Johnson reflects on year as canal queen

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON It sounds cliché to say this but, it’s hard to believe that the time has come to say farewell. My experience this year as the Coshocton Canal Queen has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve gotten to travel all over the state of Ohio making new friends, eating great food, and promoting the wonderful community we live in. Over the year I have been to 47 festivals and events and traveled a total of 5,500 miles. I have been as far north as Geneva, as far south as Jackson County and Wellston, as far east as Denison, and as far west as West Jefferson. This experience could not JOHNSON have been possible without the numerous amount of businesses and people who gave both their time and money to see the festival and contest through. A special thanks goes out to the Coshocton Canal Royalty Advisory Committee for their continued support of myself and my court. Speaking of my court, it has been great getting so close with them over the year and we have a lot of memories that we will cherish forever from this experience. My family and friends have been there for me every step of the way, and I can’t thank them enough. This festival has been a part of my life for a very long time and it’s a bittersweet moment knowing that it is all coming to an end. For me this all started in 2006 when I was crowned the junior queen and her I am nine years later as queen saying goodbye for the last time. My involvement in this festival and court has taught me the importance of being yourself and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. I can look back on this experience with a smile; not only from the memories and the lifetime friends that I have made, but also for the woman I have become. OCTOBER 17TH, 1965 Spec.4 Charles K. Wright and PFC Harold L. Lahmers debarked in Vietnam with other members of the First Infantry Division. Spec.4 Wright of Coshocton and PFC Lahmers of Newcomerstown were assigned as grenadier and mechanic, respectively, with the division, which was ordered to duty as a result of President Johnson’s troop build-up in Vietnam. The “Fighting First”, as it was known, participated in 18 major campaigns during WWI and WWII and earned 15 battle streamers. In WWII, the division was first in North Africa, Sicilly and France and first to crack Hitler’s Siegfried Line. Wright entered the Army in 1960 and attended Coshocton High School. Lahmers completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky after entering the Army in January 1964. OCTOBER 14TH, 1975 An important preliminary step to launching the project to construct the new Coshocton County Joint Vocational School was taken by the City Council at Monday night’s meeting. An ordinance was unanimously approved authorizing annexation of 55 acres in the Tuscarawas Township and to start proceedings towards the proposed merger. The proposed land is in the Clow Lane area where the school was built. Due to the fact there was no adverse party involved, the annexation was to become reality in the near future. The vocational school board obtained the land from the Community Improvement Corp (CIC) for school purposes. CIC had previously purchased the land from Penn Central and Jack Toemer. If the plans are carried out as expected, the 3.3 million JVS was expected to be completed for occupancy by 1977. OCTOBER 19TH, 1985 Student journalists at Ridgewood High School included a special bond levy section in this year’s first issue of the schools’ newspaper, The Dispatch. Two pages of the paper were devoted to interviews with John Shump, superintendent, school board members, teachers and other local residents in favor of the levy. A chart detailing cost of the 5 million levy for a range of property appraisals was also included. The insert is the first in the history of the school paper. A press release from Dispatch staff advisor Pam McCarthy said the students felt the issue needed to be covered in depth, even if it meant more work by doing more interviews and writing than usual. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

