ber of Commerce dinner held Friday evening, April 11 at the Lake Park Pavilion. Kathleen Thompson said in her remarks about the couple, “This year’s Coshoctonian recipients are one of the best examples of a team you will ever see. They have been a team for more than 45 years, working together, hand-in-glove, making our community a better place.” The couple currently owns and operates Raven’s Glenn Winery and Italian Restaurant. “She’s come out and played with us and the girls were very impressed with what she did on the field and her personality,” he said. “She will fit in well. We are excited for the next four years.”

Michael was torn between MVNU and Muskingum University, but her parents are very happy she picked Mount Vernon. Her mom and dad, Monica and Fred Michael are both graduates of MVNU. “It’s a very good school and has a good Christian environment, which is important to us,” Monica said.

They also are happy Hannah will get to continue her soccer career.

Hannah is undecided on a major at this time, but is glad soccer will be a part of her college days.

COSHOCTON – Coshocton High School’s loss will be a big gain for Mount Vernon Nazarene University this fall.

Hannah Michael signed her letter of intent to play women’s soccer at MVNU during a special ceremony held April 9, in the high school’s library.

“I like the atmosphere there,” she said. “It’s also close to home and they have a good soccer program.”

Michael played goalie for the Lady Redskins and has been involved in soccer since kindergarten.

“I’m excited to move up in my soccer career, but I’m going to miss the coaches and the team,” she said. “Coach (Matt) Hartley has always encouraged me and pushed me to do my best. He’s the one that got me started as a goalkeeper.”

Hartley had the pleasure of coaching Michael for eight years at various levels of her career.

“She is a really special player and has been a big part of our success, Hartley said. “She doesn’t get the credit that the offensive players get. She actually holds all the school records for goalies.”

Those accomplishments include: Season shutouts record – eight, two times, 2012 and 2013; career saves – 503; saves in a game record - twice with 20; saves in a season – 210 in 2010;

COTC to host second annual High School egg drop competition CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

NEWARK - Central Ohio Technical College prepares to host its Second Annual Egg Drop Competition for junior and senior high school students on April 25 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the John Gilbert Reese Center.

Prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers in both the senior division and junior division. The two first place finishers will receive a $1,000 COTC scholarship and an Apple iPad Mini. The two second place finishers will receive a Pebble Smart Watch. The two third place finishers will receive a Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator and the two fourth place finishers will receive a dozen “golden” eggs. Event sponsors include: Jobes Henderson & Associates, ADR & Associates, Robertson Construction and Weekley Electric, Inc. The objective of the competition is to design a device that will protect a large egg from breaking when it is dropped from a height of approximately 22 feet. Entrants compete to design the device with the lightest weight, the fewest number of parts, and the most accurate drop to the Drop Zone target.

“This will require a bit of mathematical planning from the students,” said Amir Nassirharand, PhD, Engineering Technology Program Director, “This sort of planning is what engineers are expected to do in their everyday careers.”

The competition encourages ingenuity and innovation in high school students who have an interest in engineering, but it is also open to those students who plan on pursuing education outside of engineering after high school. This year’s competition marks the continuation of a successful event that drew over 100 students to compete last year. Interested students can register at www.cotc.edu/eggdrop Central Ohio Technical College is a fully accredited, public college dedicated to providing high quality, accessible programs of technical education in response to current and emerging employment needs, as well as encouraging the professional development of students, staff, faculty, and administrators to assist them in achieving their maximum potential. COSHOCTON – Roscoe Village will offer two Spring Children’s Programs in April. The first program is the Roscoe Kanal Kids where children will have the opportunity to see how youngsters on the canal lived and worked. They’ll experience what it was like to do house boat chores, be a hoggee or a deck hand. Kids will also enjoy playing canal era games, hear the stories of the canal and they may even learn some fun canal songs. Participants will have an opportunity to try on canal era costumes. This program is at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Caldersburg Pearl, Roscoe Village’s stationary canal boat replica. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. in the one-room school house. Join us for this exciting event and become a Roscoe Kanal Kid and enjoy a special treat and fun things to take home. The second event, Peter Rabbit’s Favorite Snacks, takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the exhibit hall. Find out what others see at the first signs of spring. Small groups will go on a scavenger hunt searching for those items that tell us spring has arrived. Enjoy some time learning about bunnies and what they eat; hint: it isn’t just carrots. Have some quality time cuddling a soft bunny. Listen to the tale of Peter Rabbit and the mischief he gets into in Mr. McGregor’s garden. This story was written by Beatrix Potter as a picture letter in 1893. Complete your visit by making up your own salad in a jar.

Project to beautify empty downtown windows COSHOCTON - Frank Pettibone remembers when there was life in the Selby Building on Main Street.

“Back in the day it had the store JJ Newberry,” he said. “There was a lunch counter there, a pet store downstairs and a candy shop that had outrageously good cashews. As a kid I got to experience all that, but it’s been long gone.”

Pettibone is using some of his memories to help the Pomerene Center for the Arts with its Little Social Histories project.

The Pomerene Center recruited a team of community members that includes Pettibone, Proud to serve the people of Coshocton and surrounding communities since 1896!

Lisa Jane Martin, Byron Brenneman, Jacqueline Roman, and Megan Tyhurst to work together to design a large public art piece that tells little social histories of downtown Coshocton in the context of the old and now vacant Selby Building, which is the 400 block of Main Street.

Tyhurst, a freshman at River View High School, is the youngest member of the group.

“I don’t really feel like I’m the youngest,” she said. “I’m included in the group. I think this project is really neat and I’m learning more about Coshocton’s history.”

Roman also is in high school and has enjoyed working with everyone on the team.

“I want to major in art (in college) and thought I should be doing more things to help me with that,” she said. “This project has been a lot of fun and it’s been nice working with people of all different ages and parts of the community.

Their tips and opinions have helped me grow a lot. I really like all of them.”

The group also has learned a lot about comic making during sessions with cartoon/illustration artist Julian Dassai.

“He critics our art and gives us pointers about what to do,” Martin said. “I’ve been learning to see things in black and white because I’m usually a color person and like lots of vibrant colors.”

combined with historic text, old photographs and images and will be enlarged to fill the building’s storefront windows.

“Anne (Cornell from the Pomerene Center) is trying to draw attention to downtown and hopefully we can get this town going again economically,” Pettibone said.

Intended installation in the windows is scheduled to coincide with the Dogwood Festival in May. “There are unfortunately a lot of empty buildings downtown so hopefully this will draw attention to them and help beatify downtown,” Martin said.

The work is funded in part through a National Endowment for the Arts OurTown community development grant.

“Overall, I think it is a fun project that will benefit the community a lot and maybe show other people more about where they live,” Tyhurst said.

Brenneman, who graduated from Coshocton High School and currently attends Otterbein University, also hopes the project enlightens people.

“I remember my grandparents telling me stories about downtown and how vibrant it was,” he said. “When I was growing up it was like death valley. I like the topic of this project and think it’s a really cool way to teach younger people about what Coshocton used to have.”

Roman agreed with Brenneman.

“There is a lot of history in this town,” she said. “A lot of people always think nothing happens in Coshocton, but they don’t realize how much has gone through here and how bustling it use to be. Hopefully this project will help people take more pride in our community and make them start to think about what Coshocton used to be and what they can do to help brighten it up.”

Mike Burr’s OWE class from River View High School donated part of their Thursday morning in Roscoe Village. They helped the Landscape Department prepare the hill behind the canal boat for mowing. The group of students scoured the hillside and filled a truck with branches and sticks. The group also volunteers in Roscoe in the fall when they help with leaf clean-up and they return in December to help the Maintenance Department prepare and set out luminaries for the Candlelighting weekends. April 21st, 1954 A Coshocton High School student was announced as a winner in the state-wide youth leadership contest sponsored by Ohio Elk lodges. Paul E. Slaughter was the editor of the Red and Black, the Coshocton High School newspaper. He would receive a $100 savings bond to be presented to him at a special ceremony in Columbus. Slaughter, along with Margaret Ann Clark of Sacred Heart, were co-winners in the county-wide contest and each received a $50 savings bond. Slaughter’s essay would be submitted to the national youth leadership contest later that spring.

NEWARK - The Ohio State University at Newark will be the location of this year’s fundraiser, “Pancakes for Pelotonia”. The event will be April 19 from 8 a.m. to noon in The John Gilbert Reese Center.

The public is invited and for a donation to “Team Buckeye-Rolling for a Cure” will receive a pancake breakfast including sausage, juice and coffee. All donations will go toward cancer research with 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar through Pelotonia directly funding research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Insti-

tute (OSUCCC-James).

