WIC switching from paper coupons to electronic cards

BY JOSIE SELLERS COSHOCTON – The WIC office is excited to be transitioning its clients from paper coupons to electronic benefit cards. “They are similar, but not the same as food stamp cards,” said Willa Hamersley, director of Coshocton WIC. “The WIC Nutrition Card stores information on a chip. The state WIC office started rolling this out last May or June and has slowly been bringing more counties on board. We just started with this March 23 and the state’s goal is to have everybody on it by the end of July. Right now the paper coupons are still being taken by stores.” WIC clients however, have to wait until their next scheduled appointment to get their new card. “We can put up to four members of one family on a card so you don’t have to carry fists full of coupons around anymore or worry about signing them at the register,” Hamersley said. The benefits clients receive will still be the same and the card will keep them separated by months. When participants receive their card they must create a personal pin number and bring the card back with them to appointments where they are scheduled to receive more food. Like the paper coupons, you will only receive three months of available food items at one time. “That day you will get a list of what foods you are assigned and a beginning balance,” Hamersley said. “You also can get quantities of your assigned foods as you need them. You don’t have to buy several items at one time like you did with the paper coupons.” When you use the card at a store you will need to know your pin number in order to purchase your items and get receipts saying what your beginning balance is, what you’ve spent and your new balance. People are advised to keep their receipts so they always know what is left on their card. “It’s new and people are nervous about it, but really nothing has changed except the way you are getting food,” Hamersley said. “You are still getting the same food in the same quantities. You are just getting it from the store in a different way.” Along with their card, clients receive a little booklet with information that also contains a slot for keeping your card and receipts. “This is a great thing for us to rollout,” Hamersley said. “It does away with a lot of paperwork.” If anyone has questions about the new WIC Nutrition Card or is having problems using it, they are welcome to contact the local WIC office at 740622-2929. APRIL 19TH, 1955 Construction of a $34 million electric generating plant in Coshocton County was to be started by the Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Company late that year on a 500-acre site on the east bank of the Muskingum River opposite Conesville. The project marked one of the most spectacular industrial and financial developments in Coshocton County history, adding to the county’s wealth and income. The initial installation would consist of one 125,000-kilowatt generating unit. The unit was to begin operation in 1957 and the two-year period was to give employment to between 650 and 700 people. A total of 80 to 90 jobs would be created after construction on the unit was completed. The plant would consume approximately 325,000 tons of coal per year. APRIL 20TH, 1965 Coshocton Schools were closed on Monday, but 50 students showed up nonetheless to protest the resignation of Principal Charles T. Merriner. The students gathered at the Walnut Street entrance to the building at 1 p.m. with signs that said, ‘We Want Merriner’. They marched around the sidewalks and then took off on a march through the downtown business area. The students felt that their principal was pressured to resign. Later, the school board rejected Merriner’s resignation during a special school board meeting. Merriner expressed his gratitude to the school board and his students. APRIL 20TH, 1975 It had finally happened! Mad Marshall Jacobs had announced publication of his autobiography and residents of Coshocton were itching to get their very own copy. The 38-page booklet described Jacobs’ highlights in his life including his nationally-publicized wedding atop a flagpole at the county fairgrounds in 1946, when he was kicked off the Licking County courthouse he was scaling, when he spent eight months in the Women’s Reformatory in Marysville, his 36th anniversary of climbing the Coshocton County courthouse, and many others, as well as numerous photographs. The 66-year-old designed the Monticello II, which makes round trips daily in Lake Park. He was born and raised in Prusser Hollow, just three miles south of Coshocton until the Flood of 1913 when his family moved to Conesville where he attended a one-room schoolhouse in the village. APRIL 19TH, 1985 Warsaw would be entertained by a bit of New York talent during the Fanfare Theatre Ensemble’s production of Pinocchio performed as a fundraiser for Kno-Ho-Co Community Action Commission. The audience would be enraptured by the style of the Italian Street Theatre, which was centuries old yet new to the present-day audience. The show would follow Pinocchio from a puppet to the belly of a whale with uplifting songs and rousing dances. The performance would be at Warsaw Elementary and was open to the public. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