BY JOSIE SELLERS COSHOCTON –Supporters of Ridgewood Local Schools could help the district out at their annual eat stand at the fair or at a new booth set up by Jadn Lindig who was trying to raise money for Beyond the Bell. Beyond the Bell is an after school program that is divided into two age groups. One is for students in kindergarten through third grade, which is in the first year of its grant, and the other is for students in fourth through 12th grade, which Lindig is worried about ending. “We have so much,” Lindig said. “There’s Choir Club, RC Club, Arts & Crafts Club, Archery Club and more plus there also is tutoring.” One of her personal favorite Beyond the Bell activities is Chess Club. “I enjoy it so much and it’s cool to do,” Lindig said. She also thinks the Girl Power Club is a great idea. “You learn how to apply makeup and that you don’t have to be covered in it for boys to like you,” Lindig said. “It teaches you a lot about self-esteem.” Lindig, herself was teaching youngsters about healthy eating options with her booth that offered cheese sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, carrots, fruit, mini cheese balls and water. “I wanted to do stuff that wouldn’t make kids sick,” she said. “You can’t ride the rides if you have too much greasy food.” You can learn more about Beyond the Bell by visiting http://www.ridgewood.k12.oh.us/ BeyondtheBell.aspx. grandmother was my friend,” said Blackstone. “She said she used to talk to her every day.” Whenever Frances helped someone down on their luck in the community, she did so with a servant’s heart and was more than happy to help. She was very non-judgmental toward those who would seek her out for help. In addition to having a passion for helping others, Frances also had a passion for music. “Whenever she needed some solace, she would look for the piano,” said Blackstone. “She could even play the spoons and mouth harp. She could do it all by ear.” Frances fell ill on what would have been her 75th wedding anniversary, Oct. 2 and passed away only five days later at the age of 92. “We want to thank the community for their love and support of Frances Carpenter,” said Blackstone. “We were very blessed to have that role model in our lives. COSHOCTON – Coshocton County lost one of its loving community members and former Coshoctonians on Wednesday, Oct. 7 with the passing of Frances Carpenter. “She taught us how to be servants and how to do it with a humble and giving heart,” said Kayleen Blackstone, one of her seven grandchildren. Frances, along with her husband Grover who preceded her in death in 1996, received the Coshoctonian award in 1996. They were the first couple to ever receive the award. They were also the recipients of the 1994 Coshocton Sertuma Club Service to Mankind Award. These awards were definitely well-deserved as Frances was very involved in the community. She was truly a woman of God and believed whole-heartedly in helping her neighbors. She was Social Service Director of the Salvation Army for more than 40 years and held the title of Young People’s Sergeant Major for several of those years. She also led Sunday School, and helped hundreds of local residents both financially and emotionally in their times of distress. Frances was so important to the Coshocton community that Blackstone has been receiving phone calls each day since Frances’ death telling her how much her grandmother changed their lives. “I had this one woman call me and she told me, you’re not going to understand this, but your

Third graders Anthony Cichon and Aidan Stevens-Woolery said Sacred Heart School is a great place to go and that they have made good friends there. “All this week we’ve been doing something fun and different every day,” Stevens-Woolery said. COSHOCTON - Local Bounty Coshocton was awarded a $100,000 USDA Farmers Market Promotion Program grant that will enable Coshocton County’s only year-round farmers market to expand operations. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced funding for USDA programs on Oct. 2 that included the Local Bounty Coshocton grant. “USDA is helping to create economic opportunities for producers, increase access to fresh, healthy food for consumers, and connect rural and urban communities across the country,” Secretary Vilsack said. “Each of the grants announced today targets a unique part of the growing market for local foods.” The USDA awarded a total of 164 Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) grants nationally that are intended to boost affordable access to local, fresh and healthy foods, create opportunities for small and mid-size producers, and benefit the health of all Americans regardless of income levels. Kristi Adelsberger, president of the Local Bounty Coshocton Board of Directors, reflected on the rising trend of local foods. “Americans are becoming increasingly aware of healthy food choices,” she said. “Local Bounty has been at the forefront of the local foods movement connecting local producers and consumers at a single retail site and providing education courses for children and adults that enhance awareness of better nutrition through local foods.” The grant initiative was led by David Baker, president of The Eddington Venture Group, who develops growth strategies for nonprofit and commercial enterprises. “The USDA grant provides Local Bounty essential bridge financing that will help stabilize and expand operations,” he said. “The immediate impacts of USDA funding include increased participation by local producers, wider product selection, expanded hours of operation, and heightened market visibility. Producer participation is expected to double from 30 to 60 which will attract additional customers and maximize local economic impact.” Kristie Henderson, Local Bounty Manager, looks forward to expanding collaboration with producers and consumers. “Local Bounty has a stable base of local clientele from young families to experienced chefs,” she said. “Expanding product selection and increasing store operations from 3 to 6 days a week will drive product supply, customer access, and sales for our participating producers. Funding will also enable us to update our Internet presence to better reach our clients and suppliers.” “Operating fewer hours per week limited consumer access to the local food supply,” Henderson added. “Weekly staples such as fresh milk and eggs were quickly sold out but could not be stocked in greater quantity due to our limited days of operation. Extended hours and product offerings will drive more weekly visits