Pelotonia is a grassroots bike tour with one goal: to end cancer. Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research. Pelotonia is a threeday experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment and volunteerism with a community of people coming together to chase down cancer and defeat it. This year’s Pelotonia will take place Aug. 8 - 10.

In its first five rides, Pelotonia has raised $61 million for cancer research with a staggering $19 million being raised in 2013 alone. Organizers are hoping to exceed last year’s record number of participants, which included 6,723 riders and 2,300 volunteers from 41 states and nine countries.

Pancakes for Pelotonia is sponsored by the Newark campus Peloton Team Buckeye-Rolling for a Cure and includes Ohio State faculty, staff, students, friends and family members.

April 19th, 1964 The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum was preparing for their dedicatory open house, which would climax a five-month program of rearrangement and redecoration under the direction of Mrs. Derbyshire and Mrs. Shaw.

The two women had become co-directors of the museum following the death of the former director. The two had assisted in the museum’s reorganization by a number of community-minded citizens. In addition to the permanent collections on display, the open house would feature many other exhibits including paintings by local artists Annette Forsythe and Vivian Williams.

April 17th, 1974 Dr. Lewis Smith, a specialist in internal medicine and head of Coshocton’s cardiac care unit, instructed the Warsaw EMTs on the proper use of the new cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) unit. The unit was purchased due to the combined efforts of the River View FFA and the community. The new unit was more effective than manual methods and could be adjusted for the patient’s size infants through adults. Dr. Smith said the manual CPR was still effective until an emergency squad arrived. The unit took 30 seconds to be operational once opened.

April 21st, 1984 Michele Eichorn, a native of River View, had received congratulations from Prince Phillips, president of the World Wildlife Fund International, for her work for the fund in Hong Kong. She and her husband had lived in Hong Kong for more than two years and Eichorn began volunteering for something to do. Her work involved getting the necessary papers to move endangered animals in and out of Hong Kong to various zoos. The prince congratulated Eichorn for a ball she had planned to raise funds to help conserve the giant panda. She was able to meet the prince at the ball.

Family Fun Day scheduled

COSHOCTON - Family Fun Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. The event is free for all families and will include free games, crafts, pony rides, inflatable toys, and drawings for door prizes. Lunch of hot dogs, chips and pop will be served from noon to 1 p.m.

Included will be informational booths hosted by various agencies. Free table space is available for entities who want to provide community education to families. To reserve a table, contact Anne Randles at 295-7485.

This event is hosted by Job and Family Services and community agencies to support Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is sponsored with a grant of $2,000 that each county receives from the Children’s Trust Fund to support these activities. Rain date for the event is Saturday, May 3.

COSHOCTON - United Way of Coshocton County Board of Control voted to officially close the 2013-2014 campaign having collected over $375,000 towards the $380,000 goal which is 99% of the goal.

The United Way, through donor dollars, supports 19 local non-profit agencies which provided services to over 20,000 Coshocton residents in 2013.

Community Impact Initiatives the United Way of Coshocton supports through grants are the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, FamilyWize prescription assistance, Free tax preparation, Volunteer Solutions, Clean Up Day, and this summer will be launching 2-1-1, the free information and referral hotline. For any questions regarding these programs, contact the United Way office at 622-4567.

For the 2013-2014 campaign, Clow Water Systems was the Corporate Sponsor. Clow has been a strong supporter of the United Way having raised roughly $152,000 over the last five years. They have not only supported the campaigns, but have supported the Dolly Parton free book program as well.

“We found ourselves at a larger-than-normal shortfall despite the generous giving of so many through the Industrial, Retirees, Retail, Professional, Public Employees, Special Gifts, Schools and Agri-business divisions,” said Lyn Mizer, Executive Director. “In that last month, Buckeye Brine offered a matching grant of up to $30,000 and we were able to match almost all of it. With the February Finale through WTNS and a letter solicitation, many new gifts as well as some second time givers came in. On behalf of the Board of Control as well as our Partner Agencies, we thank all of those that gave in the beginning, the middle and the end.”

Summer school-age program hires teacher

The donation was split between three of the local schools (Coshocton, River View and Ridgewood) to assist children with disabilities and a portion was sent to the Autism Awareness foundation. The goal this year is to raise $4,000 so the company can assist additional schools. This year it will be donating to five of the local schools (River View, Coshocton, Ridgewood, Newcomerstown and Hopewell).

With two and half years of teaching experience, Medley was previously employed at The Learning Garden in Coshocton and the YWCA in Westerville. This May, he will graduate from Muskingum University with a degree majoring in religion and a minor in psychology and in history.

COSHOCTON - April 2 was the kick off day at Annin Flagmakers, Ohio for Autism Awareness month. To support and assist with awareness, a “Light It Up Blue” sign is placed on the side of the facility and the front of the facility is lit up at night with blue lights.

Employees are very involved in supporting this cause by wearing blue on Wednesdays throughout the month of April and to assist with raising money for the cause through donations, cookie sales, Autism t-shirt sales and lunches, etc. There are several employees at Annin who have family members with autism.

COSHOCTON – Becky Lowe has sold her pottery in Roscoe Village for years and now she is giving other Ohio artists the opportunity to sell their handmade items at Ohio State of Mind.

“The goal of this store is to have only Ohio made products,” she said.

“I am very passionate about helping other Ohio vendors expand their business.”

Lowe closed her Liberty Lady store in Roscoe Village and last week opened Ohio State of Mind in the old Jackson Township Hall at the other end of Whitewoman Street.

“We have everything from food to art,” she said. “Right now there are close to 30 vendors but we should have around 70 in a couple of months.

There are a lot of wine related items like the stopper that is also a corkscrew and I also have Amish men doing woodworking for me.”

The products all feature quality craftsmanship and professional packaging. Lowe also is using her pottery making skills to add to some of the merchandise.

“We have dipping oils that I’m making trays for and there is soap that I’ll have soap dishes to go with,” she said. “I’m also making jam jars for the jam people. We are trying to integrate products to enhance gift buying.”

Lowe also plans to offer business and corporate gift baskets, holiday specials and use the store’s lower level for her pottery.

Prices on the handcrafted items at Ohio State of Mind range from $2 for candy to hundreds of dollars for bigger items such as furniture and artwork.

Anyone interested in becoming a vendor is welcome to e-mail pictures of their work to becklowe@sbcglobal.net. Lowe will take a look at their work and set up an appointment to talk about becoming a vendor if interested.

“The shape of the state of Ohio is really hot right now so we are looking to anything related to that,” Lowe said.

The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“I want a good variety of vendors,” Lowe said. “We only have one coffee vendor, but we already have five jam people. We may have to start a waiting list, but we will always be changing things and making it different.

COSHOCTON – The last Lenten Lunch of the season was Wednesday, April 9 at the Presbyterian Church. The Presbyterian Church and Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church provided tomato bisque and chicken rice soup, spinach and plain quiche, and desserts. Hinds Jersey Farm provided a variety of cheeses for the luncheon.

Reverend Philip Hunt announced a new Good Friday event sponsored by the Coshocton Ministerial Association, the Cross Walk.

The walk will start at the First Baptist Church on Chestnut Street. The cross will be carried to the Salvation Army, Grace United Methodist Church, and conclude at the Presbyterian Church. There will be a special service at each location. The event begins at noon and will take about an hour.

Heart gave the message and spoke on Pontius Pilate.

In today’s society, Pilate is portrayed as a stern man with little feeling for Jesus.

However, Hritsko shed new light on Pilate and noted he was a man who was only looking for the truth.

“I think that if Pilate would have had a little more time and had known Jesus and had talked to a couple more people, he would have been converted himself,” said Hritsko.

After discussing whether or not to release Barabbas or Jesus, Pilate, against his own conscience, turned Jesus over to be flogged and crucified as the crowd had asked, and released Barabbas, a convicted murderer.

“What are we to choose as the truth and then how are we to live it?” said Hritsko. “We know in our faith what truth is. God lives, not lived, but lives.”

Hritsko closed the service with special music.

“We need to answer the Lord for what He has given us and what He continues to give us,” said Hritsko.

France is now in charge of the program and after attending a conference where he learned other communities who participate in American in Bloom receive government funding, France has asked the commissioners if they would be willing to help fund the program.

“I want to raise our own money by doing something different, but I’d like to get some funding from the government,” said France. “It should be everyone’s goal to make our community look better. I would like the city and the county to contribute. I think we do a really good job.”

France would like Coshocton is Blooming to start making a profit so that it can more effectively fund the program year after year.

“It would be nice to be able to budget and plan like every other entity,” he said.