Man with autism learns pizza business COSHOCTON – When Mollee Anderson was asked to help a young man who is autistic learn about her family’s pizza business, she jumped at the opportunity. “I feel sometimes people with disabilities are overlooked and not given a chance,” she said. Anderson is going to school to become a registered nurse, but also works at the Coshocton Domino’s, which is owned by her parents Renee and Pat. “I pitched the idea to Dad about helping Tyler who is 20 and from the Dresden area learn about the business and it ended up being a neat experience,” Mollee said. “My parents do a lot to give back to the community and I figured it would also help me with my future nursing career. We started by giving him a tour of the store and showing him little things. We didn’t want to overwhelm him, but when he came back a month later he remembered everything we taught him. It was amazing.”

She was impressed with his desire to learn. “He wanted to know everything,” Mollee said. “He learned how to fold boxes, make pizzas, bread sticks and cheesy bread. The guys even showed him the phone system. His last week here he even worked up front with the customers and did great. On his last day of his internship we told him he could come back any time.” Tyler was only at Domino’s a few months, but he never stopped surprising Mollee. “After about his fifth time here we found out he’s also legally blind,” she said. “He can still see, but it’s foggy. You never would have guessed that though. He’d look at the menu and tell us what he wanted to learn how to do. He was big on teamwork too.” Mollee said she would definitely mentor someone with a disability again and would like to see more businesses do the same. “It helps them get work experience and in the end he also taught our employees a lot,” she said. “Just because someone has a disability that doesn’t mean they can’t do what you and I can.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON – Lake Park got the community started with spring cleaning on April 11, when it held its annual clean up day. “I’ve always enjoyed the park,” said Catherine Howard. “I used to swim here as a child and now that I’m older and semiretired I like to do volunteer work.” Jim Piper also enjoyed volunteering his time at the park. “It’s a beautiful day and a beautiful park,” he said. “I like being able to contribute to the betterment of it.” Piper helped spread mulch near the Lake Park Pavilion with the help of Mayor Steve Mercer. “Lake Park is a shining star of our community,” Mercer said. Both he and Piper were happy to help clean it up after a long winter. “We are giving it a good spit and polish,” Piper said. COSHOCTON – Renovating the Coshocton County Courthouse has long been a dream of Irene Miller. “It’s important to keep these things for our heritage,” she said. “This is the public’s building. Our ancestors built it for us to use and for our children and our heritage.” Miller’s dream is becoming a reality as phase two of the courthouse renovation has been completed on Thursday, April 2. The $222,000 project was contracted to Lepi and Associates for 120 days. Work began in the court room on Dec. 3, 2014. While renovating the balcony in the court room, Lepi and Associates found three small murals painted on the walls. Sculpture and painter Alan Cottrell came to study the murals and found that they were probably created between 1910 and 1930 when Coshocton was known as the Artist Playground of the East. The three murals were not signed by the artist, and were in such a state of disintegration that, after photos were taken of each mural, they were plastered over. Cottrell then recreated the murals in three days. The murals represent the Seal of Coshocton, the Seal of Ohio, and the federal emblem. Another new feature of the court room is several chandeliers that resemble the original gas-lit chandeliers that were once hung 1-800-533-7146 • www.eaglerocktours.com in the court room. two of the court house renovation process. The first stage was completed last summer 2014 when the court house was repainted and new windows were installed. The court house also received a new roof and the clock tower was reconstructed. Phase three is expected to start in the summer of 2016. The outside of the building will