Fair helps high school music boosters raise money

BY BETH SCOTT

COSHOCTON – One aspect of the Coshocton County Fair that everyone looks forward to every year is the food. Whether you love the French Fries or the sugary elephant ears, each person has that one special fair food they crave every year. Music boosters at each of the three district high schools had a food stand at the Coshocton County Fair, which has become a tradition for not only all three schools, but many fairgoers who visit them each year. “It’s something that the kids look forward to every year,” said Teresa Ott who runs the Coshocton food stand. “The kids have fun and are good hard workers.” The Coshocton food stand uses its money to purchase anything from new musical instruments to new music for the choir and band. It can also be used to purchase awards for the musicians during the end-of-year awards ceremony or pay for new uniforms. Last year, the money went toward a trip taken by the choir. The Coshocton food stand has been around for at least 40 years and people always seem to respond well to it each year. They run 21 shifts with three to seven adults working each shift. The music and band students also come out after school to help. They started the grill up at 6:30 a.m. each day and closed at 10 p.m. The stand serves a variety of food including hamburgers, hot dogs, taco in a bag, chili cheese fries, and their ever-popular Redskin Melt made with sausage and hot pepper cheese. The River View food stand also has special items on their menu that people seem to enjoy – the Double Bear Burger and the Bear Nuggets. “We have kids ask if they’re actually made from bears, and of course we play along and say yes,” said Dee Smith, co-director of the food stand. The money they raise goes into their general fund which in turn is used for trips, instrument repairs, special uniforms, gas expenses, and also helps run the concession stand at the high school. It also goes toward the junior high and elementary school choirs and bands. The River View music boosters also did

another fundraiser at their food stand this year. A small jar was placed by the cashier where people could donate money to the scholarship fund for a River View musician. The organization needs to raise at least $2,000 and a foundation in Coshocton will match their funds. “We have seen a need for it this year,” Smith said. “A lot of people have been very receptive.” Smith said that volunteers are always needed and wants to reach out especially to the alumni of the River View choir or band for their support. “If they are willing to come back and work, we would love to have them,” she said. “We still have some alumni who come back after 30 or 40 years because they enjoy supporting the music boosters.” A group of alums were excited to come back to the fair on Monday. The class of 1966 came to support their alma mater music boosters’ food stand and share some old memories. They hope to make it an annual event. The class was the last class of the Three Rivers School District and the first to graduate from River View High School. The River View food stand was started by Warsaw High School prior to consolidation. The stand used to have a sawdust floor, but now has concrete floors and tables where people can sit and enjoy their meal. “We’re also looking for any old stories or old photos or even old prices that anyone might have,” said Smith. “We’d like to see how prices have gone up or stayed the same over the years.” The River View stand opened the Thursday before the fair so that fair workers could have a place to go and have a nice meal. During the fair, they were open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., depending on the crowd and the weather. Other co-directors of the River View food stand include Toni Trowridge and Nichole Wheeler. The Ridgewood food stand has a long history at the Coshocton County Fair as well. It used to be run every year by a variety of Ridgewood clubs, but then converted entirely to the music boosters. The money raised at the Ridgewood stand

also goes into their general fund to be used to help fund the band competition shows and any trips for the band or choir. They also run a teacher’s shift where the money goes toward the Accelerated Reading program. The stand has seven adults and seven kids working each of the three shifts. “It’s something the kids look forward to every year,” said Charity Lower, who is in her fourth year of being in charge of the stand. “The kids really enjoy it because they come back and work every year.” The Ridgewood food stand serves a variety of food including burgers, hot dogs, ham and Swiss sandwiches, shredded chicken, chicken and noodles, and other food favorites. They were open during the fair from 10:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Many fairgoers chose to recycle