There is also a cost in bringing the judges to Coshocton for the contest. Application fee is $1,000 and judges must be provided room and board. Coshocton is Blooming also provides meals to the judges during their stay. This year, the judges will be in Coshocton July 7 – 8.

“I’ve had people ask me, ‘Why do we even need to have the judges here?’” said France.

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met with Judge Tim France, president of Coshocton is Blooming, to discuss funding options. Coshocton is Blooming is a program that competes each year in the national America in Bloom contest. Each year for the past five years, volunteer judges from America in Bloom have come to Coshocton to rate the community on six different categories: floral displays, landscape areas, urban forestry, environmental, heritage preservation, and overall impression.

The commissioners agreed to give France the 2013 records, but had some doubts about making an annual donation to the program.

“If we give money to this program, I could see every organization coming to us and wanting money,” said Commissioner Curtis Lee. “There are years when personnel have to be cut because of lack of funds. I just can’t see making an annual donation.”

No decisions were made during the meeting.

Commissioner Gary Fischer was not present at the meeting and Commissioner Dane Shryock and Lee agreed that they would need to discuss it over with Fischer when he returned.

During the meeting, the commissioners also signed a proclamation for Coshocton County 4-H week which was April 6 – 12. Shryock and Lee presented the proclamation to Hannah Roush, program assistant, 4-H Youth Development, and Erica Wiggins, 4-H member.

The commissioners also approved: - A motion to sign a proclamation declaring April 6 – 12, 2014 as Coshocton County 4-H Week in Coshocton County and urge the people of this community to take advantage of the opportunity to become more aware of this special program - A motion to sign a request for payment and status of funds report for grant B-C-13-1AP-1 in the amount of $18,000 as requested by John Cleek, CDC of Ohio - A motion granting permission to Coshocton Town Centre Association to use the Court Square on Aug. 7, 8, 9, 10, 2014 for the Canal Festival Celebration from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

COSHOCON - By now our committee hopes that you recognize the “CIB” as a shortcut for ‘Coshocton is Blooming’. Our goal is to ‘plant pride’ in Coshocton.

We are re-organizing under the leadership of Tim France, with an ecletic group of people getting organized into workable committees. A big project we are helping with is the street trees in town: keeping trees to increase our green space, removing dead and dying trees, and planting trees when we are able to. We are also working to decrease our ‘foot print’ by increasing awareness with recycling efforts.

One of the more visible ways we plant pride is through the display of flower plantings along Main Street. Each year CIB has worked from a theme, and this year’s theme is: ‘Let’s Plant Coshocton Red!’. By the end of May, there will be a blaze of red color hanging from the baskets and bursting from the planters.

The only way that all these projects can happen is with the support from the public, and we have had great responses in the years since we have formed CIB. In the next couple of weeks, we will begin our drive for sponsorships. We will be reaching some folks by letter or those reading about CIB. The committee hopes that you continue to support Coshocton is Blooming and make Coshocton a place where we ‘plant pride, and people visitng can see that we have pride!

OSU Extension holds recognition luncheon COSHOCTON – The passion community members feel for OSU Extension was clearly visible on the faces of the owners of The Garden Patch Greenhouse.

Deb Gaumer and Kristy Leindecker were all smiles when they were presented with the Friend of Extension Award at the April 11 Coshocton County OSU Extension Advisory Committee Recognition Luncheon.

“Without each and every one of you we would not be here,” Gaumer said. “We love this city, we love this county and we love working with everyone in this room.”

She and Leindecker are true advocates of the OSU Extension mission, “Engaging people to strengthen their lives and communities through research-based educational programming.”

“We are all about education,” Leindecker said. “Everyone who comes to our greenhouse knows we want them to succeed. If we can’t provide them with the information they need, we will send them to the people who can.”

Proclamation Awards also were presented to Kelly Miller and Alice Moore.

Miller was raised on a farm in Coshocton County and 4-H was a family affair for her.

Today she is still active in farming and helps other farmers through her job at Farm Credit Mid-America.

Moore was humbled by the award.

“A lot of you do similar work, but I must say I enjoyed the time I spent doing the things I did,” she said.

During the lunch, LePage also took time to recognize the other OSU Extension Advisory Committee Members: Teresa Bradford, Mike Cichon, Judy Finlay, Mark Fortune, Elisha Hamric, Chad Miller, Marissa Mullett, Jason Pendola, Bambi Zinkon and Coshocton County Commissioners Gary Fischer, D. Curtis Lee and Dane Shryock, who serve as ex-officio members.

Adams, who serves as the OSU Extension Coshocton County Educator, Agriculture & Natural Resources County Director, also informed those in attendance that OSU Extension will celebrate its 100th birthday in May. Plans are being made for highlights of the organization’s history to be shared through local media outlets and a display at the Coshocton Public Library and Whit’s also will feature a special OSU Extension sundae this summer.

Adams was especially excited to share that local OSU Extension office is receiving a $325,000 gift from the Robert M. Thomas Trust.

Thomas passed away in 2007. Before his death he worked for 37 years at Edmont’s, was active on various community boards and instrumental in establishing Leadership Coshocton County. He also was the 1994 recipient of the Coshoctonian Award.

“We are grateful for his generosity,” Adams said. “This will help us expand our programming.”

The local OSU Extension office deals with 4-H youth development, food and nutrition education and agriculture and natural resources education. A small portion of funding for these programs comes from federal and state money, but most of it is generated from a levy that is up for renewal on the November 2014 ballot.

“I thank all of you for your support of OSU Extension and hope you will spread the word about our levy in November,” said Dr. Danielle Ellis, co-chairs of the extension levy renewal committee.

COSHOCTON – National Crime Victims’ Rights Week was celebrated with a luncheon to honor those who work in the field.

The program was held April 10 at The Presbyterian Church and after enjoying a lunch provided by Mike Abood, those in attendance listened to a program on elder abuse by Ursel McElroy Drake, M.A., who serves as the deputy director of education and policy for the Ohio Attorney General’s Crime Victim Section.

“I’ve had the opportunity to travel around Ohio and I’m very proud to see community’s celebrating this week,” she said. “It’s an opportunity for us to look back on what we’ve already established for crime victims and discuss how we can continue to help.”

Drake has 20 years of experience working in the interest of older victims and her presentation focused on the problem of elder abuse.

“It can happen to anyone and is the most under reported crime in America,” she said.

“It’s important that we understand that there are people in our community suffering abuse at the hands of their caregivers and that the community create opportunities to discuss this issue so we can figure out how to provide them the assistance that they need.”

During the lunch, several community members and organizations were applauded for the assistance that they provide to victims of crime.

Nicole Hostetler was honored for her years of service to First Step, especially the time she spent as the agencies legal advocate. The Animal Medical Surgical Center and Cathrine Darr were thanked for donations made to First Step’s pet shelter and Don Dixon was celebrated for the maintenance work he did on First Step’s shelter.

United Way of Coshocton County also was presented with an award for the many years it has supported First Step.

A Lifetime Achievement Award also was presented during the lunch and Vickie Laudick of First Step had the honor of giving it to Debbie Wallace.

“She is very dear to me and has supported me in the ups and downs of both my personal and professional life,” Laudick said. “When we first tried to start First Step we were presented with a lot of barriers, but she helped me and encouraged me during a time when I didn’t have a lot of self-esteem or believe in my abilities.”

Wallace was a founding board member of First Step.

“Kudos to all of you for the work you do every day,” she said. “You do not get enough appreciation for what you do. Thank you for your work.”

Wallace also encouraged those in attendance to support others who have a dream to make a difference in the community.

“First Step started with Vickie and she now employs 15 people,” Wallace said. “I’m also sure that there are women who wouldn’t be alive

JA Titan Challenge participants from River View High School included Ginger Reiss, Coshocton Career Center; Amy Jo Johnson, Emily Barnett, Cole Parks, Jayden Kelley, Roger Nethers, and Matt Novak, General Electric. Each team of students is paired with a mentor from the local business community who lends their expertise during the first rounds of the competition. JA Titan Challenge uses software from the JA Titan High School Program to allow students to compete against one another as CEO’s of simulated companies. Players plan and execute each aspect of a fictional company’s strategy: price, production, marketing, capital investment, and R&D. An index then ranks each company’s performance to determine the winning team. This past month, RVHS participants participated in the Challenge at The University of Akron, Polsky Building. Coshoctonian Award Speech for 2014 Editor’s Note: Following is the entire 2014 Coshoctonian Award speech as presented by Kathleen Thompson at the 32nd annual Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce Chamber Dinner held on Friday evening, Apr. 11 at the Lake Park Pavilion. The Beacon is grateful for this contribution. Robert and Renee Guilliams of Raven’s Glenn Winery & Italian Restaurant received the award.

