid and prescription drug deaths are on pace to cause 23 times the number of casualties than what was seen in the Vietnam War. That number is staggering and should serve as a wake-up call to those who continue to believe that opioid addiction is not a state-wide problem. Rep. Hottinger may be reached by calling 614466-1482, e-mailing Rep71@ohiohouse.gov or writing to State Representative Jay Hottinger, 77 S. High St., Columbus, OH 43215.

Ohio children about the harmfulness of opiate addiction. More specifically, the bill would add instruction on prescription opioid abuse prevention in the curriculum of local school districts. House Bill 367 was one of several ideas that originated last summer during the House study committee hearings. The bill passed the House almost unanimously and now awaits further consideration in the Senate. House Bill 367 is also one of approximately 13 bills involving opioid addiction that have been introduced throughout this General Assembly. Of those one, House Bill 170, has been signed by the Governor. Furthermore, at the beginning of this year, Governor Kasich unveiled a new program called Start Talking. The message of this initiative is simply to meet young kids in their various places in life and talk to them and teach them about the dangers of drugs. Young adults who speak with a parent, teacher, coach or other mentor are 50 percent less likely to use drugs. Simply sharing with them the reality of how drugs can destroy their lives can go a long way. More information

Over the past couple of years, the state legislature and the governor have been working together to combat the growing opiate addiction problem in Ohio. While the problem may not even be widely known by many people across our state, addiction to opiates has become a major concern in all 88 counties. In fact, it is now killing more people than accidental deaths. Last summer, the Ohio House organized a bipartisan study committee to analyze this serious issue. The committee traveled around the state and heard testimony from Ohioans, which produced several great ideas for legislators to begin addressing the problem. Of course, the overall issue is not going to be solved simply by passing various pieces of legislation. There must be serious efforts in homes and communities if it is ever to be resolved. But where common-sense measures can be taken legislatively, we must act diligently to do so. The primary focus, especially over the past couple months, has been to seek ways to keep dangerous, addictive substances out of the hands of young people. Just this week, the House passed legislation geared toward educating