COSHOCTON – Last year, more than 200 pounds of plastics and aluminum was recycled at the Coshocton County Fair. This year that 0019_081215 number decreased to just over 100 pounds, but Jeff Wherley of Coshocton County Recycling and Litter Prevention believes that is mostly due to a Are you currently, or will soon be on Medicare? lower attendance at the fair this year. My name is Jim Karcher. “I don’t think I am a licensed health insurance agent & I would like to it’s because people talk to you about your health care options under Medicare. aren’t using them,” he said. “I think it’s I live in New Philadelphia & can be reached by phone or email. because there aren’t as many people here as (330) 407.4962 • jkarcher1230@roadrunner.com there was last year.” Recycling I am looking forward to working with you. plastic containers and 0005_100715 Ohio Lic. #33862 aluminum bottles has

BY BETH SCOTT been offered to fairgoers at the fair for at least 21 years, maybe longer. There were six recycling bins located throughout the fairgrounds, and Wherley said he would like to have more in the future. “What impresses me the most is when I find milk cartons and oil containers in the bins, which means the vendors are using the containers too,” said Wherley. “They’re too big to fit through the whole in the containers, so they’re taking the time to take the lid off, put their recycling in the container, and then replace the lid. That proves to me that people clearly want to recycle. If you are of the mind to recycle, there’s plenty opportunity to do that.” Statistics show that in the United States, more people recycle than vote. The Coshocton County Recycling and Litter Prevention Office recycles 100 tons of material each year. “It’s easy to do, it’s a positive thing, and it makes people feel like they’re a part of something important,” said Wherley. “And it is important.” Every time someone recycles, even if it’s just an aluminum can, natural resources such as trees, oil, and minerals are saved. Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours. “Every bit that’s in recycling is not going into the landfill,” said Wherley. “We’ve been spoiled in this country because we have so much room. Other countries, they don’t have the room, and they recycle all the time.” Wherley is passionate about recycling and enjoys his job. “The thing I love most about this job is I never walk into a room and have people say, ‘Oh God, it’s you,’” said Wherley. “They say, ‘Oh hey, it’s the recycling guy!’ I have kids and I want them to grow up in as clean and efficient world as possible.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Take Your Pick... and Watch Your Money Grow! 21 months CD CHAMPION Fourteen-year-old Waverly Reidenbach has participated in the Showman of Showmen competition at the Coshocton County Fair since the event started three years ago. This year, the member of the Blue Ribbon Bunnies 4-H Club took home the top prize in the event after showing several species to win the event on Wednesday evening, Oct. 7 at the fair. Reidenbach said the hardest thing to show was “the dairy and the lamb because my dairy got spooked a couple of times and my lamb was a little crazy. This is a great contest. I think it’s great for every species to come together and get to feel what it’s like for everybody else.” To view a photo gallery of the Showman of Showmen contest, visit www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com. Youth leadership class learns from county employees

COSHOCTON - On Sept. 16, the Coshocton County Youth Leadership Class of 2016 experienced its first challenge day. The class had a full morning of visiting several different places around the town. Its first stop was at the courthouse EGBERT annex, where the class learned about county records. The class had a scavenger hunt around the building, which was won by Kenzi Addy and Ian Brinker. The next stop was the county

sheriff department. The class went into the 911 responders’ room and got a glimpse of all that they do for people. Also, Deputy Stone gave a demonstration of what he does with the police dog, Henatta. They also visited the emergency medical services building and the fire station, where they enjoyed getting to look through the ambulance and fire trucks. The class finished its challenge day off at the Richard Downing Airport and got a tour from Bethel Toler, and also met a missionary pilot to Honduras who let the students look at and sit in his private airplane. “A huge thank you to the courthouse workers, the sheriff and deputies, the EMS workers, the firefighters, and airport employees - thank you for making this day possible for the youth leadership class,” said Anna Egbert, a Coshocton