I

t has been pointed out that there is no letter “I” in the word “TEAM,” and this year’s Coshoctonian recipients – and yes, for the just the third time in the history of the award, there are two of them – are one of the best examples of a team you will ever see. They have been a team for more than 45 years, working together, handin-glove, making our community a better place.

It has also been said that we should “bloom where we are planted,” and our recipients have certainly done that. Despite short stints years ago of living in different communities, they always came back to Coshocton and it is here that they built their lives.

A couple that has always shied from the limelight, they have supported countless organizations in the community, while no one knew except those involved. Their generosity, while quietly conducted, has been enormous and continuous.

Our recipients were high school sweethearts, tying the knot not long after graduating from high school. Their senior yearbook shows them holding hands in the hallway. Two children followed, a boy and a girl, and the little family began a journey that took them from humble beginnings to a variety of business ventures.

One word that describes our husband-recipient – and was used by everyone I talked to – is that he is a “planner.” As a boy, he and his best friend acquired some lumber and decided to build a tree house. His friend was gung-ho to get started on the construction, but our recipient first insisted that they needed plans, and he drew them up himself. That well-constructed tree house provided years of enjoyment to many youth in eastern Coshocton County.

Our recipient-husband developed an early love of aviation, and when he was about 12, figured out how much money it would cost to take an airplane ride. He and his buddy saved up the money and on the appointed day, took off on their bikes from West Lafayette to near Plainfield to the then-Porteus airport. They presented their money to Mr. Porteus who duly took them on a plane ride. None of the parents involved ever knew about the bike or plane ride that day.

Our recipient-husband played many seasons of Little League baseball, as his father was a coach.

Plagued by a bad hip, he had surgery to put in a pin, after which he played high school football for Ridgewood.

Our wife-recipient had quite a sense of fun,

and in elementary school, she and her best friend would go down to the creek behind Fresno school and play “horsey” with the boys -- that is, each girl would sit on the shoulders of a boy and the boys would race, while the girls grabbed at one another in an attempt to knock the other off the boy’s shoulders. Now, that is not the end of her “horsey” days, but as Robin Coffman would say, “more about that later.”

Our recipient-husband grew up in the nursing home business, but wasn’t sure that is where he wanted to build his career. After high school he had a brief stint with electronics school, thought he might start a drywall business, and even considered going into the Ohio State Highway Patrol, but was turned down because he was too short.

In 1987, our recipients purchased two facilities that had been operated as a geriatric “rest homes” since the 1940’s. Our recipients had these facilities licensed and certified as homes for the developmentally disabled and were operated by our recipients until 1981, at which time they purchased a third facility on Kirk Street in West Lafayette. The family made their home on the second floor of the residence, and the first floor became a group home for five individuals who functioned on a semi-independent basis.

Our recipients were asked to run the old County Home on County Road 16, which they did and actually resided there for a time. If any of you are old enough to remember it, the county home was a spooky, Gothic-looking edifice.

However, their son enjoyed his time there as he recalls he had “lots of grandmas and grandpas.”

The County Home residents were a mixed bag of individuals, many of whom presented significant challenges. Some were simply down on their luck, others had varying degrees of mental illness, substance abuse or other problems. Our recipients treated each with dignity and compassion, and each resident had a job to do. The residents grew their own food and kept chickens and cattle for meat.

When our recipients initially arrived at the facility, it became apparent that there were cows, but a bull was needed for breeding. Our husband-recipient, ever the planner, took great pains to locate a prize bull and made all the arrangements for it to be delivered from a truck into a corral at the county home. All went well until the bull got spooked, bolted over the fence and ran away.

Something had to be done, and our recipient spent several nights out on horseback in the CR 16 area with a flashlight looking for this bull.

His ever-practical wife suggested that if an enticing cow might be tethered in the field, the bull might be inclined to return for romance. It worked, and back came the bull. The problem was - what now? Our recipient had obtained a tranquilizing gun from the Sheriff’s Dept. and ordered his faithful buddy to distract the bull by shining the flashlight into its eyes while our re-

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON cipient said he would tranquilize the animal. All went smoothly until when our recipient raised the gun to fire, the bull turned its head, and the tranquilizer, intended for the animal’s flanks, hit its nose. Now there was an angry bull, and there is much more to the story, including transporting its finally tranquilized body back across CR 16 and pouring water on its head to revive it from the tranquilization. Sometimes the “plan” takes a different course.

In 1985 another piece of the “plan” was put in place with the construction of Dewhurst, a 32bed Intermediate Care Facility serving the more severely mentally-disabled population of our community.

The couple helped get the old County Home facility razed and a new, modern building erected on the property. In 1983, the County Commissioners closed the County Home and leased the facility to our recipients where it was operated as a traditional nursing facility known as College Park Nursing Home.

In a number of cases residents of the nursing home had no family to even transport them to the facility. Our recipient-wife would step in as a substitute “family” for the individual and actually go to their homes to help them pack their belongings and transport them to their new home.

This she did with great compassion.

Always looking to fulfill a need in the community, in 1994, our recipients designed and created Windsorwood Place, an assisted living community, with independent living arrangements with needed supports such as monitoring by licensed nurses, home-cooked meals and social and recreational programs. Many communities our size have nothing like Windsorwood to offer their senior populations.

Later Covington Square was added, with independent apartments for seniors who need little assistance, but who are ready to downsize and leave behind the maintenance of their home and lawn. These apartments on Brown’s Lane have become very popular and always have a waiting list.

In 1995 College Park entered the field of home health care, establishing this service to provide health care needs while clients were able to remain as independent as possible in a familiar home environment.

In early 1996, two more facilities were opened under the College Park banner. Remington Square and Byron Court were put into service as eight-bed facilities for the mentally disabled. These facilities offered a small, homelike environment in which residents lived and worked much like a family unit.

In the late 1990’s, our recipients, who had observed and experienced the enormous changes in the field of health care, began to re-focus their plans for the future as they looked toward retirement. Windsorwood Place was sold and administration of College Park Home Care and

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 22 to go to a restaurant. The lovely and popular facility that draws visitors from all parts of the state and beyond has answered that question.

The business has doubled, tripled, quadrupled, and is now one of the top five wine producers in the state of Ohio. A winery and restaurant -- not exactly the slow-paced life that many retirees consider.

In the past few years, the couple has stepped a bit away from the business, but even in retirement, they manage to stay active. Our recipient-wife has a menagerie of animals she takes care of - miniature donkeys, llamas, chickens and, of course, horses. And her husband, with the encouragement of musician Dan Barnes, has taught himself to play the piano.

And that little boy who saved up enough money for an airplane ride, has continued his love of aviation all his life - he has owned multiple planes through the years, including a Steerman bi-plane. But the apple of his eye is the Texan 6 – T-6, WWII trainer plane that was displayed at last year’s air show. He served on the Coshocton County Regional Airport Authority and has been described by a close friend as an “extraordinary pilot” – able to do formation flying, acrobatics, barrel rolls and such – his friend describes him as “meticulous in his flying – a risk-taker but not a daredevil.” And he is currently in the process of building a plane himself.

And yet, while considering themselves retired, they remain active in the community, with our recipient-husband serving on the Coshocton Port Authority and his wife, an active member of the Convention & Visitors’ Bureau. And they

continue to be the quiet supporters of the West Lafayette Fire Department and countless other projects, organizations and causes in our community.

The couple’s son said that his father told him he would give his son three things: the ability to tell right from wrong, a good work ethic, and an opportunity. His mother told him to “do things for the right reason and they will come back and bless you.”

Tonight’s award, as we know, is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce -- commerce, trade, business. Our recipients have surely provided this for the community, as well as employment. One of their long-time employees states that “nearly everyone in the county has worked for them at some point.” She added, “You couldn’t work for better people - honest, straight-forward and always willing to listen to employees, especially when they had an idea about how to do something better or more efficiently.

Putting all of this together leads to only one conclusion, that our recipients are more than worthy of receiving the Coshoctonian Award.

And, always a team. Not all married couples could spend both their work and their leisure time together, but our couple has, with mutual respect, love, and support for one another for nearly half a century.

I am proud to present the 2014 Coshoctonian Award to Robert and Renee Guilliams!

Covington Square moved to our recipient-wife’s brother, who along with his wife, ultimately purchased the business.

Now, a few years earlier, our recipients, who had been living in the city of Coshocton, would visit their son at his rural home. Their son recalls on four separate visits, his parents remarked how quiet it was in the country. Then one day the couple asked their son if he would mind if they bought a farm just down the road in Progressive Valley. The couple moved to the country where our recipient-wife fulfilled a dream of having a place to keep horses. Never one to enter any venture lightly, she acquired 20 horses in two years and traveled the United States showing them, including some top Appaloosas.