receive some additional work including tucking and sanding the brick and touching up the sandstone ornate pediments which are starting to crumble. The total cost of that project is expected to be approximately $200,000. The $222,000 project recently completed in the court room was funded through donations made from the Montgomery Foundation, SABA Trust, Schooler Foundation, and the Coshocton Foundation. Some funds also came from the General Fund and the Special Project Fund. Construction on the Coshocton County Courthouse began in 1873 and was finished in 1875 for a cost of $67,000 and was built by Carpenter and Williams from Meadville, PA. With all the furnishings, the cost was approximately $100,000. This was during the Industrial Age in Ohio when many county courthouses were constructed. “The setting here is absolutely beautiful with the court square,” said Miller. “There’s probably no prettier setting. We should be very proud of what we have here.” A community open house is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1 from 4 – 7 p.m. for the public to view the renovations. RENOVATIONS The Coshocton County Courthouse has been undergoing renovations in its court room since December 2014. Lepi and Associates recently completed the work, which included tearing down the drop ceiling installed in the 1950s and reopening the balcony used by the public during court hearings. When they removed the ceiling, they discovered three small murals, which have been repainted. COSHOCTON - Annin employees got to blow off a little steam Friday afternoon April 10 and it was all for a good cause. April is Autism Awareness Month and to help raise money for it Annin employees were given the opportunity to buy raffle tickets to put a whipped cream pie in the face of supervisors. “This is our busy season,” said Bobbi Parks, who works in the company’s human resources department. “They’ve been putting in a lot of long nine hour days and working Saturdays. We thought this (the fundraiser) would help boost morale and the supervisors and managers were all ok with it.” Parks, however, seemed to get the worst end of the fundraiser. Her hair was pretty much covered in whipped cream by the time the pies were all gone and she had to clean her safety glasses several times. “It’s all in fun,” Parks said. Last year the company raised $5,000 for autism. A portion of the money was donated to the Autism Foundation and the rest was divided between five area schools, which used the money to purchase items to help their autistic students. “Our people here are very giving,” Parks said. WEST LAFAYETTE - If you are looking for an entertaining play that the whole family can enjoy then the Ridgewood High School Drama Department has just the production for you. Ridgewood students will perform “The Music Man” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18 and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, in the high school auditorium. The Ridgewood Music Boosters will host a soup and sandwich lunch at 1:30 p.m. before the matinee. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. Groups of 10 or more also can get tickets for $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. “The Music Man” is about a salesman who comes to a small Midwestern town who isn’t very honest, but ends up falling in love with the local librarian and starts to change his ways. Senior Jacob Panteloukas, who plays Harold Hill, is excited to be ending his years at Ridgewood with this musical. “People know it because it’s a classic,” he said. Evan Youker, who is also a senior and plays Hill’s accomplice Marcellus Washburn, agreed with Panteloukas. “It’s a story people enjoy,” he said. There are more than 50 students involved in the production including some from the middle school and elementary school. “It’s a way for us to pass the torch to them,” said senior Samuel Scott who plays Mayor Shinn. Panteloukas also said its fun to work with the younger students. “It’s cool to have them be a part of this and we also get to shamelessly recruit them to join us,” he said. Danika Brenneman, a junior who plays the librarian Marian Paroo, remembers what it was like to be one of those younger actors. “This is my second time in the show,” she said. “I was in it when I was 8-years-old and now