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON BY ANNA EGBERT Christian School student who is part of the class. “I enjoyed learning about and from the many people who work hard to make this county run smoothly. It reminded me that these people are not ones we should take for granted. They work long and hard to make our lives easier, and we should most definitely take the opportunity to thank them whenever we can. Another big thank you goes to Betsy Gosnell, Janette Donaker, and Breanne Smith, who coordinated this day for us. Being apart of Coshocton County Youth Leadership has been a great experience so far, and I’m excited for all that we’ll do throughout the rest of this year.”

Poultry Show goes on without birds POULTRY SHOW The poultry show was held at the Coshocton County Fair on Saturday, Oct. 3. Due to the threat of avian flu, the birds had already been processed and judged and were not present at the fair. Pictured here are Hayden Davis and Emily Raber who were awarded reserve grand champion turkey and grand champion turkey respectively. Both spoke about their time raising their turkeys. “I didn’t do anything differently,” said Raber. “I did the same thing I did every year, just kept the animal healthy. It’s the same as every other year because they’re still being judged.” She was excited when she was announced grand champion. “I was so nervous,” she said. “But I was really excited.” Davis said that he took a few extra precautions while raising his turkey. “I had to have bio security and wash my boots down when I went somewhere.” During the judging, judges were looking for fat in the breasts and wings with no broken bones or blisters and big and firm drumsticks. Kamelid Kushers 4-H members enjoy showing llamas

BY JOSIE SELLERS

COSHOCTON – A different llama and a year of experience helped Allie Mizer achieve success at this year’s llama show. “The one I had last year didn’t want to walk, but this one cooperated,” she said. Mizer is a member of the Kamelid Kushers 4-H Club and this is her second year showing llamas. “I think they (llamas) are really cool,” she said. “I love horses and they are the second biggest thing to horses.”

The llama show was held Oct. 4, at the Coshocton County Fair and Mizer and her llama earned two second places, a first and were named a grand champion. Another winner at the show was Emma Ward who brought home a first place with her llama. “I practiced a lot this year,” she said. Ward also belongs to Kamelid Kushers 4-H Club and this is her second year showing llamas. “My brother has done it for four years, but I was excited to do it too,” she said. “I like doing the obstacles, but I also just like showing them.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON - There’s something special about autumn in Roscoe Village. Perhaps it’s the splendor of the scenery in central Ohio’s rolling hills, the crisp mornings and warm afternoons, and the smoky-sweet scent of homemade apple butter simmering over an open fire that combine to make the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival in Historic Roscoe Village in Coshocton synonymous with fall. Now in its 46th year, the Apple Butter Stirrin’ has attracted crowds of all ages to our restored 1800s canal town to experience the sights, sounds and flavors of the season. The three days of Apple Butter Stirrin’ officially begin on Friday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. with the opening of the craft booth-lined street. The crafters and artisans offer unique handmade items including jewelry, paintings, pottery, home and garden goods, and many other delightful finds. Of course, no stroll through the festival would be complete without sampling the tempting food. Just a few delectable offerings you’ll find include home-made vegetable soup, apple butter burgers, steak sandwiches, sweet potato fries, cinnamon-roasted nuts, and kettle corn. during the festival are the outdoor living demonstrations, wood working, spoon making, throwing pottery, and flintknapping. Roscoe Village is a restored canal town that flourished in the early 1800s as the Ohio and Erie Canal wound its way through Ohio, and many of the original buildings still stand along the original canal bed. Costumed interpreters spin the tales of the early 19th century during a Canal Town Journey tour which is included in the festival admission. A nearby canal boat offers a taste of life on the canal with its horse-drawn rides. On Friday and Saturday evening, the eerie candlelight tour, Spirit of Roscoe, will be offered at 7 p.m. at a cost of $9.95 for adults and $4.95 for students. This autumn tour walks the guests through our historic village while telling the tales of the spirited folk who once made this quaint canal town their home. Reservations are recommended for the candlelight tour. Throughout the weekend, younger visitors can enjoy the kids’ activity area complete with tin punching, various crafts, and photo opportunities. An annual quilt raffle will be held for a chance to win a handmade quilt made by the Roscoe Village volunteer quilters. All the weekend’s events are accented by musical entertainment with performances by traditional dulcimer players, bluegrass bands, gospel singers, and country music artists. The festival runs October 16, 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Crafters and artisans interested in booth space at the festival may print an application from our Web site at www.roscoevillage.com or contact us at 740-622-7644 ext. 20 or 800-877-1830.