Since the horses only occupied a small portion of the property, our recipient-husband joked that he should try to grow some crops that would subsidize the cost of his wife’s horse hobby.

Ever the planner, he brought in experts to analyze the soil to see what might be grown there.

He was told that the viability of the soil did not look promising for most crops but it might be well-suited for grapes. Our recipient called up his good friend up the road, who just happened to own a winery, and the couple’s next business was born.

Initially they planned to have a small “boutique” winery, but the challenge was there, and before long they purchased property from Larry Kobel and Raven’s Glenn was born, opening in 2004. Early on, skeptics in the community wondered why anyone would drive “all that way”

Klein previously operated Susan’s Footwear and Fashions in two different locations in the Downtowner Plaza and also on Main Street for a time. She closed the business for several years, but when her husband unexpectedly passed away, she decided it was time to make a change.

“I’ve made a complete circle,” she said. “I started here (in the Plaza) and local people said they missed my store.”

FRAZEYSBURG - Jim Tucker of Tucker Packing in Marshallville, will serve as the president of the Ohio Association of Meat Processors (OAMP) for the upcoming year. Tucker was elected to continue his term of the office at the recently held OAMP Convention in Columbus, on March 21-22.

Joseph R. Tebben was born in Columbus, Ohio, and has lived in Newark, Ohio, since 1971.

He earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, an M.A. in Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in Classics from The Ohio State University. He retired as professor emeritus from The Ohio State University after 39 years of teaching Greek and Latin, and courses that included Greek and Roman construction and architecture.

COSHOCTON - For only the third time in history, a husband and wife team won the Coshoctonian Award.

“They are the best example of a team,” said Kathy Thompson. “They support countless organizations in the community and no one knows it except those involved.”

Thompson had the pleasure of presenting Robert and Renee Guilliams with the Coshoctonian Award during the annual Chamber Dinner.

The dinner was held April 11, at the Lake Park Pavilion and is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Coshocton County’s people and businesses.

The Guilliams’ are high school sweethearts who have worked together on many great business ventures, including Raven’s Glenn Winery.

“What an incredible honor it is to receive this award,” Robert said. “In 1962 I met my best friend, wife and business partner and for that I will always be grateful. I also try to always give recognition were it is due so I also want to applaud our helpers here today.”

Raven’s Glenn provided wine for the dinner.

“My fifth grade teacher told me that one day I would be called upon to say a few words in front of people and that I should be sure to thank those who deserve the credit,” Bob said.

The Guilliams’ also have had the pleasure of getting family involved in their business.

“Our son Beau has turned into an incredible wine maker,” Robert said. “All the kids though have grown up learning about the work and commitment it takes to run a family business.”

Renee was very surprised by the award.

“It’s an honor and very humbling,” she said.

Renee and Robert also both feel truly lucky to be included on the list of names who have received the Coshoctonian Award in the past.

“Tom Leech has especially been a mentor to us,” Robert said. “People like him (and the other winners) have the values that Renee and I try to follow.”

During the dinner the passing of several Coshoctonian winners was recognized. Especially missing from this year’s dinner was Robin Coffman, who was known for delivering the speech naming the winner of the award.

“It should be him standing up here, not me, but I will try to do the speech justice,” said Thompson, who took his place this year.

Several other awards also were presented during the dinner. The Coshocton County Employee of the Year Award, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club, went to Megan Philabaum who works for First Step. Phil Hunt, president of Rotary Club, had the pleasure of giving Philabaum her award and sharing her nomination form with those in attendance.

“She has been a dedicated employee for seven and a half years,” said Hunt. “She manages the day to day operations of the office, coordinates fundraisers and manages state and federal grants. She has grown as an individual and in the work place. This is not just a job for her. She believes in our mission.”

Philabaum was completely surprised by the award.

“This is awesome,” she said. “I’m very pleased. “My co-workers are the best.”

Dean’s Jewelry also was honored for its dedication to the community and its employees.

“They are the jewel in the crown of our downtown business district,” said Brad Fuller, president of the Kiwanis Club, sponsor of the Small Business of the Year Award. “Dean’s treats its employees like family in hopes that they will do the same for the customers.”

They also offer their employees health and other benefits and donate hundreds of dollars each month to nonprofit organizations through their watch battery program.

NEWARK - The University Chorale at the Ohio State University at Newark will present a varied program of choral works at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 18, in Founders Hall Auditorium at the Ohio State Newark campus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The University Chorale is directed by Paul Sanders, Associate Dean and Professor of Music Education at Ohio State Newark, with piano accompaniment by Jackie Dawson. Participation in the choral music program is open to students, staff and faculty from Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College, along with community members.

COSHOCTON - As the 2014 season is off and running, Coshocton High School tennis coach Kevin Kittell’s inclination leads him to believe that things will once again turn out well.

In his 14th season at the helm, Kittell will be guiding a team that compiled a 15-3 overall record last year, including a 10-2 mark in East Central Ohio League play. Along with the accomplishments of the team, the squad also hopes to build upon its individual achievements.

“It is very exciting to return a very successful, young team from last year,” said Kittell. “It should be a great season. I feel we stand a very good chance to capture league honors and hope that we can again represent our community at the state tournament.”

Leading the cast of returning players is singles player Jim Magness, who reached the Division II state tournament before falling to Matt Brumbaugh of Milton-Union in the first round, 6-0, 6-2. A junior, he recorded a stellar season record of 26 wins against just five losses.

Also returning is Jacob Blank – the team’s lone senior – and juniors Thomas Gauerke, Mitchell Milliken, Sam Magness, Cameron Wiandt and Brian Rogers. Sam Magness is recovering from an injury and missed most of last season.

“Returning nearly last year’s entire core, we expect to continue our success in both league competition and tournament play,” Kittell said.

“I feel we can legitimately advance three to five players to the district tournament.

Although officially entered as a boys’ team with the Ohio High School Athletic Association, several ladies are on the roster, including juniors Emily Hartley, Madeline Hire, Katie Tupper and Krishna Patel and sophomores Mariah Kittell, Chloe Brown, Raven Durben and Pranav Kotla.

In addition, exchange students Ula Chodun and Marina Fernandez will by vying for playing positions.

The lone player lost to graduation was Emily Simpson.

The Magness brothers and Wiandt are expected to play singles during the regular season. Gauerke and Milliken as well as Blank and Hartley likely will team up in doubles.

Upon conclusion of the regular season, the Redskins will battle in the Division II sectional tournament the week of May 12-17.

“Our goal is to stay focused on what’s right in front of us . . . always having a long-range goal but striving to accomplish it one day at a time,” Kittell added.

Young CHS baseball team focused on the present

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton High School baseball team of 2014 may somewhat resemble a revolving door.

Six players from last year’s 16-13 team have graduated, but six return as they attempt to atone for a biting sectional tournament loss to Ridgewood that ended the 2013 campaign.

“Among the six lettermen we lost included most of our innings on the mound,” said Loomis, who is in his sixth year as head coach. “Along with the six we return, we have a very talented group of underclassmen.”

Those underclassmen compiled a 17-win season at the junior varsity level.

“Our season depends on how our young arms will fare in varsity baseball and how we mentally handle the grind of varsity baseball and a very tough league and non-league schedule,’ Loomis added.

Included in the list of returning lettermen are seniors Isaiah Jackson, James Johnson and Dan Aronhalt, junior Gavin Gray, and sophomores Conner Roahrig and Talon Babcock.

Anchoring the outfield will be Jackson and Johnson while Aronhalt, Gray, Roahrig and Babcock will rotate between infield positions and pitching.

Juniors are Joe Batchelor, Jake Glasure, Damon Miller and Logan Walters Sophomores are Deryk Bowman, Conner Roahrig, Logan Hough, Alex McPeak, Talon Babcock and Hunter Haas.

Loomis said the inclusion of Batchelor in the outfield, Haas as a utility player, McPeak as a second baseman and pitcher have helped solidify the lineup while freshman Andrew Mason will handle the majority of the catching.

Glasure will see action at first base, Miller in the outfield, Walters at outfield and pitcher, Bowman will pitch and play both outfield and infield, Roahrig and Hough both play infield and pitcher while Babcock plays first, third and pitches.

Loomis is proud of the fact that there are 30 players in the program, 22 are freshmen.

“We look to compete day in and day out with a young and talented roster,” said Loomis.

“The first step in building a successful program is getting kids out to play. Right now, we’ve got a lot of great athletes that play baseball and that know how to win, which bodes well now and in the future.”