Habitat for Humanity moves to new location

BY BETH SCOTT

COSHOCTON – Habitat for Humanity Coshocton County has recently moved from their location on Walnut Street to combine with ReStore at 84 Pine Street in Coshocton. “It made more sense for us to all be together,” said Brittleigh Smith, executive director of Habitat for Humanity. “We didn’t see a lot of foot traffic at our location on Walnut Street, so it’s nice to have more foot traffic here.” Volunteers from Hopewell Industry helped Habitat make the move to Pine Street just a couple weeks ago. Habitat’s mission is to eliminate substandard housing in Coshocton County. They have a golf outing fundraiser scheduled for July and had a groundbreaking ceremony for House 15 last weekend. There was also an open house to celebrate the first anniversary of ReStore’s location on Pine Street last Saturday. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Key games for the season: Quality non-conference games with Zanesville, Philo, Maysville, Heath, Indian Valley, and Tusky Valley in addition to a very competitive Inter-Valley Conference slate Overall expectations or goals for the season: We look to be competitive in each and every game, always giving us a chance to win. Overall strengths: We have a nice mixture of veteran and young guys. I think their willingness to compete, their mental toughness, and their closeness as a team are all strengths. Key games for the season: We view all of them as important. We truly are trying to play to the best of our abilities each night as individuals and as a team. We feel like if we can do that consistently, we will have a successful season. The event will be April 18 from 8 a.m. to noon in The John L. and Christine Warner Library and Student Center, Newark campus. The public is invited, and for a donation to “Team Buckeye-Rolling for a Cure” will receive a pancake breakfast including sausage, juice and coffee. All donations will go toward cancer research with 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar through Pelotonia directly funding research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCCJames). Pelotonia is a grassroots bike tour with one goal: to end cancer. Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund lifesaving cancer research. Pelotonia is a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism with a community of people coming together to chase down cancer and defeat it. This year’s Pelotonia will take place Aug. 7 - 9. In its first six rides, Pelotonia has raised $82 million for cancer research with a staggering $21 million being raised in 2014 alone. Organizers are hoping to exceed last year’s record number of participants, which included 7,270 riders and more than 2,500 volunteers from 41 states and five countries. They will participate in routes that range from 25 to 180 miles, starting in Columbus and finishing at one of four destinations. Pancakes for Pelotonia is sponsored by the Newark campus Peloton Team Buckeye-Rolling for a Cure and includes Ohio State faculty, staff, students, friends and family members. CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON NEWARK — Central Ohio Technical College will host its Culinary Science Showcase on Tuesday, April 28 from 7 - 9 p.m. in the John Gilbert Reese Center. Admission is free. Attendants will participate in hands-on cooking demonstrations and topic discussions, tour kitchen facilities, learn about the COTC culinary science program, meet faculty members and current students, and enjoy delicious food created during the event. All prospective students interested in the Culinary Science Technology program or culinary careers are invited to attend this event. “Our showcase presents participants with a hands-on experience because that’s exactly how our program educates its students,” said Matt Russo, Culinary Science instructor. There will be presentations on careers in the industry and detailed information on what Culinary Science has to offer. Currently, a twoyear associate’s degree is available, as well as a newly-implemented one-year certificate with an abridged curriculum. Much more information on both programs will be available at the Culinary Showcase. All who plan to attend may RSVP on the Culinary Science website or by phone at 740-366-9222 by April 23. Central Ohio Technical College is a fully accredited, public college dedicated to providing high quality, accessible programs of technical education in response to current and emerging employment needs, as well as encouraging the professional development of students, staff, faculty, and administrators to assist them in achieving their maximum potential. COTC is the only technical college in Ohio that operates four full-service campus locations: Newark, Coshocton, Knox and Pataskala.

Coshocton Softball Team always willing to go the extra mile CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON Last year’s overall and league records: During the 2014 softball season the Coshocton Lady Redskins had an overall record of 7-15. Eight of the 15 losses were lost by a one-run difference. Coaching staffs’ names: Head Coach Dani Duhamell and Assistant Coaches Jo DeJesu, Justin Duhamell and Toby Gore Key returning players and the impact you expect them to have: The Coshocton Lady Redskins are returning eight letter winners from last year’s team. All eight are considered to be key players on the Lady Redskins’ Varsity roster. Peighton Gore - Sophomore, Pitcher/Utility. 1st Team ECOL, 2nd Eastern District; Ally Stein - Sophomore, Pitcher/ Utility. 2nd Team ECOL, 1st Team Eastern District; Courtney Guthrie Sophomore, Outfield/Second Base. 2nd Team Eastern District; Cassidy Cantrell- Sophomore, Catcher; Amia Woods - Sophomore, Outfield; Caley Ridenbaugh - Sophomore, Outfield/Second Base; Erin Storsin Sophomore, Pitcher/Utility; Kelsey Crown- Sophomore, Third Base. All eight of our returning letter winners have shown a sense of maturity and a sense of pride for this program so far this season. I could not ask for a better set of leaders for this very young, but very talented team. They take the game of softball seriously and are always finding ways to improve themselves. From last season to now, I can see a huge difference in their confidence as individuals and their confidence as a team. I have full faith in all eight of these girls that they will succeed. They are expecting big things from themselves and each other. I am excited to watch them conquer the goals they have set for themselves. They have worked hard to be where they are now and I could not be more proud of them. Key newcomers and the impact you expect them to have: We have many newcomers this year that will also help make an impact including: Bree Newell - Sophomore, Pitcher/Utility; Hailey Myers - Freshman, Utility; Shauna Masters - Freshman, Utility. Bree Newell will be a nice addition to our pitching staff. She also plays well defensively in the field and she does her part at the plate. Bree is a lead by example type of girl. She is quiet, but does exactly what is asked of her and does it with a positive attitude. I look for her to contribute to all aspects of the game. Hailey Myers has shown potential to be a solid defensive player for us. She also has great abilities at the plate. We are looking for Hailey to be a key element in our success in the field. Shauna Masters is a girl that you wish you could clone. She has an outstanding work ethic and sense of determination. She displays this not only on the field, but the classroom as well. She is someone that will be a great role player for us. Overall strengths: As a team we excel in many aspects of the game. For