Church food pantry hoping to continue to grow COSHOCTON – The Upper Room Assembly & Worship Center has helped hundreds of people each month since opening its food pantry in January and would like to serve even more. “From January to June we served roughly 100 families a month or between three and four hundred individuals, but after partnering with the Mid-Ohio Foodbank (in Columbus) we were able to do so much more with our money,” said Karen Casey, who volunteers with the church’s food pantry. “With purchasing from them we were able to help 248 families last time and well over 600 individuals.” The church had to run its food pantry for six months on its own to prove to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank that it was committed and could finance a food pantry. “We knew the other pantries around here gave away a lot of canned goods and boxed items so we try to get meat and frozen food,” Casey said. “We order (from Mid-Ohio Foodbank) a good deal of beef, chicken and pork and try to get frozen food like breakfast sandwiches. We think people really like that and that it’s been a real blessing in the community.” Those who come to the food pantry will only be asked for their name, address, number of people in their family and their ages and do not have to show proof of income. “When we started all of this I didn’t want to have to turn anybody away,” Casey said. “I want to help everybody. Mid-Ohio does have a

financial eligibility spot on its form, but they said we don’t have to be too strict with it. If someone stands in line we can still give them food. We want to help the disabled, retired, people who lost their jobs and even those who work every day.” The food pantry is currently open on the third Thursday of every month with sign up at 5 p.m. and distribution starting at 5:30 p.m. If the weather is bad, volunteers will open the doors earlier so people don’t have to stand outside. The church also has a produce giveaway the first Thursday of every month with the same starting times. “If we have leftovers we try to get rid of them within 24 hours so the following Friday there is usually someone here at the church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to give them away,” Casey said. “We post details on Facebook, but people also can call the church at 740-610-0082.” The Upper Room Assembly & Worship Center also has an emergency pantry that people are eligible to use once every three months. “If you called and needed help we could get a box or two ready for you and arrange a pick up time,” Casey said. The church has received help with its food pantry from Baker’s IGA, The Dollar Tree and Superior Pizza and would especially like to thank Dave Ianniello. “He (Dave) owns a box truck and allowed us to use it for free at first and now we just pay him a small amount each month to help with the wear and tear of it,” Casey said. The use of his truck has been a huge help to the church. “Without him we would only be able to provide a small fraction of what we do,” said Pastor Stan Braxton. “We are very grateful to Dave for letting us use his vehicle.” He also is very appreciative of his congregation pulling together to get the food pantry started. “For a new church being just over a year old we’ve been able to provide the community with 35,000 pounds of food a month and we did that with limited funds and a hundred percent of the money coming from our congregation,” Braxton said. “Imagine what we could do if the