Graduates include pitchers Dyson Bowman, Christian Osborn, Hayden Cantrell and J.T. Rizer.

The Coshocton High School softball team is learning early on how much difference one season can make.

Last year, the Lady Redskins finished with a 1-24 records and were ousted from tournament play in their first sectional tournament game.

However, two games into the 2014 season, they have already doubled their win total.

They opened the season by beating Buckeye Trail 7-1 and followed it up with a 9-0 win over Conotton Valley.

“This season is a learning year for us,” Duhamel said. “We have a very young team but our outlook on the season is a great one. Our goal is to get better every game and grow as a team.”

Helping lead the team development are a group of three seniors and one junior while the balance of the squad consists of 11 promising freshmen players.

Among the seniors is Caley Shaw who will start at shortstop but could also see playing time as catcher. Kayla Selders will play first base while Becky Bookless will play third.

“I couldn’t ask for a better group of seniors to lead this young team,” Duhamel said. “I have been with these three girls since they were sophomores and it has been a pleasure to watch them grow both as players as well as individuals. They provide experience to our very young team and they prove a strong senior leadership.”

The lone junior is Keely Misener.

Freshmen include Olivia Ward, Courtney Guthrie, Cassidy Cantrell, Ally Stein, Peighton Gore, Peyton Taylor, Amia Woods, Erin Storsin, Caley Ridenbaugh, Kelsey Crown and Kelsie Roberts.

The only loss through graduation was shortstop Julia Kittell.

“We are expecting big things from our underclassmen. They are all eager to learn and experience varsity softball. They are ready to show what they can do,” Duhamel said. “Our biggest challenge will be our age. We are very young and we will experience growing pains along the way but we are ready to learn and see what this season has in store for us.”

Gore and Stein will both see time on the mound while the rest of the first-year players will be asked to demonstrate their versatility as they fill in around the outfield and infield.

“We have not established a set lineup at this point,” Duhamel said.

“We are exploring our best options and are looking to see how we can develop the best team chemistry. All of our girls have something special to offer so we are looking for big things from this team.”

Assisting Duhamel is Jo deJesu.

“Our league is very strong and we are looking to compete and develop as a team,” Duhamel added. “These girls are looking to change the program and how it is perceived by others. I can’t stress enough how excited and optimistic I am about this season.”

WARSAW - With a young but talented team, River View High School baseball coach Jesse Smoulder faces some challenges for the 2014 season.

“We feel like we have a lot of talent, but it is unproven at the varsity level,” said Smoulder. “We feel confident that if we play to our potential we will do well.”

This being Smoulder’s third season at the helm, he is coming off a year that ended with an even .500 record (13-13) and will try to improve on that mark with a roster consisting of four seniors, one junior and seven sophomores.

Among the senior class are Zach Hagans, Brodie Lanham and Corey Johnson and Jake Matthews.

Hagans will do the majority of the catching while Matthews will play right field, Lanham third or second base and Johnson will be at first as well as pitch. Outfielder Dylan Watters is the lone junior on the squad.

Sophomores are Josh Bigrigg, Casey Turnbull, Bryar Cox, Adam Croup, Trevor Wine, Dusty Erwin and Jonathan Helmick.

The seven sophomores provide versatility on the defensive side and the Black Bears have tremendous depth in the pitching ranks with Bigrigg, Turnbull, Croup, Wine, Erwin and Helmick all able to toe the rubber.

Cox will play an outfield position while Helmick will see action at third, Erwin at first, Wine at first and third, Croup at first and right field, Turnbull at shortstop and Bigrigg at second base. Croup is also a capable back-up to Hagans.

“This is a talented group that had some success at the junior varsity level last year,” said Smoulder. “They are confident and aggressive, but are also willing to take some coaching in order to try and get better.”

Key losses to graduation were John Brillhart and Josh Knight.

“We acknowledge that we play a difficult schedule in a difficult league and a highly competitive sectional,” Smoulder said. “That being said, we feel confident that if we play to our potential, we will do well.”

Smoulder compiled a 33-21 record over his first two years. Assisting him are Mike Burr, Adam Wagner, Todd Liberatore, Dustin Kent and Ryan Hendershot.

“If we focus on the things we can control, it will be a good year for us,” Smoulder said.

Lady Bears experiencing early-season success

WARSAW - In her second year as head coach of the River View High School softball team, Sarah Lindsey has seen both sides of the spectrum.

“We are young but determined,” said Lindsey, who guided the Lady Bears to the regional tournament and a 23-4 records in her first season. “We don’t have a lot of varsity experience but we expect to get better every game.”

Perhaps the one player who doesn’t fit the billing as a young player is senior Sami Ringwalt. Now in her fourth season as a starter, Ringwalt is undoubtedly one of the leaders of the team. Last year, she earned second team All-Ohio accolades.

A catcher since her freshman season, Ringwalt is making the transition to shortstop.

Also back are senior outfielders Ashley Stewart and Megan Muhleman; junior outfielders Summer Jacobs and Megan Esselburn; sophomores Allison Cramer, Kylie Grier, Cassidy Whiteus, Abby King, Katie Lahna and Jade Poorman; and freshmen Haley Mosholder and Jayden Hagans.

Both Whiteus and King are vying for playing time behind the plate as well as outfield positions. Also battling for playing time in the outfield are Cramer and Poorman.

Providing a one-two pitching punch are Grier and Mosholder. Only Grier saw some limited varsity action a year ago. When not pitching, each will fill infield positions along with Lahna and Hagans.

“The thing that excites me most about the season is starting with such a young group of girls and getting to see how they improve as the season progresses,” Lindsey said. “The longer they play together, the more they will mesh and get comfortable with each other.

Among four graduates were All-Ohio pitcher Taylor Spang who is now playing at Tiffin University. Also lost were Kylie Hawkins, Tyler Lahna and Laiken Lauvray.

Through April 9th, the Lady Bears have experienced some success, compiling a 4-1 record.

Their only loss was a season-opening 3-0 decision against Tri-Valley.

Victories include a 6-5 win over Danville, 3-2 over Philo, 4-2 over Coshocton and a 4-3 win over New Philadelphia in which Muhleman knocked in the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ringwalt has blasted a pair of home runs thus far while Lahna has one.

“Winning all of these close games with such a young team can only help their experience and confidence,” said Lindsey. “How they handled these pressure situations will prove to be valuable.”

Assistant coaches include Bonnie Infante and Mark Lindsey. Chad Carroll is the junior varsity coach.

WARSAW - Invitational victories, league title chases and state meet qualifying are all synonymous with the River View High School boys’ track and field program and nothing less is expected during the 2014 season.

“Our team outlook this year is that we should once again compete for the league, district, and regional titles as long as our team continues to work toward their goals,” said head coach Mike Gray, now in his ninth season.”

And there are goals on top of goals.

“The team’s goals are to have fun, break records, win the first meet, go undefeated at home, win ECOL, win district, win regionals, qualify as many to state as possible and once there finish in the top eight for each event,” Gray said.

He can chalk up at least one of those goals already as his squad finished first in an abbreviated version of the Black Bear relays at the start of the season. River View scored 28 points to defeat Lakewood (25), Mount Vernon (14) and Licking Valley (8). Due to inclimate weather, only eight events were conducted.

The Black Bears have finished in the top three in the East Central Ohio League the past nine years including four championships. Last year, the Gold and Black was the top team in both the small and large school divisions of the ECOL. “This year’s team has big shoes to fill with all the success we had last year,” said Gray, whose team accomplished league and district championships, placed third in the regional, and qualified for five different events at the state meet.

Key returners are senior state qualifiers Brandon Adams, Andy Parsons and Trevis Stamper.

Adams will again compete in the 100, 200, and 400-meter dash; Parsons in the 200, 400, and 800-meter run; and Stamper in the 200, 400, and hurdle events.

Also returning are seniors Trevon Hannah (sprints/throws), Corey Miller (distance), Tyler Stein (throws), Damjan Zec (jumps/sprints), Gustavo Costa (sprints/jumps) and Jon Roth (sprints).

Juniors who will are expected to have a positive impact are Doug Boals (sprints) Jakob Eick (distance), Drew Everhart (distance), Steven Scheetz (distance), Chris St Clair (middle distance), Marcus Watson (sprints/ jumps), Keith Burchfield (jumps/sprints), and Levi Vandenbark (sprints).

Among the sophomore class, Gray has high expectations for Nick Fitzgerald (throws), Harley Mathias (sprints/pole vault), and Tyler Pinckard (sprints/ jumps).