River View softball returning all but three players CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

Last year’s overall and league records: 11-12 Coaching staffs’ names: Head Coach Bonnie Infante and Assistant Coach Stephanie Snyder and Josh Bowman Key returning players and the impact you expect them to have: We will be returning all but three players from the 2014 season. As a team last year our on base percentage was 0.354 and batting average was 0.282. We look to improve both those numbers this year. Our pitchers are looking to improve their combined ERA that was 3.48 and their strikes to walks ration, which was 2:1. Last year we had 62 errors in the field and we will be looking to decrease that number. Key newcomers and the impact you expect them to have: We have nine new players that are looking to help the team both at the plate and in the field. Overall expectations or goals for the season: We are working hard to improve our knowledge of the game to be better communicators. We are looking forward to a season with many successes and to be a top competitor in the ECOL race. If we continue to do the little things correctly, postseason games will be in our future.

COLUMBUS - As the Chair of the House Education Committee, I want to update my constituents on the status of an important bill. House Bill 7, introduced by my colleague Representative Jim Buchy, clarifies that scores from the first year of all state assessments, including those given by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), cannot be used to determine advancement to the next grade level or the granting of course credit to students in the state of Ohio. Introduced on Jan. 28, the bill has been widely supported among both parties. As such, it has moved quickly through the legislative process. It was passed unanimously in both the House and Senate in less than two months, and was signed by the governor. Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger signed the bill after its passage, marking his first bill signing as the new leader of our chamber. During the previous General Assembly, House Bill 487 gave school administrators the choice to decline using student test results on state

us, a strength has always been our work ethic. These girls will go from sun up to sun down until they get it right. As a former player myself I always wanted to go the extra mile and make myself better and this is something I have passed on to my players and former players. We have a talented pitching staff this year. All four pitchers are sophomores this year and they all have different and unique qualities. Three of our four pitchers have already had a year of varsity softball and they know what is expected of them to become a better pitcher and during this off-season they worked and worked at perfecting their skills. Another strength of ours is the desire to be better than we were yesterday. Our girls are very good listeners and they are eager to learn new tricks and tips to playing the game better. I have been blessed to have a group of girls that are willing to take extra cuts or catch extra balls to make themselves better than they were yesterday. Key games for the season: We treat every game as if it were the biggest game of the year. We are looking to compete in every game we play this season. Overall expectations or goals for the season: Our expectations get higher and higher every year and this season we are looking to improve ourselves every practice and every game. If we as a team are learning one new thing every day during or after a practice or game, we will be alright and we will succeed as a program.

My wife has even gone out a couple of times.” If you would like to find out more about beagle hunts come to the UKC Hunting Beagle Nationals Friday through Sunday, April 1719 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. For information, call 740-545-0984 or 800-3384724. Admission is free for spectators. The event

is hosted by the Coshocton County Beagle Club and sponsored by Nestlé Purina. Twenty-four years of history and tradition make Hunting Beagle Nationals an event of great prestige, and by the end of the weekend, the Overall National Grand Champions in hunt and show will be crowned. UKC Beagle events are designed to simulate an actual hunt as closely as possible, so all dogs entered are truly competition-ready athletes. UKC hunting program events are designed around a family atmosphere, and spectators are always welcome. In accordance with UKC rules and regulations,

Established in 1898, the United Kennel Club is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries.