BY JOSIE SELLERS community started supporting the food pantry as well.” Any monetary donation goes a long way now that the church is purchasing food from the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. “Twenty dollars goes a lot further if we spend it,” Casey said. “A lot of the meat we buy we only pay $.08 a pound for. With $20 we could buy 250 pounds of meat and with $100 we could buy 1,250 pounds of meat.” Individuals get to pick various items from the food pantry depending on the size of their family, but Braxton said on average a family of four will get three to five days worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner food. It’s helpful if you bring your own boxes or bags, but not necessary. The church usually has some spare ones and tries to have volunteers available to help you carry items to your car. “The biggest thing we need right now is to get our own vehicle,” Braxton said. “It’s great to have Dave’s help, but it’s not good to have to rely on someone else.” He said they need about $25,000 to purchase their own box truck and are planning some fundraisers to help make that happen. “Having our own truck would let us go get food more often and give us more flexibility and freedom to do the food pantry more often,” Braxton said. “We don’t just help Coshocton County. We also help the counties that touch us like Licking, Muskingum, Guernsey and Tuscarawas.” In addition to monetary donations for the truck and the food pantry they also encourage more people to attend the food pantry. “We always have some left over,” Casey said. “If we get more people we will just buy more food.” For more on the pantry or to make a donation, call the church at 740-610-0082, and please note that in 2016 the distribution dates will change to the first Wednesday of the month for the food pantry and the third Wednesday of the month for the produce giveaway. CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON - The Ohio-Michigan Chapter of the U.S.S. Intrepid Association had its annual reunion Sept. 18-20 in Coshocton. The group had a chicken supper at Jerry’s Restaurant on Friday evening Sept. 18. There were seven former crewmembers present with their wives/guest for a total of 14 present. Those in attendance enjoyed sitting around and talk about what they did after the navy. On Saturday the group took a canal boat ride on a restored section of the Ohio-Erie Canal. The canal boat is about the size of the liberty boats on the Intrepid. Later that day they met at Raven’s Glenn Winery. Before the evening meal, Tonya, the director of operations, explained how the different kinds of wines were made and bottled. They make 20 different kinds of wine. Before the group eat they said the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. They then had a moment of silence for those who went before them, especially Jim Shaw who was planning on attending, but passed away a couple of weeks before the reunion. The meal at Raven’s Glenn was buffet style and consisted of lasagna, sliced sirloin, roasted redskins and salad and bread sticks. They also gave everyone who wanted one, a taste of wine. There were 14 former crew members present, with guests for a total of 23 people in attendance. B-Division was the most represented. Most were from the 59-64 years. One was from 67-68 years. There was one former officer present from 3-A Div. Anyone who served on the ship, or had a family member who served, is welcome to attend the reunions.

SMASHING Demolition derbies are in John Riehl’s blood. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years,” said the West Lafayette resident. “My Dad did it, my brother did and now me.” Riehl usually competes in about 16 demolition derbies a year and was glad to see the event come back to the Coshocton County Fair. “It’s a thrill to smash cars,” he said. Families enjoy showing Haflingers

BY JOSIE SELLERS AND BETH SCOTT

FAMILY COMPETITION Mother and son Jacque and Johnathan Woodward are pictured waiting in line to show their Haflingers in the outside arena at the Coshocton County Fair on Oct 7. For more photos, visit www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com. BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS

COSHOCTON – The draft horse show on Oct. 7 at the Coshocton County Fair in the outside arena was a family event for some of the contestants. Johnathan Woodward, the 10-year-old son of Jacque Woodward, was right behind his mom

in line to be judged with his horse Wiz Bang. “It’s hard to compete against her, but I like how she has a different horse every time so one time I could win and another time I might not,” he said. Jacque trains horse and said that Johnathan is the third generation of their family to compete in horse competitions. “I love watching the kids and seeing their confidence with showing such a big animal and their sportsmanship,” she said. “It can get pretty competitive at times when we show together, but it’s fun.”

Ben and Sarah Hastings from Red Haw also were showing their Halflinger horses in the same event as the Woodwards. The Hastings explained that the judges look for confirmation, size, and overall movement in the Halflinger show. Their family has been showing Halflinger horses for the past 20 years. They spend their summers going all over the state showing their horses. This year, the Hastings were showing Donnie, Miles, Naveen, and Bart. “Half of the reason we love doing this is just because of the people we show with,” said Ben. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s our hobby.” To get the horses ready to be shown, Ben and Sarah routinely practice with the horses and feed them proper nutrition.