Newcomers include juniors Brendan Dickson and Connor Hill, sophomores Alan Mitchell, Caleb Pendola and Tyler Wright and freshmen Ethan Fry, Michael Hardesty, Lucas Lauvray, Spencer Mankin, Brett Shalosky, Jerimiah Starcher, Garrett Stollings and Colt Stottlemire.

Key losses for the Bears are Brice Finton who was all league and all district in the sprints and jumps, Garrett Gee who was a state qualifier in the 4 x 400-meter relay, Clay Holsclaw who was all league and all district in the throws.

Also lost through graduation were Max Thomsen (sprints), Craig Murray (sprints), and Nate Davis (sprints/jumps, and Marsel List (sprints).

For his accomplishments, Gray has been Eastern District Coach of the Year two times in Division I and two times in Division II and ECOL coach of the year four times.

Assistant coaches include Joe Douglass, Cyrus Granger and James Heath.

Lady Bears track & field team solid despite small squad

WARSAW - What the River View High School girls’ track and field team lacks in numbers should be made for by its resolve.

“We have a very small girls’ team this year but with some really good athletes,” said head coach Vince Andrews. “We have a very well-rounded team.”

The Lady Bears are also youthful, which bodes well for the future as there are only two seniors on the squad with veteran Lindsay Lupher highlighting the field.

“Lindsay is our lone senior letter winner from last year and will lead our shot put and discus corps,” Andrews said.

The other senior is newcomer Erika Massie, who will help solidify the sprint events.

Also returning is sophomore Kristen Douglass, who was a 2013 state qualifier in the hurdles.

Juniors who are back for another go-around are Kassidy Brillhart (hurdles/sprints), Torie Neal (sprints), Kamryn Douglass (sprints/long jump) and Fawn Denbow (pole vault/high jump/long jump). Newcomer Sofie Hjorth will add depth to the sprint events.

Andrews looks at Denbow as the leader of that group as she comes off a successful sophomore campaign.

In addition to Kristen Douglass, also a sprinter, a deep and talented sophomore class includes CC Brown (high jump), Amy Johnson (shot put/ discus), Breanna Johnson (shot put/discus), Kayla Metz (sprints), Bella Pendola (distance), Julia Royer (distance) and Brittany Schaefer (sprints/ pole vault).

New participants from the 10th grade are Emily Barnett (shot put/ discus), Samantha Douglass (sprints/high jump), Whitney Fender (sprints/ high jump), Jen Hough (shot put/discus), K.J. Smailes (sprints/pole vault) and Grace Wherley (sprints/long jump).

“The majority of our scoring last year came from our strong freshman class,” Andrews said. “Along with (Kristen) Douglass, Pendola will again be a leader on our distance team.”

Adding depth will be freshmen Sarah Eick (distance), Sierra Hutchison (shot put/discus), Taylor Massie (distance), Molly Schlupp (sprints/pole vault) and Shawna Shroyer (sprints/pole vault).

Andrews is being assisted by Joe Douglass, Cyrus Granger and James Heath.

WEST LAFAYETTE - Although he is only in his second year as head coach of the Ridgewood High School baseball team, Chad Lahna continues to adhere to the goals that have been established before him.

“We want to be playing our best baseball when the tournament approaches,” said Lahna. “We look to go out and compete on a daily basis and improve in all facets throughout the season” That philosophy certainly worked well in 2013 as the Generals compiled a 20-10 record and advanced all the way to the Division III regional final before falling to eventual state champion Wheelersburg by a 4-0 score.

The goals remain the same as seven lettermen return to lead the Generals.

“We are a very young team who hopes to carry over last season’s success into a productive 2014 season,” said Lahna. “Being a young team we are going to make mistakes. It’s how we handle those mistakes and overcome them that will tell us what type of team we will be.”

Leading the 2014 version of Generals are seniors Ryan Lowe and Tevis Whitt.

Lowe returns as the team’s starting catcher and has already signed a letter-of-intent to play at Ashland University. He will also pitch and play first base. He is the top returning hitter having batted .374 a year ago.

Although he did not play baseball last year, Whitt will make an impact by manning one of the outfield positions.

Additionally, seven juniors are on the roster, including Gage Young at third base, Dillan Shepler at first base, pitcher and catcher, Seth Walters at first base and pitcher and Alex Croston at second base.

Logan Slusser, Jon Barker and Kelly Barthalow will all play outfield positions.

Shepler was a second-team All-East District selection for River View in 2013. Barker is also a transfer from River View.

Sophomores Austin Lowery will pitch and play outfield and Brice Hammond at shortstop round out the roster.

“I think once we get used to playing with each other and get more comfortable, we can only get better,” Lahna said. “Each day they come to the park determined and hungry to get better and our job as coaches is to get them to the point where they are best prepared Gone through graduation are Zak Keesee, C.J. Grove, Dillon McPherson and Kody Hains, all whom are now competing at the collegiate level.

“We lost four quality seniors, but we still have some guys back who got a lot of time last year,” said Lahna. “These guys know what this program is all about and understand what it takes to win at a high level.”

Assisting Lahna are Travis Simmons, Troy Dolick, Dusty Shroyer, Ryan Gress and Tyler McCullough.

“We hope to be competitive in our league and understand there are no ‘gimmies’,” said Lahna. “Each team in our league is a quality team capable of beating one another and we as coaches aren’t easy on them but they are coachable, hard-working and knowledgeable young men who look to better themselves each day.”

WEST LAFAYETTE - Throughout his 16 years of coaching softball at Ridgewood High School, Kirby Shivers has seen his share of ups and downs and coming off a season of struggles, he hopes the 2014 Lady Generals are surging upward.

Led by Emily McCoy, a senior and fourth-year starter Shivers hopes the team is turning the corner after a 9-18 record and second-round loss in the sectional tournament.

“I have a real good feeling about this team,” said Shivers. “We have a nice core of returning lettermen and a good mix of young talent. We are looking to improve our pitching and defense and hitting,” While McCoy anchors the team from behind the plate, fellow seniors Erica Olinger, Jordan Cognion and Lindsey Gould will also provide leadership.

An outfielder, Olinger is the leading returning hitter, having batted .313 last year. Cognion returns for her third season at first base and Gould, another third year player, will play right field.

Juniors include outfielder Brianna Grace, pitcher/infielder/outfielder Erika Michael while sophomores are middle infielder/pitcher Jaedyn Wentz, catcher/outfielder/third baseman Kayla Sharier; and infielder Paige Patterson.

Grace was second on the team in batting average at .246 and Michael compiled an 8-9 pitching record in 2013.

Fulfilling roles vacated by five graduates will be sophomore infielder Morgan McDorman, sophomore first baseman/pitcher Samantha Wilson, freshman outfielder/infielder Autumn Brown and outfielder/first baseman Kelcie Mattison.

Graduates include Taylor Zinkon, Amy Foreman, Jasmine Pelfrey and Abbey Youngen.

“We’re always shooting for the top four but the league will be tough from top to bottom,” Shivers said. “I’m excited and I’ve got a good gut feeling about this group.”

Shivers attained a personal milestone early in the campaign, earning his 200th career victory in a doubleheader sweep over Morgan on April 5th. The Lady Generals won the first game 13-1 and edged out the Lady Raiders 7-6.

Shivers is now 200-182 throughout his tenure.

Assisting Shivers are Tina Parameter, Sally Sharier, Brenda McCoy and Toya Moore.

Fire hydrants to be tested

Residents in the area that is being tested may experience some discoloration in their water. If this happens, just let your water run for a few minutes and it should clear up.

RING THE BELLS Local church hand bell choirs participated in the 13th annual

Ring the Bells for Habitat event on Sunday, April 13 at the Presbyterian Church.

Over the last 13 years, the event has raised more than $9,500 for the local Habitat.

Each hand bell choir performed separate pieces and then came together as one for the grand finale as they performed, “All Night, All Day” directed by Rolanda Hunt. Brittleigh Smith, executive director of Habitat, expressed her thanks to all who participated. “Thank you to everyone who came out on this nice spring day to support Habitat,” she said. Ridgewood girls’ track & field team hopes to continue development

WEST LAFAYETTE - If strength comes in numbers, the Ridgewood High School girls’ track and field team should be able to exert some considerable force in the 2014 season.

A total of 39 ladies have donned the Orange and Black uniform, which gives veteran head coach Darrell Ball reason to be optimistic.

“Our strength will be our large numbers,” Ball acknowledged. “We hope to complement our first place finishers with additional depth coming from such a deep roster.”

Returning to help improve upon a sixth-place finish in the Inter-Valley Conference are senior lettermen Jessika McCoun and Joanna Eberwine; juniors Hollie Schwab, Cora Thompson, Alexis Perkins, Bryse Gilmore and Kaden Conkle.

McCoun excels in relays as well as the 400-meter dash and 800 run while Eberwine will compete in the shot put and discus. Also, Schwab’s strengths are in the hurdles and relays, Thompson and Perkins in the hurdles, Gilmore in the throws and Conkle in the pole vault.

Also back are sophomores Holly McCoy (high jump), Kelsea Gallagher (sprints), Veronica Roberts (sprints) and Kristin Milligan (distance).

Also competing for the Lady Generals will be seniors Destiny Caudy, Amanda Matchett and Megan Wartenbee and juniors Kyra Gephart, Joy McCune, and Marissa Whitt.

Sophomores are Makayla Blackstone (long jump), Roni Roberts (middle distances), Allison Dobson, Cassandra Dolick, Kelsea Gallagher, Britany Lusk, Kristin Milligan, Morgan Moody and Ashley Wheeler.

Making a large group of freshmen are Riley Buchanan, Megan Cox, Megan Durbin, Katelyn Gallagher, Kayla Goodwill, Emily Kobel, Katie Leitz, Josey Lillibridge, Rachele Perkins, Abby Powers, Colleen Schwartz, Mallory Simmons, Tayler Shivers, Alexis Slusser, Peyton Slusser and Lexy White.

Ball said the biggest challenge he faces is keeping the underclassmen aware of their potential, some of which was unveiled in the season-opening meet.

The Lady Generals competed in the annual J.D. Milburn Relays held at Lee Stadium in Newcomerstown on March 29, finishing fifth in the seven-team field with 49 points.

“We hope to improve as the season progresses and finish strong in the IVC and districts,” said Ball. “It is our goal to improve on last year’s sixth-place finish. I am excited about the way the team has continued to develop.”

The United Kennel Club Inc., the Coshocton County Beagle Club and Nestlé Purina, worked together to host the Hunting Beagle Nationals April 11-13 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. The event brought in people from around Ohio and other states. Jason Collins and his Beagle Dan came in for the event from Navarre. “I like going to these events because you get to see old buddies you haven’t seen in a while and meet new people,” he said. COSHOCTON - Do you have a concrete plan in place to transition your family farm to the next generation? OSU Extension will offer a Farm Transition, Estate and Retirement Seminar on Friday, April 25 in Coshocton.

This event is for all generations involved with the family farm.

The purpose of the program is to offer tools and education to farm owners who are preparing to transition the farm to the next generation.

Topics include trusts, gifting, protecting farm and personal assets, federal estate taxes, insurance options, retirement income and security, conservation easements, family communication and much more.

COSHOCTON - Angie Pyle has joined the Raymond James team as its marketing manager/operations associate.

Pyle is a graduate of Otterbein University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She previously worked as the manager of The Warehouse Steak N Stein and Oscar Rose restaurants.

Pyle will be responsible for operations at the branch and can assist clients in determining the current value of their accounts, print account statements or tax forms, and assisting Operations Manager Linda Roahrig and Branch PYLE Manager Shane Pyle run the branch in an efficient manner. Angie will also be in charge of all marketing operations for the Coshocton branch.

Benefits Memorial Golf Tournament: The seventh annual Leanne Marie Hittle Memorial Golf Tournament will be Saturday, May 10 at Hickory Flat Greens Golf Course.

Entry fee is $30 per member with cart and $40 per member without cart. For non-members of Hickory Flat, cost is $50. The top three places will be awarded cash prizes. A hole in one wins a new car. Rent-A-Wrestler: Ridgewood’s annual Rent-A-Wrestler Spring Clean-Up Day will be Saturday, April 19.

Area residents can rent a wrestler for up to two hours to do odd jobs, clean up, help residents with loading, hauling, yard work, painting, lifting, and organizing.

Basketball Camp: Coshocton Ladies Redskins Basketball Camp will be Friday, May 16 from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 17 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and Sunday, May 18 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Camp is for any girl entering fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh grade for the 2014 - 2015 school year. Eisenhower: In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the World War II Normandy Landings, our National Library Week program will feature the ever-popular Ken Hammontree. Owner of Living History Productions, Ken is well known for his historical impersonations. Although Ken has portrayed many characters over the years, one of his favorite personalities is Dwight David Eisenhower, U.S. General, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, and 34th President. It is a school-based program that aims to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors.

The program is based on both the social influence and competence enhancement models of prevention.

Consistent with the theoretical framework, LST addresses multiple risk and protective factors and teaches personal and social skills that

COSHOCTON - Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices (CBHC) is proud to take the lead, collaborating with all three county local school districts, including Coshocton City, Ridgewood and River View districts; the Coshocton County Prosecutor, the Coshocton County Sheriff, our Family and Children First Coordinator and others who are joining forces to combat substance use and abuse in our county through the “Start Talking! Building a Drug-Free Future” Youth Resilience Prevention grant.

Coshocton County Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc., dba Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices (CBHC) is certified by the ODMHAS in Outpatient Treatment and Prevention (#1055). CBHC has served the county for more than 40 years, providing treatment and prevention throughout the county. Over the past decade, funding has been cut to the point where it is ultimately impossible to offer the prevention services that are necessary to make a difference in student’s lives, but this grant will help change that for the 201415 school year.

Due to student-reported responses gathered in the 2013 CAYCI survey, the coalition feels it is important to note that a strong substance abuse education curriculum must be offered to these students in order to change their world views with respect to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Various school-based program effectiveness ratings have been viewed and it was discovered that LifeSkills Training (LST), would be a very good choice to incorporate into the classrooms of the local rural culture.

This grant funding will allow the coalition to reach each school district, providing LST with fidelity, as well as outcome determinations. One hundred forty-four individual class sessions will

This change affects those who are looking for entry-level work, younger workers and lower income Americans. The non partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) confirmed that the “Save American Workers Act “would result in $63 billion in lower taxes and $75 billion in higher cash wages.

With three out of four Americans living paycheck to paycheck, the financial squeeze on middle-class families is making life harder.

Small businesses are unable to give hardworking Americans a secure, well paying job because of the new regulations brought on by Obamacare and other initiatives by the Administration.

According to a survey of small business executives by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 71 percent of small businesses say the health care law makes it harder for them to hire employees.

On April 4, we received the monthly jobs report which only emphasized the importance of the 40-hour work week. Lance Roberts of STA Wealth Management told Fox News that adding jobs to the economy is important but we need to focus more on creating “quality jobs.”

Small businesses are the backbone of our nation’s economy and the further piling up of regulations continues to hold them down. Obamacare was only the beginning of those regulations, now the President would like to drop the 40-hour work week down to a 30-hour work week. Each new rule the Administration pushes out has an effect on the 7th district of Ohio and around the country in a negative way.

Families and individuals continue to look for jobs that will keep them employed and pay them enough to support themselves along with their families. Now, the Administration wants to continue to place the strain on Americans and small business owners by redefining the 40-hour work week. According to a Hoover Institution Study, 2.6 million Americans are at risk of having their hours and wages cut as a result of the 30 hour Obamacare rule. My colleagues and I in the House have proposed H.R. 2575, the “Save American Workers Act.” Rather than lose more jobs and have less take home pay, my colleagues and I want to help protect middle class workers from the destructive consequences of the President’s law.

The profile of a family that will feel the effects of this cut to 30-hours a week has a median income of $29,126 and works in retail, manufacturing or education. This rule will force employers who have previously provided coverage to

Rotary Club names student of the month Student of the month WEST LAFAYETTE – Amanda Lowery, daughter of Holly Lowery and Greg Fuller, was named the Rotary student of the month for March 2014.

Amanda is a Ridgewood junior who is a three year member of both the volleyball and basketball teams. She received IVC honors for both sports this past year. She also is an active member of Ridgewood FFA, serves as vice president of student council and is the 2014-2015 junior class vice president. Amanda also is involved in the adopt-a-highway program.

That is exactly what Amy Stockdale, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, works hard to show businesses.

“Since this time last year we’ve added 35 new chamber members,” she said. “Our membership is continuing to grow and a lot of the new members are coming from neighboring counties which shows the value of working together to market businesses. We are out there selling the community daily and sending out relocation packages.”

Stockdale will be able to do more for chamber members thanks to a generous donation from RockTenn.

“Because of a donation from them our fundraising efforts from the chamber auction ended up totaling $16,615, which was well over our $15,000 goal.”

The evening of celebration ended with a few brief remarks from Jesse Fischer, president of the chamber’s executive committee.

“There are so many people that help make tonight possible,” he said.

“Thank you to everybody here. Without all of you, none of this would be possible.”
